I love when Chapel is like, McCoy's confidant, taking care of his love life, just as McCoy must have counselled her a million times about her feelings for Spock (yeah, these are movie-era Kirk and McCoy, and they totally act like a married couple throughout the novel).
This McCoy-Chapel mutual understanding is something that was never quite addressed in the series, but it was right there in the Writers Guide as the intention behind.

Hello! I got a whole shelf of old Star Trek novels from a yard sale and I'm deciding which to read first. Unfortunately none of them are D. Duane. Can you tell me what other Trek novels/authors you've enjoyed?
At the moment, I have far more trek books than I've actually read, partially because I have no self-control when it comes to acquiring them, partially because, when I started to mine them for blog content, reading them started to feel like homework (I thought I put marking pages with tabs behind me after grad school). This is also tough because Diane Duane's novels tend to be far and away my favourites (Spock's World, Doctor's Orders, and The Wounded Sky are all brilliant), but you already knew that! They're also a large chunk of what I've read. I've also read a bunch of Blish novelizations and some of the movie novelizations, which are fun but don't quite count in the same way, since they are retelling known stories.
However, there are a few I can recommend. I really enjoyed A Contest of Principles by Greg Cox, which feels like a real extended TOS episode; our main trio all have plenty to do, and the relationships are very fond and very true to the series. Shell Game by Melissa Crandall also has the character relationships I'm looking for. (Actually, both of these at one point pair Spock and Bones together while Kirk angsts from the sidelines while doing his own part of the mission, which is apparently a fruitful scenario).
J.M. Dillard also knows the characters really well. I enjoyed The Lost Years a lot, though it must be said that it is basically the crew breakup novel because it bridges from the show into TMP, so you'll just have to rewatch the movies after to remember that it all turns out all right in the end.
Jean Lorrah's The Vulcan Academy Murders is fun as long as you don't go in expecting a mystery you can't solve in 30 seconds and just want to appreciate the characters and learn more about Sarek and Amanda.
Brad Ferguson's Crisis on Centaurus is worth it for the backstory look into Jim and Bones' first meeting, as well as giving us some time with Joanna McCoy.
I can't actually fully recommend Carmen Carter's Dreams of the Raven, which has a very strange and queasily unethical romance subplot that doesn't land for several reasons and an unsatisfying ending, but it's an interesting look into McCoy with amnesia (and it did let me coin the term "Character Fondness Power Differential" while writing the review).
This ask did, however, remind me that I need to start making a dent in my book collection before buying more (I store them where I can't see them, so I'm constantly surprised by how many I actually have). I think I'm reading Howard Weinstein's The Covenant of the Crown next.
If you search my "trek books" tag, you'll see more!

“Spock,” McCoy said slowly, “Kailyn’s in love with me.” The Vulcan raised an eyebrow. “Indeed?” “Don’t act so surprised. I happen to be quite lovable.” “I have never doubted that, Doctor,” Spock replied wryly.

Family, please don't get wrapped up in the Claudine Gay nonsense. She has No Connection 2 The Black Community; she is a Black Elitist that tried 2 move like the Folks she lived, played, & prayed w/. Claudine Gay wasn't released from Harvard bcuz she's a 'Black Woman'; she was released bcuz she's a confirmed plagiarist. Her mediocrity smacks in the face of those of Us who were taught: "U gotta B TWICE as good 2 get half the Credit"... Black American Women who did Real Work & Paid their Dues, will likely suffer from her selfishness.
No one can point 2 anything Claudine Gay has done 4 Blackfolk in Harvard, Cambridge, or the local Boston Area; she did plagiarize another Black Woman's work, & didn't stand up 4 the 2 Black Harvard Deans that were released 4 being on Harvey Weinstein's Defense Team a few years back. I dunno what Howard Univ. wants w/ a 'confirmed plagiarist' & failed Administrator; maybe they should look 4 a Black American Woman w/ Real Qualifications & a commitment to Integrity.

Kevin Sorbo - Hercules the Legendary Journeys, Never Cry Werewolf
Amber Heard - Aquaman, The Stepfather, Justice League

Armie Hammer - Mirror Mirror, The Lone Ranger, Death on the Nile, Mine, On the Basis of Sex, Cars 3

Am I wrong for liking these things knowing the people involved are scum at best and monsters at worst?

In the movie Father of the Bride Part II, Martin Short’s wedding coordinator character Franck Eggelhoffer encounters George and Nina Banks (played by Steve Martin and Diane Keaton) outside their pediatrician’s office. Delighted to learn that both the Banks and their daughter are having a baby, the colorful Eggelhoffer offers to plan the shower.
“No more parties!” replies an exasperated Steve Martin, who was comically and financially challenged by Franck in the first film. “Not this time. No way. N. O.”
“Every party has a pooper, that why we invited you!” Eggelhoffer and his side kick, Howard Weinstein, begin to sing. “Party pooper! Party pooper! Every party has a pooper, that’s why we invited you, George Baaanks!”
This scene comes to mind as we kick off the summer of 2024, and as such publications as The New York Times leverage a current heat wave to try and advance their belief that a man-induced climate crisis is threatening our very existence. They’re the party poopers Franck is warning us about...

"Captain's Log, supplemental: Is it gay to dress and undress my CMO whenever I see fit?"
Reading these comics is an interesting experience, since they ran for a whole decade, and the writers changed throughout the years. Under Peter David, the slashy parts were mostly spones. But ever since Howard Weinstein's arrival, is all mckirk. Not a problem for me, since I like all the combinations...

The themes of the episode have been seen many times throughout the series. It reminds me of the episodes Friday’s Child, A Private Little War, and Elaan of Troyius. All three of those episodes and this book have the Klingons trying to destabilize a local planet or region of space so that they can exploit everything when it falls apart. In all these stories either Kirk or McCoy has a connection to the ruling families, and one of the women in said family falls for one of the two men. That itself isn’t a bad thing if formula works, I don’t blame them if they want to use it again. In addition, the details in each of these stories are different enough to keep them interesting.

"Jim, you are one nosy sonofabitch," Dr. McCoy growled, glaring up at Kirk from his cabin lounge chair. "Thanks. I try." "That was not a compliment!" "I don't care," Kirk said pleasantly, helping himself to a drink and sitting in a facing chair. "What I do care about is you. If you're going to hide things from me, how the devil am I going to help you deal with this?" "I didn't notice I was asking for help." "Well, fortunately, I did." (from The Better Man by Howard Weinstein)
