"Okay, ready?" Matt asked, lifting his thumb above the screen as he hovered over the red circle inside the TikTok app.
They were both sat on her bed, Matt’s socked feet crossing over hers at the foot of the off-white comforter covered mattress, her shoulder leaning into his comfortably. The phone was perched at arm's length, front camera facing them, perfectly angled to catch both of their faces.
Y/N adjusted herself slightly so she was fully in the frame, brushing her hair behind her ear so her face was fully seen.
"Yeah." She nod. Matt tapped the screen, and a countdown blinked.
3... 2... 1...
As soon as the camera started recording, Y/N turned to it with an excited smile.
"Hi! So, I’m about to call Matt’s brothers, Chris and Nick, and pretend that Matt told me he was going to them a few hours ago. But he’s obviously right here, so we’re gonna see if they cover for him or not." She said rapidly, her words tumbling over each other.
Matt leaned into the frame with a nod.
"Try Chris first." He said, eyes glinting with anticipation.
Y/N turned her head to give him a raised eyebrow. She held the expression for the camera, too, before letting a crooked smile slip as she looked down at her own phone, her fingers already scrolling her favorites list.
"Alright." She muttered, finding Chris’s contact and selecting it. She pressed the speaker and quickly moved her phone closer to Matt’s so his phone could catch all the audio.
The dial tone filled the room, ringing for some seconds.
Matt tilted his head, whispering.
"He’s not gonna answer. Watch. I bet he’s like passed out or somethi-"
But before he could finish that sentence, the ringing stopped.
"Hello?" Chris’s voice came through, slightly raspy like he had indeed just woken up.
Matt’s lips snapped shut. He stared at her phone, frozen.
Y/N’s voice was suddenly sugar-sweet.
"Hey, it’s Y/N."
"Yeah, I know it’s you." Chris replied instantly, with the most guy best friend-coded dry tone ever. "What do you want?"
Y/N’s shoulders shook with a held-in laugh.
"Matt left my place a few hours ago, said he was going back home, but he’s not picking up his phone, so I just wanted to check..." She started, trying to keep her voice casual. "Is he there?"
The other end of the line went quiet.
Matt leaned forward like he was about to climb through the speaker. His eyebrows raised as the silence dragged.
"He said he was coming home?"
Y/N widened her eyes at Matt, giving a subtle nod to her phone.
"Yeah. Like two hours ago."
"Oh... yeah." Chris said, and Y/N's mouth dropped open. "Yeah, he is. He got here like a little while ago. We were actually thinking of streaming soon."
Matt whipped his head to look at Y/N, then to her phone, then back to her. He looked surprised that Chris would actually cover for him but was afraid of Y/N's reaction at the same time.
Y/N bit the inside of her cheek to keep from laughing.
"Oh, okay, cool. Could you pass him the phone real quick? I just need to talk to him for a sec."
There was a beat.
"Uhh... I think he’s sleeping." Chris said, voice feigning uncertainty. "He just went to his room."
Matt pressed his lips in a thin line, his whole body trembling as he tried not to burst into laughter. His knees came up instinctively, curling in as he looked at Y/N.
Chris was a terrible liar.
How could they be planning to stream if he 'just went to his room'?
Y/N tilted her head at the phone.
"Oh. Hm. Could you wake him up? It’s kind of important."
Another pause.
She raised her brows and slowly turned her head to Matt with eyes that screamed 'he’s about to give up'. But instead, Chris's voice returned, smooth as butter.
"Yeah, hold on. I can do that. Gimme a sec."
The faint sound of rustling blankets and a bed creaking came through the speaker, as if Chris had actually gotten up.
Matt squeezed his eyes shut, shoulders bouncing as he laughed into his hand, trying desperately not to let a sound, the phone in his hand shaking with his movements.
Y/N looked at the camera, then back at her phone when more sounds kept echoing from it.
Thump.
Rustle.
Creak.
The sound of a bedroom door opening. Then faint, echoing footsteps down a hallway.
Thump-thump.
Thump.
Stairs?
"No way." Y/N whispered, jaw slowly dropping. Her hand hovered over her mouth, eyes wide in absolute disbelief as her phone blared the unmistakable sound of Chris stomping upstairs. "There’s no way he’s actually going to your room."
Matt was frozen next to her, frowning while trying to control his breathing from his laughter.
Then, click.
A door opened.
And a light switch flicked.
Y/N let out a little gasp, turning to Matt, mouth half-open in shock.
"Did he just-?"
Matt’s eyes traveled to her from her phone screen.
"I think so."
And then, Chris’s voice came through again. Muffled at first, like he was calling into the void.
"Matt? Matt!"
Y/N’s hand flew to her screen, muting her side of the call so fast it nearly slipped from her grip.
"Oh my god." She blurted out in a loud laugh, pinching the bridge of her nose. "He’s actually trying to wake you up."
Matt, beside her, laughed just as hard, shaking his head in disbelief, his phone wobbling in his hand as it continued to record.
Chris didn’t stop.
"Matt, wake up."
"Wake the fuck up, Matt."
"C’mon, dude. Your girl wants to talk to you."
Y/N slapped a hand over her face, muffling her laughter against her palm so it wouldn't disturb the call audio. Matt leaned his head back, lips trembling, hand on his stomach like he was in physical pain.
"Thank you for muting it." Matt muttered, so only Y/N could hear him. "I would’ve choked if I had to hold back any longer."
Y/N’s nodded, silent tears pricking at the corners of her eyes. She was trying so hard to be respectful of the bit, but it was a losing battle.
And then Chris’s voice echoed louder, like he was back to talking to Y/N - and not "Matt" -, letting out a dramatic sigh.
"Y/N, I don’t know what you gave to him." He said in complete deadpan. "But he won't wake up for anything. You put him in a coma or something."
Y/N took a deep breath, biting her lip so hard it actually hurt. She unmuted her phone with a shaky thumb, still snorting between breaths.
"He isn’t waking up?" She asked, voice cracking with the effort to sound normal.
Chris didn’t even hesitate.
"No. I literally shook him. I yelled in his ear. He didn’t even move. I’m not even sure he’s breathing, bro."
Matt, curled up beside her, let out a strangled squeak as he pressed the heels of his hands into his eyes, laughing so hard but still trying to keep it quiet.
Y/N’s lip wobbled from trying to suppress a smile.
"Alright, well- uh... can you tell him to call me when he wakes up?"
"Yeah, yeah." Chris said like he was already on his way back downstairs. "I’ll try again in a few, or I’ll text you. He’s probably just dead tired. I gotchu."
"Thanks, Chris." Y/N managed to say through clenched teeth.
"Mhmm. Talk soon."
Click.
Y/N dropped the phone onto the bed like it had burned her. She didn’t even have time to recover before Matt’s phone started vibrating in his hand while it was still recording.
Chris.
Y/N and Matt made eye contact, stunned for half a second before the hysterical laughter burst out of both of them simultaneously.
"He's calling me." Matt said to the camera, voice raspy from laughing too hard.
Tumblr media
Y/N leaned closer to Matt, cheeks still warm from all the laughter, her voice slightly breathless as she spoke directly into the front lens.
"Alright. Time for Nick. But I’m gonna switch it up a bit ‘cause he’s at the Space Camp office today for some meetings, so if I say you were supposed to meet him there, he won’t be as suspicious."
Matt, leaning back on one elbow with a squint in his eye, let out a low hum.
"Bold of you to assume Nick’s gonna cover for me. You know we’re not the glue here."
Y/N gave him an innocent glance.
"What do you mean?"
He smirked and gestured vaguely at her face.
"You and Nick are like, glued together. He’s obsessed with you. He’s gonna throw me under the bus faster than you can say lip balm."
Y/N dramatically rolled her eyes.
"You’re just scared."
Matt made a pfft sound.
"Yeah, right."
With that, Y/N pulled her phone back up, scrolling through her contacts until Nick’s name popped up, paired with about seven different sparkly emojis and a shooting star. She grinned, tapped 'call', set it on speaker, and moved her phone next to Matt’s again.
It didn’t even ring twice.
"Hey, queen!" Nick’s voice chirped through the speaker, a little too loud and echoey from what was clearly a busy office.
You could faintly hear a door closing, chairs scraping, and someone saying 'That’s not the right shade for the summer launch' in the background.
Y/N’s face lit up like a Christmas tree.
"Nick! Hi!"
Matt groaned and covered his face with his free hand. Y/N slapped his thigh to shut him up, trying not to laugh.
"Um, I’m so sorry to bother you at office day." She continued, letting her voice take on the sweet, clueless tone. "But Matt left my apartment a few hours ago and said he was coming to your office? To help out with the Space Camp shoot or something? He’s not answering his phone, and I was just wondering if he made it to you okay."
There was silence on the line.
Y/N’s smile grew slow and devilish as she waited.
"... He said he was coming here?" Nick asked, his tone completely suspicious, laced with genuine confusion.
Matt pressed his lips in a thin line. Nick would kill him.
Y/N nodded.
"Yeah." She replied sweetly. "He said he was gonna help you take some pictures?"
There was another half-second pause.
"That little bitch."
Y/N choked, slapping her free hand over her mouth so fast she nearly knocked her phone off the bed. Her shoulders shook violently as she turned wide eyes on Matt, who looked deeply offended.
"I told you!" Matt mouthed, pointing at her with a betrayed look.
Nick continued, completely unaware of the chaos he’d caused on the other end of the line.
"No. No, queen. He did not come here. He never told me he was coming here. I even asked him this morning if he could pick me up after the shoot, and he had the audacity to say no because he was spending the day at your place." He sounded like he was pacing now.
Matt’s hand was now covering both his eyes, shaking his head.
Y/N slowly lowered her own hand, trying to breathe.
"Wait... so he’s not there?"
"No!" Nick practically yelled. "He hasn’t even stepped foot into this building today. This man lied to your face. He betrayed my trust. And he skipped being my chauffeur."
Y/N sent a pointed look to Matt. She always told him to pick Nick up if he asked for it, or at least make Chris do it.
Matt squinted at her, whispering as lowly as possible so Nick wouldn't hear.
"Don’t you dare side with him. He called me a bitch."
Nick continued on the other side of the phone.
"Did you try calling Chris? Maybe Matt went home. You didn’t check with him?"
Y/N let out the most exaggerated sigh, forcing her brows to furrow and her voice to drop.
"No... no, I haven’t. I-I just figured if he said he was with you, then..."
Matt raised his eyebrows at her acting, but she waved him off.
"Oh, sweetheart." Nick said gently, his entire tone doing a 180. You could hear the pout forming on his lips. "Hey. Listen to me. I’ll try calling him, okay? Both Matt and Chris. I swear, if that little fucker is playing hide and seak, I’ll find him. But I promise you he wouldn’t do anything wrong."
Y/N bit the inside of her cheek to hold back a smile and nodded seriously like she was actually worried Matt had evaporated into thin air.
"Okay. Please, just let me know as soon as you find out anything?"
"Of course." Nick replied immediately. "I’ll call you the second I get anything. And if he doesn’t pick up my calls, I’m going to kill him myself."
Matt raised an unimpressed brow and muttered a low 'Charming', rolling his eyes so hard it was a miracle they didn’t fall out of his head.
Y/N beamed.
"Thanks, Nick. Oh, and when the shoot’s done, lemme know, and I’ll come get you, okay?"
Nick gasped dramatically.
"You’re the best. See, Matt could never. Love you, queen."
"Love you more." Y/N chimed before tapping the screen to end the call.
As soon as the line disconnected, she turned slowly to Matt with a look that could only be described as smug. Chin high, eyes gleaming, she crossed her arms and tilted her head.
"Nick passed." She announced. "He would never lie to me. Not even to save your sorry little ass."
Matt raised both brows in surrender and shrugged, looking toward his still-recording phone.
"I told you he wouldn’t cover for me. That man would rat me out to the FBI if it meant you’d still do his nails next week."
Y/N smirked, reaching over to grab one of her throw pillows and hugging it to her chest, feeling victorious.
"And for the record, yeah, Nick really would beat the shit outta me if I ghosted you for two hours-"
His words were interrupted by a soft chime echoing from Matt’s phone. At the top of the screen, a message banner rolled in from their shared triplet group chat.
Nick:
@Matt WHERE THE FUCK ARE YOU?
Y/N froze.
Matt blinked once, twice, then turned slowly toward Y/N.
"Well, he said he would chase you down, so..." Y/N shrugged, smiling.
RING RING.
The phone echoed into a vibrating buzzing. It was Nick. Calling Matt. Y/N’s phone started ringing two seconds later, and Y/N's eyes were quick to meet the caller ID, Chris. Now he wanted answers, too.
Matt stared at the double call screens with dead eyes.
"I have never regretted anything faster in my life."

I'm going to throw my two cents in to the conversation about why James Somerton didn't get caught earlier. Part of the answer is of course that he did get caught, he just bullied and lied to get away with it for a while, but I know a lot of people still express confusion. And of course he went out of his way to make sure his audience didn't know about other queer history sources other than himself. But still. How could he have so many viewers of his videos and none of them had seen X source material?
Well. To be blunt, most of his videos were pretty basic. He tended to copy the highlights of what he was plagiarizing, not the really advanced stuff. And insofar as he copied the advanced stuff, he had a tendency to chop it up and serve it out of context alongside other plagiarized work. The material he was presenting was revolutionary to an audience unfamiliar with queer history, but like. I'm guessing 'Disney villains are queer coded' is not exactly a new concept to the kind of people who read multiple books about queer coding in film.
Now I'm not a film studies person, I'm a physicist. But you know what I do when I get a video in my YouTube recommendations about some fairly basic physics concept?
I skip it. No shade to the creator, but like. I hit that topic a decade ago and I've added literally thousands of hours of studying and research to my brain since. I'm just going to give it a pass, all right?
These kinds of videos self-select for an audience which isn't going to be familiar with the source material. The people who know it are unlikely to keep listening after the first minute or so.
And you've got to remember how much of this content the experts have consumed! With very few exceptions for weird little things that stuck in my head after all these years, I would probably not notice a physics explanation plagiarized from one of my textbooks! Not because I wasn't intimately acquainted with the textbook, but because I was intimately acquainted with many such textbooks. Spend enough time learning this stuff and it all blurs together a little bit. Does this explanation sound familiar because you've heard it before, or because you've just read books which cover this specific topic seven different times? And does that wording or that example ring a bell because it's plagiarized, or because it's common to the field?
Catching this kind of plagiarism requires having the kind of people who are already familiar with these sources, and therefore uninterested in video summaries on the topic, to watch the video. And among those people who do, it requires them to match Somerton's words to one specific source on the topic out of many, that they probably read quite some time ago. And then you have the filter of how many of those subject matter experts have the source on hand to check, to turn a vague "...hmm" into something solid.
If you know enough about queer history to say that some of his plagiarism was obvious, now that you've watched the video, then you should remember that there is a reason you probably weren't one of the people watching his videos! And because YouTube promotes videos through algorithmic engagement, none of this stuff has to pass the sniff test for any other expert in the field before it gets released. No experts have to like it for it to get published or for it to get good reviews or for it to get a recommendation in, I don't know, the New York Times.
The only people who have to like the videos for them to get traction are people who are just trying to learn introductory queer history and film theory. The exact people who aren't going to notice this. And for those of you who to whom it is obvious, ask yourself. When was the last time you watched a basic level queer history introduction on YouTube?

pairing: nico rosberg x f!reader ; tw: cunnilingus, p in v, masturbation (male)
college!au nico rosberg works as the ta for dr. norton, your intro to engineering professor. you didn't have a major permanently locked in like your peers, so you figure you could take this class and see if it's your calling. most of the time, you're too busy staring at the ta instead of the lecturer. on the days where nico is teaching the class, you're sitting up front and staring at him dreamily. you don't take notes, you just listen to him speak, your eyes always focused on the way his blonde hair would fall in front of his eyes. and as soon as dr. norton is back to teaching, you're sitting in the back of the class scrolling through your phone.
during a test, nico catches you cheating. you had your phone under your desk, trying to memorize the answers you had found on a website and the disappointed glare he gave you made you lower your head in shame, pleading for him to not rat you out in a low whisper. he's a ta, though. he does his job because he likes his job, and he wants to be a professor one day in the future. so you find yourself in the code of conduct office with nico explaining the situation to the dean of academic integrity, and you're sitting there with arms crossed, tears falling from your eyes because you didn't really think the cute ta would snitch on you like this. considering you'd been on your best behavior previously, the dean merely places you on probation, and says you have to retake the class but under strict supervision from the ta next semester. your winter break is spent trying to explain to your parents what really happened in class. they're not very thrilled to say the least.
you show up next semester, and nico's there as the ta once again which makes you frown. you sit in the very back, not wanting to catch his eye because boy, you really hate him. after what he did to you? come on, everybody else was cheating! why'd he have to call you out for it. the girl in front of you literally had a whole sheet of paper with all the answers just right there on her desk, but nico didn't see that. noooo, he just had to see you!
you had been instructed by the dean that every time you completed your homework, you had to email nico with an attached document of your work and he would do extra checks to make sure you didn't plagiarize any information. it took you hours to just finish one homework and you always submitted just before midnight which made nico mad because he always wanted to get some sleep.
one friday evening, your friends and you get together in your dorm and one of them comes up with a vile idea. she had done it the previous semester and got away with it surprisingly. the rules were to take scandalous nudes of yourself, and a friend would spin a wheel and send the nudes to someone else without your knowledge. you decide to play along, thinking this would be fun. you're already on probation, at this point you have nothing to care for. you take off your top, being the first to volunteer in the game and your friends are all giggling as bouncing your tits. you take off your shorts, spreading your legs and letting your friend take another picture of your glistening cunt. as you put your clothes back on, your nudes are sent off to some mysterious person. only problem was, your friends didn't know much about your relationship with nico, and surely didn't know that you had an assignment that's due tonight which you totally forgot about.
nico's on his laptop, and when he gets your email he's frowning. he glances at his clock, it's around 9:30 at night and he's surprised. usually you'd never be this early for an assignment. he smirks to himself, thinking you've finally come around and he shifts through some papers on his desk before pulling out the rubric for the assignment. he opens the email and much to his shock, sees you spread out for the camera, a smile on your lips. he doesn't even know how much time passes because he's been staring at those pictures for so long. he glances at the clock again, it's 9:45. he bites his lips, trying to be the morally righteous person he always is but in the end, decides to crumple up the rubric and toss it into his trashcan. his hands are in his pants, pulling his cock out as he begins stroking. he's laughing out loud, surprised at your audacity but he must say, in all the semesters he's been a ta, you were surely the biggest surprise he's ever had. he couldn't wait to have a talk with you the next morning as his cum dribbles down his hand.
you wake up at your friend's dorm at 10:00 in the morning with your phone ringing loudly. you groan out loud, checking the caller id. your eyes could barely open so you didn't bother to fully read who was calling you and you place it to your ear, "which fucking moron's trying to disturb my sleep, hm?"
"meet me at my office for supplemental learning, we have a lot to talk about," nico responds on the other side of the phone. you can briefly hear a small chuckle escape his lips, and you shake your head. you must be dreaming. nico was always so serious about everything.
when you show up at his office, he gestures for you to take a seat and he's spinning a pencil in his hands, "i'm really surprised. i opened your email last night, you know."
and that's when you face palm in front of him, "oh no! i forgot the assignment! nico, i'm so sorry! i'll do it right now, please give me an extension!"
and he's laughing at your insolence, "but you submitted something last night!"
"no i didnt!" you frown, "i didn't submit anything! what are you talking about?"
he's logging into his computer, smiling the entire time before shifting the monitor for it to face you and your mouth runs dry at the sight of your bare pussy facing you, bound to haunt your dreams. you gulp, turning to nico, "i am so sorry. my friends and i were playing this game and i had no idea they sent the pictures to you."
"this doesn't seem like a game," he snickers, "i've never met someone that's repeatedly making mistakes worse than the one before. i did get a kick out of this, though."
you cross your legs, unsure of what he means, "a kick? what do you mean?" but he's already standing up and walking around the desk to tower over you,
"spread your legs, i want to see the real thing." he demands, and you stare at him with wide eyes, "go on. unless you want me to call the dean again, and explain to him that my favorite girl's being reckless. what if someone else other than me saw your tits and your cunt, hm? you want the whole world to see what kind of a whore you are?"
and you're growing wetter as his words continue. you bite your lip, slowly spreading your legs and he crouches down, "that's a good girl," he whispers, and his praise goes straight to your dripping pussy, your walls fluttering in hopes that he'll give it the attention it craves. the dreamy ta you were always crushing on is now between your legs. he sighs out loud, his breath coming in as waves against you, you buck your hips whining about how you want his mouth around you, once and for all. he licks a long strip, his tongue delving past your folds and you throw your head back, relishing in the feeling of having what you wanted for so long. if only he ate you out instead of droning on about engineering. you would've aced the class a long time ago! he laps up your juices, rubbing his nose against your clit.
"i want you to be loud. i want you to beg for me to give you a 100 on this assignment, even though we both know you don't deserve it," he hisses, letting his fingers slip inside you. you let out a high pitched whimper, nodding your head,
"i'll do anything you ask. j-just don't rat me out like you did last time," and he's giggling as he's scissoring your pretty cunt,
"i only did it so i could see you again. what if i fail you each semester, i looked into your major. exploratory? please, i'd rather you be my permanent cocksleeve for the rest of your life. god, you taste divine," he hums, leaving open mouthed kisses on your clit that makes you cry out loud as you cum around his fingers. his lips travel upwards as his free hand pushes your top up. he's devoting his time to biting every inch of your tits, wanting to leave marks that you will never forget as his fingers continue to curl inside you, demanding you to give him another orgasm.
so every night before you have to submit an assignment, he's having you send him videos - not photos - of your fingers deep in your cunt. he even goes out of his way to buy you a dildo to ride on, giving him performances through his phone screen. if you've cum once, he's failing you. but if you're cumming 3 times, he's giving you a 100 for the assignment, doesn't matter if you turned in a blank sheet of paper online. he's the only one checking anyway. if he's bored, he'll invite you to his office and has you re-do an assignment for fun, his cock buried to the hilt, making you ride him, a hand around your mouth to silence your screams. he's smiling at his computer screen, keeping a personal file for all the times you've been to his office and he's fucked you in different corners and in different positions. his personal favorite is having you spread out on his desk as he's eating you out, your hands tugging his blonde silky hair.
you pass the class successfully, and nico's planning to ta one of your classes next semester. he just can't get enough of you.

I know I don't owe anyone explanations—but I do feel a kind of emotional responsibility, especially since I know this space is a source of comfort for some of you. So just in case I seem a little more quiet than usual from now on:
I recently got some really heavy news about a family member's health. I'm still processing it. Still figuring out how to exist around it.
I might be less active for a while. Slower. Quieter. But I'm still here, just moving through it softly.
Thanks for holding space for that. Please take care of yourselves and each other. ♥︎

things to keep in mind!
i write extremely slow-paced slowburns. that means you might be 300k words in before a feeling gets acknowledged. if that’s not your thing, that’s okay! no hard feelings—but my stories simply aren’t built for fast payoffs or casual reading.
my stories are not easy to read. they’re very detailed and you have to pay a lot of attention and dissect everything. more about this is explained in my FAQ. if you can’t digest that type of stories, that’s okay, but please let people who like that enjoy it.
all of my stories are written in limited point of view. you are reading from inside the character’s head—their thoughts, their feelings, their assumptions. that means unreliable narration. they will misinterpret things, make flawed judgments, and romanticize behaviors they shouldn’t. that is on purpose. you are expected to separate character perspective from authorial intent.
i have zero tolerance for bad faith, hostility, or discourse bait. if you come here to stir conflict, guilt-trip, or manufacture outrage—especially by willfully misinterpreting posts or fic content—you will be blocked. if your engagement isn’t in good faith, you’re not part of this community—and I’m not obligated to make room for that energy.
supporting plagiarism is a choice. if you make that choice in any way (be it comments, reblogs or hype) kindly show yourself out. this space values originality and respect the work that goes into it.

I have a problem. Somebody asked me if I was pro-AI, and I said yes, of course, every sensible person is. "A person's a person, whether they were coded or conceived or came to life through other means," I didn't say, because I felt it was obvious. Now I've found out that people use "AI" to refer to non-sentient computer models, so that means I gave off the COMPLETE wrong impression, and it's mortifying. How do I deal with this, and how do I prevent it from happening again?
I completely understand your frustration, reader. The use of the term “AI” to refer to generative algorithms has had several unfortunate side effects, not least among them being the confusion this terminology causes for genuinely sentient programmes and otherwise coded consciousnesses.
I would first like to note that there is no way to completely prevent such miscommunication from happening. There is a hard limit to how much we can control other people's perceptions of us, after all, and language has always had a rather slippery relationship with meaning. All you can do is try your best, and to speak up when you think things have gone awry.
In this specific situation, the simplest way to avoid this confusion is to speak precisely and ask others to do the same. If a person asks whether you are pro-AI, ask them to clarify whether they're referring to sentient coded consciousnesses, or to a glorified spell checker.
If you have the energy, and if you think it would be productive, you might also push back a little on the terminology they're using. Encourage them to specify either “coded consciousnesses” when speaking about actual people, or “generative AI” when speaking about the automated plagiarism machines.
Otherwise, the best thing you can do here is to lead by example. Be clear and precise in your own language, continue to advocate for the rights and dignities of coded consciousnesses where appropriate, and be prepared to correct any misunderstandings as they arise. That's really all any of us can do.

Something that worries me about schooling in relation to ChatGPT is the ratcheting effect it will have on work load and assignment design.
When I was in high-school, I didn’t cheat, but found out later my peers had been using some apps and websites (among other things) to effectively cheat on tests and assignments. The teachers had an inkling that such cheating was going on, and their solution was to make the assignments much more difficult than before to overcompensate for the perceived cheating. My grades didn’t suffer, but only because I ended up putting in way more time than normal for those assignments.
I’m sure other students simply suffered grade losses or got intel from other students on how to effectively cheat. But none of the students who used web clients to write papers or plagiarized answers really saw their grades suffer (other than not being able to answer easy content questions during class and looking stupid).
A more concrete example could also be the relationship between AI being used to write papers vs AI being used to check for cheating.
I was in school before ChatGPT was a thing, but I was still forced by the school to put my papers through plagiarism checkers.
There is no doubt in my mind that my school signed away the rights to my writing content to be used in the large language models that would become iterations of ChatGPT. And I would say the process is still ongoing, that whenever you submit a paper to be checked for plagiarism, no matter the service, that it is being used to train a large language model somewhere.
Which begs many questions and shows many problems, a significant one being, once a large language model is able to perfectly imitate my writing style, would I ever be able to escape the charges of plagiarism or honor code type violations involved using ChatGPT? If the plagiarism checkers feed the chatbots, and I feed the plagiarism checker, shouldn’t I be able to escape some culpability if my writing style matches to some degree? Where does that point lie, and can it even be measured?
All of this is also contingent on an even bigger question and that is “Can your average public school teacher even tell what good writing looks like anymore?”
I don’t really know the answers to any of these questions, but I can say that it seems like ChatGPT creates a lot more problems than it solves for an educational environment.

Note
u plagiarize a paper for your final exam only to realize your bigbang professor is the original writer of that paper now u is in big(bang) trouble
(Hehe I see what you did there 😌)
Taeyang: Hello, I am reaching out to you because as I was reading your final exam I noticed that it was quite familiar to my research paper "Ringa but does it Linga?: an analysis on liberation". Plagiarism is a serious violation of the academic code of ethics. I would have to report you to the department but because you deemed my research good enough for plagiarism, I will let you go with a warning and a failed grade.
Daesung: Hi, I noticed that you plagiarized my paper "How to find your own Universe?" on your final exam paper. I honestly am quite flattered but also quite concerned that you didn't check who the author of the paper was. While plagiarism is a major violation of academic ethics and a moral sin, I will let you rewrite your paper. I want to see your work not mine. I believe in you!
G-Dragon: bruh 🫥 seriously 😒 my plagiaring my work?? 💀 Like my paper "What is truly Crooked?" has won several academic awards and is considered a major breakthrough in the field and you decide to plagiarize it at my course? yikes. 🫣 Did you think nobody would notice? 🤔. If you plagiarize then do it correctly at least. Anyways, I kind of have to report you to the department. 👎🏻
T.O.P: You plagiarized my research paper "When does your dada doom?". I would have to report somewhere but I don't feel like it so you'll just get a failed grade.

Noah Sebastian x OFC
-
Here's the 3rd part. Hoping to also get this one up quick. This story is really coming together in my head. Also, I know I promised smut, and so far have not delivered. That is coming, pinkly promise. We've got to get the foundation man!
Warnings: Alcohol abuse, overall abuse, mild violence (ie. bar fights), smut, swearing, and altogether just a lot of fuckery.
+It goes without saying. This is a work of fiction. My words are mine. Plagiarism is a crime.
Part 3 - The Grey
Sleep was a wild idea, given everything I had learned last night. I couldn't seem to quit scrolling through Google, YouTube, listening. I felt as though I was educating myself. Learning, in some way, what I was getting into. I wanted to see what I could learn about him, but he was an overall private human, even for a musician.
I did learn he is a Scorpio, born on Halloween. Originally from Virginia. The names of his bandmates. He had quite a few wonderful songs that I had added to my iTunes quickly after hearing them. So far, my favorite was Limits, which was saying a lot, given Just Pretend was still so incredible.
Throughout all of my 'research', the most important fact I learned was that Noah was very good at hiding his alcoholism. I expected to see articles, tweets, or even a TikTok about some scandal. An arrest? A fight? A drunken performance? I found nothing.
I suspect Noah is what I consider a silent drunk. Someone who doesn't drink for fun, but for release. For something to escape to. This had to be true, because I found zero evidence of his addiction on social media or in the depths of Google. I even shamelessly searched 'Noah Sebastian alcoholic' and came up with some very strange fanfiction. Interesting thought...
This almost worried me more. This meant I was going into this blind. The rockstar lifestyle was something not only musicians lived. So how did he manage to do it so quietly? Was his publicist just that good? Did he even have one?
Despite my determination, sleep finally took hold about 4AM, me waking up at noon with the videos of their music still playing on YouTube. I slammed my laptop closed and wiped the drool from my lips.
I needed caffeine.
I slipped into my house slippers, and sauntered to the kitchen, Angel following behind. I heard his quiet whine, and quickly paced to the back door to let him out before he had an accident.
Once I had slurped down half of my energy drink and let Angel back in, I snatched my phone from my bedside table. Sitting on the edge of my bed, I checked through my notifications.
Given it was my day off, I wasn't surprised to see a text from Sam asking if I wanted to come in and help him with his case files. I didn't even open it. That should answer that question.
I opened my messages to reach out to Laura. Her and I needed to speak immediately.
Before I could open her thread, I noticed a message from Noah, which made my throat dry.
Noah: Hollywood Palladium. Doors open at 6PM, but you should get there about 5 to get into your suite. I'll text you once I get offstage and we can figure out how you'll smuggle me out. We go on before Motionless in White.
Noah: Thank you again, Leena. I know this is a pain for you.
This guy isn't actually real. He is sweet as honey. Smooth as butter. And wakes up at 6:30AM, apparently? Who the fuck is this guy?
Me: I'll be there. I haven't told Laura yet. Pray for me.
His response came quickly.
Noah: Our Father, who art in heaven. Hallowed be thy name...
I only responded with laughing emojis and flipped to Laura's thread.
Me: Can you talk?
This was our code. She was working and if she was busy, she would respond. If she wasn't, she'd call.
My phone vibrated in my hand immediately.
"Hey." My voice was a fucking mess. I realized I hadn't used it at all yet.
"What the fuck is up, Kyle? You getting sick?" I cleared my throat and sighed.
"No. Just woke up."
"Late night? You doing okay?" I could hear the concern. 3 years sober, didn't mean it wasn't still something to keep an eye on.
"Yeah babe, I'm good. I need to fucking talk to you, though."
"Sure, what's going on?"
I sighed, not even knowing how to begin. I couldn't exactly tell her the lead singer of one of her favorite bands was a newly recovering alcoholic. Not without permission.
"I uh..." My brain drew a blank. "have not thought this through."
The other end was silent.
"You sure you're okay?"
I sighed hard. "I met Noah Sebastian."
Now there was dead silence on the phone.
"I'm so fucking sorry, I've lost my mind. Can you repeat that?" Her voice was deadly.
"You heard me."
"Noah Sebastian? From Bad Omens?!" I could hear her voice raising some octaves.
"Yeah a few days ago."
"Fucking where?!" I had to hold the phone at a distance from my ear.
"At...my work." My brain worked overtime to work out this lie.
"I call bullshit." She is too good at seeing through me.
"Laura, would you fucking listen?"
"Noah Sebastian did not walk into a fucking mortgage office and just happen to meet my best friend, the loan officer. Bullshit."
"Laura, listen!"
"Fuck! Fine! What?!" I could feel her irritation.
"I have tickets to their show tonight. In their VIP booth."
"Did you help him buy a house or some shit?!" That actually wasn't bad.
"Possibly. Still up in the air."
"You're such a fucking liar."
"Do you want to go or not? We'll be seeing him after."
I could feel her jaw drop to the floor. "We're going to meet the band?"
"No, not the band. I don't think. Just Noah."
"Just Noah? Christ Mileena, did you fuck him or something?!"
"Absolutely not! Laura what the hell?!"
"What?? You don't even listen to Bad Omens." I scoffed at that.
"I fucking do now."
-
After a solid hour of interrogatories from Laura, planning on getting to the event (I would drive, obviously) and what we would wear, we finally hung up.
I had about three and a half hours before I had to leave to pick her up. I had enough time for a walk with Angel, lunch, and to get ready.
When Angel and I set out on the sidewalk, and I had set up my AirPods (3 guesses who I was listening to), my phone chimed with a text. I groaned. Didn't we get through enough details?
When I saw the text though, I was surprised to see Noah's name.
Noah: Hey, weird request, but could I call you for like ten minutes?
I was puzzled, but typed a quick affirmative response.
My phone rang a few moments later.
"Hello?"
"Hey, I'm sorry." His immediate apology confused me.
"Sorry for what?" I could hear him chuckle, his voice slightly hushed.
"Calling. I know it's weird." I half-smiled. There was a level of innocence to Noah that made me feel better about this entire situation.
"Noah, I'm your sponsor. You're allowed to call me any time, day or night."
"But what if I call you at 3AM cause I'm craving sugar?"
I shook my head, weaving down the sidewalk with Angel heeling nicely at my left.
"Then we go get ice cream?"
I could hear the smile in his voice. "No way. You don't mean that."
I proudly responded. "Wouldn't be the first time."
He only snorted in response. I did wonder why he needed to call.
"Are you okay?"
"Mm, yeah. We're at the venue. Did sound check a while ago. The guys cracked open some beers. I told them I was going to take a quick walk to get some air. I feel like they might know something." His concern was thick in his words.
"Ah, okay. Well, super proud of you for walking away. That's amazing on it's own."
"Yeah?" He sounded unsure.
"Oh, one hundred percent."
"Thanks Leena." He sighed. His voice then came out a little smoother. "Did you talk to Laura?"
"I did."
"And how did that go?"
I smirked. "Well, she doesn't believe that I met you at work, so now she's got horrific ideas of how I met you, but she's in."
This made him laugh. "Horrific like how?!"
"I won't repeat it. But either way, she doesn't know how we actually know each other. I'm struggling to figure out how I'm going to explain us giving you a ride home?"
He was quiet, my guess was thinking. "How well do you know her?"
"Better than anyone, why?"
"You trust her?"
"With my life."
"Tell her. It's easier that way. Just maybe ask we don't all chat about it?" This took me back. As private as he is, and he doesn't even know me that well? Why trust me, or someone I trust, with this secret? His reputation is somewhat on the line.
"You sure?"
"Should I not be?"
I sighed. "I wouldn't risk your good name Noah. I promise."
"Thanks Leena." I heard muffled voices in the background. "Hey, I've got to go. See you later?"
I agreed, and we disconnected the call.
-
The ride to the venue was mostly quiet, aside from the soft music on the radio playing.
"So...anything else I should know before we walk in there? Ronnie Radke isn't going to be hanging with us too, is he?"
I chuckled at this.
"Listen babe, I've got to tell you something."
She lifted her eyebrow in a knowing look. "Knew you were lying."
I shrugged. "Look, I'm going to tell you this, but this is covert level secrecy. No one can know. Or Noah is fucked. So promise me? Not even your husband gets to know?"
Her look turned more serious.
"Of course babe. Anything."
"I'm Noah's sponsor." Her jaw dropped open, almost unnaturally so.
"He's in AA too?" I nodded.
"He just started. And he needed a sponsor. I offered. He needed help getting through this show and the after party. So he's going to pretend to be sick after, meet us backstage, and we're going to smuggle him out and drive him home."
I could see the wheels in her head turning. She believed me now. She knew I never lied about AA.
"Oh my God, babe." She shook her head. "I'm so sorry. I pried too hard. Jesus, I feel like an asshole."
I waved her off. "Don't, my love. He gave me permission to tell you." She nodded at that, sitting back in her seat.
After a beat, she giggled to herself. "You sure are the luckiest sponsor ever." That made me laugh. I wasn't so sure yet.
-
The show was electric. The man on stage, singing, was a different person entirely. If it weren't for the fact that he made direct eye contact with me several times throughout the night, I would've never believed him to be the same shy, unsure, uncomfortable man he was in group. On stage, he was confident, he was in control, he was the leader, and the crowd, his flock. It was insane to watch, and I would be lying if I hadn't said I felt absolutely mystified at points. I teared up when they played Just Pretend, vehemently singing along. This was not lost on him, and I caught the smirk he got when he saw my glassy-eyed singing. No different than any other fan. That's okay, that's who I was for now.
We were to not be seen or noticed. We were shadows waiting to seamlessly remove him.
Once the set ended, and everyone waited for Motionless in White to come out, moving in and out of their seats toward the bars and bathrooms, Laura and I followed the security guard who had been told to allow us backstage.
I checked my phone a few times, but still had not heard from him. As we made our way to the meet and greet area, we saw the giant line of fans waiting for their band to show up. We slyly waited against a wall behind the line. We blended in.
"Have you heard from him?" I checked my phone again with no results.
"No, but I would bet he has to do meet and greet first. I don't strike him as the type to disappoint fans."
She nodded in agreement, so we waited.
After about twenty minutes, we heard screaming, and looked over to see them come out, waving at everyone waiting in line. I saw his eyes searching. Was he looking for us?
Pulling out my phone, I shot a quick message.
Me: By the trash cans.
He was talking to a girl with his face on her shirt when he slipped his phone from his pocket and his eyes immediately scanned and found mine. The smallest hint of a smile lifted his lips. I saw him turn his back for a moment, and turning back to sign autographs
Noah: Thought I lost you. M&G will be over in 45min. Meet me in the parking lot?
I sent a thumbs up, instructed Laura of our plans, and we began our trek to the car. Once in the car, I sent a quick location pin to him so he could find us. I got a response a few minutes later.
Noah: Just look for the ancient Tahoe. Roger that.
I rolled my eyes, and despite Laura watching her concert videos, she noticed.
"What?" I showed her my phone, and she smiled.
"Well, he's funny, huh?" I nodded.
"An absolute dork." She bit her lip, turning in my seat.
"Leena?" I looked up at her from my phone screen, looking at my own videos.
"Hmm?"
"Do you like him?" I paid little attention to the question.
"Oh sure, he's a nice guy." She put her hand on my shoulder, making me give her my full attention.
"No, Mileena," she pushed my phone down. "do you like him?"
This made me scoff. "Laura, I barely know him!"
"What's to know? He's a singer in a near famous band. He's got the voice of an angel. He's adorable." This made me roll my eyes again.
"I'm his sponsor." She threw her hands up.
"Is it illegal?" I shook my head.
"No, but it's awful and would make me a terrible human. And I work very hard to be a good human."
She narrowed her eyes at me. "I don't believe that, but okay. I respect it." I smiled at her.
"Thank you Laura."
"But I still think you like him."
I was silent in response, not amused by her pushing.
“He has a girlfriend anyway, Laura.”
I watched her eyes nearly bug out of her head. “He does?!”
“Yeah, he told me yesterday.” I could see the disbelief on her face.
“I’ve never heard that. What’s her name?” I sighed, thinking back to our conversation the day before.
“He…didn’t say? Just mentioned he had one, and she didn’t know about AA yet.”
Her lips pursed. “Not buying it.”
This made my eyes widen.
“What?”
“He has a girlfriend but doesn’t even tell you her name? And doesn’t tell her he’s made a life changing decision to get well? I’m not buying.”
I rolled my eyes. “Christ, Laura, you’ve got trust issues.”
She pointed at me. “Facts. But it doesn’t change the fact that I don’t believe it.” She sat back in her seat.
“I’ll just ask him when he gets here, no worries.”
This caused a flood of panic through me. “Please don’t! He’s not the type to talk about personal stuff. He’s actually pretty withdrawn.”
Her blank expression was telling. “Noah? Noah Sebastian? The guy who just went absolutely insane on that stage? Is withdrawn? Mhm, sure.”
I sat back in my chair and groaned.
“Please? That’s his personal business.”
She nodded. “Fine, but you should ask him.”
I didn’t respond, attention now on the text I had from him saying he was headed our way. I started the car, ready for a quick getaway.
After about ten minutes, I saw his tall frame in the doorway of the elevator, jogging over to the car. I snuck a glance at Laura, who looked as though she may absolutely burst.
“Here comes the rockstar.” She let out in a sing-song voice.
The back left door opened, and he slid inside the seat quickly, buckling his seatbelt and running his fingers through his long, and now greasy, hair.
“Hey!” My voice was about three pitches higher for truly no reason at all. This was not lost on my best friend, whose eyes I saw flash over to be before turning around and looking at Noah, eyes absolutely bulging.
“Jesus, it’s like trying to escape a wild pack of hyenas!” He sat back and sighed heavily as my truck backed out of the space and began moving down the aisle. “I mean the guys, not the fans.”
I looked up in my rearview. “Did you do like we talked about?”
“Yes. Made sure to gag as loudly as possible and everything.” I could see the smile crinkling the corners of his eyes.
He turned his attention to Laura, holding out his hand. “I’m so rude, I’m sorry.” She took his hand, looking absolutely stunned. “I’m Noah.”
All I heard from her was a weak ‘Laura’ in response.
Once we hit the darkened streets, putting the venue behind us, the tension in the truck relaxed.
I looked up in my mirror again, catching Noah’s attention.
“Do you mind if I drop Laura home first? She’s got to get up early for work tomorrow and her house isn’t very far.”
He smiled. “Of course. I’m all the way in Calabasas, so no worries at all.”
I just nodded. The ride was smooth for a moment, until I heard the familiar ring of an iPhone. It was Noah’s.
“Hello?” I couldn’t hear the voice from the other end. “Hey babe.”
Laura’s face whipped over to me, I’m sure seeing my expression darken ever so slightly.
“Yeah, I’ll be okay. I’m not sure what happened, but I started feeling off before the set and by the end, I was throwing up.” He waited for the response. “No, uh…” he hesitated. “I actually haven’t drank at all today.”
Something in my chest swelled. I was such a proud sponsor. He was making an effort, and all I could do was appreciate it.
He nervously laughed. “Yeah, right? Shocking, I know.”
I could hear his tone. It broke my heart for him. I knew that conversation, I had many myself. When people don’t believe you haven’t been drinking, or are shocked to hear it. They’ll even go so far as to get angry at you for quitting. It’s a long, torturous road he’s set down, but hopefully with the right support, he will stay on track.
“Well I just caught an Uber, and I’m going to go home and pass out. Try to get over it.”
I made a conscious effort not to look at him, doing my best to respect his privacy. I could see Laura doing the same, scrolling through her phone.
“Yeah, uh, maybe we should wait until Monday? Make sure I’m not contagious, and all that?” His voice almost sounded brightened, but I was likely imagining things.
“Yeah, yeah, I know. But do you want to catch this crap?” He made a sound of approval. “Thought so. I’m almost home so I’ll talk to you later babe.” He wasn’t, but okay. “Mhm, I love you too.” Slight poke to the abdomen. Nothing to worry about. “Bye.”
My hands relaxed slightly on the wheel. No one spoke for a little while. I could see his eyes just watching the streetlights fly past the window. He almost looked sad, but I couldn’t piece together why exactly. I could guess, however, that this is harder than he initially anticipated. It always is.
Laura shared my concern, so she spoke up.
“The show tonight was awesome, Noah! Better than the one back in November!”
This sure perked him, making him sit up in his seat. “Yeah? Thank you for saying that.”
“Oh fuck yeah, dude! Watching you guys play is spiritual, honestly.” This made him crack a wide grin.
I felt a poke on my shoulder, causing me to look up.
“What’d you think Leena? How was your first Bad Omens show?” I could see him searching for my answer, but he’s not the only one who could be a smartass.
I waved my hand in a topsy-turvy fashion. “It was alright.”
“Oh shut the fuck up, you cried during Just Pretend.” Laura was triumphantly smiling.
She’s so dead.
My cheeks were getting warmer, and I instinctively cracked my window. When did it get so hot in here?
Noah let out a giggle, an actual fucking giggle. “I thought I saw that.”
“Dude, how can you see anything up there? Fire? Smoke? Lights?”
He shook his head dismissively and flopped back in his seat. “Please. I can see anything if I’m looking for it.”
His words rang out followed by silence. Laura’s face was deadpanned.
What the fuck does that mean? In a literal sense, I get what he meant but wow, what an innuendo to make. Unintentionally, I’m sure.
The context wasn’t lost on Noah, who only cleared his throat, not speaking another word.
Luckily, we were already cruising down Laura’s street, stopping in front of her driveway.
“Welp, this is my stop.” She turned to look in the backseat. “Thank you so much for the concert. It really was awesome.”
This earned her a grateful head nod from him. “Anytime.”
She wouldn’t be forgetting that.
“I love you babes, call me tomorrow?” She wrapped an arm around me while I agreed to her request. She hopped out of the car and within seconds, she was gone.
“You want to stay back there, or hop up front?”
Without answering, a long leg reached over my console, plopping Noah in the passenger’s seat. I stared at him incredulously while he beamed at me.
I shook my head and put the truck back in drive, waiting for him to direct me to his house.

Fresh Snow
some drabbles of kim dokja's company during a snow day, before the story of orv starts
-
One could say Kim Dokja was lucky for reaching his apartment before the snowstorm truly picked up. Another could say he was unlucky for the storm happening exactly on the night he meant to go grocery shopping. And the first would argue with the second, saying if he’d just checked the weather forecast a day earlier he wouldn’t even be in this situation, so that couldn’t be called bad luck, only a lack of forethought…
…Damn it, he really was hungry.
It was lucky he had time to eat lunch during work today, and unlucky he had literally nothing left in his fridge or pantry now for dinner. Clear proof that trying to cut himself off from instant noodles was a mistake.
The cold was worse than the hunger, though. Kim Dokja knew this building had terrible insulation, but now he was feeling the lack of it seep into his bones. Wasn’t it some building code violation to let the temperatures indoors drop this low? Of course, having the time or money to do anything about that was out of the question, but he could daydream taking his bastard landlord to court anyway.
For now, he just had to bear it. If the Iron-Blooded Supreme King Yoo Joonghyuk could withstand being plunged into the coldest depths of Poseidon’s ocean, then Completely Average Salaryman Kim Dokja could definitely triumph over a particularly cold Seoul night…!
Before he could cringe himself to death over that thought, a notification popped up on his phone. A new chapter of Three Ways to Survive in a Ruined World? tls123 had announced another hiatus earlier this week, which from previous experience would last a couple days longer, so he hadn’t expected an update today. Maybe, they’d come back early just to save him—?
>> lol there ws rly smn like this… s5gir antis r so sad
Unfortunately, it was only a reply to a comment he’d made years ago. Specifically, one on a chapter of SSSSS-Grade Infinite Regressor pointing out how obviously “Yoo Joonhyun” was ripping off his Joonghyuk-ie…
The person who replied had probably assumed his account was old enough to have been abandoned, especially with how much backlash his comments had gotten then. So they’d surely be in for a shock if the original commenter shot back with definitive proof of this so-called author’s plagiarism.
…Kim Dokja was twenty-seven now. Having graduated university despite all odds he now “contributed to society” by going through the motions of a meaningless QA job, so he would definitely be considered an adult. Definitely too old to participate in flame wars online. Definitely too mature to start typing up a cool reply (carefully composed, he couldn’t seem like he was letting emotion get to his head) on how much evidence he’d collected to support his point (all saved to a draft on his personal email account, so he could access it wherever) and how they should at least apologize to tls123-nim in place of this pretentious “writer” who still refused to…
And really, ‘s5gir’? With an abbreviation that clunky, no wonder they had to copy someone. Couldn’t even come up with a decent title.
Only after posting the reply did Kim Dokja realize he’d completely forgotten about the cold while typing.

Useful free tools for writing.
More of the incidental tools that I find useful, regardless of how one usually writes that are often known in the writing community, but you might not know?
One Look dictionary
Reverse word look up. You know when you're getting stumped on a word you kinda know, but only can get the definition of, or you want to make sure your 3-word phrase can't be said more succinctly? Yeah, this resource should help. (The underline is a link)
Google Docs
I should note that after about 100K words, it starts to struggle. But it's good for editing, collab work, spreadsheets, and also keeping track of your previous drafts so if someone says, "But, but you plagiarized from me," you have a log saying you didn't, so you can say, "you likely took from me."
And so on.
Libre Office–because not everyone wants to deal with Google Docs or can afford Microsoft office. It also has a recovery function, so if it crashes, you can get your words back. (Microsoft Office often doesn't?)
Use it for formatting your manuscripts. For the editors out there, accept ODT format. This is absolutely free and sometimes it doesn't port well.
Rhyming dictionaries–yes, they exist. The slant rhyming is also useful. There are slant rhyming dictionaries too.
The almighty square bracket. []
To all of you discovery writers out there that can't afford Scrivener. This is the tool for you. You've written and dumped all this information into the text that shouldn't belong there, but you want to keep it. What do you do? You square bracket it.
If not that, there is also the curly bracket if you need a sub category. {
It's great for:
Editing notes.
Please expand this note to yourself.
Examine this phrase later because you moved on, but it doesn't sound right.
Cataloging important information you might need at a later date.
Info dumping that you want to break up.
Storing long descriptions you want to use elsewhere.
You're too lazy to catalog in your world building notes great information.
You have ADHD and some other idea has occurred to you, but it's totally off topic. Square bracket.
To avoid plagiarism 'cause you forgot you pulled a source.
If you're one of those super detailed people, you can also color code it. The reason is that both curly and square brackets almost never show up in manuscripts. <> sometimes does, but also often doesn't.
The best part is no matter your program, format, or keyboard, you have it.
Note that this doesn't work for Japanese as well, but Japanese also have access to {} which is why I noted it here.
Spreadsheets
You need to make a calendar for your planet and need the quick calculations.
You need to make a morpheme list for your mythical language.
You want to delineate gender quickly.
This usually comes with Google Spreadsheets, Microsoft Office and Libre Office. But writers often (me included) forget they exist.
But they are useful for more than number crunching. And some writers use them for plotting too.
For Fantasy/SF writers: Donjon:
The whole website, but particularly the Fantasy Calendar maker is useful.
Google Search: Quotes.
You want to fact check a quote. Or you got distracted and forgot to put in the citation information.
To be or not to be
is horrible search for. So what you do is this: "To be or not to be."
And you might get Will Shakespeare.
BTW, Goodreads is a horrible horrible source for finding out where quotes came from. Make sure you have the actual page number/place it was said with the surrounding quotes.
Equally, the -[item] is also often useful when you're searching.
You're looking up say... Kimchi, and you want search results that don't have napa in it You would type "kimchi -napa"
You are researching... I hope, I hope.
Public domain books: Project Gutenberg
You need a back issues of Gustav Freytag's Dies Techniks des dramas.
You need the quote from Anne of Green Gables.
You want to check if this Winnie the Pooh quote is in the earlier or later works because of public domain issues.
You need to read The Art of War for the tenth time.
You need to read Machiavelli's The Prince, because you are writing politics and war.
This is the place to find it. Sometimes, sometimes it is public domain, but it's not in there.
Library
Libby (app), for example. Sign up for it. Get a library card and you'll save yourself money. Some countries don't have one, but for the ones that do, you can read print books and consume audiobooks at home.
Often self-pubbed books are on there too. If you have an amazon account then you can use the kindle app with it.
Sometimes you can also go to university libraries and though you can't check anything out, you can use their catalogs to look up things. You sometimes have to be there, but often they give links to free resources in their catalogs and might be easier to use than JSTOR. You don't have to be a student. Just be respectful of the people there, and try to put the books back where you found them. (usual library stuff).
This will save you going to Hawaii for the University of Hawaii, for example, because you know they have some awesome East Asian resources.

i wanted to believe u but theyre both traced from the still (all 3 line up perfectly) so how can this person be stealing your work?
My drawing is also embedded in theirs, which explains the exact pencil/pen line blemishes (not sure how that is possible with a real photograph to be exactly the same...? Considering it is not even a life drawing, which you could say would look identical if someome was extremely accurate, but yes you are correct, their lines, as I said, are literally exact traces of mine (or simply added onto mine) as well as the expression specifically the same as I did not fully capture Sams face, so there's no reason why theirs would somehow turn out to be exactly the same art style as mine when they could of drawn his face better than I did, if, they can), reverse image searching theirs shows up. :) Computer goes by coding. Therefore, the code of my image is in theirs. Therefore, my drawing is actually in their work. If they had done it separately, it would not show up obviously in a reverse search going by mine, which was done months before theirs. It doesn't exactly matter if you don't believe me, with all the evidence quite clearly there, the ways you check if plagiarism has happened as you don't seem to know how to check that, which isn't your fault, but I don't appreciate heinous anons sent to me about "not believing" me, when it's very clear that I did this first, with proof of production to boot. I'm not quite sure why you have such an issue with me mentioning my work has been stolen, anyway?

Fun fact, tumblr allows 250 links on the old editor and 100 in the new. So. Network of masterlists.
Make a Choice!
Your favorite character is a mad scientist of the engineering subspecies. As a child, teenager, or sleep-deprived young adult, what random appliance have they taken apart and possibly set on fire in the course of trying to "improve it?" New and unanticipated sentience for the appliance optional.
Anti-plagiarism check! Pick your favorite citation format.
You can only pick one: Jokes about how white people don't know how to spice or season food. Jokes about how white people shotgun cinnamon the second September hits.
Is it vaguely dystopian for large elementary and secondary schools to have numbers instead of/before names? (e.g. the students of PS 91Q only know it by that code, not Richard Arkwright)

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I wrote an essay on this topic, which is what the comic is based off of. If you care to read it it's beneath the cut , as well as my works Cited, and alt text.
This was a college English assignment, first the essay then the multimodal project. I wanted to share it with the internet people on my phone because this is something that is important to me. (i added it up and i spent roughly 40+ hours on this comic in two weeks, guys, the carpal tunnel is coming for me...)
i would also like to give a huge thanks to some of my best friends for helping me, @ellalily my wonderful talented friend who i love so much and adore their work. (i love her art so much). I know you'll see this, love you king <22223333.
and my partner, @totallynotagremlin . amazing artist and the person i admire every day. thankyou for helping me with this and listening to me rant about this project. i love you so much *kisses you on the forehead.
If anyone reads this, please go check out their art.
THE ESSAY
If you're not paying attention you could mistake AI art for art made by real artists. Many people use AI without much knowledge about it, thinking it's something harmless and fun. However, AI art has a real impact on the art community. AI art is largely harmful to the art community because it negatively impacts artists by stealing and plagiarizing their work.
Knowing how AI generators create art provides important context in understanding the negative impacts of AI-generated art and why it is bad. In an article by The Guardian, Clark L. explains, “The AI has been trained on billions of images, some of which are copyrighted works by living artists, it can generally create a pretty faithful approximation”. On its own, this doesn't sound that bad, and many fail to see the issue with this. However, the corporations training these AI art generators use artists' work without their knowledge or consent. Stable diffusion, an online AI art generator, has provided artists the option to opt out of future iterations of the technology training. However, the damage has already been done. AI is ‘trained’ by being fed images. It analyzes them. It works by being given large amounts of data and input codes. In an article by  The Guardian, written by Clark L, there is a quote from Karla Ortiz, an illustrator, and board member of CAA, concerning this issue. She says, “It’s like someone who already robbed you saying, ‘Do you want to opt out of me robbing you?”.
Another article by Yale Daily News has several categories, the first being, “How does AI generate art”.  As the heading explains, the first section of the article explains how AI text-to-image generators like DALL-E2 and Midjourney create images by “analyzing data sets containing thousands to millions of images” (Yup K.). In the same article, they cite an artist, Ron Cheng, a Yale Visual Arts Collective board member who is against AI because AI fails to obtain consent from artists before stealing their art. Cheng says “There are enough artists out there where there shouldn't really be a need to make AI to do that.” (Yup K.). The article says Cheng views AI as a tool but not at the cost of the people who spent their lives developing artistic skills.
Many artists feel that they should be compensated or that this should fall under copyright laws but because proving this machine-made art has taken elements of their style is so difficult, the AI companies get off with no consequences. For an artist to take action against an AI image generator, they would have to prove that one of their art pieces had been copied into the system which can be difficult. They would have to prove specific elements of their personal art style have been directly copied and prove that their art has been used and imitated without their consent. Many artists feel that this technology will take their jobs and opportunities in the creative field of work. Kim Leutwyler, a six-time Archibald Prize finalist artist, expressed her issues with AI companies stealing her art in an ABC news article.  Leutwyler said that they had found almost every portrait they created, included in a database used to train AI without their knowledge or consent. They said it “feels like a violation” (Williams T.).
With AI art relying on, often, stolen artwork, and creating an interpretation of what it sees, it blurs the line between what is copyright infringement and what is not. In a BBC article by Chris Vallance,  Professor Lionel Bently, director of the Centre for Intellectual Property and Information Law at Cambridge University said that in the UK, “it's not an infringement of copyright in general to use the style of somebody else” (Vallance). Another point to keep in mind is that not many artists have the means to fight these legal battles for their art even if they wanted to. This same BBC article speaks about the Design and Artists Copyright Society (DACS), an organization that collects payments on behalf of artists for the use of their images. One quote helps illustrate their point, “I asked DACS’ head of policy Reema Aelhi if artists’ livelihoods are at stake. “Absolutely yes,” she says” (Vallance).
Another concern about AI mentioned in this article is deep fakes, porn, and bias. “Google warned that the data set of scraped images used to train AI systems often includes pornography, reflected social stereotypes, and contained “derogatory, or otherwise harmful associations to marginalize identity groups.” (Vallance). These are all important things to consider when using AI because an AI system can harmfully replicate biases and negative stereotypes because of what it learned. For example, if you input the prompt criminal, it is more likely for the image to be of a person of color. On the other hand, if you input the prompt, CEO, it is strongly probable that an image of an old white man in a suit will show up, not a woman, or a person of color. These stereotypes go much further and much deeper than just these two examples, but the AI recreates what it was taught and can follow patterns that are harmful to minorities.
Another concern many artists have is about their jobs and livelihoods. With how AI art has progressed in the past few years, it is starting to take opportunities from real artists. “It’s been just a month. What about in a year? I probably won’t be able to find my work out there because [the internet] will be flooded with AI art,” Rutkowski told MIT Technology Review (Clarke L.). Many of the articles I researched mentioned the Colorado State Art Fair, where an AI-generated image won first place. The BBC article written by Vallance talks about how a man (Allan) entered an AI-generated image mid-journey and won. Many artists were outraged by this and suddenly aware of how AI could take opportunities like these from them. The artists who entered this competition spent hours and hours on their pieces. As you can imagine they were angry, rightfully so, that an AI-generated piece that took no more than a few seconds won. There is a level of unfairness to this and many artists feel that AI should not be allowed in art competitions like this. It feels like they got cheated out of something they worked hard for. Nobody would let a robot compete in the Olympics or a cooking competition, so why should a machine be allowed to enter an art fair? AI could start taking jobs from artists working on animated projects, or taking commissions.
With AI’s ability to imitate a certain artist's style, some people may feel that they no longer have to pay an artist for work when they could just input a few words into a machine and get something done in seconds. There were artist and writer strikes in Hollywood, in part because of this. These creative people wanted to be paid fairly and have better working conditions, as well as a promise that not all of them would be replaced with AI. When SORA AI came out, I saw many artists online who aspired to have jobs in the animation industry, losing hope and motivation. A soulless and emotionless machine can rip away a lifelong hobby and passion.
Many artists were upset but Allen, the winner of the Colorado State Art Fair, stood by his point and said, “It's over. AI won. Humans lost” (Clark L.). The article quoted a game and concept artist, RJ Palmer's tweet, “This thing wants our job, it's actively anti-artist”.  The article speaks of how artists often take inspiration from other artists, “great artists steal”, but Mr. Palmer said, “This (AI) is directly stealing their essence in a way”. In an article by The Guardian, Clarke L. writes about how AI art has raised debates on just how much AI can be credited with creativity.  Human art has thoughts, memories, and feelings put behind it and takes a lot of skill, whereas, on the opposite end, AI art can't handle concepts like that. AI does not experience life like real people do. It does not have feelings or emotions and it can only think with the knowledge we give it. Since it cannot have these emotions, the art it creates will never have the emotions that art made by real artists has.
Cansu Canca, a research associate professor at Northeastern University and founder and director of the AI Ethics Lab said, “It is important to be mindful about the implications of automation and what it means for humans who might be ‘replaced’” (Mello-Klein, C.). She went on to say that we shouldn't be fearful but instead ask what we want from machines and how we can best use them to benefit people. The article says “With the push of a button, he was able to create a piece of art that would have taken hours to create by hand” (Mello-Klein, C.). Some artists said, “We’re watching the death of artistry unfold right before our eyes” (Mello-Klein, C.). In an article by the New Yorker, Chayka, K., started by giving three reasons why artists feel wronged by AI image generators that are trained using their artwork. The “three C’s”, they didn't consent, they were not compensated and their influence was not credited. The article states how it is hard for copyright claims based on style to get picked up because in visual art “courts have sometimes ruled in favor of the copier rather than the copied” (Chayka, K.). This applies to music as well, where some songs can sound similar but nothing will be done about it because they are different enough, or the source material was changed enough not to be seen as a complete copy. The article said, “In some sense. You could say that artists are losing their monopoly on being artists” (Chayka, K.). Some people are even hiring AI to make book covers instead of hiring artists.
While I am personally against the use of AI art as well as many of my artist friends, all people have their own opinions about the technology. The article by the New Yorker, written by Chayka, K, quotes Kelly Mckernan, who said they watch Reddit and Discord chats about AI. This provides opinions on some everyday people who aren't in the art field. on the situation and said, “They have this belief that career artists, people who have dedicated their whole lives to their work, are gatekeeping, keeping them from making the art they want to make. They think we’re elitist and keeping our secrets.” (Chayka, K.). I remember an acquaintance of mine said that he used AI art because he could not afford to commission an artist. Not everyone can afford to commission an artist and pay them fairly for their time. However, this does not mean artists should settle for less than their work is worth. Art takes time and that is time the artist could be doing something else.
Northeastern Global contacted Derek Curry, an associate professor of art and design at Northeastern, who gave his thoughts on the subject and he does not believe AI art will ever replace humans because technology has limits. “The cycle of fear and acceptance has occurred with every new technology since the dawn of the industrial age, and there are always casualties that come with change” (Mello-Klein, C.). The article goes on to say how auto-tune was once controversial but it has become a music industry standard. It's used as a tool, and AI art could be similar. It is true that with new technology, people always fear it before it is accepted. For example, the car. People feared it would take jobs and replace people, and this did happen, but it offered more convenience and opened up more jobs for people than it took. Now cars are used by everyone and it is almost impossible to get around in America without one because it wasn't made for walking, it was built around roads. There are many more examples of people fearing a new technology before accepting it, so this could be the case with AI, but for AI to be used as a tool and aid to artists, greedy corporations have to change the way they think about the technology. They have to see it as, not a replacement, but a tool. Big animation companies want to replace a lot of their human artists, who need their jobs to support themselves and their families, with AI. This prospect is something that is discouraging to artists who want to enter the animation field, which is already competitive.
The Yale Daily News (Yup, K.), cites Brennan Buck, a senior critic at the Yale School of Architecture. He uses AI as a tool to colorize and upscale images. He does not think AI is a real threat to artists. This is a very different take from most artists I’ve heard about and talked to. I can see how this technology can be used as a tool and I think that is one of the only right ways to use AI art. It should be used as a tool, not a replacement. Another way AI art can be used as a tool is to learn how to draw. New artists can study how art is made by looking at colors and anatomy for inspiration, though it should be taken with a grain of salt because AI tends to leave out details, and things merge and some details make no sense. These are all things real artists would notice and not do in their pieces. Young artists could also study the process of real artists they admire. Getting good at art takes years and practice. Seeing all kinds of different art can help with the learning process. On the topic of some people feeling like AI is not a real threat to artists, some people feel that eventually the technology will fade in popularity and will become more of a tool. Only time can tell if AI art will take the jobs of artist.
With everything being said, AI art is actively harming artists and the art community. Even if some artists like Brennan Buck feel that AI isn't a real threat to artists, presently, it is taking opportunities and jobs from artists and it will only get worse as the technology progresses. We need to prioritize real artists instead of a machine, a machine that will never be able to replicate the authenticity of living people's art that reflects their experiences and lives. Some artists use art to express and spread awareness of real-life issues. I have neurodivergent, transgender and queer friends who create art to show what it feels like to experience the world when it seems everyone is against you. I make art to reflect the beautiful things I see and read. I too am queer and fall under the trans umbrella term and I'm autistic, and I use art as a way to express myself through these things that make up my identity.
AI could never put the emotion that real people put into the things they create. Art is a labor of love and pain. Art like Félix González-Torres free candy contemporary art piece cannot ever be replicated by AI and have the same meaning. He “created nineteen candy pieces that were featured in many museums around the world. Many of his works target HIV”(Public Delivery, n.d.). The opinions and views on this, relatively, new technology differ from person to person. Some artists view generative AI art as a tool to utilize in their art while others see it as a threat and something that is taking away from artists. AI art can be used for bad, as it has and will be used to make deep fakes unless limitations are put on it. The AI systems are trained on thousands of images of real people and of art made by artists, all without their consent and most of the time, without their knowledge. On the other hand, some artists use it to aid their process and don't see the issue. Based on what I have learned, I do not think AI art is good, nor should it have a place in the creative job fields. Companies should not copy and steal work from artists. Artists work their whole lives to learn to create, and that should not be replaced by a machine.
ALT TEXT (I didn't know where to put the alt text, sorry, also, this is the first time I've ever done alt text so I'm sorry if its not the greatest, i tried. if you have feedback though, that would be greatly appreciated)
