Kakashi Shipping Musings
Tbh I'm pretty neutral/more of a multi-shipper about Kakashi's ships nowadays, but I do think it's interesting to see how many of the ships have the potential to provide different things for Kakashi.
"Jezz, what the hell are you talking about this time?"
Bear with me here, but well, Kakashi has more ships than I can count at this point, SO! Just to mention some examples:
First up we have Gai, who is Kakashi's constant. Kakashi's other side of the coin who never gave up on him. They've known each other since childhood, with all that entails, and I'd argue that Gai is likely the person who (in canon) knows Kakashi the best out of everyone - including past Obito and Rin. Gai has seen and BEEN with Kakashi at his absolute worst, but also seen and been there as Kakashi slowly worked through it all and came out alive on the other side. Gai might call Kakashi his rival, but it's obvious they're best friends, and they completely trusts each other to 120%.
Secondly we have Iruka, who I'd argue is perfect as Kakashi's grounding. The one who takes Kakashi down a peg or two when needed. Iruka has both called Kakashi out on his bullshit in the past and continues to do so as well, but it's still obvious they respect each other a great deal. Naruto is obviously something that connects them, but from the little I've watched the Boruto series it's obvious Kakashi and Iruka are also portrayed them as friends on their own.
(Which is honestly a great foundation of any relationship - start as friends before you see if you also want something else out of it. After all, why choose between getting a friend or a partner when you can get both in the same person?).
My last example is Kurenai. There's something bittersweet there, but I do think she and Kakashi could make a great couple. Something sweet, and in a sense a... calm lull of love? Especially compared to the other ones he's shipped with. Anyway, Kurenai lost her partner and father of their child when Asuma died, and Kakashi lost one of his good friends. But they made it through. They still live. Kurenai also has a bunch of moments where she shows pretty good insight into Kakashi's thoughts, and there's a lot of understanding between the two of them. I guess my bottom-line is that I see some great potential in a relationship between Kakashi and Kurenai. Additional bonus is that the thought of Kakashi accidentally becoming the bonus dad/older uncle-figure to Mirai is kind of funny, because he probably thought he was done with raising children in any capacity after the mess that was Team 7 (which honestly wasn't his fault). Like sure, Kakashi will do it and he loves the child (Mirai), but he sure as heck didn't plan for this. x'D

There's obviously a lot of ships out there for Kakashi (such as with Yamato, Rin and Obito just to mention another 3), but my point is that different ships with Kakashi provides very different vibes of what they'd do and provide for Kakashi. None of them are wrong or better than the other(s), but I find them interesting to keep in mind.
Though Idk. Maybe my 4am musings won't make sense to anyone else. x)

Updates concerning my works-in-progress in the Supergirl/SuperCorp fandom!
I definitively fell into the SuperCorp rabbit hole and I'm over my head and my muse has decided that I needed to work on EIGHT (8) projects at the same time, 4 fanfictions and 4 fancomics.
In this there's one fic and two comics in what I dubbed the "superwitch presents 'verse" :
the main story is about time travel and witch!Lena and huge fix-its bc really this show needs them. (I've plotted the main story and wrote some of the important scenes, but I need to rewatch the show for details);
then there's the "challenge accepted" comic (yes the one I shared a sneak peek the other day, that one) which is halfway done but I don't know when I'll post it bc it feels weird without context (the context being the time travel fic);
and there's also the second comic that is clearly NSFW. What am I getting into?
Second fic? A little something taking place in a canon-divergent season two, that has been inspired by an episode of Farscape (the one where Chrighton is the only genetically viable suitor to a sebacean princess?) It's probably halfway done, I guess?
Third fic? Alien!Lena, yeaaah! I'm a sucker for this trope. But I wanted to make it a little bit different. This one is kind of an author's favorite and I've been thinking about it for a year but I only started writing less than a month ago. I can't wait to finish it and share it!
Fourth fic! It's like, totally random. It started as a writing exercise with a random prompt I found here and that made me laugh. It helped me overcome my writing block, so I guess whether I finish it one day or not it accomplished its purpose but what I wrote is kinda funny so I'd like to post it one day. (And there's my "favorite" douchecanoe in it, yes, that douche ceo from season one, you know the one)
So it's about third comic now, I think? This one was supposed to be for pride month but well... The calendar and I never agree on anything. But yeah, trans!Kara is coming your way (sooner or later)
Fourth and last comic: something cute and funny involving a kitten. Because who doesn't like kittens? (Lena, apparently. Just kidding)
There'll probably be more project sprouting in my brain but I really need to focus on the main ones first. I promise I'm working on this as fast as I can, with every spoons I have (yes I'm a spoonie)
SuperCorp and creating works about SuperCorp make me so happy lately and I really hope I can make other people happy with that too, but I can't post an unfinished work. So well, you'll have to wait.
(And now that all is said I'm going to bed bc it's like 4:40am here... Bye)

Random Musings and Observations from Morgoth’s Ring, Part One (Tulkas)
To make this easier for myself I’m going through the lenses of various characters to make observations and notes before writing more thought out responses.
First a bonus comment about the BoLT: I just think the scene where Melkor is on trial and Tulkas interrupts to be like “wait wait I have a better idea, we should unchain him and I’ll just fight him right now and we’ll be done with this high debate!” and Manwë essentially just tells him to calm down Like imagine you’re watching a trial and a member of the jury just gets up and says he’ll fight the defendant in the back alley and the judge is just like chill out I literally cannot stop thinking about this scene it’s so funny (though Kudos to Tulkas for wanting to unchain Melkor, he’s at least a good sport and this highlights an important difference between the two because this is of course right after Tulkas has just been chained before Melkor for nefarious reasons) 
(page 69) Tolkien changes (describing Vána and Nessa respectively) “the wife of Oromë” and “the wife of Tulkas” to “the spouse of Oromë” and “the spouse of Tulkas” 
This isn’t the only change to neutral language. Morgoth’s Ring states “and Tulkas was as a man caught in a black net at night” but the finalized Silmarillion reads “and Tulkas was as one caught in a black net at night” (and there are others too)
Speaking of Tulkas, apparently he “had great love” for Eönwë, (p146). The best I can figure this is the only mention of this relationship throughout the Legendarium.  They seem to have very different personalities and I would love to see anyone’s take on their friendship. 
Apparently Tulkas helped make the chain Angainu (Angainor in BoLT) along with Aulë. 
Christopher Tolkien seemed to think that his father was originally considering Tulkas as a Vala of the sun before deciding it was Arien who would take 
brief mention of an instance of assault as mentioned in Morgoth’s Ring 
given the violent lust Morgoth has for Arien in Morgoth’s Ring and the violent lust Tulkas nearly faces in BoLT when he is bound for Melkor’s “power and pleasure”, this is...interesting to me  
And Arien even had a masculine name, Auron.
Melko desired the flame that Tulkas as the sun god wielded against him.
It’s a fascinating bit of lore with frankly disturbing implications.
I’ve never been particularly fond of that aspect of Arien’s story; Tolkien is generally pretty good about not requiring female characters to suffer sexual assault as parts of their arcs and at times specifically makes the choice to not have that happen where many other authors would have.
I do find a personal catharsis in Arien’s revenge on Melkor just because the ability to hurt those who have harmed me in such a lasting, poetic, fundamental way is a tempting sort of wish fulfillment fantasy. But that’s a purely personal aside and not really relevant to my thoughts on its place in the legendarium.
Also why are two of the only assault victims in canon names with the exact same letters in them???

Hypothetically Rewriting Assault’s Story + Some General Assault Opinions

There’s a game my husband and I like to play when we watch a movie, play a game, or read a book that has a story that we don’t really enjoy or we enjoy certain parts of but not others.  We look at things we’d keep and things we’d change and we build a story from there-- sort of like an AU but we don’t really go into the writing part, we just stick to theorizing and mapping a general story.
I decided to play that game with Star Fox.  Not because I think Star Fox has a bad story but because sometimes I think the stories could have been handled better.  Note: for the rewrite game, I only really look at story, even for video games, I don’t really look at gameplay mechanics, but I do understand those have a lot to do with story potential so I do take it in as a factor... I just don’t bother to “rewrite” the mechanics, if that makes any sense at all.  Some of my list today will include boss encounters but I wouldn’t necessarily say those are mechanic-related... more like “event-related”.
I’ve mused a bit in the past about rewriting Adventures and Command and I do have plans to do a mock up of an Adventures remake eventually.  However, today I was thinking about how I would go about handling an Assault re-write in particular.  Much like Command and Adventures, I don’t have any beef with the core story but I do think there’s a few things that could’ve been better about Assault’s storyline-- like they had good ideas rolling but they didn’t quite refine them.

My basic feelings on Assault are pretty positive.  I think the game is generally just fun and I like that it feels like the natural progression from SF64.  I liked getting to see planets we haven’t seen since the N64 era in better graphics and I liked seeing Star Wolf return.  I also just thought the aparoids were neat enemies. 
Generally speaking, though, when it comes to Assault, I think it suffers from the thing it tries to push the most-- the story.  I think a lot of people get caught up in thinking the story is better than it is because it’s the first game since SF64 that really follows the same Star Fox vibe without retelling the Lylat Wars.  Don’t get me wrong, the overall plot is great but the execution and pacing are... wonky.  Certain characterizations also take a hit in some regards but no one really talks about that when Command exists. That’s something we’ll talk about later on with this post.
That being said, Assault really does have a lot good going for it.  An absolute banger of a soundtrack, some great dialogue, a neat story synopsis, the introduction of cool characters like Panther and Beltino (who existed but was always off-screen), and just good levels.

So, here’s what I would add, I suppose, if I were to somehow have the ability to rewrite Assault.  Originally I had this in paragraph form, but I’ve made it into more of a list under topic segments with main points bolded for your viewing pleasure.  Some of these points might be considered nitpicky and while I do understand that yes, this is a game about space animals, I do hold the developers in high enough regard to make a game with a continuity that makes sense.
The Story Changes
- Reduce Pigma’s storyline in Assault.  This is the biggest one for me because a bulk of the plotline feels like a giant chase to just get at Pigma and it feels like it derails from the actual plot with the aparoids.  We only go to Sargasso because of Pigma.  We only go to Fichina and then back to Meteo again, because of Pigma.  That’s 3 levels in a 10 level game devoted to just tracking down Pigma and chasing him.  While it makes the build up to fighting Pigma kind of nice, I personally feel like the plot could be reduced to 2 levels.  If Assault overall was a longer game, I could see them making it 3 levels.  Overall, though, in its current state, I feel like the side plot overstays its welcome and the aparoids promptly get shoved to the side in favor of “Oh no, we gotta get to Pigma!” And I get the main motive here is to show how the aparoids affect people and because of the build up, it does a good job at showing how utterly terrifying the aparoids are.  But it’s still too long given the length of Assault’s story. The only alternative to this is make Assault longer, which... honestly, it should be.  
- Revise the scene with Tricky.  I’m obviously not well-versed in dinosaur biology but I’m pretty sure dinos didn’t grow that fast from what studying I HAVE done.  And why is he suddenly king now?  Did his parents die?  He seems not affected by this at all?  Like it’s a funny scene with him, Fox, and Krystal, but it’s odd if you really look at it.  Give us, as players, more context because I’m still not even sure what happened to make Tricky suddenly the leader and... big.  As a note, you’re gonna hear me gripe a lot about the Sauria level in this post.
- The Star Wolf + Peppy sacrifice is a low effort way to raise tension/stakes and then cop out.  Oldest trick in the book, imo, is to act like you’re going to kill off important characters only for them to be alive miraculously.  And let’s face it, as an audience we all know they aren’t going to kill those characters because it’s Nintendo and those characters are too beloved.  I would’ve forgiven them for only doing this with Peppy or Star Wolf, but when you tack them both together and throw in the fact they make it seem like you’re going to have to kill General Pepper too... yeah, it’s just a bit much of the same trope over and over again.  I wanted to put a note in here about how I’m fine with the Great Fox being “sacrificed” but overall, it needed to return to the series because of it’s icon status, but I think that’s more of a gripe at Command instead of Assault.
- Keep Pigma alive.  This will conflict with a point I have later on about the game consistently having characters cheat death for easy drama points but with Pigma, I would’ve kept him fully alive... but maybe with some physical damage from the aparoids.  I understand he’s semi-alive in Command and tbh I don’t know where I stand on that.  Why keep Pigma alive, you might ask?  I feel like his character has a lot more potential than being “just the greedy guy”.  Like he’s got good potential future villain material for future games and... if I’m honest?  I just don’t see Nintendo wanting to keep Pigma dead so why even bother killing him off?  They couldn’t even commit to him being dead in Command anyways so it seems very moot.
- Bring Bill and Katt back.  Assault is acts a bit like a big reunion of all of our SF64 favorites but our two favorite side characters are suspiciously missing.  Wouldn’t Bill be out on the front lines fighting against Andrew in the beginning?  Or maybe back in Katina?  And wouldn’t Katt inevitably show up in the midst of the invasion, maybe to pointedly check in on Falco?
- Bring Andrew back for the final fight. I think Andrew being defeated early into the game is fine overall but I think bringing him back in for a reunion final fight against the aparoids would serve to really solidify that it’s really everyone vs the invading aparoid force.  It would show that not only is Star Wolf willing to put aside their differences but so is basically everyone in the Lylat System in the name of survival.  Imagine the Venomians and Cornerians working together against an aparoid fleet, giving Star Fox and Star Wolf time to attack the queen?  I just think it’d be neat and it’d open up the potential for some fun banter mid-mission.  I do understand that quite a few people consider Andrew canonically dead after Assault but personally, I feel that his defeat left his fate questionable (I’m a staunch believer that unless there’s a body, they’re probably alive, especially for Nintendo games because, again, they never like to kill people off) so him returning in Command never really bothered me.  
- In general, reconsider some of the character portrayals.  Unfortunately, when a series has a different studio for each game, character portrayals will inevitably have inconsistencies.  While I give Namco a lot of credit for putting in oodles and oodles of detail into the game (particularly the levels), I think they failed in their portrayal of Fox, at the least, and Wolf is a considerable offender as well.  While it’s obvious that Fox in Adventures was effectively modeled off of Sabre even in terms of personality, Rareware was at least able to justify Fox’s newfound jaded attitude with the passing of many years and a distinct lack of steady income, resulting in the team being in disarray.  Assault’s Fox is a stark contrast to his cynical interpretation with seemingly no explanation other than maybe “Oh, I have more money and a gf, maybe I should behave myself”.  As if the sudden change in personality wasn’t random, Fox also just seems very blah, like a blank slate stereotypical shooter game protagonist dude with little to no emotion.  Wolf is less obvious but gets slated into a mentor-like role midway through the game and ends up in a respectful rivalry with Fox... which there’s nothing inherently wrong with that except for it happening abruptly (and, I mean, Peppy is right there).  But I take less issue with this and more of an issue with the fact that there’s an entire level establishing that Wolf now runs a crime den with effectively what seems to be an army and no one bats an eye at this.  He doesn’t even call on them to help with the aparoids.  Did they all die when the aparoids attacked Meteo?  Are they safe somewhere else?  Where do they go?  How was Sargasso able to operate without the CDF being on their doorstep with warrants for arrests?
- Don’t kill all the dinosaurs.  A bit of a dramatic statement but the ending screen that showed all the damage to Sauria really bothered me.  While I understand that the dinosaurs had less of a chance against the aparoids than a more technology-focused society like Corneria, I was a bit disappointed that the decision was made to just state that a lot of tribes had been wiped out.  I know this could easily be retconned in a future game and I feel like it should be.  “But why, Amalia?  Why are you disappointed by that?”  1) It’s a little too grimdark for my tastes.  2) The fact it all happened off-screen felt very hand-wavy.  And 3) It brings into question the entire point of Adventures.  Why did we bother to save this planet if it was going to be reduced to rubble and ash 1 year later?  Where were the Krazoa in all of this?  Why did they not make an appearance at all to try to stop the invasion with their alleged powers?  It just raises too many weird questions and I feel like Namco didn’t think it through too much.  Which I mean, sure.  Family, kiddo game.  I’m not asking for bigbrain plot and lore but I’m squinting at this bit because it does feel very contrary to the lore from the previous game.
- Make the aparoids more relevant.  As nice as it is to have a random bad guy from another galaxy, I feel like there was more that could be done with the aparoids in terms of their origins.  Tiny things, mind you, not huge revelations.  Off the top of my head, they could have been tied into Krystal’s backstory to help alleviate some of the complaints that she was too random to be added to the series’ main cast.  Alternatively, they could have been a product of Andross or even a weapon prototype from Corneria that fled the lab (I actually thought the game was leaning in that direction for a bit then just Nothing Happened).  I get that the vagueness of their origins leaves room for people to speculate and speculation is nice but... when you leave too many things unknown, it starts to feel less like giving fans room to interpret and more like just doing random things for the sake of it.  I think a lore tidbit here or there would work wonders for the aparoids instead of leaving them as just borg/zerg clones.

Level-Based Changes
- Add either Aparoid RedEye or Aparoid General Scales as a boss to Sauria.  Given that this level mysteriously lacks a boss, which is just weird compared to the other levels, I think that they had the opportunity to add something cool to go along with the cinematic feel they were going for with Assault.  Assault’s cutscenes do play in a movie-like fashion and it’s clear they’re trying to make the game as epic as possible.  It’s a shame they had so much fodder for a great boss here but they failed to go through with it.  Alternatively: Add a Krazoa-Aparoid fusion.  Why?  Because Star Fox is about cool epic sci-fi and that would be cool epic sci-fi incarnate.
- Add a boss to the Aparoid Homeworld Level, aka the penultimate level.  Another one I felt was personally weird that there was no “final defense system” to challenge the team.  Would be cool to do an aerial battle over the aparoid planet with some giant flying aparoid.
- Be kinder to Sauria.  The level had some good homages but overall was incredibly small and incredibly short.  It felt like a bone tossed to Adventures fans but was not entirely true to the setting built by Rareware.  I’m... not even sure where the Sauria level is supposed to take place?  I presume it’s Walled City but it doesn’t really have the same color scheme or aesthetic?  Also where is my revised Adventures music?  Why do all the other levels get it but Sauria doesn’t? 
- Put some of those funky items from the multiplayer into the main campaign.  I don’t know why some of these things, items especially, were omitted unless it was purely due to time constraints.  I remember having missile launchers and jetpacks in the multiplayer and was a bit sad that they were not in the main campaign.  Retuning the levels and adding those in would be a nice breath of fresh air for the more tedious on-foot missions.
- More levels.  Self-explanatory.  Still sad we didn’t get the Zoness or Titania levels in the single-player mode.

I think all of the above changes would improve the game, though I recognize all of this is being said 16 years later after lots of time to contemplate Assault’s weaker points.  I’m not entirely certain how long Star Fox Assault took to develop but given that there’s obviously quite a bit scrapped from the game (an entire arcade mode was scrapped as well), I’m going to assume that the studio felt pressured to shove the game out the door and into the hands of customers.  It’s a shame, really, because I think a little bit longer in the oven would have done a lot of good.  Still, the product we got was good in its own right and a game that many people look back on fondly.  I haven’t gotten to replay it in years but I hope to quite soon.
You might wonder why I bothered typing this all out and I guess my point was this-- Assault was great but it wasn’t perfect, and while a lot of other games fall under a crushing amount of scrutiny, Assault seems to dodge it.  And don’t get me wrong-- I adore Assault.  But given that not many takes exist out there about rewriting it, I decided to give it a shot.  For variety’s sake.  
I do want to a mock up of a revised Assault story, which I think I will get to work on after completing this while all my ideas are still fresh in mind.  So stay tuned for that sometime in the near future.  I will also be doing my Adventures mock up at some point but probably not for a little bit as I do wanna focus some of my free time on actual fic-writing.

She hears a scream.
So naturally, she reacts to it.
Reacting to something has taken so long before.
Flames whipping towards her faster than she can acknowledge them has never been such a prolonging experience. It feels like hours. It’s only been seconds.
She stretches her arms wide as she shoves Byleth out of the way.
The woman barely stumbles, just falls flat onto her back, and stares up at her with wide eyes. Wide eyes rapidly filling with tears.
She’s only ever seen Byleth cry once. It was that day, that one horrible day with the incident with Monica no, Kronya, where her father had taken his last breath to a dagger.
In the numb roaring from her ears, she wonders why exactly Byleth is crying.
The second heat licks her bare skin she realises what she’s done.
Edelgard’s throat feels tight. Too tight.
It was funny in a way. Funny in a bitter, cruel way. The esteemed Emperor of Adrestia, who has survived many wars, prevailed in hundreds of battles, toughened through blows from swords, spears, axes and bows, you name it, can’t survive flames so seemingly easy to avoid.
Something presses against her heart. It takes her seconds to realise it’s a hand. A soft shaking hand. She sees Byleth’s mouth move but no words seem to come out.
The roars in her ears shatter along with the surroundings.
“That was unimpressive.”
The voice startles Edelgard awake, and she’s unable to hold in the flinch when she’s greeted with darkness only pierced by a small green light.
Edelgard takes a staggering step forward. Her stomach hurdles when she glances beneath her feet, only to see pitch black darkness.
The strange voice continues. “At least I came to your rescue, even if you did interrupt my sleep.” A yawn. “Okay, come on over. How bad is everything? How far back do we need to go?”
“Who are you?” Edelgard demands. Her voice wavers but she tries to keep her voice strong.
A figure steps into the limelight, wearing an intricate dress of blues, reds and white. Long green hair swishes over a small and slim frame, though it doesn’t seem like it’s weighing the person down like it should.
“Oh, you must have hit your head.” She mock laughs. “Ha. Ha. Ha.” She claps slowly with each word. Green eyes lock with Edelgard’s. She blinks. “Oh.” She blinks again, then frowns. “You’re not Byleth.”
“Byleth?” Edelgard’s voice comes out in a growl, a shaky growl, but a growl no less. She glares at the girl in front of her. “Wh-what have you done to her?”
The girl looks affronted. Her eyebrows draw upward, and her jaw falls slightly agape. “Are you accusing me of doing something to Byleth?” she demands in a snappish tone. “Because all I have done is saved her. Many times.”
“But then-” Her voice cracks. “-then where is she?”
Her eyes sting with tears.
The girl sighs. She sits down on a throne which was non-existent until seconds ago, pulling her knees to her chest. “I don’t know.”
And here comes the tummel of questions making a ruckus in Edelgard’s head.
“What do you mean, you don’t know?” she cries, feeling tears streak down her cheeks. “What-what do you mean? Where is she? Where am I? Who are you? What-”
“Woah, woah, woah, when I say I don’t know…” The girl inhales sharply. “It means I actually don’t know. I have no idea where Byleth is. But we are-” She glances around. “Somewhere. But my name is Sothis.”
Something in Edelgard snaps. “Sothis?” she growls. “You’re the-the proclaimed ‘Goddess’?”
The girl – Sothis – pinches the bridge of her nose. “Oh, so you’re the girl Byleth yammers on non-stop about.”
She pauses. “What?”
“Byleth has told me about you. About how your goal to eliminate the church, therefore eliminating all belief in the Goddess, AKA me.” She pauses before adding “She’s also spoken very highly of you. You’re important to her.”
Her throat clenches. She feels tears well in her eyes.
She’s important to me too.
“Is that so?” Sothis tuts, pursing her lips.
Edelgard flinches. She takes a wary step back “I said nothing,” she says, even if it’s more like she’s convincing herself than Sothis.
Sothis laughs. She actually laughs, even though it’s more of a delighted giggle. “Oh, you have so much to learn!” She’s wearing a carefree smile, nothing like her sleepy, disoriented gaze from only seconds ago.
“Where are we?” Edelgard repeats. She’s slowly gaining her bearings. “What happened?”
Sothis groans, dragging a hand down her face. “You died,” Sothis tells her. “You died against that dragon by protecting Byleth.”
The reality hits her like a slap to the face. It stings. “I… died?”
“Are you really this thick-skulled?” the Goddess snaps, slapping her hands down on the sides of the throne, to which a resounding smack echoes through the dark area. “You died. You’re dead. Dead. Dead. Dead! Yet I have no idea why you’re here now and Byleth isn’t.”
“Byleth’s… has she come here? Byleth knows you.”
The look Sothis sends her is terrifying, even without words to accompany it.
Byleth.
Her eyes sting again, though she makes no move to wipe the tears off her cheeks.
“You seem to not know much,” Sothis muses. “Would you like a reminder of the battle?”
Before Edelgard can say a word, Sothis clicks her fingers and Edelgard is staggering through a road with flaming buildings on either side.
She stares ahead, vision blurring as she tries to make sense of this situation. Her back presses against the wall without her knowledge and she feels something squeeze her hand.
Dorothea looks down at her, smiling nervously, yet she’s still smiling. Her hand holds Edelgard’s, and she squeezes it once more. “This’ll be fine,” she murmurs. It’s almost like she’s trying to convince herself more than she’s trying to convince Edelgard.
She doesn’t recall this from the battle. She doesn’t recall walking down these paths, ever the same despite the minor differences. She doesn’t recall Dorothea clutching her hand, because no, Byleth was the one clutching hers as they sliced through their enemies and approached Rhea.
A squeaky “Y-yes, it will” slips out of her mouth.
Dorothea walks a few steps forward and Edelgard follows and holds a bow out, squinting at the Demonic Beast snarling at nothing in particular.
The thing is she’s using a bow. She doesn’t even think she’s touched one before.
Empty red eyes suddenly lock with hers and she feels herself flinch and yelp. The arrow flings out of her grip, barely skimming the Demonic Beast’s scales.
The Demonic Beast stomps forward, whipping it’s tale back and forth when Dorothea lunges in front and blasts a Thoron at it.
The creature takes the blow, and Edelgard uses that as a chance to use her bow again.
Why am I using a bow?
That question remains unanswered as she launches another arrow at it. This time it hit’s the Demonic Beast’s forehead. She feels euphoric for a little moment. Almost smiles. Doesn’t. Especially as it’s tail swings around, so fast neither of them can avoid it and knocks Dorothea over some broken picket fences to some Church Soldiers and Edelgard into a crumbling building.
A brick falls and slams against her arm.
The bow snaps into pieces. The brick crushes her arm. Edelgard screams, something so shrill it can’t possibly belong to her.
“Bernie!” Dorothea cries. Edelgard freezes questioning the name of her ally, her friend before another brick clatters down, landing inches away from her face. While her head whips to Edelgard, a spear pierces through her stomach and her head lolls back, blood spitting out of her mouth. “B…ern…”
Dorothea. Edelgard cries out, though by the looks of it Bernadetta is too. Dorothea gone. Dorothea who didn’t care about anyone’s differences. Dorothea who treated every member of the Black Eagles as equals. Dorothea who comforted everyone in times of need. Dorothea who was a beautiful, beloved, and kind-hearted soul who did not deserve to fight in a war she didn’t even belong in.
“What will you do, when the war is finished?” Edelgard had asked one particularly sunny day whilst the two were having tea.
Dorothea had smiled, green eyes full of something so sweet it warmed Edelgard’s heart. It was always a pleasure to see her friend, so awfully affected by war, smiling so happily. “I’d like to return to the opera, I guess,” she had replied, her lips quirking up. “Though I’ll see where my life takes me.”
Her body goes limp.
Another two bricks fall down, and Edelgard’s vision turns dark before she wakes up again nearby Caspar and Lysithea, the two shielding her and fending off the opposing soldiers.
In the distance she can see Catherine, holding Thunderbrand out and staring down at the three with an amused grin tugging at her lips. The sight is sickening. Edelgard holds her hands out, fixing up a gash on Caspar’s upper arm while he takes a breather against the enemies. The wound slowly fixes itself up.
Lysithea uses a Dark Spikes.
Then Caspar goes back to swinging his axe.
Stunned, Edelgard feels herself stare at her hands. She’d never learnt healing spells before. …Why did she know them now?
Catherine runs forward to the three of them suddenly, when Lysithea finishes off the last Church soldier in the area they’re in.
Caspar barely avoids the hit. Lysithea makes a noise slightly resembling the squeak of a mouse (Mice, running around her while she’s caged in her cell) and Edelgard finds herself slowly backing onto a healing tile.
Catherine and Caspar are fighting, newly donned gauntlets against a heroes relic. Lysithea from behind blasts spell after spell at Catherine, obviously exhausted but the girl is not letting up. Edelgard admires her for that. She’s always admired Lysithea, and her relentlessness to not let her younger age get the best of her.
She’s damn powerful as well.
Everything seems to be good. Everything seems to be fine.
Edelgard takes a deep breath in. Then everything goes to hell.
Caspar gets stabbed in the arm with Thunderbrand. He cries out, staggering back and losing his focus on Catherine. Edelgard cries out too, reaching out to try and use Psychic but it’s no use since Caspar gets stabbed again and again.
A scream of rage comes from Lysithea, and just before she finishes the final blow, the young woman uses a critical Dark Spikes which hits Catherine with perfect accuracy. The knight falls down. Thunderbrand falls out of her hand.
“Caspar,” Edelgard finds herself sobbing, though her voice isn’t actually hers. She sounds like Linhardt. “Caspar, please, Cas-”
A hand touches Edelgard’s (Linhardt, she reminds herself, not that it will do much) and Caspar looks up, smiling dumbly. “I got to fight her,” he croaks. “I…I won too.”
Blood pours from his wounds, the stabs scattered around his body. Edelgard feels the sudden urge to throw up. She holds the bile in. Tears are streaming down her face as she clutches Caspar’s body, pulling him to her chest.
“Caspar…” she repeats, not that her words will do much. “Cas-aspar, I-”
“Shh, Lin.” He reaches up to press a finger against her lips, silencing her. He opens his mouth to speak but his eyes suddenly stare at her unblinkingly. He’s limp in her hold.
“Linhardt…” Lysithea starts to say, reaching forward but Edelgard stands up, still gripping onto Caspar despite how much her arms are trembling under his weight.
She sobs and hates how raw she (Linhardt) sounds right now. Linhardt shouldn’t deserve this. Linhardt who already had so many struggles piled upon the other. Linhardt who needs Caspar, and Caspar who needed Linhardt.
It hurts even more now that she realises the real reason Caspar wasn’t there when Linhardt and Lysithea met up with them, only to meet their immediate downfall after stumbling dazedly too close to Rhea.
Her vision twists and she’s now stumbling along with Hubert, stabbing at each enemy who crosses them with her lance. Behind her she sees Petra, struggling with another Demonic Beast, despite each blast Hubert hits it with.
A claw slices her chest open, and she screams, the sound resonating through Fhirdiad.
She turns back, launching her horse towards the Demonic Beast and digging his lance into a small spot of bare skin where the scales of it didn’t cover.
The Demonic Beast makes a ghastly sound before falling to it’s end.
“Ferdinand!” Hubert yells. “What are you-”
His words are silenced so quickly it’s deafening. His mouth falls agape as a lance finds it’s way through his middle.
Edelgard cries out his name. She sounds so heartbroken it makes her want to burst into tears all over again. Hubert deserved more.
No, she thinks with clenched teeth as she directs her horse towards Hubert’s attacker. They all deserved more. So much more than being swept up by me into this godawful war.
She hates herself for this. She’s never hated herself so much before.
She ends up stabbing at Hubert’s attacker, stabbing again and again until her vision is blurred with blood, sweat and tears. Blood, sweat and tears. Fitting, if not for the situation. Fitting if not for the-
Everything goes black. Once more.
Edelgard opens her eyes to darkness. She’s kneeling on the floor, sobbing, and wailing as the images of her allies, her friends getting murdered in front of her.
“Oh don’t cry,” Sothis soothes, but her sympathy doesn’t seem like real sympathy. “There’s nothing you can do about it now.”
Edelgard staggers up, swaying on her feet, and wipes the tears from her face. She glares angrily at Sothis. But her next words come out in a quiet whisper.
“What happened to Byleth?”
Byleth, who I need, and who I love.
Sothis pauses. Silence hangs in the room like the tension, and it’s only broken when she replies in a broken little whisper “I don’t know.”
Mint green eyes matching mint green hair.
A small smile barely noticeable but still there.
Deadpanning whenever Edelgard makes a joke.
Hugging her, hugging them. Comforting them all.
Her obsession with fishing she never seemed to get over.
Her love for fish that could rival Flayn’s.
Her scream, haunting Edelgard for five years.
“This is going to be a problem,” Sothis mutters. “Your thoughts are solely Byleth-centric. Is there anything else that goes in that strange little mind of yours?” She waves her hand in Edelgard’s general direction in emphasis.
“How long must I stay here for?” Edelgard sighs.
There’s a brighter glint in Sothis’ eyes. Her lips quirk up. “Not too much longer as it seems!” she exclaims, clapping her hands together and standing up. The action reminds Edelgard of when she was a child. Young. Carefree. Innocent.
Oblivious to the blatant cruelness the world harboured.
“El…” A whisper. “El, I know I’m bad with words, but I need you to know you can talk to me.”
Hands clutching hers. A squeeze. Locking eyes.
“My teacher, I…” Averting gaze. Letting go of warm hands. “Now is not the time.”
“It’s always the time if you need help.”
A smile, an obvious façade that doesn’t sell as well as Claude’s ones did. Trembling fingers. Warmth dispersing from memory.
“I am fine. Though I thank you, for taking the time to see if I am okay. I appreciate it.”
Why didn’t she just hold on a little longer?

Stay With Me by Better Love - Truthfully this song makes me think about like 4 different ships but mostly I want to write some PoeFinn or PoeFinnRey for this one. If you listen to the song, and you all should, it's basically about meeting this person, having such a strong connection, and just staying together. Being together. If you know then you know.
Cut You a PIece from 35MM - This, imo, is a sad song and everytime i listen to it I think of MCU style SamSteve! When I listen to it I think about one of those slice of life style stories with snap shots of their lives together. Its sad cause there's a death at the end.
Hot by Marisa Maino - So this is actually mostly a silly little college au story staring Sam, John, and Lemar. Thats all Ive got right now. Its gonna be funny though (to me at least)

It's OK If You Forget Me by Astrid S - This is another MCU SamSteve but like. This song is about a relationship that didn't last and it was a normal relationship. You have ups and down but it ends and you're not sad or devastated or gutted. Kinda wish you were, cause things were good and they meant something and you cared about each other, so it should hurt. But it doesn't. And that's great, going out on a good note, and it sad cause those times are over now, and its natural cause everything ends eventually. And that's the vibe bby!

Family:
Do your muses plan on having children/or have children?
In the canon of the MCU I don’t see them having kids.  But, in my ideal universe they would have Vali and Narfi.
If so, how many children do your muses want/have?
Two boys and that’s just right for them.
Who is the favorite parent?
Sigyn. Loki might let them get away with murder, but Sigyn has those Mom powers; she can find anything, knows exactly who needs to by where and when, makes exactly the right meal for what ails, the works.  Loki is the parent to call when you need to hide a body.  Sigyn is the parent you call when you need a good hug.
Who is the authoritative parent?
Sigyn.  She’s authoritative, but fair.  Loki has a hard time disciplining his kids.  He doesn’t want them to resent him the way he does his own father. So, if he can avoid being the bad guy with them, he will.
Who is more likely to allow the children to have a day off school?
Loki.  Sigyn will insist that unless they have a fever, they need to be in school. But, Loki gets that sometimes pretending to be sick so you don’t have to go means there’s something else going on.  So, he’ll let them get away with it, for one day, then straight back.
Who lets the children indulge in sweets and junk food when the other isn’t around?
Loki.  Not many, but just enough for him to make them promise not to tell Mom.  They to anyway, but it’s the thought that counts.
Who turns up to extra curricular activities to support their children?
They both do, but Loki has been banned from some events. He can and will fight a Karen on sight; or rather mess with them so nothing can be proved, but everyone knows it’s Loki’s fault. 
Who goes to parent teacher interviews?
Sigyn for the most part.  Loki at least comes to the first meeting.  If everything goes smoothly with the teacher, he’ll continue on, but if there is some sort of “disagreement” between himself and the teacher, Sigyn knows better than to leave him alone in a room with them.  However, if the teacher is being particularly unfair to their children, she’ll let him have at it.
Who changes the diapers?
Sigyn.  Loki always manages to pull some sort of disappearing act right when they need a changing.
Who gets up in the middle of the night to feed the baby?
Loki.  As stated in previous headcanons, he’s not much of a sleeper to being with. It’s easier on Sigyn to just let her sleep.  Plus, he genuinely enjoys the feeling of carrying his sons in his arms until they drift back off to sleep.  For a brief moment, he feels like he’s doing something right.
Who spends the most time with the children?
Sigyn, but only by a slim margin.  There aren’t many instances where both Loki and Sigyn aren’t together with the kids. The difference comes from all the places Loki has gotten himself banned from.
Who packs their lunch boxes?
Sigyn.  Loki cannot cook to save his life and is lost trying to put a nutritious lunch together.  That’s my headcanon and I’m sticking to it.
Who gives their children ‘the talk’?
Loki, or at least, Sigyn tries to make Loki do it.  It’s not that she can’t, she just thinks it would be funny.  Loki flounders for a bit, but once he realizes his wife is teasing him, he decides to answer, with complete seriousness, “a stork does it”.  And when the boys start asking more questions, he doubles down, creating the most elaborate backstory he can come up with until Sigyn has to cave and tell them the truth.
Who cleans up after the kids?
Loki.  As much as his life is a mess and he has a tendency not to clean up his own messes unless forced to, he likes a clean house.  He and Sigyn both try to train the boys to pick up after themselves, but there’s always something lying in the middle of the living room.
Who worries the most?
Loki.  While Sigyn’s fears are more of the “are they safe” variety, Loki’s fears are more abstract.  Is he being a good father? What if they grow up to hate him? What if he fails? What am I doing wrong?
Deep down he feels that if he were to disappear, his children would be fine, because they’d have Sigyn.  But, if Sigyn were gone, he would be lost.
Who are the children more likely to learn their first swear word from?
Valkyrie.  Loki and Sigyn don’t swear that much to begin with.  It’s Valkyrie who lets a frustrated “fuck” slip right in front of the boys.

Affection:
Who likes to cuddle?
They both do.  They’re a surprisingly touchy couple.  Cuddling is just the natural extension of that.
Who is the little spoon?
They switch off.  There are days where Sigyn just wants to snuggle up and be held.  She naturally curles into herself when she sleeps and likes to feel secure. And then there are days when Loki is just so tired, that nothing but laying his head down and listening to his wife’s heart beat will cure him.
Who gets naughty in the most inappropriate of places?
Loki.  He loves nothing more than teasing Sigyn in public.  She’s developed such a brilliant poker face in court, it’s his personal challenge to himself to crack it.  It becomes a kind of game of what he can get away with. 
Who struggles to keep their hands to themself?  
Loki.  He’s not sure where it came from, but he finds himself constantly searching for her touch.  It doesn’t even need to be sexual in nature.  He just wants to feel her skin pressed against his. He needs the reminder that she’s there, that she chose him and she’s not pulling away. It frightens him sometimes, just how much he needs that touch.
How long can they cuddle until one becomes uncomfortable?
They’ve perfected the cuddle over a thousands years together and can go on for some time.  Chances are somebody will need a glass of water or need to use the restroom before it’s a matter of numb limbs.
Who gives the most kisses?
Sigyn.  While Loki can’t seem to keep his hands off her, Sigyn can’t seem to keep her lips to herself. They’re usually small in nature; a peck on the cheek, a soothing forehead kiss, or even just as a morning greeting. They’re casual and freely given, and there are times Loki has no idea what to do with himself after.
What is their favourite non-sexual activity?
They can often be found reading together, studying magic, or just talking.  Honestly, the most likely place you’re to find them at a banquet is in a corner somewhere with Loki whispering in her ear while she tries desperately not to laugh.
Where is their favourite place to cuddle?
In the window sill of the palace library.  Loki will lay back and have Sigyn rest comfortably between his legs.  Sometimes one of them is reading a book aloud, or Sigyn is holding a book open, with Loki reading the same pages just over her shoulder.
Who is more likely to playfully grope the other? 
Loki, hands down.
How often do they get time to themselves?
Surprisingly often.  They both have duties to perform as part of the royal family, but as soon as they’re done, there’s not much stopping them from spending all their time together.

Three Acts

Epilogue
(From this point onward, the chapters will not be illustrated. I attempted to illustrate them, but it diverges from canon so much that I couldn’t find a single scene that worked. I’m really sorry about it. But still, I hope you enjoy the epilogue…and whatever that entails.)
I’m in a wheelchair at Mary’s funeral. The doctors told John I was too weak to leave the hospital, but I insisted on going. Their concerns were warranted, after all- the last time I left, I nearly bled out in an abandoned building. But having my best friend…
Perhaps maybe more…?
I shake the thought away.
I can’t ruin this.
Being with John is the least I can do, and the most I could ever ask for.
I don’t deserve him.
Everyone that was there to pay their respects have already left- not that many people came to begin with. Most washed their hands of the whole situation when they found out who Mary truly was, and what she had done to us. Only John and I stayed afterwards.
Together. Once again, together.
We remain at the grave, respectively sitting and standing in companionable silence. Neither of us are sure what to say- to each other, or to Mary, I’m not sure. It’s fairly overcast, and I can see the beginnings of storm clouds rolling in above us.
How appropriate.
I exhale and tentatively steal a glance at John. He looks calm, but I can see a range of emotions flashing in his blue eyes as he stares at Mary’s gravestone. One of his hands is balled into a shaking fist, and the other loosely holds a bouquet of white lilies.
“Sherlock,” he murmurs, his voice cracking with emotion and painful, unsaid words. “Sherlock, what…what am I supposed to say…?”
He killed his wife.
I swallow hard. I’m not sure what to say, either, but anything I could do…“Do…would you like me to speak first?”
He killed his wife for me.
John nods stiffly and stands back, before hesitating and pushing my chair a bit closer. He looks as though he wants to say something to me, but he bites back the words and keeps them to himself.
I take a deep, shaky breath. “…Mary. I…I…want you to know that…Even if- if you shot me. Even if you…with Rosie…Even after all that, I- I think…I forgive you. You were selfish. And you- you lied, and you hurt everyone. But…you were also kind. And you were selfless, sometimes. And I saw some of the love you had f-for everyone, even if you don’t want to admit it.”
Where is this coming from? I hated Mary, I hated her, I really did, I hated her smile and her words and her subtle manipulation throughout the entirety of our fabricated friendship-
“Sherlock…” John says softly, urging me to stop getting lost in my mind. It’s funny how he can do that with a single look…
I can’t stop. Not now.
“-And…and I know I should be…the last person who tells you about love, because…because I’ve only truly…truly known what it meant after meeting John.” I don’t look at John. I’m too afraid of how he’ll react. “And…and you. I don’t…believe in the afterlife, you’re aware. But…I- I hope…” I feel hot tears burning my eyes. “I hope you’re at peace, Mary.”
John rests a hand on my shoulder as I choke back tears. I flinch at the sudden contact. He doesn’t say anything further as I take deep breaths to regain my composure.
I shouldn’t be this emotional. I shouldn’t care.
“Sherlock,” he repeats again, the barest trace of a smile on his face. “How- how do I compete with that?”
I laugh and lean into his touch. It feels warm, comforting, loving.
It feels right.
I smile weakly back at him. “Just say what's on your mind. You’ll be all right.” And I mean it. He will be all right.
He sighs and walks forward. A moment passes before he finally builds up the courage to begin speaking- and once he starts, it all rushes out of him like an unblockaded river. “Mary. You were my wife. Once. And…and yes, I shot you. But you shot Sherlock, so I think we’re even. You were a liar. And a killer. But I suppose that’s my type, yeah? I can’t help going for the crazy ones. It’s…it’s my addiction.” He glances towards me, pain in his eyes, before looking back. “I just…I don’t think I could forgive you, normally. But…if…if Sherlock could- if my favourite bloody sociopath could find it in his heart to…I…I think I can, too. Goodbye, Mary. I think I’ll be happier now.”
He deserves it. John Watson has been through far too much heartache, he deserves to have a bit of happiness.
“John, are you all right?”
His expression lightens a bit, as though he’s gotten a lot off of his chest.
I suppose, in a way, he has. Catharsis can be a wonderful thing.
“Yeah, Sherlock. I’m all right. For the first time…in…in a while. Come on. I’ve got to finish moving my stuff back to Baker Street, and I’ll be damned if you use being shot as an excuse not to help.”
I smile softly. “No excuses?”
“None,” he agrees, before leaning down and pressing a chaste kiss against my lips. “I think we’ve been making excuses for far too long.”
I know we have. Things will be different, at first. It’ll take a bit of getting used to. But I think we can do it.
Sherlock Holmes…and John Watson.
¿?MThIeSS?MEnd¿???
“R, sweetheart, do you have eyes on Sherlock Holmes?” A smooth voice- just like honey- creeps into R’s ear like a particularly cunning virus.
R swallows bitterly as her lips curl into a snarl. “Yes, sir. He’s at the grave,” she growls, her American accent feeling much more natural than the British one she had been faking for so many years.
“Excellent,” the voice says, which isn’t the most original comment, considering how many criminal masterminds have said ‘excellent’ in regards to evil plans before. “Ugh, isn’t he boring?”
“Who?” R asks reluctantly.
“John. So plain, so obviously in love- oh, I think he finally kissed his little boytoy! Bravo, John, it only took you five years!” The voice is taunting, emanating energy as though it would never again have a chance to play. “I’m sorry, that’s a bit of a sore spot, isn’t it?”
“Of course not, sir,” R says curtly, ignoring the previous musings. “Would you like me to eliminate them?”
“No, no, no!” the voice shouts viciously, making R flinch. “Don’t you dare touch a single curl on that pretty thing’s head! I want Sherlock to recover and be healthy for our next round.” He says ‘round’ as though it’s such an intimate thing- it’s altogether rather surreal.
As much as R would like to put a bullet in each of their heads, she controls her impulses. God knows what he would do to her if she did. “Yes, sir.”
The voice groans. “Stop with the formalities, Mary. It’s so dull, and you of all people should know how much I despise dull people.” He lowers his tone to something dark and deathly soft. “Refer to me as ‘sir’ one more time, and I will string your bloody corpse up in Regent’s Park for the birds to have at you.”
Mary swallows, her gun shaking violently from her sniper’s post. “With all due respect, Mr. Moriarty, Mary is no longer my name,” she whispers.
“Ah, well, it suits you!” Moriarty exclaims over the comms, his voice back to its regular gusto. “Head back to the car, Mary. We need to discuss your punishment.”
Mary pales. “Punishment, Mr. Moriarty? But- I haven’t-“
He laughs. It sends shivers up her spine. “Mary, Mary, quite the contrary,” he quips. “You nearly killed my favourite pet. Shooting him near the heart- tsk, tsk, I expected better of you. Moriarty interrupts her with a shout. “BUT I suppose I’ll be lenient, just this once.” He seems to be barely holding back deranged giggles. “Instead of taking your hand, I’ll settle for a finger. Off you pop!”
The line cuts off abruptly as Mary feels a needle plunge into her neck, and she suddenly wishes she hadn’t worn a bulletproof vest when confronting Sherlock…

Catriona’s deal with their mother and a vow to return that would bring them back time and time again - even against their will.
3.5k words. As with most of this arc of their pre-canon, general CW for a manipulative parent. Senga’s a piece of shit club unite.

The two months that Catriona had spent in Prakra had been glorious. 
It was worth the two awful sunburns to have spent that much time in the sun, freckles now spread across more of their skin that had once been unblemished alabaster for all their mother’s fretting over their appearance over the years. 
Catriona had cut their hair for the first time, too - it had fallen nearly to their waist at thirteen, and the heat had made the weight and length of it unbearable in the height of a Prakran summer when back home, half the country was covered in a blanket of snow. It fell midway between their shoulder blades when they were done, and they were excited to get it up off their neck and feel the breeze above their collar. Everything before had been simple trims, enough to keep their hair healthy, but not enough to feel different. 
And now, in March, with the wind pulling through their cropped hair and the collar of their linen top flapping beneath their open jacket, they sailed home to Rosinmoor, down the Strait of Seals to the small inlet that would lead up to Castle Kintyre. 
Catriona sighed, shifting slightly on the rigging and propping their chin against the lines as they watched the world go by. 
They weren’t looking forward to returning home. 
Catriona, Edrine, and Sachairi had celebrated Hogmanay in the quiet of Myrna’s cottage - Foxhall, they’d come to learn - and after the holiday had ended and Edrine left for home, Sachairi had reluctantly returned to the castle. 
Catriona didn’t - they left without a word, choosing instead to let their grandmother inform their mother that Catriona would be leaving with her on her trip to Prakra mere hours before they were due to depart. It felt cowardly, but a part of them knew that their mother never would have let them go if they’d walked back into that place. 
Senga Canonach could hold a grudge, and Catriona knew they wouldn’t be exempt for what they’d done. They’d broken so many rules, leaving like that, and they couldn’t help but worry about what was to come.
But...they’d do it again. They really, really wanted to do it again, even if they were punished for it. 
When they’d arrived in Prakra, Myrna had gone straight to a dig site a few miles from the base of the Bulan Mountains, evidently asked to perform a few facial reconstructions on remains that had been found in the study of and early Prakran battleground to try and determine who some of those people might have been. Approximations, Myrna had called them, of who might have been - returning faces to those lost to time. 
While Myrna’s charcoal scritch-scritch-scritched away at the paper, Catriona couldn’t help but marvel at the smoothness of the bone beneath their thumbs, idly stroking the pads of their fingers along the cheekbone - the zygomatic, Myrna told them - as they tried to imagine what they might have been like in life. 
For a lack of better expression, they could feel it in their bones that they were meant to be elsewhere, anywhere if it weren’t Castle Kintyre and the Canonach estate. But mother would never let them go. And as Castle Kintyre, as it came into view at the top of the cliffs with its windows glowing with warm light, Catriona couldn’t help but think of the wisps. 
From Melinlaesh to Kintyre and everywhere in between, the children of Rosinmoor were warned of wisps - or ‘spunkies’, as they were often called - and Catriona had been no exception. They remembered being told to never follow a light if you didn’t know where it came from, or they’d certainly meet their doom. They were omens of death, more often than not, appearing along roads funeral processions traveled or sending ships to their watery graves after being mistaken for harbor lights by an unfortunate sailor.
Funny to think that going to the place that was supposed to be home felt like they were following the spunkies to their own demise.  
They lingered on the rigging as long as they possibly could, until the sailors began their calls to bring the ship to berth and they had to climb down to stay out of their way.
When Catriona rejoined their grandmother on the deck, it was as if she knew what lingered on her grandchild’s mind - and Myrna only laid a hand on her shoulder, squeezing it once, a silent reassurance that she was there if they needed her. 
“What am I going to do about my mother?” Catriona asked eventually, and Myrna let out a long breath through her nose, eyes fixed on the lights of Castle Kintyre. 
“I’ll handle her in the morning. Most of the family will be in bed for the night, save for perhaps some of your cousins. Monroe is undoubtedly asleep, big bairn that he is.” Myrna playfully nudged Catriona, who smiled a little at the thought of their great uncle. “Your mother may be upset with you, but in time, it’ll pass. And perhaps she’ll realize you were overdue for your chance to leave the nest.”
“I want to leave again soon.” Catriona caught Myrna’s smile out of the corner of her eye. “Where are you going next?”
“I’m not certain. For once I didn’t have anything lined up after I finished an assignment. Perhaps we can take a more leisurely trip until I get another - is there anywhere in particular you’d like to go?”
“I’ve always liked your drawings of Venterre.” They mused, rocking back and forth on their heels. “I remember you telling me stories about your trip to Lulia with Balfour.”
Myrna smiled a little at that. “Balfour loved Lulia. Said they’d never seen stars prettier than those here in Rosinmoor, but Lulia felt like their home away from home. We used to have an apartment there, but...I sold it some time after they died. Couldn’t bring myself to go back for many years.”
Catriona frowned a little, tugging on the edge of their shirt. “I’m sorry, Granny, I didn’t mean to bring up a bad memory…” 
“Oh, dinna fash, my darling.” She leaned forward, resting her elbows on the railing to gaze over the infinite dark of the sea. “To remember those I’ve lost is to keep them with me. And perhaps I’ve been a little blessed in all this time, because even though my Balfour - and my Astor, god rest them both - have left this world, they aren’t gone. I see pieces of them in you nearly every day.”
They perked a little at that, already itching for the bits of stories Myrna was willing to give. Myrna laughed at Catriona’s visible interest and nodded, closing her eyes as she spoke. 
“You’ve got the same desire for knowledge as Balfour. Same taste in books, too, judging by what you pilfer from my study. You make the same face as Astor when you’re thinking, down to the wrinkles in your nose and the creases between your brows. And you’re not nearly as sneaky as you think. When you’re up to something, your mouth twitches at the corners like you’re holding back a smile. It was a dead giveaway when Balfour was planning a surprise, but I found it endearing.” Myrna’s fingers drummed against the wood, humming thoughtfully. “You look like Balfour, too. I suppose Astor as well, since he was a ringer for them. You got their nose, and you’ve got dimples - on both sides, like Astor, Balfour only had the one on their right. Same shape to your jaw, the same cheekbones…”
Myrna reached out and playfully pinched Catriona’s cheek, smiling as they groaned and swatted lightly at her hand. 
“But for as much as I see them in you, I want you to remember that I love you for you. I’ve had time to heal. So when morning comes, I’ll book us passage to Lulia, and I’ll happily make new memories with you. Sound fair?”
“Sounds fair.” Catriona leaned into Myrna’s side, tucked happily under her arm - though they were quickly approaching the same height - and remained there, watching the sea go by until the ship pulled into the inlet, and the gangway finally fell on the shores of home.

Despite Catriona’s fears of facing their mother, they were glad to see the rest of their family. 
By the time they made it up to the castle, most of the family had begun to turn in - though Myrna had sent word ahead of their return, she’d been unsure when the ship would actually make it to shore, and told them not to wait up - but those who were still awake were happy to linger and chat while they raided the kitchens for leftovers. 
Sachairi, the person Catriona had wanted to see most, had just gone to bed, evidently falling asleep in his seat trying to wait for them to come back. So Catriona tucked their little gift for him away in their bag again, alongside the one for Edrine, and made their way slowly through the halls to bed. Myrna would remain, happy to pick at her siblings and laugh with them about how of course her twin was the first to go to bed among all of them, though they all knew he’d be up with the sun while they slept in. 
Catriona didn’t miss the presence, or lack thereof, of their mother - who had apparently turned in quite suddenly once the scouts reported the ship at the inlet. Part of them wondered if she was avoiding their grandmother, who had been the embodiment of ‘hell hath no fury’ after the revelations Catriona had overheard all those months ago. 
Still, they were happy to traipse as quietly as they could to their bedroom, looking forward to the morning and catching up with their cousin again. The day had been long, as had the journey from so far north, and they were looking forward to crawling into the comfort of their own bed.
They didn’t pause to take in the view of the Frozen Sea nor the twinkling lights of Rosafearn, heading straight for their bed and crashing into it, only taking the time to kick off their shoes and jacket before snuggling into the warmth that awaited them. 
Sometime later, in the place between slumber and awareness, they heard their bedroom door squeal open. After a moment of pause it would then click shut, making them blearily look up to follow the warm glow of the candle in someone’s hand as it made its way closer to their bed. 
“Granny?” Catriona whispered, rubbing at their eye with the heel of their hand to try and combat some of the blurriness that came from half-slumber - only to freeze as a soft laugh answered them instead. 
“No, Catriona, not your grandmother. I heard you’d come home and wanted to say goodnight.” Senga murmured, lowering herself to sit on the edge of their bed and gently setting the candle down on the night table. Catriona heard the soft clicking of their lamp turning before the light flared to life, casting both mother and child in warm golden light. 
Catriona couldn’t help but think of how cold their mother’s eyes looked in comparison to the warmth they were bathed in. 
“I thought you went to bed.” They said eventually, pulling the covers a little higher as they rolled over to face Senga more fully. “I wasn’t expecting to see you until breakfast.”
“Well, you’ve been gone all this time. Can you blame me for not wanting to wait a minute more than I must?” Senga’s fingertips smoothed along their forehead, brushing back already tousled strands of hair. 
They shrunk back slightly, pulling the blankets a little closer to their chin.
“I’m sorry, mother, I didn’t mean to upset you.” They said softly, scrunching the fabric between their fingers. “How are you?”
“Oh, much better now that you’re home, where you belong.” Catriona watched as Senga tugged on the single silver lock at her left temple and swept it behind her ear, twirling it loosely around her finger as she 
It was a familiar gesture - one Catriona knew typically meant an expression of her displeasure would be soon to follow.
“You know, you had me worried sick. Imagine how I would have felt if something would have happened to you so far from home, Catriona, without you even properly saying goodbye.”
There it was. 
“I was perfectly fine, mother, Granny wouldn’t have let anything happen to me.” They said softly, trying to keep their voice from shaking. “I just needed some time for myself, that’s all.” 
“Because you snooped.” Senga frowned. “You have no one but yourself to blame, Catriona, for listening to things not meant for you to hear.”
“But I did hear it, mother, and it hurt me, and I wanted -” They tried, but Senga cut them off, tone sharp and clipped and silenced them in a heartbeat.
“Wanted what, to get back at me? Hurt me in some way? Well, you’ve done it, and I don’t know where we can go from here.” Senga huffed, crossing one leg over the other before sighing, rubbing two fingers against her temple. 
“This isn’t how I wanted it to go when you got back. I don’t want to argue with you, Catriona, I want to put things back to normal. You’ve had your fun, and now it’s time to come back to the real world. Your lessons will start again next week, and we’ll talk about some new boundaries in the morning, before breakfast. I’ll walk you down the steps myself.”
Catriona’s heart squeezed painfully at that - to go from the freedom of their trip to tethered once again to someone’s hand to even traverse their home - and the words bubbled up before they could stop them, making Senga pause as she reached to turn out the light again. 
“But Granny is taking me to Lulia…” 
They trailed off as they noticed Senga’s brow lower, and they instantly realized the mistake they’d made as she leaned in and gently smoothed her hand across Catriona’s jaw. 
“What was that, dear?” Senga crooned, grasping their chin between her fingers and forcing them to look her in the eye. “Speak up. You know I dislike it when you mumble.”
Catriona tried to turn their head away, but Senga’s grip tightened on their jaw, even if her sickly sweet tone didn’t change. 
“Clearly you thought it was important if you felt the urge to contradict me. Speak up.”
They squeezed their eyes shut, forcing the words out even if their heart felt like a caged animal trying to escape their chest for how hard it pounded against their ribs.
“I said Granny is going to take me to Lulia soon.” Catriona blurted out. “She wants to go soon because she doesn’t have another project, so she thought we could spend some time together since Prakra was mostly her field work.”
The tension between them both was so thick that Catriona thought they could feel it pressing down on their shoulders.
“Did she, now?” Senga hummed, a thoughtful look on her face. “She’s always been so insistent she knows what’s best for you. Drives me absolutely batty. Mother and child we may be, but Mama forgets who holds more power in the family. Perhaps some time barred from Kintyre would remind her of that…”
The casual tone with which Senga spoke made the sinking feeling in their belly feel like a whole cliff face dropping into the sea, so quickly it made them queasy in the process.
“You’d really do that to Granny?” Catriona whispered, eyes wide and their horror seeping clearly into their tone as they sat upright. “You’d tell her she can’t come back because of me?”
“If I must. If she won’t respect me as your mother, I’ll have to find a way for her to respect my position as Baroness. Besides, she won’t stay away long.” Senga patted their leg lightly, a gesture far too light to match her words. “Between you, Balfour, and my brother…”
Terror fell over Catriona like a blanket of ice. It was one thing for them to be punished, but for their grandmother, who had only ever acted to try and do good for them...they couldn’t let her take the fall. 
Their grandmother’s whole life was here. She’d been born at Kintyre, like all of her siblings, and been raised here. Her parents, Sorcha and Aonghus, were buried in the family cemetery - like their uncle, Astor, and the honorary headstone for Balfour, whose body had simply never been recovered. Myrna had lost her spouse and her son in such a short few years when they were little, and they knew how dearly she loved her home, how much she needed the places she kept so dear. 
Myrna used to be...so heavy with sorrow, no matter how hard she tried to hide it. Over the years she’d healed, smiles slowly reaching her eyes, and she herself spoke of how much being with her family helped her reach a place of peace. She was always remembering, always loving, even though they were gone, and had become so bright and warm in the way that Catriona knew her despite all she’d endured. 
Catriona didn’t think their grandmother could forgive them if they were the reason she lost her home, too. 
And though it felt like they were making a deal with the devil, Catriona let out a slow breath, words thick in their throat as if they were trying to fight their way back to their belly. 
“If you promise Granny won’t get in trouble…” They said slowly, watching with dread as Senga’s eyes lit up with something they couldn’t name, “...I’ll do what you want. I’ll stay, I’ll stop fighting. I’ll be your heir and I won’t question it. But you have to promise me you’ll leave Granny alone.”
Senga’s lips curled into a smile, not unlike a cat that got the canary, as she pulled Catriona into an embrace. Catriona did not return it, body stiff and hands clenching and relaxing into fists as they tried to figure out what to do with themself.
“Oh, dear, if you’re that concerned, then I can find those terms agreeable.” She leaned back slightly, hands falling to rest on their shoulders and give them a light squeeze. “But I would like my own assurances. You understand, after all, as your little adventure has broken the trust I have in you.”
Senga’s grip tightened slightly, and Catriona flinched, staring up at their mother with the sour taste of fear in their mouth.
“Do not misunderstand this as forgiveness. While I am still upset by your actions, it has not diminished my goodwill. In fairness, it was high time you got to see more than Castle Kintyre, for sheltering you completely will do you no favors when it comes time for you to take your place. But know this…”
Senga leaned in, eyes like blades of ice to Catriona’s wild and wet-eyed panic. 
“You can run as far as you want for now. But when I call for you to come home, you will fly as fast as the winds will carry you, and you will without question or argument. Defy me again, and I will strip you of everything you hold dear. You will lose the Canonach name, all claim to your inheritance, your titles, your family, your home - all of it will be gone. Your grandmother will never be permitted to return to this place, and nor will you. You would do well to remember the privileged position you’re in, because you are nothing without all I have given you, and I can take it away just as easily. Do I make myself clear?”
Catriona let out a shaky breath, nodding slowly as their mother’s grip relaxed on their shoulders. 
“Yes, ma’am.” They whispered, and Senga smiled again, perfectly serene and as if nothing had just transpired between them both.
She gestured for Catriona to lie back, which they did - though stiffly - and went through the motions of tucking them in, something Senga hadn’t done in years by that point in Catriona’s life, eyes fixed on the ceiling even as their mother leaned in and pressed a kiss to their brow. 
“Goodnight, dear.” She murmured, and Catriona remained quiet, watching out of the corner of their eye as Senga made her way to the door with the candle flame flickering in each step.
“She’s your mom.” They whispered eventually, and Senga sighed, turning back to look over her shoulder to look at them again. 
“Sometimes we have to make hard decisions to protect ourselves and those we love.” Senga mused, her hand lowering to fall on the doorknob. “And I am no stranger to them. You will come to find one day that the pain is a necessary evil.”
With that, the door fell shut, plunging Catriona into the darkness once again. 
Sleep would not come. 
The tears would, however, as Catriona turned their face into the soft down of their pillow and began to weep, feeling now more than ever that the walls of the Kintyre Estate were closing in around them.

"The promised land, I think I can meet her there".
This article argues that it's unreasonable to see the line as a romantic gesture from Cloud, and that an alternative interpretation of the line as a comment concerning the impending doom is more likely. __________________________________________________
People try to use this to prove that Cloud wants Aerith ever since 1997. Now lets be clear here, this interpretation is patently absurd as soon as you think about it for more than 2 seconds. Do you really think for a second that Square would end the game with Cloud randomly telling Tifa as they're about to die, "you know what I want to tell you before we die? I don't love you and I'm glad I'm dying so I can be with another woman in the afterlife"? They wouldn't, this is the most unreasonable story interpretation I've ever heard, whatever that line is meant to mean, it wouldn't be that. Let's be clear here, the only people who think that this line is a genuine argument in favor of Clerith, are people who are already Cleriths. They see the line, and find it to be in line with their beliefs, and it is. The problem is that that's not how science is done. The question isn't whether or not a piece of evidence is in line with your point of view, it's whether it disproves the opposite point of view, which in this case it doesn't. (Also see: "The Wittgenstein test") It should be noted that arguments like these do not do Cleriths any favors, because in addition to proving nothing, they show something fundamentally problematic about the Clerith view of the story. In order to believe that this line in incompatible with a Cloti interpretation of the story, there are a number of tangentially related positions that you'd have to defend. 1: It's impossible to want to be reunited with anyone except if you love them romantically. 2: Cloud is an absolute asshole who would dump a woman he just had sex with, just as they're about to die. 3: Tifa is the worlds biggest simp. 4: This is how SE wants you to see their characters. In one fell swoop of a bad story interpretation you've undermined the importance of all other forms of love, you've undermined the importance of Clouds character arc concerning guilt. You've basically trampled on those who suffer from mental health issues by simplifying their issues into love cliches, you've made a villain of Clouds character, made a mockery of Tifas character, and revealed that you don't understand basic storytelling.
This is the fundamental problem with these arguments that cause many of us to develop a distinct distaste for Clerith as a ship, because when Cleriths attempt to argue in favor of it, it often comes in the form insults towards all characters and stories involved. You could have a story about Cloud loving Aerith, but if defending said story requires you to argue that Cloud would leave a girl with two children, one of which is dying, for no other reason besides being lovesick, then that does a disservice to the characters, the story, and the franchise in general. In a sense, by trying to defend Clerith like this you're insulting the entirety of Final Fantasy. Are there people who are assholes? Yes, are there people who get straight up "pumped and dumped"? Yes. Is that the sort of hero that SE is trying to show us? Obviously not. (for more information regarding this I advise you read: Insane hobbits article where he touches on the differences between clean and messy narratives) If SE wanted to end the game with Cloud proclaiming his love to Aerith in some way, they wouldn't have Tifa hanging on his side while he's doing it, and she wouldn't respond with "yeah, lets go meet her" like the universe biggest simp. So what is actually said? Well, I am not a translator, but as far as I can tell Japanese doesn't have pronouns and the line generally refers to meeting people in the promised land, which includes Tifa in the people going, and it's not specifically about Aerith. Is Aerith included? Of course, she's probably even the main person to meet there, she's certainly singled out as the person talked about by certain supplementary materials, but it's not a romantic sentiment, it's a tragic "we're about to die" sentiment, meant to convey a more generally positive message about being "reunited" with those who have died. The more likely paraphrasing for this scene is: "Cloud asks for an answer from the planet, the planet reveals the lifestream, Cloud and Tifa realize they're about to die. Cloud muses that he thinks he gets it now, they're all going to die and be reunited in the lifestream, both with each other, as well as those who have died, with Aerith being the most obvious and recent example." So is there any evidence for this? Well, for one there is the storyboard for the scene:

Cloud: "I'm going home Tifa" Tifa: "What?" Cloud "We had something to do after we got home. We haven't seen the other side of the mountain yet ..." Tifa: "Yeah ... let's go home"
"the other side of the mountain" is a reference to the mountains of Nibleheim, where Tifa believed the dead went. In other words, this is either a reference to them going home because they have stuff to do, which ties into the general idea that Cloud and Co had to live in order for their sins to be forgiven, as is evidenced by:
“I’m going to live. I think that’s the only way I can be forgiven. All sorts of things… happened.” ~Cloud in case of Tifa.
Or more likely it's be a reference to how they're about to die. Neither interpretation says anything about this scene being intended to be a romantic sign towards Aerith. Now, of course, the line was changed, and intentions can change during development. But if we're unsure on what the meaning of a line is, then going back to the storyboard is a pretty good way to get context.

These are not prescriptive canon, but descriptively they can give us some indication of how we're supposed to interpret the line.

Also reinforces the idea that the final line is meant as a more inclusive statement concerning reunions after death. Taking these points into consideration it becomes unreasonable to take the "I think I can meet her there" as a shipping line between Cloud and Aerith. If it were:
SE wouldn't have hung Tifa from Clouds hips.
Wouldn't have had Tifa agree with the idea.
Wouldn't have done it as the two were about to die.
Wouldn't have the storyboard refer to a shared journey beyond the mountains.
And most importantly, SE wouldn't have followed it up with Cloud commenting moments later that he's going to live in order to atone for his sins, and that things would be different now that he has Tifa. Clearly meeting again in the afterlife was more of an immediate danger rather than an immediate goal:
As Tifa looked away from the sky towards the ground, she was fearful of the future. However, Cloud beside her chose to smile gently. It was a smile that she hadn’t seen before during their journey. Cloud noticed her gaze and asked, “What’s wrong?” “Cloud, you’re smiling.” “I am?” “Yeah.” “It all starts now. A new…” Cloud looked for the right words. “A new life.” “I’m going to live. I think that’s the only way I can be forgiven. All sorts of things… happened.” “That’s right…” “But when I think about how many times I’ve thought about how I was going to start a new life, it’s funny.” “Why?” “Because I’ve always failed everything.” “That’s not funny.” “After this … I think I’ll be okay.” Cloud was silent for a long time before he spoke again. “Because I have you this time.” “You’ve always had me.” “What I mean is kind of different,” Cloud answered with another smile. -Case of Tifa; revised; released with ACC.

I thought I’d do 20 weekly posts, each with a different theme, and ask for your help! There are a ton of great Muskie fics out there, let’s help each other discover them.

E: yeah, you got me by cherryfeather - modern au graduation party oone-shot with a game of spin the bottle that gets angsty with forthcoming farewells and then very fulfilling indeed.
T: Chapter 10 of the collection of unrelated shorts (very short) His Smile Me Draws, His Frown Drives Me Away by akathecentimetre is entitled  In Goodly Colors Gloriously Arrayed and is a modern au where the lads are working for the Sûreté in Paris (though it’s never confirmed precisely as what) and it’s basically a series of three (the original Inseparables) character studies as they get used to being Responsible Adults. No filth... well, apart from Aramis’s feet...
G: Fancy is a very short modern au short by AnathemaDevice about the cats owned by (or owning) the various season three characters. Includes one of the most beautiful word-sketches of Sylvie I’ve yet read.
E: Mis Adventures by Doom Canary is an utterly filthy, modern British police au short featuring a trans male character that blew my mind in the best ways. If there’s a plot, I blinked and missed it.
T: born like a vapor by mellyflori is - and I can’t believe I’m typing this - a modern au where two of the Four are genies (yep, you read that correctly). It is utterly, unforgettably gorgeous, and just works. Angsty and charming, and has one of the most elegant solutions I’ve seen for “what happens with Constance?” The world-building is done so well it’s almost seamless, and I’m weak for that kind of thing.
T: Brand New Start is a short modern office au by potentiality_26 from Constance’s perspective and is melancholy, sweet, and vivid. OT3 but nothing graphic.
E: One in Ten Thousand by breathtaken is a novel-length modern soul bonds au that, as usual with her, subverts the trope and delves deep into the psyche of an intensely depressed Athos who was in no way prepared to meet his soulmate. It’s hard going at times, but utterly beautiful and very hot.
M: my heart upon my sleeve by cherryfeather is a novel-length modern Shakespearean actors au and I avoided it for ages because the synopsis was written in a deliberately tabloid style and I assumed the whole thing was like that. It is not - it is the most elegant, eloquent, literally tear-tugging bit of angst and mutual pining I’ve ever encountered, and takes in: hurt/comfort, Only One Bed, and friends-to-lovers tropes along the way. Basically, if they were a character in the first two seasons of the original, she finds a place for them in this gorgeous work.
E: The Humbling River (author unknown) is the only A/B/O fic that I will ever recommend, ever. This short is canon era, but I guess it still counts as au? I fell into it accidentally, but it was written so well that I didn’t care about the premise.
E: Une histoire de bleu by ceeturnalia is long. A 100k word modern day au where the lads are security specialists for a private firm in Paris. It is vividly stark and lushly compassionate in one go, and also explores a developing D/s relationship in great detail, so if that’s not your bag, that’s the main core of the story. And it’s handled so well that I have zero hesitation in recommending it, even though that in itself is not really my thing. It’s just so very, very good and, even at that length, still manages to be very tightly written.
M: Death in Waiting by Suzie_shooter is your actual 1920s country house murder mystery with all our favs (seasons 1 and 2 anyway) in a short-novel-length interbellum piece of Upstairs-Downstairs only of course there’s lots of forbidden sex all over the place, and a genuinely gasp-inducing (at least in me) set of reveals.
M: Still Waters by evilmaniclaugh is a modern office au with a twist. It’s porn with a plot (and a great deal of angst), and is startlingly hilarious in places (for good reasons, I promise).
M: Gentlemen of the Road by Suzie_shooter is a highwayman au set, from my vague enough understanding of the descriptions, about 100 years or so after the canon era. As usual for S_s, it’s Athos/Porthos pairing, from the perspective of Porthos, and I keep coming back to it, for the humour, the story, and the sex. Bonus points for Ninon and Rochefort showing up, and our brief glimpses of d’Artagnan being an utter little shit.
M: Mise en place by breathtaken is a short series featuring season 3 characters as chefs. And it’s stunningly beautiful, intimately told from a conflicted Constance’s perspective (something I’m utterly weak for) and I want there to be more because dammit - food and polyamory and found family and so many of my favourite things and I wish she was going to write more and aaaaah. Anyway, everyone is bi and kinky and I am so there for that...
I have so many of these, but I’m going to leave it here while I retain any shred of sanity or dignity, and finish by telling you about my own only (so far) modern au, entitled Summoned (rated M), set in modern-day Cambridge, UK, complete with references to Brexit and climate change, and a detailed depiction of the Fitzwilliam Museum. The MacGuffin is a museum anti-heist. Or is it reincarnation? Or music? Or synaesthesia? WHO KNOWS?! Anyway, it’s 75k+ words of conversations, misunderstandings, music, musings, museum architecture, poetry, stolen kisses, awkward flirting, and confusing flashbacks. There is one extended explicit sex scene and the rest is more along the lines of innuendo and a great deal of heated kissing. And I wrote it in about fives weeks and am rather proud of it, actually.

@rapturcd - Where to start to describe a friend? Nox is a close online friend whom I’ve had the pleasure of following for the last few years now. We’ve been able to keep up with each other from blog to blog, and continued to do so when she revived this blog right here, a Bioshock oc. I’ll admit that when I saw her move here, I had no clue what the hell Bioshock was other than some video game. I’ve been graced with so many exciting details, passion has been poured into every message and post she makes upon the dash, it instantly made me a fan of this little franchise. Though the Bioshock rpc is small, Nox has found a way to make it her own. Her blog is filled with so much helpful information, and one look at her extremely well thought out, and detailed OC page will tell you all you need to know about this vast universe. With every OC she makes, it’s done with love and care, but something about Nicholas is truly special. Aside from being from one of the most interesting and unique fandoms, Nicholas was crafted with more detail than the gods could give any living being. Nox is also a plot driven writer, I know I am too so if that’s your thing, you’ll be glad to know not only is she a peach but she’s very fun to bounce ideas with! She helped me learn so much about Bioshock, it made plotting feel effortless and an overall thrill. If you don’t follow her, not only are you missing out, but I’ll personally be offended on her behalf.
@segadore - It’s been a few years now, and I have not been able to get Fawn off of my tail, damn you— I’M KIDDING, no but really, Fawn and I have been buddies for the last few years, and I started following her on her Steve Harrington blog. I’ve already gushed in the past about how much I love her Steve, so in the same way she’s so kindly embraced my OCs, I’d like to do the same with hers. Let’s start off with this: Fawn is the one person I see constantly and without a second thought embracing all writers, you could write an oc, canon muse from a different fandom, female oc, doesn’t matter– she will love them like her own. You speak with Fawn ooc, and you’ll feel at home, you’re never a bore nor bother. They’re one of the few people in this RPC I feel so genuinely safe around, and they make me feel like a valued writer even when I’m being ignored by others on the dash, I feel important, and it’s thanks to them. Fawn writes a very amazing muse named Mykah, from what can only be described as a non-existent fandom. I learned about Dead Like Me through her, and I’ve since been completely hooked on this concept and universe. Mykah is a very special, and well-thought out muse. He’s a soul collecting reaper from California, and he’s got so much wit, charm, and attitude, how could you not love the guy? He’s got a tough exterior, but he’s so funny as well, you can tell when you’re reading something Fawn wrote, they have such a unique tone, your eyes will be glued to the screen instantly as soon as you see a reply in your inbox. From the bottom of my heart, I hope we continue to write for years to come. If you want some fresh content you’ve never seen before, and perhaps one of the kindest friends, with the most goddamn creative mindset, please, go look at Fawn’s content. For the love of GOD go look.
@wyntered​ - You know how when your favorite musician or celebrity makes a post on Instagram or twitter, you go “Ah! There’s _____ again, classic ol’ _____, love them.” and you get all giddy in your seat, overwhelmed just by their presence even if it isn’t for you? That’s how I feel everytime I read each and everyone of Chantelle’s posts. I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t get to read all of my rp partners replies to other folks, sometimes I’m too busy, or honestly? I don’t feel like it. But the amount of effort and research they’ve put into this, how could I not? I love reading both her replies to myself and other people, I love reading her meta posts and headcanons, because I know it’ll not only be helpful but just wonderful. It’s also so nice to see how much care she’s put into writing such a complicated man like Bucky Barnes, her portrayal is uniquely her own, and she’s truly made sure to set a realistic example for others. I’ve learned so much, and it’s thanks to her. They’ve also been so gracious in writing with my own Marvel OC, Alice, and never act annoyed or bothered. That’s not something you often find with people who write popular canon muses, but it’s something I’ve been lucky enough to find with Chantelle. Do yourself a favor, buckle up, and get excited. Go and give her a follow, because I just know in my heart she’ll be more than happy to embrace you with open arms. Thanks for giving me the most iconic and kickass friendship for my daughter! It’s probably obvious to y’all by now that I love Chantelle’s work, so you know this message is genuine.
@capnsolo - I found out a few weeks ago that Kayla and I have been mutuals for years, and neither of us knew it. We’ll ignore that for now. I know Kayla as the most fantabulous Han Solo mun on the block, no really, she’s amazing. We found each other again because I writer princess Leia ( over on @/hopescorned ) and well… SCOUNDRESS! Together, we’ve managed to create our own little version of canon to their storyline, and we continue to develop it each time we speak. I’m not very good at articulating my thoughts, but my point is, Kayla is a very skilled, and creative woman. She’s smart, she knows how to use canon as a crutch, but doesn’t rely on it. She let’s her brain do the talking, and she knows how to collaborate well with others, and happens to be very open minded and flexible to other people’s muses. No matter how outlandish the idea might be for a story, Kayla will find a way to work with it. I’ve never seen someone capture Han’s tone so well, each time I read one of her replies, I can truly see and hear Harrison Ford acting each of the stories we create, out in my head. She has a way with her words, and she’s a true talent. Please, even if Star Wars isn’t your think, at least give her work a chance, it’ll be a pleasant surprise.
@nostlgic - Ash & I have been writing together since February, and the day we started speaking, they were one of the kindest souls I’ve been graced with speaking to. A passionate writer, you’ll be pleasured to see that their muse list is rather long, and diverse. Ash is the kind of writer that is always up for the challenge. You have an OC no one is interested? Cool, Ash is now interested in writing with them. You have a crazy rp idea you want to pursue? Ash is the first in line to give it a try. Whenever I write with Ash, I know it’s going to be a new and exciting adventure, each story is different from the next, and with each muse, they shift tones effortlessly; Stephen King would envy them. I made a post probably a month or two ago about how I wanted to write with an Edward Scissorhands, and within approximately 10 seconds, they volunteered to add him to her muse roster, and a mutual friend of ours even went to comment “I was going to tag Ash but it seems she’s already here” and why is that? That’s just the kind of person Ash is, and I truly love it. Go and peep her profile, because I can guarantee there’s at least one muse you’ll want to write with.

Graduation || Kylo Ren x Reader

A/N: Based on an anonymous request - 'Hi can I get a Kylo Ren request where reader is from earth and studying in college and it’s her graduation soon so Kylo surprises her by showing up at her ceremony when they’ve been in a sort of long distance relationship and Kylo has told her many times he doesn’t see the need for her to have such qualifications when she’s to be empress but nevertheless he’s proud?? Thank you!!! :-)' - I presumed that college is the same as university in the UK and I ashamedly had to google if college is the same as university which it seems to be, so imma roll with that - reader is in early 20s.
Sorry if this isn’t what you pictured anon - this was the only way I could think of making this request work! So, as Earth itself is not a planet in the Star Wars universe, I've twisted things so it is - and the First Order was a terrible organisation, but under Kylo’s leadership has grown to be a more peaceful organisation. Also, wasn’t specified but I picture Earth to be a lot more futuristic, (kind of like Star Trek in the Chris Pine edition - a lot more technologically advanced, as Star Wars has a lot of advanced technology). A bit different to canon Star Wars, but I couldn’t see how the reader would be with Kylo when he’s as destructive as he is in Star Wars, especially when she’s a college student on Earth.

“Hey Kylo!” You grinned as you answered a call on your data-pad, and Kylo’s face came into view, blurry for a moment as the video quality settled. You adjusted the camera as you pulled out various sheets of paper from your bag, as well as a few textbooks so that you could study and complete assignments while talking to Kylo. “How was your day?” You asked as you got started on your work.
“It was relatively dull, as usual.” Kylo said smoothly, dark eyes fixated on you fondly as you flicked through your textbooks to help with your assignment. “You know my usual routine - track down those who rebel against us, et cetera.” He mused, and you smiled as you worked. “How was yours?”
“Oh...busy, as usual.” You quoted him distractedly, jotting down notes on the subject you were currently studying for. “I had two different lectures today, and then I was doing work at lunch so it was a pretty full day for me.” You smiled tiredly at him through the screen. “So I’m a bit tired. I don’t have any lectures tomorrow, but I do have a shift at the campus cafe, so it’ll be another relatively busy day tomorrow as well.” You rubbed a hand over your face, trying to hide a yawn from Kylo.
“You know, once you become empress, you won’t need such qualifications.” Kylo spoke, leaning back in his chair resting his head in one hand. “It displeases me to see you so stressed and tired, when soon you’ll be living a life of luxury.” Even though his tone was disapproving and concerned, his low, calm voice always managed to soothe you. 
“I know, Kylo, you’ve told me that many times since we started dating.” You laughed lightly, grinning at him, brushing some of your hair out of your eyes. “But you forget that before we met, I had a normal life, with relatively normal expectations.” You said, beginning to write your assignment. “I mean, I definitely had more opportunities than others considering that my parents are well known, but if they weren’t, I wouldn’t have met you!” You smiled as you spoke, not looking up from your work. “My parents wanted me to get these qualifications so that I could get a job, but that was before I met you,” You paused, eyes trailing over your notes. Your parents also wanted you to have a backup plan in case things turned sour between you and Kylo and you needed to support yourself, but you weren’t going to tell him that. They were just looking out for you. “And you know that I enjoy studying at college, being busy and working hard; it’s satisfying seeing hard work pay off.” You reminded him. 
“We live such different lives.” Kylo murmured, reaching forwards to grab another data-pad, and started to type on the screen, presumably responding to a message to do with his job. “We both have busy days, yet I do worry for you sometimes.” You looked up at that, only to meet his gaze through the screen. “You seem tired every time we talk - I don’t want you to get overwhelmed with your work, Y/N.” You put down your pen, and rested your chin on your hands, waiting for him to continue. “And I have...bad news. It’s the reason I wanted to talk to you tonight.”
You knew what this was going to be about. Your graduation. You didn’t mind it if Kylo couldn’t make it; you knew that he was incredibly busy, and considering your relationship was mostly long distance, you knew he’d be working far away. You gestured for him to continue. 
“I’m afraid that I am unable to make it to you graduation ceremony.” He spoke slowly, and you could hear the guilt in his voice and see it on his face. “I have tried everything I can to make it there, but it clashes with something that must be done out here.” He ran a hand through his hair. “I’m really sorry, sweetheart. You know that I’d much rather be there with you-”
"Ben."  You interrupted, wanting nothing more than to hold his hand at that moment. “It’s okay. I knew there was a very small chance of you being able to make it.” You smiled encouragingly. “I admit I am a bit sad that you can’t come, but I’m not mad or devastated. You have a really busy and important job, and I don’t blame you at all.” You weren’t lying. You’d made sure throughout your relationship that the two of you were always honest with each other, and if there was a problem, the two of you would talk it out over a call, sometimes lasting for hours. The last thing you wanted was for your relationship to crumble as a result of your distance. Kylo let one of his rare smiles slip onto his face as you spoke, and resumed a more relaxed position in his chair.
“I...thank you for understanding.” Kylo replied once you had finished talking. “You...know that I love you, and I would never do anything to purposely hurt you.” 
“I know.” You said gently, and after a few moments of silence, you changed the topic of conversation to something more cheerful, as you carried on with your assignments, with Kylo occasionally answering messages on his data-pad from people he worked with.

Once you’d finished the call, you sighed, running a hand through your hair, and reflected on how your relationship had grown since you first met. 
The two of you met about four years ago, at one of the many conferences your parents were invited to. Even though you’d been to plenty of conferences before, your parents had reminded you time and time again, that this time the Solo family would be in attendance - your parents didn’t work for Han Solo and Leia Organa, but they were still regarded very highly amongst most people.  
You knew when they entered, as everyone turned to the doorway, and grew silent for a brief moment of awe and general respect - Leia Organa, especially, was a force to be reckoned with, and earned all the respect people gave her. As you peered around your parents, you saw them enter, and then a boy, around your age, maybe a few years older, enter behind them. That must be their son, you thought to yourself as you watched him mingle in the crowd, not talking much to anyone, simply giving formal greeting when needing to.
When Ben Solo was born, Leia and Han wanted their child’s name to remain private until he wished to reveal it to the public. Instead, he had chosen the name Kylo Ren, so that he could still be identified by appearance but wanted to keep his real name hidden and kept private. The family had fallen into a lot of controversy a few years ago; Kylo Ren had joined the First Order - an incredibly dangerous organisation that defied many of the beliefs and practises that Leia and Han preached. However, these beliefs must have greatly influenced Kylo, as after the previous leader, Snoke and unfortunately (and mysteriously) died, Kylo was in a powerful enough position to guide the First Order into a less violent rule, and he had been greatly credited for it.
Anyway, you’d been awkwardly wandering around the room, as you weren’t one for social interaction with complete strangers who were also mostly adults, and you just happened to bump into Kylo Ren himself, and there was the awkward:  ‘Oh, sorry, I didn’t see you there,’ and ‘No, no, I wasn’t watching where I was going’ interaction, and maybe it was the fact that you two were the closest in age of any other guests, but the awkward meeting turned into a slightly less awkward introduction, and before you knew it the two of you had been talking for most of the event. You’d been in awe of him the whole time you were talking - you were nobody compared to him, and it helped that he was incredibly attractive, and surprisingly easy to talk to, despite how quiet he originally seemed. Something just clicked when you spoke - at first your conversations had been topical and less personal, but the longer you spoke the more you wanted to know about Kylo, and he was surprisingly funny, cracking a few jokes here and there, making you laugh more often than not.
The two of you kept in contact after the first meeting - your parents and Kylo’s parents had noticed the two of you talking in a corner of the room, and your parents had gladly introduced themselves to the Solo’s, (they’d been admirers for years, while you had never taken too much interest until you met Kylo.) and encouraged you to keep in touch with Kylo. At first it was probably because it was the Solo family, but after a while, talking to Kylo nearly everyday despite the distance you grew a lot happier, and even though you were glued to whatever screen you were using to communicate your parents were happy if you were happy.
After a few months of being friends, the two of you started to feel differently towards each other, and there was a while where the idea of calling him caused butterflies to squirm around in your stomach. Eventually you did confess your feelings towards him, surprising the both of you as it wasn’t like you to be that bold, but you didn’t start dating until a year later, (your parents didn’t want you dating until you were 18, coincidentally just when you had started college.) and it was then that Kylo realised he could trust you enough
So, the two of you have been together ever since, and it hadn’t been perfect. Long distance wasn’t easy in any way, and was extremely frustrating at times, but Kylo was so special to you that you really didn’t want to let him go; so the two of you have been making it work for almost four years, and neither of you had any intention of breaking it off anytime soon.

The time had come; you’d written all the exams that needed to be written, had probably more than your fair share of stressing sessions over calls with Kylo, and it was finally your graduation day. You were incredibly relieved to be graduation, a little sad to leave all the good memories behind, but mostly relieved. And there was the fact that Kylo wouldn’t be attending the ceremony, which dimmed your smile significantly every time you thought about it.
As you and your classmates were all lining up to receive your certificate and accept your qualifications, you caught sight of your parents waving at you to gain your attention, and you smiled and waved back, blowing them a kiss.
“You okay?” You turned around, to see one of your best friends, Amelia, looking at you with concern laced in her expression. “Boyfriend troubles?” She asked sympathetically.
“Not really,” You sighed. “He couldn’t make it today, and I don’t blame him at all; but I just miss him. We’ve been doing a long-distance thing for about four years now, and today would have been a really good day to see him.” Your smile drooped slightly at the thought. “But apart from that, not much else is wrong. We’re graduating!” You threw an arm around her shoulder. “We should be celebrating, not talking about my relationship.”
“If you’re sure.” Amelia chuckled at your actions. “We should go out for drinks tomorrow or something - I have plans with my family tonight to celebrate.” She indicated to where her family was sitting, giving them a small wave as they waved frantically at her.
“Me too - my parents are taking me out to dinner.” Your smile widened at that. You’d missed spending quality time with your parents where you weren’t stressed out of your mind, so you were really looking forward to dinner. 
The two of you exchanged small talk as the line to the stage grew smaller and smaller, until it was your turn to step onto the stage. Amelia gave you a little nudge forwards, and you took a deep breath before ascending the steps, exhaling to calm yourself. As you reached the head of your college, who greeted you with a smile, you glanced out into the crowd to see your parents, but something in the very edge of your peripheral made you look further, into the far corner of the crowd, where some family members were standing, as far more people had attended the ceremony than your college had anticipated. You inhaled sharply, and it took everything in you not to trip over your gown.
Everything seemed to move in slow motion. There, standing at the back of the crowd, dressed in an immaculate, and very formal black suit, stood Kylo. You beamed at him, feeling happy tears spring to your eyes, and the world went back to normal speed, as you accepted your diploma, had your picture taken and shook your Headmaster’s hand gratefully, and hurried down the steps to hug your parents. 
Once they’d finished hugging you and pressing excessive amounts of kisses all over your cheeks, you left your diploma with them, and quickly and excitedly made your way over to Kylo. When you’d made it through the majority of the crowd, you broke into a run, letting out a laugh. Kylo grinned at you; one of the rare, truly happy grins, and opened his arms as you ran towards him. As you reached him, he swept you up into his arms, hugging you tightly as you clung to him like a human hermit. 
“What are you doing here?” You asked joyfully, gazing at him adoringly as he finally put you down. “And when did you get here? How are you here, I thought you had an important meeting or something?” You chatted away, reaching up on your tiptoes to press a kiss to his cheek.
“Luckily for me, and for you, the officer in charge of the meeting fell ill last night, so the meeting was cancelled. I got here as soon as I could.” He smiled down at you, pressing a kiss to your forehead in turn. “I couldn’t miss your graduation, sweetheart.” He murmured, and it made you wanted to melt into a puddle. He leaned down, kissing you softly, and you couldn’t help but smile as he kissed you. Eventually, he pulled away, gazing fondly at you. “I’m so proud of you, Y/N.” Your cheeks hurt from how hard you were smiling, and you were surprised you hadn’t cried from happiness. 
“Come on,” You clasped his hand tightly, swinging it between the two of you. “Let’s go see my parents and get dinner, I’m starving.” You tugged on his arm lightly, and pulled him along to greet your parents.

Background: Ethan was a typical midwestern kid growing up, and he always loved building things. despite his string of mind-numbingly boring jobs at places like Home Depot, Ethan was on his way to becoming a electrical and robotics engineer. He made it all the way to his senior year of college at age 22, but then dropped out without completing his senior research project or graduating. This was because of an incident that resulted in the death of a friend and his girlfriend at the time. Ethan and two friends, Patrick and Greg, and his girlfriend, Lydia, all of whom were students at the same university, decided to all work on one research project together, using space in the basement of one of the university buildings to set up their laboratory. Their disciplines spanned engineering, psychology, religious studies, and history.
Their hypothesis was simple: all paranormal events that cannot be explained by science are manifestations of the human mind. In other words, things like ghosts and demons exist because people believe they’re real. Once you believe, you can be affected by them. By using a trigger object (an object used in paranormal investigations to invite the energy of a spirit or entity, usually something from their life or visually representative of something the energy would be attracted to) and an electrical field designed to help focus all their brain waves on the trigger object, the four of them focused on a statue used in a similar experiment previously years ago and attempted to create an entity with their minds. At the time, they believed they were successful, because something did show up. It killed Greg and pulled Lydia into a nearby wall, never to be seen again. Ethan freaked out, quit school, and moved back home.
Two years later found Ethan moving into a new house with his then girlfriend Kelly. Everything was fine at first, but then strange things began to happen. The neighbor’s dog walked into their house and died. Things were moved around in the house. And odd occurrences like clothing being tied up in knots and objects being fused together began to happen. Around this time, Patrick reached out to Ethan, telling him that for the past two years, he’s been living in a Faraday Cage of sorts, a metal electrified cage that emits certain frequencies. This was apparently the only way he could stave off and survive the entity they “created” with their experience two years prior. The entity was captured during the experiment, and Patrick tried to get rid of it, to send it back where it came. Unfortunately, the opposite was done and the creature was set free. Not only were they completely misunderstood as to what the entity was, but it was far more intelligent than was previously thought. It also is angry that it was held captive and is systematically going after everyone involved with the experiment as well as their loved ones. Patrick contacted Ethan to warn him but also to ask for help in trying to destroy the creature again.
Long story short, it was a disaster. Patrick and Ethan set up another lab with Kelly’s help, and thy successfully purged the house of the creature... except for the garage. It hid in the largely metal-encased garage and was unaffected by the frequency-emitters employed during the purge attempt. Not realizing the entity still lived, the three let their guard down, and soon Patrick was killed, dragged into a dark room and never seen again, and Kelly was also killed, pulled partially into a wall and left there by the entity to die. Ethan assumed the entity would come after him next, however, with him being the last one left alive that had any part in the experiment that pulled it out of its own dimension and imprisoned it, the entity has decided instead to slowly torture Ethan. It hounds his sleep and doesn’t allow him much REM sleep, it manifests in frightening ways that give him nightmares, and it attacks and kills anyone who tries to help him or get close to him. Ethan travels with a cage similar to that which Patrick survived in for two years that he can put together in a short amount of time to protect him while he sleeps. Otherwise, he just stays on the road, working online because he’s not able to hold a normal job.
About the Entity or “Apparition”: This creature is not something that was produced by the minds of the college students in that original experiment. It is actually an inter-dimensional creature, basically an as-of-yet undescribed species/lifeform that exists in a dimension parallel to ours. The combination of mental energy and EMF (electro-magnetic frequencies) utilized during the experiment created a rift that let the creature come through. The attempt to send it back, left this rift open, and now the creature can enter our world and pull others into its world. It’s highly intelligent and methodical in its study of humans and the human world. It is curious about tangible life, for it is mostly an incorporeal being. I say mostly because it can manifest as a solid being for a time, and it does so partially to try and understand our anatomy but partially also to scare us and test our willpower, fears, and emotional endurance.
Because it does not fully understand humans and our world, its manifestations are often frighteningly grotesque (if you’ve seen any of the movies of The Thing, it’s kindof like that). It will try to look like a human, but the limbs are bent in weird ways, the head is on backward, the eyes are missing, things like that. So it’s trying to mimic and doing a poor job. Also, it likes to “play” with the human world, so an indication of its presence is the manipulation of solid objects such that they are changed on a molecular level. So... finding your flat screen TV suddenly embedded halfway into the wall as if it had always been a part of that wall. Having the wooden spokes of a staircase be curled in all different directions as if the wood had always been curved. Seeing chairs all melded together as if they’d always been that way. Those are all exampled of the entity playing with our environment in an attempt to better understand it.
In addition to not being able to cross certain EMF fields, the creature is also averse to bright light. It will avoid stepping into it directly and will become agitated if light is shined on it, such as with a flashlight or spotlight. It also does not like being filmed and will attack anyone with a camera or a phone pointed at it. It kills in two different ways. Either it grabs you and pulls you into its dimension, which either kills you once you get there or you get stuck halfway along the way and are killed by whatever solid object your body merges with, or it kills you simply with its residue. The creature leaves behind a black, bubbling, nodular substance or stain that is poisonous to living beings of our plane.

Potential Starter Ideas:
Your muse could meet Ethan and think he’s completely batshit crazy, heh. The entity has a habit of backing off for long enough periods of time to make it seem like he’s crazy. It seems to take some pleasure in this.
Your muse could offer to help him try and get rid of the entity, whether your muse is skilled with parapsychology or engineering, or even has magical abilities. Maybe your muse has connections to high-ranking/high-powered/cutting edge technology agencies that might be able to help sever the attachment between him and the entity or maybe even capture, kill, or send it back to its own dimension.
Since I write in the Marvel fandom, I welcome any and all magic user muses or SHIELD agents or anyone else who thinks they can help my rather hopeless and sleepy boi, heh.
Fun facts: 
Despite the very much not-funny reasons why Ethan is incredibly sleep deprived, the fact that he is often makes him turn to humor to lighten situations. He makes the worst jokes when he meets someone, trying to make the best of a crappy situation.
Ethan finished his degrees online, and now has a duel Masters in Electrical Engineering and Materials Science.
He’s gotten to the point where he can have short conversations with the entity in which it appears to understand him or at least be paying attention to what he’s saying. However, such encounters usually end in the entity becoming enraged and frightening him in some way with an upsetting manifestation, sometimes involving faces that look like either Lydia and Kelly.

HOMESPORK ACT 5 ACT 1: Mobius Double Plusungood, Part 3

CHEL: We get some implications of the part of troll culture we ended on last time when a slightly baffled-looking Nepeta, watching through the viewport, updates her SHIPPING WALL. Instead of hearts, some of the hypothetical pairings she’s painted are marked with diamonds. What this means will be explained shortly.

I can’t help but feel it’s slightly creepy to hypothetically matchmake your own friends, but I’m pretty sure the other trolls know at least that the shipping wall exists if not exactly which ships they’re in, and they do live in a society in which it’s stated later that mating is mandatory, so it would indeed be helpful to have at least emergency-doable matchmaking done well in advance and they might appreciate the help.
I’d like to take a moment to note a ship at the bottom row, left of centre; GA/Tavros. Hussie, on his Formspring, later said that GA was “obviously” a lesbian, or anyway was only interested in women, which doesn’t have a specific term for it in troll culture. It’s actually hard to tell going by what’s shown in canon, because she only displays specific interest in girls except for in a complicated case we’ll discuss later, but trolls are supposed to be bi-normative, plus it’s not like the male selection here is particularly inspiring, so, yeah, the evidence we actually see isn't conclusively "obvious". The fandom, knowing this, systematically harass anyone who even muses vaguely about the possibility of shipping her with a boy, even if they don't know about that Word of God. This is why I’m wondering whether the trolls knew about the shipping wall, because if they did, we can presume GA didn’t care. For the record, I’m sex-repulsed ace and have in fact written about.my own imaginary persona fucking (admittedly fucking an opposite sex clone of herself, it was a complicated injoke) and my reaction to someone else writing it would depend on context and reason, so I can imagine her reacting similarly, but not everyone would. A similar thing with a canonically gay male character explicitly on-screen not caring about hypothetical shipping of himself with girls comes up much later; he’s not a troll, but his upbringing was troll-influenced (long story).
BRIGHT: Harassing people over the ships they make content for always baffles me. It’s not like fanart/fanfic for a ship which contradicts canon has any effect on the canon, and playing around with character dynamics (often in a pornographic manner) is a major part of fanfic.
CHEL: On top of all this, gender and sexuality are really shaky concepts to even try to apply to a species which reproduces hermaphroditically. On this side of the fourth wall it’s obviously because Hussie is a not-very-reflective cisgender heterosexual man, and didn’t think about it any further than “girls wear skirts, right?” Plenty of people fanwank up possibilities for how it could happen on the other side. I think we may have to make a “What The Fuck Is Alternian Biology And Sociology” post or two separate from the sporking at the very end.
Discourse discussion over! Next page, we see some of the relevant terminology used in troll culture, though we still don’t get any explanation of what any of the words actually mean, which is a tad annoying for new readers. The context is a discussion between Karkat and Vriska about getting her into the game.
BRIGHT: Specifically, Karkat wants Vriska to get Tavros into the game, leading to this exchange…
CG: WHY DO YOU EVEN HATE HIM, IT'S FUCKING RIDICULOUS. CG: IF ANYTHING YOU SHOULD PITY HIM. CG: ESPECIALLY SINCE YOU WERE THE ONE WHO PARALYZED HIM. AG: I know. I don't really understand it. AG: It's just a really special kind of h8! It never goes away and it doesn't make a lot of sense. CG: THIS IS KIND OF A WEIRD TIME TO BE CONFIDING IN ME ABOUT YOUR FEELINGS OF BLACK ROMANCE BUT OK. AG: Oh god, what? CG: I MEAN IF YOU'RE REALLY IMPLYING TAVROS IS YOUR KISMESIS I THINK YOU'RE BRAYING UP THE WRONG FROND NUB. CG: BOTH PARTIES HAVE TO HATE EACH OTHER EQUALLY, I MEAN LIKE TRUE HATE. Finally, our long-awaited introduction to troll romance!
And the introduction is an effective one. We now know that there’s something called ‘black romance’, that it concerns hate, and that one’s black-romantic partner is a ‘kismesis’. The conversation also flows naturally and fits the characters having it, rather than being an awkward as-you-know infodump, although brace yourselves, there’s one of those coming up. Thirteen is about right for kids starting to have romantic feelings and being confused about it, not wanting to talk about it is pretty normal, and Karkat lecturing people at a good opportunity is absolutely in character.
Karkat goes on to lecture Vriska about the emotions involved in different sorts of romantic relationships, and wow, it really says a lot about troll culture…
CG: OK, MOST PEOPLE WHO HAVEN'T HAD THEIR LOBE STEM CAUTERIZED ARE CAPABLE OF FEELING THE TWO PRIMARY EMOTIONS, HATE AND PITY. CG: PITY IS OF COURSE JUST THE TONED DOWN VERSION OF THE CENTRAL EMOTION, HATE. CG: AND ALL THE NUANCES OF PITY MANIFEST AS VARIOUS OTHER KINDS OF FEELINGS LIKE WHATEVER CHEMICAL REACTIONS TRIGGER MATING FONDNESS OR THE MYSTERIOUS FORCES THAT ARE BEHIND MOIRALLEGIANCE.
CHEL: It’s never really clear if this is just Karkat’s idea of it or if this is how trolls actually work biologically. Trolls do use the word “love” later on, so I always interpreted it as “pity” being a euphemistic term because “love” in such a warlike and oppressive culture could be exploited as a weakness. Fandom has played it with their love actually being based on a weird form of sympathy/seeing the other as needing protection, which is also plausible.
FAILURE ARTIST: I have played with the pity thing before but in retrospect Karkat is the only one who seems to see it that way. Maybe this is all his fake deep teenager view of romance.
BRIGHT: Vriska makes a performance of how bored she is, but Karkat’s on a roll.
CG: A WELL BALANCED PERSON IS IS GOING TO HAVE A GOOD DISTRIBUTION BETWEEN HATE AND THE VARIOUS PITY HUMORS. CG: HAVING A GOOD BALANCE KEEPS ALL THE EMOTIONS SHARPER, SEE I THINK THAT'S YOUR PROBLEM. So now we have ‘kismesis’, ‘moirail’, and ‘matesprit’ as terms for romantic partners, as well as the concepts of black romance, red romance, and ‘moirallegiance’ as the relationship one has with a moirail. Troll romance is not going to get any less confusing for a while.
If Karkat’s grasp of psychology strikes you as amateurish, there’s a reason for that: He gets all his knowledge from romance movies.
AG: Hey asshole, stop watching movies for girls.
I think that’s another strike against the ‘girls are the dangerous ones on Alternia’ argument. Romance movies, per this exchange, are both female-coded and seen as inferior -- Karkat defends his viewing choices by saying they’re INTRIGUING SOCIOLOGICALLY, but Vriska isn’t buying it.

CHEL: I’m not sure an interest in the workings of romance should be a socially gendered thing in a society where, as it turns out, you have to have an acceptable romantic partner by a certain time or die. You’d think most kids would be trying as hard as they could to learn and put into practice everything they could about it, and you’d also think there’d be better information for them than romcoms.
BRIGHT: Has the mate-or-die part come up yet? I’m not sure when Hussie thought of it.
CHEL: I don’t know if he’d thought of it yet, but it does come up very soon.
BRIGHT: Karkat then moves on to the original reason he contacted Vriska -- he needs her and her mind powers in the game, because he’s just run into a double agent called Jack.
Over on the next panel, Karkat is still talking to Vriska, but he’s glancing back over his shoulder at Jack Noir. His hand is covered in blood, which keeps cycling through a range of colours. The blood, it transpires, is because Jack stabbed him. Karkat is amazingly calm about this.
CG: HE'S COOL, IT'S FINE I DON'T REALLY MIND THE STABBING, IT WAS ALL A MISUNDERSTANDING. CG: WELL OK I'M PRETTY SURE HE MEANT TO STAB ME. CG: BUT I KIND OF THINK THAT'S LIKE CG: THE WAY HE GREETS PEOPLE? AG: This game is so stupid. CG: IN ANY CASE I THINK HE'S PROBABLY ALL STABBED OUT.
This would be ridiculously chill even from someone who isn’t extremely cagey about his blood colour -- and it’s not that Karkat suddenly doesn’t care any more, because as soon as Vriska says she’ll ask Terezi or Jack what colour he’s bleeding, he tells her that he’s out of Terezi’s range, Jack is sworn to secrecy, and Sollux (who’s incommunicado) is the only one who knows how to make Trollian’s viewport feature work. (Given we saw how easy it is to use earlier, I’m surprised Vriska doesn’t try to figure it out herself.)
Over on the next panel, the viewer is now Jack, a few minutes prior to this conversation. Contrary to Karkat’s protestations, Jack stabs him because He's got a pretty sharp tongue and can't seem to keep it sheathed. He is curious when Karkat cares less about the wound and more about Jack seeing his blood colour, which is apparently some freakish mutation. Jack looks at his knife…

CHEL: While it’s not a realistic depiction of the colour, recall that this is the shade of red used in-comic to depict human blood. This reveal probably isn’t a surprise to anyone by now, if you’ve encountered fanart, and honestly it wasn’t a huge mindblowing revelation on my first read before I knew, but I do think it’s a clever little “aha, THAT’S why!” moment. Skilfully done.
It seems he's the only one of his kind with this mutant candy-red blood. An outcast. He thinks he was put on this planet covered in an ocean of his own blood to be taunted. Punished for something. Saddest story you ever heard. Got to do something to shut him up.

BRIGHT: Awww. That’s kind of sweet.
This little interchange gave rise to the ‘Stabdads’ fandom phenomenon, where Spades Slick is envisaged as Karkat’s father-figure. In Homestuck canon, it’s dubious how much affection Slick has for Karkat. He seems more irritated by him than anything else, but that’s about on par for how he treats the rest of the Midnight Crew. On the other hand, it clearly makes a massive impact on Karkat. We’ve seen how important blood colour is on Alternia and how insecure he is about his own; his sudden rush of fellow-feeling towards Jack is understandable, even if it does make him way too forgiving about having been stabbed.
CHEL: Karkat and Jack shake hands, and proceed to be in cahoots. Cahoooooooots. Doodling on the defaced parking ticket from earlier, they draft OPERATION REGISURP.
Your whole team executes the plan along the course of its journey, employing espionage, mind control tactics, political sabotage, vicious interrogations and cold blooded assassinations. Everyone does their part and you begin to learn the true meaning of teamwork, as well as this troll disease called friendship.
Yeah, it actually happening is skipped over with one paragraph, but that’s probably a good thing with all the complexity already going on, and we do hear more details about it. First, we’re reminded of the existence and functions of the Queens’ Rings, the magic rings the queens of Derse and Prospit have which give them traits and powers from whatever the players put in their sprites. The trolls have put their lusii in their sprites, except for Aradia, whose lusus died long ago, so she got in the sprite herself. The Queen could put up with getting bits and pieces from eleven hideous monsters (well, ten hideous monsters and one adowable little fairybull thing oh my gosh it’s cuuuute) tacked onto her, but what she absolutely won’t stand for is the other thing Aradia put in her sprite…

She could not stand bearing the visage of the most loathsome creature known to existence. So vile is its appearance, so contemptible its purpose, all depictions of the creature let alone members of its population are permanently banned from any jurisdiction in the reach of her agents. Those of its kind go by many names, and so does the reviled patron god they herald - THE GREAT DETESTATION, KING PONDSQUATTER, SPEAKER OF THE VAST JOKE, or most commonly, BILIOUS SLICK.
Recall that AR thought of the hieroglyphs in the Frog Temple as “illegal pictography”. We’ll find out later why the Black Queen has such a revulsion for frogs, it’s important. But the important part right now is that she took the ring off. At the time of planning it’s in the ROYAL VAULT.
We briefly see a moment in the future of the Black Queen wrapped in rags, just like the human sessions’ White Queen, wandering the desert as the BANISHED QUASIROYAL, and the caption notes the plan was a success.
However, Doc Scratch appears in the desert in front of her, and it’s noted she was given a new purpose. This, it seems, is the origin of Snowman.
FAILURE ARTIST: I would like if there was some canon Homestuck material expanding on this REGISURP plot.
BRIGHT: Same! It sounds really interesting. One example of Homestuck’s idiosyncratic pacing, I suppose -- we spend pages and pages on trivial alchimeter nonsense, but skip over something more meaty.
CHEL: The Red Team work on that, while the Blue Team battle their own session… or so they think. Yeah, I’m sure you’ve all already figured it out, but the trolls hadn’t just yet. They note that their prototypes are affecting the opposite team’s underlings, and the readers are shown Alternia’s two Frog Temples, one near Aradia’s home and the other near Kanaya’s, each with six pillars outside (one seems to have five, but the sixth is hidden behind the building). Superimposed on each other, the pillars make a full ring of twelve.
The truth was it had always been the same session all along. That your teams were not competing, but cooperating toward a common goal. In the more drawn out form of this adventure's narrative, figuring this out would have been a huge deal. We would have been completely blown away by this stunning revelation. Wow. Same session all along. Really? Huh.
This is what Aradia’s been so mysterious about. She knew. We’re provided with a handy diagram, in case we haven’t been able to keep up.

After watching the phrases MOBIUS DOUBLE and REACH AROUND toggle for a few minutes while in a sort of stupor, you finally snap out of it.
(I just noticed, the Blue Team are the Derse dreamers and the Red Team are the Prospit dreamers. Neat!)
The reader’s attention is drawn instead to the Aquarius and Pisces symbols in the top left, belonging to characters we haven’t met yet, and the narration promises we’ll learn about them soon. Drawing attention again to GA’s Virgo symbol, the narration muses about her.
It will probably be quite some time before you get to be her. It could very well be pages and pages and pages.
Naturally, we jump right back to her.
GA’s intro is long, so we’ll take it piece by piece.
Your name is KANAYA MARYAM.
The Sanskrit name for Virgo is “Kanya”, and it’s also the name of a town in Japan. “Maryam” is the Arabic version of “Mary”, as in Jesus’ mother. It may also be a reference to Marya Zaleska, the title character of the movie “Dracula’s Daughter”.
You are one of the few of your kind who can withstand the BLISTERING ALTERNIAN SUN, and perhaps the only who enjoys the feel of its rays. As such, you are one of the few of your kind who has taken a shining to LANDSCAPING. You have cultivated a lush oasis around your hive, and in particular, you have honed your craft through the art of TOPIARY, sculpting your trees to match the PUFFY ORACLES from your dreams. You have embraced the tool of this trade, which conveniently is the weapon of choice for those who would hunt the HEINOUS BROODS OF THE UNDEAD which crawl from the sand at sunrise to feast on the light and the living.
Couple things established here; trolls are not only nocturnal but actively harmed by their planet’s sun, and undead beings other than ghosts exist. Said traditional weapon for hunting them is a chainsaw, which we can see lying against her bookshelf, a reference to the Evil Dead movies.
It would be convenient if you actually hunted them, but it is of course far too dangerous, every bit as suicidal as attempting to poach the terrible MUSCLEBEASTS who roam at night. So you indulge in your bright fascination with the grim through literature. Just before the sun goes down and you join your flora in rest, you immerse yourself in tales of RAINBOW DRINKERS and SHADOW DROPPERS and FORBIDDEN PASSION.
Rainbow drinkers are, as discussed later on, troll vampires. I don’t think shadow droppers are ever expanded on, but they might be zombies or werebeasts. Troll goths, apparently, are the reverse of human goths, dressing in bright colours and staying up in the daytime, which makes sense for a species who can only safely go out at night.
You are one of the few of your kind with JADE GREEN BLOOD. As such you are one of the few who could be selected and raised by a VIRGIN MOTHER GRUB, an event so rare as to elude documented precedent. She would defend you from desert threats, and though her life would be short, in time you would assure her of progeny.
Recall that the Mother Grub is required for troll reproduction.
You are a SEAMSTRESS or a RAGRIPPER or a TREETRIMMER or a LUMBERJACK, whichever you care to be, and your unique hive is equipped with a great supply of advanced technology to accommodate your interests. The technology and indeed the hive itself were all recovered from the ruins nearby when you were very young. The seed of your hive was deployed on the volcanic rocks beneath the sand with the assistance of your lusus and her remarkable burrowing skills, and you have lived there happily together since. You know the ruins and the hive and everything here that is not sand and rock originated from the world of your dreams. You also know that one day you will visit this world while you are awake. That day is today.
Like Jade, Kanaya has been awake on Prospit for years, and the technology in question is Skaian in origin, so that’s how she knows what’s going on with the game.
Kanaya is prompted to equip her chainsaw, which promptly turns into a lipstick in a Problem Sleuth reference. Like Jade, she has a Wardrobifier, set to randomise, which suddenly turns her black shirt and red skirt into a red leaf-print dress. She takes out the lipstick.
You can choose between your trademark jade or black. Even though a troll's lips are naturally black. But they can always be blacker, and a lady with a true sense of style knows this.
She goes with green, her dress turns into a blue kimono, and she’s messaged by someone with a fuschia Pisces symbol. This person, named cuttlefishCuller, turns out to be rather excitable, greeting her in all caps and following it up with Glub glub glub glub glub!
BRIGHT: This conversation is pretty sweet, with some friendly joking about CC’s quirk (they stick hyphens in front of their capital Es) and mention of their Collapsing And Expanding Bladder Based Aquatic Vascular System. There’s another mention of moirails, with CC saying they’ll have to join the game late to keep an eye on theirs.
It also turns out both CC and Kanaya are having some premonitions of what’s to come! Kanaya is seeing visions in the clouds of Skaia, the same way Jade does, but CC hears whispers from a mysterious ‘she’ who needs her voice keeping down. It’s implied to be CC’s lusus, as both Kanaya and CC are aware their lusii are going to die soon.
Kanaya hopes to be with her lusus as she dies, but looks out of the window to find the Virgin Mother Grub has already passed away, apparently of natural causes.
CHEL: The Mother Grub was seen briefly before; it’s a moth-like creature with a huge fat body the size of a bus, with wings too small to ever lift it, horns the same shape as Kanaya’s, and a skull-like head with big lips. The skull on Terezi’s Doomsday Scale was, we can tell now, a Mother Grub, except quite a lot bigger - presumably a breeding Grub.
BRIGHT: Kanaya changes back into her original outfit, and goes down to live up to her end of the bargain… which entails slicing a hole in her lusus with her chainsaw and pulling out a round object covered in spikes the colour of trolls’ horns, called a Matriorb. Kanaya stores it in her sylladex; she’s using a CHASTITY MODUS, which locks each card away, and the key will serendipitously be discovered when it’s time for the card to be unlocked. These modii are getting more and more esoteric.
Kanaya proceeds to have a conversation with her own moirail, Vriska, which we already read earlier.
You then proceed to have the rest of this conversation we already read, bugging and fussing and meddling through the special and magical union one can only describe as being in moirallegiance with another. At least, you guess that's how you would describe it. Maybe. Troll romance sure is confusing!
Yes, yes it is. (Spoiler: It’s not that confusing once it’s explained.)
Kanaya doesn’t have long to dwell on the conversation, as she’s contacted by caligulasAquarium, someone with a violet Aquarius symbol who she doesn’t seem to think highly of. It rapidly becomes apparent why.

CHEL: Trolls are supposed to come bi/pan as standard, so why does he need to specify “girl crush”? I wonder if Hussie hadn’t decided that yet when he wrote this part, but I’m not sure.
WHITE SBURB POSTMODERNISM: 34
CA’s gender hasn’t been revealed, but let’s not kid ourselves, we know from how he’s talking that he’s a dude. Nice Girls certainly exist but they don’t tend to get portrayed as so whiny in fiction, plus CC comes off as very girly, and that leaves us with six boy and six girl trolls. Balance and opposites and counterparts are a running theme throughout Homestuck. Not that there can’t be nonbinary characters, as some show up in Hiveswap; just that there would most likely have to be an even number of them, split evenly between the groups of players. Fine by me as a nonbinary person with a thing for balance and even numbers of my own.
Also, note that we’ve seen this guy, or at least his hand and foot, before. This is the litter-hater in the bowling shoes.

Funny words aside, Hussie does a good job at laying down context for what auspisticism is here; we now know that it involves mediating between two parties who dislike each other and that it’s a form of black romance. Meshing worldbuilding naturally into the dialogue is something Homestuck does really well at times.
Anyway, CA is trying to get in contact with Vriska because he asked her to make something for him and now she’s blowing him off.

While CA is obviously a douche, there’s something funny about how over-the-top he is about it and how utterly oblivious he is to the idea that Kanaya might have a problem with a device that would kill all landdwellers, although the humour is inversely proportionate to how likely he is to pull it off.
CHEL: Maybe I’m strange, but I think he’s adorable. I get the impression of a small kid trying to puff himself up to adult size.
BRIGHT: There’s also more romance talk, and this next bit is one I find interesting:

I’m going to take a step back from Homestuck itself for a moment and talk about kismessitude as it’s portrayed in fandom. People tend to envision it in a variety of ways -- some see it as a BDSM relationship, some as a way of pushing a rival to be better, some as just straight-up hate-sex -- but most depictions show it as something that only affects the two people involved.
Here, though? CA’s talking about kismessitude as something that’s potentially really damn dangerous, to other people besides those involved, and cites history as a backup -- implying it can really be that dangerous, and it’s not just a teenager’s flight of fancy. (Although, that said, CA is clearly using this to try and get Kanaya in a relationship with him, so how sincere he is is questionable.)
CHEL: Later on we do see a little bit of one of the historical cases he might have been citing. We’ll discuss it more then. Also, I do like him saying “sunny” instead of “gloomy”. Makes sense!
Kanaya tells CA none of this matters, and he sneers about the “purity of the bloodline”. That’s an… uncomfortable turn of phrase, especially since he’s speaking to someone not covered by the “purity” standard, but since it applies to aliens and it’s in a society where that’s hammered into its inhabitants it’s not a Problematykks issue. Kanaya tells him it still won’t matter because their race will be wiped out entirely, and his reaction is remarkably understated:
CA: huh CA: wwell ok HURRY UP AND DO NOTHING: 11
CA says he knows Kanaya doesn’t lie except to herself, surprisingly perceptive for one so puffed-up otherwise. CA might be smarter than he’s letting on? He asks if her clouds told her that; that was the reader’s assumption too, but she says no, she has a different source. Uh-oh. We know what the last source of information was, and it cost Vriska an arm and an eye-sevenfold. CA’s own clouds “hide nothin but misfortune and monstrosities”, so we can guess she’s Prospit and he’s Derse. He goes back to nagging her to tell Vriska to talk to him, and when she continues to refuse he poutily steps off.
CA: you dont wwant to be our auspistice cause you dont wwant to get locked into that sort of relation wwith her i can respect that
Kanaya denies this, and CA says everyone knows, including Karkat.
GA: Its Unbelievable GA: Her Patience CA: wwhat CA: wwhoa wwait wwho GA: Never Mind CA: ok wwait did she talk to you today CA: wwhat did she say CA: or glub or wwhatevver
They’re talking about CC, if it wasn’t clear. Kanaya, in a callback to John’s comment to Terezi, facetiously tells him that she talked about Longing To Touch You Indiscretely and That Shes Basically In The Scarlet Throes For You. CA, flustered, picks up that she’s teasing him, and she tells him the truth, that CC’s just concerned as a moirail.
CA: if youre not savvvvy about howw you define yourself to people CA: you can just splash into the moirail zone before you knoww wwhich wways upwward
I’m going to comment on this attitude in a bit more detail when we get a clearer explanation of what moirallegiance actually is. CA leaves her with some arc words.

Kanaya heads back to her room, planning to emphatically not meddle but help her friends, and consults her source; it’s fortunately not a Doc Scratch-related one at all. It is, in fact, Rose’s long-forgotten GameFAQ, saved on a server floating in the Furthest Ring, to which Prospit’s clouds directed her. I have to show you the panel for a moment though…

I’m sure there was a way we could see the screen without having it facing away from Kanaya who’s supposed to be reading it.
You can only assume this took place a long time ago. This race is likely ancient, preceding yours by millions of sweeps. Maybe billions! You like to try to imagine the adventures of these players. Were they successful in repopulating their race? Did they manage to protect their matriorb and hatch a new mother grub? Could they hold it together, or were they torn apart by the complex social dynamics, the matespritships and moirallegiences and auspisticisms and kismesissitudes that will surely plague your group along the way? You have little doubt they succeeded with flying colors.
Oh dear, dramatic irony. Kanaya fantasises about a troll version of Rose, thinking she must have been the leader of this supposedly long-ago group.
And yet they appear to have been the only of their kind to have risen to the challenge in a session stacked heavily against them.
Huh. So is this just because Kanaya can’t find more information, or are the four kids in fact the only humans who successfully got into the game? Picking four specifically white-coded kids to be the last of the human race due to supposedly their own competence is… not a good choice. And why the hell couldn’t other people succeed? This strikes me as more of the whole theme of “nobody matters except the people we’re focusing on”. A good lampshading of video game tropes, but in a literary story, that’s the opposite message to everything I’ve ever read, and it’s a creepy one.

It’s more disability slapstick, but here the point of the joke comes off as being more that Vriska is a jerk and Tavros’ reaction is really understated than any reasonable person being supposed to assume Tavros is wrong for not being able to climb stairs. Emphasis on “comes off as”, unfortunately. I’m still gonna give a Problematykks point, and further experience with Hussie’s attitude to disability has soured the joke somewhat, even in just the next couple of pages.

Tavros is really great here. He’s obviously not comfortable fighting with Vriska, and repeatedly tries to redirect her into building him ramps instead of engaging. But, at the same time, he holds his ground and doesn’t let her push him around, and won’t let go of solid hard reality in the face of Vriska trying to emotionally manipulate him.
FAILURE ARTIST: And yet people still call him a wimp.
BRIGHT: Vriska retaliates, because of course she does, by grabbing his wheelchair with her cursor and shaking it about. If Hussie left it at that, everything would be unobjectionable, at least in terms of narrative voice. Instead, well…
Now she's done it. She has awoken the mighty inner fury that is... RUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUFIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
CHEL: It just occurred to me to mention that the name Rufio comes from a character in the movie Hook, the leader of the Lost Boys after Peter Pan left, played by Dante Basco. Tavros’ mental image of him is a reference to that character.
FAILURE ARTIST: Dante Basco did read Homestuck, with hilarious results as we will see.
But unfortunately, Rufio is not real. He's imaginary. A fake. Like a made up friend, the way fairies are. You continue to be sad and alone.
BRIGHT: Eurgh.
Let me be clear: Tavros having no further recourse to deal with Vriska’s abuse beyond his visualised self-esteem is a problem for the character, but it’s not necessarily a narrative problem per se. Escapism is a thing. You could get a decent character arc out of Tavros learning better ways to deal with harassment he can’t escape. It is a narrative problem when the narrator mocks it and makes him out to be pathetic for even trying it.
CHEL: I’d consider this to be just Tavros’ own thought process, but, sadly, this kind of narrative sneering at him carries on throughout Tavros’ presence in the comic and the fandom seems to buy into it. Tavros gets a lot of hate for reasons which mostly boil down to him being a male abuse victim; there’s a feeling that he should “try harder” to fight back, despite him being physically disabled and a member of a caste out of sight beneath her on the social ladder and legally permitted to be killed by her on a whim. Might that count as a point for WHITE SBURB POSTMODERNISM, for Huss and the fandom not taking the social dynamics into account for why Tavros can’t defend himself?
BRIGHT: I don’t know if it’s fair to count against the fandom when we’re reviewing Homestuck proper, but we can definitely count against Hussie!

CHEL: It’s also notable that the common fandom interpretation of Tavros is as Hispanic-coded, at least partly due to his Spanish username, and of Vriska as white-coded. That’s probably not helping.
Since Hussie appears to expect us to agree with Vriska that this is funny, I’m adding another to these as well.

BRIGHT: What’s weird about this whole mess is that Hussie doesn’t — yet — try to say that Tavros should be trying to get stronger; his disability is fully acknowledged. I feel like this kind of mockery is usually accompanied by the attitude that disabled people should just get over their disability, but Hussie’s clear that Tavros can’t. Which means he should do...what, exactly?
CHEL: Not have let Vriska disable him in the first place, presumably. Never mind that, you know, she has mind control powers so he didn’t really have a choice in that either. That is, however, an argument Vriska fans actually make. Apparently some of them actually blame him for not flying when she threw him off the cliff, which… well, unpowered flight is a thing that can happen in the comic but he certainly couldn’t do it then.
BRIGHT: ...Apparently I retain the capacity for surprise at how awful people can be. The fuck?
Back in the comic, Tavros fortunately does have one other means of recourse. Back in her hive, Vriska is suddenly prodded in the back with a flying toilet, courtesy of Kanaya.

CHEL: Did I mention Kanaya is my zodiac troll? I can only long to reach her heights of awesome. Of course the ability to levitate toilets would kinda help.
BRIGHT: Vriska heads down to her treasure vault and retrieves a pair of ROCKET SHOES. The captchalogue code for these is ‘PSHOOOES’, which amuses me greatly. Vriska sends the code to Tavros, who combines it with the code for his wheelchair to create a flying wheelchair. Now that is a good use of alchemising!

CHEL: Awww!
Tavros flies up to the Gate, and we cut back to him later on, leading an entourage of communed-with imps and ogres to move obstacles and help him solve puzzles. Using his skills well, I see! In another set of ruins the imps load jigsaw pieces of rock into a frog-shaped alcove,
Things, however, don’t continue to go so well, because Hussie hates this poor kid. I do not mean that facetiously. Statements he’s made elsewhere imply he has a hell of a lot of contempt for several of the characters he created, which I don’t understand at all. We’ll go into this after Act 7, but I get the sensation that the characters are merely tools to show off the complexity and meta references, which are the parts he really cares about.
BRIGHT: It’s not unknown for authors to dislike characters they wrote; the great Terry Pratchett reputedly hated his character Rincewind. The key difference is that in Pratchett’s case, the audience couldn’t tell. Hussie, on the other hand, tends to make his disdain pretty obvious, to the detriment of the story.
CHEL: That’s a point. Conan Doyle grew to hate Sherlock Holmes, too. He didn’t, however, set up situations solely to shit on Holmes in his books.
BRIGHT: I think that’s the key. I’ll forgive a multitude of failings as long as the author seems to be treating the characters fairly. That doesn’t mean that good things have to happen to them — plenty of bad things can happen and I’ll enjoy it — it just means that the author has to...respect how the character feels and would behave, I guess.
Of course, respect is Hussie’s antithesis, so.
Also, nothing so far has shown Vriska to be anything other than a (granted, entertaining) bully. I wasn’t around while Homestuck was updating, so I’m not sure when her fandom took off, but it has to be later than this, surely?
CHEL: I don’t know. I wasn’t around till about mid-Act 6.
What was I on about? Oh yes. Tavros is interrupted by Vriska again, who bitches him out for doing things the boring way and seeking the boring lore.
AG: The minds of your consorts are very soft and impressiona8le. AG: As easily manipul8ed as all those imps you've 8een 8ossing around. AG: I have picked apart their tiny little lizard 8rains and seen through all the smoke and mirrors of their riddles. AG: I have gotten to the truth they are guarding. Interesting theory. Tavros thinks befriending his monsters instead of killing them is cheating, and Vriska grudgingly agrees but is annoyed he isn’t killing anything. She claims to have designed a better and more challenging quest for him; he asks after her own quest, and she says she has time because Kanaya’s busy.

Strange word choice for a species raised by animals, but okay. Vriska sends Tavros a map to the next Gate, and he sets off in his little rocket chair. Little does he know.
You proceed through what seems to be your second gate, into the LAND OF MAPS AND TREASURE. The THIEF OF LIGHT lies in wait.
In a callback to our last meeting of Breath and Light players, Tavros crashes through Vriska’s wall and is left hanging upside-down in the rocket chair from the large cobwebs across the room, while Vriska sleeps on a pile of broken eight-balls. Doesn’t look comfortable, but trolls rest in worse places later. Vriska wakes, and Tavros falls head-first onto the floor.
Here is where it gets incredibly uncomfortable, and we have to show it in detail to assign points properly and so that there’s no ambiguity about what’s happening, so if you have any sexual assault, ableism, underage, mind control, or victim-blaming triggers you may want to skip this part. No clothing is removed but it’s very unpleasant to read and the attitude toward it is worse. Seriously, this is Taklamakan Zoo levels of bad.

Vriska sits up. She’s wearing a very short strappy white Tinkerbell dress with her sign on it, and what look like over-the-knee socks, a commonly fetishised style of clothing. I remind you these characters are supposed to be thirteen years old. The dress is also the same as the one worn by the fairy in the artwork on Tavros’ desktop background. I don’t know if Vriska had seen that or not.

To be fair she’s just in an actually-more-modest version of what Peter Pan’s sidekick/love interest wears and the socks come off as more dorky than sexy.

Everyone knows that just a pinch of SPECIAL STARDUST along with a happy thought will allow any boy to get up and walk again. Everyone knows this because it is in the classic tale, PUPA PAN. Young Pupa flies through the window of a fairy girl's respiteblock, falls on the floor, and has trouble getting up like an enormous pansy. The fairy girl then helps him walk again, and in return, he teaches her to fly, even though she probably already knows how to fly. Because she's a fairy. They fly out of her window together, and have magical adventures for many sweeps thereafter. To be honest, you hardly know a damn thing about Pupa Pan. But you do not care.

I might be projecting because the fandom has made me loathe her, but it honestly comes off like Vriska dressed up like this in the first place less to seduce Tavros and more to make sure she thoroughly ruined his favourite thing to hurt him further, especially if the narration is supposed to be things she’s actually saying to him.
The stardust did nothing! Probably because it is just glittery powder with no magical properties whatsoever and is basically bullshit. Because in case it wasn't clear, magic isn't real, and neither are miracles. OR It could just be that Pupa has failed to have a happy thought! Your duty is clear. You will have to MAKE him have happy thoughts. Vriska: Make Pupa have happy thoughts.

He certainly doesn’t seem to be having happy thoughts now. Notice his expression, what we can see of it, looks terrified, he’s trembling, and let’s recall that he’s paralysed from the waist down. Even if he wasn’t, she’s of a far, far higher caste than him, legally permitted to do whatever she wants to him, including killing him if he tries to resist. It’s kind of gone back and forth on, but higher bloods are a few times stated to be a lot stronger than lower bloods, and if they work like humans, they’re in puberty right now, a time at which human girls tend to get taller and stronger sooner than boys. Again, it’s gone back and forth on, but a common interpretation is that female trolls are stronger than male trolls in general and/or have the social power advantage. Let’s also remember that, even if none of those factors apply, Vriska has mind control powers. There is no point here at which Tavros has the advantage, nothing he can use as leverage on her. She can do whatever the hell she wants, and she does.
BRIGHT: We’ve also been explicitly shown that Vriska has little to no respect for anyone else’s autonomy if she finds it inconvenient, and that Tavros is her favourite punching bag, and that his ability to stand up for himself when she gets going is extremely limited.

CHEL: Despite the odds stacked against him, Tavros struggles against the kiss forced on him, and when Vriska pushes him back, doesn’t respond with anything but a look of horror, though she appears to expect him to, as a flickering heart-spade with a question mark over it appears between them. I’m not sure whether that’s supposed to be the thought process of him or her or both.

BRIGHT: Vriska has used her mind-control powers on Tavros before, and when it happened she walked him off a cliff. There is basically no way that her doing it again isn’t going to be a traumatic experience for him, above and beyond the inherent horror of losing control over one’s body.
I’m inclined to think that forcibly altering his emotions is worse, though. Being paralysed was bad enough, but Tavros knows what happened and he knows how he feels about it. Making him fall in love with her is just…on one level, it’s a horrible assault on his autonomy as a person, and on another level, it’s tailor-made to make him doubt himself and believe the encounter was something he wanted.
FAILURE ARTIST: I hadn’t thought that he might now consider the encounter as consensual, which would explain his later reaction.
CHEL: Tavros paws at her legs, making kissy faces, and she looks vaguely concerned. Note the background still depicts wavy blue rays coming off her, showing her power is still active.

I’m not sure what she’s supposed to be thinking in this last panel. Is she feeling guilty? Is she disappointed that he didn’t like her under his own power? Has she just decided he’s too useless to be worth the effort? Any could be true.
BRIGHT: I read that as disappointment that even when he ‘liked’ her, he didn’t act the way she wanted. (And the way Tavros acted is kind of disturbing. ‘Mindlessly pawing at someone’ is not what I’d expect from him if he was legitimately attracted to someone.)
FAILURE ARTIST: The common interpretation these days was she was realizing she wasn’t into boys which okay that’s good for her but she should feel more bad about molesting him.
CHEL: That also makes no sense, because she shows interest in multiple boys later.
I’m also not entirely sure if Vriska had the intention of actually raping Tavros here (in the standard way, I mean, as one could argue that mind control is a form of rape), or just making out with him. The fact that she dressed up in vaguely fetishy clothing isn’t making it look good, though. Yes, she’s very young, but traumatised kids in particular have been known to lash out sexually like that. It’s a way of reasserting personal power, and I imagine it would be more prevalent in a society with no sapient adult supervision. While there are mitigating circumstances involved in their social situation and Vriska not really having ever had a chance to learn better, that doesn’t make this not a horrible thing to do, or not traumatising for Tavros.
BRIGHT: The clothing could potentially be down to Vriska wanting to look ‘adult’ without fully understanding why it looks adult. That does come up sometimes with teens — they want to experiment with clothing because that’s how adults dress, not because they want to look sexy, or they might dress a certain way for dates because that’s the social model they have for How Dates Work.
And if I read it like that, this basically looks like Vriska having the date equivalent of a dolls’ tea party. Which says volumes about how she views Tavros’s autonomy.
CHEL: Good point. Though honestly it would say volumes about same either way!
BRIGHT: I said earlier that Vriska is better than Equius at recognising when other people’s desires conflict with hers, and she is, but that doesn’t mean she respects those differences. She just recognises that they’re there, and overrides them. This is a prime example of Vriska viewing Tavros as something between a chew-toy and a prop. First she kicks him around and terrifies him, then she expects him to be able to get over those emotions at the drop of a hat and respond to her advances — and, moreover, she wants him to respond in a certain way, which Tavros has zero way of knowing. This is the first time she’s shown that sort of interest in him, unless her earlier behaviour was the Alternian equivalent of pigtail-pulling.
...I think maybe that was in fact Alternian pigtail-pulling. Or at least Vriska’s version of pigtail-pulling.
CHEL: That’ll actually make more sense, once we explain what the spade symbol means.

It also occurred to me during this sequence to think again about how Karkat contemptuously swears at and hangs up the phone on the injured Tavros. This, at first glance, seems to be very much at odds with the “cranky but caring” impression we’re supposed to have of Karkat… but it fits precisely with Hussie’s opinion of Tavros and how pathetic he is for allowing a much more powerful person to permanently disable him. I know at the moment it looks like I’m not separating the character from the author, but it’ll become clear as we go that that is what he thinks.

CHEL: The actual assault is over now, but there’s one more picture of it. The ramifications must continue to be discussed, so tread cautiously. The actual act is over now, though.
Said ramifications come pretty quickly. Kanaya, having dealt with getting herself into the game and prototyped her own lususprite, decides to check on Vriska.
Ideally she has not gotten herself into too much trouble. And ideally the dramatic irony has not gotten so thick you could draw a dotted line on it with a tube of lipstick and cut it in half with a chainsaw.
Of course, she sees the exact moment Vriska kisses Tavros.

Humorous art aside over, let’s watch Kanaya’s reaction in more detail. She angrily looks at a copy of the Tinkerbell dress, which she presumably sent the alchemiter code for rather than the actual item to Vriska, hence why she still has it.

Like Karkat, Kanaya is presented as the caring one, the protective one. The “mom friend” of the group. And yet, she looks at this, in which Tavros is clearly frightened and struggling, and her reaction is to be mad that Vriska didn’t want to wear the dress for a date with her. I’m not sure whether this says more about Hussie’s opinion of Tavros or the social system of Alternia or both, but it certainly says a lot.
