2023 - The year of Japanese BLs (My 2023 BL wrapped)

After plenty of good BL releases in 2022, I was hoping 2023 would keep the pace and give us even better content. However, I turned out to be very disappointed. In my opinion, the majority of the shows were blank, superficial and had really bad script and bad acting, so there were very few of them I've managed to finish, mostly Japanese ones.

One thing that really draws me towards Japanese productions is that the stories are believable and portrayed in a natural way. Even when the acting has big "anime" reactions, they usually fit in the context. Kieta Hatsukoi, for instance, explores this type of reactions very well and they don't feel cringe at all, unlike most Thai BLs and some Korean ones as well.

Nationalities apart, there's an obvious gold rush that is happening in the BL industry. A lot of companies realized that BL does make profit and are producing a lot of shows, poorly written, poorly casted, but that's ok since people are still consuming for the skinship, right? There's a public for that, so why invest in good, but a little more expensive stories?

Anyway, this is my opinion of course, as a regular consumer of the genre, and I can't help to be disappointed. But enough of the complaining, right? Let's go to the list of my 2023 favorites!

Top 3:

The eight sense

This BL has entered my list of all-time favorites. Fresh and mature, the chemistry between the leads is amazing. Jihyun's innocent approach to life contrasts really well with Jaewon's harsh perspective and I love the way both of them bond while helping each other to evolve. The feeling of the show reminds me a bit of Skam, another all-time favorite, and I found out that it really was one of the materials they used for inspiration. If you haven't watched it yet, stop everything you're doing and go watch The eighth sense right now.

2. If it's with you

I loved this show so much! The manga adaptation was beautifully done, they really paid attention to the details. It's a very sweet, heart-warming and honest story. There's no "instant love”: the relationship between them is built little by little, through sincere conversations and empathy. The series invites you to be more honest with yourself and to not be afraid of showing your true self. 

3. My Beautiful Man 2 and My Beautiful Man: Eternal

Well, it's somehow funny that I put this BL on the list, because I hated the first season of My Beautiful Man. However, the second season and the movie explore the motives behind the characters' actions in a deeper way, so the viewer can better understand the relationship dynamic. One thing that I really like about this story is that, although there is a worship behavior from Hira towards Kiyoi, Hira's life is not all about Kiyoi. In the same way, despite the fact that Kiyoi enjoys to be worshiped, he's also unsure about Hira's feelings: does Hira love the perfect, godlike image of Kiyoi he created inside his head or does he love the true Kiyoi, the human being with flaws?

A great slow-burn which approaches the fact that true family is the one you choose, so sweet that almost made me die of too much cuteness.

I Can't Reach You

A very sweet friends-to-lovers story, which is now on Netflix!

Love Tractor

A fresh and funny countryside love story. I just love how Yechan is so hyped when it comes to Seonyul. This man must be kept in a jar, protected from all the badness in the world.

Conclusion

Well, although I believe 2023 wasn't the best year for BLs, it did give us some true gems, more productions and more visibility. I've seen news about Kdrama actors working on BL projects that will be released in 2024, so I guess we're having some next-level good content this year.

Actually yes we do! We currently have over 200 asks in our inbox - We are trying to answer as many as we can, though sometimes we just don't have the time or the energy for them so we are deeply sorry if we haven't answered some requests from you or other people just yet - it's usually not a "I don't like your vibes so I won't answer this" at all that really only happens with disrespectful asks. all of these I would LOVE to hear your analysis on and most of them offer the MOST brain rot potential, however if I have to choose one to shove at you it is alice in borderland because I just finished the second season (8 eps per season) and like the THEMES are there and you won't get it till you watch it but I WANT TO SCREAM TO YOU ABOUT IT ITS SO GOOD!!!!

So idk if me coming here and suggesting it will do anything, but please please please watch alice in borderland it is soooo worth it one of the best asian dramas I have EVER seen I cannot speak about it enough THE ENDING!!!! (It is pretty violent/gory just fyi)

I am almost finished with Doom!!! It really was fun, I honestly doubt I'll be disappointed if the quality is the same as the rest of it. I am technically also still watching Goblin but I got distracted watching Arcane (which I ADORE) and then also the 2007 War and Peace miniseries and now I'm home with my family so I have less time etc etc so I may not get back to Goblin for a while, but it's SO GOOD I'm definitely going to finish it at some point I promise you.

I'm very glad my analysis is fun to read, even when a lot of it is just me going AAAHHHHHHHH a lot about things 😂😂, and I am ALWAYS looking for recs even if it'll take me years to get to them. All of those sound very interesting, I was already looking at Vincenzo and hometown cha cha cha but I haven't looked at the others! I love a bit of brain rot, and I do need a bit of brain rot in my life at all times, keeps me unstable enough to be funny, so I'll definitely think about looking at Alice in Borderland next!!! And I'm fine with gore so it sounds perfect!

I'm afraid I don't have many TV recs right now for you because you've watched The Bear, although if you haven't seen Arcane I would absolutely recommend it (ignore the fact it's based on League of Legends I do not see it I am looking away). OH and also I want to read the locked tomb series but I haven't yet, so take this with a pinch of salt but I DID read the first two chapters on Tor and it's so funny and the writing style is so good, so idk I'll let you know but it's shaping up to be good.

weak hero class 1 (kinda dark, high school setting, the best most jaw dropping acting from park jihoon, you'll be hooked every single second of every single ep it's impossible to not love this show)

move to heaven (ONLY IF YOU WANT TO FUCKING CRY but def one of my favourite shows ever its beautiful in such an indescribable way)

extraordinary attorney woo (if you want the most green flag kdrama in all of existence that is both super interesting and the romance is super cute you will come out of it ready to fight to the death for like at least 3 characters)

alchemy of souls (super long but the best kdrama in the entire world it has everything you could ever want i cannot say enough good things abt it but to put it into perspective i showed it into my mom and its her favourite show of all time she keeps talking about it to every single one of my family members and her friends like the aos agenda is REAL)

Hi!! :-) Sorry I took a while to get back on this, I really appreciated the message and am really glad you like the IF!

Let me give the recs a shot. It's a p small list and I've included some established/finished games as well, hope that's OK. (And yeah, I haven't come across a whole lot of 'ordinary'-setting IFs, but I tried my best!)

Disclaimer: I'm still relatively new to the whole IF scene - been playing COG/HG for 2-3 years or so, but never realised there was a whole flourishing community of people making their own games until recently! (one of my fave discoveries of 2021)

WIPS:

1. Citadel | @bouncyballcitadel I can't rec this enough! I really think it's one of the best "realistic"/ordinary-setting games out there. Everything about it is so well-done, it feels real. But like, real in a fun, living vicariously through my MC way. My mom's obsessed with kdramas, so I thought I'd reached the threshold for medical-dramas, but I was WRONG.)

2. Adventures of Sherlock Holmes - An affair of the heart |@doriana-gray-games The writing/dialogue/characters etc. are so good - really transports you to Victorian London and sucks you in (I love snarky british ppl and truly enjoy Lestrade so far). Also, the mystery is actually so legit?! Or maybe I'm a little air-brained. haha. Also. There are actual pictures between the pages. Production quality A+.

3. A Long Weekend This is a little different from the games I usually enjoy - I generally get sucked into character-rich, world-rich games with lush writing, but this one is compact and packs a punch & is worth a try (look out for the trigger warnings though!)

Other considerations: Ear Candy | @earcandy-if (this one has no demo yet but it’s on my to-play list for sure. Other than sports IFs, musician-IFs have been top on my IF-wishlist for ages.)

Relics of the Lost Age series You play as an archaeologist (for all your Indiana Jones fantasies)! Not exactly ordinary, but... set in the real-world (ish) I suppose? I've only played the first game but there's a demo out for the third game now, and the second game just came out.

Finished games that I really enjoyed:

1. Slammed! I know nothing about wrestling, but this was everything I need/expect from a realistic / ordinary-IF. Good writing. Good plot. Many branches. 'Nuff said?

2. The Parenting Simulator I was a lil shook by how much I enjoyed being a parent, I really don't think I'd feel the same with a real baby in my arms.

3. Choice of Broadsides (the OG game that got me into choicescript games).

10 Life-Changing Questions

1. How will your life be different in a year?

My life will be surely richer and wiser than ever, next year I would probably look fitter and healthier after the pandemic really ends. My savings will be overloaded and I'd start to contemplate about buying a kavling or a home in Bali, whether in Ubud or Denpasar. I would also have spared some money for my future kid and be planning about having a baby. Shortly, my life would taste finer, sweeter and wealthier. :)

2. What are you grateful for?

Of course for the life given to me itself, for the chances to be a better, wiser person everyday and an experience to grow up more mature and be the best version of me everyday. For a husband that will always stay by my side through tough times, who will do anything to make me happy and comfortable, and who follows whatever I plan or aim to do on the next day, and the next after, and the months ahead. The families that are so lovely and caring, the full-time job that offers great benefits of insurance, and the capabilities to make myself happy and less bored. The friends that spark different motivations and knowledge and love languages, the health that I can gain back after getting sick and being hospitalized for days. The chance to start my candle business, and my podcast project! <3

3. What nice thing can you do for someone else today?

To have meaningful conversations during the day, helping them in the kitchen or problem they're facing, buying some needed stuffs for better comfort living and making handcraft together with pio~

4. How much do you worry about what others think?

Never think too much about others opinions about myself. They can think good about me, think bad about me, and everything in-between. It's their thoughts after all, never will be mine except they have special space in my life.

5. What are you doing to invest in your relationships?

Nothing much lately, just trying to listen to whatever my partner share or complain. Buying foods or stuffs that he needs or craves, and taking care the home goodly so it will make him feel comfortable while working at home. What else should I do, yah?

6. What do you do for fun?

Mostly watching kdrama, then cooking dishes that inspire me from youtube, painting, playing games on my mobile phone since it's the easiest thing to do to kill boredom, lighting up my candle while putting face mask for 30-60 minutes and listening to relaxing musics. Going to the salon to have some beauty treatments and having some massages too can be a fun, lovely things to do!

So much!

8. Is anxiety something that dampens most of your days?

Nope, a lot of times it will be plans or things I should do or should finish or haven't done or haven't finished. Then checking on people I love about their conditions, are they healthy? have them eaten yet? If I ever get anxious, it will be because my money on my account is running low while I'm having this great deal of willing to buy random stuffs on e-commerce.

9. What have been your biggest mistakes?

Believing on something or someone who didn't deserve my loyalty and sincere love. Buying or spending money too much in a day for the shake of my uncontrollable sense of self-pampering / self-rewards.

10. What will people say about you at your funeral?

Rest in peace (?), like the most common thing people would say when somebody dies? Or, " I hope you can live the most rewarded and self-pampered life above there. Better than on the earth when you were still alive down here."

Andy I had presentation today and I guess it went fine, tbh it's more of type of class you present and every student will receive same easy great grade and that's nice, still stressful af giving oral presentation with a friend in front of people... I pulled all-nighter and I'm sleepy too ;-; And I got dragged into korean dramas recently, watched Beyond Evil (highly recommend) and I'm halfway through The Devil Judge (also recommend so far), well at least I can't say my procrastination sources are monotone, always something new. I feel like my recs jump all over the place and I send a lot, so don't feel pressured to keep on top of them! I hope you'll just end up with a list of things you'll get around to when you want and hopefully enjoy them! AGNES POP OFF!!! Ate the presentation up fr as usual. Presenting to the class is absolutely terrifying, I don't know if I find it worse presenting to people you know or those you don't 😵 It's been a while since I've had a group presentation to do but I hope considering it was with your friend it took some of the stress off your shoulders! I have yet to watch those kdramas so I'll add them to the list of recs let's gooo! I just googled them and they both look real good, it's very much the genre that I enjoy watching from kdramas. I think I'll end up choosing The Devil Judge first because I love the sound of it ngl, I hope the endings of both are satisfactory. I find the most in kdramas that the plot is literally god sent but the ending is so rushed or unfitting? At least in a lot of my experiences anyway. I admire the fact you can watch two at once that's beyond my level yet I'm afraid. The most I can do is watch two anime at the same time but like even that's pushing things gn. I think my favorite kdrama I've seen so far would have to be Vincenzo but that is quite the popular opinion. Another few that got me for a while were Extracurricular and Sky Castle, I don't remember the details much but I feel like Sky Caste did lose me somewhere along the line so maybe not the best rec. I've not seen too many other bangers recently but on my list is Crash landing on you. I'm not crazy for the romance genre more into the action / mystery (Alice in borderland actually is a popular Jdrama that's decent enough but nothing too special, still decent watch if you haven't seen!) but something about this one is pulling me in 😭 I'll update you on it but let me know if you've seen/watched it! I also watched Hotel del Luna not too long ago and I enjoyed it a fair bit although it did get heavy on the flashbacks (of scenes we had seen not like new info) in the latter half of the show which got sickening. Although kdramas and kmedia alike do love a good replay. I sometimes watch random singing shows, weekly idol, and I used to watch that one advice show that had like 400 eps?? But with them you get everyone and their distant relatives reaction to literally anything it's so annoying 😭 A staffs water bottle could fall over and the cameraman will pan to row 237 to get their expressions.

I started Hannibal 😳 I was notttt expecting this from it, I knew very little apart from a man ate people's organs but holy fuck. When we first meet Mr Hannibal himself, it's a very brief look at his face but his expression very much looked like a threat, it was not something I've seen done so well in a show for a while and I don't even know if it was the sunlight on the train shading his face or what but it hooked me 😭 Ok I have my raw thoughts wrote out after every ep (mostly) and the main points I've got so far I'll summarize them. Edit: I started writing this before finishing s1 which I now have, but I'll update my points with my current thoughts! Also this is my apology in advance for inevitably misinterpreting the scenes bye. Ok firstly, fucking a big one for me was Abigail's friend whose name escapes me being murdered and left in the hunting house- where he knew they were going to holy shitttt my jaw dropped. But very important it seems that truly there's only a handful of potential killers, those that were witness to her coming over and visiting Abigail the day prior. Obviously it's easier to say this when we know who did it but truly in my opinion it could've only been between the brother of the initial copycats victim, Abigail, Will, or Hannibal. (Edit: Fast forward to the end of season 1, yeah I think this point was realized 😭😭 and captilized on. I believed it could be wrote off as the brother of the victim killing these people however, once Will started piecing together the copycat killer to the other victims it was very fucking clear it was either him or Hannibal to the entirity of the staff. The one fatal flaw or perhaps intentional moment was Hannibal placing the blame of those initial murders on Will. Although I believe it to potentially be intentional as he seems to want Will to know what he did. I initially believed the end of s1 with Will being accused as the backup plan or a Get out of jail free card for Hannibal to utilise if necessary. However, the breadcrumb trail in the direction of Will inevitably being arrested and his house being searched was too prominent, the hiding of the true MRI results, the keys and gun left on the table after planting the worry of the female FBI staff psychiatrist (Anabelle? Begins with A?) being murdered. The fact we saw Hannibal alter the lures oh so early in the season showcases just how long he has this plan in motion, the extent of his thought process, and the fact it was in fact the original plan, this was how he wanted it to go).

I'm almost done with s1 (so true) and I'm at the part where Hannibal says he's considering a friendship with Will and later that episode is like hey, you should really go to that music shop. My (initial) interpretation was this man wasn't liking the idea of someone (Will) becoming close to him and allowing him to peer through his many many walls as his psychiatrist said. Yet, his expression when he heard Dominic(?) Say he killed 2 people and then the either surprise of Will surpassing expectations or the relief of seeing Will alive (mix of both?) flashed on his face when Will walked through the door hello. (Edit: Literally wrong as hell ok my new interpretation was he was establishing a reliable source in his psychiatrist by furthering her belief that he wants to help Will, so when questioned by authority she would only sing the song he wants, that's why he said he was "considering a friendship". Although maybe that is true it had a much bigger underlying reason for being said that went over my head initially 😭 Also I definitely think he was relieved to see him alive although now it seems that it was for a continuation of the plan he had in motion). Also not to mention the hints Hannibals low-key dropping?? The stag statue, was that always there?? The they're harvesting the organs comment which steered Will more into focusing on that aspect. He has Will tethering on the edge of discovering the truth. Perhaps the adrenaline of having someone with the potential to uncover the depth of your actions is an addictive one. (Edit: I could be wrong as hell with literally everything I've just said gn but this is what I'm thinking at least in conclusion to s1. I will hold off updating you any further until I complete s2 and then again big finale S3, I could be missing absolute key info tbh that would further explain pieces here but I'm really enjoying it so far! I thought I'd give you the little update while everything's more or less fresh in my head ^^).

Sasaki and Miyano, I know you said you didn't finish it all those weeks ago (although you easily could've now) and honestly I'm only going on to EP 5 but it is simply very sweet 😭 I don't think I can choose my favorite character although as of rn is between the two of them, its interchangeable between eps. My one critique has nothing to do with the plot but the shapes that we see on screen every minute bye it was kind of sickening at first but now I've got used to it. I haven't actually gone back to it in about a week but I must make time for it again it was just a heartwarming show. I love how fast the progression of time is in it, like we're not stuck in a year at school we are speedrunning the experience and honing in on important / telling moments of their interactions and feelings. Very cool, thank you for the rec because honestly I would've never found this! I was initially going to watch uhh is it Hanado-kun? but the anime it's the prequel of! I read the synopsis last weekend and it sounded like a lovely watch however, I did feel like my vibe was too stressed out to enjoy it. It was like settling down to watch a Ghibli movie I need my mindset to match. I say this, watch me go in to watch it and it'll somehow be a murder mystery. Besides the point, I am looking forward to seeing it! I enjoy a good 12 ep anime tbh especially after not committing to one for a while. I remember the last 12 ep one I watched must've been Sk8 the infinity? I enjoyed it a lot (very casual watch although it got me binge watching it over like two days), it actually persuaded me to buy a skateboard 😭 I did the same thing with Haikyuu and bought a volleyball, God I'm easily influenced. Actually on the topic (kind of) I bought a bike recently! I hadn't ridden a bike since I was like 11 and decided to take my bike down a massive field (top 10 best decisions) however comma my tire did pop on a rock in the ground (no one saw this fate coming) and I hadn't been able to get it fixed since 😵

As well on the side I saw George went live on his alt there for like 4 hours amen good food George I haven't seen it yet but I probably will have it on at some point. Let me know if you've seen or if it's good! I also saw Karl, Foolish, Quackity, Punz, and Sapnap meet up but like in passing photos and screenshots I didn't actually watch anything. I did a screenshot of mid stream Karl and Foolish risking it all live for one another, good for them good for them. Also the MCC team reveals, I don't know what I was expecting but it wasn't this team. I can't even guess how the dynamic will play out but I will witness it all the same. On the side, sorry there's like a George update section of my mind lighting up rn, but Wilbur and George seem to be in an upcoming MrBeast vid? Me when more content 😍 yet, the content of them will probably span 3 minutes out of 10 but I don't think I can be picky. I'm actually excited for Techno and George on the same team too, I remember last year they were seen playing bedwars together for a little while but I don't think anything content related came out of it. I think they'd work well on screen tbh although I don't know if this is a genuine assessment of their dynamic or just me wanting it to be true. Yet, as you said before George just has a tendency to get on well with people.

I am absolutely loaded with recs which I'm very thankful for as everything I have seen so far has been so fucking good amen. My week was quite busy surprisingly at work so I'm very relieved to see the weekend again, I hope your week wasn't too stressful! I know your exam season is looming over right now but you've got it in the bag, easy peasy, literally no bother for you. I hope you still get the time each day to relax and unwind for a while! May of 2022.

Hi everyone! Gosh! The last time I posted here was October of 2021, 7 months ago. I wasn't able to keep on writing here because I'm worried of my phone's storage so I had to uninstall this app. But worry no more because I uninstalled my TikTok, Twitter and Facebook today. Yay!

I just got the chance to write again here now because my calculus midterm exam is already done. I wanted to celebrate but I wasn't confident of my answers so maybe I'll just celebrate after the releasing of our grades? That'll take months tho 😭

To keep up with my life updates after October 2021, let's wrap up a bit.

November 2021- my 18th birthday. No celebration at all because I wasn't used to celebrating my birthday. I couldn't even remember what happened that day lol. Maybe I was busy thanking the people who greeted me. Overall, it wasn't really memorable at all.

December 2021- before Christmas Eve, Christmas and New Year's Eve, shit happened because of super typhoon Odette. Pros of that typhoon is we can finally renovate the house (tho it's been 5 months they haven't even started yet grrr), I had a good sleep because there was no signal so after we eat I'd watch kdrama for awhile (downloaded from Netflix) then I'll sleep, I spent time mostly with my family. Cons: No freaking signal. I had to go to Colon so I could catch up with my blockmates and friends. No electricity for almost a month so I had to use flashlight or a candle to make my goddamn plates. Shortage of water and food, we had to wait for how many hours to buy something. It wasn't a good time to celebrate Christmas and New Year.

January 2022- post Odette sufferings. Doing schoolworks while breaking down, couldn't understand anything because I was too busy thinking on how to fix our house, some of our teachers gave heavy tasks and I didn't care about my grades anymore as long as I could pass the courses.

February 2022- We went to Simala and Alcoy. I had the best time of my life since it's our semestral break.

March 2022- Celebrated mom's birthday. Still no classes so I accepted our family friend's offer to be her children's nanny for 4 days. I remember crying because I miss mama and I'm worried bc she's alone. While we're having video call, I had to turn off the camera because I'm crying for no reason. It was an epic 4 days because I had to clean not entirely 24/7 but I'm making sure that the house is clean and we're safe. I woke up early to cook, and after they eat washed the dishes, I cleaned their mess, assist them while taking a bath, literally all the chores a mother do. It was nice bonding with the kids, however, I realized that I wasn't really meant to be a mom (yet). Because of that experience, I realized that I will never be ready to become a mom.

April of 2022- official start of our class. First time I attended our virtual class inside a mall because I went to Talamban to witness my friend's performance. I will never do that again 💀 April 5, I went to see my friends because it's been a year or more since we last saw each other. Sunday of the following week, we agreed to go to Sto. Niño together with their partners and we went to SM Cebu to eat. You know what sucks? I'm the only one who's single. Yes. I pity myself for that 😭 but nah, I'd prefer to be their photographer than having a boyfriend. April 23, we met again to claim our medals at CIT and then we went to SM seaside to eat. We catched up and everything.

Now, I'm busy laying on my bed with so many pending tasks to do. I just finished our exams so I guess I deserve this? Actually, my April and May is busy as hell because our teachers are giving us too many tasks, plus I accepted personal tutor from our neighbor and answering their children's modules, plus my axie, plus the chores I do inside our house. There were times when I forget about eating, or even sleeping. I guess my body has more caffeine than water by now.

And oh, before I forget, I attended VP Leni's rally last April 21 at Mandaue City 😭 HOW CAN I ALMOST FORGOT THAT SPECIAL DAY OF MINE!? Well, yes, I attended her rally, become politically active, and this is my first time voting since I'm now 18. Sadly, she lost to the frontrunner of this election. It wasn't easy to grief while cramming my schoolworks but I moved on already and decided to help her NGO, angat buhay lahat. Also, because of her, I became close to some of my blockmates because we created a group chat. We became instant buddies because we share the same thoughts. They were nice, I just couldn't believe I made some friends because the actual goal is to stay low-key. Well 🤷

My realization for this blog, as I go back to where did I stop, I realized that I've been through so much. There were succeeding nights that I am crying out of frustration, anger, fear about my future, sadness, yet here I am, standing still. Whatever troubles I encountered for the past months, I thank God for giving me the strength to carry it all. I thank my family for stretching their patients for me. I thank my friends for listening to my nonsense blabbers, for listening to my vms (shouting, singing, crying etc.)and lastly, I thank myself for being strong and unwavering. I constantly remind myself that it's okay to pause, it's okay to cry, it's okay to feel the pain until it's gone and after that, we'll start fighting again.
