Prompt: “Why are you doing this to yourself?”

Another prompt for @tiredlittleoldme who requested a Supernatural fic for prompt #170

Prompt #170: “Why are you doing this to yourself?”

Sam frowned as he watched Cas skirt around Dean’s warm greeting without making eye contact, he watched the way his brother drooped behind Cas’ back, looking confused and hurt. He watched as Dean visibly pushed that vulnerability down and locked it up tight, schooling his face into the hard mask that Sam hated to see. Cas, for his part, kept on walking to the furthest shelf of the library, only the stiffness of his shoulders and the guilt in his eyes any indication that he knew exactly what he’d done.

Maybe they’d had a fight, Sam tried to reason, maybe Dean had said something stupid and just hadn’t realised it yet. They’d work it out. Jack walked in then, enquiring about lunch; Dean glanced over at Cas once, who had turned at the sound of Jack’s voice and was regarding his son with a kind smile, but when Cas still didn’t look at him, Dean left to go make sandwiches, his elbows tucked into his sides as though trying to take up as little space as possible.

Sam raised an eyebrow and then went back to his book, those two always had some kind of drama going on, it wasn’t his place to get involved, at least not until Dean actually told him that he was in love with his best friend.

A week later and things were getting worse. Dean was irritable and morose, seeming to switch between self-deprecating and angry at the world with every sip of whiskey, of which there were far more than Sam thought was wise considering that God could throw them a curveball at any minute.

Cas was drifting around the bunker like a ghost, but then would throw all of his intensity into research or Jack, making sure the boy wanted for nothing, teaching him all he knew about any topic he seemed to have even a vague interest in. Sam included himself in their lessons sometimes. They were always interesting and he had asked Cas to talk him through some of the finer points of history that he had seen several times over the years. Cas seemed to love imparting knowledge, no matter how strange the question, Cas would always answer it with seriousness and thought. He would be a good teacher, Sam thought fondly, if he ever needed a day job.

However, when it came to Dean, Cas was different. He wasn’t ignoring him, per se, but his treatment as as good as. He spoke to him in a way that was polite but curt, the way Sam spoke to the rude soccer mom who’d pushed in front of him in Wal-Mart, then given him a lecture on how he should be kind to strangers because he had no idea what they were going through. It wasn’t how one would speak to a friend, let alone the kind of friend who was bound to you by as much shared experience as those two had.

“What did you do?” Sam asked Dean one afternoon as Dean was throwing laundry into the machine.

“Do when?” Dean snapped, balling up the shirt in his hands to toss it in with more viciousness than was necessary.

“Do to Cas?” Sam clarified, “You must really have pissed him off this time, he barely looks at you.”

“Hadn’t noticed,” Dean grunted.

Sam just raised an eyebrow and waited.

Two socks and a pair of jeans later, Dean turned on him, his face flushed with anger and his eyes just a little too shiny. “I don’t know! Okay? I don’t know what I did. I thought things were fine, that we’d worked it all out in Purgatory. I thought we were getting better. But ever since Jack came back...” he trailed off and shook his head, “I just… he hates me now, I guess.”

Sam frowned. “I doubt that, you’re his best friend.”

“This isn’t high school, Sam.” Dean said, then he sighed. “I don’t even blame him, not really. Hell, you’re crazy for sticking with me this long.”

“Yeah, well… you do my laundry,” Sam said, nudging Dean with his shoulder, hoping that would be understood as the gesture of solidarity it was meant as. Judging by the slight upturn of Dean’s lips, it was. “Jerk.”

“Bitch,” came the automatic response.

Sam could only last another couple of days before seeking out Cas. Dean was in a spiral of self-loathing and jumpy around Jack, as though worried that any wrong move would antagonise Cas further, Cas barely spoke to Dean with multiple syllables any more, though he didn’t seem to be mad, on the contrary, Sam had caught Cas staring at Dean four separate times with such a heartbreaking longing that he was surprised Dean couldn’t feel it boring into his back.

“Alright, what the hell is going on between you two?” Sam demanded, barging into Cas’ room one evening when Dean had gone for a drive and Jack was deep into season 3 of Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

“I don’t know what you mean,” Cas answered, spinning round in his desk chair. His voice was calm, but icy. Sam knew a warning when he heard one but he was too angry to back off.

“Don’t pull that crap with me. Why are you treating Dean like he pissed in your coffee?”

“If Dean had actually urinated in my coffee I would be remarkably less civil,” Cas said, though he couldn’t quite meet Sam’s eyes. “Things between Dean and I are fine.”

Sam scoffed. “Right. That’s not how he tells it.”

A spark of fear lit up Cas’ eyes then, and he finally raised them to Sam’s. “What did he say?” That deep voice was suddenly so small, so unsure, and so goddamn guilty that Sam didn’t know whether to be mad at the guy or pull him in for a hug. He settled for answering the question.

“He thinks you hate him. He thinks he’s done something to piss you off but he doesn’t know what. He thinks that ever since Jack came back you’ve started to pull away and it’s killing him not knowing why.”

Cas’ bottom lip disappeared behind his teeth for a moment, then he said, “It was not my intention to hurt him.”

“So why are you doing this to him?” Sam asked, moving further into the room and sitting on the edge of the bed, “And more to the point, why are you doing this to yourself? Clearly this is making you just as miserable.”

“That’s the point.” Cas said, so quietly that Sam thought he’d misheard, when his brain replayed the words they did didn’t make any sense.

“What?”

“I have everything I could want, Sam. Do you understand? My son is alive, and Dean and I… it would be so easy to let myself be happy.”

“So why don’t you?” Sam asked, with an incredulous laugh at this whole ridiculous thing.

Cas looks at him then, mournful and afraid, and Sam stops laughing. Cas looks like he’s about to cry, and Sam doesn’t even know if he can cry but he knows that he definitely doesn’t want it to happen.

“Because I don’t want to leave.”

Sam shook his head, thoroughly confused. “I feel like I’m missing something here,” he said. “You know we’re not gonna kick you out, right?”

“I made a deal with the Empty, Sam. For Jack. He would go to Heaven when he died, so he could be with his mother and the Empty would get me. It said it would come for me when I let myself be happy. So… I can’t. We still have so much to do. I can’t just vanish in the middle of this apocalypse. I can’t leave Jack. I can’t abandon Dean.”

“From what Dean said before he feels pretty abandoned.” Sam said, though he was reeling from Cas’ words. Cas made a deal with the Empty? “And Jack says that he was in the Empty, with Billie. That sounds to me like your deal has already been broken.”

“I can’t risk that.” Cas said, pleading now, like he was begging Sam to understand. And Sam did. Oh it cut at something in his core, but he did understand. “Jack also said that he knew he would be sent back. He was in the Empty to protect him from Chuck, not to keep him from Heaven.”

“Then we’ll find another way to break it.” Sam decided, “because you can’t keep doing this to Dean. He hates himself because he thinks he’s done something and doesn’t know how to fix it. You need to tell him about this.”

“I can’t,” Cas said immediately, though he looked torn. “We have more important things to worry about right now.”

“If you don’t, I will,” Sam threatened. “Because you’re crazy if you don’t think that this is already causing problems. Even without knowing what it is, Dean is miserable and distracted. At least if he knows he’ll have some kind of direction. And also,” he stood, pointing a finger into Cas’ face. “Your happiness matters. And we are going to fix this because you deserve it. After everything that we’ve been through, after everything you’ve done that saved a life or helped someone, you deserve to be happy for whatever time we’ve got left.”

Chapter 170 :Enjoy the Silence

Characters: Law, Ruby, Penguin Rating: Teen Warnings: Flirting, Fluff, Language Notes: hella. Full Story

“Are you going to quit pining and hold her hand?” Penguin said in boredom.

“I’m not pining.”

“You are.” He threw some coins onto the middle of the table. “You’re staring at her ass right now.”

Law scoffed. “I was not. I was just thinking that she looks different with shorter hair.”

“It took you a month to realize that?”

“I was busy.”

Penguin snickered and Law threw some coins on the table.

“Hey guys,” Ruby appeared with a popsicle. “Playing poker?”

“Wanna join?” Penguin asked and she shook her head.

“You saw what happened last year.”

“You were hardly a bad luck charm for us.”

“I actually won money that night,” Law said. “You know, before you all were kidnapped.”

“Shut up.” Penguin threw a grape at him, which he caught easily and ate it.

“Alright kids,” Ruby said and sat at the table. “Be nice.”

“I am.” They both said. Ruby hummed and shoved her popsicle in her mouth.

“I didn’t know we had those,” Penguin said.

She took it out of her mouth. “Just got some,” she said. “Multi-flavors.” She stuck it back into her mouth and bit off the top. “Don’t mind me, I’m just watching you two lose money.”

“I’m doing fine,” Law said and showed his hand. Penguin groaned. “See.”

“Uh-huh. Buy me something pretty with your money.”

“This is my money,” he scoffed.

“So?”

“Alright, tone it down you two.” Penguin ate another grape. “Ruby, you know the rules.”

“I never listened to them anyway. I’ll leave you both to blowing your money.” She stood up and shoved the popsicle in her mouth.

“What’s “the rules?”” Law asked when Ruby was out of earshot.

“No obnoxious flirting when around others.”

“Her telling me to buy her what she wants is flirting?”

“In her own weird way.” Law frowned. “Don’t worry, you usually don’t let her get away with it. Mostly because you just give her gifts without her asking.”

“I...spoil her?”

“You sure do, dude.”

Law groaned. “I’ve gone soft.”

“Sure have.” Penguin reached over and patted his head. “Now hurry up and deal.”

“Are you eating before dinner?” Law teased Ruby as she shoved chopsticks in her mouth.

“Maybe.” She swallowed and placed her bowl of rice down. “What are you doing?”

“Eating before dinner.” Ruby grinned and picked up her bowl of rice, handing it over to him. He took it from her, digging in with the chopsticks. “Are you planning on going out tonight?”

“Nah,” she said simply.

“Oh?”

“I kinda just want to relax tonight. Don’t feel like putting on going out makeup or, like, non-comfy clothes. What about you?”

“Not in the mood to go out,” he said, chewing on his food.

“Ah,” Ruby grinned. “Well, I planned on hanging out on deck tonight. You know, relax, look at the stars, all that good stuff. You’re welcome to join me, if you didn’t already have your own plans.”

He did, but that sounded better. “Sure.” He handed her the bowl of rice back. “Sounds good.”

Ruby opened her mouth but was interrupted by a very annoyed, “Are you eating before dinner?!” Followed by a huffy Clione. Ruby giggled and started to walk out of the kitchen with her bowl of rice.

“See you guys later.”

Law opened the door to his deck, noticing Ruby right away. She stood there in grey sweatpants and a white tank top. Along with what looked like a bottle of juice in her hands. She looked cute, especially with her hair up in a small bun that she could only make with her shorter hair.

“You look great.” Law cleared his throat. Ruby turned and looked at him curiously.

“I’m wearing sweats,” she chuckled. “And I’ve got a bottle of orange juice in my hand. I couldn’t even go hard and get a glass of wine.”

“You look great,” he repeated and she smiled at him. “Compared to a month ago, you’re starting to look like yourself again.”

“Thanks,” she sighed and lifted herself on the rail of the sub. She sat down, swinging her feet back and forth. Law looked her over nervously. If she fell into the water, there’d be no saving her. “You don’t gotta look so anxious, you let me do this all the time.”

“You’re lying.”

“...no I’m not.”

He gave her a hard stare and she giggled. He walked over to her and grabbed her by her hips, lifting her up (causing her to squeak) and off the railing. “You’ll kill yourself.”

“This really isn’t necessary,” came her flustered voice. “I can stand on my own, you know.” He set her down and she adjusted her tank top. Her face was flushed and she had an embarrassed crease in her brows. She let out a long drawn out sigh. “Any other way you want to ruin my fun tonight?”

“Just by hanging out with you.”

“Great.” She walked off towards her sunbathing chair and plopped down on it. “Well?”

“Well? Well what?”

“Are you gonna sit with me or not?”

Law hesitated for a moment before walking over to her. He supposed it was fine. It was nighttime, most of the crew was off the sub, and it’s not like the whole crew hadn’t seen them flirt before. Sitting next to each other was hardly anything, anyway.

He sat next to her, close enough that he could smell her dulled perfume. “Did we do this often?”

“Hm? Oh. Well...sometimes, I suppose. Most nights we would just...go to bed.”

“No staring at the stars?”

“No poetry either.” He rolled his eyes at her and she giggled. “No, we didn’t really do extravagant things, although I guess this is hardly extravagant. I was just happy with falling asleep next to someone I could trust.” She smiled. “And someone I could steal all the blankets from and they wouldn’t complain.”

“How many blankets do you have?”

“Many. I get cold at night. You’d complain about my cold feet. We ended up getting separate blankets.”

“Ah. Where are you storing all your stuff?”

“Around. I don’t have too much. Mostly clothes.”

“And shoes, I assume.”

“Not as much as I used to. I got rid of a lot of them.”

“Because of your foot?”

“Kinda. I just knew I wasn’t going to wear them often, so I got rid of most of them. Same with the clothes.”

“I see,” he frowned.

“Don’t give me that look. I already got that look from you. It’s fine, Law. It really wasn’t a big deal and I did have way too much clothes. It’s okay, I’m not upset over it.”

“If you say so.” He muttered.

“I do,” she gave him a toothy grin. “If you want, I can talk about my other clothes.”

“That’s not necessa-”

“So, I recently bought this crop top, and it’s green, you know? My fave color. And I started to think…”

Law didn’t hold back his grin as she rambled on about her clothes. She seemed happy. Law took a deep breath and felt bold for a moment. While Ruby was talking and staring up at the stars that shone in her eyes, he let his fingers brush against hers. She didn’t move, or flinch, or even show any sign of recognition of what he did. So, he kept going, his index finger wrapped around her pinky. He started to feel a little too bold, until her pinky wrapped around his.

He watched the smallest smile tug at the end of her lips. It was something that made his chest feel lighter. Made his confidence come back. She looked beautiful in the light from both the docks and the sky, and the way those lights reflected in her lip gloss was incredibly appealing. But that was definitely too bold to think about. Too risky. He’d settle for their fingers. That was safe.

Her smile grew for a moment. “Yes?” She questioned, not hiding her amusement. He hesitated, pulling back his fingers, but Ruby grabbed his whole hand, clasping his gently. He had to remain calm and confident. He wouldn’t let Ruby know of his anxiety.

“Nothing.”

Ruby’s grin widened and she chuckled. “You’re cute, you know that? You know I know you way better than you remember.”

Law blushed and looked away from her face. She chuckled again, squeezing his hand. He relaxed, he knew she knew what he was thinking, what he wanted. He sighed and rubbed her fingers against his. “I’m not cute.”

Ruby laughed. She threw her head back and laughed. It was nice. He could watch her laugh all day. “Oh, I don’t know,” she giggled. “I think you are.”

“Out of the two of us?”

“I win without question.” She laughed loudly when he seized her sides, squirming and giggling madly. He didn’t remember her being ticklish, so how did he know? “Stop stop, I can’t take it.”

“How can I stop when you’re laughing like that?”

“Like what?”

“Like you’re happy.” Her laughter quieted down and she stared at him with a soft flush on her face. “You look good like this.”

“Thanks.” She smiled and ran her fingers through her hair, letting it out of her bun. He was pretty content like this, letting her smile and hold onto his hand. She quieted down, staring up at the sky. She shifted, and curled in close, laying her head on his shoulder.

“Did we used to lie like this?”

“Yes,” she breathed. “It was nice.”

Law swallowed and tightened his grip on her hand. “It...could still be nice.”

“Oh?”

“If you want.”

Ruby turned her head and her nose brushed against his jaw. He looked at her face, at her amused expression. “Are you really saying that this is based on what I want?”

“Yeah? I don’t want you to do anything you don’t want. This situation is weird.”

“It is weird, but...well...I don’t want hesitation from you either. I need you to fully be behind this. I want you confident.”

He thought for a moment. She was right. If he had doubts or hang ups, it wouldn’t be fair to her. “You...have no problem starting over?”

“It won’t be easy,” she admitted. “But I like to think that we’re good together. I don’t want to give that up, and…” she trailed off.

Law watched her before taking a deep breath. “I want to kiss you.”

“Do you now?”

“Yes.”

“Then you should. You do remember how, don’t you? If not that’s okay, I can totally teach you how and-” she giggled when he cut her off. She had expected the kiss, he knew but he didn’t really care. He pulled away, and stared at her nervously. She snorted and kissed his bottom lip softly. “You’re cute.”

“Shut up,” he rolled her off the sun chair. She laughed cutely, showing that it didn’t bother her. He smiled, his heart feeling light and relief overcoming him. She stood up and patted her butt with a content smile on her face. Law sat up and opened his mouth and closed it. He wasn’t exactly sure what to say. He hadn’t thought about the next part. Ruby noticed his silence and grinned.

“Not sure what comes next?”

“Not exactly.”

Ruby sat on the sun chair. She leaned in and over him, kissing him softly. “That.”

“I can do that.” He reached for her face and pulled her lips to his. Her lips were sticky from her lip gloss. He liked kissing her, he realized. Not that he was surprised. She leaned on him, starting to take control of the kiss. And he couldn’t have that. Just because she knew how to kiss him didn’t mean he was going to let her be in control. He bit her bottom lip roughly, feeling her smirk.

“Well, good to see you two are back to normal.” Penguin said flatly.

Law sighed, annoyed at the interruption. Ruby pulled away and looked at Penguin. She snorted, biting her lip.

“Thanks. You busy?” Law looked at her confused before looking at Penguin. Law rolled his eyes at the sight of Penguin bringing someone onto the sub.

“Yup, night.” He walked off without waiting for a response, dragging his partner for the night behind him.

Ruby looked back at Law with a silly grin and he rolled his eyes. Ruby giggled and laid next to him again, with her head on his shoulder. “He did that on purpose,” Law grumbled.

“He absolutely did,” Ruby said in amusement. “It’s fine. It happens sometimes.”

Law grunted and Ruby chuckled. She kissed his cheek, and he didn’t want to admit it, but he did calm down. He was starting to understand why he spoiled her over the past year. He sighed and turned to look at her. She had a soft look in her eyes that something in the back of his mind missed. He leaned in and kissed her slowly, somehow knowing the exact way she wanted to be kissed. He’s not sure where this expertise and confidence came from, but he was glad for it.

Her tongue tasted like orange juice. Her hair was soft. Her body was firm. Her fingers were delicate but had purpose. She was amazing to kiss. He wondered if all their kisses had evoked such a reaction from him.

They pulled away and Ruby rubbed her nose against his. She had a soft smile on her face. A relieved smile. Law knew she had missed their relationship. She knew she had missed how close they had become. He wanted to live up to her expectations. He’s not sure he could, but he was willing to try.

As much as it sucked to lose a whole year with her, he was glad for the opportunity to try again. Still, he wished he could remember their actual first kiss. The first time he saw her naked. Their first argument and make up. Even though they started over, he still wanted to gain back what he had lost. He supposed he was hoping her kiss would be magic and it would cause his memories to come back.

“What’s wrong?”

“I think I haven’t accepted my memory loss as well as I had thought.”

Ruby opened her eyes and had a sad look in them. “I’m sorry,” she whispered and wrapped her arms around his neck. She laid her forehead on his. “I know this can’t be easy.”

He hugged her to him and closed his eyes. At least she could hold him now. “You’re soft.” He mumbled.

Ruby chuckled. “Thanks.” She rubbed her forehead against his. “There’s a chance we’ll run into the person who did this to you. I’ll kick their ass for you.”

He smirked. “Thanks for the thought.”

Ruby sighed. “Yeah.” She opened her eyes and looked into his. “We’ll figure it out.”

We, Law thought to himself. It was “we” now. Not “I” or “you;” “we.” He was definitely going to have to get used to that.

“Yeah.”

Car Insurance Claim Help? On the 4/7/2011 I was at a set of traffic lights that was (RED) of my way to the shops. As the lights went green I begin to move off slowly as I did another car came from the left of me and tried to turn right as he speed up he crashed into the drivers side of the car. He clearly jumped a red light (Clearly Seen on CCTV). I was in total shock at the time! After he crashed into my car he went to drive off by reversing, I jumped out of my car to stood in his was so he could not drive off the witness behind me called the police while I was stopping his from driving off he started to drive forwards trying to me me out the way. After the driver spoke to the police on the phone, he then gave me his Name, Phone number and Insurance information. The next day I called my insurance company they was vary helpful and I believe the clam would be settled in my favor as I had CCTV of the crash as I had a camera inside of my car and a witness that was behind my car at the time of the crash. After nearly 4Months I have now revived a letter stating that the claim has been closed on a Without Prejudice Basis. When I contacted Aviva to see what the 3rd party has not accepted full liability they said it was dealt with like this as the 3rd party who crashed into me was not responding to and calls or letters that have send him. Aviva did not asked to see the CCTV of the crash and did not take into account the witness statement. WHAT CAN I DOOO??""

Hello Thank you for entering in my post I've been with Admiral insurance for more than 1 year, which is my 1st car insurance since I've been in England I've been driving for more than 12 years and I've never made a claim before it was a normal and clear day and i was going to work when I had an accident with a girl riding a moped It was a very silly accident, fortunatelly none was injured, and I only had a broken wind-mirrow, which is no more than 50 of damage I had to call Admiral, my insurer, to sort the problem out, I had no other choice Admiral told me I was not covered to go to work since on the policy agreement says: use for social, domestic and pleasure purposes only. And, according to them, to be covered, my policy had to be: use for social and COMMUNITY. So Community for them means, going to work, it is ridiculas but that's what i was told However they said we cover you, you will have to pay 23.74 extra and you will be covered, it was frustrating, a theft, but I let it go... The absurd story didn't even start yet! I gave Admiral all the details which the police had given to me the day of the accident plus some pictures of the scene, which I took before to leave that day Admiral sent an inspector who interwied me at my house. This inspector wrote a statement of 6 PAGES! about my accident, however, I need to say, he did a very good job On the statement states that none was injured and the fault lies with the moped rider, which is also what the police said on the scene. In addtion this inspector suggested to call my insurer again to finally get my car fixed. So last week the side gate to my house was left open and my dog got out. She bit one of my neighbors down the street, I'm guessing out of fear (she is a rescue dog). We apologized and offered to pay any medical costs upfront, but my neighbor preferred to let our insurance companies handle the claim. Dan Ariely: Predictably Irrational

Chapter 1: The Truth About Relativity

We always seek to draw comparisons, and we are often unaware as to how seemingly irrelevant factors such as the simple presentation of options, actually influence what we select.

Thus, given three choices, A, B (very distinct, but equally as attractive as A), and A- (similar to A, but inferior), we will almost always choose A, because it is clearly superior to A-.

Thus, the simple addition of a third "A-" option, "Paris without a free breakfast", will cause us to choose "Paris with a free breakfast", the "A" option, over "Rome with a free breakfast", the equally attractive "B" option.

Similarly, had the third option added been "B minus" - "Rome without a free breakfast", we would have selected that "B" option - "Rome with a free breakfast".

When contemplating the purchase of a $25 pen, the majority of subjects would drive to another store 15 minutes away to save $7

When contemplating the purchase of a $455 suit, the majority of subjects would not drive to another store 15 minutes away to save $7

The amount saved and time involved are the same, but people make very different choices

Watch out for relative thinking; it comes naturally to all of us.

Chapter 2: The Fallacy of Supply and Demand

Anchoring has a major long-term effect on our willingness to pay.

For every product, those with a 80-99 SSN were willing to pay more than those with a 00-19 SSN...by nearly 3X.

Herding: Assuming that something is good (or bad) on the basis of other people's previous behavior

Example: People wanting to go to a restaurant where people are waiting outside

Example: Going back to Starbucks because you recall enjoying yourself on your previous visit

At that point, you no longer ask yourself if you'd be better off with the cheaper coffee at Dunkin Donuts, or with the free coffee at your office

Starbucks itself is a case of producing a new anchor. Schultz made Starbucks as different as possible from the traditional coffee shop to convince shoppers to establish a new anchor, rather than saying, "This is a fancy, expensive Dunkin Donuts."

Ariely then ran another experiment. He read from "Leaves of Grass," and then asked his students the following:

1/2 of the students were asked if they would be willing to pay Ariely $10 for a 10-minute poetry recitation

1/2 of the students were asked if they would be willing to listen to a 10-minute poetry recitation if Ariely paid them $10

The students who were asked if they were willing to pay offered $1 for a short reading, $2 for a medium reading, and $3 for a long reading.

The students who were asked if they'd accept pay demanded $1.30 for a short reading, $2.70 for a medium reading, and $4.80 for a long reading.

This is known as the "Tom Sawyer" effect. Quote Twain: "There are wealthy gentlemen in England who drive four-horse passenger coaches 20 or 30 miles in the summer because the privilege costs them considerable money, but if they were offered wages for the service, that would turn it into work, and then they would resign."

Knowing the impact of anchoring, you should train yourself to question your repeated behaviors. You should also pay particular attention to the first decision in a long stream of decisions. It may seem like it is just one decision, but that first decision may have impact on future decisions for years to come.

The bigger picture is that supply and demand are not independent; supply-side variables like MSRP can impact willingness to pay. Price "memory" can also have a major impact. Doubling the price of milk and halving the price of wine would have a major short-term impact, but it's unlikely to have a long-term impact on consumption patterns. And if you induced amnesia about the previous prices, it might have nearly no impact at all.

Chapter 3: The Cost of Zero Cost

Why we often pay too much when we pay nothing

Zero/free is a source of irrational excitement. This is called the "zero price effect."

When a truffle was $0.15 and a Kiss was $0.01, 73% of subjects chose the truffle and 27% the Kiss

When a truffle was $0.14 and a Kiss was free, 69% chose the kiss and 31% the truffle

According to standard economic theory, the price reduction shouldn't lead to any behavior change (relative price and expected pleasure should be equal between the two experiments)

Humans are loss-averse; when considering a normal purchase, loss-aversion comes into play

But when an item is free, there is no visible possibility of loss

He gave kids (and students) 3 Kisses and offered to trade 1 Kiss for a small Snickers, and 2 Kisses for a large Snickers.

The subjects overwhelmingly chose the large Snickers (which is rational, given the weights of the candies)

When he instead offered to trade 1 Kiss for a large Snickers, or let the person take a small Snickers for free, the subjects overwhelming went for the free offer.

The zero price effect applies even when money is not involved.

After Super Saver shipping was introduced, Amazon saw sales increases everywhere except for France

It turned out that the French division offered 1 franc ($0.20) pricing instead of free pricing.

When this was changed to free, France saw the same sales increases as elsewhere

Chapter 4: The Cost of Social Norms

Why we are happy to do things, but not when we are paid to do them.

Imagine the scene if, after Thanksgiving dinner at your mother-in-law's house, you pulled out your wallet and asked, "How much do I owe you?"

Social norms such as reciprocity are warm and fuzzy, with no explicit quid pro quo

Market norms are explicit and hard--you get what you pay for

Example: You can't mix social and market norms where sex is involved. You can't wine and dine a woman and then say, "You know, this relationship is costing me a lot of money." As Woody Allen said, "The most expensive sex is free sex."

Participants worked harder under non-monetary social norms than for payment!

Conclusion: Small gifts don't constitute a market norm, and keep things in the social realm

Thinking about money made people more self-reliant and less willing to ask for help.

On the other hand, they were less willing to help others.

More selfish and self-reliant

Wanted to spend more time alone

Were more likely to select individual tasks rather than those that required teamwork

Chose to sit farther away from others

Imposing a fine had long-term negative effects. Without a fine, parents felt guilty about being late (Ariely dryly notes, "In Israel, guilt seems to be an effective way to get compliance"). Imposing a fine inadvertently replaced social norms with market norms. Parents decided to since they were being fined, they could decide whether or not to be late, and frequently chose to be late.

A few weeks later, the day care center removed the fine, but the situation worsened. Rather than reverting to social norms, parents now concluded that there was no penalty for tardiness.

Conclusion? "When a social norm collides with a market norm, the social norm goes away for a long time. In other words, social relationships are not easy to reestablish. Once a social norm is trumped by a market norm, it will rarely return."

You can't treat your customers like family one moment and then treat them impersonally (or worse, as a nuisance or competitor) a moment later when this becomes more convenient or profitable. Ford had issues getting customers to come in for regular maintenance. Many of the parts needed servicing at different times, and the intervals differed by vehicle.

Then Ford noticed that Honda had lumped all service needs into one of three intervals: 6 months/5,000 miles, 1 year/10,000 miles, and 2 years/25,000 miles. It was suboptimal from an engineering standpoint, but it made it easy to tell customers when to come in.

Ford imitated Honda, and within 3 years, was achieving the same results.

Why not make comprehensive physicals simple? Then layer in a financial penalty for missing them.

Chapter 7: The High Price of Ownership

Why We Overvalue What We Have

The "endowment effect" means that when we own something, we begin to value it more than other people do.

Ariely and Carmon conducted an experiment on Duke students, who sleep out for weeks to get basketball tickets; even those who sleep out are still subjected to a lottery at the end. Some students get tickets, some don't.

The students who didn't get tickets told Ariely that they'd be willing to pay up to $170 for tickets.

The students who did get the tickets told Ariely that they wouldn't accept less than $2,400 for their tickets.

Remember, these students were indistinguishable until some won the lottery and some lost.

There are three fundamental quirks of human nature:

When thinking about selling something, you think about all the things you'll miss, rather than the hassles of ownership.

Peculiarities of ownership:

This is why trials and money-back guarantees work so well! People hate to downgrade.

To counteract the endowment effect, try to view all transactions as a non-owner. (Editor's note: This explains the efficacy of one of my favorite questions: "Assuming you hadn't done X, would you still do it now?")

Chapter 8: Keeping Doors Open

Why Options Distract Us from Our Main Objective

In 210 BC, Xiang Yu led an army against the Ch'in Dynasty. While his troops slept, he burned his ships and smashed all the cooking pots. He explained to his troops that they had to either fight their way to victory or die. His troops won 9 consecutive battles. Eliminating options improved the focus of his troops.

We feel compelled to preserve options, even at great expense, even when it doesn't make sense.

Ariely and Shin conducted an experiment on MIT students. They devised a computer game which offered players three doors: Red, Blue, and Green. You started with 100 clicks. You clicked to enter a room. Once in a room, each click netted you between 1-10 cents. You could also switch rooms (at the cost of a click). The rooms were programmed to provide different levels of rewards (there was variation within each room's payoffs, but it was pretty easy to tell which one provided the best payout).

Players jumped from door to door, trying to keep their options open.

They made 15% less money; in fact, by choosing any of the doors and sticking with it, they could have made more money.

"What we need to do is to consciously start closing some of our doors....We ought to shut them because they draw energy and commitment from the doors that should be left open--and because they drive us crazy."

When we focus on the similarities and minor differences between two things, we fail to take into account the consequences of not deciding. Flip a coin and move on.

Chapter 9: The Effect of Expectations

Why The Mind Gets What It Expects

Previously held expectations can cloud our point of view.

Ariely, Lee, and Frederick conducted yet another experiment on MIT students. They let students taste two different beers, and then choose to get a free pint of one of the brews. Brew A was Budweiser. Brew B was Budweiser, plus 2 drops of balsamic vinegar per ounce.

When students were not told about the nature of the beers, they overwhelmingly chose the balsamic beer.

When students were told about the true nature of the beers, they overwhelmingly chose the Budweiser.

If you tell people up front that something might be distasteful, the odds are good they'll end up agreeing with you--because of their expectations.

Ariely, Ofek, and Bertini then conducted another experiment, this time on Sloan students. They offered students a free cup of coffee and asked them to indicate how much they liked the coffee, and how much they'd be willing to pay for it. They also set out a table of condiments, some usual, some unusual (cloves, nutmeg, cardamom, etc.).

None of the students used the unusual condiments.

When the condiments served in fancy containers (versus white Styrofoam cups), the students were much more likely to say that they liked the coffee, and were willing to pay more for it. "When the coffee ambience looked upscale, the coffee tasted upscale as well."

When we believe something will be good, it generally will be good, and when we think it will be bad, it will be bad. But does finding out the truth after the experience change one's mind?

Ariely conducted the beer experiment again, but with a twist. The students would taste the beer first. Only then they would be told the truth. And after that, they would be asked their opinions.

If the knowledge merely informs us, whether you found out about the vinegar before or after the tasting should be irrelevant. On the other hand, if the knowledge actually reshapes sensory experiences, being told beforehand would have a radically different effect.

People who were told afterwards about the vinegar liked the beer just as much as those who weren't aware of the vinegar at all. In other words, knowledge affected the sensory experience.

And people followed through on their opinion; when participants were given the opportunity to add vinegar to a free beer afterwards, those who learned of the vinegar after their tasting were much more likely to add vinegar to their free beer.

How can you use this knowledge?

When a person drinks Coke or Pepsi, the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (VMPFC) was stimulated.

When a person knew they were about to get a drink of Coke, the dorsolateral aspect of the prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), an area involved in higher-order brain functions, was also activated.

The Coke brand was able enhance activity in the brain's pleasure center, actually changing the experience of drinking Coke.

Stereotypes

The second group did better on the math test than the first.

The polite word group waited 9.3 minutes before they interrupted.

The rude word group waited only 5.5 minutes before interrupting

Policy implications for conflicts between groups

"Blind" presentation of the facts (presenting the facts, but not revealing which party took which actions) might help people better recognize the truth.

We can try using a neutral third party to set down rules and regulations

Editor's Note: This ties in nicely with one of my favorite persuasive tactics--reframing a decision in different but logically equivalent terms. If a person is being irrational, I give them a what-if that recasts them or a group they identify with as the party being harmed...if they have a shred of self-awareness, this usually helps them understand how their prejudices are clouding their judgment.

Chapter 10: The Power of Price

Why a 50-Cent Aspirin Can Do What A Penny Aspirin Can't

The placebo effect is well-known and real. It's not just a matter of fooling oneself; placebos can actually trigger endorphins and opiates and other biological reactions that actually change body and experience. What is interesting, however, is that price has an impact on efficacy.

Ariely, Waber, Shiv, and Carmon made up a fake painkiller, Veladone-Rx. An attractive woman in a business suit (with a faint Russian accent) told subjects that 92% of patients receiving VR reported significant pain relief in 10 minutes, with relief lasting up to 8 hours.

The control group that didn't drink SoBe got 9/15 correct

The "expensive" group got 9/15 correct

The "discount" group got 6.5/15 correct

The "discount" group improved their score by 0.6

The "expensive" group improved their score by 3.3...in other words, they did better than the control group!

Chapter 11: The Context of Our Character, Part 1

Why We Are Dishonest, and What We Can Do About It

Ariely conducted an experiment on Harvard students. He gave students a 50-question, multiple-choice quiz. They would take the quiz, then transfer the answers to a Scantron sheet. The students received $0.10 for each correct answer. The results were as follows:

32.6/50

36.2/50 (cheating = 3.6 questions)

35.9/50

36.1/50

Given the opportunity, many honest people will cheat (similar experiments were conducted at MIT, Princeton, UCLA, and Yale with similar results, so it's not just that Harvard students are crooks).

Once tempted to cheat, students didn't seem to be influenced by the risk of getting caught; even when we have no chance of getting caught, we still don't become wildly dishonest.

"We care about honesty and want to be honest. The problem is that our internal honesty monitor is active only when we contemplate big transgressions, like grabbing an entire box of pens. For little transgressions like taking a single pen, we don't even consider how these actions would reflect on our honesty."

And most of the subjects couldn't even recall all of the commandments! Even those who could only remember 1 or 2 commandments were nearly as honest. "This indicated that it was not the Commandments themselves that encouraged honesty, but the mere contemplation of a moral benchmark of some kind."

Those who signed didn't cheat. Those who didn't see the statement showed 84% cheating.

"The effect of signing a statement about an honor code is particularly amazing because MIT doesn't even have an honor code."

Chapter 12: The Context of Our Character, Part 2

Why Dealing With Cash Makes Us More Honest

Ariely conducted an experiment on MIT's communal refrigerators.

When he slipped in a 6-pack of Coke, all the Cokes had vanished within 72 hours

When he left a plate containing 6 $1 bills, no one *ever* took any of the money

Would you feel bad about taking a pen for you child? How about taking $0.10 from petty cash to pay for a pen for your child? The two are economically identical, but get very different reactions.

"Cheating is a lot easier when it's a step removed from money."

Ariely returned to the honesty tests, but with a twist: Students told the proctor their score. The proctor gave them tokens. The students would then walk to another experimenter and trade the tokens for cash.

Of 2,000 participants, only 4 went for total cheating--claiming to have solved every problem

Switching from cash to an equivalent non-monetary currency doubled cheating!

Of the token group, 24/150 participants cheated all the way.

We have no idea how dishonest we are

Students predicted that they would be no more likely to cheat with tokens than cash...they were completely wrong.

People who have their assistants turn in their expense reports (rather than turning them in personally) are much more likely to cheat.

Businesspeople are more likely to claim dubious expenses when they are traveling across the country than when they are in their home city, or even just returning from the airport.

Overall, cheating is not limited by risk; it is limited by our ability to rationalize the cheating to ourselves.

Chapter 13: Beer and Free Lunches

What Is Behavioral Economics, and Where Are the Free Lunches?

Experiment 1: Beer ordering. A group of 4 is offered a choice of 4 different beers.

In Hong Kong, in a culture that values conformity rather than uniqueness, the similar but opposite effect occurred. People ordered the same order as the people ordering before them. They were still unhappy, but they made their choice to avoid uniqueness, rather than to seek it out.

"We are all far less rational in our decisionmaking than standard economic theory assumes. Our irrational behaviors are neither random nor senseless--they are systematic and predictable. So wouldn't economics make a lot more sense if it were based on how people actually behave? That simple idea is the basis of behavioral economics."

Getting employees to pre-commit to using raises to increase 401k contributions raised the savings rate from 3.5% to 13.5% over a few years.

How does it feel to do a Triathlon?

Well, it all started about six weeks ago when a friend of ours asked if I wanted to accompany her to an annual Cross Triathlon in Akersloot which is a village only a few kilometers away from where we live. Her husband does Triathlons but did not want to do this one because the cycling part was on a mountainbike instead of a Time Trials bike.

Obviously I said NO because I can bike pretty well but I had not run in years as I had switched to biking and the swimming, Yes, that is really something. I can walk on the bottom of the lake but swim? No way! I can’t swim! I have negative buoyancy and sink so it is not going happen sorry!

My wife did the only appropriate thing when a friend asks for a favour at your party and she said: “Yes, he’ll do it!”

At this point I’m really worried! It’s only a 1/8th triathlon so that is a 500m swim in open water, 15km Mountain bike and a 5,4km run. It’s basically a warm up for an Iron man which is way longer but like I said, the biking and running distances are so short I normally wouldn’t change into other clothes to do them but that 500m swimming, that’s freaky. Why would anyone want to do that?

The other problem is time, I bike as much as possible but now I had to learn to swim and start running again and I had 8 weeks to get up to speed. (I have three daughters and my wife and we both work shifts.) Not very much time as you don’t want to injure yourself by beginning a new sport and going all out too early to get better.

The priority was the swimming so we are lucky to have an outside 50m pool in our town and I (my wife) signed us up so I could swim whenever possible. I started my first 50m lap freestyle and I was completely out of breath. Did another 50m directly after that and had to do the third lap breast stroke. Damn, that 500m seems really far now!

Lucky for me there was a lifeguard watching me and shaking his head. He asked me how I was doing and I asked him: “Whatta you think?! I’m dying here!” The lifeguards at the pool decided to take me under their wings and started giving me lessons for free. Try this, try that, use this board, here are some flippers so you can concentrate on your arms. Try breathing every other set, breathe left and right, etc etc.

They really helped me and I went from 3:00 to 2:15 minutes per 100m in a few weeks and I was doing 2500m in one pool session. I’m rocking this now! 500m is way easy!

Cycling was still no problem, going to my work and back would be about 100km round trip and sometimes I would just extend either the route to work or back to total about 150km. I was doing that once a week and mountainbiking once or twice as well doing about six hours a week on the bike.

Running was the easiest to fit in because 5km you can do in half an hour. Pull on your shoes and go, back in 30 minutes. I do admit for serious times you have to run much more but I had to concentrate on the swimming part.

One of the best things I bought was a Garmin Fenix 3 watch which gives you loads of information and connects with all your bike sensors and has a special Triathlon mode. I also bought a Triathlon short which you can swim, bike and run in. It was from Castelli and performed perfect!

A few days before the race I went down to the lake and checked out the area and wanted to go for a swim but I swear, the wind was really blowing, there were big barges going up and down and there was no one around. Not the safest way to get acquainted with open water swimming where you really want someone watching out for you. I had to do this because I did not want to get into that water for the first time during the race but I don’t know what it was but I was really spooked. I had so much trouble getting in the water. After about 15min i just got in. I wouldn’t be able to take the crap from everyone about not having got in so I did. I swam about 60m and got out. The plants and boats just got to me and I went home feeling a little uneasy about the race on Sunday. In the end it was good I had done it but I should have swam more in that lake.

The last part of the prep was watching every Youtube movie I could find about Triathlons and open water swimming. That really helped me out! Swimming techniques, gear checklists, and how to do the transitions from swimming to biking to running. You want to be as efficient as possible because the transition times are added to your overal time!

Race day! I got there early. I figured I wanted time to get my gear set up properly, maybe jump in the lake to get used to the temperature of the water to prevent cold shock just before the start which causes shortness of breath. Something you don’t want before you start your 500m swim.

At 5 minutes to the start I got in the water. The weather was not very nice with a strong westerly wind causing quite some chop and the sun was nowhere to be seen. It was pretty cold and most people were wearing a wetsuit which I don’t (yet) have. I had only my shorts on, no shirt, nothing.

I decided as I was crap at swimming I would start a little in the rear as most people would be faster than me. Bad move! The gun fires and we’re off! I’m trying to freestyle my way forward but I’m surrounded by 120 others all heading to the same point. It’s kind of like a bar brawl in the water and everyone’s heading to the same point. Damn, I haven’t been hit in the face this much since high school! I was still enjoying it though and none of it was malicious in any way. It’s just what you get when your swimming in close proximity to another 100 people.

However hard I tried I couldn’t get into my rhythm. I was swallowing loads of lake water due to all the arms and legs around me and the chop. This is nothing like swimming in a pool! I could not see more than 10cm in front of me and overtime I went into freestyle I would catch up to the group just ahead but I could’t pass them so I settled into breast stroke. I must admit, it was more like survival out there but before I knew it we were rounding the buoys. In the end I just was carried along in the group around me and did the swim in 13 minutes which was not as good as I had hoped but it could have been much worse. I climbed out and was still alive so I ran as fast as I could to my bike.

There I put on my chest strap for heart rate, my shirt was a real pain as I was still wet and it didn’t want to slide down my body and it got rolled up just under my armpits! Go for the tri suit really, It will save you time! Glasses on, helmet on, wipe all the grass off your feet and put your feet, without socks, into your cycling shoes. Good idea to train cycling without socks before you do your triathlon to prevent blisters! Grab your bike and go!

Now I was in my element! Full speed pushing as hard as I could. My heart rate was way up at 170+ but I didn’t care because I was so glad I wasn’t swimming!

Two loops of 7,5km which made it easier to judge how hard I could push on the second loop as I knew what was coming. I was passing people left and right and was hitting 37km/hr+ on the straights on my mountainbike. I still had my Nobby Nic tires on and I wished I had put on my Racing Ralphs which have a lot less resistance but I did not have the time before the race to change them out. As I was coming into the second transition guys were already finishing their first or second running loop! Shit I’m slow!

At the second transition I left my bike, took off all the biking gear and grabbed my running shoes which I had set up with quick fasteners so I wouldn’t have to tie my laces, and bolted out of the parc fermé.

Actually I forgot to tighten my laces but it was only over 5km so I didn’t bother to stop and just continued. I did have some trouble getting into my running rhythm and felt really out of breath although I didn’t feel like I was running very fast. I had been pushing on the wrong button on my Fenix 3 Garmin watch so I was not getting any heart rate info and had no idea where I was on the scale.

I settled into the run and after about a kilometer and my breath had come back. Later I was talking to other participants and they had the same problem so maybe the transition from biking to running is the difficult one which you should obviously train before your actual Triathlon.

Three laps and 5,4km later my first Triathlon was over. This was so much fun! I have done loads of running races and cycling races but this was definitely the most fun. The swimming adds a complete different dimension and the transitions make it really exciting! You also get to train three sports instead of one! All I can say is that if you have ever thought of doing a Triathlon don’t wait. Do it!
