As students and learners it is incredibly easy to become trapped in our previous habits of complacence (something that often plagues me personally in the form of extreme procrastination and a lack of study schedule) as a lack of consequence leads us by the hand and gives us a false sense of security that is only ripped away when we are faced with a change of routine. In this sense, Year 11 & 12 is an earthquake manifest. They shake the structures that previously housed your education until they come tumbling down upon you - and then you must rebuild.

However, In my opinion this is not to be perceived as a loss but a moment of great opportunity. After losing this sense of stability you must apply your newfound knowledge of what may happen in order to strengthen your habits.

Read.

Reading is the single most important practice in strengthening your vocabulary and writing (and even if you take mostly science subjects, nothing will take you further in life than a high level of literacy). Read widely every day. Articles, Novels, Essays - whatever you like. Study by reading. It doesn't have to be hard, throughout my senior years of high school I probably did a total of 6 practice papers (though I do not promote this course of action) and ended up doing (more than) fine on all my exams and assignments because instead I would spend my time reading up on the topics that had been discussed in class (I highly recommend when you inevitably do Shakespeare, read some of the criticisms by Harold Bloom). Listen to podcasts before your exam. Pre-Finals I would sunbathe on my back porch while listening to relevant podcasts on Spotify, by god it helps.

Spend Time away from your work.

Play cards at lunch, talk about menial things during lulls in class-time, go to parties in fields. Honestly, the best thing about the senior years is spending time with your peers- don't loose that because you are too worried about your rankings. This certificate is a cruel beast that will bite and scratch at you if you let it. Do not let it. Get a good amount of rest, you are a teenager so that means that it is your god given right to nap like nothing else.

And above all, don't stress. I know it is easier said than done (many a time I was found crying over maths on my kitchen floor) but it is seriously a blip in your life. You will adapt, you will learn, and you will do well. This will set you up if you want to pursue tertiary education, chiefly because it is a learning experience. If you have never felt crippled over an essay before entering university it will cripple you later. let it happen now and then move on.

A patient died this week while waiting for treatment in the crowded emergency department waiting room at Manitoba's largest hospital. Nurses say they are so overwhelmed that they simply can't keep an eye on everyone all the time.

"We are investigating a potential critical incident that occurred during a one-hour window on Feb. 27 in the [Health Sciences Centre] emergency department," a Shared Health spokesperson told CBC News in an email Wednesday.

Privacy legislation prevents the health agency from speaking about the specifics of the patient's case, the spokesperson said.

The HSC emergency department is routinely filled with patients waiting for a bed in one of the hospital units, she said.

"So what happens is those patients come in, they're ill, they need to be admitted, and there's no place to put them. So they end up languishing in the emergency department, which then of course backlogs the waiting room," Jackson said.

Nurses try to move the sickest patients closer, where they can keep an eye on them. They also shuffle more stable patients to other areas, but it's not always possible, Jackson said.

Nurses are doing as much as they can, as fast as they can, to monitor and keep patients safe. However, at times the HSC emergency is incredibly chaotic and there's just not enough staff, Jackson said. Some patients have sat for 12-15 hours, she said.

"It's very difficult to be able to manage your admitted patients [lined up in hallways] as well as retrieving and monitoring 50-odd patients in the waiting room," she said.

During the question at the Manitoba Legislature on Wednesday, Premier Heather Stefanson offered condolences to the family of the patient who died. She later told reporters her government is working to address staffing challenges in health care.

Manitoba Health Minister Audrey Gordon was asked about the death during a Wednesday news conference. She would not talk about it, citing privacy legislation even though no personal information was being requested.

She said she looked forward to receiving the results of an investigation into the incident and urged Manitobans not to be worried about travelling to emergency departments.

Gordon thanked nurses for their work "during a very difficult time in our province's history" and said the province is working to make their jobs easier and add more health professionals to the system.

When pressed more on the issue, Gordon left the podium and ended the news conference.

When people are overworked and feel disrespected, they are more inclined to leave the profession, leading to more shortfalls, Lamont said.

"They've had to work for years and years without any support, they don't get breaks, they're forced to do mandatory overtime and when they become managers … [if they raise any concerns] they get fired because they're not part of the union anymore," Lamont said.

Lamont said the Progressive Conservative government's healthcare focus has been on saving money rather than patient care or civility for those working in the system. This has led to emergency wards becoming holding rooms.

"The terrifying thing about being stuck in a corridor is that there are no bells," Lamont said. "If there is no one else to call for help for you, you will get no help. That's a terrifying prospect.
