Huw Parkinson’s videos of Donald Trump apparently yanking an accordion back and forth while delivering speeches were in broad circulation back in January of 2017. But sadly, our kids did not bring them to my attention until relatively recently.

Once one has had it pointed out that Mr. Trump repeatedly makes peculiar hand gestures that positively beg for the addition of a cartoon squeeze box, it is very hard to unsee it. I was on the lookout for the gesture during last night’s debate, and was not disappointed. It is good to have something to occupy one’s attentions besides what is actually being said.

In the past, anything remotely approaching a political commentary here has been received with a fair amount of negative blowback. Our younger son would like me to remind you that, during a Star Wars / Politicians series of napkins, after I drew Trump next to Jar Jar Binks, one commenter posted that the only way to appropriately even the score would be to draw Obama next to Satan.

Perhaps I should draw Biden with an appropriate musical instrument? Or a Star Wars character?

Platform Employment - New Model for the Working Poor?

“Young people aren’t just enthusiastic users of Uber, Deliveroo and TaskRabbit – they are often working for them. But while promising flexibility, these jobs are precarious and low-paid. Is this the new model for the working poor?”

“In a preliminary report led by Ursula Huws, a professor of labour and globalisation at Hertfordshire Business School, 50% of those working in what the report deems ‘crowd work’ in the UK are under 35.”

“At the same time, millennials are enthusiastic users of gig-economy apps and services, whether they are sorting out their laundry, ordering takeaway food or assembling furniture. One survey found that 57% of students in London would use Uber over a black cab, and its popularity extends to students in other cities. While trust in the media and many corporations and NGOs is diminishing, millennials feel strong brand loyalty to gig-economy companies such as Airbnb.”

“When it comes to working in the gig economy, Huws is clear: young people aren’t usually in it by choice. While one in 40 say the gig economy provides the majority of their income, for most it is part of a piecemeal existence; they cannot find other work or they are subsidising other low-paid jobs. The open letter, published today, has been signed by the chief executives of major sports governing bodies and charities, including the Football Association, the English Cricket Board, England Athletics, the Lawn Tennis Association and the Youth Sport Trust. Read the open letter below:

On behalf of the country’s leading sport organisations, we ask for your commitment to tackle an alarming trend.The wellbeing of young people across the UK is in decline. This comes at a time when they are increasingly missing out on the benefits of sport and play. Only one in five young people is active for 60 minutes every day and Physical Education is being squeezed from the timetable in many secondary schools.

We believe that the inactivity of young people, and the associated problems this is posing for their physical and mental health and wellbeing, is nothing short of a public health emergency. Too many are growing up overweight or obese, unhappy, lost and lonely. We ask for your public commitment during this General Election campaign that, should your party form the next government, you would set out a long-term, bold and measurable plan to:

i) Tackle the decline in young people’s wellbeing through harnessing the power of play, sport and physical education

ii) Ensure every young person enjoys an hour a day of sport and physical activity, backed up by good quality teacher training and investment in school sport facilities.
