Bordin Marsinkul draws Basho at Japan Town SF 2025

I've run into Bordin Marsinkul yet again! A friend and I were checking out the Cherry Blossom Festival at Japan Town in San Francisco, and the mini art mart was open that day! Since Bordin had a table in Japan Town, I commissioned him to draw my Japanese dragon OC Basho, and once again Bordin let me film. I really like his fast drawing and ink smearing techniques with his Olo markers. I now have my own pack of Olo markers, so maybe sometime on Twitch I'll try my own "hyper drawing" on stream!

ARTIST RESEARCH: Hyperdrawing: Beyond the Lines of Contemporary Art Book

Following my formative assessment with Sarah, she suggested that I look at the ‘Hyperdrawing’ book in response to the trace element of my practice. I picked out some artists of interest which I felt were the most relevant to my project, these are shown below. 

Catherine Bertola

Catherine Bertola explores ideas surrounding existence in the context of history and memory (Contemporary Art Society. 2015). She works with dust, glue and interior buildings to create installations and drawings which refer to notions of human trace; transforming something which is so often goes unnoticed into something of significance. Bertola’s use of objects which infer trace to a certain context within the past bears strong similarity to my work insofar as my attempt to signify my own past within present context.

John Court

John Court is a performance artist who often uses drawing and writing as a medium. He creates pieces that use continuous movement through the means of mark making, utilising each mark and word as an “an individual concept in art” (Court, John. 2008). For his piece ‘ART TRA’, he visualised certain words and then wrote them down using his opposite writing hand. This form of personal process through the means of continuous action holds similarity in terms of my own ideas surrounding ‘in the moment’ process and continuous line drawing.
