“I don’t think so,” Etho shakes his head. He looks into his hands, picking at a chip in his nail. “I still loved you. Still love you.”

“Sure.” Bdubs doesn’t sound truly convinced, but he says it in a gentle voice that Etho’s only heard when Bdubs is making sure he’s okay when he hurts himself, a voice he heard a lot in the death game. But it doesn’t bite any less. Etho sighs.

“Why are you here, Bdubs?” he says, finally turning to him. “When there’s a perfectly good version of you asleep somewhere, alive.”

“Because you’re dreaming about apologizing to me, your brain’s stuck on hallucinating me,” Bdubs says, furrowing his brow. “Because you feel bad.”

“I don’t...I don’t think I feel bad.”

The shape of Bdubs’ face finally comes into view, the one he knows from outside the games, unbruised and awake.

this is from Night Swims (previously called You're My Favorite Ghost), and it takes place right after Hot Tea! gosh, this fic was so fun for me, I really dived right into how ethubs works as characters and tried my best to analyze etho without having bdubs there.

through this entire fic, etho's guilt and despair manifests physically as the "ghost" of bdubs, who follows him around his modded world. tldr: he can't sleep, and his guilt makes it worse! I originally got this idea after a beloved mutual (nightbug! hi!) sent me an ask curious on how etho dealt with the loss of bdubs post last life, and honestly. until that point, I don't think I'd realized that etho just. doesn't really go back to hermitcraft after last life. not in his videos, not really. he jumps straight into modded. and so I started writing!

this scene in particular is really interesting to me, because etho isn't really good at dealing with complex emotions, to me--he can, but he's a lot more likely to just pretend they don't bother him all that much. he's real easy going, real cool and chill, and I think there is a point where things get to him, but when they do, they really get to him (something I talked about in Spacer!). he tries hard to keep it at bay by working harder ("With no left over time for thinking too hard. With no left over time to mourn. Right.") but there comes a breaking point (this section) where he's forced to confront his feelings.

it was purposeful to have etho confront his feelings in a way that wasn't internal--that is, bdubs' ghost being the reason he "can't keep doing this" and eventually sends a letter to bdubs. so while he's trying to work and trying to put it off, those feelings get to a point where he's forced to do something about them, or risk making himself miserable in his condition. I think etho, alongside tango, are two characters that put big, difficult, complex feelings aside to deal with later, only to never come back to them. at least I think so!

this fic is actually titled after the half alive song Night Swims, chosen in post. the song is more of a spoken word piece, and I think it's descriptions of needing to shed feeling and take a break from the world, and from yourself, is really pertinant to what etho was experiencing. he's suffering through grief and self-doubt and anger with himself and isn't able to fully realize it. instead of facing those feelings head on, he takes a break, and in doing so, accidentally makes that grief worse by feeling like he's running from the source. it's only in Back Around, the follow up fic to Night Swims, that etho feels strong enough to face those feelings and return to hermitcraft, to season 9.

anyway! i'm still insane about ethubs to this day. i always meant to write another half alive inspired ethubs fic...

Chapter 3.5: OH GOD SHE KNOWS ME????? WELL NOT- NOT THAT HE IS ME

After the call Felix walked back to the practice room, he felt giddy. He almost had a little bounce in his step. He was always happy to help a friend in need. Felix couldn’t help replaying when she called him, “baby.” Maybe it was just because he hadn’t had that kind of affection from anyone but his members for the past 4-5 years.

                “Someone is happy.” Seungmin commented. This led to everyone looking at him.

                “What no… I mean yes, I am just so excited to dye my hair tomorrow.” He laughed nervously. Han looked at him with a funny look.

                “At least YOU are excited for the grey hair dye, I wanted blue again but noOooo. I have to go from grey to blond again.” Han laid out on the floor; Chan then got everyone back on topic.

Around the end of practice, Felix’s phone started blowing up. He practically sprinted to it and unlocked his phone.

                “You have to be FUCKING KIDDING ME!” Felix practically whisper-yelled at his phone. He genuinely thought he was in the clear here. What the hell was he supposed to do?? He can’t just TELL y/n he’s THE LEE FELIX. What if she sold him out? I mean yeah, she is so sweet and kind, but he only JUST called her. Maybe he should just delete his existence. That is such a good idea.

Felix went to go to the delete account button, but he stopped himself. He didn’t want this. Felix found himself trying to press it but physically couldn’t make himself. Okay wait, she doesn’t HAVE to know it’s him, people have weird doppelgangers all the time. Okay wait what if he like, made her stop liking them. Okay good plan, good plan.

Felix gave himself a little pat on the back, he really secured this! Packing up his stuff he started heading to the vending machine to get a drink. He was so excited to get home now. He was about pick a drink when someone walked up behind him. "Hey have you been feeling okay mate?" Felix looked up and saw Chan. "Oh yeah! I am doing great! I am just excited to get home and relax yaknow?" Felix said and finally picked a drink. "Is there like a new game out or something?" Chan put his card in to get a drink too. "Nah." Felix smiled to himself, "I have been playing an old game recently though and the community got revived so I guess I have been excited about that. The one Han and I played together a little while ago." Chan let out a hum and picked up his drink, "alright man, have fun!" Felix ended up leaving the JYP building with an actual spring in his step.

🌿how does creating make you feel?

Hm gor me it’s Not how creating makes me feel, rather, it’s how I feel that directs me to create. Writing was not a form of art I tried my hand at until very late but when I do, it’s usually an attempt to get things out, rip the bandaid off, write something on a paper and burn it afterwards, whisper a secret into the hollow of an old tree..: you get the gist.

What have the actual idea for this is my wide (lol) past of priv twt accounts. I realized tweeting a thought that ate me from the inside often helped to get it out of my mind so It’d not repeat inside my brain like those old bouncing windows logo sleep mode computer screen savers lmao. But yeah Most of the time the creating process comes from numbness or emotions on the negative spectrum- as sad as this might sound.

Phil was sat at his desk Kristin sat beside him, Phil’s leg bounced softly with slight nervousness as he finally clicked the go live button… Dozens of messages come flying in saying hi to Phil and Kristin others asking what the title means! Kristin smiles encouragingly with a hint of delight as she nods softly to Phil… He takes a deep breathe before speaking

“Heeyy guys how’s it going? As you can see by the title today I’m going to be doing a challenge… it probably will literally be my hardest challenge ever…” Kristin giggles softly “Oh it definitely will be! So chat to save Phil at least a little bit of flusteredness I’ll go head and tell you guys what the challenge is!” Chat cheers excitedly making Kristin giggle more at their excitement “okay the challenge is… Phil has to beat Minecraft while I tickle him!” Chat explodes with “woah the great philza Minecraft is ticklish?!” “Oh please that’s easy!” “No way! This is gonna be so good!” “I could never do that!” “Let’s go Phil!” And tons of other various messages!

Phil groans softly “I don’t know how I ever let you talk me into this” Kristin smiles “because I’m your wife and you love me that’s how!” He rolls his eyes softly “I guess I do…” Kristin scoffs poking his side softly “hey! He began punching a tree for some wood and then began making a crafting table before Kristin decided to strike! Right as he nearly had the table finished she tasered his sides making him squeal and jerk causing him to accidentally close his inventory “EEP!” Kristin smiled with satisfaction as she scribbled on his sides making him fall into laughter “NAHAHHAHA THIHIHISSS IHIHISSS SOHOHO NOHOTT FAHAHIHIHIRRR!” Kristin snickered softly “That’s the whole point of this challenge dear!” “WEHEHELLL IHHITT STIHINNKSS!” She giggled softly finally giving him a break and pulling her hands away to rest on her lap

She let him get some iron before once again starting… this time targeting his neck! Phil giggled squeakily twisting his head about while also still trying to keep his eyes on the game as to avoid falling in any huge holes or lava pools! “Ehehhehe nohohoooo nohottt thehehe nehehccckk!” Kristin giggled along with him “Oh yes the neck! It’s not even one of your worse spots so feel thankful I’m tickling here instead of maybe say your hips!” She gave a quick squeeze to his left hip for emphasis making him jump and squeak “EEK NO!” She nodded “See I’m actually being very nice”

Phil nods “ihihi shehehe thahhatt nohohowww!” She nods again “Good!” She continued a few minutes before deciding to up the anti! As Phil neared a lava pool to begin constructing a nether portal she switched from scratching at his neck to blowing raspberries which were much more effective! Phil squealed falling into surprised laughter “EEP NAHAHHA KKRIHISSTIHIHNN IHIMM GOHONNAHHA FHAHHALL INN THEHE LAHAHVHAHAH!” Phil’s hands were shaking so much with the urge to push Kristin away he could barely make the nether portal properly, Kristin giggled softly as she threw in a squeeze to Phil’s hips while blowing a raspberry under his left ear!

Phil jerked accidentally walking forwards right into the lava as he shrieked with laughter “AAEHE NAHAHAHHAHA NOOHOHOHO MYYY STUHUHUFFF!” Kristin stopped a few seconds later tossing her arms up in victory “WOOO! Lets go chat! We won!” Phil giggled residually as he rolled his eyes softly, once his giggles subsided he sat up straight saying “The hips were totally unfair and you know it!” Kristin grinned softly in satisfaction “I know that’s what made it all the more fun! Maybe someday we’ll have a rematch and we can make the hips off limits to try and make it easier for you”

Phil flushed softly “I- I don’t know about that… maybe I’m okay with accepting defeat…” Kristin snickered softly “Well guess we’ll just have to wait and see, we’ll see you guys later chat I hope you enjoyed the stream!”
