Bob and Gene's relationship is so important to me 😭
I could write actual essays about them, but their relationship, when it actually gets a bit of focus, is the sweetest, most endearing thing on planet earth. People who say they don't like each other have obviously not seen the show, because these two adore each other. Here are these two people who are so different, and usually don't understand each other, but always try to anyway. And despite their differences, they have some notable similarities they can bond over as well.
Especially when it comes to Bob. Even though Gene is way more eccentric and enthusiastic than he ever was (and is), he never puts down Gene for his interests and instead encourages them. And he's willing to give Gene some extra confidence whenever he needs it. One of my favorite examples is this exchange from the episode "Best Burger":
Gene saying he's always admired Bob gets. me. every. time!!!!! It's so clear by this scene how much Gene loves his dad, and just wants to do right by him! For anyone who says Gene was annoying or frustrating in this episode, I point to this scene--he was genuinely remorseful for getting distracted (which is very normal for a kid his age) and gave Bob a compliment that I'm sure he cherished despite the fact that he was crunched on time. Sure, Louise admires Bob as well, but would never outright say it like Gene, so I'm sure Bob has a soft spot for his son because of this moment. Also, I think it's so sweet how despite running out of time and being stressed, he still apologizes to Gene for snapping. There are a lot of layers to this scene, which is why it's one of my favorites.
Then, of course, there's Bob being the best Autism Dad in "The Laser-Inth", but I've already said so much about this episode:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He just wants to share his interests with Gene and is so sweet and understanding when Gene gets sensory overload 🥲
Oh yes, and then there's "Diarrhea of a Poopy Kid", where Bob says that he loves to feed Gene and him offering to eat with Gene once Gene gets all better 🥺:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gene inheriting Bob's love of food is so sweet and lovely 😭 Also, I love how supportive Bob is of Gene's Thanksgiving song. And he saying that Gene was the only one excited about his new, experimental Thanksgiving menu--
Oh yes, and there was the episode where they got trapped on a trapeze, and Bob said he'd never let anything happen to Gene! They indeed have a beautiful relationship:
Tumblr media
Bob is always there to calm Gene whenever he's feeling stressed, and I love it. He feels like Gene's rock, in a way, a shoulder he can always lean on whenever he needs it.
And that time they got excited about fixing Helen's sink!!! That was so adorable. Plus, it led to one of the best outros of the whole show:
youtube
Guess what? I'm not even done yet! One of my absolute favorite moments of them was in the episode "Boys Just Wanna Have Fungus", and at the end, they call each other their heroes. I mean 🥹
Tumblr media
They admire each other so much! And I agree that they'd probably be able to survive at least a couple days in the Apocalypse together. It helps that Bob's a cook.
And more recently, there was the time Gene realized how terrible VR is, and despite his nausea, Bob stuck around the whole time:
Tumblr media
He didn't have to stick around, he just wanted to, because he felt bad about Gene having a bad time. He would move heaven and earth for his son no matter what, and it's so beautiful to see.
I could list more examples, but I think you get the idea. Not only do Bob and Gene love each other, but they have one of the strongest and sweetest relationships in the series.

i know it SHOULD be the standard that dads are involved in their kids lives the same way that moms are but i always appreciate how much effort is out into protraying bob and linda as equally engaged and resonsible in the kids lives and household chores. like sometimes linda goes on field trips or volenteers at their school but bob does too!!! they both do household chores like laundry and washing the dishes and bob does most of the cooking but linda cooks breakfast and dinner for the kids sometimes. bob is the person up at 7am making the kids breakfast and driving them to their dentist appointments, he always attends their performances and him and linda take turns with who watches the restaurant and kids vs who runs the errands. bob is soo involved in his kids lives and what they like/dislike who their friends are and what their plans are for the upcoming weeks that it really makes other sitcom dads look completely incompetent. like he loves his kids SO MUCH he's always been responsible and taken care of household chores and parenting. and its good that linda can have fun sometimes too they're good parents :)

I want you to know I've been reading your The Cook, The Handyman, His Wife (They're Lovers) over the week and now have to remember when watching Bob's Burgers that they are actually not in a relationship in the show
T____T This is so, so sweet to read! I haven't had the energy or time to write lately so I'm really touched to hear that you're enjoying my series. It would make everything so much simpler if everyone accepted the inevitable, right? XD Thank you so much for the lovely message! I'm working on the next chapter of the newest story at the moment so I hope that you continue to have a good time as I continue to expand my happy universe of polycule perfection! <3

Things about my mom that make me think she’s Linda Belcher in real life
- fun supportive mom. Maybe too much sometimes
- owns porcelain babies. She once tried to tell me that she isn’t like Linda bc she doesn’t have porcelain babies, but then she remembered
- is. very open about things with her family
- glasses wearer
- when singing happy birthday to someone, she insists on singing “cha cha cha” and counting the person’s age. This sometimes cues groans from my dad, which feels very Bob to me
- dated a Bob once
- her husband (my dad) likes to make burgers and is very autistic
- met said husband in a bar. she was not engaged and he did not have a mustache but still
- is from new jersey
- she’s more of a coffee girly but she does drink wine. not to that extent but enough to warrant me getting her Linda themed wine glasses
- she has accidentally dressed like Linda too many times. The woman cannot wear a red sweater without embodying her
- has shoulder length dark hair
- says the most ridiculous things just because. she never knows what she’s saying
- she talks about how she could never be a history teacher bc she would make things up to entertain herself
- makes up fun little songs

Has Mike ever been in a situation where he had been flirted with by someone? Would he notice straight away, or kind of not realize it until way too late like "oh...OH". Knowing he is uncomfortable and uninterested in those kind of things, how does he get out of that situation (if he experienced it).
Oh probably! Usually if he's with davy he'll just point to him like "I think he's the one you want." and just shuffle away. If he's by himself, he just acts oblivious (if he's not already) and kinda just talks his way out of it. Usually with extreme situations while having a blank face and deadpan tone, “I think I left my oven on. I think I left my iron plugged in” or he'll make excuses like "I don't think you wanna date me i snore really loud (he does!!!!!), I don't think you wanna date me im scared of girls, i dont think you wanna date me i never have money"
or he'll just straight up walk away, not even thinking its rude to do so. I feel like thats how he exits a lot of situations where hes not comfortable or amused, by just walking away without a word, not knowing that it makes him come off as rude and dismissive to anyone else who isn't one of his friends, who are more used to his methods of communication and just the way he acts
Usually though he never really catches onto flirting right away. He just figures theyre being really nice. I feel like he just has that kind of behavior normalized in his mind because of micky, who always just acts flirty/flamboyantly affectionate to everyone (interested or not) so he figures theyre just the same as micky!
I think he catches onto it eventually, though, usually with a little help from his friends, especially davy. Then he just feels really weirded out

7 with boblin 😍
things you said while we were driving + bob and linda (pre kids)
Bob likes driving on the highway. Without twists and turns, it’s easy to get lost in the task. This gives him time to dream up new recipes. Three hours into a road trip home from Florida, he’s trying to hold on to five new burger of the day ideas before they drift away.
He sighs, stealing a glance at his wife sleeping in the passenger’s seat. He does like driving, but he’s also starting to get bored. Linda had fallen asleep almost as soon as they hit the road, likely exhausted after a weekend spent being bombarded with her mother’s criticism.
Bob doesn’t understand why she even wanted to go to Florida. Personally, listening to his mother-in-law pick at Linda made him come dangerously close to snapping. She complained about Linda’s new haircut throughout the trip, calling it unflattering. Linda is a pro at grinning and bearing it.
Bob rolls his eyes at the irritating memory. Linda’s haircut is pretty, for one thing. Gloria is probably just jealous. Bob can take it when her insults are aimed at him, but when she targets Linda, who’s never anything but helpful and sweet…he’s just grateful his in-laws live in a different state.
Linda shifts next to him, rolling from one side to the other. Strategically, Bob turns the volume of the radio up ever so slightly. If pressed, he can claim he didn’t know it would be enough to disrupt her sleep.
“Hm? Wha?”
Linda always wakes up frantically, like the room she’s in is on fire. Bob squeezes her shoulder.
“Hey, Lin. You’re awake.”
Her body slackens.
“Oh. Already? Are we home?”
“Nope. Just…driving. So much driving.”
Linda yawns, her arms stretched toward the ceiling. Bob hopes she’s comfortable, immediately feeling guilty for waking her up.
“Road trips are kind of boring without you singing.” He says. “I mean…we can keep taking a break from the singing. For a little while. But I’ve been kind of lonely.”
Linda sticks her bottom lip out.
“Aww!” She coos. “You missed me!”
Her voice is bright, even though she’s just woken up, and Bob can’t fathom how someone would have anything but nice things to say about her. God, it’s hard to pretend he tolerates his mother-in-law.
“I did, Lin. Hi. I’m glad you’re up. You want to pull over for some lunch?”
He laughs as she clasps her hands together, sitting upright to survey the lunch options painted on the row of exit signs. Maybe Bob doesn’t like driving. It’s the company he likes.

Boblin Commission
I wasn't lying when I said on Insta I was gonna put this on my wall soon. @drawthething recently made me the absolute PERFECT Boblin piece which is related to my AU (takes place during the episode "Something Old, Something New, Something Bob Caters For You").
(I'm sorry it's hard to see what the word bubbles say, I wrote the words down with sharpie pretty quickly).

A little detail I loved in "The Amazing Rudy": when Rudy is eating with the Belchers, Gene gives up his usual chair and sits in the folding chair, letting Rudy sit next to Louise.
I was trying to remember any other (non-Thanksgiving) occasions when one of the kids' friends ate with the family and the one I thought of was Tammy in "Sleeping with the Frenemy". Checking a screencap of that, I noticed that Tammy is sitting in the folding chair. No one is giving up their normal chair for Tammy.
So it's not like Bob and Linda force one of the kids to give up their chair for a guest. Gene chose to let Rudy sit in his chair (even though it was Gene's special B- dinner!) Just another cute Gene and Rudy moment in an episode that has a few of them ("love you, bro.")

Bob’s Burgers is one of my favorite shows ever. It’s one of my comfort shows. So often adult animations rely on being crude and offensive to be entertaining. Or they lean heavily on abusive family dynamics. After a time, it becomes tiresome. I’m someone who enjoys the kindness in others, not their cruelty. That’s not a revolutionary thing to say, I know. But a lot of adult animation and it’s fans want that offensive stuff, wants to see families rip each other apart whether that be emotionally or physically. But Bob’s Burgers is different.
For so long adult animation pertained to the bad dad trope. We had the Peter Griffins and the South Park dads, for example. But Bob Belcher is a breath of fresh air. It’s been stated that Bob did not have a good childhood. We do know some of the extent of why it was bad. Bad enough that he feels viscerally uncomfortable with his father’s presence. However, Bob didn’t pull a Hank Hill where he just shut down his emotions. He made the decision to be emotionally present.
Tumblr media
Tina is awkward and deals with an ever-present loneliness. She feels like an outsider in the world. Constantly voicing her feelings and her frustrations that she doesn’t have true friends outside of her siblings. Rather than just brush her aside, Bob is constantly trying to build her confidence. Bob was an awkward kid who didn’t have true friends. He understands and empathizes with Tina. At one point, he tells her that he would have been lucky to have had her as a friend when he was her age. He shows her the kindness that he never got as a kid.
Tumblr media
Gene is a colorful weirdo who dreams big. He’s this bubbly boy who expresses himself however he wants. His passion in life is his very odd and strange music. Bob doesn’t understand it, quite frankly. But rather than react in hostility due to his confusion, Bob looks at his son with wonder. And so many times he tries to reach out to Gene. It works, there are a lot of episodes where they spend time together. Bob, again, doesn’t really understand what Gene does or is interested in, but he tries to. He actively encourages his son’s creativity and loves how strange he is. He’s shows him the acceptance that he needed as a kid.
Tumblr media
Louise is quite different from those around her. She’s not one to just run around and ask to be friends with others. Unlike Tina, she’s fine with this. But she still has insecurities that many of us have. She worries about how others view her. Her arc in the movie is all about that. But, with the help of Linda, Bob is able to reassure Louise. Louise takes Bob’s words to heart. He’s not only her dad, he’s her best friend. They joke and banter with the knowledge that they still love one another. He gave her the companionship that he needed as a kid.
The reason Bob’s Burgers and the Belchers stand out amongst the adult animation field is that it proves something. It proves that you don’t need to be cruel and vicious to succeed. You can have an emphasis on kindness. There were notes that the writers got that the Belchers quote “liked each other too much.” But that’s part of the enjoyment for many of us. It can get exhausting watching shows like American Dad and modern Family Guy where there’s little to no love between the families. Bob’s Burgers is the opposite of those shows. It’s a damn good show and a lot of that has to do with the fact that Bob is a damn good dad.
