Heyy,
You’ve been making me think, what if Hydra was messing with the supernatural stuff? Cos I mean red skull knew about some Norse stuff right? The tesseract and that. Like maybe they tried to summon a demon/deity of Slavic mythology or something as I can imagine them having a powerful being would sound like a nice idea for them.
And if it worked maybe Bucky was unfortunate to be there while it happens, maybe it was an accident or they used him as a vessel. As I guess he’s kinda like an empty shell in a way, what with being wiped a lot, but anyway I’m babbling. He gets taken over, maybe sharing a body with it( maybe the fuse? After sometime) but over time it’s apparent that it’s becoming harder to control him so they cryo-freeze him…
What supernatural being do you think would be best? Or something
Also! I love all your work it’s made me really like looking at all the other mythology’s! Hope for the best ❤️🙈
OMG Anon! What a fantastic question!
It would make sense for Hydra to be into some supernatural shenanigans, and I love the idea of them using the dear Winter Solider as the host. You could have so much fun working that all together, and there'd be a lot of different ways to frame the story.
As for the mythology… I think it would depend on what you were trying to do with the plot/what Hydra was trying to achieve. There are a few things that I always use for Bucky, but I linked them to parallels to Bucky/the Winter Solider; I didn't approach it from a goal-orientated Hydra POV.
So to me, step 1 would be to identify what Hydra was thinking when doing this. What did they want to achieve? And how good are they at this supernatural stuff? Are they sort of bumbling, and thus it would be an achievement to get some household spirit/demon or are they good enough to be god-summoning?
That's how I would go about it. Lay down solid foundations for the basic premise and then build from there. It'll also help with the research process because you'll know what you're looking for.
But, for some starting points for you:
Viy – Overall badass; can kill people with a single look.
Zmey Gorynych – 3-headed dragon – could be interesting for the whole 'Hydra' concept.
Beda – a female demon, but she's got some cool plague vibes and lots of creepy torturing.
For something a little different… One thing that has always fascinated me is the idea of General Winter. It's not so much ancient mythology as a modern, urban take on the idea that wars fought in Russia during the winter always go badly for the attackers. Because of that, they look at the element of winter as a personified army commander. You could tack that onto a God of Winter (there are many; it would depend on if you were going broad Slavic, more locally specified, pre/post-Christianity, etc.). It would give you a very 'American Gods' feel, and while I did something similar with Wind Will Carry Us, you could spin that concept in so many ways. Especially if you did keep it modern-day, canon-divergence, etc. OMG, I love this idea…
This is a good doco-style video on the whole General Winter idea: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q3Qm99tT9OY
I hope this helped and gave you some inspiration! And my ask box is always open if you have any other questions or need someone to bounce ideas around with 😉

Come, and sit by the fire. Allow me to introduce my origins...
I awoke covered in various sticky substances as I crawled from my egg. And though my eyes were open, the darkness that surrounded me proved me wrong, disoriented as the setting invoked a deep sense of confusion and loneliness; and as my eyes adjusted, there erupted a hot flash of fire from behind me. I was but a whelp, a young hatchling with no guidance in this world; my world. In her fury, my matriarch coronated as me the pounding sounds of her foot steps walked towards me so that I may be coddled within her arms.
The echoing creeks of the cave whistled in my pointed, scaled ears as she picked me up by my waist and cradled me. I did not struggle, nor did I put up a fight. 'Is this my mother, my creator?' I thought, I did not know this goddess, but I felt a sense of belonging within her embrace. She glided gracefully towards the entrance of the cave, beating the air with her wings as the wings on my back drooped behind me.
The light at the end of the tunnel becoming brighter and brighter as she stood among creatures who resembled me shouted and cheered. She held me high above as I watched below, each one of them spouting fire from their mouths. In this moment I knew that I was their future, and their past. Once their cheers were over all in unison they fell to their knees and bowed their heads.
"Reign..." They all whispered through their red and orange colored snouts, all beating their wings. "Reign!" My mother belted, shooting me up into the air with her arms. I felt as though my heart dropped into my belly as I whipped into the air.
Was this my end? Was I not wanted? Why would she throw me into the atmosphere? Without warning, my tiny drooping wings flapped into the air and carried me effortlessly just above my queen. The anxiety from my birth and celebration invoked a deep sense of pride within me as they praised, I belted out a sharp wisp of fire from my mouth into the air. The red moon's light beating down upon our kingdom- illuminating the holes and caves that scattered our land. And from that moment on, I knew that I was hailed.
Years passed and as I grew to be a young matriarch the stories of my people's ongoing battle with the Leviathan flooded my view of the world. We were taught that the Leviathan were not to be spoken to, that they were lesser beings. Nothing more than over-sized eels that plagued our oceans. We were taught so deeply to hate the race of water dragons that dwelled below the salty waters.
One day, while my mother entertained our army I slipped away after an argument that I had with my betrothed- Leo. Leo and I were set to be married though I did not love him. I had no romantic views towards this beast, and the more I protested this dilemma to the counsel, the more they fought back. Little did I know, Leo had eavesdropped the entire conversation.
I flew into the night, soaring and seeking space and time to think. What was I to do? I was powerless in this entirely. I wondered so far into the night in such a fury that the sounds of waves lapping the beach hadn't even caught my attention. I landed near a rock, in what I thought at the time was just a lake. My cries bellowing into the atmosphere under the white moon.
A slithering hiss caught me off guard, "Hhhhelloo..." The slippery voice cooed. I stood on alert at this, knowing that at any point my life could be taken from me so far from my homelands. "Stand down." I commanded with roar. Though whomever this voice came from, persisted.
"Whhhyy musssst you cry?" It's poisonous tongue slithered flickering in every which direction as it slipped into my view. His tall slender teal and green body glistened underneath the nightlight. My wings perked as he neared, He was beautiful, tempting even though I dared not to let my guard down- yet.
"State your name." I persisted. My firey eyes glaring into his deep blue orbs. The eel like dragon paused, a sense of fear slipping through his lips. "...Jade." A Leviathan. I knew just by his name. "Beeee at eaassee-" He spoke, sensing my realization. His voice caressed my ears, singing to me like a siren as I had no choice.
I felt my body relaxing against my will, my wings dropped from flight position. "What do you want, eel?" I disrespectfully hissed . "Your trussst." He cooed back coming into full view. I pondered for a while before the weight of my dilemma collapsed. I gave into him, weeping to him all of my issues as if I were under his spell.
We spoke that night, my view on his people becoming less and less vulgar, I grew close to him that night. And from that night on I visited him in secrecy, our visits became intimate, comforting and soon we became lovers. Through one of our nights I became pregnant. Knowing that I would be exiled because of our consummations I fled.
My people found out, Leo had been stalking me. He spoke on my nightly endeavors to the counsel, but I was determined to bring our child to fruition. War broke at this news, and Jade was beheaded. From this moment on I reside in my cave, my escape and shelter from the war and from my people.
Heartbroken I trudged on, laying our egg. I waited, and waited. Not knowing if our child would ever hatch seeing as she was half-bred.
one night, as the sky turned purple the egg that I guarded began to wriggle and crack.
Our Hydra was born.
