this is probably one of my favorite videos on youtube (although i do also love the man who tried to fake an element), but this one also goes into late cold war sciences races so give it a watch if you’re into that stuff!

top 5 video essays!!!
just 5?? okay, um. i'm gonna have to run my favorite video essays playlist through a few filters: minimum one hour, one video per creator, and no hbomberguy or defunctland. everyone here knows roblox_oof.mp3 and the disney theme, i want to show some love for other videos)
1- The man who tried to fake an element (Bobbybroccoli) He's a master of explaining just enough of the historical and scientific context to put things into perspective while keeping it interesting. The way he visually depicts what he's talking about is also always fantastic. This video is the pinnacle of both of those, I think.
Also it's a really interesting and funny story. How he thought he'd get away with it still baffles me.
2- FNaF & Undertale: How to/NOT to Tell A Story (Spaceman Scott) The thesis is perfectly unbiased. There's no objectively right or wrong way to tell a story, let's look at these two culture-changingly popular stories and how differently they were created and are told.
The other 75 minutes of the video are absolutely shitting on Scott Cawthon and talking about how much the attention, love, and care Toby Fox put into Undertale shows.
3- The False Evolution of Execution Methods (Jacob Geller) Incredibly well researched, thought out, and presented. It would have been easy for it to just be talking about the statistics, but he does a really phenomenal job of putting them in the context of societal and technological changes and not pulling punches or being too graphic when discussing what happens when things go wrong with the different methods.
I don't want to spoil the ending, but it hit me like a ton of bricks.
Honestly the only reason it isn't higher is because it is such a heavy watch. (yes it's technically 53 minutes but I had to pause and process shit for at least seven minutes while watching it. It counts.)
4- Who Is Nazeem REALLY? Skyrim's Most HATED Character (Camelworks) I've done some deep dives into incredibly niche things, but this takes the goddamn cake. I want to study the creator like a bug. No one asked, but my god they delivered a fucking masterpiece.
5- The Most Painful Death Ever (VIEWER DISCRETION) (Wendigoon) Nuclear physics and weird medical things are both interests of mine, so I found it fascinating. That said, oh my god take the warning seriously. It was all presented very respectfully and tactfully, but the facts of the situation are intense to say the least. I'm not squicked by medical stuff in general, but some of it had me feeling truly shaken.
honorable mention for This is Financial Advice (Folding Ideas) for making cryptocurrency, both the thing itself and the culture around it, make sense to me.

Hello, i love niche community drama videos, are you willing to share some? I need to watch something while i eat this bag of celery
hi! i don't actually watch a ton of community drama videos, but i've been really liking bobbybroccoli's content for the past few months. his videos are generally about complex scientific topics and drama that happens within them, but he breaks down the concepts in a way i find really helps me understand what's going on even with little prior knowledge. he animates the timelines in blender, too, so there's neat visualization of what's going on

ohhhhh loving bobbybroccoli videos bc like. this is my field. when he says a bunch of scientists didnt feel comfortable making accusations of fraud when it was readily apparent, I Understand. when he says grad students were pressured into donating eggs for experiments and were not comfortable reporting their supervisor for this, I Understand

thanks to bobbybroccoli I have both a basic understanding of physics and also of the US presidents in the 20th century. my brain loves to think in terms of historical events and the history and timeline aspect makes all they physics discoveries so much easier to put in context. also the nice visuals. I love editing.

11, 16, 23! :)
11. Favorite comment you’ve ever recieved on your work?
Oh that's such a hard question bc I've gotten a lot of sweet comments over the years! But one that sticks in my head from recently is one of my regulars for my commissions commented that he's appreciated seeing my art improve over the years thru the comms themselves and it made me really happy! Like aw shucks, you liked my art enough then and continue to enjoy it more as I improve and grow?! Golly! Wow!!
16. What’s the most daunting part of your process? Ex, planning, sketching, lineart, rendering etc
Planning and composition can be so hard esp if I need to rope everyone into a background!! Once I've gotten past the sketch I can usually get on with things smooth sailing but oh the planning... for comic pages it's hard to get the panel layouts to look good, I still struggle with that a lot too.
23. Do you listen to music or watch shows while you work? If so, what’s your favourite?
Definitely lotta music and youtube vids and podcasts! There's definitely too many to list favorites properly!! but I'll just go through a small sampling of the more recent go to's
Dice Funk! I love Dice Funk theyre wrapping up their current season Rezubian this Sunday and I highly recommend that one it's a good goofy scifi adventure for ppl who like something of a star trek/spelljammer type setting. Ya Like Ilithids? come get em.
I've had AJR's new Album Maybe Man on loop. and by the album I mean Inertia and a handful of the other songs, tho they're all good!
I also continuously compile playlists for all my projects, like Runaway Drakaina, my DnD comic I'm chipping away at, concepts I'd like to work on someday... the RD playlist is 6 hours long and rn the most recent addition is Gone by Morning by Madilyn Mei
I have been slowly (slowly...) watching hbomberguy's donkey kong nightmare stream after seeing him share his side channel, like on and off when I want something really in the background. no paying attention head empty just listening to a man struggle with an old game while raising bonkers $$$ for a good cause
I like watching speedpaints where the artists really go into their process, ABDIllustrates and GinjaNinjaOwO are two big favs in that department! they inspire me a lot esp when it comes to character creation!
BobbyBroccoli got me to engage in a feature length documentary abt Nortel when I don't particularly care for the history of like... tech companies. so glowing endorsement he makes great docs abt tech/science related scandals
I could go on and on but we would be here All Day

Movie Night Part Two but this time they watch a documentary so Johnny can prove they can be cool.
like Class Action Park or something
Honestly even the BobbyBroccoli youtube science videos could work or the Disney channel theme one cause that stuff is insane
Reader is like “idk how interesting could this actually be?” And then later it’s just “HOLY SHIT WHAT THE FUCK”
I actually LOVE documentaries irl and writing the reader disliking them was so hard

i love the bobbybroccoli SSC documentary bc of how absurd the corruption was and had to be, and that's just for a high-profile civilian scientific project
one of those things that really makes me question the united states military industrial complex
