can i ask why you like pansy? (no hate!!)
okay.
it’s actually pretty complicated - i don’t think i used to like her when i read the books. i hated her - but part of me pitied her. i can’t help that. i think, for me, canon pansy is very different than fanon pansy because her character in the books is so shallow. but...
by no means do i defend her actions in the books.
i’ve gotten asks like this before, and i really want to make that clear. canon pansy is genuinely awful. we see her from the age of 11 to 17 be a horrific human being and i’m not condoning her behavior in that time period.
however, it’s really important to remember that we don’t see her after the war. so to simply paint her as “evil” would be reductive - even before draco was granted a canon redemption arc, we viewed him as a flawed, complex human being, and i feel like we have a duty to do that for pansy as well.
but what interests me even more about her is, honestly (and this is going to sound so goddamn cliché), is the impact of pureblood societal pressures during wartime. because we saw what that did to draco, but, as with most societies, pressures on female figures are so nuanced and profound.
take narcissa as an example. she grew up in a very similar time period to pansy, under very similar pressures, and we actively ignore how terrible she probably was as a teenager in lieu of how fantastic of a person she became.
i like pansy because, at the end of the books, her reality has been shattered and her identity torn apart - and she needs to find who she is all over again. i think we all like the idea that we could make up for our past regrets, and she’s very symbolic of that.
