#hw: plot drop

the halloween ball is in full swing, and the white house is full of music and laughter. children are bouncing around with more sugar in their systems than they’ve had in a long while, and the adults are dancing the night away and indulging in a few drinks. it’s become much more of a carefree party than a formal ball, and everyone is clearly having a wonderful time the longer the night goes on.

at the stroke of midnight, however, everything changes. the lights flicker, and an ominous wind blows through the room, slamming doors shut around the guests and extinguishing the candles laid around the room. despite the sudden darkness, everyone can sense a sudden and ominous presence lurking in the room, though many do their best to ignore it, hoping it’s merely a planned stunt to get them into the halloween spirit. as the darkness lingers, however, the crowd becomes more and more restless, people moving to leave. immediately, louder sounds of unrest come from the doors, where people trying to slip out find themselves unable to open them. even those with magical means find themselves stepping right back into the room after leaving. 

as the secret service begins trying to calm the people and learn what’s happening, a scream sounds throughout the room, and suddenly, the lights snap back on, revealing hordes of monsters straight out of the old fashioned horror movies so many of them celebrated. wolfmen howl as they jump onto their victims, dracula style vampires drain the blood of anyone they can get their hands on, mummies cast their magic and draw in those around them. gill-men and frankenstein creatures tear apart all who get too close, and some are even attacked by invisible men, completely unseen to the eye. 

as panic rises and bodies hit the floor, some even are turned into these creatures themselves, only adding to the chaos. it’s a new way to celebrate halloween, and not one anyone wanted or even thought to consider.

at dawn, the creatures will vanish along with the enchantments holding them in the white house, but until then, you’ll need to fight to survive, even if the one coming at you is someone you know and love. if you make it to sunrise, you can escape the night of horrors, but only if you make it to dawn alive. the clock is ticking.

TLDR ; what had originally seemed like a harmless prank to bring some halloween spirit to the night has turned deadly. halloween horror classic monsters have invaded the gala where they were once celebrated, honored, costumes. the exterior doors to the white house now find themselves locked and barricaded, the residents of washington dc now trapped with no hopes of escape. the entirety of the white house has now been opened to the public, in hopes of allowing them a chance to escape the monsters, to give the citizens the best chance of survival. you only have one task now, make it to sunrise. and make sure you do not become one of these creatures.

come on friends, did you really think we could have an entire halloween event without including some kind of chaos? it wouldn’t be a hidden event without something going horribly wrong at an official event! this time around, you’ll be fighting off the universal classic monsters-- so hey, maybe people will think twice about buying those cheap spirit halloween vampire teeth next halloween. either way !! we hope you guys have fun with this, and get to explore your characters in a different way, and we hope this brings some more halloween energy to your lives!!

THE GIST : 

monsters have invaded. survive. 

it is completely up to you how your character reacts. they could panic, they could look to protect people, they could be having the time of their life getting to fight back, they could be entirely selfish and barricade themselves in a safe room and not let anyone in. the sky is the limit! 

technically the front door is the limit, as there is no escape. no magic will work to get people out of the white house. any exterior door is locked and will not reopen until sunrise. 

the secret service agents will be doing what they can to calm the situation, to try and usher people to safety but of course, no one could have prepared for this sort of thing. they will be doing their best, but it is on you to protect yourself or not.

THE MONSTERS :

your muses will be attacked by the ‘universal classic monsters’ !! there are multiple of them throughout the white house, so you’re not just fighting against the same dracula, but multiple dracula-style vampires! 

the specific monsters are : dracula, wolfman, frankenstein’s monster/bride of frankenstein, creature from the black lagoon, mummies, and the invisible man !! we can provide more information regarding them upon request. (aka dm maig, they have an unhealthy amount of knowledge about this)

your muses can be attacked , injured , turned or killed by these monsters! it is just up to you if you want anything like that to happen !

if you are looking to have your muse suffer a major injury (anything more than a broken bone), or be killed, you must message the main. it’s considered a major plot, and we have to keep track ! we need to know who is dying, what is happening to them, and who the plot will be with ! thanks friends!

please note, for anyone unfamiliar with character deaths within the rp : a character cannot permanently die. they will be resurrected after about an hour~ , but will have the opposite memory status to when they died. unaware characters will become aware, and vice versa!

if you are looking to have your character turned into one of these monsters, again message the main, but just note that at dawn, your muse will return to their original state! they will not stay a vampire/wolfman/etc after the event concludes!

PLOTTING :

feel free to begin transitioning threads, making new calls, doing whatever you feel is best to organize yourself for this !!

please note, first and foremost that while the event itself is still mandatory, the plot drop is optional. we understand that this might not be everyone’s speed, and you are free to incorporate as much or as little of the plot drop as you wish

if you wish to just continue on with the regular event threads, you are free to, you can always say your character left early once the event is over so they did not get caught up in this. but just know that it will still be canon to the rp, so plot accordingly if you’d rather stick to the classic gala threads!

if you are going to be participating, then this plot drop is going into effect OCTOBER 14TH AT 9AM EST!

Hi hello idk how this works + never gposed in my life so she’s doing literally nothing here but this is my char Tatake Take in her red mage fit <3 featuring Middy cuz he’s bestie. More under the cut this might get long, it’ll just be a mess of ideas with no coherency LMFAO. Currently it’s white glowing hair because it’s post SHB, where she’s channeled the light within her into something manageable, which will inevitably turn back into her original red highlights. Spoilers for like everything up to SHB btw:

Honestly her lore I keep changing back and forth cuz I didn’t start using mods till SHB 😭 (just beat it btw so 🤫 on any spoilers afterwards) Like originally she had cat ears + a tail and it was gonna be a whole thing about her being some kinda spirit/yokai from the forest LMFAO???

Rn the barebones idea I have is that she’s part dragon and hid it till SB when Rhalgr’s Reach was attacked. (I won’t even lie, I’m low(high)key inspired by Dan Heng’s lore from Honkai Star Rail, I’m even debating if I wanna steal the reincarnation thing or not 😭) so yeah she is. Old LMFAO

Zenos with his plot armor and unexplained strength ends up landing what should’ve been a killing blow on Tatake. Everyone watches on in horror, which makes way to shock as she begins to change in response to the physical stress, revealing her draconic eyes, horns, tail, and the glowing highlights of her hair signifying her power. Zenos looks on in surprise, then intrigue as he sees what the famed Warrior of Light has been hiding all this time. Afterwards, it was no trouble pushing away him and his forces back.

(This ends up creating a somewhat subplot conflict between Lyse and Tatake, as the former is angered by this reveal; why didn’t she use this power to save everyone in Rhalgr’s Reach, hell, even back at the Wall? Did Papalymo really need to die if this what their friend was capable of?)

Nobody gets an explanation from Tatake. It’s the twins who get the closest to an answer, which even then wasn’t much. Their mother figure simply says that it was of absolute importance that nobody finds out, as she hid away her draconic features almost immediately after Zenos and his forces retreated. But, she points out with a bitter smile, she supposed it was too late for that now. Alphinaud and Alisaie want to know more so badly, but Tatake’s comfort and boundaries are infinitely more important than any curiosity they have.

On the carriage to Gridania, she kept her answers to Bremondt’s questions pretty vague, aware of two sleepy twins watching with interest. (She/I started as a lancer)

So yeah you might assume HW was a very important expansion for Tatake. It was! Seeing her brethren struggle made her wish and strive for the same thing Ysayle did; peace between dragon and mankind. The dragons weren’t afraid to subtly nudge at her to be her true self, either. Tatake was also not a fan of Estinien’s views and attitude LMFAO

(It’s also the expansion where Alphinaud couldn’t help but notice the way the dragons were talking to Tatake; it didn’t seem like they were exactly referring to her status as the WoL. Of course, he had virtually no information to go off of, so he dropped that line of thinking. Later on, he’ll realize that he truly knew nothing about the Lalafell he figuratively looked up to.)

Side note, Tatake continues to hide away her features until SHB, where the absorbed Light makes it too difficult for her to do so. Fortunately, almost nobody questions it, as people on the First are a bit too focused on trying to survive their world.

Another side note! Tatake currently mains Reaper, but she is also very proficient in Dragoon, Machinist, Samurai, and Red Mage. She’s currently learning Dancer (at least, the Eorzean version of it. She was worried using the traditional dances she knew would have people asking questions), which she finds to be a good stress reliever from her troubles.

Anyways that’s all I got hahaaaaa, I stay off of tumblr and I come back just to go full send on my character 😭 whoever’s got one of those templates with questions for WoL character building plz send, I’d love to fill one of those out for my reference + understanding Tatake more as her writer

As for different things from Fe4...

Well, add more convos between characters, like support convos especially with characters who "are/became" married !

And maybe... Make fire tomes not so damn heavy to the point they're not garbage anymore, ditto with giving one or two more point of weight to wind tomes, jugdral really needs some balancing (but it shouldn't balance the general unfairness that is HB and the associated HW).

Oh, and of course, correct Hilda's major Dain blood lol, and give the ish sibs minor Fala blood (but still nothing for scipio he'll forever remain a joke !).

As for the plot...

It's opening another can, rather, super container of worms anon !

In a nutshell, give more plot importance to Julia so she's not in her own tier anymore, maybe have Tine not join if Arthur is the one who killed Ishtore (give him more relevance damn, Tine is supposed to like/love her cousins but dgaf, after crying for his death for 3 seconds, when the LA wants to recruit her ?), kinslaying being so vile in Jugdral verse, Johan/lva doesn't die when the other is picked up, let's have them maybe be a green unit sometimes met in a castle, or have him lead off screen armies (like they're sent to meet with Leif before Seliph officially rescues him in Fe4) etc...

Oh and unless it's a pure Fe4 remake, incluses elements from Fe5 (with Fe5 remake proper being another game), like the feud between Galzus and Shanan (resolve it ffs, let us have the reason why Shanan's dad slaughtered one of his sisters and threw his nephew in exile, but didn't want the same fate for his other sister), Faerghus shenanigans and, of course, Saias stuff (him joining Julius' side and picking Valflame in the last map, only being recruitable by Julia).

Edit bcs I forgot :

Give Julia the Lord status, aka when she dies it's game over because she's the only one who can use Naga to defeat Loptyr !

For all of the narrative integration in its gameplay, Fe4 really dropped the Ball with having Seliph and pals be able to defeat Julius once he's fully Loptyr'd

So. Dawntrail.

I finished the 7.0 MSQ roughly a week ago, during the early access period, and overall I had a great time with it! My thoughts on the expansion as a whole have been marinating in the brain pot since then, and I wanted to touch on some of those thoughts and why I think this has been such a great expansion so far, at least story-wise. All under a cut for spoilers, and I’ll honestly be talking mostly vaguely about plot stuff anyway. And I’ll mark anything specific that is spoilers, and dividing things zone by zone.

Anyway.

First and foremost, since I feel like this will help put my overall opinion into perspective, is my ranking of expansions so far.

1: SHB will forever be king to me in a ton of ways; part of it is this was the expansion I started with, but I also just love the story it tells so much and even if I have little gripes, they’re all so minor that it doesn’t really matter

2: a tie between HW and EW, actually--both are excellent, and while I have some issues with parts of them, the positives for the most part outweigh my issues

3: another tie between STB and ARR--I think both of these are good, but have some issues that really can’t be ignored. And they’re only at the bottom because that’s how lists work.

DT is not perfect in my eyes (not by a long shot), but it is giving SHB a true run for its money in terms of how much I liked it. Like I said initially, I don’t think it’s without its problems (no expansion is, even SHB no matter how much I love it), but overall there is just SO much good stuff here that I am 100% willing to forgive it.

Before I get into the details, I want to say: making it clear from the pre-order stuff and Viper and all that this is the FF9 expansion really is important. FF9 begins fairly bright and cheery and its aesthetic lends itself well to hiding what subject matter it tackles, but then it eventually starts dealing with a LOT of heavy topics--and Dawntrail is very much living up to that in my book.

Expansion Start

Going into this expansion I really had no idea what to expect. I admit that the 6.X patch cycle really threw me for a loop once DT was announced, and it felt kind of pointless to be doing so much with the void? I was like, “Why are we spending so much time on this, when we should be looking at things that are relevant to Dawntrail??” because none of it made sense to me.

One of the issues I had with STB for a long time was Lyse. Don’t worry, I’ve come around on her, but it took a while. The biggest issue I had was that the devs tried to take an existing character and turn her into something other than what we knew, and it threw me entirely. I think they learned the lesson from that, which is why the focus is on Wuk Lamat, a new character, and on Krile, an older character we know so that we feel more invested in what is to come.

Another aspect of STB that kind of threw me off was…how little focus it got after the HW story ended? Like we get two patches worth fo story to lead into it, and I 100% think the Ga Bu stuff is important, and obviously the Warriors of Darkness story is important to set up part of SHB, but…everything to set up STB felt…not there? And we meet Lyse properly during 3.55/3.56, just like Wuk Lamat. We don’t have time to get to know her as this new person before we’re dropped into STB proper. And that didn’t help me when it came to bonding with Lyse--it took until the Lakshmi trial before I realized how I was supposed to feel about her my second time playing through Stormblood.

Wuk Lamat won me over really fast, thankfully--she has a certain kind of charm to her that endeared me to her pretty quickly (she’s very Sora from Kingdom Hearts coded in my eyes), and I was quietly interested to see what would happen with her character arc going forward. To be frank, I was more excited about how much better my character looked in game than in the updated benchmark than what little of the story we knew! I also was more invested in Krile than anything else story-wise; she’s always been a low key fave of the Scions for me so it’s nice to see her be much more involved in MSQ this time around.

But then we hit the first city and actually got into the story. Tulliyollal is such a lovely city, and its inn room was the first to make me go “wow” since the Pendants (since the Baldesion Annex was fun but still feels way too cluttered for me). I loved meeting Gulool Ja Ja, and his vibe as a character was excellent. I was surprised by what the rite of succession was shaping up to be, but once you see the Saga monuments and hear the story behind them it pretty quickly clicks as to what the Dawnservant wants the claimants to the throne to learn about during the rite. That was when I rsaw the mentor-type role my character would play, and once I knew what role the WOL plays for Wuk Lamat and in at least the start of Dawntrail’s story, I was in. I was determined to embrace that role in a way I had issues doing when I played through STB initially for Lyse.

One other thing: I was super surprised by Zoraal Ja being the one Wuk Lamat was prioritizing as a threat, and that he was the one who couldn’t be allowed to be Dawnservant. I guess I’d been anticipating the aloof/stern but decent older brother from him based on what I assumed was one of his lines in the launch trailer, so that was a fun surprise.

Zones 1 and 2, first visit

Urqopacha absolutely blows Kozama’uka out of the water for me, but I think both zones do a pretty good job with their first of two feats.

I started with Kozama’uka. The HanuHanu felt straightforward enough, and their feat set Koana up really nicely for what exactly his views are. I was glad to hear that he and Wuk Lamat were on friendly terms right before we left Tulliyollal to start the rite. One of my first thoughts when seeing how he and Wuk Lamat both handled the feat was, “He’s not going to win the rite, but I want him to either be advisor to his sister or for her to invite him to rule together.”

Bakool Ja Ja was fine as the zone’s antagonist, the writers did a good job of setting up his rivalry with Wuk Lamat in the intro so I wasn’t surprised by him trying to cheat his way through things. Wuk Evu was also…um. Not my favorite. I wasn’t super into the “behead me for being rude to the Third Promise” joke being reused over and over and over again…but maybe that’s just me.

As I said, Urqopacha was by far my favorite intro zone for the views, the music, and the overall aetshetic. I really love FF10, so getting to spend so much time with the Pelupelu was excellent. I also loved the zone music and this part really was what got me hooked on this expansion. Working with Mablu to make trades for the saddle was such a great showcase of what exactly the player character is to Wuk Lamat, and really solidified how much I enjoyed her. She is SUCH an orange cat (meaning she is “no thoughts, head empty” in a lot of ways but also just impulsive and can be unpredictable) and I mean that in a very kind way.

This was also where we got to see so much more of what Zoraal Ja’s whole deal was, and once I spent more time hearing him speak I totally understood why Wuk Lamat didn’t want him to be Dawnservant. Also, Mablu is the best and my roommate/best friend who is the biggest FF10/FF10-2 fan I know cried when she saw Tobli (since he’s from 10-2 himself) and the music is so good. So yeah, 10/10 zone.

Zones 1 and 2, second visit, and First Trial

Jumping ahead a teeny bit (since you go back to the capital between these visits). I liked this second set of feats overall! It felt like we were finally making some good progress with Krile’s goals to find out more about the city of gold in addition to moving forward with the rite. I also liked jumping right back into zones we’d already seen instead of waiting for 5+ levels to go back.

I liked how the Moblin feat incorporated the Elezen goldsmith from the boat, and seeing once again just how charismatic and magnetic a personality Wuk Lamat is. Her ability to show so much empathy for people is absolutely her biggest strength, and her desire to understand things--something those helping her with the rite have helped her discover--really start to shine, at least for me. That’s what makes her such a great fit for Dawnservant.

Koana also really was a star in this zone, and I really adore his character archetype and the love he so clearly has for his sister. Working together to rescue Wuk Lamat after Bakool Ja Ja snatches her was a nice change of pace from what we’d had so far from the rite, and that was when my initial impression of what would happen with Koana gained a bit more strength behind it. I was about 90% certain at this point that he wouldn’t win, but would stay at Wuk Lamat’s side to help guide her when she needed it.

I LOVED seeing the Yok Huy and honestly just getting to go back to Urqopacha was a delight. It felt like SO much progress was being made for both the rite and Krile’s goals, and the dungeon was excellent. No notes.

As a quick aside, though, I loved that we got to hear the Yok Huy’s take on death--that those who have died will always live in our memory, and so long as that memory remains, they are not truly gone. I loved this because it fits so well with the lore I have for Rowan regarding the way the Echo manifests for him, and how he cherishes the memories of people he’s lost but has come to move on with his own life. It just…is a very good thing to nail home some of FF14’s broader conversations about remembering and honoring the past, but still turning your focus to the future.

I have gripes with the Valigarmanda trial (I wiped twice on Duty Support :( ) but I appreciated that Wuk Lamat, Koana, and Zoraal Ja ALL came together for the good of their nation. I also liked that Zoraal Ja was cooperating because people dying because Valigarmanda would be bad for his own goals in the end if he won the rite, and also it’s good to see more of him before Things Happen (™).

Zone 3

Basically from here on out I loved every zone.

As a person who loves food and specifically enjoys making food for others, the feat in Iq Braax was a delight. Given that we find out the clan’s leader is Wuk Lamat’s father, it is VERY fitting that the people of the village are much more on the nose about not directly helping the team-up between Wuk Lamat and Koana. In addition, the cooperation between the Second and Third Promises was very clearly there to show 1. how well they work together and 2. what it is that Koana still has to learn, which he very much does by the end of the zone.

I’ve seen in the Disc Horse (™) around DT that Bakool Ja Ja turn in the second half of the zone was weird, but I don’t think it was, not really. By the end of the instanced duty after the X’braal feat, he’s a humiliated mess. Seeing the added context for why the Mamool Ja are the way that they are in the second half of the zone and learning the true cost of the blessed siblings among them, you actually have a reason to offer empathy to a person whose whole life has probably not been great. Wuk Lamat putting aside her anger with Bakool Ja Ja to truly help his people is yet more proof of the things that truly make her a good leader and why she really is the best choice to be Gulool Ja Ja’s heir.

The end of Koana’s arc here is excellent. Wuk Lamat reaching out to him when she needs help finding a way for the Mamool Ja to find ways to thrive outside of the blessed siblings--knowing that he can succeed in an area that is not her forte--is yet MORE proof of her ability to see the best in others and understand their worth. And Koana is genuinely a great brother and partner to work with for her, as his generally calm demeanor evens out her boisterousness very well. The instanced fight against the shade of their father where both groups come together was EXCELLENT.

The end of the Skydeep Cenote and actually finding the city of gold is such a good way to close out the first half of the expansion. We’re left on more intrigue for what is to come in the second half of the expansion, and this was when I got the deep sense of “Okay. But when is the other shoe gonna drop”.

Midpoint, and thoughts on the first half of the expansion

I was so happy with Wuk Lamat’s coronation, and how she outright asked Koana to join her on the throne. Finding a way to truly be their father’s successors by embodying both reason and resolve works out so well in Tural’s favor in the end.

I think the only somewhat negative thing I can say here is that…I was totally thrown by the song that played when the stone monument was revealed, haha. The song is fine on its own, but it was SO weird for me to hear that it did actually kinda take me out of it. But otherwise this turning point for the latter half of the expansion was good. I wasn’t sure how to feel about MSQ going forward, though, because I was like “Wait, where’s the rest of it?”

In terms of my overall thoughts on the first half of this expansion… It’s very good as a way to decompress following the end of the Hydaelyn and Zodiark saga that ended in 6.0, and even a good way to relax after everything that happens with Zero and the void.

I know there’s a ton of Disc Horse (™) around this expansion, particularly about Wuk Lamat and the rite and how “slow” the first part is. I have two things that come to mind about it all: this isn’t the Shadowbringers or Endwalker of this next story arc. This is the Realm Reborn to the next arc. Things are definitely going to be a bit slow.

In addition…the WOL may not be the protagonist of this particular part of the story, but that doesn’t mean the first half and dealing with the rite is worthless? The WOL knows by now that they were Azem, the Traveler. Remember, the Traveler part of that convocation title? My BFF/roommate Sarria put it best:

“DT really feels like it's back to our "roots" and I mean like AZEM roots. Being The Traveler, visiting new places and meeting new people and learning about places outside of our known bubble. Listening to people's stories and desires and then being asked to help specifically *because* we listened to and learned from the locals. And I for one really really am loving it. The story doesn't have to be about us - just being there means we have a role. (Also the first half of DT isn't supposed to be about us anyway.)”

I find it so funny that people have such a problem with it--and I won’t lie, I do agree that some of it had slow pacing. But like…I don’t know, this really feels in line for what Azem would do. We are Azem now, we have the crystal and everything. We’re not known in this continent because it’s only been 70 years since the world we know made contact with it--to the point of the guy credited with discovering this “New World” IS STILL ALIVE. There is ample reason why your character is not the focus of the first half of the expansion, and it’s so disheartening to see people just…not get that?

It could be that my overall excitement to explore the new zones laid out before us led me to be much more forgiving of this section, but getting to know the people of Yok Tural was such a treat. I can’t wait for NG+ to come around for 7.0 so I get to explore all of this again.

Okay, back to going zone by zone.

Zone 4, part 1

So as someone who knows the Southwest US fairly well this zone was excellent, I loved the vibes. The overworld music is great.

I will say outright here that I’ve kind of been an Erenville disliker since his introduction in EW. He’s been overhyped for a character who up to DT basically had no personality in my eyes, so I was apprehensive about how this zone would go with him as our only companion. But, credit where it’s due, the writers actually got me to come around on him a little with the background we finally get for him. Not entirely, I still have issues with him, but he’s now more well-rounded.

Seeing the railyard workers actually made me cry, specifically seeing Not!Magnus’ wife. I’m so glad that 1: they were included and 2: explicitly shown to be the exact same as the people we know from the first. My roommate Sarria and I joked several times that this was SHB/Trolleys 2 and it was such a delight getting to laugh about it.

The end point for this visit to the zone was excellent. The dread had been building for me the whole time, knowing that something was around the corner, but no idea what. So the dome appearing and then the aftermath in Tulliyollal was anticipated, but about as brutal as I was expecting.

Tulliyollal revisit and Zone 4, part 2

The destruction of Tulliyollal and trying to aid those we could was done well, to me anyway. The devs handled that sort of thing pretty well in EW, so was glad to see it done again just as well.

Then comes the “cat”valry as I’d like to call it. Honestly, the moment I heard G’raha’s voice and heard Eternal Wind, it was like I could finally breathe. I think that’s the point of him and Y’shtola showing up to give you help for the rest of the expansion--they give a sense of release to all the tension and anxiety players might feel after the attack on Tulliyollal. A mini version of what the low-stakes rite of succession is to the story overall. You have to have a release for tension before building it up again, because building tension with no release just doesn’t work.

The truth of what the golden door is threw me for a loop, because I was NOT expecting it. I imagine it’s what people felt when the SHB launch trailer dropped and the truth about Hydaelyn and Zodiark was given--you’re so shocked that it’s a bit much to process. But I liked the revelations about the golden city and Krile and everything.

The revisit to Shaaloani was a delight, and deciding to blow up the train was exactly the kind of crazy I’d expect from the Source version of the trolley guys from Twine. The song that played during the coronation came back and it felt just as cheesy as before, but I think I’d accepted it by this point? I just let it happen even though it doesn’t really work for me.

And the Vanguard dungeon is SO good. I loved the music--honestly Soken popped off this expansion for the most part.

Zone 5/Second Trial

So I love the aesthetic of this zone in general--thank you for giving us FF10’s Thunder Plains properly this time!!!--but there was a zone where I ever felt like the story was loosing me, it was this one. I wasn’t sure what to make of the time bubble nor the regulators, so it took some time for Heritage Found to find its footing for me.

Sphene also was slightly unsettling, in a way? It was hard to put my finger on whether she was sympathetic or playing you, which I guess is the point.

Solution Nine kind of just…added to my sense of confusion. I was a bit lost on it all, and trying to wrap my head around it. It is also way to big and spread out for my tastes…but oh well.

With all the talk of souls, though, I finally understood why all the Void stuff with Zero in the 6.X patches was actually good to spend so much time with, since it was basically a primer for ALL of this stuff in the latter half of DT. So once NG+ is here for Dawntrail, I may actually start with 6.1 and see how it all flows together.

What finally got me back on loving the plot again was seeing baby Gulool Ja and Otis in the other half of the map, where the ruins of Alexandria are. I haven’t even played FF9 myself, only watched a very abridged playthrough, but the way I instantly knew who Otis was a stand in for made me feel so warm and comforted. Steiner is just so goofy and endearing, and Otis is exactly like him.

Was not surprised by Zoraal Ja making his move, but the cutscene for the defense of Tulliyollal was very good. I was surprised by Sphene both in and out of Solution Nine for that instanced duty, and I think here is where I really started to see the parallels between what I know of FF9 and DT. Sphene is Wuk Lamat’s mirror, at least in a way--loving and compassionate and charismatic (because I’d come to like her quite a bit by the point she outright says she was playing you). She exemplifies the extreme end of Wuk Lamat’s desire for peace, and the need to protect and preserve her people.

The fight against Zoraal Ja is a satisfying one. I am not the person to ask to talk about fight design or anything so will leave that to others. But I thought it was good.

Also liked the revelations after the trial, where Sphene turns on you for real. It did feel like downing Vauthry just to have Emet steal the Exarch again, though maybe not in the same way. Similar dramatic stakes, I guess I’m trying to say.

Zone 6, and the Finale

This zone will always have an interesting flavor to it for me, since I use the Living Memory title for personal WOL lore reasons. But the zone is, I think, such an excellent one for what the expansion as a whole is trying to say.

As I mentioned at the beginning, despite its cheerful colors and friendly looking character design, FF9 is a darker story. It deals with death and the existential. The perfect word to sum up FF9, from what I know, is bittersweet. And I think this zone--and in a way both zones and the city that comprise Alexandria--PERFECTLY handles that bittersweet feeling.

The weather is Reminiscence, bathing everything in this beautiful golden color. It’s full of areas referencing FF9--I recognized Alexandria and the Iifa Tree, but each zone is a call back to 9. The music is this soft, comforting piece that just triggered my nostalgia for a game I haven’t even played. Seeing Otis in his prime again, the tour of the Gardens with Cachuia, letting Krile meet her parents and learn her real name--it’s all so bittersweet.

Every time you turn off a terminal, you get that message of how nothing will go back to what it was. And the part of Living Memory that you shut down is then forever less colorful and lively, and there’s no music (at least when you’re there during this part of MSQ). You’re left with silence. We can always remember it like it was before (or use NG+ to bring it back if you were a dummy like me and didn't gpose there before it went away), but it won't ever be the same now.

I took my time in Living Memory before moving from area to area, and did all aether currents and quests as I could/they became available which only happened AFTER the zone was gone for the quests. So I was doing all this in silence. Left alone with my thoughts on it all and trying to understand what the point was.

Sphene is clinging so much to that nostalgia for a time gone by because of her programming, and it’s sad to have to end it. But to me, she is eerily similar to Emet-Selch: she was clinging to the memory of the dead, desperate to bring them back and keep them alive. But in the end, it was only an imitation that would lead to untold amounts of suffering to others.

All of Living Memory reminded me so much of Amaurot. Sphene letting the Endless explore as they pleased was I think a much kinder version of Emet's magic working on Amaurot, but I couldn't help but see the similarity there.

I did cry in this zone, during G’raha’s talk with the player in the gondola and all the interactions Krile had with her parents. And it’s just…sad. You might feel awful about destroying the Endless once you understand them and their ways, but in the end…they’re only memories of people who died long ago. Their lives continuing are coming at the cost of the future for everyone on the Source and the reflections. It just can’t be sustained as Sphene’s realm continues to grow and more and more is needed to keep things running.

Sphene wanted the best for her people, going as far as she did for them. And I like that she is clearly kind but does a lot of bad things out of love for her people, and the desire to preserve them. But in the end, she had to accept why death is an important part of life.

I loved the Alexandria dungeon, and the trial was excellent. I will say that the intermission was maybe a bit long, but I still liked it tremendously. I’m excited to see what the relic has in store for us, and where the new arc of the story will take us.

Overall thoughts

DT has two very distinct sections, and there are parts I think could be refined to maybe make things go smoother overall, but honestly? I am totally willing to overlook those things because I enjoyed myself as much as I did.

DT, to me, managed to deliver on the summer vacation aspect that was so heavily advertised while also keeping with FF14’s larger ideas about hope persisting in even the hardest of times, and why the connections between people are so important. It also continues to show why it is not just important but also good to remember the past fondly, but it is just as important to keep moving forward in the best interests of all people.

I said it in the part about Living Memory and the finale for DT, but Sphene is very similar to Emet-Selch, and while some of the Heritage Found stuff lost me for a bit, the story did hit its mark where it needed to. The ending zone was not what the Tempest or Ultima Thule were, and I’m glad that it’s not. I’m sad that I’ll have to replay on an alt or when we get DT NG+ to take the pictures I wanted there, but that’s the point. You’re supposed to feel a longing for something that you can never truly get back, and that’s one of the best parts about it. You’re left with this bittersweet feeling as you let go of the past, and these people who are long gone.

DT drove home Venat’s point from EW even more for me. To use Ardbert’s words from SHB, “Joy and sorrow walk hand in hand.” There is joy and sorrow all over the place in Tural’s story and in its peoples, and I loved how every minute went even if sometimes it did feel a bit slow. But not everything needs to be so fast paced, either.

And even in the slower-paced parts, the WOL is really embodying the adventurer spirit we’ve returned to. We’re embracing our Azem roots, and travelling to new lands and meeting new people and coming to enjoy their cultures and presence. That sort of thing is what Venat, the previous Azem, loved so much about the world. And getting to understand her sentiments a bit more was excellent.

All in all, while DT has its faults, I 100% think this a great expansion. I’m excited again to see what is to come from this story, when I was apprehensive at best after 6.X patch story.

This may sound kind of dumb, but I don't... really want hw 2 to make the books canon? As someone who had never heard of (and doesn't have an interest in buying and reading) the books until shortly after ruin. The idea that there's extremely plot relevant information that you'll be totally lost without for the game's plot locked away across several books just doesn't sit right with me, mostly cause I've seen other game series decide to not explain things at all under the strange assumption that every player definitely read the books when that definitely isn't the case. Like, I'm begging steel wool to actually explain that stuff in game, even if it's locked behind some secrets, because I shouldn't have to buy and read several 30 dollar books based off a game in order to understand said game's plot.

I just assume that we've already crossed that line because of the mimic being in ruin. I'm not sure if things like the mimic especially or GGY were planned from the beginning and released too early AFTER sb and BEFORE ruin (for the mimics case) because of the last delay of the game, or if they were just written and released when they were.

if the mimic hadn't been canon, I wouldn't even be considering GGY being in a game or it even being canon. but the mimic is at least, so theres a chance GGY will be too. especially because of how many gaps in the story it fills in and how it completes the narrative if you view everything in context of it.

the books being canon and lore hidden behind paywalls sucks, but also it's something early fnaf fans wished for (back when the silver eyes first came out, I remember people hoping it had lore because people wanted any crumbs at that point) so maybe they didnt see anything wrong with it because of that

in my eyes, to give them the benefit of the doubt, SW fnaf games take much longer to make and release than early/clickteam fnaf did. four games over the course of one year back then, because of how light they are, and games farther apart now (HW + dreabear (2019) security breach (2021) ruin + HW2 (2023))

SW era fnaf games are a lot heavier and bigger, and that means longer to release and more time waited in between them. so maybe they made the choice to put lore in books because they couldnt fit EVERYTHING they needed into a game without it taking literal years to cover everything, so they settled for books instead.

but maybe that's just me. this is just a theory anyway and theres no indication it's actually true, just speculation. but hopefully when I say what I said above and that the things in the books they're making canon are actually like, cool things (the mimic and probably ggy) it makes you feel better about the whole thing

RE: Neo Seoul Update

Hey, babe, rather than just answer in the comments, I figured I'd share it here since I have a few people who probably have the same question.

The short answer, @sandiegokpop, is haha, um, no, nothing definite... 🙃 LOL SORRY I AM FAIL.

The longer answer is "kind of"??? By the end of the year for SURE.

So, here's the deal. I made some mistakes when I first published Neo Seoul that I typically don't allow myself to make, but my muse, at the time, got cocky. She thought that because it was all planned in my brain already that it would be easy to get from A to B since it was only four oneshots. She was wrong. >.<

Typically what I do is write the entirety of a novel/multichap before I publish, which is why I can afford to do the weekly updates (PTT took 8 months to write before I even published the first chapter, and STS took over a year). I did not do that with Neo Seoul, hence all your suffering, I'm so sorry. 🤦‍♀️

Also, I am usually writing a half dozen things simultaneously so the muse stays entertained and does not leave me. I did a word count tally a few weeks ago, and I'm at well over 650k of MX smut... WTF IS WRONG WITH ME LOL. 🥴

So as I finish up the final installment for NS, I promise to keep entertaining you. I have a mammoth HW oneshot due out in the next couple of days, several October oneshots that I'm pushing for my spoopy series again this year, a Ki xmas exes-to-lovers fic, and a Kyun multichap and a HW multichap that we won't see until next year no doubt (plus, several other pretty far-along pieces that haven't even been discussed and could drop at any point the muse sees fit).

Like a real ding dong, I took that writing hiatus for a couple of months, and it super duper set me back in my scheduling. >.< It's never the plots that take me so long to write so much as it is the smut itself. I try my absolute best to make each experience feel fresh and unique to the characters, but that takes soooooooooooo much time omfg. I never want to bore y'all! I like to be different as much as I just like to explore because I want to have a little something for everyone.

I think some people just like to see that your blog doesn’t sit there leaning towards any one narrative but at the same time, you clearly understand that something about this whole situation is remiss.

Thinking logically, it’s actually pretty easy to pick one side. The side that takes things as they see it. “Real, because that’s what they said and we’re going to believe them.”

So I’ll be honest, sometimes I see those blogs give their points and it does make sense. It doesn’t make much sense to go through hoops and claim that what they’re doing is fake and manipulating a narrative, because again, why? What’s the endgame to do this?

But then you take a step back and you look at the situation again, and it’s very easy to pinpoint all the plot holes. And then you realize, perhaps looking at it logically doesn’t work here because it’s not supposed to make sense. This is Hollywood after all.

Why would a veteran actor who’s gotten Oscar’s for his films with his other veteran actor bff need to marry an actress singer diva after they already broke up and married other people? (IYKYK) Why would he need MORE publicity? Well…

Why would the renowned pop princess of this generation who’s famous for writing songs about her exes need to have a new bf that’s a famous football player and bring the NFL into this whole charade? Does she really need MORE attention? Or does he? (Did he sign with a top HW talent agency and is now venturing into the world of acting by chance or…)

I think for many people who leans towards the middle of things, they see your takes and responses and realize, yeah, you’re right. You’re not screaming PR everything’s fake like your life depends on it but you’re also not blindly accepting true love and that it’s been real the whole time and the fans who aren’t buying it are just delusional haters.

You’re providing a voice for those who just don’t feel something is right about all this and feel there is another shoe that’s waiting to drop. When? Who knows. But hindsight is always 20/20.

The only thing I’d like to mention here is that sincerely, I don’t believe he is attracted to his wife. And it’s weird of me to say this because they married so the logical response would be, of course he’s into her why else would he marry her? But the body language repeatedly seems otherwise. Repeatedly. And these are just the public instances.

So I don’t agree with the narrative that some have claimed he sought her out because he couldn’t date women around his own age anymore. I’ve never liked those accusations because even now, with this person as his alleged partner - if he truly was choosing her because he liked that she was younger and this is what he’s into…his casual body language alone when he’s in public with her shows like he’s been assigned to her for the night. Maybe he’s trying to hide his attraction to her because he’s self conscious about their age difference? But what would be the point of doing that if they’re already married? A little late atp? See what I mean by if you go too deep down a questioning rabbit hole it just raises more questions, which is why the Occam’s razor theory just works better for some. And that’s what I believe one side is doing. They don’t see the point in questioning what’s right in front of them and I don’t fault them for that. But I do think blindly accepting what HW and the media throws at you is why so many seem to lack critical thinking skills now. They believe what’s being fed to them and while marketing does its job right, it becomes so easy to manipulate people into believing what you want because they don’t think to question what’s being fed to them.

Also, she does not seem remotely interested in him either but that was less surprising for a variety of reasons. I just don’t see these two vibing at a Lana del ray concert together - and I don’t see him pretending for her sake.

Of course, they are free to prove me and anyone else wrong. I just don’t think that’s what’s happening here.

thank you, nonnie. all of this is why i say i do not care if they're genuinely together forever or if they never see one another unless it's time to smile for the cameras. it's about what's being shown, how it's being shown, and when it's being shown. there are patterns to all of it... so when it comes to their relationship either way, it's pr. and by definition not private.

what i feel like many of us in fandoms (and i could be very wrong in my assumption) tend to lose the concept that the only people noticing and paying attention to those details you've mentioned are fans. the rest of the population tends to forget celebrities exist until they see a headline about them and far too many people are only going to pay attention if that headline is dramatic.

it's a game where the points don't matter because the prize is your clicks and attention.

The one thing I did do was make more decisions about Important Character Things for the Guidemarks AU. I'm not sure how spoilery it's going to be because I'm basically just setting up the world and characters and then writing the entire plot more or less unplanned, but here we go.

I love the Koholint Angst just as much as everyone else, but someone (I don't remember who) once made a post about what if Legend wanted to live in a dream instead of the real world. Kind of like that guy from The Matrix that teams up with the machines and betrays Morpheus and Neo. So Marin's not exactly... dead in my AU, but she also doesn't have a physical body and can only communicate with Legend right now. Normally, when he's asleep, he's just dreaming about her unless something can overpower that ability.

Side Note: Since Marin does technically have free will (it's my AU, I get to decide which philosophical theories are canonically correct) I need to decide what her Big Moment of Self-Determination is for her guidemark. It's probably going to be the Windfish, but I'm not sure because I haven't played the game and the wiki's summary of the plot isn't exactly a good character analysis.

The other Important Character Thing I've decided is that Time and Mask are going to be two different people.

Mask is dead, and tragically didn't survive past his first quest. He's a ghost that's kind of just been around since then, haunting the area he died before eventually moving on to haunt the hero(es) that stepped up in his place.

Time finished all the quests and physically grew up to be a real teenager/young adult. He's the one who actually knows Warriors and was involved in the events of HW, and has the Teenage Angst.

Am I hoping to be mean to Warriors with this? Yes. I think I would like to have a bit of plot where Mask at least tries to possess Time for a while because he's jealous that Time got to have a family, and he didn't after he left the Kokiri. Warriors figures out that something is up, and the big ghost reveal is all emotional because the ghost of what looks like his little brother is literally standing right in front of him.

One - People randomly killing each other? No one knows who? Henry is enjoying the chaos and just going to sit back and observe. The way humans work is fascinating to him. He is in a comfortable place but since being free from the lab he is always keen to observe.

Anyone who might need him. He is going to try to solve it but the magic is blocking his mind of who the murderers are.

Cleo Mckinnon - She is going full survival mode, she will not be a victim of anyone and going to find her whole family. A woman on a mission. She is not to be messed with. She will also be wanting to stay close to Thor to make sure he is okay.

She will also be immediately checking in on Randy, Tatum, Sidney, Sam, Tara and Dewey to make sure they are alright.

Ok I need to hit Lucy up as I’ve been lurking too long and listening to opinions and she seems very sensible about all this in comparison to other Tumblrs who have lost the plot. So my questions are this:

Do you think the Twitter/IG who wrote this fan letter (Team13) is actually HIS people? That person said they were upset at all the trolling they were getting, yet pinned their post on Twitter. That makes no sense and his father (if it’s him) still follows that account. It’s got to be his people and if it is, how low can you get to turn on your fandom like that? But it’s a bit more than that and shows immaturity at best.

PDA. I think we didn’t get that as from Evans standpoint, it gets more criticism so a pap walk is enough (in their minds) to stop tongues wagging?

I think there’s something huge at play here and the fandom have been spot on thus far. Clearly ‘Likes’ and ‘follows’ meant something from him on accounts although some were saying get a grip. It’s a wonder why her? Has she got something on him? Yes I believe she does. The way he let go of her hand after he believed filming of pap walk/photographs taken etc were done was like, “There. I think many have missed the point. It’s not just about the fact he’s dating this woman younger than him but by doing so, it proved to the world who he was as a person a walking, breathing lie in every interview he did. He had us all fooled. It’s like being scammed. He still hasn’t worked out that this is the real reason many are upset. This last year we were feeling sorry for him. 2) I don't really understand what you meant with this question? But either way about the pap walk, I think it was a way to seal the whole thing. He gave graphic evidence of him actually dating Alba (the way most fans reacted when the People article dropped 🙄 and they 100% know People is totally reliable). Most probably they were caught at some point (and exchanged the pap walk with those other pics), or maybe they got really serious sometime last month and chose to stop hiding: released the article, did the papwalk and controlled the narrative before it'd get leaked or exposed.

3) Loads of bullshit. We saw what happened in 1 second after the papwalk, but he's literally been around her lowkey for more than a year. Let's stop acting for once like this man is a fucking victim every single time.
