sorry for diary posting so much on main but this is the last one today prommy
#it's in the tags anyway so#SO#i didn't go get my masters. or rlly try for a phd because i felt like i was bad at school right#(because i failed two classes in freshman year and i'd never ever done that before)#(and i failed those because. my meds made it very difficult for me to retain any information/make memories or whatever)#and it was just so WEIRD and i felt so dumb because never in my life had i been bad at school before like that#so that kind of killed my general confidence in academia#so even tho i got into a decent program i just decided to go work instead#(and yes a big part of it is that my current job is awesome and i didn't know if i'd get this kind of opportunity again)#and i kind of just realized#the last year and a half have LITERALLY JUST BEEN SCHOOL#OR WHAT A MASTERS PROGRAM WOULD BE LIKE#sort of. like an engineering masters.#except technically i have come up with new stuff too it's just operational and not research#but i spent the last year and a half learning something completely new that i knew nothing about at all.#and i've been teaching classes while i was learning and taking exams#and my exams went WELL#the last oral exam i had my evaluator told me it was the best one he'd seen#i went to talk to one of my senior instructors recently about the last big class i taught to become certified#to fucking important ass terrifyingly smart people#and he told me i was a model for all new people and i did super well#and then he told me not to tell anyone he said that because he didn't want people to think he was a softie#(he's a gigantic softie. i can't believe people are scared of him)#when he gets mad he expresses it and honestly he's valid for it sometimes people are dumb bitches and need to hear it. but apparently some#oh that's a tangent. anyways. if i can do this i can probably go back to academia right...#and jesus fuck girl it doesn't have to be mit. it can be a normal school#i can Lower my Standards because they aren't about to lower theirs. haha but what if.... anyways im gonna stick with the same major as my#bachelors cause i did actually enjoy it. and aerospace is boring in comparison. and i wanna figure out how to keep people alive both in#space AND under the ocean. at pressures we were never meant to survive at! Now THAT' would be fun.

Dear Misty,
@mercedeslackeyblog - please print this for her in the hospital! I want her to know we all love her and are rooting for her.
You have been one of the icons in my life for as long as I’ve been reading. Seriously. I picked up “Arrows of the Queen” when I was twelve and fell dizzyingly in love. So in love, in fact, that my father bought me the set of them leatherbound. It was one of the last things he ever bought me. They sit on my shelf with me wherever I move to (and I have moved a lot). They are the epitome of my childhood.
How do I even begin to explain what you have meant to me? I wrote you a fan letter in my teens, but I don’t think it ever reached you. Websites were less...polished then. I tried to find a copy to see what I had said, but I don’t have it anymore, so I’ll write this from scratch.
First off, for someone growing up in the 90s, sexuality was a difficult topic. My father was Catholic about it. My mother was liberal about acceptance, but not very liberal about giving us the tools to recognize it. I didn’t really accept the fact I was bi until I was 26 (last year). It was an embarrassing realization, because I had always been conditioned to already think women were interesting and cool and beautiful. But I honestly and truly believe one of the reasons I grew up being so tolerant of sexuality wasn’t my mother’s liberal attitude, but because of the fantasy I read, which didn’t use sexuality as a dramatic plot device. Your books, especially, in depicting queer relationships, poly relationships, and interracial relationships in such an ordinary light, in such a non-complaining, non special, non interesting way (as it should be!) that to me it became ordinary. I didn’t understand the big fuss when people started coming out in eighth and ninth grade. Well of course Brett could like boys. Silverfox did, and he’s one of my favorite characters, a fictional hero who I use to help combat my own anxiety and work through impossible situations. I didn’t understand why liking girls was so shocking. Keren was the impossibly cooler most perfect big sister/coach figure. I was into horse back riding until 16 (when, unfortunately, my horse died). Keren has a lot of the surly riding instructor in her, and it was a far more interesting aspect of her personality than her relationship with Sheri. Keren had even assured Sheri she would have been welcome as their third. As a kid, it hadn’t even occurred to me to make an argument against it. I - Talia’s age - agreed with her. When life gives you child brides and weird cult compounds, it’s better to find love where you can. Genuine love. Regardless of anything else.
Secondly, it was a book I needed when I didn’t know I would need it. A lot of fiction - especially geared at children - skates lightly over topics of depression, anxiety, and loss. Don’t get me wrong, I love Harry Potter with my soul. But even at the age I read it I felt the shallowness of their reactions when Sirius died. I felt my own reaction even crying while reading the book to be stronger. It would infuriate me that the next book they sort of conveniently forgot it had only been a few weeks/months. That Harry was “sad but manageable.” For context, my dad contracted Lou Gehrig’s disease at 44. They told him he had likely already had the disease 10 years. He lost everything; his temper, his dignity, bits of his mind at a time. Any filter between his brain and his mouth. His fine motor control, like holding a spoon. His major motor control, like being able to stand up. He was in a powerchair within the year. As the oldest daughter, it was expected that I would help turn him, change his catheter, and answer his shrill screams in the night. I was fourteen years old.
Dad and I were inseparable. Father-daughter relationship compounded by the fact he had, in essence with a flexible work schedule, been a stay at home dad. He had been my primary caregiver, my confidante, my chef, my advisor, my everything. And now I was his punching bag as he lost a bit of himself at a time. “My friend, who’s a psychiatrist,” Mom always said it this way, to make sure we knew she wasn’t so weak as to need therapy. A challenge to dare us to say we did. “He says that he’s hardest on you, because he’s most assured of your love. That he can abuse you and scream at you and curse at you because he knows you’ll go back the next day. A moth to a flame.” And me staring blankly at her: “Of course I will.” Because even if it was my worst fear - it was, always had been - even if it hurt worse than I could have ever imagined - his death would have broken me, but only in half. His suffering crushed the pieces of me into dust and left me a gaping black thing sucking in the world - “I love him too much to miss a moment of this.” Even if every minute - every possible second - was me reminding myself I had to breathe and feeling my lungs on fire, my head was on the edge of a migraine, it was impossible to interact, but I had to. I had to smile. To go to high school. To turn in assignments on time regardless of the cost between going to bed at 2 and hearing him scream at 3.
Your books, though, weren’t fake. I held onto them with the assurance of that one quote: life is the scream into the void; art is the answer you are not alone. I held onto the depression and grief and trauma of your characters and felt sane. If I hadn’t, I might have thought I was losing my mind. I was, of course. And I had been conditioned Catholically to think of mental health as a weakness, a secret shame. I had been told by my mother psychologists and medication were wonderful advancements for those people; sick people. Sick in their mind, she would say smugly. Her adamant assurance was: “We have to go on like usual. We can’t let people know we’re struggling.” And so we did. Social events. Big smiles. Sleepovers (somewhere else, my friends explained, your dad bums us out). People didn’t find out he was dying until prom of my senior year. I was on the receiving end of a lot of horror from teachers (why didn’t you tell us? Ask for an extension?) I had to be normal I wanted to tell them, but I didn’t even know how to begin to explain.
Once a pediatrician told my mom I was deeply angry and tired; I was losing my father. I was fifteen. I needed to see a counselor. My mom went ballistic in a public waiting room. She aggressively turned to me and asked if this was true? There was no chance, of course, for me to disagree. I didn’t even want to. My loyalty to my family was (is) so strong that seeing anyone upset her so badly had put my back against the wall and made me bare my teeth. I reflect a lot on it now; how poorly that doctor handled it, the way she would have bungled it much worse if it had been physical abuse. You never confront the person in front of the child. Never don’t have a safety plan in place.
“She said you were so young,” my mother snarled on the way home. “When we both know you haven’t been young in years. I watched you. Watched you go from fifteen to twenty in months instead of years. Don’t you think?”
I could only nod, and when I covered my mouth, fingertips touched wet skin. I hadn’t been young in years.
Darkwind was someone I identified heavily with. Someone who changed his name, cut his hair, let his grief consume him. Someone who shied away from Silverfox’s help. Someone who was glad when his father still got some. The day of my dad’s funeral, I cut off my hair. I was 19. The nightmare had lasted five years. I had stayed home to go to a local college so I could keep living at home, keep shielding my younger sisters, keep driving them to school and viola practice and karate. I had to give up my extracurriculars early on (and lie, of course, on my applications). It was actually a disaster at the hair cutting place (not important, but the lady called the police thinking I had stolen her cell phone which had fallen behind some tools). I went home. My mother took one look at my hair and told me it made my face look fat. “It’s for Dad,” I said steadily. In my mind, I was howling like Darkwind. I wondered if I could break my name into grief and sorrow, but it was too hard to think of the name I might have been, since the person I had been was as dead as dad was.
On days where my two younger sisters were scared and confused (the youngest was 13 when he died), I read them The Fairy Godmother and One Good Knight. They liked that one especially well. I went on to absorb almost all of your works (I think it’s impossible though, to be honest. There are just so many that either you’re a witch or I keep reading the same ones again and thinking I’ve never read them. For instance, I have a Bard Song on my nightstand right now from a bargain bin. Never read it before. Recently read Four and Twenty Blackbirds). Of course, my favorite series was Valdemar. I know all those characters the best, having reread most of them over again several times. I liked Elemental Masters, 700 Kingdoms (some). I was sad that the Beauty & the Beast stories in both weren’t my favorites (The Fire Rose, Beauty and the Werewolf, since it’s my favorite Disney film (but as your stories follow the traditional fairytale a little closer, and that tale is a bit gross, I understand). I think my favorites were The Firebird, Phoenix and Ashes, Reserved from the Cat, The Wizard of London).
Honestly, I may be a tiny minority, but I ADORE Joust. I was sad there weren’t more of them. I spent much of the time I read them inventing my own dragon egg, my own falling through time and space. My own female girl rider takes on the Team without being just a sidekick who talked to animals. It is hard to recommend or talk about it without people laughing, and I appreciate it IS an incredibly hard-core nerd fantasy genre (ancient Egypt, jousting, dragons). It feels a lot like Anne McCaffery crossed with a Naomi Novik story (since Temeraire and Napoleonic Wars are equally hard-core nerd stories. I was lucky to stumble on that line recently - I feel like there’s not enough of the true blue 80s/90s fantasy voice anymore. Sometimes it feels all too dark and plot driven, lacking the characters and slice of life that your works have nestled in my heart, places like the Palace Compound that I know as well as I knew my middle and high schools. A place as real to me as they are, including my own room. My own Companion. My own Heraldic Whites when I turned 18 and took the leatherbound books from my father in an eyestinging rush of love.
Even now when I was looking up a list of your work, I’m amazed and appalled to see I haven’t caught any of your works since 2009 or so. HOW MANY ARE THERE 100? 200? I thought there were 70 something, but no, you’ve far outstripped yourself. I usually pick up the books in secondhand shops. I’ll go straight for “L” and then just tip all of them into my arms if I haven’t read them. It’s one of my favorite rainyday activities. I noticed you even have a book out this year! CRAP! It should not be POSSIBLE you can write faster than I can read! I’m 27 and I still read a lot of the books that came out when I was born or in diapers. Sometimes I wonder which books you’ve written are your favorites. If there are books you’ve written you skim through like “hmmm I don’t even remember this” and read it with the same laughing intensity as the rest of us, resting your thumb on “oh yes, this was when I was...”
Anyway. I know this letter is long. You’ve been a saint for even getting this far. So let me say this. When I think of the BEST writers of fantasy in the 20th and 21st centuries, your name is among the greats. I’ll say something like: Anne McCaffery’s Dragonriders of Pern; Orson Scott Card’s Ender’s Game; Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time; Mercedes Lackey’s Valdemar...and EVERYTHING ELSE. A lot more people know the names of George R.R. Martin, of J.K. Rowling, of Neil Gaiman. But none of them have put out the solid, unending stream of work that literally POPULATES what most people consider “fantasy.” Your ideas, your work, your world-building influence television, influence Dungeons & Dragons, other works. You are a Giant in your field, and even if you don’t feel it, you have laid the groundwork for an entire generation to lay themselves reverently on the altar of your sacrifice, your reflection of relationships, and taught young girls like me what it was to embrace themselves, in all shapes - black tar and bi pride.
I know you probably tire of hearing this, but I want to be an author. And I’m a good writer. I don’t say it boastfully. I say it as something I’ve always heard, from teachers and friends and magazines. But mom said being an author was like being an actor - a pipe dream, a thing to do “on the side” and “as a hobby.” And it is a hobby of mine, for now. I did the Responsible Thing and became a lawyer. It was quite horrible. But I did it. For Dad, you know. Legacy and all that.
But don’t you DARE die before I’m published. I’m not talking about the hospital right now. I’m talking about choking on a banana; slipping on the sidewalk; getting mobbed by adoring fans. It is literally my bucketlist to publish a book, to meet you, to dedicate the book to a woman who I’ve never met, who I’ve never known, but who had influenced and impacted my life SO profoundly I consider her characters as pieces of myself. Her worlds as places of safety when I’m sad. The helping hand she held out to a twelve year old girl, and fifteen years later the one I’m still gripping tightly.
YOU are one of the best women in my life, and one of the best role models I’ve ever known. Even if we’ve never met, knowing that you could be a deeply nerdy human who loves horses and magic and reading every day and still be “successful” when the world outside told me I dressed wrong and looked wrong and felt wrong. That I needed to pick up a magazine, or watch sitcoms, or generally stop making them feel pitying and uncomfortable because of the things I liked. You made me proud to be a feminist, an ally, a writer, a dreamer, a reader, and maybe only lately of my sexuality, but still growing and going forward.
So, here’s lots of love and adoration and gratitude flooding your way from:
One herald (whose companion was someone she knew in real life reincarnated too early, obviously grove born, with mindspeech, with magic, of course and lifebonded with a Kestra'chern. Predictably, I fought the lifebonding every step of the way, and consider him a great nuisance).
One dragon rider in the jousting wars (with a dragon named Altaira (high flying) who is such a deep dark color she seems black but ripples cobalt and violet).
One grateful apprentice to the Fairy Godmother, who herself was saved from one of a great many plots by the impetus of her father’s illness/death.
And of course, from one persnickety lawyer in DC, drowning in student loan debt and of course too many books, one cat too pretty to be a boy named Gandalf, and his Greyhounds (yes, two, who are very lowkey and I think you would like. They’re like large sleeping cats more than dogs, but very friendly with horses). Of course I named the cat Gandalf simply for the introduction of “Gandalf, the Greyhounds.” Originally I wanted to name a dog “Gandalf...the Greyhound” but because of who I am I went to the shelter and asked for the dog least likely to get adopted and sort of came out with a bonded pair and then it seemed they needed twin names so they’re named Fred & George after Harry Potter.
But rambling aside, I adore you. I adore your books. I adore the world you’ve given freely for us to play in. Get well soon, and lots, lots, and lots of love. I’ll be playing in my worlds today especially a lot, thinking of you.
All the best,
Kaylee

Alone (Therapists & Children)
A couple years ago, I met someone who meant the world to me. His name was Robin. We sat in that room lit with bright orange lights. Steps ran down to the center where a piano sat. A projector sat atop the ceiling, pointing towards a white sheet just behind the piano. Off to the side sat a shelf with a stereo on top. The walls were dark, brown and obviously made of wood. Squares of foam sat a few inches apart across the walls. The entrance sat off to the side, on the other was a closet that stored all of the chairs. I sat at the back with all of the Mezzo’s. Ms. Curtis had trouble gauging what my range was. We were doing these team building exercises, to find our voices and sync up. When she got to the Mezzo’s she was very disappointed when she found out I had never sang a word in that room. She gave me Mezzo because of my speaking voice. So I sang throughout that hour with everyone who was just now realizing I existed.
I didn’t sync well with the Alto’s because my voice was a little too high. Finally, she decided I was a Mezzo Soprano, so she grabbed a random Baritone Bass off the shelf to start the usual exercise. He sat down and it was the first time I was ever interested in a boy. He had big brown eyes, messy red curls on his head, all styled forward. He always looked so cool in those blue, slim fit jeans, slip-on Vans, some short sleeved button up shirt. His face wasn’t hard, it was soft but defined. We connected after the teacher found out we both hadn’t sang a word in that room. What started out as a team building exercise turned into another search for this boy’s proper range. She told me to sit back down and—as she put it—“Just, wait until we’re done.”
When it was all said and done, the bell rang. It was the last hour of the day. Afterward we properly met after school. He walked me to the bank my aunt worked at, our conversation was easy enough. He took me out. It was the first time I wore a dress since I was four. I met his friends, they became my friends. They bought me an Xbox. This boy and I had sex, it was my first time. Then senior year happened. Texting everyday turned into a few texts throughout the evening. Weekends turned into a few texts in either the afternoon or the evening. All of the sudden, in October, he announced he was moving to California to be with his mom and dad. He stopped coming to school. He stopped talking to me. He stopped talking to his friends. Or at least I thought. I remember jumping online, seeing my brother on, he was talking to someone, I could hear him. I thought it was everyone else. It was Robin, the boy I was seeing.
The next day, it felt like everyone was staring at me. My stomach felt hollow, my heart ached, I felt tired, hungover. I floated through the day, I slept in my history class. My friends (his friends) tried talking to me at lunch, but I couldn’t pay attention. I complained about an upset stomach and called Brielle. Her and her girlfriend picked me up. My room felt so big and empty. The white bumpy walls, the dark brown floors, the glass desk in the corner, the TV just above my dresser in front of my bed. My bed’s white blanket, my tan pillowcases. Everything just looked bland and lifeless. I ignored my brother through the rest of the week. He didn’t do anything wrong, though, he just thought I was still talking to Robin, he didn’t know, no one knew he ignored me like that.
Today, my heart swelled to the size of a grapefruit. My lungs felt punctured. My chest felt like a cinderblock laid atop of it. I sat in the bathroom heaving, trying to catch my breath. No one heard me, Asha went home for the weekend, the girls on the other side went home as well. The ringing in my ears became louder. A harsh pressure pressed onto my sinus’, tears came out of my eyes. It felt like pins kept stabbing my back and across my shoulders. I laid down on my side, curling up into a ball.
“Jude’s not the same.” I kept groaning through my heavy sobs.
Jude went home to Lincoln, to see their family, their siblings. Apparently their brother had a kid recently. Jude left on Thursday, they haven’t texted me back. It’s Saturday.
My brain kept bringing up terrible thoughts, the more I ignored them the louder they got.
  ‘Jude’s done with you.’
  ‘Jude’s tired of you.’
  ‘Jude’s bored of you.’
‘Jude knew you were irritating the day you bitched about lying to your instructor.’
  “No, they’re just busy.”
  “No, they’re just busy.”
  “No, they’re just busy.”
“No, Jude didn’t care, they really just wanted me to move past it.”
‘Jude’s just another Robin. For good reason.’
‘Jude should move past you if this is how you react to a couple days of silence.’
‘Maybe your mom knew how much of a wreck you are, maybe that’s why she left you.’
I got off the bathroom floor, I walked into my room, my eyes stung, my back hurt, my stomach hurt. I opened my drawer, finding that pill bottle. “Take one(1) as needed”. I dropped two tablets into my hand, stuffing them into my mouth. I grab my bottle of water, washing the pills down into my stomach. I stumble back, chest still on fire, thoughts still racing. I curl up onto my bed. I want my aunty.
“Jude’s memo, September Twenty-Eighth.
‘Eggs, milk, diet soda, Gatorade and a gift for this cute girl I met at school.’ That’s my list for today’s outing. It’s a relatively humid day, my hair feels all flat and my face feels like a cheeseburger. My armpits are kinda yeasty and I don’t care, nothing’s gonna stop me from wearing a tank top today. Anastasia carries my sweater so if those clouds man up and actually do something, I got something to cover up with. Also, I need to pay my phone bill. It’s prepaid, thank god, so no late fees.
I started making these after mom died, our families never been the same. But my brother’s kid being born has done the impossible. I’m driving down to Lincoln to meet up with my sister and we’re gonna go see his beautiful little family. We’re gonna lay our mom to rest, properly this time. When it happened, my siblings and I couldn’t bear to be around each other, we all just saw our mom in each other I guess. Each other. Us. It still really hasn’t hit me that we’re all gonna be in the same room together again. It seems so far away that I’m wondering what Amber might like from Lincoln, what can I find her that she’ll get excited about. Me,
Jaime and Judith are gonna be in a room again but all I can think of is my stupid crush. She’s not stupid, the act of thinking about her over this momentous occasion for the Kent family is strange and dumb.
I don’t know... Amber. She might just be a crush, just a curiosity for the school year, I mean, I’m not even sure if I like graphic design. I like doodling, I like making things, but advertising? Is that me? Maybe Amber is just someone to distract me from those fucking questions, but at the same time, her face keeps popping into my head, I can hear her voice if I just imagine it, I don’t know. She’s much, uh, ‘looser’ these days. She doesn’t seem so tense, so distant. I’ve been sitting next to her in Digital Layout One for the entire year so far, this week was the first time I saw her usually milky face turn colored, splashes of pinks on her cheeks, her lips seem, I don’t know how to describe it, but she seems like there’s just more life to her. Her shoulders slump more, her legs don’t bounce like crazy, her hair sits behind her ears more, she takes off that big ass sweater she’s been wearing. She replaced it with a much more comfortable cardigan. She just seems healthier. Probably because a friend sits next to her. But how ethical is it? I mean, this only started because I have a crush on her. Is this okay? Is it okay to pursue her with the slightest expectation that I might get some coochie at the end of this? The answer is probably no, especially given for the fact that I know next to nothing about her, her past, her wants and her needs. I mean, maybe it’s too early to judge things, perhaps I should slow down this thought of not knowing her well enough, the ethics and just have fun. She likes me well enough, I think. We laugh a lot, she shares her sense of humor with me. I mean, she made a sex joke earlier this week, and it was a fucking cute one at that! Jesus, what do I do? I want McDonald’s, there’s one in Missouri Valley, I’m gonna check it out, give’em a visit, see how those nuggets have been. Does Amber like McDonald’s, I mean we got Chipotle and Taco Bell, she must like McDonald’s. Or maybe she’s just too polite to ask, like I say I want Chipotle and she just goes with it. Maybe these questions are best suited to ask her and not the woman who’s gonna listen to this with me on Monday, Hi Jamie! What do I do? What would my mom say? She’d probably tell me just follow my heart because she really had nothing else to add, she always thought me being wholly queer meant she couldn’t give me adequate advice, but that’s not true, when she did give me advice, it was always fucking good, it was exactly what I needed to hear, even if I didn’t want to hear it. I know examples would be better, but, this recording is getting a little long. My mind is a bit wild today. From meeting Amber, to my brother and his girlfriend finally popping that kid out, getting to see my sister Judith after four fucking years. Maybe the reality of seeing everyone is actually hitting me, maybe I am really nervous and I’m just trying to use Amber as a shield from all of this.”

Nick 28/100 “I was born and raised in Santa Monica.” Did you go to SaMo [Santa Monica High School]? “Yeah. I went to Grant Elementary, John Adams Middle School, and Santa Monica High School. The full Malibu Unified School District curriculum.” Isn't SaMo known for celebrities attending their high school? “Robert Downey Jr., Charlie Sheen. When we went there Mel Gibson’s twin kids went there for like half a semester and the rumor was that they were sent there as punishment. They’re like, ‘Here’s some public school for ya.’ I didn’t even know they were there when it happened. Actually Santa Monica is one of the largest populated high schools. I think there’s like two thousand students on campus at all time, which is unheard of, you know. Venice High was like the second, like 1,500, and then there’s like Palisades and Malibu High. Those were the Northsiders,” chuckles Nick. What was it like growing up in Santa Monica? “Santa Monica, you know you hear like, quiet, friendly beach town, it is not friendly or quiet by any means. It is such a small city that has like, I mean like, gangs. There like five gangs in a five mile radius. Your Graveyard Crips, which are right across the street from Santa Monica College, your SM 13, basic Santa Monica thirteen gangbangers, Venice Shortline Crips, you know those three gangs, it was crazy. There was like murders all the time, and by senior year homies were gettin’ shot and like dyin’ and like holding services for these fools. Our football team, we never had a good football team because we were all a bunch of gangsters and we could never finish practice on time, and we never showed up, and you know when we did show up to play they wouldn’t play us ‘cause we’re a bunch of assholes. So it’s crazy, like Santa Monica was such a diverse group of just like beach kids and thugs, and just everything you can think of, it’s crazy.” So where in Santa Monica did you grow up? “Twenty-third and Ocean Park. Man I remembered my mom payed about $650 a month in rent for a single standing unit house, you know a two bedroom, one bathroom, it was awesome, and I was looking recently in the neighborhood, it’s a twenty-seven ($2,700) and over month place,” says Nick laughing. $650 a month in Santa Monica? “Yeah. Yeah it was unbelievable. It was the best, and Santa Monica is cool, lot of side streets and then alleyways everywhere so we can always just get to anywhere we needed to get then through an alleyway.” So where was a go to spot in high school? What did you do for fun? “Well, there were go to spots, like I was riding the bus in like fourth grade, that’s when I started riding the bus, it was fifty cents to ride the bus, so the Santa Monica bus line took us everywhere. So there was always 3rd Street Promenade and Santa Monica Pier. The 3rd Street Promenade was like the spot throughout middle school and high school, and you know they’re broken up in those blocks before they did all those renovations. The third block was called the ‘Promenade Rats,’ that’s where all the Promenade Rats would hang out, literally because the kids would have rats hanging on their shoulders. We wanted to be like those kids so we’d go hang out with them and smoke, and sneak into theaters and shit.” I thought they would be called Promenade Rats because they were rocking a rat tail [hairstyle], like back in the 90’s. “Oh, yeah the rat tail!” laughs Nick. “No, it’s because they had an actual rat tail hangin’ off their shoulder from a rat.” Was the 3rd Street Promenade as built up as it is now? “No, no. They put in those statues of the dinosaurs and stuff, and the fountains, so that brought a lot of attention so people would crowd around the fountains, so it wasn’t like really cool to hang out there and be a punk anymore. The Santa Monica Pier they had torn down all the old shit that we loved and put in a rollercoaster and a huge ferris wheel, so that kinda killed that. We stopped going there. The beach man, it was tough ‘cause you get on the bus in West LA because everyone was using their grandparents address so they can go to SaMo High with the rest of their friends, so we were one of those families that would use my grandma’s address, livin’ in West LA, taking the bus there, and man it was so hard to get off the bus when you can just sit on for two more stops and be at the beach and just chill at the ocean all day, you know. It was the best place. So it was tough, you know you’d be like, ‘We’ll go back second period. Ah, crap. We’ll go back third period. Oh, well, no point of going back now.’ That was always tricky.” How do you feel when you go to Santa Monica now? “It’s changed,” laughs Nick. “It’s all changed. Even in the last like, when I was working in Santa Monica like ten years ago, it changed so much just from then, you know. They put in that new Gold Line train, so just every couple intersections, just massive train construction for a bridge or stairway to get to the bridge.” Do you feel it has changed for the better or worse? “Umm. It’s hard to say, you know. It’s not the old Santa Monica, Old Santa Monica was chill. I guess in the sense that no one can afford to live there anymore, that’s not for the better.” Los Angeles is known for many things, one of which is the Entertainment Industry, and it is a well know fact that many individuals in the industry are not originally from Los Angeles, and is somewhat rare to find someone that is a Los Angeles native. What’s a big misconception or stereotype that many people have about Los Angeles or Angelenos? “The stereotypical thing would be something you see on Saturday Night Live. How people talk about how many highways it takes to get around the corner here and there, and we’re all laid back. I took a cross country trip with my buddies when I was seventeen, and it’s a whole different universe in between LA and New York, you know, and that’s what runs this country. And so I would say it’s easy to feel like once you’re here, born and raised here [Los Angeles] you feel like, ‘Well this is how it is everywhere.’ You can’t help but think like, ‘This must be how it is everywhere else,’ and that trip really taught me that, no it’s not. That we are a collection of the world’s top entrepreneurs, you know everyone comes here for a reason and that’s to get a great gig. There’s definitely opportunity out here and so I don’t blame people for flooding, but to answer your question, ‘A misconception?’ Yeah we’re not all laid back surfers that are doing yoga, or like hang gliding from the mountain tops, it’s a struggle out here. It’s not easy-going, never is, never has been.” So what did you do after you graduated high school? “I was wrapping up my pilot license. I got into flying real young, that was something my grandparents thought would be like a really good umm, school wasn’t my biggest thing, you know I stuck it out and finished it, but there was a little college money set aside and we kinda pow wowed and thought flight school could really hone some skills and put to use, and maybe become a private pilot or a commercial airline pilot. So I did that at the same time through high school and I think I got started too young, I got tired of just flying around by myself, or when I did have my private just the idea of flying one person to the next place, I just became a chauffeur to the skies.” What were you flying, a Cessna? “Yeah, Cessna, and later I moved onto multi-engine and got a little practice in the turbine engines and stuff and that’s when I realized this really isn’t what I want to do. We spent like fifteen grand in college fund to get there, and then the big kick in the pants was they had changed the rules to where you had to have a BA (Bachelor’s degree) to be a commercial pilot and that was the whole point was you didn’t need that. You needed a high school education and you needed a pilot license, and then hours, and so that changed. I could have been an instructor you know it’s just more of the same. Logging hours while someone is paying you to fly the plane. You know that tanked and I started working, making good money working. I graduated early, I graduated in February as opposed to June. I discovered summer school and college credits and everything to just graduate as soon as possible and start working. I moved out when I was seventeen with my buddies, you know we got a killer place together, threw the best parties, everyone worked, we just had to choke together like $1,200 dollars a month rent between the three of us. So that kept going for, you know we moved from that place to another place to Hermosa Beach, and that place was insane!” Nick lets out a laugh. “That was party central. We would bring the whole pier back to the house with us.” What season of your life are you in? “I think I feel like I’m definitely learning a lesson. I’m growing and learning from mishandling a lot of funds over the past ten years. Definitely that’s bitin’ me in the ass, so I’m like, you know kinda just like...I’m adjusting. Like to quote Eminem in 8 mile, ‘You know when you gotta stop tryin’ to live up here and start livin’ down here?’” Nick laughs. “You know things like that. I think, umm, desperation creates innovation and here I am with the Flick Nelix, and realizing this is something within my means that I can fully wrap my mind around from the beginning to end and make it happen. So that’s where I’m at. I’m starting to realize that I gotta get my shit together soon ‘cause or else it’s tough livin’ out here. West of the 405 is not for the weak.” Did you always have a passion for bikes? “Yeah, growing up that was, man, until I discovered chicks and pot it was all about just anything action sports related. Just cycling, skating, snowboarding, surfing, volleyball, just everything, so I’m tryin’ to dial back to those roots ‘cause it’s tough sometimes to find a passion and for me it’s being creative. Any opportunity to be creative, let alone get paid to be creative is the dream. So if I can sit around and conceptualize a bike and take it from a vision to a physical being, it’s very gratifying, and I get really pumped and excited about it, and not a lot does that these days.” So why vintage bikes? “Because I know that there’s a growing market in it and everything comes around full circle every so decades and I caught wind of this 70’s wave of old racing bikes, English road bikes, and it all started when I started restoring my uncle’s bike just for fun, just to get back into a hobby and then just going through the process and learning more about that process, and about that era of bicycling and it just ramped up from there. I saw how much potential there was and how little people were doing. Any opportunity to be creative is the direction I’m heading.” How did you start Flick Nelix? “Aside from tryin’ to open up my passion for cycling, I’ve recently learned how avid a road cyclist my uncle was, and I remember him showin’ up to the house to family events, and he’d ridden his bike from God knows where and he’d show up all broken and bruised and bleeding ‘cause some asshole ran him off the road, or you know he took a spill, or he was with a pot of bikes and got wrapped up, and I started remembering these things and I was just like, ‘Man, we owe it to him.’ He had passed away back in like 2002, 2003, so his bike had been sitting around in storage for that long [fourteen years] and I just remembered seeing this relic of a bicycle, and obviously I’ve been watching some shows on restoration and stuff like that and I figured ‘I love this, this is fascinating, I wish I had something to restore.’ Sure enough, there it is, it’s been waiting for me the whole time, so I gave it a go. I look into the best way to restore an old 70’s English road bike, and the way to go is you’re gonna paint it, you gotta powder coat it so it will never rust again, find the original decals, the original components, make sure everything is polished nice and bright and clean, and once I got to that point I realized that when it’s finished and it’s beautiful, it’s gettin’ tons of compliments, I was takin’ pictures of it, gettin’ a good response online, and I started to realize that there was money in this to be made. It’s not a whole lot of money but you know if I can make a couple hundred bucks here and there, a couple thousand bucks at the end of the month, it makes sense to me.” What was the story behind the name, Flick Nelix? “My name is Nick Felix and an old co-worker buddy of mine out of sheer boredom started calling me Flick Nelix, which is just a simple twist of the lettering of the name. I guess it stuck with me and then years later, you know I’m just shootin’ the shit, havin’ drinks, good friends and thinkin’ about, you know, ‘It’d be cool to get a cycling company going, maybe sponsor some riders, or start machining custom parts for bikes,’ and I asked my buddy, ‘What do you think about Flick Nelix?’ and he’s like, ‘It sounds like a trick, like a skateboard trick, like a double helix, a Flick Nelix.’ And we just got hyped on it and it stuck with me ever since, and when I did that restoration I kinda thought how I can brand it, you know. I’m not just flippin’ bikes like a Craigslist bike flipper, you know I’m restoring them to their former glory. The bike is worthy of a restoration process. Yeah, that’s how the name came about.” If you could go back in time ten, fifteen years, what is the single greatest piece of advice would you give yourself? “Dude, it’s so not exciting at all. It’d be, ‘Save for taxes.’” Nick laughs and adds, “But that was a unique situation that I was in that just fell on me like a pile of bricks, you know. Let see. I wouldn’t change any life decisions, I wouldn’t change any of my friendships, you know, I would…” Nick takes a moment of reflection. “You know it’s not fun stuff, it’s depressing, it be like maybe go back and help someone who wasn’t doing as well that didn’t make it as long as I did. Someone that may have taken their life, you know stuff like that I could have maybe have helped, things like that. Nothing really cool, like ‘Ah, man, I wished I never hooked up with that one crazy chick or something. I’ve got an answer that I would change. I would tell myself to never stress. Never ever stress. Especially over something you can’t fix or change on the spot, never stress. That’s what I would tell myself. Don’t worry, be happy, everything is going to be okay, you know.” What do you want to do before you die? “Getting in more traveling, as much traveling as possible. It’s all about traveling for me. This will always be home and it’s never going anywhere, so it’s okay to bail out of your hometown for a couple of years if you have to.” What do you like about traveling? “I guess the new experiences. I like just getting lost without ever having to worry about getting lost. I learn that when I drive, you know my worst is when I’m driving and I get like rage and then I start getting mixed up on directions and where I’m going, but when you’re on a road trip and you’re just tryin’ to get from, say like from here to New York, you can’t mess up as long as you’re just going one direction, you cannot go wrong. I remember that feeling on that trip I took when I was seventeen, I remember that feeling, never worrying about where we ended up or how much time is left in the day or whatever because it didn’t matter, and that’s what it’s like when you’re traveling.” What is your best friend going to say at your funeral? “I hear it to this day man, just fun to be around, and ahh, I don’t know, and I get that from my parents, I get that from my grandparents. We’re all just fun, happy going people. We rather laugh than bicker, you know, that’s just the way it is. In my family it was easier to be a friend than a parent figure, a grandfather figure, a grandma figure, let’s all just have fun together and not take things too serious.” 72 stories to go.

Hakuouki Shadows of the Past  Pt 2
Haruka had awoken the next morning with purpose.
Unsure of whether the team captain just wanted to talk or practice she made sure to dress in athletic wear. She was waiting on the front porch of her house when Samantha rolled up in her car. Haruka then bounded down her front lawn and tossed herself in the passenger seat.
“Someone’s eager for swim practice,” Samantha chuckled. She was already in her suit and jammers with a jacket thrown over top. Haruka grinned eager to share her plans for the day.
“Team captain messaged me last night and wants to talk to me. I bet he’s going to thank me for all my work, heck maybe we get to be co-captains.” Haruka excitedly shared with her friends who squealed excitedly. They got to the community pool soon enough.
Samantha carried in a white board that was scribbled in full colour coordinated detail what they were to do. She set it up on the deck over what had become their unofficial designated lane. The two girls jumped in and shrieked at the cool temperature of the pool before getting started on their training.
Haruka was still trying to perfect her strokes so that her form was just as spotless as Samantha’s. She’d given up long ago on trying to beat her friend in a race. She figured focusing on technique first would mean less disappointment. If swimming all summer taught Haruka anything it was that all her experience in sparring had prepared her for was decent endurance in sprint like activities. Samantha on the other hand could probably swim all day without a break while keeping a decent pace.
When they were done they rested together in the sauna. Sweat covered and exhausted.
“You’re front crawl is really good. Breast stroke is still a bit wonky and I really don’t get what’s going on with your back crawl,” Samantha told Haruka as she leaned her head on Haru’s shoulder. She giggled, “Really, I don’t get what’s up with it. If I did I’d tell you how to fix it. Have you been keeping track of your sprints? I think your twenty five meters have gotten better.”
“Not as good as yours,” Haruka groaned.
“Yeah but just like how you’ve been doing Karate forever I’ve been doing swimming forever. It’d be an embarrassment if you showed me up,” Samantha laughed, “I’m glad we get all this training in together. I’m thinking next year to get a scholarship through swimming.”
“You’ll get it no problem,” Haurka assured her, “You swim like you’re the Little Mermaid on steroids. You and your glamazon legs.”
Samantha giggled and the two red faced girls slipped out of the sauna before they overheated. The pool deck seemed freezing and they rushed to the showers to warm up again. They showered and changed and Samantha helpfully dropped Haruka off at the bistro she was meeting her team captain at.
She rested outside the bistro waiting for her team captain to appear. They’d been training for almost the same amount of time despite him being a few years older. Since Haru managed to pass through the belt ranks faster than Seth, it was more often than not that Ethan and Haruka found themselves in the same division at tournaments. The two of them had been competing since a young age. If anything Ethan was the closest thing Haruka had to a rival.
Ethan had gotten a little distant recently. Haruka attributed that to stress about starting University. He didn’t talk to her outside of class anymore, and would occasionally slight her during classes as well. Since his father was one of the most senior ranking instructors he’d gotten far more leeway with his behaviour than her. Something he’d really only begun to take advantage of recently.
Haruka was flipping through her phone when someone tapped her shoe. She glanced up to see Ethan giving her a curt nod of his head. She smiled and the two of them slipped into the restaurant. They got a table and each ordered something light to snack on.
Ethan reached into his bag and withdrew his laptop. Setting it between Haruka and himself. He opened it and began typing away on it while Haruka sat in her chair fidgeting awkwardly unsure of what to do. She prodded at the pastry she’d ordered and sipped on her hot chocolate. The two of them sat in silence while Ethan worked away on something on his laptop, the screen reflected in his glasses. Haruka began getting increasingly agitated from the lack of conversation and turned to bouncing her knees and flipping her phone on and off again.
Finally after what seemed like an eternity Ethan glanced up at her clearing his throat, “So we should talk about the tournament. It’s a really big deal for everyone involved, and it means a lot to the dojo as well.”
Haruka nodded her head, “Yes I agree.”
“And you’ve done a lot really, I can’t thank you enough for all of your work. With my first semester just starting I’ve had a lot to do and wouldn’t have been able to get half of what you’ve done completed.” Ethan stated as he adjusted the glasses resting on his nose.
“Happy to be of help team captain!” she beamed happily with a grin.
“That’s why this decision has been really tough, but I think I’ve made the right choice,” Ethan announced, and Haruka quirked a brow in confusion.
What decision? She wondered quizzically. Ethan shifted and cleared his throat. He was never very decisive or assured of himself outside of the dojo. He met her eyes with a very serious expression on his face.
“I’ve decided that you’re off the team.”
Haruka blinked and then shook her head unsure that she’d heard him correctly. She leaned back in her chair to take it in. She was aware that her brows were furrowed together as she stared at him. She took several breaths of air in before she responded.
“What?! I’m off the team?” She responded.
“Yes, I’ve decided that it’s better if you’re off the team for everyone,” Ethan nodded.
“But why? What? I can’t,” Haruka babbled stupidly unable to comprehend what was happening. A sick sort of feeling was settling into the bottom of her stomach.
Ethan sighed, “It wasn’t an easy decision to come to. But I think you’re simply too young to be representing the dojo at such a large event. We will win which means from there we’ll only be going to bigger and bigger stages. I don’t want your inexperience to hold us back.”
“We’re two years apart! I’ve been doing Karate longer than you have,” she retorted.
“Look this is just as important to me as the dojo alright? It’s going to look great on my applications to Law School if I win a state championship my first time being team captain,” he explained to her, “And I’m not going to let some little high school girl take that from me.”
“You were in high school this time last year! I’m the one who’s done all the work. I’m one of the strongest competitors on the team. I don’t understand,” Haruka argued back beginning to get angry.
“See! This is exactly why, you’re too emotional. Look I’m grateful for all your work. You’ve really brought the team together. But I can’t afford for you to mess things up,” Ethan assured her with a pat on her arm. She jerked back from his touch and hissed.
“This is ridiculous! This is my team!” Haru shouted at Ethan still in utter disbelief at the turn in events, “I know you’re team captain but I’m the one who has done all the work! I’ve made the choreography and trained the team.”
“Like you said I’m team captain.” He shrugged leaning away from her as he took a sip of his coffee.
“You can’t just take all my work like that! It’s not fair!” She argued as her foot stomped on the ground.
“I can and I will.” He stated plainly.
Her hands fisted by her side as her nose flared, “Did Sensei say you can do that?”
“He’ll be fine with it. We need a team that will win. And I’m sorry to say but we just can’t have someone as young as you representing the team.”
Haru thought back to all the work she put in. All the scheduling for practices, and coordinating which kata they’d use and determining the bunkai to go with it. She’d sacrificed so much of her free time, it had been like homework every night for the past two months. Her hands fisted by her sides and she pressed her lips together, but she couldn’t say anything as Ethan was her senpai.
“I’m talking to Sensei about this,” she stated and turned around to hide her anger. Ethan made a dismissive noise behind her. She pushed out of the store the chimes over the door ringing and stepped out onto the street. She glanced back at Ethan who settled in behind his laptop and went back to typing away.
She turned back to the street and set her shoulders square. She took in a breath to calm down and looked around for somewhere to hang out for some time to cool off. She’d planned to spend an hour with Ethan, having expected to run through everything they’d practiced and planned. There were a handful of restaurants and cafes, even a book store.
She realized with a grin that she’d never paid for her food and drink which meant that Ethan would. If he complained she’d tell him it was the least he could do for kicking her off the team. She decided that she’d check if the bookstore had any new shonnen manga to pick through. But as she stepped out onto the street her phone buzzed in her pocket.
“Hey,” she answered without looking at the caller ID. She hoped she didn’t sound impatient or angry.
“How’s the tournament practice going?” Subaru asked her curiously with a big grin.
“Not good. Ethan says I’m off the team.” She struggled not to growl.
“What? Do you need me to go talk to Sensei?” Subaru asked her worriedly
“No, this is my tournament I want to handle it myself.” Haruka responded with a deep inhale trying to centre herself and not throw a fit. Ethan had said it had been her immaturity that had gotten her off the team. If she created a scene it would only prove him right. She pinched the bridge of her nose.
“How about instead we chill out together huh? I was going to ask if you could swing by and meet me by my dojo when you were done your training session. But you could come over now instead.” Subaru offered and Haruka huffed glad that there was a distraction.
“I’d like that. You’re going to have to wait though since I need to catch a bus out there,” She answered.
“It’ll give you plenty of time to calm down on your way over. I still remember about your temper,” Subaru laughed and she made a noise of insult at that jab, “Alright you go catch that bus and message me when you’re near. I’ve got a surprise that I think you’d really like.”
Haruka softened, “Thanks Subaru,” she murmured.
The two of them quickly said their goodbyes and she hung up looking for the nearest bus stop. Haruka sat down at the stop and huffed angrily swinging her legs as she waited for it. Just as the bus was coming down the street a breathless Ethan showed up in front of her.
“Hey you forgot to pay for your food!” He exclaimed at her angrily. Haruka glanced down the street at the bus gauging how long it’d take for it to pull up. She then glanced back at Ethan. With a shrug she decked him just as the bus pulled up to the curb. It wasn’t a full forced punch, just a rabbit jab. But it had done its intended job. Ethan was doubled over as he covered his injured eye.
“Guess you’re right I’m too immature for the team,” she spat as she hopped on the bus. She knew it was immature. She knew it was going to get her in trouble and would probably only help Ethan’s case. She was going to feel bad about it later. But as of right now it felt really great to hit him in the face.
The bus driver was looking concernedly at Ethan as Haruka tossed her handful of change into the deposit box.
“Bad break up,” she shrugged and the bus driver nodded still looking confused but printed her a transfer slip anyways. She crossed to the back of the bus and found an isolated seat to settle into. The bus ride was long as she’d expected. She messaged Samantha about the unfortunate news, and tried to turn negative into positive stating now that she could help Samantha with her grading instead.
I hope you punched him Samantha jokingly responded.
I kinda did Haruka admitted.
OMG you haven’t hit anyone like that since Trevor in middle school! Are you going to get in trouble? Samantha responded.
Probably, I mean dojo rules are clear we’re not supposed to go around hitting people as we please. Haruka responded as the unease in her stomach worsened. She really had just made things worse.
Well he deserved it Samantha responded and Haruka chuckled. I’ve got to go, mom wants me to try on a new dress for my next pageant.
Ok! Have fun! Haruka responded and went back to fiddling with her phone to find a means to entertain herself before she got to the next town over. She debated messaging the rest of the team to notify them of the change, but since she couldn’t write a polite message she decided to write no message at all. She’d let them figure it out for themselves. She fiddled with her phone some more, playing with her apps.
Finally the bus chugged along to Haruka’s destination and she tossed a message to Subaru. He picked her up at the bus stop with a smile. Haruka forced herself to smile back and he wrapped her into a warm embrace.
“Hey, cheer up monkey,” Subaru comforted her as he gave her a warm squeeze, “It’s just one tournament. You’re young and skilled. Something great will come of that.”
She pressed her lips together and melted, “Thanks.”
“So are you ready to see my dojo?” Subaru asked her excitedly, “I wanted you to see it first because I think it means the most to you.”
Karate had been a huge bonding point for Haruka and Subaru. He’d been the one to realize that she was suffering in ballet. She couldn’t stand the dresses and the fact she couldn’t move as gracefully as the other girls. He recognized her growing frustrations and made her skip class one day to go to the dojo instead. For the next few weeks it had been their little secret until Subaru revealed to their father that Haruka was going for the first stripe on her white belt.
For the longest time it had just been the two of them going together. Haruka had excelled at it and pushed herself to impress Subaru in class and make him proud. When Subaru went away on trips she’d learn a new kata to show him when he got home.
If Antonio was her replacement mother, than Subaru was her second father. He’d been the one to take her on her first deer hunt, had shown her how to strip the carcass bare. And even though a few of her other siblings had joined karate it had never meant as much to the others.
“I’m really glad you chose me,” Haruka told her brother as she hugged him back, “It means a lot to me that I get to see this first.”
Subaru smiled warmly, “Well, I was thinking while I was at Grandpa and Grandma’s place you never actually got to go there. Everyone but you and Seth got to spend at least a few years living there, and ever since we moved back to the States we’ve never gone as a full family to visit.”
“So I thought to myself if I can’t take you to Japan, then I’d bring a little bit of it back with me for you. Granddad talked to me a lot while I was there, about a lot of things. Things about our family I never knew before,” Subaru explained, “And it really made me realise how important it is to be with family. I’m going to talk to dad. I want you to come and meet your grandparents. This summer it’ll be you and me.”
Haruka perked up and her eyes widened in excitement, “Really? You and me in Japan? No way!”
“For now though you’ll have to settle for what I’ve brought back with me,” Subaru teased and reached into his pocket, “I’ll let you do the honours of unlocking the place.”
Haruka was bouncing giddily with excitement the second the key landed in her hand. She squeezed the key tightly and squealed in excitement. Subaru laughed as he smacked her on the back.
“When we’re done here how about we grab a bite?” Subaru offered.
“My day could literally not get any better,” she announced.
The two of them chattered as they continued down the street before coming to a stop before Subaru’s dojo. Haruka took in the exterior. It was almost identical to what she had envisioned. She bounded to the door sliding the key in giddily. Her whole body shaking with excitement. She swung the door in and stepped into Subaru’s dojo. The place smelled of new paint, the freshly washed tatami mats and Windex that had been used on the mirrors. Suabru slipped in behind her flicking the lights on and inputting the security code to shut the alarm off.
Haru’s eyes scanned the room taking in all the new equipment and tools. She eventually settled on the front of the dojo which was positioned to the East as it should be with the kamisa set up to respect all the past instructors. She slipped her shoes off sliding them to be toes facing out towards the doorway. She stepped onto the edge of the dojo floor and bowed politely.
She strode to the centre of the dojo floor and glanced around in awe. Subaru had managed to find a nice large open space. He had a decently stocked wall of weapons for his students to borrow, and she was jealous of the neatly organized rack that her dojo lacked. She glanced up at the kamisa but didn’t recognize some of the instructors.
“So you like it?” Subaru asked her excitedly, “I called a girl I went to high school with to help me paint the place so it looked more like a traditional dojo.”
Haruka glanced over the walls. They had been painted to feel like they were made out of paper and wood and not dry wall. It was a very convincing illusion. She nodded her head in agreement as a smile stretched on her face.
“That’s not the only thing I wanted you to see either. I’ve got a surprise from Japan that I haven’t told anyone else about.” Subaru whispered excitedly.
“Hey Subaru why are we whispering?” she whispered back.
“I think it’s just because I’m excited,” Subaru responded with a laugh. He trotted across the mats and she followed to find a hidden alcove that lead to an office. Subaru gestured for her to wait outside and she waited impatiently. She shifted from foot to foot as she waited. She glanced over at the images on the kamisa trying to focus in on the unfamiliar ones to see if she could identify them.
He came back with a complete daisho in his hands. Haruka’s mouth jaw dropped in awe at the elegant pair of blades. They were old, she could tell that much. But they’d been well cared for, the years had not been unkind to them.
“They’re beautiful aren’t they? Grandfather gave it to me,” Subaru whispered to her his voice filled with awe, “He showed me how to properly care for them. They’ve been in the family for generations, and he asked that I carry them in our mother’s place.”
Haruka’s hands were itching to hold them, to feel their weight in her hand. She watched as Subaru marveled over them.
“There’s a lot of history in these swords Haruka. They had to be hidden during the world wars. I had to help Grandpa dig them up,” Subaru breathed, “They haven’t been used since the Meiji era. Since then they’ve just been for display.”
“The Meiji era,” Haruka repeated and glanced up at her brother excitedly.
“Apparently we had family members associated with the Satsuma clan, and family members associated with the Shinsengumi,” Subaru explained, “Grandpa didn’t tell me much more outside of that. We’ll sit down for lunch someday, I’ll tell you all about it. And then he’ll tell you more when we go.”
Haruka nodded her head. She was only half listening too entranced by the swords in front of her.
Subaru laughed at her excited face, “You’re just itching to touch these aren’t you?”
He passed her the katana, and the second the scabbard touched her hand she felt a jolt of electricity run through her. She felt the weight of hundreds of years and the lives this sword had taken fallen over her.
Her excitement was still there but she’d been hushed by the enormity of the seriousness of this.
It wasn’t as physically heavy as she’d thought it’d be. But the sword seemed to bear a soul of its own and that was what was heavy. Her right hand shifted over to the hilt and she wrapped it around it squeezing tightly. Her breathing was shallow as she held onto the blade. Exhilarated as if she’d just fought a battle. There was a great weight crushing down on her now.
“I knew you’d like that,” Subaru chuckled, “Now I know you’re just getting to know each other but I’m going to ask you to put the real sword away while I show you how to use it.”
Haruka handed him back the sword which he carefully stowed aside. She watched as he retrieved two wooden bokken. He tossed her one and she caught it easily. She’d handled a bokken a few times before in seminars and from a few impromptu training sessions with Subaru. But her hands more familiar with the feel of a bo staff or even a pair of tonfa.
“Alright, now for me to show you my new moves,” Subaru informed her. The two of them shifted to the centre of the training area and bowed respectively to the kamisa and then each other. Subaru began running her through some exercises. They practiced side by side with Subaru giving instruction. When he was satisfied enough with her technique the two of them worked on partner work.
Subaru of course was handing her ass to her on a platter. She was managing to hold her ground but she definitely wasn’t going to be winning any sword fights any time soon. She was good enough that she could block and evade his strikes. But not good enough to go onto the offensive without exposing herself. Her evasion and agility was mainly attributed to the other martial arts she knew. However, her lack of experience in handling a bokken was what held back her offensive abilities.
Haruka was the reason that they stopped practicing. She begged Subaru to give her a second to breathe. The two of them were both doubled over and panting for breath. Subaru was swiping sweat from his brow as Haruka sat on the ground feeling like she’d just dragged herself out of a boxing ring. She already had bruises starting on her arms.
“So, did that make you feel better?” Subaru asked her breathlessly.
“Totally. I feel like I could fight a ronin in a dark alley now,” Haruka panted as she collapsed back on the tatami mats exhaustedly. Her bokken stretched out across her stomach.
“I’m taking the daisho home with me tonight to show everyone,” Subaru told her, “So maybe after dinner I’ll let you practice with a real sword.”
“Sounds amazing,” Haruka replied and grinned, “So, lunch?”
Subaru laughed. The two of them got back to their feet and cleaned up the dojo space together. Once it was cleaned they bowed to the kamisa again and trotted to the edge of the dojo space. Haruka bowed as she stepped off the dojo floors and reached for her sneakers.
They were well-worn runners that could probably do with being replaced. She was planning on replacing them last month but had gotten distracted some shonnen manga Samantha had dug up at the local bookstore. The laces were mismatched from being replaced. The heels were decorated in notes from her friends written in sharpie.
Brother and sister clambered out of the dojo and into Subaru’s large pickup truck. He drove them to a nearby taco truck. Each of them put in a small order.
“Thank you for cheering me up,” Haruka told her brother with a grin.
“What’s a big brother for?” Subaru insisted. They drove home afterwards and Haruka realised her whole weekend had been used up. She’d have to wake up and go to school the next day.
After dinner she did go outside with Subaru to practice. Using a real katana for the first time was the closest to a magical experience that Haruka had ever experienced. For her this was her coming down the stairs in a dress and heels for prom night moment. Her breath as it slipped in and out of her was shaky in both excitement and fear. It was a true honor to hold such an amazing tool.
But it also made her feel like a child. It brought to light all of her inexperience and weaknesses. It reminded her that she was inferior to the previous owners of this blade. She was just a child playing make-believe. She wanted to make her ancestors proud. A fire was lit in her belly to train harder and impress the hands that had held this weapon before her.
She stopped when she was sweaty and exhausted with a grin she dragged herself upstairs to shower and collapse in her bed. She groaned the next morning and it took several moments of bargaining with herself to get out of bed. Yawning she dragged herself in front of the mirror to brush her teeth. She stumbled sleepily down the stairs to make a fruit smoothie for breakfast.
“Maybe you should have taken it a little easier yesterday sis,” Seth teased her.
She groaned and rolled her eyes, “Says the boy who spent most of yesterday sitting in an ice bath.”
The two of them snatched up their bags and slipped on their shoes to walk to school. Seth asked her about yesterday and she relayed the details of her time with Ethan and most of what had happened with Subaru.
“Do you think he’ll take me too?” Seth asked her.
Haruka paused she hadn’t thought at all about Seth yesterday with regards to the offer to go to Japan. He didn’t have any familial ties there. He was the reason that their father was never welcomed back by Haruka’s grandparents. But he still had emotional ties to go there just like her.
“Well I won’t go unless you can come too,” she assured him and gave him a side hug. They wandered into what seemed like just any other day of classes. Of course Haruka couldn’t wait for a moment alone to tell Samantha about her brother’s daisho. Samantha of course reacted like how Haruka expected, jumping up and down and clapping her hands as she squealed and Haruka joined in as well. As the two of them were getting out of class she got a voicemail from Subaru.
“Hey sis I hope that you’re feeling better over yesterday. I’ve got an idea to make you feel better, but first could you run my katana to the dojo for me? I want to talk to Sensei about a few things for tomorrow’s class. I’m also going to announce the opening of my dojo tomorrow.”
Haruka grinned and she texted her reply. Sure thing, I’m on my way home right now. I’ll do it then.
She only hung around long enough for her group of friends to gather together and they set off. The group shrank and shrank until it was just down to Samantha and Haruka. The girl’s laughed and chatted until it was time to part ways.
Haruka got home and stripped off her school uniform to get into athletic wear so she could go for a run when she was done her errand. She grabbed her brother’s katana and strapped it to her back figuring that would look less intimidating.
She set off immediately for her dojo. The sword thumped along her back. It felt like a stranger and a friend. The weight was familiar and it felt like she’d carried it a thousand times before. But at the same time it felt foreign and strange.
She was stopped at a cross walk thinking about that odd sensation, staring at the blinking red hand. An electric current was coursing through her spinal column and her hair felt like it was standing on end. The sensation was unnerving and making her afraid. She shifted from foot to foot as her hands fisted and unfisted by her sides. She glanced over to the pond over to her left.
“Help me!” a voice cried out and Haruka turned around looking for the source, “Please! Help me!”
She glanced around her confused her heart thumping violently in her chest. She did her best to get control over her breathing as she searched for the person who needed her help. Suddenly a hand slammed into her chest pushing her back as a girl ran past her.
“Someone help!” the terrified girl cried out. Haruka only paused long enough to register that the girl was wearing a furisode. She sprinted after the blonde beauty aware that there was something coming after the two of them.
“Let me help you!” She yelled at the girl. She caught up to the other girl easily and snatched her wrist. The girl’s brilliant ruby eyes swept up to hers and widened as they found Haruka’s sword. An awed sort of look crossed her features as the ruby eyes swept to Haruka’s stormy ones. Haruka wasn’t exactly sure how to explain it but she felt her heart thudded oddly in her chest.
“Behind you!” the girl cried. Haru turned putting herself between the girl and the threat.
There were several specter like creatures rushing towards them. If Haruka were to explain them she’d say demonic. The vaguely humanoid figures lunged towards them with their clawed hands.
“Get behind me!” Haru cried and faced the beasts down. She took a steadying breath and reached for the blade on her back. Her hand closed around the hilt of the sword just as the mysterious girl snatched Haru’s arm.
“I don’t have much time! You can’t fight those things! But I need your help-” she started in a rush but was quickly cut off as one of the specters unleashed a ghostly tendril that shot forwards and snatched her arm. The girl yelped in pain and without thinking about it Haruka drew her brother’s sword slashing down on the ghostly tendril. Black ink like blood splattered as the creature shrieked so loudly that Haru had to cover her ears. She and the girl stumbled back away from it.
The girl shook off the tendril that flopped around on the ground. Haruka lunged forwards with her blade to thrust it into the creature black blood spluttering on her face. She kicked the beast away and turned to face the next one.
“I came here to ask for you for help!” the girl pleaded with her. Haruka glanced back at her giving her a nod of assurance. Another creature lunged for the girl and Haruka went to intercept it. “I need you to-”
The girl didn’t have a chance to finish before the shadowy demon moved faster than Haruka could. Its hand slammed into her and Haruka was hurled backwards away from the girl she was trying to protect. She tucked her chin and pulled her arms in. She hit the pavement hard and rolled. She struggled up to her feet but just as suddenly as it had all started it was all over.
The girl, the creatures, all of it was gone except for the tendril still writhing on the ground. Haru shakily stumbled towards it sheathing the sword and reaching out for it. But as soon as her fingers stretched towards it the tendril disappeared.
She stood up spooked by what had happened, her heart pounded and her mind was racing madly trying to figure out what exactly had just happened. Her hands were shaking and her legs felt like jelly. But nonetheless she was relieved it was all over.
She wanted to sigh in relief but before she could her face was illuminated. She suddenly became aware of the blaring of a horn and screeching tires. The illumination had come from the headlights of an incoming truck. She heard the crash. Metal crunched as she hit the hood. Glass cracked when her head connected with the windshield.
She was knocked straight off of her feet. She felt the crack resound through her. The collision shattered her bones as easily as breaking glass. She could see the front of the truck that had just crashed into her.
Is that what’s going to be left of me? A dented bumper coated in blood? Her mind thought as she flew from the impact. The air was knocked from her lungs and she felt herself go numb. She flew over the street and slammed hard into the side walk before rolling down the embankment on its side and falling down into the river.
She splashed into the water bubbles flying up all around her. She involuntarily breathed in the water. It rushed into her lungs and she choked on it. Her vision was going blurry and darkening. She struggled to stay awake and tried to kick for the surface. Again she made the mistake of breathing in water. She felt as it flooded down into her lungs. And then darkness swallowed her whole.

Bad Faith Auto Insurance?
Should I hire an attorney for this?, I purchased a policy online a few months ago within the first few days that i had this insurance I had a storm and damaged my vehicle (minor) with hail damaged I submitted out a claim, appraiser was sent they covered the loss sent a check to me, now i take it to the bodyshop and try to have it fixed but they need a supplement, they contact insurance co. but insurance co, makes many excuses over this they state I dont have full coverage which I do, and it was verfied with them that i do, the next few weeks pass and then I finally get a call from a manager at the insurance company stating that they mistakenly sent me out a check because I made a false claim report, they said that they can tell by my pictures before policy was bought that vehicle had damaged (which is an excuse of denying supplement) and stated the the adjuster overlooked everything point here is that insurance co, cancelled my policy by stating underwriting issues, so now Im without insurance coverage, the manager also stated she reported this to the texas state but mentioned she could not put a stop payment on the check and that I could still use it to fix the car or cashout the check... I am really dissapointed at how all this was handelled, Im thinking about getting an attorney, I already discussed and this issue with the Insurance company and Im basicly told that I lied about the claim and they end my call... Should I wait to get an attorney or should I just get one and go from there? I believe this is bad faith insurance coverage, What should I do? I mean I still have the check it is not cashed out, I cant really do much with this check everyone charges an arm and a leg, can they file insurance fraud charges and if so even though I know I did everything right should I get an attorney?""

Car accident with no insurance?
I'm 19, and the car I was driving was constantly breaking down. When it was completely broken for two months, I stopped paying my insurance and instead saved back money to get the car fixed. My insurance canceled during that time. When I got it fixed on Friday, I was planning on renewing my insurance Tuesday, a day I had off work. Unfortunately, Saturday morning I got into a car accident. I was turning out of my apartment entrance to get to a middle lane where I could then get onto another road, and somehow didn't see a car close enough to hit me. He t boned me in the drivers side. Somehow neither of us got hurt. My car is pretty much done and his car, while not as bad as mine, did get some split open damage. The ticket says the damage is worth 3,000. AAA insurance question.?
I signed up for insurance for a home when I bought it 7 years ago. I told them I wanted full replacement which is what you have to have in order to get a mortgage. 7 years ago when I went down there to sign papers I specifically told him that I wanted to make sure everything was at full replacement value and my husband wanted to make sure the roof had full replacement value. I told the insurance guy that he is a roofer so that was a main thing he wanted me to make sure we had. The insurance guy laughed and made a little joke about it. So now, 7 years later we had hail damage and guess what.. my house does have full replacement value and all our property inside has full replacement value everything but the roof. Hmmm..imagine that. So I am sure I signed papers without reading the contract, I just took his word for it. Is there anything I can do? I am going to report this to the local new station. The insurance guy out right lied to me. This is in oklahoma. Is there a district office in oklahoma? I googled it and couldn't find anything. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.""

I got my driver's license last January when I turned 16. Our family only drives one car. My dad has insurance for our car under his name. Do I need insurance under MY name to drive the car too?
Insuring a new driver?
I will be soon getting my license (California), however I will not immediately be purchasing my own car. I am sixteen and I will most likely be driving one of my parents cars in the interim. Now here's my problem. My dad owns and e55 and my mom owns a 328. My mom commutes every day so driving her car is off the table. My dad almost never has to go anywhere in his car as he is currently on disability. The only problem is insuring me on the e55 will cost a fortune. My dad currently has the car insured under State Farm and their quick estimate say's I'd be paying nearly $600 a month. Now, I know there are multiple discounts I can apply for, but I'm not exactly sure what I'm eligible for. Since this would be a shared policy as a part time driver, would it be significantly cheaper? I'm just looking for options here, my dad wants me out of his hair but he also wants me to be paying insurance. I make enough that I could just barely afford $500 a month but that would leave me with no expendable income so.... help. Thanks.""

Why are Pickup trucks so expensive to insure?
ok, I'm 17 and I own a 1999 Dodge Ram 4x4. I pay an insane amount for insurance, and I know I'm a teenager, but I haven't had any tickets or accidents to make it go up. Anyway, my truck is really common in my area, there are Ford, Chevy, and Dodge trucks everywhere you look. But yet I compare the insurance of my truck to a brand new Camaro SS, and the Camaro way cheaper, Heck I compared it to a Brand new Mercedes Benz CLS63 AMG, and it's still way cheaper. I'm thinking about getting a little newer Dodge Ram, but the insurance is a little more expensive on it than what I'm already paying. So why are trucks the most expensive vehicles to insure? I mean if they are in a low speed accident, they don't cost nearly as much to fix as a Brand new expensive car such as a Mercedes with expensive parts, and trucks don't get damaged as easily either. It's kind of frustrating that I have a 11 year old vehicle that you see everywhere, and the cost to insure it is outrageous already, but even If I get the same truck only 5 years old, it's even more to insure, which is understandable seeing how it's newer. I know trucks are big, but even a Brand new Suburban cost less to insure than my 11 year old truck. The truck I'm thinking about buying is the most expensive vehicle possible to insure on a standard drivers license.""

Appropriate and affordable health insurance for my autistic son?
Here is the situation: My son is seven and severely autistic. He lives with his mom (we are divorced). As part of our agreement, I take care of his health insurance and medical bills, co-pays and things related to his medical care. I pay for insurance for him thru my employer, around $280 a month, just for him. However, although it is pretty good for office visits, it is really bad for hospital. Because he is autistic, he has to be knocked out for some procedures that he wouldn't normally be knocked out for. Recently he incurred a $9000 bill, which the insurance company wont pay because he already maxed out his hospital indemnity for the year. I feel that the time has come to provide him with some sort of hospital indemnity, but I can't find any that I can actually afford. I don't make very much, I make enough to pay his regular health insurance and his child support, and the occasional doctor bill. But I don't make enough to pay the huge premiums that a regular hospital indemnity plan has. To add another wrinkle, I live in New York, he lives with his mom in Connecticut, she is the one who brings him to the doctor/hospital, I'm just the one who pays for it, which I am happy to do. But the problem is, that anything available with NY, only covers providers in NY. CT wont work with me because i do not live there. Am I screwed (as in I have to pay 900 per month in hospital insurance), or is there something I can do? By the way, I make about $36000 per year, not a lot for New York. I just want to provide the best care for my son, but I need something I can actually afford""

Do I need to have insurance or proof of insurance when renting a car?
I'm planning on making a trip to Chicago. I have been wanting to go on a road trip for a long time. And I am afraid of taking a bus or going on a plane. A plane ticket costs a little bit too much for me. I'm 21. I currently do not own a vehicle of my own. So I am considering renting a car. I'm just wondering if I have to have car insurance in order to rent a car. I've never done this, so I have no idea what kind of things are required in order for me to rent. I've got my driver's license and a clean driving record. I don't have a line of credit. I don't have any credit cards so I hope there's no credit checks involved. Also, what's a rental car service that you would recommend? One that is cheap, honest, reliable, etc. My budget is $300. I'm going to meet a friend in Bartlett who is going to help provide me with lodgings so my only expenses to consider besides the car, are fuel and food costs. Thanks.""

I make enough that I could just barely afford $500 a month but that would leave me with no expendable income so.... help. Thanks.""
