When I made this blog: 2011, and this past year is by far the most active i’ve been on it since like 2013 (if you want to cringe at what tumblr culture was like circa 2012, look in my archive)

What I post: bandom, star wars, the hit cw series s*pernatural when i need to show the mutuals the loud things i do on my sideblog, comic books, unfunny and loud text posts

Last thing I googled: a famous fanfiction based around the show that shall not be named (love how i get progressively cringier as this goes on)

Other blogs: @emonatural (s*pernatural blog that’s indiscernible from my main with how much emo shit i post there...i mean, look at the url) and @villevalos (HIM/mtv’s jackass/y2k blog)

Do I get asks: if i reblog one of those ask things, yeah! oh!! and sometimes people send me asks about gerard out of nowhere, and it’s very sweet :’)

Why I chose my url: oh this is embarrassing...once again, cringier by the second. so in 2015, i did an internship at d*sney world, and when i came back from it, i was really bummed out and missing it, so i made my url smileandasong, which is actually a song from snow white and the seven dwarfs, oooof. and then eventually, i took on smile as my online pseud, and idk, it just sort of stuck! and even if d*sney is the the worst and the ultimate problematic fave, i actually do like the url because i AM smile and i post about bands, so like, song??? it just works!

am i going to make another playlist breakdown that no one asked for... yes :) for samsteve :)

now - paramore (boy i could talk about this one forever it’s so on the nose of the whole them of it all! their energy is truly captured here!) feels like i'm waking from the dead and everyone's been waiting on me, least now i'll never have to wonder what it's like to sleep a year away / instead, i'd have some memories for the days i don't feel anything, at the least they will remind me not to make the same mistakes again / there's a time and a place to die and this ain't it

Oh my 🤦🏻, I’ve never presented myself. Well since I have a complicated French name I go by Mc (my initials and since I like to rap it stuck) and I’m 25. And now you can call me by name 😉🥁 (bad pun)

I think self depreciation is kinda big for all pop/mainstream, isn’t it? You might know the directioners better than me tho, but it’s more than alright to like what we like. They do have good music and good voices too! Also people really underestimate the role pop music can have in our development. What are your favorite songs you sometimes to back to? About paramore, for a pessimistic I’m pretty optimistic : it’s from their ‘early years’ so it’s definitely more on the rock side. Have you listened to hard times, for example ? It’s more pop and catchy. Although I think you would like better Hayley Williams solo album she dropped this year. It’s more indie and raw and fresh in a way. (I don’t listen to the regrettes but after a few songs all I can say is that the voice is what is the most different from paramore. Because it has a similar vibe in the music otherwise)

I see! Then I hope your mid terms go smoothly! How is it going for you tho? Do you have online classes or is it on campus? And for exams how does that goes? Yeah it’s a mess here and honestly even if I’m not as big of a fan of theaters you seems to be (I don’t top that energy) I’m the kind of person who loves to go watch a movie alone in theaters. I miss that kind of alone time.

I was just applying for a topliner job (people who come up with singing melodies and lyrics sometimes) because there was an offer. It’s not what I’m the most comfortable with in music production but I tried anyway 🤷🏻 you got nothing if you try nothing, right?

Also I have another random question! I don’t think you already got asked this before but : what is your favorite ghibli? And also do you have a preference between animation and live action? And why? Since you didn’t choose acting as your favorite aspect of films, I wondered if you can find colors and image composition as important and captivating than in movies?

omg yeah, i totally think so too! honestly the whole pop culture just has a tendency of self depreciation and i think in some way it also links with youngsters’ insecurity and people’s belief that liking pop music/culture is immature. it’s really toxic but at the same time unfortunately has become a habit to us all🧍‍♂️ anyway one of my favorite 1d song to go back to is definitely something great (i often forgot about that one and i remember last year during their 10 year anniversary i revisited it and loved it so much) i’ve listened to hard times before! (without noticing it’s their song lol) i liked it! (it’s so fun) and i will definitely check out the new album you mention, seem like right up my alley💖

this semester is going quite well for me i think! it’s still really busy for me but i can still manage it (thank god i didn’t get the internship though lmao or else i would probably be completely swamped. a blessing in disguise <3) our classes are all on campus right now because the covid situation is relatively chill in taiwan. (that’s why we can still go to the movies and sometimes even concerts) tbh same, i watched most films at home but sometimes it’s nice to go to the cinema (especially film festival where i can get access to films that i cannot watch online)

my favorite ghibli film is actually ponyo. it’s not a popular choice but i love it with all my heart (honestly i feel like you can learn a lot about a person with their favorite studio ghibli film. like i think in some way ponyo reflect my personality the most, if you know what i mean) what’s yours? i don’t really have a preference i think (i don’t really watch animation or live action that much) but if i have to choose i would probably go for animation! (mainly bc there can be so much more artistic/creative choices through the creation of animation while i feel like live action often strives for realism) and to your last question, yeah! i personally don’t consider acting to be as important as the visual aspect in films (like i’m more likely to watch a film for how it was shot than to see the actor’s performance)

Dumpweed Chapter 5

I woke up the next morning, sprawled out on Mark's bed. I went to lazily wrap my arm around Mark, only to find that he wasn't there. I sat up and took a moment to look around, just in case Mark was in the room, only to see that he wasn't. "Mark!? Where are you?!" I called out, earning no response from him. Worried, I wrapped myself in the thick duvet to go and look for him, finding a note on top of the dressing table.

Good morning, Ivory. I hope that you slept well. I have had to run some errands and sort some tour stuff. Feel free to help yourself to whatever is in the kitchen and make yourself at home. I will see you when I'm done. Mark xx

I felt my heart flutter at the note. He was so sweet, even when he wasn't around. I dropped the blanket onto Mark's bed and walked my naked self into his ensuite bathroom. Yes, I needed a shower. While waiting for the shower to heat up, I saw my reflection in the mirror. Mark had left hickies along my neck and chest. I smiled at the memory of last night and got under the shower.

It was now the afternoon, and I was happily dancing to myself with music blaring in my headphones. I had decided to make some blueberry muffins. I was so into the music and had almost jumped out of my skin when Mark came up and took an earbud out of my ear. Mark laughed out loud, giving me a moment to pause my music. "So, I was saying that whatever you are making smells great." He chuckled, pulling me in by the head and kissing me on the forehead. I wrapped my arm around his waist and rested my head on his chest. "Thank you, doesn't smell as good as you though." I chuckled. Mark laughed and held my shoulders at arms length. "You smell better though, if I must say so." He smiled. "I am just going to pretend that what you said wasn't creepy at all." I joked. "You started it." Mark joked, smiling at me. "So, would you like to come on tour with us?" He asked. "I know we've just met and all, but I'd like to be able to hang out with you some more." He admitted. Everything inside me was telling me that I should go, but I had work and my life here that needed my attention. "What would I do about work though?" I asked. "You are a graphic designer. Surely, you could get a laptop and bring your work with you?" Mark suggested. "Plus, you could become blink-182's graphic designer!" He said excitedly. "I dunno Mark. It's a lot to think about." I sighed. Mark looked down at me with a defeated face. "We leave in a week, so you have time to decide." He smiled. "I know that we would both love it." He whispered before pulling me into a kiss. "I do need some time." I replied, kissing Mark on the cheek. "But I should be getting home." I finished off.

After hours of stalling with Mark (no, not that sort of stalling), I was finally home. Ruby was visiting. "Come on, Ivory. You should go!" She shouted excitedly. "I want to go, Ruby. I really do. But what about my job here?" I asked. "I can't expect you to take my work load as well as your own." I explained. "You do realize that you own your business, right? You can do whatever the hell you like." She replied. I inwardly laughed at her answer. "Are you sure you'll be OK though? I don't want to leave you on your own." I asked. Ruby looked like she was getting a little bit annoyed at my paranoia. "You're going, Ivory. You'll love it and I'll be fine back here." She assured. "Alright, alright. I'll go then." I laughed. "Like you should. When do you leave?" Ruby asked. "I have another week, so plenty of time to get things in tip top shape before I leave." I replied. "I better tell Mark that I will be going." "I will see you tomorrow. I have some 2IC stuff that I need to take care of." Ruby smiled before exiting my home.

Just about as soon as Ruby left, I quickly dialled Mark's number. "Hello Ivory, do you already miss me?" Mark asked. "Yes, I guess I have." I replied. "I have made my decision about the tour by the way." I finished off. "Aaaand...what may that be?" He asked. "Did you decide that my good looks and charm were enough to get you to come along?" He asked. "I guess they were, because I'm coming with ya." I replied. I swore that I could feel Mark smiling through the phone at me. "Well, that's good. I will try to look after you." He said softly.

Suddenly, I felt a knock at the door. "Hey, Mark. I have to go. There's someone here." I said. "Alright. I'll see you when I see you." He said softly. We both said our quick goodbyes as I went to answer the door. I opened the door to see no one other than Brendon Urie standing at my door. "Hey, Brendon! What's up?" I asked, confused at how the hell he'd know where I lived. I don't remember even giving him my address. "Nothing at all, I just heard that you're set to embark on a big tour." He smiled. "And thought that it'd be worth partying for." He finished, pulling the full crate of beer up. "What? A party of like two people?" I teased. "No, there will be others on the way soon." He replied. "Oh, Where's your stereo?" He asked. I pointed him in the direction of my stereo.

My home was soon packed with famous rockstars. Everyone from Green Day to All Time Low were here. Even Matt and Travis were here. "Hey, Matt. Where's Mark?" I asked. Matt looked at me and shrugged his shoulders nonchalantly. "I dunno. He did say that he may be a little late." He replied. "By the way, you have a nice home." He complimented my house. "Thanks. It ain't much but it's something. Plus, I bought it with my own money." I replied. "That makes it even better." Matt smiled, patting my shoulder. Just as I walked away, I heard the doorbell go off again. I answered the door to see who looked like to be Hayley Williams from Paramore at the door. "Hey, Brendon told me about a party here." She smiled. "Uhh yeaah, sure. Come on in." I said, trying to suppress my disappointment. Yes, Hayley was cool but I was kinda waiting on Mark to show up. "Hey, are you alright?" She asked, putting her hand on my shoulder. "Yes, I'm fine. Just waiting on Mark." I replied. Just as I said that, I saw Mark walking up my driveway. "Hey, Ivory! I made it. So sorry for being late." He called out. "That's ok, I'm just glad you came." I replied, wrapping my arms around him. Mark pulled me in tighter, then leaned in to kiss me. "Oh, and I hope you don't mind that I asked Brendon to throw you a party." He spoke softly, kissing me again. "Should we go in, I'm cold." I turned around to see Hayley standing. "You can go in." I smiled before turning back to Mark.

I woke up the next morning with a killer headache. Mark was laying next to me, softly snoring. I looked us over and we were both surprisingly both fully clothed. I got up and left Mark to sleep. Everyone else was in the lounge, sleeping wherever they could find room for themselves. Hayley was the next one awake. "Oh, good morning Ivory." She spoke in her usual cheery tone. "Thanks for letting me join the party last night, it was fun." She spoke warmly. "You're welcome. But it really should be Brendon you're thanking. I didn't even know there was going to be a party until he got here." I admitted. Hayley laughed out loud. "Well, if Brendon is throwing parties at your place, I think you'd be considered his friend." She smiled. "Yeah, I guess you're right." I replied. "So, I never go to ask. Are you and Mark a thing?" She asked. "I dunno. We hooked up a few weeks ago and started a friends with benefits thing." I replied. "Are you sure? Cause from where I was standing, you seemed like lovers." She teased, "Damn, were we that obvious?" I asked, blushing hard. "Don't worry. I think it's kinda cute." She smiled. "Mark's a cool guy. And you seem cool too."

Mark was the next to rise. "I know, he's a good guy." He smiled, walking up to me and wrapping his arm around me. "Good morning. Did you sleep well?" I asked. "I had the best sleep I've hand in a while." He replied, kissing me on the forehead. "Hayley, is it ok if I steal my girl away for a bit?" He asked, turning to look at Hayley as if he was almost begging her. " "Off you two go then." She replied, smiling. "Oh, and Ivory, I'll make sure everything is clean and tidy by the time you're back." She smiled.

ALBUM REVIEW: Hayley Williams — Petals For Armor

“I came close to stifling my creative process because I didn’t want to live up to those expectations of what it looks like when a female leaves a band and makes a project on her own,” Hayley Williams of Paramore shared with the New York Times. With production insight and moral guidance from fellow bandmate Taylor York, Williams shared a story only she can tell: Petals For Armor. This album, which is her first solo release outside of Paramore, radiates a unique cycle of loss and love and acoustic noise, first simmering with rage and fear and then gracefully freeing itself from the past.

In the opening track “Simmer,” she runs away hastily, as her own fears chase her through Tennessean woods. The bassline presses forward and she expresses how rage manifests itself, with slow-burning verses: “Rage is a quiet thing / Ooh, you think you’ve tamed it / But it’s just lying in wait / Rage, is it in our veins? / Feel it in my face when / When I least expect it.” “Simmer” compounds the singer’s perennial thoughts and vexations “born out of a generational trauma,” compiling them into a pulsating memory that quietly collects all the pieces.

The anger in “Simmer” partly derives from her feeling belittled by the 2000s emo scene and experiencing misogyny firsthand. But with time and grace, she ultimately sings “wrap yourself in petals for armor,” a mantra that controls her grudges and finds comfort within femininity. “Being a woman in the music industry is not often a conversation I love to have. It’s just my existence.”

Likewise, she enlists Mike Weiss from the post-hardcore band mewithoutYou on the fourth track “Creepin’.” The song interprets part of reality as vampiric — the kind that sucks out all the energy and joy that’s been built up.

But by using writing as her therapy, she’s able to cast her worries away and sing about “Cinnamon,” an “ode to my home,” a literal safehouse that percussively sways as it continues to evolve: “I’m not lonely, baby, I am free / Mmm, finally.”

Unlike “Cinnamon,” and the homebody approach to healing, “Leave It Alone” and “Dead Horse” harbor distinct moods and approach divorce in two separate ways. The second tracklisting “Leave It Alone” spatially slows, unrushing drums and vocals to only spiral into itself and cocoon, struggling to branch outside all of the grief: “It tastes so bitter on my tongue / The truth’s a killer / But I can’t leave it alone.” In contrast, the intro in the catchy groove “Dead Horse” tries to “rid myself of the shame,” by revealing her deep guilt for being “the other woman”: “Alright, it took me three days to send you this, but / Uh, sorry, I was in a depression / But I’m trying to come out of it now.”

Part of growing from trauma is also having subtle jolts of desire — those fixations on immediate wants. At first, Williams felt “comfortable with the idea of being single, but when I was waking up to new desires and feeling like, ‘Oh s--t, I may be jumping back in…’ it excited me. And it scared me, too.” “Sudden Desire” ranges in softness and loudness, exploring the singer’s initial feelings and wants in the wake of her own evolution.

A lot of her power, too, comes from seeking outside support. “My Friend” attributes her close friend Brian O’Connor, where she shares the value of having someone on your side, all through life’s ups and downs. In the chorus, she sings, “My friend, when the blood has dried / My friend, instant alibi / You’ve seen my from every side / Still down for the ride / Ooh, my friend, you know why.”

Williams knows that she’s not alone in all of this, and that idea also transcends in “Roses/Lotus/Violet/Iris,” an immersive ballad that highlights harmonies from boygenius, using a garden to feel empowered when diving deep into her feminine roots. Similarly, “Over Yet” continues to process everything and seek closure, proactively believing that there’s another side to “resistance.”

“Why We Ever” is the record’s rite of passage. Reverb guitar reaches an all-time calm, disconnecting her from the past with its intimate instrumentals and wise words: “And now I / Can’t seem to remember why / We ever / Felt we had to say goodbye.”

“Pure Love,” “Taken,” and “Sugar on the Rim” follow, each song upbeat and untangled from worries. “Pure Love” unfolds a jazz sequence, embracing the strange tango between love and togetherness: “I give a little, you give a little / We get a little sentimental.” Likewise, Williams assures that she’s “Taken,” a playful epilogue to her romantic tale. “Sugar on the Rim,” the most deviant track from the collection, experiments with love as aromatic, a bittersweet thing, just like Crusta cocktails: “Do you taste old shame when you lick my wounds? / ‘Cause I feel redeemed in spite of you.”

The outros, “Watch Me While I Bloom” and “Crystal Clear,” spark rejuvenation. Using her same floral motif, the cheerful dance “Watch Me While I Bloom” translates to “feeling biologically connected to myself again…” The slow, ethereal “Crystal Clear” intertwines boxy reverb with delicate harmonies, as Williams moves forward, unscathed: “Crystal clear / I won’t give in to the fear.”

Hayley Williams’ journey through grief and loss and then love is a powerful listening experience, especially when heard in her own words and narratives. That’s why there’s great depth to this record. Petals For Armor is her own intimate collection of meditative ballads, introspective diction, and reinvented sounds that mirror her life’s journey. It took years of struggle to let this all unfold. The outcome? Profound.

Music I Liked in 2021

Every year I reflect on the pop culture I enjoyed and put it in some sort of order.

I never claim to speak to general trends in music, as it’s such a subjective artform with such a large number of releases that has become even more niche over the past decade. My indie/alt-rock leaning taste is my taste and I connected with a number of records from old favorites and newer discoveries alike and I definitely recommend all of them. This is also one of those years where ranking them feels especially arbitrary; rather than do that, I split them into three tiers.

As a brief aside, in 2021 CD sales increased for the first time in over a decade; now, it’s possible this increase is solely attributable to TSwift and Adele, however, the main point is that physical media is still viable in the age of streaming. If you want to support artists, maybe considering canceling your streaming subscription and purchasing albums instead. CDs are much more affordable than vinyl, can be produced more efficiently and are more profitable for artists, just sayin.’ (At the very least consider buying digital albums via Bandcamp which has much greater benefits to an artist than streaming; why “lease” songs when you can “own” the files in perpetuity?)

Tier 3: Worth A Listen

Dayglow – Harmony House

The sophomore release from Austin-based Sloan Struble is a little more yacht-rock inflected than the bedroom synth pop of his debut, but it’s still a lot of fun. Seeing he and his band perform guitar-based music to a sea of receptive youth at Lollapalooza this summer was a real treat; the kids are alright!

Grouplove – This Is This

Grouplove released a surprise quarantine record at the beginning of the year and I was surprised to find I enjoy it a lot more than 2020’s more polished Healer. It may be a little clunky lyrically (see “Shake That Ass”) but its quasi-embarrassing qualities are so earnest they quickly become endearing – and the hooks are undeniable. Just a fun little under-the-radar rock album.

Hayley Williams – FLOWERS for VASES / descansos

Speaking of quarantine records, Paramore frontwoman Hayley Williams also delivered a surprise one last year on the heels of her 2020 solo debut. FLOWERS… is more stripped down than Petals for Armor, but contains beautifully intimate songcraft that complements that prior record very nicely.

Jon Foreman – Departures and Switchfoot – interrobang

Jon Foreman had a busy year, dropping both a new solo record as well as one with his band. While I can’t say these are my favorite albums from either project, they are both solid and the best moments on each would certainly comprise a strong top-5 album of the year contender.

Lord Huron – Long Lost

I am a big fan of Lord Huron but they have always been pastiche artists and never more so than on their latest record, which recalls bygone country and folk troubadours broadcasting from remote radio stations. This one is more pretty than memorable, but at the very least it provides some lovely background atmosphere.

Tier 2: Appointment Listening

Eddie Vedder, Glen Hansard, Cat Power and Olivia Vedder – Flag Day Original Soundtrack

I have not seen the Sean Penn film Flag Day, but critical consensus is that it’s not great. Its soundtrack, however, is terrific, featuring original material from the artists above. The Glen Hansard tracks are his best since his Swell Season output, in my opinion, and the vocals from Eddie Vedder’s daughter Olivia are a pleasant discovery.

Julien Baker – Little Oblivions

On her latest album, Julien Baker opens up her sound, adding full band instrumentation (performed almost entirely by herself on-record!) but remaining as lyrically raw as ever. Little Oblivions is an eviscerating document of her substance abuse and its effect on her relationships with others, culminating in the devastating “Ziptie” where she questions whether her mistakes are enough to cause even God to give up on her completely.

Manchester Orchestra – The Million Masks of God

Another blast of introspective and propulsive melodic rock, Manchester Orchestra’s latest deals with themes of grief, faith and purpose. Driving lead single “Bed Head” is a song of the year contender for me.

Modest Mouse – The Golden Casket

I honestly wasn’t expecting to connect much with a new Modest Mouse record but The Golden Casket surprised me with both its upbeat catchiness and occasional (albeit still caustic) optimism. This is one I kept returning to not only during the sunny summer months of its release but throughout the rest of the year as well.

Sufjan Stevens & Angelo De Augustine – A Beginner’s Mind

Sufjan Stevens began 2021 with a multi-album suite of instrumental electronic recordings, which would be enough for most artists, but in September he released this folksy acoustic-leaning collaboration with fellow singer-songwriter Angelo De Augustine. Inspired by a series of random movies the two watched together on a songwriting retreat – from Point Break to Night of the Living Dead – the songs are interesting a number of levels but are still captivating even without knowledge of the source material.

Tier 1: Highest Recommendation

Big Red Machine – How Long Do You Think It’s Gonna Last?

Although I’ve never really gotten into Bon Iver, I find Justin Vernon’s work with the National’s Aaron Dessner and others very compelling. This latest record from the duo’s Big Red Machine project features a stellar cast of collaborators including Taylor Swift, Anaïs Mitchell, Robin Pecknold, Ben Howard and more, who bring an almost mixtape-like feeling to the proceedings yet with more thematic coherence than that classification sometimes implies.

CHVRCHES – Screen Violence

The latest release from Scotland’s CHVRCHES finds frontwoman Lauren Mayberry interrogating social media’s malicious impact on individuals, specifically women, through the metaphor of a horror film. The result is some of the most urgent, effective and flat-out catchy music the band has released yet, with nods to 80s synth pop including a pitch-perfect appearance from the Cure’s Robert Smith.

Geographer – Down and Out in the Garden of Earthly Delights

In 2019, following a couple LPs that I didn’t really connect with, Michael Deni released the New Jersey EP which quickly became one of my favorites of that year. Down and Out… continues this winning streak with a collection of fantastic new synth pop jams that still allow his haunting falsetto to shine. It’s rare for a 15-track record (20, if you include the B-sides packaged with it) to be as consistent and engaging the whole way through as this one is. Perhaps my favorite album of the year.

Japanese Breakfast – Jubilee

“Paprika,” the opening track on Michelle Zauner’s third album, begins quietly with some discordant instrumentation that quickly gives way to a joyfully upbeat rush of melody, layered vocals and even a horn section, and never loses steam from there. The record is a beautiful and fun piece of dream pop, at various moments recalling not only that microgenre’s progenitors but also the lush atmosphere of a Won Kar-wai film or smoky neon haze of Destroyer’s Kaputt.

The Killers – Pressure Machine

The Killers continue their unexpected mid-career resurgence with Pressure Machine, following 2020’s excellent Imploding the Mirage. I had thought I only wanted larger-than-life, arena-ready bombast from the band and was skeptical of a more stripped down, storytelling focus, yet here Brandon Flowers & Co are with one of the year’s best records. Recalling the small Nevada community of his youth, Flowers sketches portraits of both specific individuals and the American West at large with a deft touch that shines an empathetic light on the “quiet towns” often overlooked in today’s discourse.

my birthday is in november!! november 23 to be specific. i share it with miley cyrus which is something i always found to be very cool when i was growing up and watching hannah montana. it also means i am a sagittarius and funny little fact i realized is that my best friend is a gemini. alex and jack are also a sagittarius and a gemini. from being 13 i know that tyler and josh from twenty one pilots are also a sagittarius and a gemini. something about sagittarius and gemini besties idk.

also yeah!! ao3 year in review!! it's a bit complicated to figure out at first and if you read a lot the finding pages thing can be pretty tedious, but it's def worth it once you figure it out. it gives you a lot of different stats about everything you read and it's pretty cool. now i am going to go look at your fics to remember my favs. you deserve the praise so i am willing to offer it. jeez you write a lot i respect the motivation sm. you write quite a bit of angst and i won't lie i try to stay away from angst so i haven't read your fics that seem super angst-y based on the tags. BUT there are still so many i recall reading and loving nonetheless. on a quick scroll-through: i usually don't read high school AUs but "paint me in trust (i'll be your best friend)" was super adorable and lovely. "thank god i'm yours" is one of my favs iirc. also i love love love "it's not always easy (but i'm here forever)" like yes please romanticize alex gaskarth i love it sm. "i won't be silent (and i won't let go)" and "i fell asleep in a city that doesn't" are both super fluffy and romantic and are favs of mine. in case you haven't picked up on it i adore very fluffy and romantic fics lmao. alright i am continuing to scroll and there are so many more i could list that i love but this section is getting quite long. just know if it's about a kitchen or hotel rooms being for lovers i probably read it and adored it and that pov is so valid.

waterparks!! will not lie i only really started listening to them about 6 months ago having been distantly aware of their existence for several years by being a fan of bands in the same genre. listen as long as you let yourself be vaguely annoyed by awsten is prevents you from being in love with him. follow him on any social media platform for like a day and you'll be sick of him typing in nothing but all caps within hours. simply do not romanticize him and you can keep yourself from falling!! so this is coming from a slightly fake parx fan, but some of my favs by them have been peach (lobotomy), crave, numb, fuzzy, violet!, you'd be paranoid too, and lowkey as hell. that is a very songs-from-their-most-recent-album-heavy rec, but whatever. i did give the disclaimer about being a fake parx fan.

yeah hayley does have 2 solo albums now!! petals for armor and flowers for vases / descansos. pfa is the one i didn't really like upon first listen but has grown on me. i haven't even listened to the second one in its entirety oops but we won't mention it. dead horse is good but simmer (pretty sure that was the other single??) just ain't it for me. the album has some lovely songs but it's just a hit or miss album all the way through. some favs of mine on it include pure love, taken, crystal clear, watch me while i bloom, and why we ever. it's sorta a storyline album about healing if that adds anything to it?? but anyways. i started listening to paramore around the time after laughter dropped and it grew to be one of my fav albums in existence. idle worship is probably one of my fav songs like ever. i def understand being slightly put off by bands with songs that make religious references (me with twenty one pilots' earlier music that makes a lot more religious references considering i'm not religious whatsoever) but i think i am blinded by being in love with hayley williams and just ignore it. idk that she's like super religious?? she's addressed believing in god and stuff a few times but she's def not the "rub it in your face" type and if she's making refs in music more recently then they're subtle enough i'm not noticing them. ik albums like brand new eyes had a lot more because it was shortly after that the band split and the songwriting process was essentially her and ex-bandmate co-songwriter arguing about their religious beliefs (turns out he ended up being super homophobic and transphobic all based on his religion so do with that what u will and thank the clown for leaving). i feel u on the "i meant to start listening to them" because that's essentially how i started listening to them. i told myself i was going to and then finally forced myself to do it. fuck falling for awsten knight what's more risky is falling in love with hayley </3

also yeah!! you've articulated my feelings towards tde. every song is so vastly different that it's hard to like it all. #1 fan is pretty decent though, and that's not just my bias about finding both ross and his gf hot and a cute couple and getting to see them together and ross half naked in a mirror in the video nope not at all. he's my fav himbo!! he has no personality!! no thoughts head empty!! i still love him and his strawberry-growing saga on twitter tho <3 the hazard of being in love with ross lynch since i was 12. girlfriend better be a fucking banger and there's quite a few already released singles in the tracklist so i have hope. i believe my show is in chicago on november 19 which is a thursday. kinda sucks since i intentionally bought the chicago tix nearly two years ago (the show was originally supposed to be april 25 2020. lol.) because the show was on a saturday and i have to drive 3 hours to get there. obviously i can't speak for them as tde but r5 shows always fucking slapped and i can vouch for them (realized i haven't seem them live since 2016?? 5 YEARS?? wtf) so if u genuinely like them. would recommend going to see them.

as a former tøp stan myself can i say quite firmly that they’re definitely emo, but we need to re-evaluate what emo actually means, bc like in terms of the 00’s emo music? no, they’re not emo. they’re not like the emo trinity (lol), BUT they’re the perfect description of a modern emo band? so, no tøp isn’t emo in the old fashioned way, but yes they’re emo in a newer context,, and their stans are definitely emo i mean like come on

oh the music will always live on with me, but how i think and express myself around the subject “being alternative/emo/pop-rock/whatever” will probably change as i grow into another phase of my life,, and like i’m okay with the thought of living my life in phases, and i’ll probably not be too ashamed of my current self a few years from now

sigh i listened to both the trinity and the quartet a lot in 2018, i was a big fan of this whole trinity/quarter thing, but now do i just occasionally listen to some of them, but they’re definitely the roots of my emo path in this life

ooh idkhow are both emo/alt/pop-rock and quite new!! i forgot them earlier in this post! ye i love idkhow and their music, but i don’t really listen to waterparks or palaye royale

red+black or pastel colors, i shift a lot based on mood, but my go to color schemes are dark blue and black bc i’m always comfortable in them

42. What's your opinion on Paramore? Green Day? Blink-182?

well my biggest obsession right now is paramore so in short; i absolutely am in love with hayley, taylor and zac, the whole concept of paramore and of course their music+other content, even though they’ve gone through rough (or should i say hard) times

and i’ve listened some to green day, they’re really great and i like them, but there’s too much to get into and i’m not ready to be that much of a huge green day stan yet (will probably never be either) but i can absolutely casually enjoy their music and jam with their songs, without having to get into it any deeper

and for blink-182, i feel like they’re a bit too far away from my preferred genre right now, i will maybe listen to them in the future, probably not, but you never know anything for sure

so that’s all,, i love answering questions like this even though no one will ever read it and i’m cringe i know alright but it makes me feel happy so i’ll keep doing it
