5 tips to boost 5 days of Productivity
We all love to procrastinate and most of us (including myself) have made sport out of this, but is this how we really should be approaching things?
The answer is NO.... apparently
So join me in my self evaluation of bringing you 5 tips how I avoided procrastination by being a bit lazy.
Being productive for a whole week when you have too much on your plate but you spend your entire weekend scrolling through social media... well me too :)
Though Mondays suck, its a brand NEW week so we can't let Mondays win and ruin out entire week right?
Tip 1 - Preparation before the week start
- Make a to do list - For the next day or the week
A short list of your most prioritised tasks e.g. starting that essay you been avoiding, even if it just picking the ttile
Make sure to not put too much pressure on these tasks
Keep it simple
DO NOT put too many things, be realistic only add things you know you can achieve
Little ramble on how this helped me :)
We all have those sleepless nights, especially when you have a 9am lecture/class the next day. Somehow you end up going to sleep at 4am still make it to your lecture on time, though the rush might be exciting this is not the way to start the week because your mind will get used to this so much and this becomes your normal routine.
Not going to lie, I am super guilty of this but I found out this not only drains my energy, it strips me away from my motivation and make me lazy all the time.
So one bazzare night I thought to myself what would I potentially want to do this coming week, so I got my phone started typing my "potential" to do list for the week, okay the list was quite long and seemed quite overwhelming, and I knew I wouldn't do all of this so though I made the list I didn't put too much pressure on this. When I checked back in the middle of the week I did most of the things on the do to list unconsiously. This was so surprising I never get things done.... what changed ?
Most of the time we put too much pressure ourself, that's why we procrastinate and they avoid the things we need to do. The minute the pressure is gone you get the urge to do your things even if you are unaware of it.
Tip 2 - Follow today's work TODAY
- Follow the lecture and make notes while you're attending the lecture
Take brief notes on what's on the slides
If the lecturer give extra info add those especially
DO NOT panic if you don't write everything on the slide, remember these are brief notes to for later revision
Speed is not important, what's important is that you have something written on the paper
when the lecture/class is finished fill in the gaps you left during it, do this right after while you still have the energy.
one page = one lecture (unless the lecture is 90 slides then its bit tricky)
Little ramble on how this helped me :)
I personally find it very hard to keep on top of things, especially with how different lecturers have different methods and speed with delivering their content. I tried many methods, recording the lectures, printing the slides, handwriting everything but it only made me bored of the things I was learning.
I can't stare at pages and pages of writing when I'm trying to revise, so best way for me to do this is if I have one page or two for the entire lecture. This helped me a lot of condense my notes, motivated me to keep writing and I felt accomplished by the end of every lecture.
Tip 3 - Keep one book for all your modules
- Invest in a chunky subject divider notebook
This is where you write the notes form the previous tip
One book to take to all your lectures, don't have to carry five or more
Write all the assignment and exams for that subject in the dividers (Kinda like a self-reminder)
Keep a general section where you write extra information that relates to the subjects (e.g. extra seminars, extra activity sessions, groups project notes, your own research for subjects, assignment preparation etc. )
Little ramble on how this helped me :)
Most of my detailed notes are digitalised, this is way easier then writing hours and hours of detailed notes by hand. But all the modules, lectures, practicals are separated so it's too much of hassle to find what I want when I want to have a quick glance at something.
Dividing the book by subject and seeing different content I am going to need regularly being on one place really is therapeutic for me, give me less stress so I don't have to spend time looking through pages of notes to find just one sentence.
Having one book for all my modules, helped me so much to keep on motivated to write notes and keep on top of it and when I revisit it, it's so pleasing to the eye.
Tip 4 - Write flashcards on the day
- Put little bit of extra into a flashcard
Once you finished a lecture, read back and pick the most key bits and write a maximum three sentences
Keep it very very brief
Think of pictograms for some words. e.g. little blog with stokes for a virus or a spark for electricity
Some info you can't fit on your page put it on the flashcard, like a diagram or a table
Little ramble on how this helped me :)
I am a sucker for flashcards, seeing them makes me so happy to revise. But making them when an exam is near is frustrating so if you make them before by the time you get your exam season you already have flashcards to revise from. How convenient!
Tip 5 - Write a sentence or research a bit everyday for your assignments
- Every time you feel like you done nothing today take a look assignment and write sentence - Take this step by step everyday and add information along the way
Pick a title first for whatever your assignment is
Do basic research on the title you chose
Do a basic plan
Improve on the basic research
Add information to the plan
and ect....
Little ramble on how this helped me :)
Doing assignments is tricky, very boring, they can be very long and stressful so we avoid even starting it until the day before it's due. Okay, we all work well under pressure but we don't really produce our best work under a day so investing little time everyday or every other helped me to produce more quality work than normal and it was less pressuring and stressful when I started the binge writing on two three days before the deadline, because all the research, preparation is done all I had to do was write and improve my work along the way.
I actually cannot recommend this enough because it saved me from a lot of breakdowns over my assignments. Just by adding something to it every now and then I basically finished my first draft by the time I actually want to start to write properly.
Bonus tip - Take the weekend off! - > If you're like me and get bored very easily with doing the work then follow these tips for the days you have school or uni, finish everything by Friday and take the whole weekend of .... TRUST ME you will be much more prepared for Monday.
Thank you so much ya'll for reading this, I do ramble a lot but it's a part of me that I embrace so I hope this was helpful for you and make sure to tell me your thoughts and feelings.
Till next time Lovelies x

sorry to bother again but i am a freshman in college and i am v stressed
how did you get through it and how do I make myself not want to drop every single class i’m in every semester
how does one take more than 5 classes at a time
i am in midterm hell and i am Scared™️
oh you mean, ‘Matt, please do your actual literal job on main?’ Because this is sort of my actual literal job, friend. So don’t worry. I’ve got you.
So first thing’s first, when planning future semesters:
I would recommend against taking more than 5 classes at a time. Mathematically, it is not great for you. If you have to take more than 5, plan on doing 1-2 to during summer school. You won’t be behind. You’re fine. I swear.
Example for future class planning: For every class, look at the number of units/credits it is. That is around the number of hours that you’re gonna spend in that class a week. Now multiply that by 2. That’s about the number of hours total you’re gonna spend on that class in a week (both in class and doing homework).
That means that a 3 unit/credit class = 6 hours of work per week.
You have five of those classes. That means that you’re doing around 30hrs of school work a week. If you have six of those classes, you’re practically working a fulltime job with little to no pay and benefits.
End story: Do not take more than 5 classes a semester if you can help it.
If you can, don’t take more than 4 classes in your major per semester, either. You will die. Use electives and general education classes as your fourth or fifth class to lighten your load and give yourself something that you enjoy and know you can pass for sure. That will give you some breathing room and will help you maintain your GPA.
Coping with Overload now:
At this point in the semester, it’s a little late to be dropping classes, so what you’re going to do instead is to schedule the fuck out of your time.
You need to pick and stick to set dates/times for completing coursework and midterm projects for the next week or two. People do this in different ways, but generally speaking, people will assign projects/homework to certain days.
Example: Monday is Chemistry homework night because assignments are due on Wednesday. You only work on Chemistry on Monday. You finish the assignment and turn it in.
Tuesday is English homework day because assignments are papers and take 3 days to complete due to requiring 3 different steps: research, outlining, and writing. You do the whole researching process on Tuesday and do a basic outline. You will fill out the outline a little more on Wednesday and will then write the whole paper on Thursday so that you can turn it in then, before the Friday deadline.
On Wednesday, after you’re satisfied with your English outline, you will set that aside because Wednesdays are Math days. You will do the Math homework and/or study for 2-3 hours until your brain feels like soup. Then you will stop, do something relaxing for 30min, and then decide if you need to do more studying. If you do, repeat the study + self-care process. Go to sleep at a reasonable hour (before 2am if possible)
Do the same thing for your other 2 classes, assigning each a day and a specific task or set of tasks to complete on each day. Don’t give yourself more than 3 tasks per class/study session, because that’s how you get overwhelmed and into an anxiety spiral.
Apply self-care (breaks, snacks, drinks, music) liberally while doing assignments.
Other tips: figure out how you study.
If you study best in a group, grab some folks from your class and form a study group. If you are in STEM especially, it is expected that you will form study groups. This is how studying happens in STEM, medical, and law fields. It is nigh impossible to do all that labor on your own. Yes, I am serious. Make a study group, even if that’s you and 1 other person.
If you can find a study guide, take it to study group or block out an hour or two and do the whole thing. If you don’t have a study guide, make one yourself out of your homework/assignments and test yourself with flashcards or writing out definitions and forcing yourself to explain the different parts of cycles you learned in class.
If you are in a humanities/liberal arts major, you need to figure out if you study best by reviewing your notes, by re-listening to the lectures, by explaining concepts to others, or by writing it all out as if it was an essay.
If you need to write an essay and are stuck with where to start, reach out for help from a tutor if your school has one, or just start by doing 15 minutes of brainstorming to figure out what you feel about the topic and what evidence/ideas would work to answer it. Pick apart the prompt to see what it is truly asking you to do, write out the components of the prompt separately on a separate page and start answering those question as if they were short answers.
Then when you’ve got that, you can start noting bits of evidence to add to support your points and BAM, just like that, you’ve got an outline. Write a thesis statement at the top that addresses the Who, What, Why and How You’re Going to Prove it of your essay and you’re ready to go.
Example thesis statement: “The world represented in Oh God, How do I Study by Matt Deniigiq includes references to time management, course planning, and big-picture thinking to emphasize the broader theme that this one shit semester is not going to destroy student’s lives. This is evident in the droll humor used throughout the piece and the fact that the author keeps halting in paragraphs to answer emails from frazzled students.”
**yes, your thesis can be 2 sentences long. It’s allowed, I promise.
Know that these 5 classes will not end your life.
Honestly, like, speaking as someone who does this for a living, at public schools anything higher than a C is grand. It’s not usually required for you to list your GPA on job apps later on (I’ve never been asked). No one actually cares about your GPA in social situations.
As long as my students have higher than Cs in their classes and they aren’t like, nursing students, I’m cool with their progress, so give yourself a break if you can.
Also know that getting a low grade in 1 class as a freshmen doesn’t actually fuck up your GPA as bad as you think it will. Like, there’s a lot of complicated shit around this that I could go into, but generally speaking, if you fail one class (and I mean FAIL-fail it. Fs and D-s. None of this ‘UwU I got a C so I failed’), then by the time you’re a junior or a senior, if you haven’t failed additional shit, that F/D- is barely going to shift your GPA.
Like, we’re talking .1 shifts around then. Maybe a .3 shift if you’re at the end of your sophomore year. That’s the diff between a 2.5 and a 2.4. Or a 3.3 and a 3.0. You can make that up almost entirely by taking another round of classes and getting As and Bs (again, the mechanics are complicated, so you’re just gonna have to take my word here).
So yeah, shoot for Cs or higher and know that these classes aren’t the end-all be-alls of your lives.
(For context, if I get a student with a 3.0 or higher, I’m fucking ELATED. I’m not even joking. Y’all will be fine.)
--
Start with these tips and get back to me if you want something more specific. I do this all day, every day.

ALL MY ASSIGNMENTS are due tomorrow (monday going into tues) night by midnight!
Starting at 6pm last night I worked until about midnight. this morning i started around 10 am; I finished up last night’s essay and accompanying hw and turned it in. i *just* finished and turned in my second essay. I now have 1 essay.. and a movie script to write!!
yikes!
I’m super proud of how much I’ve been getting done and certainly surprised myself with finishing essay 2 as quickly as I did. (dont worry theyre only like 3-5 pages each)
Honestly, I’m beginning to wonder if I’m just truly incapable of starting the actual/final writing process of any essay or project until 36 hours before its due? because I have bee stressed and minimally productive for weeks, but now?? Like fuck yea I’m writing a whole movie tomorrow - it’s gotta be done so it will be!

That Damned Universe - Chapter 2
Chapter 1
AO3
Cyrus woke to his alarm, going off at exactly 5:55 am, as it always had- Cyrus was sure it always would. He rolled over with a sigh, sitting up in bed as he slammed his alarm off. Shoving his covers off, he looked around. It took a moment to readjust to his surroundings- right. Lincoln Academy. Cyrus glanced at his roommate's bed, only to find it already empty. TJ had made it before he left, bedding pulled into place without a wrinkle. Cyrus grabbed his uniform, stepping into the bathroom to change. At first, he fumbled about with his dark red tie but later got it, moving on to his hair. Checking his watch, he found that he had an hour and 3 minutes until his first class. He deemed it just enough time to go to breakfast and check his textbooks out from the library. Cyrus grabbed his bag and his phone, texting his parents good morning before calling Andi. "Hey, Cyrus!" she greeted. "Hey, I'm on my way down. You ready for breakfast?" Cyrus asked, holding his phone between his ear and his shoulder so he could lock the door. "Yes! We're starving," Andi replied dramatically. Cyrus chuckled, hanging up as he jogged downstairs. His knuckles had barely made contact with their door when it swung open, revealing Andi and Buffy. They were both wearing their uniforms; white button-down shirts and gray cardigans. The cardigans, of course, had the red Lincoln Academy motto embroidered into them. This paired well with their gray and red plaid skirts, and red ties. "Well don't you two look darling," Cyrus teased, gesturing his head towards the staircase. "Don't make fun, this outfit is bad enough as it is," Buffy chided, locking their door, and jogging after them. "I know, I know. I'm not particularly fond of wearing a blazer every day." "No one is, Cy," Andi said, pushing the doors out of the dorm open. The trio crossed the lawn towards Carver Hall. They each swiped their meal cards at the doors and stepping inside. Hundreds of students filled the expansive cafeteria, their voices overlapping to create a loud buzzing in the room. "What are we feeling today?" Cyrus asked, looking around at the food. "Lots of coffee, I hope," Buffy joked, leading them to the drinks. They each poured a cup of coffee, turning around to survey the cafeteria. "How about cereal?" Cyrus offered, gesturing to the cereal bar. "Good enough," Andi shrugged. "I'm too nervous to eat much anyway." The group wove through the students milling about, each pouring an identical bowl of cereal- Rice Krispies and Cap'n Crunch with 2% milk. They found a table in the corner, sitting down and digging in, watching the cliques form around them. Cyrus caught the eye of TJ, sitting across the cafeteria with his friends. The corner of TJ's mouth pulled into a slight smile before he turned back to the conversation he was having. Cyrus blushed, looking down to his cereal and pushing it around his bowl with the back of his spoon. "Who's that?" Andi asked, nudging Cyrus. "Oh, that's my roommate," Cyrus waved her off as Buffy glanced up to find TJ looking over his shoulder at Cyrus. "What's he like?" "Um, has a twin sister- Amber. She seems nice, but she's a ninth grader; long story. From LA, plays basketball, likes cats better than dogs..." He paused, thinking. "Um, and hates the universe." "Bowie would disapprove," Andi chuckled. "Is he nice?" "I think so," Cyrus said. "I can't decide if he's nice, a little odd, or a serial killer yet." "Keep us posted," Buffy said. "So, do you like him?" "Buffy!" "What? he's your type!" Buffy defended. "What's that supposed to mean?!" "Athletic and unobtainable," Andi offered. Cyrus shook his head, swatting them both in the head. "Okay, in hopes of escaping this torment," Cyrus said as he gathered his things, having finished eating. "I'm going to the library to get my books." "Okay, bye!" Andi said, hugging him. "Good luck! See you at lunch?" "Of course," Cyrus promised. "Good luck, you two." He started to walk away, but Buffy's voice stopped him. "Cyrus!" "Yeah?" he asked, turning around. "You nervous?" Cyrus smiled, nodding. "We'll be alright, Buffy." With that, Cyrus turned and left, passing by TJ's table as he did. TJ smiled up at him, and Cyrus felt his heart melting. He turned to look at Buffy and Andi, who were both snickering at him. Cyrus rolled his eyes playfully, putting his dishes away. With that, he walked out of Carver and towards the massive library building behind his dorm. He stepped inside, inhaling the warm scent of books, before walking up to the desk, where a librarian sat. "Hi, I need to check out my textbooks," he said. "Oh, okay!" the librarian- Mrs. Bell, her desk read- said brightly. She turned to her computer. "Last name?" "Goodman." Mrs. Bell typed his last name in, scrolling through a list of names. "First name Cyrus?" "That's me," Cyrus confirmed. Mrs. Bell smiled, clicking on his name and writing the titles of his books on a sheet of paper. "Alright, we have science, English, history, French, and math." She gestured to the first five things on his list. "And your assigned reading for this trimester in English." She pointed to the other two things on the list- To Kill a Mockingbird and Fahrenheit 451. "Okay," Cyrus said, looking over the list. "Bring all those back here and I can check them out to you. Textbooks are on the first and second shelves and assigned reading books are on the third and fourth. Tell me if you can't find something or if one of those isn't in." "Got it," Cyrus said, nodding as he took in the information. "Thank you!" "Of course, it is my job after all." Cyrus smiled and set off into the library to find his books. He managed to hunt them all down with minimal effort, setting the seven books on Mrs. Bell's desk when he got back. "I think I got them all," he said, counting the books he'd set down. "You did! Great job, I couldn't have done that my first day here. You certainly know your way around a library." "Yeah, I'm kind of a book nerd," Cyrus said, rubbing the back of his neck uncomfortably. "I can see that," Mrs. Bell said, gesturing to his overfilled bag. "You know, you'd make a great assistant," she said, clearly deep in thought as she scanned his books. "What do you mean?" "What do you say to a job?" "Working in the library?" Cyrus asked, his eyes widening. "Yeah, why not? Shelf some books, make some money," Mrs. Bell proposed. "You could start today after school. We have a lot of books to shelf at the beginning of the year." "I-I'd love that!" Cyrus exclaimed. "It pays next to nothing, but I think you could have some fun. Be here from 4 to 5:30 on Mondays and Fridays?" "Of course! I'd love to! Only Mondays and Fridays?" "Yeah, we've got lots of students working in here." "Oh, okay! I'd love that!" "Alright then, you're all set. See you at 4," Mrs. Bell said, sliding him the stack of books. "See ya!" Cyrus said, picking up his books and leaving the library, a smile on his face as he climbed the stairs back to his room, leaving his books for his afternoon classes on the desk. He managed to find his way to his first class- American History- without much trouble (of course, he did walk into the wrong building at one point), sitting down in his assigned seat and hanging his bag over the back of his chair. Mr. Marlow walked into the room just as the clock ticked to 8:20. "Hello and welcome to American History!" he exclaimed, leaning against his desk. "I am Mr. Marlow, we are in room 132 in Branford Hall, and now would be a great time to ensure you are in the right class." A collective chuckle spread through the students, but everyone checked their schedules anyway. Three people stood up, rushing out of the room to find another and a few minutes later, four others came in, sitting down at the empty desks around the room. The forty minute class period passed quickly, but finished with a bang when Mr. Marlow assigned them a two-page essay on the first chapter of the textbook, due by 11:59 pm Friday. The day continued similarly. By lunch, he'd accumulated a total of 8 pages of essays in just three of his four morning classes. The only essay he hadn't been assigned an essay in was Science. However, he did have to write a detailed summary of the nebular hypothesis by class tomorrow. He trudged back into Carver hall, dropping his things on their table and sitting next to his best friends. "You okay?" Buffy asked with a chuckle, scribbling in a composition notebook. "So many essays to write," Cyrus grumbled, opening his laptop and history textbook, looking down at it as he typed. "You too?" Andi groaned, crossing out a wrong answer on her math homework. "Yep," Cyrus nodded, not taking his eyes from his screen. "We're pathetic," Buffy said. "Study together at 4?" "Can't," Cyrus responded. "I have library duty tonight." "Cyrus! We've been here for 26 hours and you already have a job!" Andi exclaimed in disbelief. "The librarian liked me!" Cyrus defended. Buffy chuckled, finishing her notes and standing up. "I'm getting lunch, what do you two want?" "Pizza," Cyrus andd Andi responded in unison. "Pepperoni." "...That was terrifying, but I'll be back." Buffy came back a few minutes later, carrying two plates, each piled high with something like 9 slices of pizza. "Bless you," Cyrus said, pulling the top slice off the stack. "Buffy," Andi started, taking a slice. "This is 17 slices of pizza." "I know! And this," Buffy gestured to the general state of their table. "Is a major study coma! We need sustenance!" "And when we inevitably can't finish all of this?" Cyrus asked. "We sneak the rest back to our rooms," Buffy shrugged. "Fair enough," Andi seemed to accept that as a good plan, going back to her math homework. They ended up each bringing three slices of pizza back to their rooms; they wrapped each slice in napkins and put them in their bags. Cyrus dropped the pizza on his desk- he'd have it for dinner instead of deducting points from his meal plan. He quickly changed into his PE uniform, rushing to the gymnasium just in time to stand in a room full of sweaty teenagers and chase after a ball for 40 minutes. Forty minutes later, having gained zero life skills and three bruises, he went back to his room to shower and change, only to find TJ sitting on his bed cross-legged, studying. "Oh, hey," he said, pulling his uniform back out of his dresser. "Free period?" "Yeah, I'm not taking an alternating elective this tri, so I have nothing to do 6th period on A days but study my ass off," TJ chuckled. "You get slammed with homework too?" Cyrus asked sympathetically, crouching to pull a towel out of a lower drawer. "Brutally," TJ confirmed. "I blame the universe." "As you should," Cyrus laughed, crossing the room towards the bathroom. "That damned universe, always getting in the way." With that, he swung the door shut behind him, pushing the lock into place. Ten minutes later, he emerged again, his hair toweled dry, tying his tie around his neck. "That was the fastest shower known to mankind," TJ marveled, watching Cyrus grab his things and throw his PE uniform in his hamper. "Well, I was going for a record," Cyrus joked. "Also, I have psychology in seven minutes." "Psychology?" TJ asked. "Yeah, all four of my parents are therapists. Some things stick, I guess," Cyrus laughed, switching his morning books for his math textbook. "Alright, I gotta go, good luck with the studying thing!" "Good luck with psych," TJ replied, a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. "Thanks, I'll need it," Cyrus called over his shoulder as the door clicked shut behind him. Cyrus was just in time for psychology, earning a very stern look from Mrs. Barnett. "Sorry, won't happen again," he promised, taking a seat in the back of the class and pulling out his psych notebook. He took extensive notes all class to make up for his near tardiness, and ended up filling 5 pages of notes. Luckily, Mrs. Barnett didn't assign them any homework for that night, so Cyrus was left with only four classes of homework, plus inevitably some for geometry. Cyrus, desperately not wanting to relive what happened with 6th period, practically ran to geometry, and ended up getting there 17 minutes early. Looking around, he chose a seat at a table near the back, pulling his things out of his bag. Mrs. Bailey walked in a few moments later, greeting Cyrus and telling him he'd need graph paper today. Cyrus nodded, pulling a folder of graph paper out of his bag. "Hey, Cyrus!" Buffy's voice pulled him from his thoughts as she sat next to him, hugging him hello. Over Buffy's shoulder, Cyrus saw TJ step into the room, and waved at him brightly. TJ looked between Buffy and Cyrus, his brow furrowing, then brushed past Cyrus's table, sitting on the opposite side of the room. "What was that?" Buffy hissed to Cyrus. "I have no idea," Cyrus replied. "Definitely more points in the serial killer column, though," Buffy whispered. "A solid twenty, definitely."

SERIES MASTERLIST | Ch. 2
Word count: 4.5K (short and sweet for now, but we’ll get in some longer chapters soon enough)
A/N: Welcome to my new series! I’m dropping this chapter a lil bit earlier than expected! I’m really excited for this one, and I’ve been cooking it up for a while. This series is going to be split up into two major parts: fall 2018 and spring 2019. This is chapter one of fall 2018! So we’ve got a long story ahead, and lots of character development to come. In the mean time, leave your thoughts. Chapter two of part one will hopefully be out by Monday :-)
Tumblr media
“That’s why I’m standing on the overpass screaming at myself HEY I WANNA GET BETTER!” you sang along loudly in the car, speeding along the street with your best friend Tony in the passenger seat.
You were both on your way back to your apartment complex, enjoying the autumn air as you let your car’s windows stay open just a crack and the tunes of your mutual favorite campus DJ. It was about a month into the semester and the stress was mildly starting to hit you, but you were momentarily celebrating the start of the weekend. For a moment, it felt perfect — a drive, a best friend, and a good song.
“All right everyone that was ‘I Wanna Get Better’ by Bleachers, cos some of the first grades of the semester are coming in and well… it’s not looking too optimistic for us over here in this booth for sure,” the radio host said. You and Tony both chuckled in the car. “I’m afraid we’re about to wrap up. But our good friends Aurora and Quentin are about to take over and you’ll be in good hands. Thanks for tuning into ‘Across the Pond.’ I’m Dutch.”
“And I’m Haz,” the other host said.
“And we’ll see you next week. In the meantime, here’s ‘Learning to Fly’ by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.”
And like that, another song drifted onto the radio, and you and Tony began to relax to the soothing sound of Tom Petty’s voice.
“This is the only radio show I ever listen to,” you commented lightly. “They’re always surprising with their music tastes, but like, never in a bad way.”
Tony nodded his head. “It’s kind of refreshing. Remember when ‘Cum Talk’ had this slot?”
You groaned and rolled your eyes. “Do I ever. I can’t believe they were able to get away with that title.”
“Or their shitty content,” Tony mused. Then suddenly, “Hey are you coming out with Jacob and I tonight?”
You shook your head. “Nah, I’ve got this paper I have to finish.”
Tony frowned. “It’s Friday? Can’t you just save it for the weekend? C’mon dude, there’s gonna be free jello shots!”
You tried not to gag. Though you were always down for a good jello shot, it always inevitably left you incredibly hungover and reeling the next morning.
“Nah, it’s due at midnight because I’m a lameass who didn’t do it earlier in the week. So, I’m gonna head over to Dommo’s tonight and finish it up.”
Tony shook his head. “Whatever, you suck.”
You stuck your tongue out at him and he waved you off. “C’mon, I know it sucks but I’ll go out with you guys next time.”
“You’re our fellow weekend warrior, Y/N! It’s not the same without you!”
You laughed, remembering part of some of the other antics you and your best friends Tony and Jacob had gotten up to over the course of the past few years. It’d been nice to always be one of the boys, taking vodka shots with them at wild house parties and always managing to come back with one crazy story of the night. It was weird to think that in another year or so you’d all be done with college and off in different parts of the world, where you most likely wouldn’t have as much of the fun stories from the weekend to tell as you would have liked.
“It’ll be all right,” you replied. “Why don’t you invite your third roommate instead? It’s always the quiet ones that are the most fun.”
Tony rolled his eyes. “If he ever comes home. I swear I haven’t seen him in about a week.”
You frowned. “Is he okay?”
“Yeah, he’s fine. This guy just has one the busiest and most odd schedules I’ve ever seen. I don’t know. I don’t know too much about him because he’s never home for us to actually get to know him.”
“Well, maybe you should text him and ask him if he wants to come out with you both, then you can get to know him. He sounds cool from what Jacob has told me.” And because you were with Tony, you couldn’t resist throwing in a teasing quip. “And I bet with that busy schedule he’s got some pretty cool friends. We could use more of those around here.”
“Oh shut up,” he said, laughing. “I’m mad you’re not coming out with us though, you gotta come next week for, when we have our first Whine and Wine at the new apartment. We’re going to be griping about our first grades, it’ll be fun.”
Whine and Wines were a tradition in your friend group. The rules were for everyone to bring their own glass and bottle of wine, so everyone could switch around what they were drinking at the party. They were always on a weekday night when things were not incredibly busy for everyone, but it was far enough in the week for everyone to have at least one thing to complain about. While it was always a more calm, laid-back gathering, you enjoyed it, mostly because they got everyone in your friend group to open up with each other. Besides, you didn’t mind all the wine you got to drink.
“I’ll be there for that one for sure. I have a hell of a lot to complain about. Might fuck around and bake a cake too while I’m at it.”
“Oh please get us a cake for the first Whine and Wine. It’s the only good idea I think you’ve ever had.”
You hit him playfully in the arm, and pulled up to his apartment. As he excited you called out, “See you tomorrow loser! Mimosas at mine!”
He turn around and gave you a thumbs up. “That’s not if I’m too fucking drunk from tonight!”
****
Gotta get this done, you’d thought, typing furiously on your computer onto a word document in front of you.
You were slightly aware that everyone in this coffee shop was glancing over at you. You’d been used to your loud-typing inciting some speculative looks whenever you’d study in libraries, but you’d learned to ignore it so much after a while.
This 12-page paper was due by midnight and you didn’t realize earlier exactly how much work you had to put into this thing. It wasn’t the worst assignment you’d ever had; you’d done far longer papers before. But the stress and anxiety was swirling around in your brain and it felt like the end of the world for you.
You already had an annotated bibliography and a rough outline prepped. Now, all that mattered was actually getting it finished.
You were so close to the end, so close to your cut-off point when you’d heard some cheers be incited from upstairs. A group of fellow college students slowly shuffled down the stairs, practically barking at each other.
You should have known that this would happen in Dommo’s of all places. It was a Friday night after all. But this was your favorite coffee shop in town, and yeah, maybe they did have an upstairs bar that could be a little bit distracting at times, but you always came here for the nice, specialty lattés.
You tried to keep your gaze fixated on your screen, blocking out the outside noise.
Of course, the universe didn’t want that for you.
“You all right there?”
You glanced up, catching the gaze of a Dommo’s employee, who had a rag in one hand and an empty coffee mug in the other. You perked up even a little bit more of at the hint of the accent he had. He sounded British.
“Fine, thank you,” you said, allowing yourself to flash him a quick smile.
He nodded his head. “All right, let me know if you need anything. I’m mostly going to be working upstairs now, so if you need any more coffee just let me know.”
He started treading away, back over to the counter to clean up a bit more, and you glanced around, suddenly surprised.
You were the only person left downstairs.
You checked the time. It was still well within Dommo’s hours, so you weren’t intruding by any means. But you couldn’t help suddenly feeling a bit weird and uncomfortable downstairs.
You were frazzled as your eyes returned to your screen. Admittedly, you were a bit jealous of all the people upstairs. You had to mute your notifications earlier when you saw messages from Jacob and Tony, both discussing this house party on the east side of town tonight that they were at. It was mostly Tony teasing you about all the jello shots you were currently missing out on, and you got a nice photo of Jacob pouring out a drink in your honor. While they were shotgunning beer, you were chugging down cups of coffee to keep you fueled.
When you’d finally finished the paper, you practically cheered to yourself. All you needed was someone to do a quick readover to catch any grammatical mistakes you made. Then, you glanced up at the time. It was 11:35 p.m.
Fuck.
You wouldn’t have enough time to find someone who could look over it.
Unless…
“Hey, I know this is a bit weird, but would you mind reading over my paper for me?” you called out to the coffee shop employee that had asked you if you were okay earlier.
He glanced up at you, amusement etched across his face. But he said, “Yeah, sure,” and you quickly scurried over to him with your laptop.
“What’s this for?” he asked, glancing over at you across the counter as you set your laptop in front of him.
“A political science class, just on like, how voter laws are causing issues in states across the country,” you explained.
He nodded his head, his eyes moving along the lines of your own words. He came to a brief pause, then asked you, “Mind if I... ?” His hands were looming over your keyboard, and you understood what he was asking.
“Oh yeah, go ahead, do whatever needs to be done,” you said, waving it off. “It’s due by midnight, though, so I’m in a bit of a rush here.”
He nodded his head, quickly typing to fix whatever mistake he’d noticed at that moment.
For the most part, it continued that way for a few more minutes. You toyed with your cell phone, trying not to make him feel uncomfortable by staring at him. You heard him type on your own computer, your lips curling up a little bit when you realized he was a fellow loud-typer.
He was brisk. Soon enough, he turned his laptop back over to you and said, “I just skimmed over it. Fixed a few things, but for the most part I think you’re good.”
You let a long sigh of relief when you realized you still had about ten minutes left to turn it in. “Oh my god, thank you so much. I’ve been stressing about this thing all day.”
You pulled up your professor’s portal to turn into the paper, feeling victory wash over you as you uploaded the final document. When you got a confirmation message, you cheerily closed your laptop.
“I can’t believe you had to write a 12-page paper already,” the employee remarked. “We’re only about a month into school.”
“It’s a 500-level class,” you moped. “I think that’s why.”
He frowned. “That sucks. I’m sorry. And it sucks that you had to do this on a Friday night too, but at least you can go out with your friends or something now.”
You gave him a soft smile, returning your laptop into your backpack by the back table. “I wish. I think I’m a little bit too burnt for a party though. I’m thinking about just going back home and watching a movie, maybe drinking some wine or something.”
He nodded his head. For a minute, he looked like he was debating something before finally saying, “How ‘bout this? I have some sangria I made earlier today, and I’ll let you have some of it for free. It sounds like you’ve had a long day and could use some of it.”
Your eyebrows peaked with interest. “Can you do that?”
“Yeah, you’re over 21 right?” You nodded your head. “Then, yeah, we’re good. C’mon up. I was pretty much done down here anyway.”
You followed the employee up the stairs to the bar, your backpack slung behind your back. As you entered the upstairs area, you noticed that most of the crowd had settled down, leaving just a few people around in the room. Granted, since it was Friday, this didn’t surprise you. Dommo’s Upstairs brand was all about being a morning cocktail spot and the place you’d go to cry into a peach pale ale during the school week. It was more of a pre-game spot, than an active party spot in town. You figured most of the town at this point in the night was now starting the actual party portion and heading out to all the wild gatherings on the other side of town.
You set yourself up at the bar as the employee who had treated you so kindly went around the corner and prepped a glass of sangria for you.
“I never asked your name,” you commented lightly, accepting the glass of sangria with a grateful smile. “What is it?”
He smiled. “I’m Tom.”
“Y/N,” you introduced, waving slightly. “And you go to college here too?” He nodded his head. “What are you studying?”
“Theater and finance.” You raised an eyebrow and he lightly chuckled. “I know, it’s an odd combination. But I love acting, and finance is just kind of my back-up if nothing quite pans out. What about you?”
“I’m political science and economics. So lots of crying and wishing the best for my prospective career.”
Tom laughed. “Well, I can definitely relate to that. But it seems like you have quite the workload a lot of the time and you’re handling it pretty well, so”
“Dude I deadass just wrote a 12-page paper today due at midnight, I’m the worst at handling it,” you replied, slightly chuckling.
“That’s impressive! I would honestly have gotten flustered up and somehow made this elaborate excuse to turn it in late.”
“Honestly, that might have been a better idea, at least for the sake of enjoying the weekend,” you mused. “See I’m incompetent!” You took a sip of the sangria finally, pleased with its taste. “This is really good. You made this?”
He nodded his head. “It’s my own recipe.”
“Can I have that recipe?”
His eyes glimmered. “M’afraid that’s a secret love.”
“Oh whatever,” you replied in a playful tone. You took another sip. “But anyway, theater and finance. How do you balance that?”
He shook his head. “I also don’t really. But I think since I love acting so much it kind of feels like a nice break from the rest of the craziness that’s involved with finance, you know? Like the math can stress me out that’s associated with finance, but since these two majors are almost what feels like on the opposite side of the spectrum at times, they can kind of alleviate one another.” He shrugged. “I don’t know if that made much sense.”
“No, it did. That’s nice. I’ve never really felt that. Political science and econ I feel like have a lot of the same people most of the time, so even though they’re different majors, it’s just like the same type crowd anyway. And even though I think poli-sci is more liberal arts-esque in a way than economics, they still kind of interweave with one another. I don’t know. It’s weird to explain, but like, just all together it can be annoying.”
“Do you like your major though? It seemed like you were kind of into it when you were slamming on your keyboard down the stairs. ”
You shrugged. “It’s all right. I don’t know. And I was only slamming on my keys because I was in a rush and type loudly to begin with, so I don’t know if that’s the best measurement of my passion for it! Honestly, I would rather do something like creative writing, but… You know, stability is important so I strayed away from it.”
Tom shrugged. “I mean, you’re talking to the guy who is studying theater here soooo.” You laughed. “But why didn’t you do that instead? Or like, at least get a minor in it? Is it your parents or something?”
“Isn’t that always what it is?” You took another sip out of your sangria, still impressed by the taste. You might just down this whole glass and another, then have to walk home instead. “I mean like, parents and I don’t know, this weird thing happened my senior year of high school where I started telling people I was interested in creative writing, and they’d always give me those fucking lectures about the future. And so, I don’t know, it made me change my mind. And I can just creatively write in my spare time, right? And like I said, poli-sci and econ aren’t bad or anything; I enjoy them. It’s not what I’m most passionate about, but I care about them still in a way.”
Tom nodded his head. “That’s fair. I remember those talks too from over in England from all the adults. Though, they stopped caring about my major as much when they learned I was leaving the country to study, and then it became a, ‘Are you really sure you want to leave your family behind?’ type deal.” He rolled his eyes. “It was all total bullshit. Want more sangria?”
Oh, you hadn’t even noticed you were close to being done. You nodded your head and passed the glass back over to him. And while he poured another glass, your mind traced back over what you’d just spilled to Tom in the past few minutes. It usually took you awhile to admit these kind of things, especially your insecurity about your own major, to your friends. Yet somehow, this British boy you’d met at your favorite bar and coffee shop managed to sneak that information out of you with ease.
You weren’t sure if it was the sangria, your stress, or him that got you talking. But either way, you were suddenly embarrassed for pouring out so much to this random stranger. He was handling it well, but you figured it might be better to transfer to a lighter topic. At least, one that you wouldn’t immediately regret opening up about in the morning.
“So, Dommo’s huh? What’s it like?”
Tom grinned as he passed you back a glass. “S’all right. I usually do the early morning shifts, and apart from the work rush, it’s normally empty so I can do homework or something. Plus, it lets me get creative with my bartending and by being a barista, so it’s always kind of neat when you try something new out and it becomes the specialty drink.”
“I’m sure it’s handy for parties and stuff with your friends too. And if you’re doing the morning shift you get all this shit to work with to make a cup of coffee before class.”
Tom chuckled to himself. “Yeah, I’ve been known to be the bartender friend of the group, so I’m almost always on drink-duty.” He stared at you for a long moment. “You should come ‘round, the next time we have a party or something. I think if you like my sangria, you’d like my mixed drinks too. I’ve been known to make a good gin & tonic every now and then.”
You raised your eyebrows appraisingly. And that’s when it hit you — this bartender was subtly trying to flirt with you.
You eyed him for a second. He was pretty damn cute. If you hadn’t been in your complete anxious haze earlier, you might of hit on him when you first walked in. Now, that you were out of it, well…
“Yeah, I think I’d be down for that sometime. I mean, just let me know when and where, and I’ll find a way to get there.”
Tom grinned and you realized that your earlier plans of sulking at home this evening were already cancelled.
Four glasses of sangria later, you were sufficiently drunk. Dommo’s Upstairs had pretty much emptied out, and the other bartender was heading back, leaving just you and Tom in there. You glanced up at the clock, noting that it was 1:30 a.m. Had you really been talking to Tom for that long? How had all that time fly by?
You checked your phone, noting a whole flux of texts from Tony and Jacob that you hadn’t read yet. They were mostly asking how your paper went, though there were many typos in the messages from the duo. You knew your friends were just as drunk — if not more drunk — than you were.
“You all right there?” Tom asked.
You glanced up, smiling. “Yeah, m’friends, they’re just super drunk. Those fuckers can’t even type right now.” Your words were slurring together and you laughed at yourself.
“And you’re obviously in pristine condition,” he joked.
You feigned offense. “I’ve never been drunk in my life, Tom!”
“Okayokay, you’re right.” He lifted his hands up in defense, chuckling. “Now, how are you getting home tonight dear?”
“I live not too far, so I’m just going to walk back I think.”
Tom cocked his head. “You sure you don’t have a friend who is sober you can call or something? Or I can call you a Lyft, but it’d be safest for you to call someone you knew really well.”
You frowned. “Well, Jacob and Tony are both drunk. I have some gal pals that might be able to, but… not anyone I’m super close with. I don’t know.”
Tom thought for a long second, then said, “If you’re comfortable with it, I could drive you. But only if you’re comfortable with it. We just met so I would totally get any uneasiness you’d have here.”
You grinned. “Tom, we’re like, best friends now! That’s super okay.”
He laughed at your exclamation, and nodded his head. “All right, we close at 2 a.m. I’ll start cleaning up early so we can leave immediately. You just hang out, all right?”
You nodded your head in agreement.
As Tom shuffled around the bar, setting everything in motion, you began to sing along again to “Learning to Fly” by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. The song had been stuck in your head ever since you’d heard it on the radio this afternoon.
“I'm learning to fly, but I ain't got wings.”
“Coming down is the hardest thing,” Tom sang out from across the room. “Dude, I love that song.”
“It’s been stuck in my head all day,” you said. “Ever since I heard it on the radio this morning, Do you listen to ‘Across the Pond?’ You might like it.”
Tom seemed smug at your response. You raised an eyebrow. “I actually host it,” he admitted. “With my friend Harrison.”
You nearly dropped the glass of sangria you were nursing.
“Are you Dutch? Holy fuck. My friends and I listen to the show all the time. I love it.”
He beamed. “You do? I wasn’t sure if anyone was really paying attention to us.”
“Are you kidding me? Like half the campus is in love with you guys. Everyone I know listens. You’ve got the best taste in music out of all the shows. Remember Cum Talk?”
Tom gagged a little bit. “That show was absolute shit. I don’t know how they got that slot last year.”
“Exactly! No one liked it! But seriously, when you guys did your first episode, my friend and I were hooked on the show immediately.”
Tom’s smile grew. “Well, I’ll have to tell Harrison. We both thought we were shouting into the void for a while there.” He cleared his throat. “I’m gonna go grab something from the back room though really quick, then I’m ready to go. It’s just my jacket and keys.”
You nodded your head, waiting patiently and replying to more of Jacob and Tony’s texts. He came back out after a few seconds, now with a denim jacket around his shoulders and a set of keys in his hand. “Ready to go? I just gotta lock up.”
You nodded your head. “Let’s go, m’kinda tired.”
Tom quickly locked up both the upstairs and downstairs of Dommo’s. He was parallel parked right in front of the shop, and you were grateful he offered you a ride back in your inebriation. You hadn’t realize it was so chilly outside and you knew you would barely survive the short walk back to your apartment.
There were other drunk college students wandering around downtown. There was one small group in particular the two of you passed in Tom’s car, loudly singing “All Star” by Smashmouth and you couldn’t help laughing. In the back of your head, you realized faintly this was truly going to be your last school year to be a part of all of this. Even though you knew you could always go out to bars, drink and have fun, you had the terrible suspicion things wouldn’t just quite be the same. The thought made you incredibly sad.
“Hey, you still holding up okay?” Tom asked.
You nodded your head. “Just thinking bout how this is my last year is all.” You let out a long sigh. “I don’t know what the fuck I’m going to do after this. Oh, fuck, turn left here.”
Tom quickly turned the car, having you glide to the side of the seat. Your apartment complex was now in sight.
“Hey, it’s okay, none of us really do,” Tom said.
But he didn’t get it, since he still didn’t know you well enough. Even though you were the friend who enjoyed to go out — one of the so-called “weekend warriors” — you were also the friend of the group who always had it together. You prided in being functional and having a plan. Now, when it came to life after college, you only felt concern.
He came to a stop in front of your building.
“I didn’t know you lived so close to me,” Tom said, changing the topic effectively. “I’m actually in the same complex a few buildings down from you.”
You raised an eyebrow. “Well, you should come over and visit some time then.”
Tom studied you for a long moment in the car. You bit your lip, feeling like maybe he’d just lean over and kiss you right then and there. After the long night of discussion, you thought maybe he’d make the move it felt like he was slowly nudging toward all night.
But instead he said, “Well, thanks for sticking around. I’ll see you sometime again.”
You tried to stuff down your disappointment and said a simple, “Okay, yeah. I’ll see ya.”
You exited the car, giving one last glance back over at Tom. He looked so good. You felt this excitement creep up on you, as you thought of all the possibilities and all the adventures you could have with this person you’d just opened up so easily to in Dommo’s this evening.
It wasn’t until you walked back up the stairs into your own apartment that you realized you never actually got his phone number.

holy fuck, god is real (well, i mean, obvs, but he’s been coming thru for me 90% of the time lately and today is one of those times).
so, not only was i able to go to class and get an idea for what i need to do for my full group project (that i have to finish myself, which is what we’re supposed to do), but i was completely apathetic and not even remotely anxious at all, even on two and a half hours of sleep (tho, i did get an hour nap before our company meeting), but i just checked canvas and holy fuck. my paper, that i thought i was going to have to write tonight in like, 2 hours (bc it’s due at midnight) even tho i haven’t slept and haven’t read enough analysis(es?) of the script (hedda gabler, which i read one act of an promptly decided that, nah, i learned the same shit from reading a summary, so it wasn’t worth it to read that much bullshit), and am too tired to even comprehend my own words, let alone a fucking play, is not actually due tonight. it’s due next monday. i can do it over fall break. that means i can fuck around for a little while tonight (even tho i’ve got a p big project, that’s already late, well, half of it is, the other half is due wed) and then get a decent amount of rest for once. i’m just- i got a zero on a big portion of my giant sa project and i missed my intro class today (bc i wanted and extra hour and a half of sleep) but everything else has gone great. absolutely grand, cats. i’ve got an extra week for the paper and i’m gonna get a full 8 hours tonight. i’m so fucking happy.
so, i’m beginning to think things are looking up for me. the tides, they are a turning, and these waters are getting less choppy. if things stay like this for a couple weeks, i should be able to fully get my shit together and start being on top of things. i think it’s gonna be okay, tho, i rly do. i’m gonna use fall break to write a kick ass paper (bc essays are my shit, i’m amazing at them, when i’m not dead tired and trying to write 5 pages in 2 hours, which i can do, but well, it wouldn’t be my best work at all, and i try to have some pride in my writing), get ahead on my acting I monologues, and get my entire life organized via planners, alarms, sticky notes, to do lists, and a binder. i’m gonna get my shit together (i keep repeating this bc every time i say it, i feel more confident that i can) and the rest of the semester isn’t going to be a constant struggle. i’m gonna be on top of shit. i’m going to show the theatre dept that i’m capable of kicking ass and that i’m deserving of respect. i’m going to get everything worked out and sorted and i’m gonna slowly work on my trauma and trusting ppl and being a nice person. i’m never gonna be normal, but i can be functional. i can be stable.
so, i think i’m gonna fuck around on tumblr for a while, maybe, possibly watch the rest of dp2, and then go tf to sleep, wake up rested, and maybe even do my makeup tomorrow. bc rafiki said i look good in earth tones, so i bought earth tones, and i’d like to try them out. like, he’s v honest, so i trust his opinion. he’s not just saying it to placate me. and i do want to be pretty. i want to look nice. and apparently wearing bright ass lipsticks that make me look like i’ve been dining on a box of crayolas scares ppl a bit. i’m a bit tired of scaring ppl, tbh. i just want to look nice and be able to be confident in myself without hiding behind outrageous makeup and clothes. and, if i’m lucky, i might not have to exist on caffeine and semi-legal drugs tomorrow. my friends are busy tonight, so they won’t be over, but i can get some sleep, so i’m okay with it. besides, i always feel like i bother them too much. like, i invite one or both of them over literally every night. literally. i think in the past three weeks i’ve had maybe 4 days where i didn’t spend time with at least one of the victory bros. i mean, if i was bothering them, they’d probs just not come over, but i always worry that i’m too needy and they just come bc they think i’m fragile or some shit and wouldn’t be able to handle being told ‘no.’ i need to talk to them abt it and have them be honest with me (tho, they generally are honest, even when i wish they wouldn’t be) so ik for sure. i’m scared the answer will be ‘yeah, stop bothering us daily, it’s annoying’ but if it it, it is and i’ll deal with it.
anyway, i’m gonna fuck around, maybe update my planner a bit for the week while i watch dp2, but then i’m going tf to bed. i’ve recently discovered something. if i sleep in my hoodie, then i feel safer, warmer, and more comfortable and therefore feel more rested when i wake up. so, guess who’s sleeping in a hoodie from now on? this bitch. it worked last winter, it seems to be working now, and i’m just gonna keep doing it until it stops working. tho, i do need to wash the hoodie. i could do that tonight, but that’ll take a couple of hours, so i might just wait until tomorrow, since i’ll have hw and therefore will be awake, anyway. if i have enough quarters. i might have to get goldilocks to take me to the laundromat, since they have a change machine and the washers are better than the ones at the apartments, and cheaper. idk, yet.
but, i’mma stop rambling now, i think. i highly doubt any of you cats actually read these long ass bullshit posts, but they make me feel better to write up, so i’mma continue with them. it makes my head quieter to get the words out.
oh! i plan to get the next chap of tal written (or, at least partially written, tho i’m shooting to finish it) during the break, too, so if i’m lucky and don’t just sleep for 4 days straight, it might actually get posted before next mon. fingers crossed.

alrighty. well today wasn’t bad, not all that much thrilling stuff but nothing too bad either. I was bad again this morning and didn’t go to PT because I wanted to keep sleeping and hey I mean I’m on my period so that’s a good enough excuse right? whatever. I woke back up at 11:20 and got ready for class, then headed out. Got to school, stuck my lunch box in the fridge and dropped my stuff in the PAD office and picked up my civil rights book that I left there on Monday since I was done with my reading and didn't want to lug it back and forth unnecessarily. Civil rights was fine, I wasn’t concerned about getting cold called since I was on Monday, though I did raise my hand at one point to comment on one of the “problems” in the book because it had to do with a qualified immunity defense against a social services caseworker for their actions in a child protection case, so I just commented that everything the problem stated was standard protocol and she would definitely be entitled to qualified immunity for it (qualified immunity generally covers actions government officials take that aren’t blatantly against clearly established law, but can be waived in certain circumstances, whereas absolute immunity is much more difficult to waive and only applies to certain officials like judges and prosecutors). And yeah, that was that. I have to remember to work on our midterm essay prompt for the class which I think is a third of our grade and is due on Monday (and of course I haven’t even looked at the prompt yet) but I should have plenty of time to do that over the week going to and from Cleveland for Wizarding World Cleveland (though probably more on the way back because I may sleep on the way there as we’re leaving at 2 in the fucking morning) so I’m not too worried about that. After class I went back to the PAD office, which pretty much stayed empty the whole time I was there (which was a solid 3 hours) which is kind of odd, but I think my one friend is working now and the other has just been MIA because he was dealing with some family stuff and his grandfather just passed, so I think he was having to go home semi-often to deal with all of that. So it was just me, which is probably good for getting work done purposes. And it was time to actually do my legal drafting assignment, and let me tell you, after bombing the last assignment my LARC Anxiety™ was at an all time high (I know I’m technically in legal drafting now and not LARC, but it’s really just a continuation of the same thing). So now I’m trying to write the damn thing and I’m like. I know what I’m writing is not good, but I just don’t know what the fuck else to write. I provided the law, I cited how the facts apply to the law, and stated what I believe should be done, but like, it feels super repetitive but I just don’t know what the fuck else to say and I have to hit the minimum page amount, which has legit never been an issue for me before because I always have more than enough to say on a subject. So this was painful and like, I finished it but I have so much dread about the assignment and I’m worried I’m gonna totally bomb it and get such a shitty grade in this case that I should be fucking CALI’ing because I clearly know more than literally any other person in the class (and I’m not like, tooting my own horn here, it’s like I’m more of a TA than a student at this point, I end up explaining half of the concepts we’re learning about to everyone else) and I’m just so fucking frustrated over it and don’t know what else to do. Ugh. I finished it around 4:40 though and I’ll review it tomorrow during the day and try to revise what I can before handing it in at class tomorrow night. I ran over to Starbucks when I was done and got a venti pink drink because I needed sugar and I’m such a basic white girl it hurts, but it actually has a lot less calories than their hot drinks made with steamed milk and flavored syrups so 🤷🏻‍♀️. I also got some of their reduced fat coffee cake, which is great. Hung out for a little while longer and then headed up to class at 5:50. I didn’t even attempt to do the reading for secured transactions this week, I just didn’t have the time or strength to do so, and paying attention in class was really not something that was gonna happen, and I can recognize that, so I did some other random stuff and tried to tune in for a few minutes where I could so I would at least have some semblance of what we were learning about. Eventually that ended, I went home and walking back from the train was super cold, which was obnoxious because when I left this morning it was like 60 degrees out, and now it was like 35, and that’s just not cool, So I got home and was settling in, the casually turned on the tv to see what had recorded, only to see I was 38 minutes into the mid-season premiere of Designated Survivor, which I had no clue came back tonight, so I immediately started watching that. I am soooooooooo pissed about Alex being dead though, like I freaking adored her character, she was such a badass female lawyer and I’m going to miss her so freaking much. I do have to say though that it did make for some interesting plot development. I hope we get more stuff with the kids now being that they obviously can’t use the “oh they’re away with their mom” excuse anymore. Hannah of course was back in action and kicking ass, MAH GIRL, she was so great and I appreciate her so much. I absolutely lost my shit during the preview at the end of the episode when they announced FREAKING KIM RAVER is going to be on the show, like I literally jumped out of my seat and like, screamed. So basically, for those of you not familiar with 24, Kim Raver played Audrey Raines, Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland’s character)’s love interest for like two seasons, and they were so perfect together and it was all so heartbreaking because they never got their happy ever after and like, they were my baes before shipping and social media was really a thing, so for her to show up on Designated Survivor and being reunited with Kiefer is definitely not something I ever thought I’d see, and I’m absolutely thrilled at this news. I was actually very invested in Kim Raver at one point because she was also on Third Watch, which was like, my first real tv obsession when I was like 12, and she was in several seasons of that, so I’ve watched a hell of a lot of Kim Raver on my screen, but it’s been years since I have. So yeah, I was pretty pleased to hear that in case you couldn’t tell (lol). I stayed up for a little while longer taking care of some stuff while watching Jimmy Kimmel, then started getting ready for bed and here we are. Tomorrow morning I have to go do this thing that I will explain in more detail after it happens, and like, I feel like it’s gonna be super uncomfortable and I’m really anxious about it all, even though I know it’ll be okay in the end, I just need to get it over with. But yeah, more on that tomorrow. Alright, time for me to hit the hay. Goodnight lovelies. Have a wonderful night.

The Cheever Files The Cheever Files Adventures of a Senior Thesis.  Secondary blog of @midlife-stoodent.
D-1
Had to jump the count a few days because my Senior thesis is due TODAY.  I had the due date in my planner as Sunday.
I am nearly finished with it.  I turned in my thesis and subclaims into my prof via email, then when I got started, I used the same and wrote out my own words beneath my subclaims (I changed their type to BOLD to keep them separate).  It worked!  I am able to maintain an outline!  I tend to scatter ideas…
I am not asking for an extension.  I have asked for them all term and I simply need to get this done.  I am 10 pages in, I have three sublaims left to do, and it’s not due until 11:59PM tonight.
THIS WILL HAPPEN.
I work best when dealing with absolute fear.  Don’t follow my example.   #thecheeverfiles#studyblr#studyspo#spring2016#ELNM#seniorthesis 5 notes

The struggle is very real.  Still receiving instruction from my prof on my thesis.
At least my tense is correct.
BTW, I work better under pressure.  Spending an entire term on a paper has yet to work for me.

D-7.  Senior Thesis is due this week. Thankfully I am off of work, so that’s one less thing to worry about.
My digital project is completed (first picture) and that has been uploaded.  I am still (yes, still) working on my thesis and subclaims.  I emailed a correction back to my prof this afternoon, once I hone my thesis she will get to my subclaims.
Tomorrow I have to drop off my paperwork for my Service Learning, and take the TB test.  I don’t know if all of this is going to get done before the end of the term, but that professor has given us an option if we weren’t able to solidify our service learning before the term ended.
I think 60 coffee pods should last me until the end of the week?  Last term I went through 80 in a week and a half, and this term is way harder.  I may need more… #thecheeverfiles#studyblr#studyspo#spring2016#ELNM#Seniorthesis#starbucks 3 notes
D-15.  Rough Draft final draft, if that makes sense.  I am truly blessed to have an amazing advisor/professor who gave us an extension (read: mercy) to turn it in for our rough draft workshop.  I have until 6AM tomorrow morning to get this uploaded. **weeps with gratefulness**
Did I ever mention the size of my Senior Thesis class?  There’s myself, and two other ladies.  One of the many benefits of attending a small, private university.
I admit, I did the usual “check-out” in the middle of the term, where I was watching You Tube videos instead of writing.  Then today, when the module for Week 8 comes out, we get the admonishment to not check out.
I am reeling myself back in.

Rough draft time.  Have my most excellent feedback from my professor to help, as well as my own lightbulb moment.  All I need now is the time to get it written.  She did extend the due date for us, which I absolutely love because our drafts go into a workshop for final editing.
I miscalculated my vacation time from work, it’s next week, and I should have asked for this week, or even the rest of the month off.
Oh well.  It will get done.

D-25.  25 days left to go.
Along with my essay, I also have to complete a digital assignment as part of my grade to add to my portfolio.  Ovid’s Metamorphoses arrived via Amazon Student Prime today.  Yes, Ovid + Cheever=Digital Project.  It’s going to be awesome.
Still trying to raise my thesis from the bowels of hell.  I was going to discuss the agency of the various rooms used in “A Country Husband” but I realized I needed to narrow that focus, so I am doing the agency of living rooms in the text.  Of course, it throws my rough draft right out the window…
I love my Starbucks cup. #thecheeverfiles#studyblr#studyspo#spring2016#ELNM#seniorthesis#metamorphoses#starbucks#seemyfilofax? 7 notes
My First Draft is turned in, a minute past my self-imposed deadline of 5AM. I am so thankful my boss let me leave work two hours early so I could go home, nap, and finish this madness.  I am not good at first drafts…a final copy I can do, but first drafts?  My mind is still a jumble of thoughts and quotes.
After I uploaded my draft, I found an article on John Cheever that said he isn’t taught in schools anymore, if he ever really was.  I find that to be a big old shame because the man is brilliant.  Needless to say, even though I had already turned in my draft, I am now determined to make my paper a testament to his literary greatness.  The man should be taught in schools, students are really missing out.
I am going to sleep the sleep of a student who has been burning the candle at both ends, what with full-time work and three classes to deal with.   #thecheeverfiles#studyblr#studyspo#spring2016#ELNM#seniorthesis 1 note
Literary TheoryLiterary Theory Senior ThesisLiterary TheorySenior Thesis 4/22/16:  Over the course of my academic career (so far, it’s only been what, two years?) I have learned working with a printout of a text is much easier for annotating than with a book.  I have absolutely no shame in destroying a book in the name of essay writing, but there is less guilt with using a printout.  This is my copy of “A Country Husband”, the first and second pages.  Yeah, I use Midori stickers to mark important transitions within the text.
I have also learned to SAVE. MY. NOTES from previous classes.  Last term, I took Literary Theory, and I need to apply a theoretical lens to my thesis.  It is times like these I am glad I am so anal about my notes, as my notebook from Lit Theory is divided by the different theories.
The rough draft is due next week, already I have the very familiar pangs of self-doubt.  Maybe I am placing too much pressure on myself, but this paper is a reflection of me and my scholarship.  In no way do I want to come off as pedestrian, but that is my largest fear moving forward. #thecheeverfiles#studyblr#studyspo#spring2016#ELNM#seniorthesis 2 notes
Senior Thesis, Week 4:  Way back when I took Literary Analysis (from the same professor) I kept all of the writing “hacks” she gave us.  I printed them all up and tucked them away into a file folder.  Turns out she’s using them for this class as well.  Don’t know if the drawing belongs to her, but it still makes me laugh.  Funny, two years ago when I took Literary Analysis I was very self-conscious of my essay-writing.  Now it doesn’t phase me at all.
I am reading Cheever’s “Letters”…the man is hilarious, dark and so right-on with his discriptions of humanity.  There’s an entire section entitled “The Suburbs”, from when he moved his family out of the city to upstate NY.  The passage I highlighted tickles me, but I have to wonder:  how often do we look at the belongings of others to remind us of who we are and where we came from?
My schedule for the upcoming week.  My days off are Thursday and Friday, so I begin the fresh week there.  Today (Monday) I register for Summer.  I have to be at work by 230PM and other than continuing my Cheever reading I have my two other classes.
WRITE EVERY DAY.
Our rough draft is due next week, so this is our instruction. #thecheeverfiles#studyblr#studyspp#spring2016#ELNM#seniorthesis 7 notes
Got my Prospectus/Annotated Bibliography done, several hours before I was scheduled to turn it in, so that’s over.
This week we will be working on our Digital Project/Digital Presence, so we get a break from writing.  Doesn’t mean the fun stops, I still have two other classes to maintain.  Above is my weekly calendar, I use it as well as my Ardium Academic planner.  My “weekend” is on Thursday/Friday, which is why the dates are wonky.
As for Digital Presence, I really am not worried about it.  I cleaned up my social media when I was accepted to uni because I knew there would be a time where I had to do the exact same thing, so I just wiped a whole bunch of accounts.   #thecheeverfiles#studyblr#studysop#spring2016#ELNM#Seniorthesis 3 notes
Prospectus and Annotated Bibliography Work:
This is the current time.  Not too bad, as I don’t get home from work until after 11PM, but my eyes are getting tired.  I’m indulging in a large mug of black tea, having consumed enough coffee over the course of the day to sink a ship.
I have spent this past week reading and researching.  I carry a book or an article with me at all times, because you never know when you are going to have a moment to catch up on some reading.  I had a few minutes while at the gas station the other day, so I read a few paragraphs.
You do what you have to do to get it done.  :)
My beat up Writer’s Reference book, a university requirement.
No, I don’t have to work tomorrow (sarcasm).
I have my annotations completed, but I need to edit them to make sure all of the commas are in the right place.  I am almost finished with the prospectus part.
I did, however, make sure Word was functional on my iPad and the entire project was accessible.  WIN.  Now I can finish this up at work tomorrow.
It’s due at 11:59 Monday night.   #thecheeverfiles#studyblr#studyspo#spring2016#ELNM#seniorthesis 21 notes
Day 2:  Well, technically I am still running on the original post, but in reality we have passed midnight.  Welcome to 2:15AM.
Week 2 is the Prospectus and Annotated Bibliography portion of Senior Thesis.  I took notes of the instructions and WON on three academic sources.  I need 5 total, including the original text.  I could hug my WR 323 instructor right now, because I have become a master of Google Scholar and our library’s online search engine.
I leave this post with a picture of my stapler.  This little honey has the capacity of stapling 40 pages at once, and for someone who simply cannot read and retain electronically, this has been a great investment.  Oh, and all of the printer ink and paper I stocked up on last term.   #thecheeverfiles#studyblr#studyspo#LIT498#spring2016#ELNM#seniorthesis
Day 1:  Amazon Student Prime and Sunday delivery for the win.  My books came today! I never had a book for “A Country Husband”, all I ever had was a .pdf.  I will say, annotating on a copy is a lot easier than in a book.  So, I printed out another.
The term just began a week ago, and for that first week we had to turn in an annotated page from two papers we have written during our academic career here at Marylhurst.  “Desireè’s Baby” by Chopin was my other choice, but I was sold on Cheever from the beginning. #thecheeverfiles#studyblr#studyspo#spring2016#LIT498#seniorthesis#ELNM 2 notes A Digital Accounting of my Adventures with my Senior Thesis. @midlife-stoodent here.  I am an English Literature and New Media major, and welcome to my Senior Thesis studyblr.  Check out my main blog for more studyblr goodness.
I decided to chronicle my path of the Senior Thesis to create a digital footprint of the process.  Obviously, my Thesis is on John Cheever, his short story “The Country Husband” to be exact.  I chose Cheever because his stories about the middle class intrigue me.
So!  Lets get this started!  I will be following the usual #studyblr format. #thecheeverfiles#studyblr#studyspo#spring2016#LIT498#seniorthesis#ELNM 1 note
