From humble storekeeper to millionaire: Athuman Salim's incredible SportPesa journey
Athuman Salim’s life took a dramatic turn when he was officially awarded over 26 million KSH from the SportPesa Midweek Jackpot on Monday, July 8, 2024. The Likoni storekeeper became one of the two lucky winners of the total KSH 53,736,269 jackpot, and he finally received his cheque after 18 days, allowing him time to fully grasp the enormity of his windfall.
Athuman’s triumphant journey began when he accurately predicted the outcomes of all 13 games in the midweek jackpot, earning him a staggering KSH 26,868,134. His remarkable achievement was celebrated with a VIP experience, complete with a limousine ride and police escort to the SportPesa offices.
During the official presentation ceremony, a jubilant Athuman expressed his profound gratitude to SportPesa for transforming his life. "I am overjoyed today as I collect my SportPesa Midweek Jackpot win, which has elevated me from just Athuman to millionaire Athuman," he declared.
A passionate supporter of Italian football, Athuman made a pivotal decision on the final match of his betslip. He set aside his usual allegiance to Italy and backed Spain, a choice that proved prophetic when an own goal by Italy's Riccardo Calafiori confirmed his jackpot victory.
“To be honest, I was incredibly nervous knowing I was one game away from winning the jackpot. I couldn’t eat before the Spain vs. Italy game in the Euros. Normally, I support Italy, but this time, I put my partisanship aside and backed Spain. When they won, I received four consecutive congratulatory messages from SportPesa. I think I let out the biggest scream of my life—I was so happy,” Athuman recounted.
Reflecting on his newfound fortune, Athuman emphasized the importance of careful planning. “I had plans before, but they did not account for such a huge amount. I need to seek solid advice to ensure I manage this money wisely. I am just thankful to SportPesa because I always believed my life would change one day because of the jackpot. This win will not only change my life but also the lives of my family and those who depend on me,” he shared.
Looking ahead, Athuman is determined to continue his winning streak and has set his sights on the SportPesa Mega Jackpot, which now stands at over 370 million KSH. “I will keep fighting and trying my luck,” he vowed.
Join SportPesa and play the jackpot today. If you are a fan, you can login today and keep on playing. You never know how your life can change forever.
Athuman Salim’s story is a testament to the life-changing potential of SportPesa jackpots, inspiring countless others to dream big and believe in the power of perseverance.

Midweek Advent Homily III: The Ninth and Tenth Commandments (12/14/22)
Primary Text | Matthew 14:3-4
------------------------------------------------
Dear People of God,
We have these last two of the Ten Commandments because it is one thing in an outward manner not to commit adultery or not to steal. God has given us these last two commandments because he wants to address what is going on not just what is on the outside, but also what is going on inside of us. That is to say, what is going on in our hearts. The heart must also be in a right condition for any of these commandments to actually be fulfilled. So God says, “You shall not covet.” Basically to covet means to be envious, or even simply to desire what others have. It means to have designs to take what rightfully belongs to our neighbor for ourselves. With the Ninth and Tenth Commandments we are also forbidden to desire what other people have, whether it be their property, their spouse, or whatever God has given them. These commandments are fraternal twins. The main difference between the ninth and the tenth is that the ninth forbids desiring our neighbor’s things and the tenth forbids desiring our neighbor’s relationships.
About a month ago, on November 8th, the prize-winning ticket for the world’s largest Powerball jackpot in history was sold in Altadena, California. $2.08 billion. In the days before the ticket was sold it was often asked, “What would you do if you won the Powerball?” Some say they would give it all to charity. Some say they would buy a brand-new house, a new car, a new everything. Others say they would use it to help pay off their student loans or help their family in some way. As high or low as our aspirations may be with that question, it seems more often than not money and possessions are not enough to satisfy our desires. Big lottery winners tend not to have things not turn out well for them. It ruins their relationships, they end up going broke, they admit they would rather have not won in the first place. (pause) Miserable covetousness has its grasp on us no matter what we already have. The lower-class desires what the middle class has, the middle-class desires what the relatively wealthy has, the relatively wealthy desires what the rich has. And so on and so on. Covetousness is a monster with an endless gullet. When it gets the first thing it wants it will then want yet even more.
Instead of running headlong into the whirlwind of keeping up with the Jones’, instead of harboring envy over what others have, instead of seeking to wrest away the possessions and relationships of others….may we be formed by these words of the Scriptures as found in 1 Timothy: “For we brought nothing into the world, so that we can take nothing out of it; but if we have food and clothing, we will be content with these” (1 Tim. 6:6-7). Coveting is ultimately not trusting God. It is finding our worth in what we have or in what we don’t have—rather than in God himself. Coveting also causes harm because it does not seek “to love others as you yourself would like to be loved.” These Ninth and Tenth commandments dig deep. Simply desiring what others have is enough to shatter these commandments like glass falling on cement. They show us just how upright we really are before God. As is the function of all the commandments, though they give us many things to do, they act like a mirror. Like we felt within us last week with the Eighth Commandment “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor” each of the Ten Commandments pierce right through us, the commandments call us out without mercy, they show us how far we actually are from fulfilling any of them. They reveal to us that we are sinners through and through. They drive us away from thinking we have any righteousness of our own. And then immediately, once we despair of our own ladder-climbing to God, are we made ready to receive the grace and mercy of the Christ. It is alone Christ’s perfect obedience, obedience unto death, that accomplishes our salvation. He alone has fulfilled all Ten Commandments in the outward and inward manner for our sake.
It is grace, and pure mercy that saves us, not our works. In our whole life as we have it now, we will continue to be sinners—we will be far from perfect, and we should never expect to reach perfection in this life; rather, it’s opposite. At the same time, you have this particular gift of God through faith. All your life you will be in possession of this divine thing named the forgiveness sin. For your God in Christ has graciously made his Advent to you, he has become of the same flesh and blood as you, and in that way he has arrived to you in his word and gives you himself completely, withholding nothing. In Christ, God has created in you a clean heart. In him you have forgiveness, joy, peace, salvation, gladness, worth, grace, life, hope, love, faith, and every heavenly blessing.

Watch the Premier League with Sky Sports
The Premier League 2019/20 season will provisionally restart on Wednesday, June 17 and Sky, the UK’s leading football broadcaster, will make 25 games available ‘free to air’ – including Everton vs Liverpool on the first full weekend back – for everyone in the UK to enjoy.
Sky Sports will show 64 live Premier League games when the season resumes. In addition to the 39 matches already scheduled to be broadcast exclusively live on Sky Sports before the coronavirus interruption, 25 more matches will be available on both Sky Sports Premier League and Sky’s free-to-air Pick channel, allowing the whole nation to be part of the return of live sport.
Free-to-watch highlights of every remaining Premier League game this season will be available from shortly after the full-time whistle on the Sky Sports website, Sky Sports App and Sky Sports Football YouTube channel.
To celebrate the return of the Premier League, Sky Sports will also launch a host of innovative new features and updates to give fans an even more immersive experience and share the moments live with family and friends on virtual platforms.
How good or bad is your team’s run-in?
Even if the restart does wipe out home advantage, the form of the 20 teams across the season to date still stands – with some facing sides with a far higher, or lower, average position than others.
For teams such as Newcastle in 13th, they may be looking on eagerly with five of the bottom six left to play. Less so perhaps for Crystal Palace, in 11th, who have every top-six side left to face, except Manchester City.
The title may be all but decided – so we’ll leave that out of the equation – but the race for the Champions League still looks like it would have plenty of twists and turns. So what do the run-ins say about the chances of the runners and riders?

Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund show best and worst sides ahead of Tuesday’s Klassiker – Bundesliga Hits and Misses | Football News
Follow live coverage of Borussia Dortmund vs Bayern Munich on skysports.com on Tuesday night; Kick-off at 5.30pm
Last Updated: 23/05/20 10:44pm
Bayern Munich restored their four-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga – but travel to second-placed Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday
Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund both showed their best and worst sides this weekend ahead of Tuesday night’s Klassiker.
Dortmund are more than just Haaland
Erling Haaland endured a rare blank for Borussia Dortmund
You’ll probably be surprised to hear that Erling Haaland had a quiet game against Wolfsburg. Yes, he made the runs and you could not fault his work rate, but for someone who has set the Bundesliga alight with 10 goals and three assists since January, he did not live up to his own billing on Saturday.
But this gave Dortmund the chance to prove they are more than just their 19-year-old superstar and other players were able to show what they can contribute.
Achraf Hakimi, Thorgan Hazard and Julian Brandt linked up superbly well, especially in the first half. It was the trio that strung a mesmerising series of passes together to help set up the first goal for Raphael Guerreiro, who also used his own skills and tricks to impress.
The trio linked up again just before the break when it appeared Dortmund would nab a quick second, but Hazard couldn’t quite get his finish right. He did come away with an assist for the first goal though, and enjoyed a good day’s work nonetheless. Real Madrid loanee Hakimi also deserved his goal – assisted by substitute Jadon Sancho – with a thunderous strike into the bottom corner.
Of course, it must be pointed out that Haaland was in and around both goals – uncharacteristically slipping over in the middle for the first and waiting on the left-hand side for the second after a brilliant supporting run – but it was his team-mates who shone at the Volkswagen Arena and proved that football really is a team sport. Charlotte Marsh
Bayern show lethal touch
Last weekend’s Bundesliga return saw Bayern Munich rack up their 50th goal of Hans Flick’s short tenure in just his 16th game at the helm. That was already the fastest that milestone has been reached under any head coach in Bundesliga history, and the league leaders continued their charge towards 100 goals with another five against Frankfurt on Saturday.
True, few backlines will be so generous to tee-up Alphonso Davies for an open goal, and even begin scoring for Bayern by the end of the 90 minutes. Realistically though, it could have been eight or nine for the relentless hosts, who now only need to score nine goals in their final seven games to better their tally from last season – and you’d bet your house they will.
Robert Lewandowski scored his 27th league goal of the season, making him the joint-top scorer across Europe’s top-five leagues
The fact five different scorers found their way onto the scoresheet too, albeit one of them Frankfurt defender Martin Hinteregger, will please Flick no end. His star striker Robert Lewandowski moved level with Ciro Immobile as the top scorer across Europe’s top-five leagues with his goal against Frankfurt, but having scorers across the pitch puts Bayern in an enviable position ahead of Tuesday’s Klassiker. Ron Walker
Dortmund must be better for Bayern
Despite what appeared a comfortable victory, Dortmund were not at their best at Wolfsburg
Dortmund face a much sterner test on Tuesday evening when they host league leaders Bayern – and they will need to put in a far better performance than the one against Wolfsburg.
Despite winning 2-0 against 10 men, it was anything but a cruising performance, particularly in the second half. For the first half an hour after the restart, Dortmund barely had a look in and were only saved by some poor Wolfsburg finishing and a sensational save from Roman Burki.
A lot of their problems came down to the substitution of Mats Hummels at half-time, possibly to keep him fresh for Bayern in midweek. Dortmund missed the experienced defender almost immediately as Renato Steffen blazed over from close range and their defence looked to be struggling without his leadership.
They soon steadied the ship and went on to win the game with another goal, but it’s no disrespect to say Bayern will give Dortmund many more problems than Wolfsburg did. Lucien Favre’s team need to put in their best performance and barely got out of third gear at the weekend. They will want to avoid another 4-0 Bundesliga thrashing if they have any realistic chance of beating Bayern to the title this season. Charlotte Marsh
…And Bayern must be better for Dortmund
Martin Hinteregger scored twice for Frankfurt against Bayern Munich
For about 85 minutes, Bayern were scintillating against Frankfurt. They did not let up, they did not take their foot off the gas. But for the five minutes they did, they were nearly embarrassed.
Hinteregger’s two goals in four minutes, both from dreadfully defended corners, threatened to derail Bayern’s return to a four-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga, and what will annoy Flick more than anything else is how eminently avoidable both were.
Bayern cannot afford similar lapses in concentration against a Dortmund side far superior to Frankfurt, who had already lost their previous four games before Saturday. But if anything, Flick and his side may now be better prepared having seen a weakness highlighted so starkly by Frankfurt’s towering centre-back. Ron Walker

Top 10 very unlucky football bets
Tumblr media
1. £1MILLION from a £10 bet if Bolton had beaten Liverpool and they even turned down a £15,000 cash out option! A punter placed a £10 bet on five results that would have won £1million Four came in, including Manchester City losing to Middlesbrough Saturday’s late kick-off between Liverpool and Bolton saw him lose the bet But they still got rewarded with four free bets and an FA Cup final invite For one unfortunate gambler, Saturday’s extraordinary round of FA Cup results will be remembered for all the wrong reasons. The punter had placed a £10 accumulator bet with a bookmaker on five games, with the odds stacked so heavily against them they would have taken £1million had it been successful, all of us at football betting tips wanted him to win it. The odds of all five results occurring were so high, the gambler was given odds of a 1,000,000/1. Here is how close he came: BET: Crystal Palace to beat Southampton RESULT: Crystal Palace 3-2 WIN BET: Middlesbrough to beat Manchester City RESULT: Middlesbrough 2-0 WIN BET: Leicester City to beat Tottenham RESULT: Leicester 2-1 WIN BET: Reading to beat Cardiff City RESULT: Reading 2-1 WIN BET: Bolton to beat Liverpool, both sides to score RESULT: 0-0 LOSS Four out of five results had, unbelievably come in the only game remaining was Saturday’s late kick-off at Anfield where Liverpool faced championship side Bolton. A victory for Neil Lennon’s team, with both sides hitting the back of the net, was all that was required for the most astounding of bets to have landed. And the customer clearly felt their luck was in, as they rejected a £15,000 offer to cash-out before proceedings began at Anfield. Agonisingly, there was not enough magic left in the cup for Bolton to emerge victorious. The game finished 0-0, with the unfortunate gambler left stunned at would could have been won. The bookmakers, meanwhile, breathed an almighty sigh of relief. Simply subscribe and checkout our soccer bet prediction today, and start earning a 2nd income from our football bets tips today. The final game on his slip was Leeds vs Tottenham, which he predicted to end as a 3-1 victory for Leeds. While Leeds taking the win came as a surprise, they struggled to find the final goal which would have confirmed the £506,000 windfall. They would find the back of the net for a third time, as Tottenham willed their players, including goalkeeper Brad Friedel, forward for a corner in the dying seconds of the game. The ball fell to Rodolph Austin, who took a shot at the empty net from a distance. It went in, but Friend had blown the whistle just one second earlier, costing the mystery punter a lot of money. We consider ourselves to be the very best when it comes to football score predictions match tipster, and providing our current members with the best betting football predictions today. Once you have subscribed you will instantly have access to all of the best football betting tips for today, such as our over 2.5 today predictions and of course our carefully selected soccer bankers for the weekend which also include the very best over 3.5 goals tips, along with all of our today football bankers. 3. £187,000 lost by one goal Factory worker Kevin Wint, 31, must’ve felt like the luckiest man in the world when 14 of the 15 results on his £1 accumulator came in, leaving him just 90 minutes away from a £187,000 jackpot. The final game to be played would see Swansea visit Manchester United in the FA Cup, with Wint needing a draw to emerge victorious. Considering The Swans hadn’t claimed a victory at Old Trafford in 82 years, the odds appeared to be in his favour. With the game tied at 1-1 approaching the final whistle, the money was almost in his bank account. Tottenham claimed a 3-1 victory over Reading on the Sunday, Everton vs Newcastle ended as a 2-2 draw on the Monday, which left the hopeful punter sweating for 24 hours until Arsenal kicked off their European campaign. The early stages of the game were extremely open, with Montpellier’s Younes Belhanda opening the scoring after just nine minutes, before Lukas Podolski and Gervinho scored two quick-fire goals to put Arsenal ahead. At 2-1 after just 18 minutes, the game looked in danger of finishing at a much higher score than 3-1. Juventus had beaten Celtic, Bayern Munich had beaten Arsenal, Borussia Dortmund drew with Shakhtar Donetsk, Real Madrid drew with Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain beat Valencia and Porto emerged victorious against Malaga – six results which Pike correctly predicted. The first was AC Milan celebrate their 2-0 victory over Barcelona in the Champions League Round of 16. With Galatasaray vs Schalke 04 eventually finishing with a draw to make his correct predictions 7 out of 8. However, he still needed Barcelona to triumph by 2 goals to nil. We all knew that whoever took over would struggle to fill Ferguson’s boots, given that he was arguable the most successful manager of all time, but few predicted that he would be quite so terrible. How was an unfortunate pensioner from Wales to know that Moyes would oversee the Red Devils’ worst ever Premier League campaign? Having bet £1 on 15 of the games to be played on the third week of the 2013/14 Premier League campaign, the unknown better was set to scoop a massive £1 million if all 15 results came in. 14 did, and with United having picked up four points in their first two games, they appeared capable of toppling Liverpool at Anfield to produce the biggest accumulator payout of all time. However, with Moyes struggling to spur United on, the club fell to a costly 1-0 defeat. Thankfully, the punter still picked up £72,000 for his 14 correct predictions, but it was chump change compared to what he could have won. 7. £1,000,000 lost by wrong betting slip Practice makes perfect they always say, but a lack of experience cost 19-year-old Jordan Donnellan an astonishing amount of money. The teenage barman had spent Sunday evening partying with his friends and family in the pub after Juventus beat Catania to see all 14 of his predictions come in on a 14-team accumulator, landing him what he believed to be a life-changing £1 million. However, upon entering his local Ladbrokes store on Monday morning to collect his winnings, Mr Donnellan was informed that he had actually won £0. Absolutely nothing. The youngster had predicted all 14 scores correctly. However, he had filled in the Weekend Result Rush coupon, which requires both teams to score in each match, rather than a Weekend Quickslip, therefore voiding his win. Ladbrokes spokesman David Williams likened the incident to your lottery numbers coming up in a different country, stating: “It’s rather like buying a UK lottery ticket then spotting that your numbers have come up on the Australian lotto.” 8. £17,000 lost by a computer error The worst part about Dougie Watson’s accumulator loss is that it wasn’t entirely his own fault, the 40-year-old better should have used a betting exchange however he had gone into a William Hill store to place a 13-hold accumulator on a number of matches set to kick off at 1:30pm. However, when the cashier put the bet into the system, Mr Watson was informed that he would be unable to bet on West Bromwich Albion’s Premier League clash with Newcastle, as the match had already kicked off three seconds earlier. According to the cashier, the game would be scratched off of the betting slip and the rest of his bets would go through as normal. Match after match came in in his favour, winning Mr Watson a cool £17,000. However, upon checking his slip he noticed that the West Brom vs Newcastle game hadn’t been removed from the slip, and with the result going against him the accumulator was lost. Despite arguing with the shop’s manager to try and save his unfortunate loss, the high street chain refused to accept their error, insisting that the machine hadn’t malfunctioned. “He asked for a copy of the betting slip to be emailed to him by the shop,” Watson said. “It clearly states the time is 13:30:03, but he quickly said he wasn’t paying out because the machine was correct to accept the bet.” 9. £2,499.55 lost on early cash-out If you think Gary Walter’s early cash-out was unfortunate, this anonymous punter’s cash-out was extremely premature. The mystery better had placed 50p on Leicester City at the start of the season, with odds on the lowly club winning the Premier League title at 5,000/1. Few thought Leicester City would survive in the top flight after narrowly avoiding relegation in the 2014/15 season. However, they started life under Claudio Ranieri well with a 4-2 victory over Sunderland. Unconvinced, the better decided to cash-out for just 95p, securing himself a profit of just 45p. The Foxes would embark on the most unbelievable Premier League campaign in history, as Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez fired the club to glory – a victory that would have won the him a far more impressive £2,500. Accumulators can win you huge amounts of money, but more times than not you the bookies will be the winners. Football trading is a much safer option if you want to make some serious profits betting on the football. 10. £49,000 lost by toddler Everyone knows that smartphone and children are a bad mix. If they aren’t blowing thousands of pounds on virtual currencies, they’re cashing out your accumulator bets prematurely, losing you a lot of money in the process, Gary Walter’s 3-year-old son cashed-out his potential £50,000 accumulator. Gary Walter, a 24-year-old father of two from Birmingham, was silly enough to leave his phone on the back-seat of the car next to his 3-year-old toddler, Archie. Earlier that day Mr Walter had placed a 13-team accumulator which was set to win him almost £50,000 if all of his predictions proved to be correct. With three correct scores already in and a cash-out value of just £7, Archie, unsurprisingly, picked up the phone and pressed the biggest, brightest button that he could see – cash-out. With ten games still to play, the accident didn’t seem quite so bad, but as results continued to go his way, or, at this point, against him, Mr Walter realised that he had missed out on a whopping£48,993. Messi can play until he’s 45, claims Barcelona president Josep Bartomeu
After asking the president of Barcelona Barcelona if the newly-renovated Camp Nou will have a Lionel Messi statue, the answer that comes back encapsulates the mood around the club after the midweek win over Liverpool.
"No, it will have 10!" Says Josep Bartomeu laughing. "We've got one of Ladislao Kubala. We're working on one or Johan Cruyff. And the day that Messi retires – well, I won't be president because he'll outlast me. He has so much football still to give. ”
No one at the club wants to contemplate Messi's retirement and even more so as Barca's president sits down with The Mail on Sunday 24 hours after the Argentine's dismantling of Liverpool.
Lionel Messi is mobbed by his teammates after a stunning individual display against Liverpool
Josep Bartomeu believes the talisman who destroyed the Reds has more to give for the club
"I still think it's a long way off," says Bartomeu. "He’s only 31. Look at the power in that free kick. He's a long way out and that ball really flies. He's stronger than ever. "
Barcelona are due to start rebuilding the Camp Well in the summer of 2020.
" That will be flattened, "says Bartomeu as he looks out of his office window at the clubs Mini Estadi across the road.
It has hosted Barcelona B team matches since 1982. It will be replaced by a new arena for the clubs basketball, handball, roller hockey and indoor football teams. In total, the renovation work could end up totaling £ 510million.
Everything should be finished by 2023. That sounds like the perfect distraction for fans trying not to think about Messi's retirement – he'll be 35.
"Well that's you saying that, not me," Bartomeu says still beaming. "I hope Leo plays on until he's 45! I don't know what he wants to do but it would be fantastic to have him in the team when we inaugurate the new stadium. "
(LR) Naby Keita, Fabinho, James Milner and Virgil van Dijk try to shackle the Argentina star
Messi waves to the Nou Camp crowd after scoring his second goa l against the Reds
He knows he's hit the jackpot presiding over the club in the era of its greatest ever player.
'Presidents from other teams, when they come to the Camp Well the first thing they say is, "Is Messi going to play today?" They support their teams but they love football and want to see him, "he says.
There will have been disappointment in the Celta Vigo directors' box on Saturday night with Messi rested ahead of Tuesday's second leg at Anfield.
His two goals against Liverpool leave him 90 minutes from his fourth Champions League final in 10 years. He has lit up the competition that most football is the greatest in the game.
Bartomeu says he's a Champions League fan. "It's" la leche! "," He says, using that strange Spanish idiom that translates literally as "It's the milk!" But means something like "It's the business!"
But he sits on the executive board of the European Clubs Association, playing a part in talks to shape the next wave of changes that will take effect in 2024. So why change the Champions League when it is such a spectacular success?
Messi has led Barcelona to La Liga title and they look set to reach the Champions League final
"Because we are going to change it for the better," comes the reply. "Nothing is perfect. The process of improving something never stops. "
Will this mean a closed European Super League with permanent members on historical name, not merit, and matches played at weekends? Bartomeu allays some of those fears, others less so.
"Barcelona has already said openly that we are against matches being played at weekends," he says. "We have a very strong league and we enjoy playing in it."
On the subject of a meritocracy there are mixed messages.
"We should remember that Barcelona's basketball team is in the Euroleague because we have a permanent position in it by contract. We did this in basketball many years ago. But right now it's not on the table to make a closed Champions League. Until 2024 it will continue to be the same. "
And if that sounds like the change is coming, he adds:" Barcelona does not support a Super League and UEFA know that. "
"I still think (retirement) is a long way off … look at the power in that free kick," says Bartomeu
He says what supporters because more European fixtures are. "It was 11 years since we played against Manchester United in the Camp Nou. With Liverpool we haven't played them since 2006. That shouldn't be normal. "
Quite the more games can be fitted in without the Champions League and domestic calendars don't seem to be up for explanation just yet.
'I'm not going to get into details because it's not down to me to do that but it will be a lot more attractive to fans from 2024. You will like it.' But what if we don't? This season's tournament does seem to have topped most before it, in terms of excitement. And is there another twist coming this week in the second leg at Anfield?
"There's no euphoria here," says the Barcelona president. "When we scored the second goal we weren't playing our best football and we were under huge pressure from Liverpool."
Messi's intervention changed everything, as it so often has over the last decade. As he prepares for another semi-final in England, it is worth recalling the times he was linked with a move here.
Bartomeu sat down to discuss all things Barcelona with Sportsmail's PETE JENSON
" No, no, it has not been hard, "says Bartomeu convincingly when asked if it has been difficult to keep him.
" What matters is that we have been able to have good players and coaches with the same very clearly defined philosophy.
'Whoever is the coach, it's the same way of playing so Messi feels very comfortable here. Why would he change it for another club with a different concept of football, why would he go elsewhere? "
That suggests no matter how much Manchester City or Paris Saint-Germain offered, Messi would never have left. Does Bartomeu still fear the threat of football's nation-state funded clubs? "It's not a threat, it's a reality," he says. "They have unlimited resources."
After losing Neymar to PSG in 2018 does Uefa's Financial Fair Play enforcement still have faith?
When PSG signed Neymar they wrecked Barcelona's plan for him to be the post-Messi project
" The regulation works, I imagine, he says cryptically. "The other day I saw that PSG had some issue and because of an irregularity in the manner (or bringing the complaint against them), it didn't succeed.
" But I have a lot of faith in UEFA and in the football authorities. There are English clubs who have the feeling that City don't act the way they should but I have ghosts to them about this and they say the same – if the Premier League and the Champions League don't find anything, then we have no reason to be worried. "
When PSG signed Neymar they wrecked Barcelona's plan for the Brazilian to be the ultimate post-Messi project.
" He had the chance to be the No 1 when Messi went, "says Bartomeu. "It never worked out that way and we got a lot of money and we invested in two players, Philippe Coutinho and Ousmane Dembele."
Neymar moved to escape Messi's shadow and win the Balon d’Or. As things stand, that prize is shaping up to be Messi's once more.
"This year I wouldn't give him the Balon d 'Or," jokes Bartomeu. "He's beyond that now. He’s in a category of his own. For years now he's just been competing against himself. There are other great players but they are in another dimension. "

PLAY wherever you like, fellas. Can’t get White Hart Lane built for the big kick-off? Play at Wembley. White Hart Lane is still not ready for Spurs – leading to all sorts of complicationsCan’t play at Wembley for a cup game? Stadium MK will host you. MK a bit busy for the next round? Choose somewhere else. Tottenham, given permission by the Football League to play their Carabao Cup third-round tie with Watford at Stadium MK, will not even be in their own parish on September 26. To be allowed out of the boundaries of London is a dangerous precedent for a competition fighting to stay relevant. This is not Brazil, where clubs routinely mix and match by playing in different stadiums depending on the quality of the opposition and the level of interest in the competition. The next ridiculous twist could see Spurs playing at MK Dons in the Carabao Cup News Group Newspapers Ltd Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino could have more than two “home” venuesTottenham are messing with the heritage and the culture of the sport in this country, desperately trying to find solutions because they misjudged progress on their new stadium. This is not what Premier League chief exec Richard Scudamore envisaged when he announced, in July 2015, “that you can’t have ten at Milton Keynes and nine at Wembley”. Now you can. Decisions like this mean there is nothing stopping Manchester United, for example, announcing “essential midweek maintenance work” at Old Trafford and taking their brand on the road for a Carabao Cup tie in future. Dele Alli’s long list of superstitions from bracelet’s to eight-minute ice baths A third-round clash at home to Frank Lampard’s Derby, as they are this year, would be a convenient moment for United to play in front of their fanbase in another part of the country. ‘United on the Road — Coming to a Ground Near You’, just as they did when they were once forced to play a Cup Winners’ Cup tie against St Etienne at Plymouth’s Home Park in 1977 because of crowd disturbances. The south west would love to see them back there for a one-off game. And the money men would love it, showcasing some of their stars to a paying public and reinforcing those red shirts to people who would ordinarily never get to watch United’s first team. With Old Trafford unlikely to be anywhere near full for the visit of a Championship club, selling-out someone else’s stadium for a night under the floodlights would be a decent marketing tool. Even so, it is not in the spirit of the competition. The fans, as usual, have been overlooked in the Football League’s desperation to keep one of their high-profile Premier League clubs sweet. They are powerless, terrified of the top Premier League clubs easing their congested fixture lists by pulling out of this competition. Alamy Live News The long-awaited move for Tottenham to the White Hart Lane stadium is on holdThere is no real money in it for them — only the prestige of lifting the season’s first trophy. Winning £100,000 for the Carabao Cup does not compare with £2million for the FA Cup, £150m for the Premier League or the £100m jackpot for Champions League success. By caving in, by giving Spurs special dispensation to play this third-round tie 51 miles up the road at a “neutral venue”, Spurs fans have come off worst again. They are being shunted here, there and everywhere as these players — assuming White Hart Lane opens its doors before the end of the season — prepare to play at a third venue. The Football League board — comprising departing chairman Ian Lenegan, Shaun Harvey, Debbie Jevans CBE, Ian Watmore, Cliff Crown, Mark Ashton, Nigel Howe, Stefan Gamble, Jim Rodwell, John Nixon — folded at their monthly meeting yesterday. Even though history will claim this third-round tie was played on neutral turf, Spurs will be in control of everything in the build-up. AFP or licensors Tottenham superstars Harry Kane and Dele Alli are away on England duty while the saga over their club’s ground drifts onThey will sell tickets, kickstart marketing campaigns in an attempt to fill the 30,500-capacity stadium and pay all the other costs of putting on a game — just like they would at home. They have been kicked out of Wembley, told to find another venue for the night because the grass at the stadium needs a rest after some NFL action and an Anthony Joshua fight on September 22. Three days later, it would be good for the sport if Watford dealt another knockout blow. Awkward moment Spurs keeper Michel Vorm hits goal kick out for a CORNER against WatfordFORST PRIZE FRASER FORSTER was an England keeper when Southampton gave him a new five-year contract last summer. Saints’ £95,000-a-week keeper is one of the best-paid No 1s in the world, in a tier below the obvious examples of Gianluigi Buffon, Manuel Neuer and David De Gea. Even so, he cannot even make the substitutes’ bench at St Mary’s after losing his place to Alex McCarthy and falling to third choice behind Angus Gunn. PA:Press Association Fraser Forster has dropped down to third choice at Southampton despite big wagesForster, 30, was dropped by Mauricio Pellegrino last season after conceding five against Tottenham and has not played first-team football since Boxing Day. He has picked up £3million in wages since, rejecting a loan move to Turkey and vowing to fight for his place. Even if he doesn’t win it back, Forster’s future has already been taken care of. Ex-Southampton star Dani Osvaldo performs with band Barrio Viejo in Barcelona ULTRAS’ BOYCOTT GROUNDS EAGLES THE ultras at Crystal Palace generated a vibrant, raucous and intimidating atmosphere — before they went through with their threat to boycott games at Selhurst Park. They were part of fan culture, admired worldwide for their passionate and boisterous support. But they fell out with the Eagles after being told they could not move into a central area behind one of the goals. Crystal Palace 0-2 Southampton: Saints pick up first win of the season as Palace miss injured Wilfried ZahaPalace are reluctant to move long-standing season-ticket holders — some have been occupying those seats for 30 years — from their favourite spot. Unless a resolution is found, that famous Palace atmosphere will fade away. FIGHTLESS IT is a dangerous era for England when players are able to pick and choose their availability. Although Jamie Vardy and Gary Cahill have not officially turned their back on England, they do not fancy being a spare part in Gareth Southgate’s squad. PA:Empics Sport Elite aces like Jamie Vardy must fight harder to win a regular place with EnglandThey gave decent service but you cannot look back on their Three Lions careers and think the pair were particularly distinguished servants. Vardy, 31, earned 26 caps while Cahill, 32, made 62 appearances for his country under five head coaches. The challenge for elite footballers, especially when the competitive juices are flowing, is to push so hard for a place and to perform so well that the manager has no choice but to pick you. Sadly for the English game, they did not have the fight for it. Two Door Cinema Club @ LGOS (2/2/17)
January 2013, a young Helen Rabbitt ventures to Manchester Apollo to see Two Door Cinema Club’s Beacon brought to life. Not so much to plan when British attitude to snow strikes and half the set is a distant fantasy. Four years later, and it was in my utmost determination to scoop up the jackpot of the Gameshow taking place in Mountford Hall. The Irish indie band created an unforgettable atmosphere on Tuesday night, that similar to an overflowing festival stage. Trimble, Halliday and Baird were making sure to bring the essence of summer to a forlorn February crowd. Venue filled from front to back, top to bottom it was time to get this fortune wheel spinning.
Undoubtedly the nostalgia was thrown at full force when the anthems of Tourist History provided the opening to this mesmorising set. Undercover Martyn followed by the catchy Do You Want It All? had fans in positively heart pounding hysteria. It was made quite clear that this band know how to sweeten the crowd up before enrolling into the delicacy of the newly released third studio album, Gameshow. Lyrics are commonly known to be the universal speakers of the heart and soul but the relation of ‘Save me, I’ve been drinking wine’ to my weekly consumption is not something I ever imagined to be developed into a crowd pleasing, shoulder bopping single. Two Door Cinema Club did just that and the live performance only emphasised its greatness.
Success has not eroded the minds of this band but has instead made them even more grateful of their fans and exemplifies their love for the music. That being said, success has clearly brought them a fortunate input for stage production…let’s just say the lights are alright on the night. Backdrops projecting colourful animations made this night an extravaganza. The colours highlighted the enthusiastic performance from the band, fully confirmed in the illuminating performance of I Can Talk. Without a question, this fan favourite was going to be welcomed with open arms but the crowd’s energy was kinetic in bouncing from front to back.
(Questionable) pints thrown and jackets thrown high in the air, it was necessary to remind yourself that you were at a midweek gig and not in a festival frenzy. The crowd made this night their own and Two Door Cinema Club used this atmospheric craze as a catalyst for the encore. Typical WE WANT MORE echoed through the hall and before there was chance to exhale a breath the lads were back on stage with winning force.
The encore was a blessing to the Beacon and Tourist History Days with Someday bringing the beacon of hope back for 2013 Rabbitt. Finally, the pulses were racing and the voices were roaring, the distinguishable What You Know instrumentals kicked in and the crowd thrived into euphoria. The electrifying favourite was the cherry on top for both the Liverpool crowd and Two Door Cinema Club, stunned was an understatement. The band acknowledged the ‘tropical’ conditions, the sweat was dripping from the walls and fans had to purchase merchandise to contemplate any sense of the definition of fresh. If that’s not a sign of an unforgettable night then I don’t know what is!
