However, what I have learned from this course is that I would be able to make my future students feel the same way as I do – that writing is not such a scary thing to do and should not be dreaded. The many readings we have done in this course helped give me ideas of strategies I would like to implement in my own future classes such as the idea of having kids do “scribbles” instead of “journals.” Just this change of name gets students more excited to start writing. Something that we touched upon in class quite often is the idea of free writing. This would also be a great idea for students to write what is on their mind rather than stick to a strict prompt. It would be very beneficial for students who struggle with writing about a certain topic because they would be able to write as much as they can about whatever they choose. I have also discovered that there is so much more to improve on in writing. As great as I think my paper could be, it could be so much better after review and feedback. I have made many revisions to my drafts and yet, there is always more comments on things that I can do better. 

One area of strength that I have discovered about my own writing is my correct usage of writing conventions such as spelling, punctuation, grammar, etc. Of all my assignments, my writing conventions have been criticized the least and have even been praised at some points. Another aid to this strength is the Grammar Teaching Turn presentations that we watched every week. Some rules I already knew but some I needed a refresher on. The Grammar Teaching Turn that I had done with my classmate Bridgette was the split infinitive. This was a concept that I was not too familiar with and noticed was an error that I tended to make in my own writing. Now, I always notice when I use a split infinitive in my formal writing. After the first assignment, I discovered it was so much easier to write assignments after that. Now I had guidelines in my mind of what to write, such as the type of language I should be using and what I want to show in my paper. I feel that I had done a good job on the Letters to the Administrator and Parent assignments because of the language I had chosen to use. For the Letter to the Administrator, I made sure to use technical, academic language. For the Letter to the Parent, I made sure to reuse the language from the Letter to the Administrator in a concise way that did not “dumb down” the content and retained the same meaning. I am proud of how I did on the Letters assignment because they reveal how much I have grown in writing since the Commenting on Teaching and Learning assignment. I had fewer revisions to make because I had fixed my old mistakes and knew exactly what was needed for the assignments.  

One area of growth that I have discovered about my own writing is my use of more detailed, analytical, and specific language. I started off the semester thinking I knew how to write like a teacher. After the first assignment, I quickly learned that that wasn’t the case. As much as I thought my writing was great, it wasn’t. I was told I was “telling” and not “showing.” What this meant was that I was simply listing out events as they happened rather than explaining further using descriptive words to really help the reader picture the scene being played out in front of them. Therefore, I began to give more specific examples in my writing, as well as provide an analysis of the examples. For example, in the Commenting on Teaching and Learning assignment, I wrote that the teacher said the students had great group chemistry. To improve this statement, I showed how the students had great group chemistry by stating how they had worked together well to come up with their spoken word poems through brainstorming and discussion, based on what they had learned and listened to in class. Over the course of the assignments we had done in this semester, I have worked on elaborating more on my points and explaining further what the purpose of my statements was. 

One specific type of writing that I would have liked to see in this class and would have added to my portfolio is some sort of free writing as I mentioned before. I feel like a free write at the end of the semester would demonstrate the new writing skills that I have picked up over time in this course. A free write could be anything, without a prompt, such as a narrative, fictional story, memoir, etc. It would really showcase our creativity as writers while still showing what we have learned about what goes into writing a paper. I particularly love to free write, especially writing my own story with a full list of characters. Writing a story would be a great starter to “showing and not telling” that we have emphasized in class. Another type of writing that I would have liked to see in this class is composing a detailed lesson plan. This lesson plan can be for me as the teacher, or to be shown to the principal. This type of writing will greatly benefit us as future teachers as we learn how and what to write for this essential format that we would always be using throughout our career. I would have also liked to practice more letters to parents, ranging from different topics. One example could be about a student who has behavioral issues. Another could be a response to a belligerent parent, which I would like to know how to respond to using proper and appropriate language. All these examples encourage using our writing skills and relate to our career field.

I’m obsessed with book covers so this is the part I am excited about going through.
