Howd they bring up the junior scouts idea to max??? Was he like Whatever sure or super tsundere or surprisingly emotional that they wanted him back after he aged out?? Okay so. I call it the '6 years later' AU but technically i have Stuff Planned for all the time that passed between now and then too, so this'll be a bit longer, sorry!!

Max joining the counselor team was actually kind of a natural/gradual development?? Basically, since I can't make CC content that isn't found family Max has a shit home life, and, even if he hates to admit it at first, the three months of summer camp become his bright spot each year. David and Gwen catch on to that, but there isn't much they can do to help outside of camp - until one day Max (age 13/14ish) shows up on Gwen's doorstep because he ran away from home, 'since his parents won't care either way'. While he does return home after hiding out at Gwen's place for a weekend, this kind of kicks off a pattern of Max running away sporadically, to Gwen's, later David's, or his friends places. I could go into more detail here but. this is already long. oop.

ANYWAYS. So with Max spending basically all the time he can away from home and the summers at camp, once he ages out there's. A Bit of panic starting in him once summer gets closer again, because his Safe Place seems inaccessible, and two of his OTHER options, especially for longer stays away from home, would also be unavailable. Gwen and David notice this (it manifests in Max staying over More but Angrier) and try to find a solution. Gwen proposes the Jr Counselor idea. They introduce the idea to Max by kinda implying that workload around camp is a lot, and it'd really hurt to miss one of their most experienced campers, but... maybe, if he worked there too (well, interned. basically unpaid. but! no camp tuition!) he could help them? so they basically give Max a way to say yes without admitting that he's the one who needs camp the most. He does insult the whole thing ofc, and says like he's just doing it because he knows camp would burn down without him there ("actually, most of the fires we had were started by you...?" "shut it, david") but secretly he's really really happy. He might even thank them later that evening. Quietly. Before complaining about it preemptively. <3

While most of the other campers had some rotations over the years, I don't have conk rete plans for most of them - Nikki and Neil are still Max' gang, and returned for multiple summers, if not all. This year though, Neil is busy with college prep, and Nikki is spending the summer at home because of family crisis. They still video call a lot, they're still The Gang. I have sketched designs for them, but I'm not quite happy yet.

Max at first doesn't take his role seriously, because he's basically just Back For Another Summer, but pretty quickly realises Gwen and David DO have expectations, and DO give him responsibilities. He takes a while to come around on his new relationship to the younger kids, and especially one of the youngest kids takes a liking to him, a very anxious young girl, which annoys him at first, but... well. It's a whole ~character arc~ for Max waiting to happen tbh.

Annie is an Animal rescue worker.

Having had experience as a dog trainer before, it wasn't hard to find a full time job at her local shelter after graduating high school, having volunteered there before.

With time, effort and a lot of energy she made her way into the position of "animal control officer" now she spends her days busting animal's abusers doors and rescuing injured or neglected pets.

With long shifts and a high maintenance job, her time was all poured into her work. Usually she'd be exhausted after a long day.

Despite that, she's fulfilled and satisfied with her job. Not having to deal with a lot of people is a plus too, it's a hard job yes but she prefers it this way.

Her friends are bumped about not being able to see her a lot but they understand, plus she keeps in touch with them by lurking in the group chat only to send a snarky remark to stir the pot every now and then.

Bertolt sees her everyday because they work at the same animal shelter, even if their jobs are different they still walk home together, she also met some different people like Hitch and Marco at her job.

The kids love her job, they think it's badass, especially Gabi and Udo. Gabi because Annie gets to kick people in the face and Udo because he genuinely cares about animals.

She'd never tell anyone this, but part of the reason she wanted the job was because she felt guilty for her past self and wanted to fight for those who couldn't fight for themselves.

Bertolt is a veterinarian.

Having changed his mind post graduation and going to college instead of with Reiner, he graduated after 4 years of studying and is currently working with Annie at the local shelter while also planning to open his own clinic one day.

He takes some animals under his personal care for weeks or months even till they get adopted, he fears something bad will happen to the weak or ill ones if left at the shelter overnight.

Just like Annie, the job takes a lot of his time, not to mention caring for animals off of work. So he's in the same situation as her, but for the sake of his best friend he still finds time to visit and hang out once a week.

Reiner and him still text daily, it's mostly pictures Bertolt took of the animals, Annie on her break, interesting plants he finds along the way. And Reiner replies with pictures of the kids.

They still find time to play basketball together, they try to keep it a secret from Annie because she will kick their ass in it.

Bertolt is comfortable with his job, he feels like he belongs and likes being needed. Yes the long hours are a con but seeing the fruits of his labour grow and get better day by day makes it all worth it.

The kids like visiting his house because there usually will be a new dog or some animal in there every month or so, Reiner makes sure they don't bother the animals. 

Something he's never told anyone is a big part of the reason he changed his mind last minute was because Animals feel much safer and secure for him to work with than humans.

Colt is a college student working part time.

He's majoring in nursing, being a four years degree he's trying to balance his studies with work and taking care of Falco.

Zeke offered him to work full time after graduation at his clinic, since he's been working part time there for a while and the pay is good, plus it's really convenientnal.

He has worked different part time jobs in the past like a barista, flower shop assistant, tutor, kindergarten teacher, etc.

Between all his responsibilities he barely has time for himself, his courses end right before his work starts and the small bits in-between is spent on Falco and his friends. Zeke and Pieck try to take some of his responsibility but he refuses saying it's the least he could do to Falco.

He's really good at his job like multitasking, reading people, gaining their trust and having high stamina that he could stay for night shifts even.

He relies on coffee a lot.

Falco sees him as a real life superhero, they weren't that close before but after the incident he really started appreciating his big brother. 

Something he keeps inside is that despite pursuing this job because he genuinely wanted to make a difference in people's lives and help the sick, he also felt a crushing guilt after his parents passed away, and so he's trying to save other people's lives now instead.

Marcel is a pilot.

It's a dream he always had since middle school, soon after graduation he joined the military to gain enough flying hours and experience to apply to a commercial airline after taking some mathematics, aviation and some general flying courses.

He was officially hired as a pilot after getting his first class medical certificate to check his health.

His work isn't measured by hours to him but by days, he needs to be available 24/7 in case of an emergency call. Now he's working overseas and far away from his friends.

You've actually never met Marcel, only seen pictures of him and received letters. The person he keeps in touch with the most is Porco.

He likes his work, it's his dream. He doesn't like the work hours and being so absent from his friends and brother, he misses them so much at times.

Pieck is a tattoo artist.

Her shop is actually her old flower shop after she decided to change her career. She's always been good with plants and taking care of them, at that time Colt worked as her assistant. 

It wasn't till later after some years of practice and training under other artists that she was confident enough about her skills to start the project 

Her art is full of life, mesmerising and beautiful. She puts her soul in every piece and has gained a good reputation because of it, plus having really high ratings and strict hygiene rules, no health inspector could ever challenge her.

Having her own independent work meant that she has a very flexible schedule, being mostly free ment she could pursue other hobbies like gardening.

A peaceful and simple life where she can indulge in her art and be happy is all she ever wanted

Porco is a frequent customer of hers that gets a family discount, Zeke came once before and later sent his friend, a really tall and blonde woman who became her most frequent customer.

Zofia thinks her work is really cool and wants to go and just watch her do her thing, but it's frowned upon to have a kid just sitting at a tattoo shop.

Despite changing into this career, the town people still think of her as the sweet flower shop lady.

Porco is a bartender.

That job came to him by accident more than anything, he was working part time as a bouncer in a local bar but a slot was open after the old bartender suddenly quit and he gave it a chance.

He didn't expect to love it so much, neither did he know about his hidden talent in mixing drinks. So he took it as full time and changed to better bars after gaining the experience he needed.

Being naturally charismatic and good at influencing people, while also multitasking in making drinks and keeping a conversation going, he was instantly a hit in whatever place he worked at.

Working the night shift ment he's mostly free in the morning, he tries to help Pieck with her gardening and is actually attempting to grow some plants at his house.

Naturally whenever there's a gathering, he's the one mixing drinks and being the self assigned bartender who openly judges his friends for their choice in drinks. The charismatic persona being thrown out the window and replaced by a no mouth filter.

He genuinely cares tho, he's the one taking care of someone when they drink more they can handle. It's mostly Colt who underestimates his drinks and is left clinging to Porco who drives him home.

Because of his line of work, tattoos and general brash personality, the kids' parents don't like him even one bit. They're suspicious of him no matter how many times Reiner assures them he's trustworthy.

It's actually only Colt who trusts Falco with him, and maybe Zofia's mom who is at the bar every weekend. 

Reiner is a firefighter.

With his mother pushing him into this line of work, he applied for the physical and psychological exams after graduation before getting accepted. He wasn't unprepared per say but actually being in that line of work was more than he could ever prepare for.

It instantly took a great hit at his mental health, so much in fact that he was thankful Bertolt changed his mind last minute and didn't follow him in this job.

It was both everything he ever wanted, like saving people, helping children, animals and knowing it's him who saved them even if it means putting his own life at risk.

But also everything he hated, like the hunting faces and screams of the people who were far too gone for him to save, the recurring nightmares and constant guilt paired with imposter syndrome.

He works a 24/72 shift, meaning he works for a whole day before getting 3 days off. Approximately only working 7-8 days a month, not to mention unpaid leave, sick days and holidays.

So it both gave him a really tight schedule on some days and on others more free time than he knows what to do with, that's why he naturally took the main role of being the kid's caretaker. Looking after his little cousins genuinely helped him and he liked playing the big brother role.

Especially to Gabi, he was the only stable adult in her life. It's common knowledge that you call Reiner first for anything concerning her before her parents because he's more likely to answer and be available.

After meeting you, his life improved to the better as you moved in and became a trustworthy person in his life, someone he can depend on to take care of his little cousins on the days he works.

Not to mention that after you persuaded him to see a therapist, his mental health began improving too.

Gabi may or may have not committed arson at one point, she still wants to be a firefighter despite that and follow in Reiner's footsteps.

He hasn't told anyone beside you this, but he really fears for her, but doesn't have the heart to tell her no.

Zeke is a doctor.

Previously he worked in a hospital but was able to open his own clinic afterwards, Colt was a great help to him at that time when he was getting on his own feet and even worked a lot of unpaid hours.

After that he insisted Colt works an official part time job there with a much higher pay, till he graduates at least. Plus the experience will greatly improve his resume.

Zeke is brilliant at his job, he'd be a perfect doctor wasn't it for the fact he's a huge hypocrite who doesn't follow the advice he gives his patients. 

He does a side job in his free time that honestly no one of his friends know what it is, but they know it gained him a lot of connections and made new friends.

Something he always keeps buried inside was that he really never expected himself to become a doctor especially after what his dad did to his mother, and yet here he is. In some way it's like his own personal stepping stone to prove he's a better man than his father ever was.

Bonus:

just had my first day of work! heres a super long entry about the day lol 

so my first day of work was yesterday. 

i woke up at around 6:45 from a very light and anxiety ridden sleep. as my past posts suggest, i’ve been anxious about starting this job since the day i got hired, roughly 3 weeks ago. i’ve been out of work for a year now, and i knew that my surprise sabbatical from adult life was coming to an end, as so many pillars of this era began to fall down around me. my boyfriend broke up with me, i got vaccinated, and social events are beginning to open up again etc. 

i was so anxious that I had already packed my lunch and snacks, had my outfit laid out on the bed, and three alarms set just in case i fell back asleep. 

when i woke up, i was taken back to summers past where i would wake up at this time on a daily basis to jump on a bus and go across town to work at a restaurant for 12ish hours. that was so terrifying, how did i ever get the courage to get out of bed? why is it now that two years later, this seems almost impossible? this new job is better in terms of pay, benefits, and location, yet I’m already wringing my towel. i thought about my most triumphant summer were i worked at an art gallery with no boss, no catty coworkers, and decent pay. 

i rolled over in bed and fed my inner demons. welcome to the first day of the rest of your life. droned in my head. i eventually rushed up without any thought and got ready. sometimes u just have to stop psyching yourself up and just do the damn thing. 

i got dressed in my planned outfit. a pair of black palazzo pants, a black t-shirt bodysuit, and a pair of ballet flats. this is my first time actually putting an effort into my appearance in over a year. it felt alien and the idea of having to do this for the unforseeable future made me feel uneasy. i liked how i looked but for how long? my stomach sunk while i reminisced about jobs past where i would come home melting and irritated by the fabric clinging onto my body. i hate summer. i put my heavy blazer on top, just to play it safe. 

the pandemic has been terrible. it has socially isolated me, deterred my future plans, made me gain a shit ton of weight, and ruined any good habit i have ever barely developed in my 23 years of life. however, the concept of wearing a mask has done wonders for my mental health. i am incredibly self conscious but the mask works as a buffer. i dont feel like no one sees me when i wear it, and im glad. 

i forced myself to drink some coffee with milk, and ate about half of a banana before feeling too nauseous to continue. this has been the earliest i’ve woke up in over a year. i sat and idled about for another 45 minutes or so while i waited for my dad to get ready. 

because i was starting so early, i was able to catch a ride from my dad. this place is so close to home its pretty much on his way to work. i was scared of being early so upon arrival i stood awkwardly behind another shop. i craved a cigarette but it was so hot and muggy it was almost suffocating to even stand still. i regretted my outfit choice. my pants were loose but they were also heavy and ill fitting on my waist. my shirt clung onto my back and the bodysuit contorted itself in with my underwear. my shoes began to give me blisters. after a few minutes of standing idly i decided to just say fuck it and walked into the building. 

to my surprise, i was the last person to walk in. i was greeted warmly and given a health check and then shown where my locker would be. the building was an opulent labyrinth filled with show rooms of expensive furniture and textiles. i walked around in awe before being led to a room where three other girls sat.

would these be my new friends? most likely not. but i was excited nonetheless. there was some idle talk before we officially started training. 

the training was typical and dragged on. the best part about the day was finding out lunch was a full hour. sure it was unpaid, but it beat the agony of trying to pile food in your mouth, grab a coffee, and smoke a cigarette in 30 minutes or less. 

the day ended and i managed to grab a ride home. i was so exhausted i was in bed by 9:30. 

i worked again today, and will work for the rest of the week, except saturday. 

i;m enjoying it but its so hard to be optimistic. my past experiences have always let me down how different can this place be? its been hard to make friends but im trying to be easy on myself. i havent been forced to talk to so many people since you guessed it, over a year. 

i hope the job proves to be useful and leads me down an exciting path. with the pay im making, im probably gonna pocket everything and keep saving up to hopefully travel.

That… Is very difficult to explain. 

Um… So first off. Thomas has a side name Virgil who represents his Anxiety. It effects his day to day life and was originally one of his ‘darker’ traits until Thomas learned to accept him. 

I don’t suffer from anxiety (outside of social situations). So when I stopped to consider what trait would potentially fill Virgil’s slot I discovered that it was Ambition. (there is a lot more to it than that but I’m trying to keep it pretty simple).

But Ambition doesn’t seem like it would be a dark side does it? Well… to much of a good thing and all that. Basically I was at a point in my life that I hated myself. 

Honestly, the issue sounds obvious when I talk about it but when you’re so goal orientated you tend to wear blinders. I was in denial. A woman my age with a child is not ‘supposed’ to prioritize anything over her family. I am ‘supposed’ to define myself by my children and husband and nothing else. If I don’t than I am a horrible human being and should be ashamed of myself… and I was. I was working a job and an unpaid internship, taking double classes, doing charity work, trying to run a household and raising my son. I was exhausting myself.

My marriage was becoming strained because I was trying to be everything I was ‘supposed’ to be and more and my husband felt like he was being forgotten and in a way… he was. I loathed myself so much for not being strong enough… Because I knew how I was ‘supposed’ to feel but didn’t. You see, the truth was; though I love my family unconditionally and would do anything for them… I couldn’t find it in myself to put them before my career… my education… My Ambition…  and I thought that made me the worst kind of person.

Thomas though… Thomas’ work helped me realized that it doesn’t matter what society says I’m ‘supposed’ to feel. I feel what I feel and that is that. I shouldn’t be ashamed that I’m not the family obsessed society norm Mother who wants nothing but to stay at home and raise children (which there is nothing wrong with. It is a difficult and thankless job and I applaud anyone who is capable of it (man/woman/other)). It is okay for me to want more. Its alright for me to feel the way I do and want to make a life for myself. To define myself as more than just a mom. I don’t have to hate myself for wanting to be the best version of myself. 

Sanders Sides helped me realize that and when I did. I sat down with my husband, fully expecting him to leave me as I explained to him that my career and education would come first. And… he didn’t. In fact, he seemed relieved. He asked if I could slow down a bit instead of going full sprint towards my goals. He said that he wasn’t career orientated and was only going to school because his priority was family (which he was struggling with as well because as the ‘man’ in the relationship society said it wasn’t supposed to be). That he understood and would help me where ever I need it just as he expected me to do the same for him as he was family oriented and that was his priority. 

This is not to say I neglect my family now, I don’t. It is simply that my priorities have shifted and thus has become less stressful and toxic allowing for a more healthy environment for all of us. My husband and I are better than ever. We have regular family nights so as not to overwhelm or neglect anyone… 

And honestly, I’m more happy than ever. Ambition has ruled over me for so long, forcing me into this constant cycle of overwork and self loathing until I accepted it… I accepted it thanks to Thomas’ work making me see that its alright to just be who I am. So, I owe a lot to Sanders Sides. 

I might not have a Virgil but I do quite like the idea of Ambition being a side that may have been dark previously… But I hope I answered your question and didn’t ramble on too much

“Honey, I just really don’t like the idea of you living in your own in such a big city!” Your mother chastises you over the phone. “You didn’t even leave home for college, and now this? Moving to Seoul on your own? I understand that this job is important to you but still… I wish you’d be realistic.”

Hard as it was, you try your best to be understanding of your mother’s concerns. It’s true that you’ve never been away from home before, but you aren’t incompetent. It had merely been a matter of money, and nothing more. And now, freshly out of college, you’ve been lucky enough to land a job with one of Seoul’s top marketing firms. You have your parents to thank for giving you the tools you needed to succeed - helping pay for school and even supporting you through unpaid summer internships and grant opportunities - you’re nothing but grateful for that. That’s why you always keep your mouth shut as your mother frets over your well-being, that’s why you bit back your protestations and sighs. It’s all in an effort to spare her feelings.

“Mama,” you finally renege, “you and dad have taught me so well. I’m old enough now, to be on my own. Besides, this is my dream job! I’m making way more money than a recent college graduate ought to be.”

The deep resigned sigh from the other end of the line tells you your mother is out of steam for today.

“What about getting one of those pets?” She suggests finally. “One of those hybrids you know? I’m sure your father and I would feel much more secure if you had a watchdog. And hybrid’s can even phone the police if something happens!”

You laugh quietly at your mother’s words. You suppose you were lucky, at least, that she wasn’t insisting on you finding a boyfriend.

“Mama, you know I don’t have the time for a hybrid. They’re a lot of work…”

“Oh I know sweetie but still it would just make us feel so much better, you’re so far away.”

Biting your lip, you glance at your watch. If you don’t wrap up this conversation soon, you are absolutely going to be late for work. And at only a few weeks into this new job, that’s something you simply can’t afford.

“Aish, alright mom, I’ll at least consider it.” You placate her. “But as of right now, I’ll have to let you go. I don’t want to be late for work!”

You bid your mother farewell and agree to talk at the same time the next day. She seems pacified by your promise to think over her request, and thus the end of the conversation goes quickly and smoothly. Soon you find yourself stepping out of your car, and striding inside the large building that houses your corporate offices.

You like your job, you truly do, but Monday’s are always the hardest. Not because it’s the start of a new week or anything, but just because every Monday your floor had a little team building meeting. One where you had to participate and talk to your fellow coworkers. It was mostly fine, but there were one or two people you could do without. Namely…

“I just didn’t know what else to do!” ahh, yes. Soojung.

Your absolute least favorite human being in this entire fucking office.

“He was a monster, I swear.” She’s seated at the large conference room table, a large gaggle of girls standing around her, listening to her speak.

“All he did was bite me and scratch me up whenever I went near him! I feel bad, you know? I’m apparently the third person to give him up! The shelter says they have no option but to put him down.” The girls around her nod in understanding.

“I know there are some hybrid shelters that are no-kill, but I just couldn’t stand to have him around for one second more!”

Holy shit, did she just say that the hybrid shelter was going to put someone down? Like… a genuine living, speaking, near-human hybrid?

What the fuck.

“Soojung,” you interrupt, and the entire group of girls looks at you in surprise. “Where did you say you dropped your hybrid off?”

And that’s how you found yourself standing at the front of a hybrid shelter as soon as your shift had come to a close. There was no way in fucking hell that you could just let some hybrid be murdered. Seriously. What the fuck? Still though, you eye the door somewhat apprehensively. You know you don’t exactly have what it takes to be the owner of a hybrid, but still… anything has to be better than being dead right? Right?

You draw a deep sigh and make your way inside. A small, plump woman greets you as you walk in and you do your best to swallow your nerves and smile at her.

“What can I do for you today, sweetie?” She coos, and you instantly feel uncomfortable. This is definitely a mistake, but you can’t bring yourself to leave. A literal life is on the line here.

“Actually, I just overheard some of my coworkers talking today. About how much they love their hybrids. I’m thinking about adopting one?”

“Well, you’ve absolutely come to the right place! Let me show you our--”

“Actually, I was wondering if you… well I read online that you guys are a, you know, a kill shelter,” the woman winces at your words, “and I was just wondering if you have any… I mean, like any hopeless cases. I just really would hate to see a hybrid put down you know? When I could provide them a good home.”

The woman’s face pinches up in a wholly unattractive way. As if your claims had personally offended her.

“There’s one, but you don’t want him.” she says.

“I mean, I think I can decide that for myself, no?” Is your curt reply.

The woman shrugs angrily, and steps out from behind her desk.

“Fine then. Follow me.”

She leads you through the showroom of animals, and you do your best not to look at anything but your feet. You don’t want to be persuaded into getting more than one hybrid, you’re a sucker for puppy dog eyes, and here they have them, well… literally.

Soon enough you’re brought into a back room, it seems to be for employees only, and your stomach quickly turns by what you see there.

A dark hybrid cat. Locked in a cage much too small for him. His hands are bruised and bloodied, as if he had tried - unsuccessfully - to fight his way out of his current predicament. He’s curled up in what looks like restless sleep, but as soon as you enter his eyes shoot open.

“This is him.” The woman tells you simply.

“Great,” you gesture to the cat before you, “I would like this hybrid, please and thank you.”

The woman gapes at you.

“You don’t even want to speak with him first?”

Your eyes shift briefly to the caged man, watching the way he follows your every move. There’s a small flicker of hope in the cat’s eyes, and so you shake your head.

“No, I don’t think that will be necessary. He seems perfect. Exactly what I’m looking for.”

She gives you a scowl before motioning for you to follow her back to the front. There’s way more paperwork than you thought there would be. And it’s over an hour later when another employee finally brings out the hybrid to you.

“No one likes a girl with a saviour complex you know.” The woman mutters towards you and you flinch slightly when another worker cheerily tells you to enjoy ‘your’ new hybrid. Your discomfort only grows when you see the cats eyes flash with anger.

It’s only later, when you and the cat are finally sitting in your car, that you realize what you’ve done.

“Oh my fucking god. What the fuck.” You mutter, glancing at the literal cat person next to you.

He gazes back, a look of uninterested confusion on his face.

“Why are you acting like this, human?” He says finally, and the low timbre of his voice takes you by surprise.

“What?” is the only thing you can think to say.

“You’re being annoying. Why are you being annoying?”

“Sorry.” You snap at him, sarcasm dripping from your voice. “When I woke up this morning I didn’t realize I was going to become responsible for another person’s wellbeing, thanks. Color me a little overwhelmed.”

The cat before you pauses slightly for a moment, his head tilting to the side, ears twitching. He says nothing for a while, and you grow more and more antsy with every passing second. What was this cat playing at, seriously?

“What?!” You finally lose your temper, but the cat merely smirks at you slightly, as if your outburst was exactly what he had wanted.

“You called me ‘person’ you know.” He says.

“Well aren’t you?” You try to collect yourself as you pull out of the parking lot.

“Not in the eyes of the law.”

Oh shit.

“Seem like a person to me.” You mutter under your breath. “Bitchy like a person.”

The cat scoffs.

“You passed the pet store.” He says, in lieu of replying.

“Why would I need to go to the pet store?”

The cat looks at you, incredulous before starting off.

“A collar? A leash? Fucking food? You aren’t put together in the slightest, there’s no way you have all that shit at home.”

You’re offended, but only because he’s right. You screech your car around in a dangerous U-turn while the cat beside you hisses and digs his claws into the fabric of your seat, tearing up some of the padding.

“What the FUCK are you doing?” The hybrid yells. “Are you trying to kill us?”

You pull calmly into the pet store, satisfied by the way you’ve worked the cat up.

“Mmm, not today. Let’s go.” You say, opening the car door. Again you’re greeted with a dubious look from your new companion.

“I can’t go in there without a leash and a collar.” He says finally.

“Oh geez.” You mumble. “I’m so not prepared for this and I’m going to kill us both.”

“Reassuring.”

“Shut up, cat.” You snipe. “If I leave you here for like, two seconds will you be okay? I’ll run in and get a leash and collar so you can come in too and pick out what you want.”

The cat looks surprised but nods.

You crank the window down and motion for him to do the same. He doesn’t.

You roll your eyes and begin to walk away from the car anyway. Whatever. Let him suffocate. Whatever.

Suddenly a thought occurs to you and you spin quickly on your heels, leaning down to peer through the window of the car.

“What color?” You ask, and the cat tilts his head, his dark feline ears twitching once more.

“What?”

“Like, what color leash and collar do you want? Any requests?”

The cat ponders for a moment, and you’re unsure whether he’s mulling over the question or the fact you’ve bothered to get his opinion in the first place.

“Black.” He says finally. “Leather, if they have it. Oh, and I’m a medium.”

You nod and give the cat a small thumbs up before hurrying inside. You’re not sure you trust your new companion in the car by himself, and so you try to work quickly. You locate the collars and leashes with relative ease, and try your best to pick out one that the cat waiting for you would like.

It’s no more than five minutes before you’re outside the shop again, and the cat merely shrugs at your choices for him. You’re a bit disheartened, but you try not to let it show too much. He’s supposed to be a problem cat or whatever. It is what it is.

He gets out of the car and stands before you. You’re a bit surprised at how tall the hybrid is. And it would take a fool not to notice how handsome, as well. You hope your cheeks don’t go as red as they feel, but when the cat raises his eyebrow at you, you know you’ve been caught.

“Here.” You say, holding out his collar and hoping he will accept the change of subject.

He takes it and quickly fastens it around his neck. It fits perfectly, and you notice that the cat gives a satisfied hum as he glances at his reflection in your car’s side mirror.

“S-Sorry.” You mutter as you hold out the leash to clip it onto his collar. Something about this feels so incredibly wrong, and it twists your gut. Your hands shake slightly as you try and attach the leash, your fingers coming in contact with the skin of the cat’s throat. The touch alarms the both of you, but neither of you elect to mention it directly.

“It’s fine. Rules are rules.” The hybrid tells you, gazing down at you. It’s an oddly intimate moment, and suddenly you step back, hoping to distance yourself from the man - the hybrid in front of you.

“Right.” You say, too loudly. “Let’s go.”

Despite you being the one with the leash, the cat is definitely leading. You let him. He knows more about this than you do.

“Here.” He says, stopping in front of a bright yellow machine. “You need to make me a dog tag.”

“A cat tag.” You mumble, earning a disinterested glance from the cat.

“Just hurry and make one. I’m not supposed to be going around without it.”

“Okay well… What type do you like? Just pick whatever.”

The cat hesitates once more, eyes trailing over the rack. He eventually selects a simple silver circle, and you nod your head in agreement. It would look absolutely gorgeous against the cat’s beautifully tan skin.

You place the tag into the machine, jumping slightly as it whirs to life, your action making the hybrid shake his head.

You dutifully follow the directions, typing in your address and apartment number and your telephone, lest the cat get lost and needs to be returned. You pause however when the final question appears:

What’s your companion’s name?

Oh fuck. You didn’t even know his name. You fucking suck.

“I’m sorry,” you start, glancing at him, “but I don’t know your name.”

The cat looks surprised, but not angry like you were expecting.

“What do you mean?” He questions. “You pick it.”

Your face must betray how horrified you are because his ears twitch at you, something you’re beginning to learn means he thinks you’re acting in an unexpected way.

“No, that’s too much.” You say finally. “You’re like, a whole adult man. You can pick your fucking name.”

The cat is still for a moment, as if he’s expecting you to laugh and take the opportunity away.

“I’m serious.” You reassure. “If you don’t pick, I’ll write something embarrassing. You look like a ‘Fuzzball’ to me.”

The cat moves faster than you’ve ever seen him.

You peek over his shoulder as he types in his name and then hits the ‘print’ button before you can change your mind. It’s with utter fascination that the two of you watch the laser etch out a beautiful looking ‘Yoongi’ onto the dainty tag.

“Yoongi?” you say, rolling the name over your tongue. “That’s a really beautiful name.  It really suits you.”

“Thanks.” Is his only response, as he scuffs his shoe along the ground.

You clip the little tag to his collar with some difficulty, but Yoongi doesn’t complain. He simply watches you there before him, eyeing interestedly the way your tongue peeks out of the corner of your mouth in concentration.

After that, Yoongi seems to be in higher spirits, carefully piling his wants and needs into your cart. You feel a little desperate, watching the price tag increase in your mind’s eye, but you know you have enough saved away, and seeing Yoongi look… well, as close to happy as you imagine he can get is enough of a reward for the hit your wallet is about to receive.

When you push you your carriage into the bedding section you watch Yoongi shrug and shake his head.

“I don’t need one of these.” He says to you, firmly.

“Oh? Why not? Do you prefer sleeping on the floor or something?” You puzzle.

The cat laughs for the first time since you’ve gotten him. A wide genuine laugh that pulls at the edge of his lips and makes him smile - really smile - for the first time. Your heart skips a beat in your chest.

“No.” He says, eyeing you. “I want to sleep in your bed. With you.”

You think you might pass out.

“Excuse me?” you choke out, weakly.

“Oh you know me,” he says, practically reveling in your surprise, “I’m a real big cuddler.”

With that, Yoongi winks and walks away. Leaving you to pick up your broken pieces all alone.

blurb: Grayson Dolan was the CEO of Rothschester Global Investments LTD, the biggest financial company in New York, being his personal assistant was stressful and not because of the workload. He was domineering, blunt and took all of your work for-granted.

You’d been working as an assistant to Grayson Dolan for 18 months now, and it was the worst and only “real job” you’d ever had. You’d graduated with a degree in Business Studies only a month prior to starting your job. “An excellent opportunity working for such a prestigious business man, you should be excited (Y/N)!” Your friends told you, and to think you actually believed them. Working for the “prestigious” Mr G.B Dolan was living hell, you were running around like an unpaid intern, he expects coffee as he comes into the office and an updated schedule all before 8am which is completely understandable, he’s a busy man, except he never shows an ounce of gratitude and at this point you’re not sure if the words “Thank you,” have ever left his lips.

“So, you decided to come into work today, Miss (Y/S/N)?” You looked up to see your boss leaned against the door frame leading into your office. He could clearly see you were startled, he was never there before you were. He brought his hands from his pockets and folded them over his chest.

“Sorry?” You questioned him, his coffee in your hand . You’d taken yesterday off work to attend to a family event planned months in advance. He chuckled in annoyance, shifting his position. “You didn’t show up yesterday. I can’t recall seeing you at any point during my extremely busy day but to be perfectly honest it was a relief, although I did miss my coffee.” Your cheeks began to flush, you hated him with every fibre in your body.

“I had planned this weeks in advance, Mr Dolan. It was all arranged. Anna told me she’d arranged cover for me and you’d approved it-“

“Well maybe you should arrange your own cover instead of getting Anna to do all of your work for you.” He cut you off. God, was such a hypocrite.

You smiled and calmly said “If you’d have checked the weekly schedu-“ but he continued to cut you off.

“Now why would I check my schedule when that’s exactly what I pay you for?” He pushed himself away from the frame stepping towards you and grasped the coffee cup in your hand. ”If you keep slipping up you won’t have a job to take “necessary” days off from.” He stared into your eyes still holding the cup, he was trying to intimidate you. He took his coffee and began making his way back through your office to his door. You followed putting your belongings on your desk.

“Yes, Sir,” You whispered under your breath. Well, you thought you’d whispered it.

Grayson stopped dead in his tracks.

With a clenched jaw he let out a low sigh as you looked up at him, realising he’d heard your comment.

He looked down at his large gold watch. “There are a few files on your desk, update them. Shouldn’t take you that long.” Next to your purse he’d placed a huge stack of client records, you looked up at him in disbelief. “I want them in an hour.” Cuffing the sleeves on his white dress shirt he stepped into his office, slamming his door as he went.

With 5 minutes to spare you walked through his door, files in hand. “All done, Mr Dolan.” He glanced over at you and then checked the time. “Mhmm.” He grunted. You placed the stack onto his desk. “Would you like me to file them away for you? Or do you think you can manage that.” You smiled sweetly, you’d had enough of his bullshit. As they say, fight fire with fire. Your comment caught him of guard and he coughed bringing a fist over his mouth to guard his smirk.

“I think you can tell I’m too busy to do that right now, Miss (Y/S/N).” He said, standing up from his dark leather chair and pushing it back under his desk, folding his arms and leaning over the back of it, watching you as he did. “Sorry for the trouble but it’d be such a help to me if you did, there’s just not enough time in the day is there?” He smirked, he wasn’t doing a single thing of importance. He was literally taking time out of his day to watch you put files back, rubbing it in your face that he had so much power over you, very much aware of his ability to control everything you did for him.

You couldn’t refuse the request, he was your boss after all. The only way to get back at him was to appease him. If you stormed out he’d get what he wanted and you definitely weren’t going to crack.

“Yes, Mr Dolan.” With a look of hatred you picked up the stack and walked over to the cabinet at the other end of the room. When you’d placed them you turned back to find Mr Dolan sat, arms folded on the edge of his desk. “Will that be all?” You asked bluntly. Your boss smiled and shook his head. “Come here.” He beckoned and you slowly made your way towards him.

When you were around a foot away from him he unfolded his arms and picked a pen out of his shirt pocket and began twiddling it through his long fingers. You watched the movement in his hand, hypnotised. His head rolled up and your eyes were almost level, him still being slightly taller even when he was leant against something. He gave a low chuckle and passed the pen over his thumb one last time before dropping it to the floor, right in front of your feet. You knew he’d don’t it on purpose.

“Pick that up for me would you?”

Two can play at this game, you thought. You gave him an angelic smile and began to bend down keeping eye contact the whole time you did. You grasped the pen and made your way back up, placing the pen straight in his pocket and nibbling your lip.

“Now, will that be all, Sir?”

He stood up, towering over you, hands in pockets.

“Go and close that door.” He growled.

a prompt mayhaps: Viktor is a big-time lingerie designer and Yuuri is a model ;)

finally getting around to this one! s/o to everyone on discord who aided and abetted ;)

In retrospect, it really should have been more obvious. After all, the brand’s name is Secrets by V, for crying out loud.

But at the time of their first meeting, Yuuri had been nothing but nervous. It had been his first shoot as a History Maker – the industry nickname for the beautiful, sexy models of all genders who advertised Secrets by V’s ultra-luxe lingerie. The new campaign that season was fairytale and true love-themed, to better highlight the romantic details on the new Stammi Vicino line. Yuuri had rushed in late that morning, no thanks to the traffic, and then watched as two female models posed together in each other’s arms, clad in coordinated bra and panty sets with wings on their shoulders.

(He’s still not sure how he managed to join their ranks. He’s just too mild-mannered and plain – too Clark Kent, no Superman.)

“Are you looking for something?” someone asks, and Yuuri turns to see the most beautiful man looking at him curiously. His silver fringe falls into one of his icy blue eyes, and he’s clad in a simple navy suit, clutching a tray of coffee.

“Y-Yeah!” Yuuri stammers. “I’m the new model? Yuuri Katsuki?”

The man hums, consults a clipboard, and nods, pointing to a door to the side. “Go through there and they’ll get you ready for the shoot.”

Yuuri nods his throat feeling more and more like sandpaper the longer he stands there and watches this man scrutinise him. “Th-Thanks,” he says, feeling his face redden. “Are you – do you work here?”

The man raises an eyebrow and nods.

“Are you in charge of this shoot?” wonders Yuuri.

The man laughs, shaking his head. “No, I’m just watching.”

“So you’re an intern?”

The man’s eyes widen briefly, but he quickly recovers and nods, laughing. “You could say that,” he says. “I’m Viktor.”

“Yuuri,” says Yuuri, and loses himself in the brilliance of Viktor’s smile as he shakes his hand.

Viktor shows up to his other shoots. It makes Yuuri feel a little better, to see a friendly face. But as it’s also the most beautiful friendly face that he’d ever seen, it also makes him a lot more nervous.

The new line after Stammi Vicino is called Intoxicated. Yuuri is posing for his set with another male model. Christophe Giacometti is Swiss, extremely flirtatious, and a very well-known History Maker. In fact, he even has his own cologne. The only reason Yuuri knows that is because the man is drenched in it right now, and the scent of patchouli and vanilla is threatening to overwhelm Yuuri’s senses. 

“So you’re the new model everyone’s been talking about,” Christophe remarks in between shots, as the director instructs them into a new pose.

“I am?” wonders Yuuri, blinking at him and vaguely trying to devise some non-aggressive way to inform the man that his cologne is overbearing.

Christophe nods. “Not a lot of people can turn Viktor’s head like that, you know.”

“Viktor?” echoes Yuuri. “The intern?”

Christophe snorts. “Not the intern, the –”

“Yuuri!” Viktor’s voice chirps from off-set. “I brought coffee!”

Yuuri can hear the director sigh and suggest everyone take five. He clambers up from his current position and puts his robe back on, walking over to get his cup of coffee from Viktor. It’s warm, and done just the way he likes it.

“How did you…”

Viktor’s smile is enigmatic. “I just do,” he says. “How are you liking the sets?”

“Oh, this?” Yuuri pulls his robe back slightly to reveal the briefs that he’s currently modelling, not sure if he’s imagining the small intake of breath from the intern standing next to him. “They’re pretty comfortable, but not really my style.”

“What is your style?” wonders Viktor.

Yuuri shrugs. “Not blue and purple sequins, at least. Maybe something classier? I…. I actually liked Secrets by V’s spring collection from a few years back. Especially the one with the mesh and crystals.”

He definitely doesn’t mishear the thoughtful hum that Viktor makes at that, but he doesn’t think much of it, because he has to finish up his coffee before the break ends. It burns at his tongue a little, but that’s at least better than drinking it cold after the shoot ends.

After he finishes his cup, he shrugs off his robe and rejoins Christophe on set, not noticing Viktor’s gaze lingering on him the entire time.

“Doing anything after this?” wonders Viktor after a shoot for the next line, called Les Parfums des Fleurs. Yuuri had been posing with countless amounts of silk flowers for the past three hours, and is looking forward to nothing more than crawling into bed and watching Netflix.

“No,” he admits. Viktor smiles at that.

“Would you want to grab something to eat with me, then?”

Yuuri nods, and Viktor beams, and as Yuuri goes back to the dressing room to change into street clothes, he wonders why he can feel everyone’s eyes on him as he leaves.

Viktor takes him to a really nice bistro down the street from the location where they were doing the photoshoot. It serves delicious Mediterranean cuisine, and even the lunch prices are staggering enough for Yuuri to do a double-take at the menu.

“Don’t worry,” says Viktor. “I’m buying.”

“Isn’t the internship with Secrets unpaid?” wonders Yuuri vaguely.

“Don’t worry about it,” insists Viktor, his cheeks now flushed pink as he hides his face behind his menu.

Yuuri frowns. “Are you sure? I’d hate to impose –”

“Yuuri, please.” Viktor sets down the menu and places his hand on Yuuri’s. The places where their skin touch feel warm, almost tingling.

“O-okay.” He bites his lip. “If you say so.”

“I insist,” replies Viktor. 

Yuuri’s brows furrows. “Why, though? I’m just another model.”

Viktor’s eyes go wide at that, and he shakes his head. “No, you’re not,” he says. Yuuri wants to tell him that he isn’t worthy of being wined and dined like this, even for lunch – in fact, he feels woefully out of place sitting in jeans and a t-shirt in this upscale bistro in the first place. But Viktor blushes again, his blue eyes sparkling, and Yuuri realises then with a jolt that maybe Viktor feels just as nervous about this as he does. 

So he smiles. “Okay,” he says. What should they talk about? Work? The weather? Those both seem like terrible ideas. “Any recommendations?” he asks, gesturing to the menu.

Viktor breaks out into a relieved smile. “Anything on that menu is great, but I find I like their hummus and falafel the best.”

Yuuri finds himself agreeing roughly twenty minutes later.

The line that Secrets by V is showcasing for its annual show is called On Love. Each set of lingerie in the line is a conceptualisation of some form of love – Agape, Pragma, Ludus,Philautia, Mania, Storge, Philia.

And Eros.

Yuuri loves the Eros set. It’s a bustier and brief set and it clings to him like a second skin, fitting him perfectly – as if the designer had made it with his measurements specifically in mind. There are splashes of crystal at one shoulder of the bodice and at his waist, gossamer panelling intersected by black satin, and a small skirt to one side that flares at the hip. The briefs are also black, though along the back there’s a significant mesh panel crisscrossed by black satin ribbons.

Viktor delivers this set to him, his cheeks tinged pink as he pushes the box into Yuuri’s hands. He’s now seated on the other side of the screen in this tiny dressing room, and Yuuri can feel his heartbeat pounding in his ribcage as he contemplates the fact that the most beautiful intern in the world wants to see him in this outfit. With a slight wobble in his legs, he slips into a set of nude flats and steps out from behind the screen.

“What do you think?” he asks, watching Viktor’s jaw drop in response.

“Um,” says the man, the pink flush in his cheeks turning crimson. “You look…. good.”

“Just good?” wonders Yuuri, almost a little playful, as he turns around to give Viktor the full experience, thrilling as he catches a glimpse of Viktor’s flabbergasted expression in the mirror. 

“Extraordinary,” amends Viktor, his voice a little hoarse. “Ravishing. Captivating.”

Yuuri feels a strange warmth tingling through him, spurring him to step closer to Viktor, to keep him in his gaze. “Good,” he breathes, a sudden urge to trace the line of Viktor’s jaw with one finger threatening to overwhelm him. 

For a moment they just stare at one another. And then Viktor steps forward, closing the distance between them, and Yuuri can feel his breath ghosting against his cheek. He can smell Viktor’s cologne; it’s not patchouli and vanilla, and he breathes in a deep lungful of it.

“Yuuri, I – I should tell you something.” Viktor’s voice is hesitant. Yuuri looks up into his eyes, trying to figure out what it is that Viktor wants to divulge. He opens his mouth as if to ask, but then the door opens and one of the runway assistants pokes their head in.

“Mr Katsuki? You’re up in – oh. Mr Nikiforov. I’m so sorry. I’ll tell them Mr Katsuki’s busy –” and they leave. And Yuuri turns to see Viktor slowly flushing bright red where he stands.

Yuuri’s voice sounds strange to his own ears when he finally speaks up again. “Viktor Nikiforov?” he asks. “You’re V?”

Viktor laughs, sheepishly rubbing at his nape. “Surprise?”

Yuuri gapes at him. It’s as if everything in the world has suddenly shifted three inches to his left, and he doesn’t know how to get it back – or even if he should. “So you…. you designed this?” he asks, gesturing to the bustier. 

“You loved the other set from a few years back, so I thought I’d revive it a little,” replies Viktor, tilting his head curiously to the side, fixing Yuuri with that intense, beautiful blue gaze. “What do you think?”

Yuuri smiles. “I love it,” he replies, and kisses Viktor. 

For the first couple of minutes, Viktor freezes under Yuuri’s lips, but then he quickly melts, hands coming up to cup Yuuri’s face, holding him in place to deepen the kiss. Yuuri can feel (however dimly) Viktor walking him backwards, pressing him up against the wall of the dressing room. Viktor’s lips move from his to pepper kisses down his neck, and Yuuri tilted his head back and moans.

“Viktor,” he gasps, after feeling the sensation of Viktor sucking at his skin. “You’re going to leave a mark.”

Viktor pulls back to look at him with a wicked grin. “But it fits my artistic vision for your set perfectly,” he teases, his voice positively purring, and Yuuri can’t help but laugh at that.

Reaching out to tug Viktor back in, he breathes, “I’d hate to contradict your artistic vision,” and loses himself in the brilliance of Viktor’s smile as the man kisses him again.

Welcome back to an other episode of Portrait, This time i’m joined by someone i met on Instagram (find her links at the end)

She’s a talented artist from Connecticut, without further ado :

I’m Bryan, i guess i’m Bryan the girl, i’m from New Haven Connecticut and i’m 23 Years old.

When did you start drawing ?

I’ve been drawing on and off my all life but i didn’t really think of my self as an artist until after college when i had to decide on a career. I had tried a lot of different careers and none of them have really felt right. I was bored in them, so i set down and had a good long think about what i could really envisioned myself doing as a career, the only thing i could come up with was art.

The problem was that i wasn’t a very skilled artist at the time. The list of things i was afraid to even attempt to draw was very long and so tackled that list by doing a new year’s resolution to draw every single day for a year. So i did, and i started to share my work and i started forcing myself to post on Instagram twice a day which was a lot, and i would never do that nowadays [sometimes she still does tho] but i didn’t had job at the time so i drew and drew and over time i got good .

Then people started to seeing my started paying me to do art and buying my art. I think i went through and arc of not drawing at all, drawing a little bit, drawing everyday all day and now that it’s my job i don’t draw as much, because i’m doing a lot of business too.

How did you get into drawing ? (tho’)

I’ve done a lot of different types of art, I’ve done traditional figure drawing, some painting… They don’t really teach pen art in school, like in a traditional classroom, it’s not part of the foundations. I was always drawn (ha ha) to it but i didn’t have  chance to learn how to do it, so then i realized i would have to teach myself.

That’s what i worked on, i was figuring out how to make my drawings look like the drawings that i really liked in the old hatching and graving ways that i love in the renaissance…(a cute dog passed by and caught her attention:). So my challenge was to just teach my self over time, and that’s how i grew to love ink drawing : by learning out on my own.

How did you build yourself as an artist? Because there’s some construction going on. You can’t like be like « ok now i’m drawing , now i’m an artist » you know, there’s some kind of transition, like who am i as and artist, in what i do…

That’s a really hard question…

For a long time i felt so uncomfortable, saying that i was an artist. Because i either felt like i wasn’t legitimate , like i didn’t have the right to say that or like people would think that i was really egotistic or something. It feels lie saying you’re an artist carries a lot of weight to it.

And it feels like something you’re not allow to call yourself an artist, like you can’t call yourself a genius only other people can call you that and so i’m like i can’t call myself an artist other people have to decide.

But then at a certain point when it’s your career ad it’s all you do and earn a living you have to identify yourself as that. I will say that often times i will say that i’m an illustrator and not an artist. Because when you say that you’re an artist people think that you’re taking your cloth off on the street and screaming and like smearing chicken blood on your body or something but i’m just drawing so i think people get a clearer idea when i way illustrator.

How did you get your name?

Actually i used to be a musician and i remember i was on Soundcloud, way back this was like 7 years ago. I went by my full name, which is Bryan Schiavone ( Italian name ). It’s a very difficult name, and when people have name like that they somehow try to shorten them and nobody would ever be able to spell it or pronounce it so… One day i was on Soundlcoud i saw this person had a username that was whatever-Thegirl, and was like that’s so interesting i’m gonna do that for my name too. So when i started doing art i just kept the same name that i was using for my music. It’s so much simpler.

As a teacher, because you teach on Patreon and you have a podcast too, how does it feel like to teach ? You did some workshop too.

I’m still not fully comfortable with teaching because a part of me still think that in order to teach you have to be the best

A master ?

You have to be a master, and i’m not…i mean you just saw me struggling with my drawing earlier (she didn’t…she was so quick she was halfway through when i was still sketching….). I’m so afraid that i’m gonna be in this situation where a student turns to me and says how do i draw this tree ? And i go i don’t know that looks like a difficult tree… i can’t help you…. A part of being a good teacher is admitting that you don’t know how to do something and learning it with you students. It’s hard to know when to start teaching when you get to the point where you’re like : I’ve learned enough to share with people. I think it helped me just to have people ask me enough how do i do it and i started telling them and i guess that’s teaching.

And i think as a teacher you’re still learning, if you think that you’ve mastered and you’re not gonna learn from nobody any more then you’re closing yourself to new ideas and techniques.

And you’re a bad teacher and bad artist at that point…

Especially in art, you always have to learn something new, something new will always come to you.

When you began, how hard did you hustle ? How hard was it to get from Bryan to BryanThegirl ?

Oh my god, the hours that i put in , unpaid, over the past few years it’s just like… If i had known how much time it would take i would never have done it. Because i remember two years ago, i started selling my drawings for 15$ each. You know I’ve spent hours on these drawings and i was begging people to buy them every day like « i’m selling them i’m selling them ». I remember i made 100$ and i was like i’m making all this money… and even up after this past year i really couldn’t get any commissions and i kept advertising for them but nobody seemed interested. Even if they were interested they’d be so surprised of the cost which was incredibly low, like 30 dollars for a custom portrait. So they’d freak out and say « omg i don’t have money for that » and i would ask « how much money did you think you were gonna spend.

So there was a lot of just being rejected or not finding customers and then there was a lot of finding a lot of customers that would not pay me enough so i’d spend 10 hours doing something for 15$… Which is horrible and it made me unhappy but i guess i knew it was part of the journey, part of something that i had to do in order to get further along.

And then after working for hours and hours and not making money for years it all started to happen. Every body wanted commissions and i started saying no to people, i started raising the prices because i had to many request…

And you also you could afford to ask more

Because if they’d say «  i’m not gonna give it to you » then i would get more free time anyway. One time i got a commission request for a tattoo and i didn’t really wanna do it, i wasn’t interested in it so i told the guy this crazy price and he was like « OK, if that’s how much it costs » … ugh* so now i have to do this tattoo request, i’m getting a really good price but i don’t really wanna do it, it was so strange, but in the end its fine.

Nowadays after doing all this commission work, pet portrait Christmas gifts and everything i’m starting to focus more on personal projects, book projects which i find more rewarding and exciting.

Did you think that at some point you should have quit ?

I thought that every single day for about a year. It was a combination of « i’m so tired » « my neck hurts » « my hand hurts » and «  i hate this » and then also « this is crazy, i can’t do this i can’t just be an artist ». And everybody was telling me « you gonna have to get a normal job » «  it’s not realistic, you should give up ».

I was going to, but i think what happens is that the craziest people just keeps going,  all the reasonable people stop and then all the work goes to the people that stuck with it. If you can handle it financially and psychologically then you’ll probably be fine but the key is to not give up.

Yeah, i didn’t start any projects after my school so i can’t say I’m gonna quit because i didn’t do shit… you have to do this for like 2 or 3 years, get straight with your partner about it and then depending on how it goes you might wanna quit.

Yeah, you set a time frame and say « i’m gonna do everything i can in this time frame » and if i doesn’t work out then i’ll know I’ve tried everything and i don’t have to have any regrets i never have to have that dream anymore it’s dead so i can’t move on…

Even at a smaller scale when people come drawing with you and they quit after like 1 hour… that’s not it, i didn’t get here in 1 hour. It took me like 5 years and i’m not even good enough yet. So why would you quit (anything) after 1 hour ?

Everything that’s worth doing is difficult. That’s what i try to tell myself when i’m struggling with something. Would i want to do something that’s so easy that anyone could do it ? NO, the whole fun of it is knowing that you pushed through it.

Every great artist, Rembrandt like u mentioned, they did so many paintings you can’t really count the sketches and the little drawings just for fun, for learning and practice. In the end it was worth it.

What i love about these artist is that you can see their old sketches , like you can see Van Gogh, you an see his beginning sketches and say look he made « stupid » mistakes the same way i make mistakes and look at what he created…so it’s encouraging.

What feelings are you going through, right now, as an artist ?

Right now i’m at a transitional point, although i’d probably say that about every point on my career…hum

I got past the point of can i make it as an artist, can i earn a living. I answered it ; The answer is yes. So now that i’m out of that stress zone and i’m more confident on my ability to make money, the question for me is how do i wanna earn money ? What do i wanna do ?

And i’m starting to think about if i have the choice of doing commissions or working for and agency or doing publications or my own teaching/illustration, in a perfect world what does my life look like ? Because you start to be able to ask questions like that if things are going well. I’m starting to think i want to express myself more beyond just images. Like i wanna tell my story more i wanna talk about my life , i wanna talk about my feelings and i’m trying to find a way to do that. Part of it is done through being opened on social media. I also really wanna write more and illustrate things that are more personal to me and aren’t just still life and landscapes…i wanna share more of myself through my art.

Ofc that sounds like some hairy-fairy-lofty artist talk but I’ve been thinking about it a lot. How do i go from drawing apples and bananas to drawing how i feel inside?

Yeah, maybe that’s the goal we should all thrive to : expressing ourselves and tell a story.

Stories are like the heart of the human experience, it’s everything we do, all our relationships our lives…it’s all about communicating and telling stories. And i wanna contribute to that, i want my story to be a part of that because i love hearing other people’s stories.

At the end it’s tradition that i ask : if you could speak to you past-self or future-self which one would you choose and what would you say ?

My past-self. I think about that a lot because i had a really difficult childhood i was unhappy for most of my life until the past few years and….i don’t even think i would have said anything. If i had just seen as a young person that i would grow up and be OK and alive and have a career and be in love…if i just looked up at my adult self and knew that i was gonna be OK  i’d be like « i can get through this ». I don’t think anything that i could say would communicate that. When i was younger i felt so lost and alone i felt like it would never end…if i just knew it would get better then it would have been easier…

It was a very interesting evening with Bryan. I’m really glad she came to Paris, meeting her made me want to hustle more and travel more. Talking with her felt educating and inspiring. I came a stranger, with a camera and recorder, and i left with emotions and stories of an artist i now call friend.
