Percy isn’t a half blood, and everyone has known that for years, but he still comes to camp.

After he becomes a god with a domain, after he fashions Salimeh out of clay and ocean water, Mr. D brings up the fact that Camp Half Blood isn’t the appropriate place for him anymore, not that it ever was.

The other kids cry out in protest – most of them are his friends, after all, or at least like the prestige of being able to call a god a peer.

“Are you really going to try and kick a god out of here?” he asks, raising an eyebrow. He’s not certain he could beat Mr. D in a fight, but he has been training with his siblings for a long time, and they have a lot more battle practice than he does. Although, they are less viciously creative, because it’s hard for anyone to beat Mr. D in that area.

“I’m going to make you pull your weight,” he sniffs. “You’re now the head counselor of Camp Half Blood. Put some of those godly powers to good use and help the kids up their training.”

Percy’s willing, but he has no idea how to do that. Luckily, Annabeth is here to help him.

“I know, I know, I’m stuck with you. I wouldn’t have it any other way.” please!

"Thanks for coming on such short notice." Dick both looks and sounds harried, Bat-comm in hand as he ushers Kon in from the balcony. "I'll try to be back as soon as I can, but you never know with Arkham breakouts—also, there's some leftover chicken soup in the fridge, if he can keep that down it'll be great, and—yes, B, I'm on my way, I heard you the first seventeen times—sorry, Conner, it's a bit hectic, but—"

"Hey, man." Kon gives him a reassuring thumbs-up. "I got this. You go do your thing and let me wrangle the poor sickly scrunkle, yeah?"

Dick pauses on one leg, one shoe on, the other in hand. "The scrunkle?"

"Tim," Kon clarifies. "You know, 'cuz he's scrunkly."

"...I see," Dick says, not sounding like he particularly sees at all. But there's no time to explain; he flashes a quick grin, fires off a two-fingered salute, and calls one more "Thanks again!", and then he's gone.

Kon cocks his head and waits.

After seventeen seconds, the jingle bell he stuck to the outside of Dick's bedroom windowframe on his way in chimes, and he snorts to himself as he superspeeds right on over to the fire escape outside.

"Predictable, Rob," he says, lounging midair. Tim, staring at the bell in his hand with great prejudice, scowls; the effect is rather ruined by his adorable hot pink bird-printed pajamas. "You definitely have a fever if you fell for that one."

Tim folds his arms over his chest and glares at him. Coughs. Glares some more. "I don't need a"—cough, cough—"babysitter. I'm not that sick. Dick's just fussing."

Kon eases himself back in through the window, closes it against the night air, and presses his lips to Tim's forehead, ignoring the way Tim splutters. He's cute when he gets grumpy. "Mmm, well, that certainly feels like a high fever to me!"

"It's only a hundred and one," Tim mutters. And coughs again. Christ on a bike, he really sounds like death warmed over. The red flush to ohis face really isn't helping things, either.

Also. Christ on a bike? Really? Sheesh, Kon's spending too much time with Ma's friends on Bingo Sundays.

"Mm, yeah, so we're getting you back in bed," Kon informs him, and plucks him off the ground, sets him on his hip like the world's most disgruntled toddler, and carries him back over to Dick's bed, where he's clearly been being fussed over already, if the box of tissues, empty mugs, and cough drops are anything to go by.

"I'm not that sick!" Tim protests. Kon sees right through him, though; his wiggles of dissent are weaker than usual. "I can help. You heard Dick earlier, it's all hands on deck—"

"Which is why, if things get particularly dire, Dick already said he'll call me in," Kon says, and draws the blankets up over Tim's chest. "Seriously, Rob. The others have it in hand. And I," he grins, cupping Tim's face in his palms, "have you in hand."

Tim favors him with a very flat look, followed by a very pathetic sniffle. Oh, jeez, Kon wants to bundle him up and feed him soup and fuss over him forever. "Ha ha."

"I know, I'm hilarious." Kon squishes his cheeks before letting go. "Now, I'm gonna go get you some soup and your next dose of meds, and you're gonna stay right here in bed and not try any more escape attempts because you know I'm gonna catch you and bring you right back. And we are gonna watch your choice of 'Wendy', 'Star Trek', 'Star Wars', or 'Lord of the Rings', until you inevitably knock the fuck out because you are sick as hell, dude, and I do not mean in the Tony Hawk way. Got it?"

Tim heaves a weary, put-upon sigh that just sends him into another coughing fit; it sounds rough and scratchy and painful just to hear, and Kon winces in sympathy, leaning over to rub his back. Aw, Tim...

"I guess I can live with that," Tim rasps, his eyes watering. Kon is seized by the urge to kiss his forehead again, properly this time; he wants to take care of him so bad.

"Good! 'Cuz you don't get a choice." Kon gently ruffles his hair, eases him back against his pillows, and then tuts softly to himself and strokes the hair back from Tim's sweaty forehead. His poor Rob...

"Yeah, I know, I know. I'm stuck with you." Tim sighs again, closing his eyes. After a moment, though, he smiles ever-so-slightly, his eyelashes dark against his pale cheeks. "...I wouldn't have it any other way."

That's gotta be the fever talking—it's true, and Kon knows it's true, but Tim wouldn't just say it like that—but it makes Kon's heart flutter all the same.

He leans down and kisses Tim's forehead before he can lose his resolve. "Right back at'cha, Rob," he says, smiling. "Now lemme go get you your soup."

"Good luck," Tim mumbles, opening his eyes just slightly. "Don't fall in, have fun, et cetera..."

Kon laughs. "Will do," he says, and stands to leave.

(It's not until he's waiting in front of the microwave that he realizes: since the moment he left Tim's side, he's been—quite literally—walking on air.)

@littleplant1998 tagged me for my favorite books i’ve read in 2021!  This hasn’t been a great reading year for me (i think i tallied 15 or so books?) but here we are.  I’m tagging @outlaw-baby @lowbrw @huilannie @ismenes @underthegibbousmoon @aurorean and anyone else who wants to do this (feel free to @ me in your post).

Go Tell It On The Mountain, James Baldwin. Definitely the favorite thing I’ve read this year, by a country mile.  I’d never read any Baldwin before but I definitely will read more.  There’s a real . . . vitality to it, or heart, or maybe a momentum?  Which makes it riveting and a page turner for me in a way that other entries in the “historical fiction centering the downtrodden” genre usually are not (even if I also like them).  All the female characters are drawn with a lot of care and attention and kindness, and are allowed both vulnerabilities and bitter edges. . . I enjoyed also the shifting POV structure, getting all of these perspectives on the tragedy of a family, but also its hopes and its loves.  It’s been a while now since I read it and I don’t think I’m doing it justice.

In Other Lands, Sarah Rees Brennan. A portal fantasy about the most annoying little bisexual boy in the world escaping a deeply sterile home life for a world of elves!  and mermaids!  and... fantasy racism?  I read it and then immediately caused sabrina @lowbrw to read it and then we spent endless hours strategizing about how with only 8 small to medium sized edits we could fix her i.e. convert it from “charming but flawed romp” to “one of our favorite ever books”.  edit entries vary from “slightly better prose” to “more interesting subversive elf gender” to “more coherent worldbuilding to support more consistent revolutionary ethics”.  ultimately though despite thinking that the way the book treats its fantasy war crimes is unrigorous, probably nothing else i’ve read this year has beat it this year for sheer amount of enjoyment directly or indirectly brought to me.  so here it is.  and thanks sabrina, for everything, mwah.

Shards of Honor, Lois McMaster Bujold. While we’re on the topic of fantasy war crimes!  i don’t know how much this really stuck in my brain, but i’ve always meant to read more of the vorkosigan saga and i’ve been on a huge space opera kick recently.  the momentum of this book is so fun. . . cordelia’s a really magnetic protagonist and i enjoy how cordelia and aral’s experiences surviving together in the beginning of the novel are like a secret (to other characters) emotional core for the rest of the book.

Forugh Farrokhzad Poetry (assorted) I read selections from her Michael Hillmann biography, as well as from this website.  Like the Baldwin, it’s a little blurry to me now and I’m not going to do it justice.  But her work is really silky stuff, really suggestive of hm.  The feminine urge to have a decadently rich internal world.  Speaking of poetry, the other poet I really enjoyed reading last year is Frank Bidart, who I’m intending to read more of this year. . . I also read the Kochan chapbook by Jack Gilbert, which I’ve been meaning to post my scans of online when I have the time because it’s hard to acquire (I borrowed it from my university library).

i’d read turn of the screw before, by henry james, and not been particularly into it, so i wasn’t expecting too much from the beast in the jungle.  and it’s truly frustratingly dense, and the sentence structures he uses can be torturous.  but the types of observations he makes, the way he describes human tendencies, is very interesting and specific.  Also fundamentally its a story about a self-obsessed guy ruining his own life which is fun.

Tim is a very serious guy, busy doing very serious work.

"—still don't know why anyone would write this! Actually, who the fuck paid them to write this?! Is this the state of journalism in today's world?" Bart flails a hand at his laptop screen, laughing so hard he's turning red. "Someone—someone got paid to write—to write this?! This is a self-help article?!"

"I just don't—why would you—" Kon stares at the screen, too, fingers steepled and pressed to his lips in deep consternation. "I can't even finish my dramatic reading! Why would—why would—who even wants to phone a friend in the middle of doing an enema?"

Tim is a very serious guy, busy doing very serious work, by which he means playing Minesweeper while listening to his very un-serious friends read a how-to guide on, for some reason, coffee enemas. It happens. He really did mean to get work done, but sitting in the common room was a mistake; he's just been listening and swallowing laughter for the past ten minutes.

"I can promise you this. If any of you ever phone me with anything up your ass, we are not friends anymore," Cassie says, sounding disturbed.

That does it. Tim's finger slips and clicks a bomb instead of a safe tile as he wheezes with sudden, explosive laughter.

All three of them whip around to look at him; Bart is the first to crack into giggles, too, then Kon smothers a chuckle into his hands, and finally Cassie slumps back onto the cushions behind her, cackling. Tim really, truly does try to get ahold of himself, but it's a losing battle at this point.

"Where did you even find this article, Bart?" he manages, grinning breathlessly. "Send me the link." It sounds like a great way to harass Dick, and Tim needs to do that yesterday.

"Why?" Bart shoots back immediately. "Feeling inspired?"

"You better not call me when you try it out," Cassie wheezes.

Kon, meanwhile...

Oh. Wait. What's up with Kon? He's still grinning, but it's a softer look than before; his eyes sparkle with warmth as he looks at Tim, perching in the bay window. That's a very, ah... fond? Yes, fond. A very fond look for someone whose companions are currently losing their shit about a self-help article about coffee enemas.

Tim meets his gaze and quirks an eyebrow. Kon blinks at him, seeming surprised; did he think Tim wouldn't notice him gazing over like that?

"Sorry, sorry," Kon says, though he certainly doesn't sound particularly sorry. “When you laugh like that, it just—man, you’re so beautiful, you know that?”

Tim's face immediately flames. That's rich, coming from the most beautiful guy in not just the room, but the entire city. Country. World? Yeah, world. "Uh."

"Oh my god, shut the fuck up, you're so sappy!" Bart groans, smacking Kon on the shoulder. Kon, because he's Kon, just preens at his complaints. "Stop being a cheese before I kick your ass!"

"Be careful that it doesn't have coffee in it!" Cassie snickers into her hands.

Normally, Tim would join in on the ribbing. Right now, though, he's still a little stuck on Kon just casually calling him beautiful for laughing. What the fuck. They've been officially dating for two weeks! He can't just spring that kind of thing on Tim! And the worst (best) part is, because he's Kon, Tim knows he's being completely genuine about it!

Why did this have to happen during this, of all conversations?

"Now, Bart," Kon says, and aggressively ruffles Bart's hair. "You know Tim is the only one here with the rights to touch my ass, kicking or not."

Bart blows an obnoxiously loud raspberry. Tim drops his face into his hands.

Yeah, he's a serious guy, alright. Real serious about... starting a new game of Minesweeper and listening to his friends continue to be a bunch of comedians.
