Completely off topic but…

I want a Byler College AU where Will is a hunt seat horse boy/baseball player and Mike is taking a Western Wellness riding class because “screw it, I need a quarter credit to graduate”.

Mike is the playing his guitar/being a musician, and doing physics homework at 2 am because he couldn’t sleep kind of person. He’s the “I’m going to play my guitar because it’s 4 am and I have insomnia”, up at 8 am barely 15 minutes before he needs to rush out the door for a 9 am class, doesn’t grab breakfast, his friends always ask if he’s eaten, and is somehow running off of monster energy drinks and has yet to have a caffeine & sugar crash, probably studied for hours for the exam and didn’t need to because he’s always miraculously getting good grades person. The “I’ll just add an English major on because I’ve already taken 3 classes of literature already” and “always hiding out in the theatre department” person.

Will is the up at 4 am because I have to workout, get to the barn by 6 am, grab a granola bar and a coffee for breakfast, go ride my danger bicycle with a brain over some 4-5 ft jumps, then go to class, maybe squeeze lunch in, go to baseball practice by 4 pm, grab dinner, then go back to the barn at 7:30 pm to ride some more. Then he has a meeting once a week at 9 pm for his fraternity, and then, maybe he stays up until 11 pm doing history homework, portfolio work, and painting in the art dept. building before leaving and going to bed at 11:30 pm person. He’s the “I’m going to the barn. Be back in an hour” *takes 4 hours instead of 1 hour* person, he meticulously cares for his horse and refuses to have anything less than the best for the one animal he’s loved more than any other person, since he was 12. He’s the “Look! I found a barn cat!” *proceeds to stay cuddling with the barn cat for an hour* person. And he’s always willing to help out anyone he knows is new at the barn.

Mike is tacking up for a lesson and isn’t quite getting it. Will is in the other wash rack with his 17-18 hand bay gelding (bc he’d be a bay kind of person), and he stops to help.

Will: “Do you need help saddling?”

Mike: “Oh, yeah. Well, kind of.” *awkwardly fiddling with saddle pad & saddle*

Will: “Here,” *grooms horse, tacks Mike’s horse up & bridles it* “Monica’s a good horse, she’ll take care of you. I’m a bit surprised she’s being used for a beginner lesson, it’s a little daunting to ride 16 hands at first,”

Mike: *stammering in his confusion bc he finds Will attractive* “Why would I be riding 16 hands?”

Will: “oh, no. I uh, I meant Monica,” *rubs horse’s neck* “she’s 16 hands tall. It’s how we measure the height of a horse.”

*ducks his head sheepishly* “Sorry, I sometimes forget not everyone has been around these guys for half their life,”

El is a western riding queen and she and her brother constantly get into bickering arguments after practice.

Chrissy is a hunt seat rider that dragged Will into it after learning he had been taking lessons prior to college.

Mike is asked to join the Western team, so now every other weekend, he has to go to shows and watch as his crush - with very nice riding form- absolutely kills it in the arena.

Max is a supportive best friend and just likes to show up to see El absolutely killing it.

Lucas is on the baseball team with Will, and constantly jokes that Will just picked the two sports that make him look good in tight fitting pants.

Mike defending Will’s decision to play baseball and ride horses because his boyfriend looks fantastic in his baseball uniform and in his breeches.

I’m well aware this is a very niche genre of fanfiction, but I just can’t stop thinking about it. And I’m probably going to write it at some point, because Byler as equestrians… and all of the jokes I could make 👀

I am so unable to be friends with 99% of horse people. Today barn friend was telling me she boarded at a dressage barn years ago with her old quarter horse and was told she had "the wrong kind of horse" and should get a new one. Then she was at a huntseat(?) barn and they told her she had the wrong tack and clothes constantly. I think I'd kill someone if they talked to me like that.

I can relate bc I've only boarded at western barns and they all thought I was a freak for not barrel racing or doing gymkanas every weekend. I would literally get weird looks for saying "I don't do shows/competitions". Like I'm not a good rider leave me alone.

I have a mustang so I can only imagine the weird horse racism I'd get from freaks if I tried to do anything with rogue. Just bizarre.

Barn friend also told me about a rich old friend of hers who was a trust fund kid and never worked and literally rode expensive horses all day every day and was confused when she stayed with friend and she. Had to go to work in the morning. She told her "just tell them you can't go" and just. I can't.

Rich people sure are different. this led into a conversation about haha funny submarine crunch and all CEOs should die. Good talk w her tonight.

THE EQUESTRIAN FESTIVAL IS NEAR YALL!

So earthangel and I are staying at Jorvik Stables, preparing and practicing for the festival. We are doing jumping, huntseat (jumping equitation), and an eventing-class! Intermediate to advanced levels. I'm so excited.

I thought I would get to board her in one of the fancy front pastures, but being a mare, she can't be turned out with horses she doesn't know (she generally abuses them) so...

She's all alone in a back pasture, across from some goats. She seems happy but also disgruntled at not being the center of the stables' attention.

She was also super interested in my camera and tried to make friends with it.

cas is from a snobby huntseat barn

dean is from a scrappy eventing barn

they meet at horse trials in the jumper ring (cas clears everything but is slow, dean is fast but knocks a rail, neither win but dean decides cas is his new rival. cas just thinks dean is neat)

cas abandons his barn and discipline for dean's and has to relearn how to ride and dean is very pleased at this bc cas has Seen The Error Of His Ways and changed discipline and it's good to be able to keep a close eye on your "rival".

dean and cas construct some truly intricate rituals: (you've never seen intricate rituals until you've seen horse girl best friend rituals, trust me) dean gets flustered when cas does barn chores in front of him (his arms look nice when he chucks the haybales) and cas gets flustered when dean teaches him how to braid manes (their hands are touching!!) and there are so many times they share a motel bed for shows.

and sammy is there too he has a bigger horse than dean and never lets dean forget it, and dean gets very defensive of his gelding. dean is the horse girl who will make sure you know that her very short horse is NOT a pony he is one inch taller than the definition of a pony he is a HORSE thank you very much!!! sorry my gelding isn't a FREAK like your mare sammy, taller horses are overrated, my gelding can make turns your mare could only dream of!!!

john isn't there he died in an accident that happened when he and mary went trail riding one day and what happened was really tragic but at least his horse didn't get hurt, just him ;).

I’m like. I never thought my mental issues got bad until I was older but like thinking back to what I remember of my childhood and realizing nah ya boy was always like this. Overly obsessed with things to the point I could not pay attention. No idea what my personality was outside of thing I liked. I absolutely HATED this girl I knew in sixth grade because she rode horses and people asked HER questions about horses. But every part of my identity was so tied into being the horse kid that I didn’t know who I was without that. All I knew was horses. so I was just seething with jealousy because y’all have known me longer I’m the horse kid me. Who is this faker, she doesn’t even jump. 

I mean of course that aspect has chilled out entirely but just. Realizing the not knowing who I am outside of one major interest has literally always been a facet of me? Wild man.
