Dead fishy names are inspired by 457's story Finding In-ho, I thought they had such a great idea. Also it's just a really sad, beautiful inhun fic so if you haven't checked it out, you should!!

I'm also going to thank @iludusyouxo because I'm pretty sure reading the first chapter of Freshwater Enchantment somehow made me obsessed with In-ho's goldfish 😂 (also inhun, but I guess I'm just there for the fish content jk)

So, we're going to talk about the Wager! And oh my god for once it's a bit angsty (see I do write things other than crack about goldfish).

The Wager is a canon divergent story set in season 1 of the show, where In-ho never became the Frontman, but gets sucked back into the games anyway with the S1 crew!

Five years after surviving the 28th games, only to return to his life in ruins, In-ho is just trying to move on. He cooks meals for his elderly mother, lets Jun-ho drag him to bars with his friends, and concentrates on his work as a detective.

A chance encounter with a gambling addict and a familiar business card, however, threatens to bring everything crumbling down once again. In a bid to stop more people from dying, In-ho reaches out to the creator of the games who'd once tried to recruit him all those years ago. The devil offers him a deal.

Now, In-ho is left with a terrible choice: leave the past behind, or throw himself back into the games that nearly destroyed him once before.

I just need everyone to listen though, because I thought more about it and a goldfish is the perfect embodiment of In-ho's soul 👀

Arguably, one of In-ho’s main reasons for becoming frontman in the show is the weight that he carries from the deaths of his wife and child. It may not be his only reason, but I think that feeling of failure heavily contributes to why he has such a pessimistic view of humanity and why he believes joining the games is his only way to “fix” things. Given this, guilt is a major motivating force for In-ho’s character.

So where do the goldfish fit into this?

In season 1 episode 2, Jun-ho searches In-ho’s dormitory, where he finds the business card for the games. This scene also gives us a view of In-ho’s other belongings, including a fishbowl, which is home to two very sad, dead goldfish. 

In another deleted scene, we see In-ho return to his dormitory. It’s not super clear whether this takes place before season 1 or after, but In-ho enters the dorm and deposits two goldfish into the bowl, watching them swim around.

By letting the goldfish die while he’s away at the games, they become a reminder of the loss he suffered after surviving in 2015. Additionally, if we interpret the deleted scene as In-ho repeatedly buying goldfish only for them to die, then the goldfish become a symbol for the cycle of trauma that In-ho has trapped himself in.

While in the show, the goldfish might be representative of In-ho’s grief, in general, goldfish are a sign of prosperity, but also perseverance and endurance. On the opposite end of the spectrum, dead goldfish are indicators of an end to a certain phase in life, or the need for transformation and new beginnings. In both cases, the comparisons here are pretty straight across– in one, In-ho became the victor and a survivor of the games, and also gained wealth through the prize money. In the other, obviously, In-ho’s not dead, but we could argue that witnessing so much death and returning to the death of a loved one represented a significant turning point in his life, leading him to start a new life at the head of the games. 

And if none of those things convince you, now I’m going to shoehorn in a bunch of random facts about goldfish!

Did you know that goldfish naturally exhibit schooling behaviour and easily socialize with other goldfish?

Did you know that goldfish are incredibly perceptive, and are able to pick up even small changes in their environments? (Also as a fellow left-handed person this is legit one of my fav scenes lol)

Did you know that when goldfish are left in dark areas for long periods of time, they begin to turn gray?

In conclusion, Hwang In-ho is a goldfish- confirmed ✅
