I like Hiccstrid...but I have issues

So I watched How to Train Your Dragon about a month ago and I absolutely loved it! So much so that before I took the time to watch the other two movies, I basically know the plots for the remaining movies from all the fanfiction, Youtube videos and Tumblr posts I have read about it lol. I know I have issues when it comes to consuming media properly :). I still intend to watch the movies...I hope.

Anyway, I liked Astrid's character in HTTYD 1. She was a fully fleshed-out character and besides her opening scene, she never felt like a love interest character for the majority of the movie. She was the perfect Viking, everything Hiccup was not. She was pretty (because what love interest is not pretty **roll my eyes**) but she was angry and violent. She was perfect...until the romantic flight scene. When I watched the movie, I enjoyed the sequence and I found Astrid cute but the entire scene just felt kind of forced. And it marked the beginning of my issues with Hiccstrid, as much as I still found the couple enjoyable at the end of the film.

Astrid's bullying was not resolved properly

Astrid never bullied Hiccup the way the others like Snotlout did, but she was still complicit in Hiccup's ostracization. It's obvious she does not like him or have any fondness for him. However, at no point does she apologize or express any remorse for hurting him in the movie. She just suddenly likes him after one (amazing) flight? Hiccup just moves on from her ignoring his existence like that? No reconciliation??

Astrid's punching Hiccup is not sweet

As I have mentioned before in other posts, I find the trope of a female character expressing her love for a guy through violence to be disgusting. The only fictional couples I tolerate this are Jimmy/Cindy (Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius) and Helga/Arnold (Hey Arnold!). I don't mind Jimmy/Cindy because their fights tend to be verbal and argumentative in nature and Jimmy gives as good as he gets from Cindy. They both get a kick from riling each other up, Cindy a bit more than Jimmy. I don't know the Hey Arnold! show very well but I understand why Helga acts the way she does and Arnold is allowed to be angry when she hurts him. When she is truly being romantic and sweet with Arnold she does not hit him. She seems to mainly torment him when she is upholding her mask to hide her feelings. You can say that this is the case for Astrid too. She grew up as a Viking and Viking culture is violent. However, I hate that we are meant to see her hitting Hiccup as part of her love language. It would be fine if it were Tuffnut or Snotlout but Hiccup is not like other Vikings. He is a gentle person and he is not tough like his other counterparts. Astrid's hits hurt him and he expresses obvious pain. But Astrid gives him a follow-up kiss after each punch so it's all good? Not for me.

Hiccstrid felt kind of shallow

I think the relationship felt rushed. Astrid went from disdain to crushing way too quickly. It's like they missed a step in the relationship: friendship. The romantic flight scene should be the starting point where she reconsiders her opinion on Hiccup and maybe after a few more dragon training sessions she would appreciate Hiccup's growth. Maybe her ice queen character thaws over time as she gets to know Hiccup better in training. She laughs at his sarcastic quips. Maybe she begins to sit with him at meal times away from the others. Just small stuff to show their deepening friendship. However, Hiccstrid was not given this development because like many other action type movies the romantic relationship is given the backburner which leads to my final issue.

Hicctrid was not needed

I mentioned earlier that Astrid was not treated like a love interest until like halfway through the movie when we saw the romantic flight scene. Hiccup does not even spend time beyond the opening scene expressing attraction towards her. You can easily forget he has a crush on her. Because ultimately romance was not needed in this story. At all. When you really think about it, what did Astrid contribute to Hiccup and Toothless' story? What does Hiccup and Astrid's relationship contribute to the story? Astrid could have given the pep talk and helped rally the other teens to help Hiccup as a FRIEND, not a love interest. But of course, when the guy becomes a hero and saves the day he needs to get the girl of his dreams at the end. It would have been nice if the first movie focused on developing the Hiccstrid friendship and then developed the romance in the second movie, wrapping it up with their marriage in the third.

Anyway, this is not to say I HATE Hiccstrid. I still need to watch the other two movies before I can truly say whether this couple is truly couples' goals as many people claim. I think they look amazing together and they seem to have great chemistry in HTTYD 2. I think they complement each other in theory and Astrid would be a great help in helping Hiccup lead as chief when the time comes. But I don't love it enough to read fanfiction or watch many Youtube edits about them and at this point, I sometimes find Hiccstrid annoying to see in my fanfics unless it addresses my problems with the development of the relationship.

I repeatedly am like, "I should scream my views on tumblr more again." But back then it was like, HTTYD and Voltron and Undertale. And I think about what I'm into now and I'm like, "What am I gonna talk about? How I'm over the moon about this specific Abbott and Costello movie because it reverses the A&C formula where it's actually straight man Abbott who gets the bunt of the jokes, but actually Abbott and Costello have few face-to-face interactions, Costello primarily works along woman lead Marjorie Reynolds and their chemistry is a delight and their characters stay as friends the full way through, it starts as a full-ass 1780s period drama introducing multiple factions that makes you wonder if you're watching the wrong movie, Costello our funny man has a literal goddamned death scene done straight and he's a ghost the majority of the runtime, the movie is a fun low-stakes treasure hunt mystery in a single house, the comedy is about ghosts having way too much naive fun learning about technology and pulling childish pranks like six-year-olds, why do ghosts flash the electric lights it's because they don't know what electric lights are and they are ecstacic about learning what these do, Costello is such a dumb ghost he keeps getting scared at the possibility of being haunted even though his Starting Mission is he wants to haunt Abbott, AGAIN ABBOTT as the STRAIGHT MAN is being haunted, they have the extra brilliance to make this straight-man-haunted-man be a psychiatrist who goes from a serious, practical man to a blubbering mess "TOOT TOOT IN MY STETHESCOPE!" as he unravels from the hauntings, the story has cute heart and focuses on the ghosts trying to find peace and rest and get un-cursed so they can go reunite with their respective romantic loves in heaven they've never had the chance to be with, you find yourself rooting for the characters and plot rather than watching for outdated crappy slapstick hijinks though of course those exist I mean it's an Abbott and Costello movie what else did you expect when you signed up for an Abbott and Costello movie, it's refreshing to watch 1940s effects because they don't need to be expensive they don't need to be perfect they just need to let you imagine the moment and have fun, I REPEAT it's got cute heart, and AGAIN it's a type of low-stakes movie you don't see in theatres anymore?"

So I just saw the third movie before doing this request and let me say, I absolutely hate this man. Sorry if that affects the story in any way I personally just can't forgive him for eradicating nearly every Night Fury.

Despite how I feel for this man, I can confidently saying he'd be one of the most terrifying yanderes in the HTTYD universe.

In canon people even say he's a predator that won't stop until he gets what he wants.

He's willing to be patient to make sure he gets his target.

He is capable of predicting others and is willing to get his hands dirty to obtain what he wants.

Plus, Grimmel has Deathgrippers under his control.

Alone there is no getting away.

Being the person of his desires would be problematic and most likely end in him having you.

Even as a dragon rider there isn't much you can do to fight back.

He is well equipped to just drug your dragon, maybe even you if he has to.

Grimmel would be a yandere who is patient, he has experience.

He takes his time to play his cards right.

He'll watch and detect your movements and keep in mind what type of dragon you have.

Grimmel is going to be someone who uses your dragon against you in order to have you.

Due to his patience you may not know when he'll strike.

You may know he's looking for you for whatever reason, but not know when he'll strike.

Grimmel will wait until he's learned everything from your behavior to your friends before having a plan.

It's hard to see this man as having genuine love.

He's most likely one to be possessive of his darling, planning to strip you of what you are before making you stay in your place.

Hell, maybe he'll even drug you like the dragons he uses.

Grimmel will play dirty to get his hands on you.

He'll use Deathgrippers to pick off your friends and family, grinning all the while.

He'll make you beg as he threatens the life of your dragon, just so he has some leverage over you.

Truthfully he doesn't care what happens to your overgrown lizard.

He could kill them, or he could spare them, but he'd most likely kill them.

Yet before then he'll use them as a bargaining chip to make you listen.

Meet his demands and he may just spare your pet.

Maybe.

Grimmel would definitely be the type to force his darling to accept him as their spouse.

He doesn't care how much blood is on his hands.

He may even blame the deaths of friends and dragons on you to break you.

Grimmel is definitely a yandere to break you, slowly introducing you to Deathgripper venom he gathered himself.

You can't refuse him on anything if your mind is swimming in the stuff.

It goes without saying he's going to isolate you after he kidnaps you.

Your only contact is him and the Deathgrippers.

You're terrified of the dragons so you'll most likely have to stick by him.

Grimmel doesn't mind a bit of fight in his darling.

He finds it cute, if it gets to be too much for him then a bit more venom floods your system.

If anything you become just as docile as the dragons he commands.

You won't have any time to cry over the death of your dragon by his hands.

You'll be too busy being on cloud nine.

Grimmel is a yandere who likes the hunt and likes control.

He's sadistic and willing to hunt you down as long as he can.

Soon, you'll get tired of the chase.

Like a tired prey animal... you'll fall victim to your hunter.

Then you'll have to deal with him and accept your fate.

Overall, Grimmel is one of the worst HTTYD yanderes you can have.

With you being a dragon rider it only adds to the challenge.

Now he gets to track you and your dragon down... he gets to enjoy the hunt.

Then, when he's ready to end it, he'll have you right in his arms to serve him just as he wants.

i made it So the first httyd books discord is run by a person names Star She's very nice, and its a fairly calm chat Heres a post she has linking to it or at least I believe that link still works

I would liken it to being in like, an afterschool club, where you have a theme for it, but its also just for chilling and hanging out

People are nice, its chill, you can vibe Then theres mine, which i made because i was too anxious and awkward to talk in the aforementioned chat, which is also why im pretty much never active there, RIP I would describe it as "if Tumblr were only httyd book themed"

If the first discord is a casual afterschool club, mine got banned after someone set something on fire, and now we meet under the bleachers at an old abandoned baseball field

Mine's a little messy, leans more heavily towards general fandom stuff, fanart, memes, 1001 AUs, both actually insightful conversation and shitpost type content so ya know theres no general chat for non-httyd convo, or for the movies for that matter, because quite frankly the movies have enough space already, tho we do still talk about it occasionally

All in all, its pretty casual i think, you can talk and share as much or as little as you want, theres not really any rules besides like Be respectful to everyone and in general try to keep things httyd book related (not that that always happens, sometimes youre talking and you end up going off on a ramble about like, piranha or something, its cool, no worries)

Here's James's concept design for the Dragon AU. He's half Wyvern and Half Fire Dragon. So he's all fluffy and feathery. Lol. This design isn't final. I'm still working a few things out. As usual, there's a little lore dump below the cut. Enjoy!

1: James was mentored by Gordon and looks up to him a lot. This was kinda inspired by the movie The Adventure Begins and some awesome posts by @hkpika07 that I loved. (If you see this, "Hi!" 🫣👋 I'm a big fan!)

2: Him and Thomas start out as enemies before gaining trust for each other via the Dragon AU version of James's crash. After that, they maintain a sibling-esque relationship.

3: His hybrid type is called a Phoenix Dragon. And they're pretty rare. Only a few exist. They possess some of the abilities of a Phoenix, thanks to the mixing of Wyvern and Fire Dragon DNA.

4: Those actually aren't ears on his head. They's more like the frills on Toothless's head from the HTTYD franchise. They can express emotions, but he doesn't hear through them.

5: Random fact. His favorite snack is mangos. His mom was a Tropical Wyvern and he inherited that taste for jungle fruit from her.

Worldbuilding stuff for HTTYD UTAU Crossover au

species and hybrids

The Gang live in an archipelago far from the one in the movies and such. There are Night furies and a regional variant of Light furies that still exist there known as Day furies. There are also the Dusk furies which are hybrids of Day furies and Night furies. The regular light furies still exist they are just very rare to find in this particular area. Dawn furies are the hybrids of a a night fury and a Light fury. Dusk and Dawn furies are more common than any pure breed Night furies or Light furies (this includes day furies).

Hybrids of all types are common due to there often being a lack of same species mates available because of the massive amounts of dragon hunting. Most common hybrids include Deadly Nightmares/ Monstrous Nadders, (deadly nadder/Monstrous nightmares) Storm whips/ Razor cutters (Storm cutter/ Razorwhip) Tripple Skrill (Tripple Stryke/ Skrill) and Gradders ,a surprisingly powerful combination of a Deadly nadder and a Gronkle, Just to name a few. There are many MANY other hybrids found throughout this archipelago.

Shipnesting

Ship nesting is when wild dragons choose to nest or make a den in a still floating abandoned dragon hunter ship. This is very rare though and it is even more rare that the dragons ever choose to learn how to sail the ships or stay long term. Dragons making dens in shipwrecks is an entirely different situation and isn't coinciderd shipnesting.

The gang have gone above and beyond and became dragon pirates. :P

Killer (deadly nadder/ Lightfury) Death Fury

Horror is just a sand wraith and not a hybrid. Though it is possible for a Night fury or a Dusk fury to be somewhere in his family tree.

Before I post my super long spam on all the clerks content/Eltingville content I’ve made on here I thought I’d share my doodlez for today (this is just an excuse to rant abt httyd)

Ok so in my opinion I think they ruined Snotlout in the 2nd movie I mean overall it’s an ok movie my issue was that we didn’t get to see their dynamic a lot but I understood cuz this was abt hiccup but Snotlout’s relationship with Ruffnut pissed me off cuz the 3 of them were like brother and sister in the tv show but they made Snotlout have a crush on Ruffnut which was weird, hard to watch, but funny too. I don’t think it’s really THAT good just ok.

Httyd 3 ok overall it’s a poorly done the villain was good the other stuff was bad The light fury, Toothless acting like a dog, Them giving away their dragons it just could’ve been done better. Part 2 and 3 were so weird becuz after the 1st movie the entire gang became the main characters like I said it’s a lil understandable for 2 becuz it was focused on Hiccups mother and his family but 3 was insane they had no screen time it was just Hiccup and Astrid like we get it already 😭 A lot of ppl disliked Snotlout becuz of his “crush” but it wasn’t really a crush it was more like “I admire u” I think the writer or someone who worked on the script had said it not really being a crush but more “ur so cool” typa thing. I didn’t really mind the “crush” tbh I felt like it was such a Snotlout thing to do what ppl ignored was Snotlout’s envy towards Eret and it’s my fav ship becuz u can tell he likes him but would never admit it. And I wouldn’t blame him for being pissy either eret is just automatically accepted by everyone wen he literally used to be the bad guy. We all know Snotlout isn’t shy abt his feelings but I always felt like he was the type to be pissy if he REALLY liked someone. That’s just how I saw it. Snotlout’s outfit ATE tho like all their outfits did 😭

I think both movies could’ve been better ecpecially part 3 and I had wished they kept the sibling dynamic of the twins and Snotlout. I just CANNOT see Snotlout and any of the twins together as a couple they r too much like siblings in the show in my eyes I can see fishlegs but Eret and Snotlout they just go together u know wat I mean? They have a lot more in common etc and yet r so different literally just *muah* perfect🤌🏾

Everyone does the BNHA characters watching Disney movies with their s/o and as much as I love disney, let’s mix it up and do Dreamworks instead! Bakugou + The Road to El Dorado, Tokoyami + HTTYD, Kaminari + Kung Fu Panda, Todoroki + Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, Midoriya + The Prince of Egypt please. Thank you!

Lovely idea, anon! Unfortunately I have not watched most of these movies (minus kung fu panda but that's like when the first movie came out lol), so I can't give in-depth headcanons. However,

I do think that Bakugou would hog the snacks as you two watched the movie together, as well as pretend to be annoyed when you fell asleep against his shoulder, though, he quickly adjusts the cover over your body so that you don't get too cold.

I think Tokoyami believes dragons are fascinating creatures (seeing as he too can take a dive in the sky) and happily watches the entire franchise. Tokoyami makes sure to give you an in depth movie analysis after each movie is over, and you both have a moment where you consider what you would name your dragon if you two ever got one together.

I think Kaminari is constantly doing martial arts moves once you finish kung fu panda, but he’s always failing somehow— one time he tried to do a kick spin and ran straight into the wall. Though, Denki’s favorite move is doing his special "sneak attack" where he suddenly comes behind you and hugs your waist tightly.

I think that whatever movie you put on, Todoroki enjoys. I believe he grows sentimental while watching the movie, maybe even expressing how frustrated he was of how the horses were being treated with a frown on his face. You love how passionate he’s become and Shoto urges you to have a movie marathon now.

I think that Izuku is always interested in watching movies that show different parts of the world, so he genuinely enjoyed this pick. He, like Tokoyami, goes into a spiral of the deeper meanings behind the plot and characters and is the type to be leaned forward with wide eyes as he takes in everything. He also is likely the one to stay up and laughs mid rant when he notices that you’ve dozed off. It’s the cutest sight to him.
