I don’t know about the rest of you, but generally the first thing I want to do whenever I’ve read something awesome on AO3 is check out everything else the author has written in the same fandom. So it’s a little annoying that the tags in AO3 fic headers take you to the site-wide tag results -- nothing author-specific -- while clicking the author’s name often means hunting through dozens of other fandoms for the one you want.
So being exactly that sort of nerd, I wrote a Greasemonkey script to fix it. Here’s how it looks in action.

You can find it here on greasyfork. Should work on Greasemonkey (Firefox), Violentmonkey (Firefox and Chrome) and Tampermonkey (Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Edge and pretty much anything else). Read on below if you need more help sorting out how to install it -- I realise not everyone’s an old hand with this stuff.
Please do share this one if you’re so inclined -- I’m sure this could be useful to more folks if they know it’s out there.
What it does
You’ll need to have a fic open to see the script in action -- only tags in fic headers are affected, not search listings.
For ‘standard’ tags (freeform, rating, category): the script will add an extra asterisk after each tag with a link to filtered results for [that tag] + [the author]. You can customise the script to use a different character/s, but *’s are the default.
For ‘important’ tags (fandom, character and pairing): we go a step further and print the number of fics that user has posted using that same tag, to show at a glance which links are worth checking out. Anything greater than 1 (meaning yes, the author has posted more with this tag) appears in bold.
A note on loading times: Counting tags like this does mean pre-loading a bunch of extra pages, which can increase loading times on bad connections (this would be why we’re not printing counts for freeform tags as well). But if that becomes an issue, you can turn off the counts altogether with one of the option variables near the top of the script, and it’ll just produce *’s for everything (or any other text you’d prefer to replace it with). The search results page is a bit of a hack -- the checkbox for the tag should usually select correctly in the right menu, but for the cases where it doesn't (non-canonical freeform tags, etc), I've left in an “Author QuckSearch” sub-title (red arrow below) to clarify what tag you're filtering by. You can also set the script to automatically sort results by Date, Kudos or Word Count using the autoSortResultsBy variable. Here’s how it should look if everything’s working -- using results for my own fic with the Venom (2018) tag as an example:

As it stands, the script should work for fic with multiple authors, author pseudonyms, and regardless of whether you’re reading a full work or a chapter. Tag counts won’t display for orphan_account fics -- tag links should still work there, but (for obvious reasons) won’t actually be author-specific.
How to install it
If you’re unfamiliar with Greasemonkey and its various derivatives, it’s effectively a browser add-on that lets you install other add-ons which can be written by anyone with a decent grasp of javascript. Handy little tool.
Which *monkey you need to install will depend on what browser you’re using. These are the ones I’ve tested it with.

Introduction to Web Components

When you begin your journey as a developer, you learn that you should reuse code as much as possible. For front-end development, though, it is not so easy. When you have to create custom markup structures, they end up in being complex in style and script and using them multiple times can turn your page into a mess. Web Components, that are called the building blocks of web applications, promise to solve such problems.
Web components are a set of web platform APIs that allow us to create custom, reusable and encapsulated HTML tags for web pages and web apps. Such custom components and widgets build on the established standards, can work across various browsers, and can be used with any JavaScript library or framework that works with HTML.
Web components specifications
Web components incorporate four (in certain classifications, three) main technologies that can be used together to create versatile custom elements with encapsulated and reusable functionality:
Custom Elements
Custom elements are in essence fully-valid HTML elements, just like <div>, or <article>, but they have custom templates, behaviors and tag names (e.g. <one-dialog>) made with JavaScript APIs. They would always have a hyphen in their name, like <calendar-slider> and browser vendors have committed to create no new built-in elements containing a dash in their names to prevent conflicts. They can be used out-of-the-box with today’s most popular frameworks, including Angular, React, Vue, etc. with minimal effort. Custom elements contain their own semantics, behaviors, markup that can be checked in the HTML Living Standard specification.

As you can see, custom elements (in this case, <component-example>) must in some way extend an HTMLElement in order to be registered with the browser.
Shadow DOM
The shadow DOM is an encapsulated version of the DOM. It isolates DOM fragments from one another, including anything that could be used as a CSS selector and the corresponding styles, in a somewhat similar to <iframe> manner. At the same time, when we create a shadow root, we still have total control over that part of our page, but scoped to a context. It is critically important as it ensures that a component will work in any environment even if the page has other CSS or JavaScript. More information on how to use encapsulated style and markup in web components can be found in the shadow DOM specification.
Example:
To attach a shadow root, we should run something like:

HTML Template
The HTML <template> element allows us to stamp out reusable templates of code inside a normal HTML flow that is not immediately rendered, but can be used at a later time when called upon. You can write a template of any shape or structure that could be created at a later time. To learn how to declare fragments of markup that go unused at page load, but can be instantiated later on at runtime you can check the HTML template element specification.

The example above doesn’t render any content until a script has consumes the template, instantiates the code and tells the browser what to do with it.
ES Modules
ES Modules is the recent ECMAScript standard for working with modules. The standardization of a module system for browsers completed with ES6 and browsers started implementing it, so that now ES Modules are supported in Chrome, Safari, Edge and Firefox (since version 60). Modules as collections of smaller components that can be reused in our application, let developers encapsulate all kinds of functionality, and expose this functionality to other JavaScript files, as libraries. The process of including JS documents in a standards based, modular, performant way is defined in the ES Modules specification.

Cost-efficiency: Developers will have the ability to focus solely on making native reusable components, similar to LEGOs, and use these blocks in other applications across teams, which in the end saves money;
Faster deployments: Having ready-made code blocks, developers will be able to build and deploy applications more quickly. This leads to less time devoted to developing new features;
Quality improvement: As a by-product of reusing and reviewing the same code multiple times, the overall quality will improve in the course of time.
How to use web components?
To use a custom element you can simply import it and use the new tags in an HTML document. The ways to install custom elements, though can vary. Most elements today can be installed with NPM, but it is recommended to look at the README for the commands to install the specific element. NPM also handles installing the components’ dependencies. For more information on NPM, see npmjs.com.
Generally speaking, using a custom element is no different to using a <div> or any other element. Instances can be declared on the page, created dynamically in JavaScript, event listeners can be attached, and so on.
Libraries for building web components
Many libraries already exist that make it easier to build web components, including the following that we find useful:
Polymer provides a set of features for creating custom elements.
Slim.js provides data-binding and extended capabilities for components, using es6 native class inheritance.
Stencil generates standards-compliant web components.
Hybrids is a UI library for creating Web Components.
Angular provides the createCustomElement() function for converting an Angular component, together with its dependencies, to a custom element.
HTML and DOM specs already add features to support web components, letting web developers easily extend HTML with new elements with encapsulated styling and custom behavior. This proves that web components are already our present and it is time we start using them in applications.

Many internet users have no idea just how much data is available to websites they are visiting, so it’s worth exploring just what is in our present.

IP Address and Geolocation API
Like any good gift giver, we better write on the tag. 
To: <website server> From: <your IP address>
Your IP (Internet Protocol) address is a little 32-bit (now possibly 128-bit) number that uniquely identifies your device on the Internet. This is by design; people need to be able to address you to be able to send you any packets. A static 1:1 mapping of devices to IPs is definitely a massive exaggeration today as as we use technologies to let multiple devices share one IP, dynamically acquire an IP for each session, and our ISPs (Internet Service Providers) may also dynamically assign our IP address.
Nonetheless, IP addresses have (again by design) another function; location addressing. This is because when you’re internet traffic is propagating through the Internet (a global network of routers) it needs to know where it physically needs to go, and fast. Owing to this, the internet has taken on a hierarchical structure, with different ISPs servicing different geographical regions. These ISPs are tiered such that lower tier ISPs service specific subsets of the upper level tier’s region, providing more geographical specificity. It is this property of IP addresses that allows anyone with your IP address to get a rough idea where you are in the world. Moreover, IP addresses from specific subnets like AARNet (for Australian Universities) can be a giveaway for your location.
Try Googling “my ip” or “where am i”. There are many IP to Geolocation API services available. I have made use of https://ipgeolocation.io/, which has a generous free tier 🙏.

User Agent
Every request your browser makes to a server is wrapped up with a nice little UserAgent String bow, that looks a little like this,
User-Agent: Mozilla/<version> (<system-information>) <platform> (<platform-details>) <extensions>
Oh how sweet 😊 it’s our Operating System, our browser and what versions we of each we are running, and if the server is lucky, perhaps a few extra details.
Here are a few examples from MDN:

Why might this be a problem? Allow me to direct you towards my earlier post on Drive-By Attacks. Vulnerabilities are often present in specific versions of specific platforms. If an exploit server detects that your particular version of Chrome for Windows (for example) has a known vulnerability, well then prepare to be infected.

Navigator
Okay, I think we’ve been polite enough, it’s time to rip this packaging open! Ooh what is this inside? It’s an invitation to our browser of course! 
When we send off a request to a web server complete with our IP and User Agent string, the web server will typically respond by sending us a web page to render. These days a web page can be anything from a single HTML file with a few verses from a dead poet, to a fully fledged JavaScript application. To support this development, browsers are exposing more and more functionality/system information through a special JavaScript interface called Navigator.

The Navigator interface represents the state and the identity of the user agent. It allows scripts to query it and to register themselves to carry on some activities.
...to carry on some activities... I wonder. The list of available properties and methods is pretty comprehensive so I’ll just point out a few interesting ones.
getBattery() (have only seen this on chrome)
connection (some details about your network connection)
hardwareConcurrency (for multithreading)
plugins (another important vector for Drive-Bys)
storage (persisted storage available to websites)
clipboard (requires permissions, goodness plz be careful)
doNotTrack (i wonder who checks this...)
vibrate() (because haptic is the only real feedback)
While I’ve got it in mind, here’s a wonderful browser localStorage vulnerability I stumbled across https://github.com/feross/filldisk.com. There’s a 10MB per site limit, but no browser is enforcing this quota across both a.something.com and b.something.com...
I have no idea why Chrome thinks it’s useful to expose your battery status to every website you visit... Personally, the clipboard API feels the most violating. It requires permissions, but once given you’re never asked again. Control/Command + V right now and see what’s on your clipboard. I doubt there’s many web pages that you’d actually want to be able to read your clipboard every time you visit.

Social Media Side Channel / CSRF
Okay, now we’re getting a little cheeky. It’s actually possible to determine if a browser has an authenticated session with a bunch of social media platforms and services.
It’s a well known vulnerability (have a laughcry at some of the socials responses), which abuses the redirect on login functionality we see on many of these platforms, as well as the Same-Origin Policy SOP being relaxed around HTML tags, as we saw was sometimes exploited by Cross Site Request Forgery attacks.
Consider this lovely image tag.

As you can see, the image source (at least originally) doesn’t point to an image at all, but rather the Facebook login page. Thanks to SOP, we wouldn’t and shouldn’t be able to send an AJAX request to this website and see the response. But this HTML image tag is going to fire off a GET request for it’s source no problem. 
Thanks to redirect on login, if a user rocks up to the login page with the correct session cookies then we won’t have them login again, but rather we redirect them to their newsfeed; or, as it turns out, whatever the URL parameter next points to. What if we point it to an actual image, say the website icon, such that the HTML image tag loads if we are redirected, and fails if not.
Simple but effective. You can try it for yourself here, by opening my codepen in your browser when you’re signed in to Facebook, and when you’re signed out (or just use Incognito).

Okay, time for a demonstration. I took the liberty of writing my own web page that pulls all this data together, and rather than store it for a rainy day (like every other page on the web),  I present it to the user on a little web dashboard. It’s like a mirror for your browser. And who doesn’t like to check themselves out in the mirror from time to time 🙃
Random technical content: I had to fetch the geolocation data server-side to protect my API key from the client, then I sneak it back into the static HTML web page I’m serving to the user by setting it on the window variable in some inline script tags.
I bust out some React experience, and have something looking pretty (pretty scary I hope) in some nondescript amount of time (time knows no sink like frontend webdev). I rub my hands together grinning to myself, and send it off to some friends.
“Very scary”. I can see straight through the thin veil of their encouragement and instead read “Yeaaaah okay”. One of them admits that they actually missed the point when they first looked at it. But.. but... nevermind. It’s clearly not having the intended effect. These guys are pretty Internet savvy, but I feel like this should be disconcerting for even the most well seasoned web user... 
Like that moment you lock eyes with yourself in the mirror after forgetting to shave a few days in a row.

Some more random technical content: Programming this quite synchronous behaviour in the very async-centric JavaScript was quite a pain. It was particularly tricky to get around the fact that React renders it’s component hierarchy top down, so I needed the parent components to mount empty in order for them to be correctly populated with child components later. It was also a pain to access and render child components conditionally, especially if you want to have sets of child components in different files, as though they aren’t ultimately nested in the DOM, React will treat them as if they are.

Different Approaches for Creating a Staggered Animation
Animating elements, at its most basic, is fairly straightforward. Define the keyframes. Name the animation. Call it on an element.
But sometimes we need something a little more complex to get the right “feel" for the way things move. For example, a sound equalizer might use the same animation on each bar, but they are staggered to give the illusion of being animated independently.

I was recently building a dashboard and wanted the items in one of the widgets to flow into view with a staggered animation.
Just like the sound equalizer above, I started going down the :nth-child route. I used the unordered list (<ul>) as the parent container, gave it a class and employed the :nth-child pseudo selector to offset each list item with animaton-delay.

This technique does indeed stagger items well, particularly if you know how many items are going to be in the list at any given time. Where things fall apart, however, is when the number of items is unpredictable, which was the case for the widget I was building for the dashboard. I really didn’t want to come back to this piece of code every time the number of items in the list changed, so I knocked out a quick Sass loop that accounts for up to 50 items and increments the animation delay with each item:

That should do it! Yet, it feels way too hacky. Sure, it doesn’t add that much weight to the file, but you know the compiled CSS will include a bunch of unused selectors, like nth-child(45).
There must be a better way. This is where I would normally reach for JavaScript to find all of the items and add a delay but… this time I spent a little time exploring to see if there is a way to do it with CSS alone.
How about CSS counters?
The first thing I thought of was using a CSS counter in combination with the calc() function:

Unfortunately, that won’t work because the spec says counters cannot be used in calc()):
Components of a calc() expression can be literal values or attr() or calc() expressions.
Turns out a few people like this idea, but it hasn’t gone further than the draft stage.
How about a data attribute?
Having read that excerpt from the spec, I learned that calc() can use attr(). And, according to the CSS Values and Units specification):
In CSS3, the attr() expression can return many different types
This made me think; perhaps a data attribute could do the trick.

But my hopes were dashed as the browser support for this is diabolical!

The next idea I had was using CSS custom properties. It’s not pretty, but it worked 🙂

One of the great features of CSS is that it will ignore things it doesn’t understand, thanks to the cascade. That means everything will animate in into view together. If that’s not your bag, you can add a feature query to override a default animation:

Vanilla CSS FTW
The more I stop and ask myself whether I need JavaScript, the more I’m amazed what CSS can do on its own. Sure, it would be nice if CSS counters could be used in a calc() function and it would be a pretty elegant solution. But for now, inline custom properties provide both a powerful and flexible way to solve this problem.
