So, this Mike, who was in disbelief that the rest of the party found Max "awesome" after knowing her for a few hours, is somehow the same Mike who knew he loved El the second he saw her in the woods??
Tumblr media Tumblr media
First, he thought El was a boy. Second, he was ready to send El away the next morning so he could get back to finding Will. Now Mike claims that he loved her in that moment? He's clearly lying and just saying either what he thinks El needs to hear, or what he's deluded himself into thinking. It's canon that Mike did in fact not even care about El that night in the woods!

I am the number one mike gets vecna'd truther. I have damn near 100% confidence that mike gets vecna'd. there is no version of s5 that I can imagine where mike doesn't get vecna'd. he will be shown horrendous visions and he will scream and cry and veccy boy will get his homophobic dog moment and mike is gonna be shaken up and refusing to tell anyone what he saw and it will be the most important, impactful, and jaw dropping vecna scene of the season, and I will be pulling up the cristiano ronaldo gif
#stranger things#byler#mike wheeler#he is just like. the perfect target. how would he NOT get vecna'd?#bc like. I'm a firm believer that more people will get vecna'd next season#like yeah sure he doesn't NEED to torment and kill more people but he'll do it for fun#no way the duffers introduced a villain who can see people's inner fears and guilts and then they use it twice and never again right?#so obvs people will get vecna'd next season. and mike is a PRIME target#a. vecna's main targets are el and will. both of whom love mike and are really close with him#two birds one stone‚ if vecna wants to consider himself a good villain‚ that right there is reason enough to get Mike#b. while again‚ I do think multiple characters will get vecna'd and therefore we'll see a lot of different headspaces#we mostly already know what a lot of the characters fear and feel guilty about. whereas mike is still supposed to be a mystery to us#we're not being shown his pov‚ so when we finally ARE‚ it will have the most impact of any possible vecna vision any of the characters get#''why do you say it'd be most impactful rori?''#bc listen. they're gonna want another impactful vecna scene. a running up that hill part two. but you can't beat max's scene. it's too good#the impact in max's scene comes from her escape‚ from her choosing to live‚ for her loved ones#which means if you want another emotionally impactful vecna scene‚ it can't be about the escape‚ that can't be where the impact is#or it will just feel like a cheaper rendition of max's scene#so the impact MUST come from finding out what haunts the character#and I FULLY believe there will be nothing quite as jaw dropping as vecna visions revealing mike's sexuality and how he feels about it#the only things that would probably come close would be el or will getting shown more aspects of the supernatural plot#but I'm pretty sure we're at a point in the story where we have most of the information#and we won't be getting anything super insane on that front

Enemies to lovers Eddie Munson x Cheerleader! Reader, maybe some months ago Reader was trying to tell Eddie that she liked him, but Eddie was talking with his friends about how he doesn't like cheerleaders and jocks and that made Reader angry at him bc she thought that he liked talking to her (she was his client) so after that Reader started to act cold towards him, and Eddie did the same with her. One day, they got paired together for a Literature project, and they went to Reader's house to work on that but they only spend the afternoon fighting, a day later they went to Eddie's and they were fighting, again, but then they just stayed in silence and started kissing each other and that's when Reader confesses her feelings for Eddie and tells him that's she heard what he said, and he's like I wasn't talking about you, I liked you too, I still like you, and then they have make up sex (if you're comfortable writing that!) and start their relationship
No smut :/ I'm sorry
I hope this is what you wanted and you enjoy it. Thank you for requesting <3
Tumblr media
Y/N spent as much time thinking about Eddie as she did talking about Eddie. If she ever wanted to hide the fact she liked him, she couldn't. It was written on her face.
Which is why her friends are sick of her doing nothing to make a move. Chrissy was a girly girl herself, she knew Y/N wanted Eddie to make the move. She wanted Eddie to go after her so she felt wanted. But Chrissy also knew Eddie would never ask out a girl he believed to be out of his league.
After weeks and weeks of Y/N's friends pushing her to ask out Eddie, she was ready to do it.
She tried to shake off her nerves. Her fingertips gripped her textbooks tightly as she walked toward Eddie and his group of friends.
She was a few feet away, close enough to hear him but not close enough for anyone to recognize her.
"You asked my opinion and I gave it. I think asking out Rachel is a disgrace to our kind. She's a cheerleader and friends with all those jocks. Is she going to stand up for you when your ass is being kicked? Nah, I don't think so. Because she's a cheerleader and those are heartless shells."
Y/N felt herself freeze at Eddie's words. Any bit of confidence was washed away as his words traveled down the hall. She knew Eddie didn't like the popular crowd, but she thought he moved past it. She thought she was changing that perspective. Is that all he saw her as? A cheerleader?
Before she heard anything more hurtful, she raced right past.
~~~
"Oh yeah? What about Y/N?" Mike snapped back, ever since his breakup with El, he's had his eyes on someone new. And all he wanted was advice and instead, he pissed off Eddie.
"She's different." Eddie shrugged, in his mind there was no comparison between Y/N and any other girl.
"Because she's yours?" Mike argued.
"He wishes!" Dustin laughed.
"No! Because Y/N has shown to be sweet, kind, and accepting with everyone. She's more than just a cheerleader, but I can't say the rest about the team. Mike, you need to understand some girls are only cheerleaders when the outfit is on, find one like that." Eddie said, smacking down on Mike's shoulder.
~~~
Y/N felt too embarrassed to be near Eddie. She didn't know if this whole time he couldn't stand her. They never hung out outside of deals, maybe he only dealt with her because he had to.
She stopped buying from him and went cold turkey. She didn't bother talking to him in the halls, didn't look in his direction, and acted like he didn't exist.
Eddie noticed the cold shoulder immediately, and it hurt. He didn't understand the sudden change of attitude but he also didn't give it a second thought. Maybe she wasn't as good of a person as he thought.
~~~
Over the next few weeks, they didn't speak to each other. Until they got paired together for a school project. Y/N immediately wanted to beg for someone else but the teacher was strict and didn't handle the backtalk well.
It was awkward, and they both hated that feeling. Eddie sat on her floor, her feet dangling off the bed. She read out loud the book, but his mind was elsewhere. Her room was what he thought it would be, and he adored all the framed photos she had. Her room looked just as sweet as he always thought she was.
"If you aren't going to pay attention, I'll just do it myself." She snapped, and the heavy book slammed shut.
Eddie jumped at the noise but recovered quickly. "Sorry, I was just observing your room." He admitted.
"Well don't. Not like you'll ever be in it again anyway." She snapped again. It hurt her a little to say, a small reminder that they weren't friends and they wouldn't hang out like she wished.
"Yeah, got it." He said back, same snappy tone.
"Look you don't get to have an attitude with me!" She argued she didn't do anything wrong.
"Oh, why? Because we don't get to speak unless it's on your terms? And I'm just supposed to be cool with that? You completely flipped the script on me so yeah, I'm a little pissed!" He argued back. If anyone was allowed to be annoyed, it was him. He was ignored without an explanation.
"Flipped the script? No, what happened was you talked shit behind my back and I finally figured out how you thought of me." She said, her anger leaving as a small amount of sadness settled in her chest.
"Who told you that crap?" Eddie said he felt the want to roll his eyes.
"YOU!" She yelled, she stood up and towered over him. "I heard everything you said to Mike. You went on and on about how cheerleaders are heartless. I can't imagine the other things you said before or after."
Eddie tried to remember what she was talking about, the realization hitting him. He stood up fast, a fast apology on his lips.
"No no no! I did say that yes, but not about you! I would never say those things about you." He tried to grab her hand but she smacked it away.
"Ow" he muttered
"How did you not say that about me? I'm a cheerleader!"
"I know!" He panicked, "but I said so many things after that. You must have walked away or didn't hear me because I explained you were nothing like that."
Y/N felt a part of herself believing him. He sounded so panicked, which meant he was caught or he was trying to prove his innocence and needed her to trust him.
"What did you say?" She asked
"I explained to Mike that the girl he's interested in doesn't care about him. And I knew that because of what you showed me. I see how sweet and caring you are. You're nice to everyone and you don't use your popularity to have power over anyone. You aren't just a cheerleader, you are so much more than that. That's why you are different and that's why I'd never say mean things about you." His words and eyes were pleading for her to believe him. "I'm so sorry you got hurt."
"Well I shouldn't listen to people's conversations," she shrugged, " I appreciate your apology and I accept it. I'm sorry for not talking to you about it. I was hurt because I like you. And I was planning to ask you out when I heard everything." She admitted she turned her head to the floor, her cheeks flamed with embarrassment.
"Holy shit!" He exclaimed, "You like me? And like me enough to want to ask me out?" Eddie couldn't believe his ears. He wanted the same thing, obliviously, but he never thought he had the chance.
She gave him a look and he moved on. It was clear she liked him and she gave him an opening.
He moved his feet forward until there wasn't space between them. His eyes searched into hers for a sign, when her eyes flipped down to his lips he got his answer.
He licked his lips nervously, his hand reaching to cup her chin as he leaned in. His heart raced when she leaned in, both closing their eyes in sync.
Her stomach fluttered when she felt his lips. He smiled when he felt her kiss back, her hands slid around to his back. Her palms were flat against his shirt.
They kissed for as long as they could. Whenever one of them went to pull away, they'd drag them right back in.
Eddie couldn't wait to shove this in Mike's face.
The Harrington Pattern Part 5
Hello! In this one we have things not getting off to the fun start Steve wanted, but Eddie and Steve show Robin the meditative joys of watching the weavers. And Mike and El get a lesson in when to give to friends.
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4
@mira-jadeamethyst @rozzieroos @itsall-taken @redfreckledwolf @emly03
****
Once they had all paid Steve gathered up the kids.
“You are to stay in pairs,” he admonished. “I don’t care if you swap every so often but stay in at least pairs. You can stay in great big group for all I care. But no one wanders off alone. If you want to do something and no one else does come find an adult, chances are that one of us six was already going to do it, okay?”
All the kids nodded.
“Everyone is to meet here at 1pm and 6pm for lunch and dinner,” Steve continued. “The adults are exempt but I tried to pick times where there wasn’t anything big going on. Food money was given to me by your parents so you’ll never starve. Drinking fountains are everywhere. Stay hydrated, you’ll regret it if you don’t.”
Will nodded. “I’ll make sure they do.”
Steve smiled. “Thanks, Will.” He held up his hand as they were getting into pairs. “One more thing. Your parents gave you money for loot. If you spend it all today and see something you want on Saturday, I will not buy it for you. Now I can’t stop anyone else from doing the same, but you need to watch your money.”
Eddie looked at the other Corroded Coffin boys who all nodded. “I think I can speak for us adults when I say. I ain’t paying for your shit either.”
All the kids turned to Robin like a lion sensing its prey.
“Don’t look at me,” she huffed holding up her hands in surrender. “I’m poor. I’m hoping that someone pretty will buy me pretty things so I don’t have to go without.”
Steve barked out a laugh. “Looks like you’ve been stemmed–stymied–” he frowned. “Looks like you’ve been thwarted all around.”
The kids grumbled but nodded.
Steve smiled. “Now go have fun! I promise, you’ll love it.”
Max and El grabbed each other’s hands and skipped ahead of the boys. Robin smiled.
“That’s the downside to growing up,” she sighed wistfully. “Is adults no longer think holding hands with your best friend is cute, only gay.”
Eddie nodded. “I just don’t care most of the time,” he said with a shrug.
Steve turned to the members of the band. “Are you guys going to be staying together for the most part or will you be splitting up? I just want to make sure I know where people are going to be.”
Gareth and Jeff shared an amused glance.
“What?” Steve asked, putting his hands on his hips.
“Eddie said you were such a mom friend,” Gareth explained, “but I didn’t believe it.”
“Yeah, man,” Jeff chuckled. “It’s cute.”
Steve crossed his arms in front of his chest and looked down, scuffing the dirt with the toe of his boot.
Brian waved his hands. “It’s not bad. It’s just a surprise.”
Jeff cocked his head to side. “Maybe not that big of one after seeing how he handled Mike...”
Brian laughed. “Fair enough.”
Eddie walked over and lifted Steve’s chin up gently. “It’s sweet, Stevie. We aren’t mocking you for it, okay?”
Steve nodded.
Suddenly Robin coughed into her fist that sounded a little like ‘gay’.
Eddie and Steve almost leaped back from each other while their friends laughed.
“Laugh it up, fuzzball,” Eddie muttered as he stalked past his friends.
Steve just stood there as the rest of them followed Eddie in. All but Robin.
“I’m sorry, Steve,” she mumbled. “I thought you two were cute, I didn’t mean to embarrass you. That’s the last thing I thought it would do.”
Steve just shrugged and then led the way into the Fair grounds. Robin’s eyes lit up as the sights, and sounds, and smells came at her all at once.
There were people in jeans and t-shirts but also people in various states of costume, ranging from beginner to professional. The period ranges were vast, too. From the early 14th century to the very, very beginning of the 20th.
Robin was in awe.
“Steeeeveeee,” she said, smacking his arm repeatedly. “This is amazing!”
Steve turned to her and smiled. “I told you.”
She hugged him around the neck. “You did and you were right. Those kids brains must have exploded on entry.”
He chuckled. “Well, thankfully I don’t see any brain goo anywhere, so I think they’re safe.”
She threw back her head and laughed. “Fair enough.”
“Where do you want to go first?” Steve asked, taking a pamphlet from Fair worker that had all the events and times on it.
She peeked over his shoulder and hummed thoughtfully.
“There isn’t a lot going on today.”
Steve shrugged. “All the big events like the joust are going to be on Saturday when they have the biggest crowds. But there are still some fun things we can do.” He pointed to the events under that day. “We can watch the weavers or battle a knight.”
“You better not do that one,” she said with a grin.
Steve rolled his eyes. “Why? Because you think I’ll lose?”
She swatted his arm. “No, dingus, because you might accidentally pulverize the guy.”
Suddenly there was another arm being slung around Steve’s shoulders.
“I must concur with the lady pirate, mi’lord,” Eddie said cheerfully. “I’ve seen you fight, handsome. You’d accidentally kill the poor actor.”
Steve blushed. “Thanks.”
He looked around but he didn’t see the rest of Eddie’s merry band. “Where are your friends?”
Eddie sighed. “Already succumbed the siren lures of capitalism.”
Steve blinked at him a moment. “Huh?”
Eddie pointed a little further down the way where the market had been set up. “They’re at the sword stall.”
Steve’s mouth formed an O and he nodded. “Yeah, I don’t doubt that’s where the kids are, too.”
“That’s because there is nothing else to do,” Robin pointed out. “Not all of us want to watch people make clothes.”
Eddie’s lit up. “They’re already showing the weavers?”
Steve nodded. “Yeah, you want to come with me?”
“Hell yeah!” he crowed. He grabbed Robin’s wrist. “You’ll love this.”
And he started dragging her to where the looms, Steve laughing, close behind.
They reached building it was housed in and Eddie stepped aside to allow her to see into the room.
It was brightly lit from them many windows in the room. There were different looms from different eras and different levels of expertise. There was even a cute little blonde girl barely older than Holly, Mike’s little sister in one corner with her starter loom, still making mistakes but being patiently guided by someone who looked to be her mom.
But the true center piece was this amazing Asian loom at the back. The weaver was in a kimono and face paint, but her hands danced along the loom making it seem like she had more than usual two.
Robin was smitten.
Eddie smiled back at her and then grabbed her wrist again to pull her into the room.
The little girl’s mother looked up and smiled at them. “Welcome!” she greeted warmly. “We, of the weavers guild, greet you. I am Goody Danvers. If you have any questions please direct them at me so our weavers aren’t disturbed.”
All three of them nodded and began to wander around. Robin was forced to admit that it was way more than just making clothes or even cloth. It was artistry and technique that was just beautiful to watch.
She was, of course, drawn to the Asian loom with its beautiful weaver.
Steve on the other hand went straight for Goody Danvers. He was asking her all sorts of questions and she just lit up with someone expressing genuine interest in the weaving.
Then Steve asked the question. “You thread is amazing. Do you spin it yourself?”
Goody Danvers face was like the sun with how happy that question made her. “We do! Do you guys want to see how we do it?”
Steve nodded enthusiastically while Robin was loathed to leave the beautiful weaver.
“You go ahead,” she murmured never taking her eyes off the scene the woman was weaving into her tapestry.
Steve’s shoulders slumped a little. But Eddie came skipping up to them. “Prick any princesses’ fingers lately?” he teased Goody Danvers.
She wagged her finger at him. “Do you be going around calling me a witch, I might get burned at the stake.”
Steve and Eddie laughed and mimed zipping their lips closed and throwing away the key.
She led them to the backroom where there were other women spinning. Steve figured these were the ones that didn’t like being watched because more than half of them stopped what they were doing the moment they walked in.
He smiled his best babysitter smile and waved like an absolute dork. One of the teenaged girls blushed and turned away.
Eddie frowned, putting his hands on his lower back. He was about to turn back around and rejoin Birdie when he felt a warm hand on his elbow. Steve wasn’t looking at the pretty red-head that blushed at his dorky wave, he was looking at him. Hazel eyes almost antique silver in the natural light.
“You okay?” Steve whispered.
Eddie nodded. “It’s just dustier in here than I thought it would be.”
Goody Danvers nodded. “No fire of any kind allowed in this room. A simple spark could cause a powder keg in here and I don’t feel like leveling the Fair this year.”
“What type of materials do you use for your thread?” Steve asked, his hand never leaving Eddie’s elbow.
And they just listened to her talk about the different types of threads and what they were used for and Eddie felt the warmth in Steve’s presence as he paid her his rapt attention.
Was that was he looked like when he talked about DnD or metal music? Because if it was Steve never looking away from him when talked suddenly made a lot of sense. It was addicting watching Steve engage with someone who shared his interests.
Steve looked down at his watch. “Shit. We’ve got to go meet some people for lunch. But thank you for taking your time to show me everything and answer all my questions.”
Good Danvers smiled. “The pleasure was all mine. It was nice to find a young man who was so interested in what I had to say.” She walked over to a basket.
“Here, pick out a bundle of thread you like as my treat.”
Steve really lit up then. “Thanks!” He went through the basket and picked out this beautiful red silk thread.
“Good choice,” she said. “I know you’ll make something truly remarkable with it.”
Steve blushed and said thank you again as Eddie led him out. They were forced to drag Robin back out of the building.
“Food,” Steve insisted. “Actually...” he had spotted a water fountain. “Water first then food.”
Eddie took a long drink, his throat dry from the spinning room. Robin went next and then Steve.
They barely made it to the food court just under the wire. Some of the kids were already there. Max and Lucas, Dustin, too. Gareth was there, but Jeff and Brian weren’t yet.
Dustin looked at his watched and tapped like a disapproving father. “Just what time do you call this, hmmm?”
Steve burst out laughing as Eddie threw his arm around his shoulders.
“Like father like son,” Eddie teased.
Dustin gasped, offended.
It wasn’t too long before El, Mike, and Will showed up, cutting it even finer than they had, arriving at 1pm exactly.
Steve just raised an eyebrow as they skidded to a stop in front of their table.
Steve got them their food and most of them were half way through their lunch by the time Jeff and Brian had wandered into the food court.
Everyone was talking about all the things they had seen and their plans for the rest of the day and maybe Steve was more than a little pleased that they hadn’t spent all their money.
Everyone was talking but Will. So Steve slid over to the young boy and nudged his shoulder.
“Hey, what’s up?” he whispered.
Mike looked up at them and then began to poke at his plate.
Alarm bells were going off in Steve’s head.
“There was this really cool wizard’s staff at one of the stalls,” Will said. “But it costs ten dollars more than what I have on me.”
“I offered to give him some of mine,” Mike said, “but he wouldn’t take it.”
Steve got it. “Ah.”
“It’s your money, Mike,” Will protested. “Buy something you want.”
“I want to buy it for you,” Mike bit back.
El poked at her food too. “I too, offered to help him buy it but he wouldn’t let me either.”
Eddie stood up and motioned for Mike and El to follow him, while Steve scooted closer to Will. “I’m sorry you couldn’t afford it and it’s hard when you want something so bad and it’s just out of reach.”
Will nodded. “But somehow I don’t think you specifically are talking about a wizard’s staff.”
Steve looked up at were Eddie was talking to Mike and El, and then ducked his head shyly. “No, you’re right there.”
Will gave his hand a squeeze. “For what it’s worth, I think he likes you too.”
Steve squeezed his hand right back. He just hoped Will was right.
If I Should Stay
Part 1 | . . . | Part 5 | Part 6 | Part 7
Everyone immediately spreads out to look for El. They can’t find her inside the house anywhere, so they spread out outside, calling her name as they go.
“El!”
“Eleven?”
“El, please!”
Steve barely has time to get his arms up before something barrels into him, almost knocking him over. He shouts in surprise, windmilling his arms to try to stay up, and looks down to see El, face tucked in his stomach, arms tight around his waist. He smiles and wraps his arms around her. “Hey, El.”
She pulls back to look at him seriously. “I am glad you are here.”
He smiles. “Yeah. Me too.” He suddenly frowns. “So, you know-”
She nods. “You feel different.”
Steve grins. “I’m gonna go ahead and guess that’s a good different. Robin, too, y’know. We both came back together.”
“I know.”
By this point his shout had attracted everyone’s attention, and they’re all gathered around Steve and El. He looks at them. “How about we move this back inside?” He suggests. “Give us a second.”
Robin meets his eyes and nods, herding everyone inside, and Steve feels immensely grateful that she was brought back with him, that she’s his friend. “El?” He asks, forcing himself to focus. “Why’d you leave?”
She shrugs and buries her face in his stomach again. “Loud.”
“Oh,” Steve murmurs. “Think you can come find me next time things get too loud? That way either I can tell them to shut up, or you can go into a different room for a while. At least someone will know where you are.” He strokes a hand over her head. “I don’t have to tell you what’s in these woods. I know you’re more dangerous, but we’re not. I’d rather not risk it until we have to.”
“Okay. I am sorry.”
“I know. And it’s not your fault.” He leans in to whisper conspiratorially, “We can blame Eddie.” She giggles, and he grins, proud to have made her laugh. “Ready to go inside?”
“Ready,” she nods, grabbing Steve’s hand and squeezing it. He squeezes back, a quick pump, and together they walk inside to see everyone sitting quietly in the living room, waiting for them.
“You wanna go sit down?” He asks quietly, and she hesitates, then nods, moving to sit by Mike.
“Okay,” he says, as Robin moves to stand next to him. “I’m sure you all have plenty of questions.”
“Yeah,” Mike says, “how’d you know about El?”
“We’re from the future,” Robin says.
“Right, cause that makes sense,” Dustin says.
Steve rolls his eyes. “You have cleidocranial dysplasia. You’d never tell your mom, but you’re being bullied at school because of it. Your favorite movie series is Star Wars. You’re a brat with an attitude problem, but you’re smart, which means most people don’t call you on it.” Dustin’s eyes are wide. “Do you believe me?” Dustin nods.
“He’s telling the truth,” El says quietly to Mike, who looks between her and Steve before finally nodding. “Okay.”
Steve sighs. “We’re here because everything that’s going on—El, Will, Barb—it doesn’t stop. It gets worse. More people die. We want to stop it before it gets to that point.”
“Okay,” Nancy says, leaning forward. “How do we do that?”
“We don’t exactly know,” Robin admits. “We’re rewriting history just sitting here talking. We can tell you that Will’s alive. In danger, but alive. Barb we don’t know about.”
“El,” Steve asks quietly. “Could you find her?” She nods, and he turns the TV on, changing it to a channel filled with static. “Robs, I have a blindfold in my room. Second drawer in my nightstand.”
“Got it,” she says, racing upstairs.
He moves the coffee table out of the way and looks at El. “If you’re not ready-”
“I am,” she promises. “But I need quiet.”
“It’ll be quiet,” he assures her, smiling at Robin when she returns, black fabric in her hand. “Thanks. El?” He gestures to the floor, and she nods, takes a deep breath, and sinks to the floor in front of the TV.
He ties the blindfold on her, then takes a seat on the couch next to Robin, who immediately tangles their fingers together.
Everyone sits, quieter than they’ve ever been before, and waits.
King&Prince 10
After his foot was deemed fine, Dustin dragged Steve to a sitting room and pushed him onto a couch.
"Wait here. I need to get everyone", he beamed before running off.
Steve really didn't understand what had gotten into him, but figured that he might finally meet this enigmatic Eddie. It was odd that he hadn't made himself known. From how the kids talked, he seemed like a larger than life personality. Dustin must have sent his friends ahead first, because Max, El, and Lucas arrived, and then Will and Mike.
"Where were you this morning?", Max asked, arms crossed.
"I...went on an outing with the king", Steve answered. He didn't think it wise to admit that while on the outing, he had smacked him and ran off up into a tree. Now that he thought about it, the whole thing was embarrassing. Steve rubbed his eyes and groaned.
"What's wrong?", El asked.
"I think my father was right. I'm an absolute idiot."
"Yeah, but a useful one", Robin said, coming in, following behind Dustin. "If our liege is going to be taking you out like that, I suggest we draft up some kind of sign out sheet."
Steve brought his hands down from his face. "What? For me? Like a piece of equipment."
"The music room looks great now, thanks to you", Will pointed out.
"Dustin. Why are we all here?", Lucas asked.
Dustin really looked like his face would break from how hard he was smiling. "You guys aren't gonna believe this. Steve says he's never met Eddie. Ever."
Steve wondered when he got comfortable not hearing the title 'prince' before his name. Probably when people spat it out to him like a curse word. While he was meditating on this, the rest of the group shared confused looks.
Mike spoke up first. "But he-"
"I know!", Dustin giggled.
"Does he-", Lucas stammered, pointing to Steve. "Does he not know-"
"How is that even possible? Is he brain-dead?", Max asked.
"Starting to seem like a real possibility", Robin said.
"If you all came just to insult me, I'll be heading back to my room now", Steve said, standing when El grabbed his arm.
"Wait. Sit", she ordered softly, so he did. Then she looked to the others. "Don't be mean. It's not his fault he doesn't know."
"Know what?", Steve asked.
"Certainly the things a Harrington doesn't know could fill a book", the king announced his presence with that quip. "Perhaps several books."
"Perfect. We're all here", Dustin grinned.
Steve didn't get what he meant by 'all'. "You all were talking him up so much, I thought I was finally going to meet this Eddie." He didn't miss the way the king's eyes got wide.
"This is probably the funniest thing I've ever seen", Will grinned.
Dustin cleared his throat. "Steve, why don't you tell us about Eddie?"
"Why would I tell you about your friend?", Steve crossed his arms.
"Just, tell us how you'd describe him", Lucas urged.
Steve glanced at King Edward, always wary of him, even though there was a small table between them. "He's always hanging around you guys. Telling you stories that you like, playing with you."
"Which was your favorite story?", Dustin asked.
"Depends", Steve shrugged. "If it's the one he does with you guys, I sort of liked that one about the missing friend. I don't believe in leaving anyone behind and I can't believe you argumentative shits actually worked together long enough to find them."
"You gonna let your prisoner call your wards 'shits'?", Robin smirked at the king.
"If the boot fits", he replied, face unreadable.
Steve didn't actually know how the king felt about this band of children. They seemed to enjoy the benefits of having the king's favor, despite at least one of them being a servant's child. Not for the first time, he wondered what they were all doing here.
"Anyway", he continued. "If it's my favorite story about Eddie, probably the one you called the uh, what was it? The ribbon incident?"
The king shot up to his feet and pointed an accusatory finger to Dustin. "You told him about that!?", he squawked in a very un-kingly manner.
"I didn't, Max did", Dustin ratted right away.
"I did. It was funny", Max said.
"What about the nice things about Eddie?", El asked.
"Who's saying nice things about Eddie?", Robin asked, brow raised. "Like, out loud?"
"Great gusts, you'd think they worship him", Steve groaned. "Half the things they told me about were how amazing Eddie was."
"Okay, Steve you can shut up now", Mike warned.
"'Eddie did this and it was great', 'Eddie did that and we fucking loved it'. 'Eddie's the best', Eddie is-", Steve paused when he saw the king smiling. Not just smiling but looking...well and odd combination of smug and bashful. Why would he...wait...
"I'm going to ask a stupid question", he started.
"My word, I think he's got it", Robin said.
"Shh, birdie. There's no such thing as a stupid, little prince", the king looked to him.
There was something different about the way he said 'little prince' this time, but Steve forged ahead. "King Edward...are you Eddie?"
"That I am", he answered.
"You just-you just let these random children call you that?"
King Edward-no Eddie-no, he was still King Edward, looked around the room at the gaggle present. "I wouldn't call them 'random'."
Steve couldn't take it. He was looking at them with...well it could only be described as fondness, as adoration, something like love. He shot up from his seat and marched towards the door, needing to get away. This time, El didn't hold him back. But he did hear Dustin running after him and calling for him. Steve didn't stop until he was back in his room. Not his room, a cell. He might have a better bed and a window now, but this was still very much a prison.
"Hey, what the shit?", Dustin demanded, coming in without so much as a knock.
"You all just expect me to believe all of that? That King Edward is Eddie?"
"Yeah", Dustin jutted his chin out. "Why's that so hard to believe?"
"That man is the same one who cried when his favorite lute broke? The same one who used to sing El to sleep? The same one who ate so many strawberries that he passed out?"
"To be fair, he was shifted into a bat at the time, so it only took like ten strawberries", Dustin clarified.
"You're asking me to look at red and see blue."
"Huh?"
"King Edward is not the same as Eddie. Those are two different people and I won't believe that they're the same." Steve turned to look out the window. He was wasting his time here. He had to think of an escape. It was far up but with enough sheets, this might be a viable option.
"Maybe I don't want you to see blue. Maybe I want you to see purple."
Steve's brow furrowed. "What?"
"You knew about one side of Eddie. Let's call that red. Now you know the other side, his blue side. Now you just need to put them together to make purple", Dustin explained.
"You're asking the impossible." Steve sat down on his bed but kept his eyes trained on the window.
Dustin came over and sat next to him. "Have you ever had someone look at you and only see one thing?"
"It's different with him. He's a tyrant."
“Did you ever think it might be time for you to get rid of that narrow worldview of yours and broaden your horizons?”, Dustin tilted his head like he was talking to a child.
Steve, ever stubborn, didn’t respond and kept looking out the window. He couldn’t see his kingdom from here, and at this point he was wondering if he’d ever lay eyes on it again. He didn’t know whether that would be a bad thing or a blessing. He didn't want to admit it, but Dustin had hit the nail on the head. Back home, he'd only been one thing or the other. People rarely got close enough to see the whole picture of what he was.
“Seriously, what’s the worst thing that can happen?”, Dustin urged, frustrated.
“I’m not going to be toyed with by your king.” At the end of the day, they were mortal enemies. There was no common ground wide enough to change that. A few stories of him not being a menace meant nothing. At least that's what he was telling himself.
"Henderson, leave us alone", the king said, also coming in without knocking.
Steve expected to hear protests, but Dustin got up and left without a word. Apparently he did actually respect the king's authority sometimes. Steve turned, knowing it wasn't wise to have your back towards the enemy.
"Suppose you're here to tell me how nice you actually are."
The king closed the door but didn't step away from it, keeping the distance between them. He looked uncertain and that enough threw Steve off. What did he have to be unsure about?
"There's something I need to tell you. Something I should have said days ago."
"What? Your nickname? I would have figured it out if those brats had any sense of awareness."
"They talk about you the same way."
Steve stood slowly, feeling somehow vulnerable even though neither of them were positioned to fight. "What?"
"Ever since they started talking to you, it was always 'Steve this, Steve that'", the king smiled in much the same way he had before. "'Steve knows so much, I learned a lot from him today'. It was kind of annoying to be honest."
Steve crossed his arms. He could relate, but he wouldn't let that show.
"I didn't want to believe that the son of my enemy could be good with kids. That he could be kind and gentle."
"Why are you telling me this?", Steve asked.
"Because I know you're not like your father. Or your grandfather. As much as you pretend to be."
"You don't know anything. And if you think being nice to me is going to get me to defect, you've got another thing coming."
"You're that loyal to your father?", he felt the words rising up out of his mouth like venom but couldn't decide if he wanted to poison the prince or protect him.
"I'm loyal to my kingdom", Steve said, voice full of sincerity. He knew he wasn't the perfect prince, but his father wasn't infallible either. But Steve's allegiance had been to his people for a long time. He felt as though he'd said too much though, when he saw the king's expression slip.
“Your king…Your father…”, Eddie looked away, unable to meet his eyes. Why was this so hard? Why couldn’t he say it? “When I sent the ransom letter, all I asked was to negotiate. Only then could I guarantee your safe return.”
Steve’s face showed no change. No realization. If anything, he looked resigned.
“King Alric has refused to sit with me.”
“So you can no longer guarantee my safety”, Steve surmised.
There was an even deeper resignation as his shoulders sagged and Eddie knew that Steve believed he was here to execute him. He shook his head frantically, making a decision right then and there.
“Your safety is between you and I now. It has nothing to do with that man.”
Steve frowned. "But you just said-"
"I said you're not your father."
"...So you'll let me go?"
Eddie could hear Nancy berating him and even Jeff giving him some choice words for releasing what should be a very valuable hostage without consulting them first. He pushed their voices away.
"If that is what you wish."
Steve didn't know if he felt a weight lift off his shoulders or a heavier one bear down on him. Before, his father had decided where Steve would go and he obeyed. Then he had been shackled by King Edward, only allowed where he let him. But now he was being giving a choice. To return home or to...to what? Stay here? Was it even a choice?
He felt completely unmoored and didn't know what was right.
"If you stay...", Eddie started, looking unsure himself. "If you stay, you won't be a prisoner anymore."
Steve let out a breath. "Then what will I be?"
Eddie grinned cheekily and Steve thought of the color purple. Dammit, Dustin.
"You'll be one of my little shits."
Steve laughed so sudden and loud that Eddie startled. Everything he'd been feeling had bubbled up and overflowed and finally found its way out. When he finished, he wiped a stray tear and caught his breath.
"Can we think of a better title while I think about it?"
"At your leisure, little prince."
Holy cow can you believe we're nearly done with the first arc?
Hold on, I just thought of something. So we've talked a lot about how Mike's love confession monologue feels off and feels narratively clunky, but we don't really talk about WHY that choice was made.
Because here's the thing: the narrative imperfection is in direct conversation with Will's monolgue/love confession.
In both speeches, on the surface level, they seem like they should make sense, that is, until you start looking at the details.
In Will's love confession scene, we see him tell Mike that El "commissioned" the painting for him, which serves as a cover for Will's real intentions in creating that painting. On the surface, it seems like a believable thing El could do out of affection for her boyfriend, until you start to think about it again and realize we've never once heard El and Mike discuss DnD in any sort of depth, and she likely wouldn't be overly familiar with the roles of the party.
We also see Will here say that if Mike felt like El was "pushing [him] away," that it was likely just because she was afraid of losing him. Upon first hearing this, it sounds feasible that given the distance, El could be pushing Mike away, but when we look at the actual context of El's feelings towards Mike over the course of the season, we see her room filled with pictures of Mike and a box full of momentos, and we're privy to the dozens of letters she has sent him. In other words, we can see El's affection for Mike loud and clear, and so can he.
And when Will tells Mike that El needs him, these are sweet and reassuring words, but we've also seen how quickly El dumped Mike in season 3 and how she left without warning to go with Owens and get her powers back, once again leaving Mike behind. In truth, El might love Mike, but she doesn't need him, not like he seems to need to be needed.
Will's monologue is meant to throw off Mike, but we see a few shots within the van scene where it seems as though Mike is confused and processing, as if something isn't quite lining up, but he can't really put his finger on why.
In Mike's monologue to El, it follows a similar pattern. Mike tells El that he loved her since the moment he met her in the woods. From an audience standpoint, having seen Mileven's relationship manifest over the past three seasons, at first this seems sweet. But then as we parse the context of that moment, Mike's assertion rings false as we see him in the first scenes with El confused, afraid of her, and ready to cast her out in favor of finding Will. It's only when she demonstrates that she could help find him that Mike starts to see her as anything other than transitory.
Mike also makes it a point to say that he is "not scared" of El and that he's "never felt that way." While this is certainly something you would hope your boyfriend would say, this, also rings false as we see multiple times that Mike is shocked by her powers, and even accusatory with his famous "What's wrong with you?" line. Mike has been scared of El on MULTIPLE occasions.
He also tells El in this scene that he "doesn't know how to live without [her]." I'd say this is the most up-for-grabs statement that Mike makes, because he does care about and have love for El, but he's also shown twice now that he has lived without her. The first time, when he believed she might be dead, Mike checked in on El every day, but he never went after her. We see some definite signs of grief from his acting out in school and grades slipping, but his life with his friends remains overwhelmingly unchanged in her absence. The second time we see this is in season 4 when they are forced into a long distance relationship. While Mike does still receive letters from El, he doesn't seem lovesick or mopey that she's not around. He joins Hellfire and spends time with his friends. If anything, we get more indication that he's felt the absence of Will more strongly as he directly tells Will that "Hawkins isn't the same without [him]."
He says his "life started that day [he] found [El] in the woods." Another beautiful sentiment, until you look closer. This directly conflicts with Mike's character arc in season 1 in which his main priority was finding Will. It also conflicts with Mike's statement in season 2 that choosing to be Will's friend was the "best thing [he] ever did." Obviously Mike had a life before El, and even after having met her, he still believes that being Will's friend was the best thing he ever did, and not finding El or making friends with El or kissing El.
We also see Mike say here that he "love[s El]" with or without her powers. This has been the crux of their relationship drama throughout the season as Mike continually identifies El as a "superhero" and El, feeling lost without the thing that makes her feel special, goes off to regain those powers, because she thinks that's what Mike wants her to be. And even during that time, Mike refers to El as "Superman" during his conversation with Will. While Mike saying he loves her without her powers here might seemingly resolve this earlier conflict, he then goes on to specifically talk about and focus on her powers in his speech, making his words feel disingenuous.
He then once again refers to El as his "superhero" and tells her she can "fly" and "move mountains," both things that connect back to her supernatural powers and her otherness, but not her, not "exactly who she is" as he claims.
The entire time Mike is giving this speech to El, we see Vecna's vines TIGHTENING around El, not loosening, until she looks over at Max, someone who has over and over again reminded her what it is to be free and to be her own person.
This scene, just like Will's monologue, is meant to function as a form of misdirection, but not necessarily for El, for the audience. As we've discussed on the surface, all of these elements Mike brings up in his monologue should make sense for a couple in love, and to a casual viewer, would probably just be written off as a kind of corny scene, but what we as critical readers of the scene can take away from it is that this scene is intentionally meant to mislead you.
Mike is not talking about his real feelings for El here. He's talking about feelings for the version of El he created for himself in his head. For the larger-than-life savior. Simply, Mike loves the idea of El, but not the person she's become. And El knows that his speech about her, however touching to an outside audience it may seem, does not really reflect her, and that's why we see the vines tighten around her neck.
So what could this mean for season 5 and what does it mean in connection to the Will confession?
I think this heavily suggests that Eleven will be single in season 5 and that she will break up with Mike since he no longer really sees her for who she is. But I also think that this misdirection theme will play out in Byler as well. Just as the audience is meant to slowly piece things together after the fact, Mike is supposed to do the same in his relationship with Will. As season 5 unfolds, I think we'll see Mike get more hints that the painting was not commissioned by El and that the version of him that is loved and needed is not El's, but Will's. Mike, just like us, is supposed to read between the lines right now.
In conclusion, I think the Duffer Brothers may not have actually fucked up as badly as we thought, but instead created some somewhat genius foreshadowing and parallelling.
Some of the evidence supporting Mike not being in love with El is brutal. No, but seriously.
In s3, when El's leg is injured, instead of Mike putting his arm around her waist, allowing him to take some of the weight off her injured leg, he puts his arm around her shoulder, basically having the exact opposite affect of taking the weight off of her, instead just adding more weight for her to have to carry.
Now, I’m not coming at Mike here, I’m actually coming at the writers, because this choice here has everything to do with them using this gesture to signal Mike’s lack of feelings for El, even at the expense of realism.
I say this bc any person with common sense, including Finn and everyone around him and Millie filming these shots, would've known it looked unnatural for Mike to be adding more weight onto El as opposed to taking some off of her.
Tumblr media
This means that what Mike did here, Finn was directed to do, and therefore it was for a specific reason.
And we know they could have easily made the opposite choice, because they show us Max AND Lucas doing it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
See how putting an arm around El's waist looks so much more natural? Because homegirl is injured and clearly needs help taking weight off her leg to qualm some of the pain she's experiencing there, which is why Max and Lucas are shown here doing it the correct way.
And so, why can't Mike do the same? Why are the writers making a point to show Mike being incapable of simply taking some weight off of El, instead doing the exact opposite?
I don't think it's as deep as Mike not being able to do something intimate, and that's bc, again we see Max and Lucas doing it.
I honestly think what they're trying to convey with this choice here, is that Mike thinks he's helping El, when he is in fact doing the opposite despite his best efforts. The implications of that and how that sort of aligns with their romantic relationship and what it leads to at the end of s3, going into s4, is pretty spot on.
I do think Mike thinks he's doing the right thing by being with El instead of voicing any doubts at the end of s3, because he is under the assumption that she is in love with him. I do think he believes he is indebted to her and that this is the least he can do after everything they've been through together, which has mostly been riddled with romantic pressures and so continuing that instead of disputing it seems like the only option anyways. Not to mention, he does care for her deeply, so it's not hard to imagine that he's a teenage boy confusing deep care for love (he literally tells us this is his problem when he can only say care and not love to El's face... but that's a whole other conversation).
Still, when it's all said and done, Mike's not actually doing El any favors by being with her romantically, if that is not what he truly wants.
Because that's the sad truth about all of this, which is that you would never want someone to be with you just because you want them. If you knew that they truly couldn't have those feelings for you, you'd want to know, right? You don't deserve someone just because you have deep feelings for them. And I think there's so many layers to this idea, bc many people are capable of not giving Byler a chance bc they truly believe Mike could never return Will's feelings. Will also feels this way atp, so though it hurts, he rips the band aid off, because he would never want Mike to be with him just out of pity or something. No one would want that. And so it all really comes down to who Mike truly loves romantically and wants to be with. And the right thing to do, even if it hurts someone, is to be honest, because being with them just bc you think that will make them happy is never going to be enough if you aren't truly feeling it, or worse, feel it for someone else.
We see how Mike's inability to be honest with El at the end of s3, leads to a season of Mike feeling deeply insecure and undeserving of the love El has to offer him, and even though he does try, he always comes up short. Despite Mike putting up this front that they are the perfect couple, the details are telling us something is off. And it gives him away.
Another example that I think is very similar to this loaded gesture from Mike to El in s3, is the scene in s4 when they hug in the airport.
Common sense ppl, picture this: You're reuniting with your long distance girlfriend. Then suddenly, she runs up to you, with her arms wide open, and instead of opening your arms wide to embrace her properly, you take the bouquet of flowers you brought her as a gift, and shove them against your chest just as she approaches to hug you, effectively squishing the present you got for her (a pretty delicate present at that) for no reason other than to... what exactly?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like?? El isn't even squishing the present Mike, she's trying to hug you, dude! Your gf is trying to hug you properly and you threw the gift you got for her in between you so you could throw in a careful! x3??
Again, this has less to do with Mike's thoughts and reasoning behind this gesture in a literal sense, and more to do with the simple fact that this is a narrative choice! Mike is not a real person! There are real people sitting down and writing this and actors are having to do multiple takes to act it out. What feels natural for a situation is going to be what is often chosen 9 times out of 10, because of realism and wanting the audience to see stuff happening that is believable. That 1 time though, when it's not being done the way it would usually be, is usually because there's a specific reason for it.!
So the question really is, not why is Mike doing this, but why are the writers having Mike do this, and what message are they trying to convey about Mike's feelings based on his behavior, in these moments where he's just not capable of committing to El genuinely, one way or another?
The way that Mike talks about El screams idolization to me. Do I think he loves her? Yes. I do think he cares about her. Do I think he’s IN love with her. No. If he actually was in love with her, I feel like he’d talk about traits and qualities of hers that he loves that are beyond just her powers. Like how Jonathan and Nancy explained why they love each other. They were actual meaningful traits and qualities. I don’t know what Mike loves about El beyond her powers.
Tumblr media
This is literally the first thing that comes out of his mouth regarding El last season. Like, yes, that’s an amazing thing that she did, Mike. Can you also mention something else, though? What else do you like about her? What else do you admire about her?
Tumblr media
It’s clear that Mike struggles with low self esteem and doesn’t view himself in a positive light. He doesn’t see his own self worth. To Mike, he’s unimportant. He’s a nobody. He’s nothing except a nerd, a loser, a freak who’s been bullied his entire life. He has El on this extremely high pedestal and feels like he can’t measure up to how incredible and amazing she is, because she’s a superhero. That’s what he continues to focus on. It’s not El’s fault that he feels this way either. She’s never talked about how amazing she is because she has powers. She’s never made it seem like she’s above anyone or better than anyone due to her powers. If anything, she’s talked about how she feels like a monster because she’s different. She feels like she doesn’t belong anywhere. She even voices that to Mike.
Tumblr media
El cries to Mike, doubting that he loves her anymore because he never says it. He can’t even write it. And what does Mike tell her in response to that? Does he tell her that he loves her? It’d be the perfect time to say it if he does. She’s crying and could use some clarity and reassurance. But no, he doesn’t tell her that he loves her. Instead he tells her this. And of course brings up how she’s a superhero…
Tumblr media
Even when he finally voices that he loves her, it falls flat to me and feels off. As the audience, we know that Mike’s initial reaction to finding El in the woods was not love at first sight. He wanted to get her back to wherever she came from and continue to search for Will. So yeah, that’s not true. Maybe he forgot what he was genuinely feeling in that moment? It’s either that or he’s knowingly lying to her. And then when he explains why he loves her… when we finally get to hear the reasons why…
Tumblr media
BAM! Again… it all circles back to her being a superhero. He loves her for exactly who she is… a superhero who can fly and move mountains and… yeah… the momentum died when Mike brought up that. El’s reaction to that didn’t look positive either. I just felt so awkward and uncomfortable and confused watching this monologue. Seeing Will’s reaction and having him in frame didn’t help at all. Let’s not forget he basically had to push Mike to not stop and continue talking to El by reminding him that he was the heart. Why’d they choose to do that? All it did was make my heart break even more for Will. Especially after watching him give Mike the meaningful painting he made for him and the beautiful monologue where he disguised his feelings as El’s.
Tumblr media
If they wanted me to root for M*leven, they could’ve easily had El say this to Mike. El loves Mike, right? She says that she loves him. I don’t exactly know why though. She’s never voiced why to Mike or to anyone else. I can’t solely blame Mike as the reason why I don’t ship M*leven when I don’t know why El is in love with Mike either. This could’ve been why, but no, the writers chose to not only make Will in love with Mike, but that he feels better for being different and loving him. All his life he was made to believe that he was a mistake for being different, but Mike makes him feel the complete opposite. He also mentions how El (he) is always going to need him. He says this to Mike, someone who wants and needs to be needed. You know what Will said meant the absolute world to Mike. It was exactly the kind of thing he needed to hear. How the hell do you top this?? Why would they choose to do this? Why make Will in love with Mike? Why make him have this type of love for Mike? The type of love Mike needs and wants? Why not have El feel this way about Mike and say this to him instead of Will? Throughout season 4 Mike and El just seemed to make each other feel bad and insecure pretty much the entire time. Not on purpose or knowingly, though. I don’t believe that they want or mean to make each other feel that way. They’re just not good for each other relationship wise. At least not from what I’ve seen so far. I have no idea how they’re gonna turn it around in the final season. Also, they’re just gonna throw away Will’s love for Mike? They used Will’s love for Mike to fix M*leven’s relationship then? And Will gets what? Nothing? No love for the gay character who’s unconditionally in love with his best friend? He should just be happy that his friends and family accept him for who he is? Because we know they will. That’s not going to be shocking. What would be shocking is if they didn’t. I don’t think that’s the type of twist the writers would want to do. That’d be beyond horrible. So yes, Will should just be happy and thankful that his family and friends don’t hate him for being gay. He doesn’t need love like everyone else. We don’t need to see the only gay character experience love and a relationship. Or maybe we will with some random, last second, half assed love interest. Oooo yay! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
HEYY YOUR SO PRETTY BTW AND I LOVE YOUR BLOG
the ask :
so, i wanted to get ur opinion on s3 mike. such as, what he was going through and his internalized homophobia. things like that!
maybe some things w/ him and his relationship w/ el too!
THANKS FOR ANSWERING IF U DO ANSWER :D
I’m gonna pretend that I’m fine after weeks of getting flustered just staring at this in my inbox! Thank you, anon!!! 🥺🥺 You’re making me blush! But, uh, anyways! Let’s talk about Mike Wheeler! 💙
I think that Mike in season 3 is the most interesting version of himself in the entire show because of how hidden his story becomes. In all other seasons, Mike cries openly with other people and expresses his sadness and fears over Will and El.
In season 3, though? Besides the finale, the tearful goodbyes narrated by Hopper, we never see Mike truly cry and explicitly talk through why. Sure, it can be pretty readily implied that it’s because of the Byers leaving, but we don’t hear that aloud. We don’t see exactly who’s on Mike’s mind as those cars pull away. We're left with silent and unsure stares, looks of seeming regret or something else unknown.
Tumblr media
Season 3 is truly a huge turning point for Mike, he’s losing his girlfriend and arguably his closest friend in the Party, and it's so easily overlooked because it all happens at the very end of the final episode. Whereas El goes through hell and fights to connect to Billy and save her friends, where Max also feels the weight of his loss, where Will gets his heartbreaking scene at Castle Byers - all the Party members who are very linked to Mike get their emotional moments that season, and we know exactly why they cry.
But Mike dances around his emotions all season long. In consulting Lucas to deal with breaking up and making up with El, in trying to tell El that he loves her without ever saying it, in fighting with Will because "it's not [his] fault [Will doesn't] like girls."
Tumblr media
Oh, Mike. I really don't think that Mike was out to hurt Will when he said that. Rather, it's a culmination of heteronormativity and the poor relationship that he has with El and trying to compensate for it. I interpret the outburst as him saying, 'it's not my fault that I'm in a relationship and you're not, so you wouldn't get it.' And by extension, Will being in a relationship would require, normatively, being with a girl.
But at the same time, for a jab that deep - I can't help but question more.
Mike could have said, "it's not my fault you don't like anyone!" or "don't bring her into this!" or even as simple as, "you wouldn't understand!" But no. Mike takes the direct train to sexuality station and brings up the fact that El is a girl. So it seems to me that Mike is very likely harboring something in his heart about why El being a girl is important for him to argue.
But we never know for sure. This moment is never addressed again due to the Mind Flayer’s sudden return. And so it’s up to us as the audience to decide what we think of Mike’s statement. And personally, as I’m sure many of you believe, too, I think that Mike is projecting and trying to hide the fact that he doesn’t like girls onto Will, pushing away his problems to someone he trusts who’s more similar to himself than he realizes.
Tied to his inability to say to El’s face that he loves her, to the fact that they've - reportedly from Hopper - kissed all Summer long with no mention of meaningful conversation, to the very surface-level relational mending his makes by calling El’s outfit “cool” and giving her candy, to the very end of the season where Mike once again denies saying that he loved El just before an open-eyed kiss and a face like this:
Tumblr media
Mike doesn’t need to say anything about that kiss for me to know that that’s not the reaction of someone who’s perfectly happy to be back together with his ex-girlfriend. So do I wish that we had a moment of vulnerability for Mike where he expressed his heart in season 3? Yes, but his nonverbals spoke volumes.
So, yeah, I think that in season 3, Mike is very much gay, but he he acts cautiously and self-preservingly because trauma is drowning everything out.
And what is this trauma? I know that I’m working backwards, but I need to bring up that Mike was separated from El for so long in the time of season 2, and I think that that makes him so attached to her in season 3. Think about what else he says in that scene when he admits his love: “I love her and I can’t lose her again.”
As sweet as it is to be reunited to El by the end of season 2, it’s not a clean reunion for Mike. He’s in shambles when he learns that Hopper was lying to him and not letting El even tell Mike that she’s okay.
Tumblr media
Not to mention that this isn’t his first but second time almost losing her to the monster that season.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Because of this unstable connection, I think that Mike has built a protective relationship with El, one that focuses on keeping her rather than knowing her, and we see how that all unfolds with his superficial “superhero” complex he has of her in season 4. Season 3 was just the beginning.
And so I think that Mike in season 3 stands as a version of himself that’s confused protectiveness with love. Even though he arguably behaves with that same mindset all the time, it’s at its highest during season 3 because of his never-ending insistence to help El even if she’s capable to do things by herself. Mike isn’t just clingy, he’s worried. Worried for her life. There’s no time to worry about where the problems in their relationship arise, there’s only time to fix them and go back to how they were at equilibrium - when things were normal.
Thus, Mike behaves rather stubbornly. He’s insistent and defensive, not letting a single thing slip through the cracks and risk any more hurt. In doing so, his personality is left far under the surface and unexplored. He only acts to stir up emotions rather than reflect on them, because any pausing to think will only confuse him more. He’s looking ahead, looking at the light, holding onto everything good he has with all the propriety of a 13/14-year-old who has a heart bigger than his head.
Simply put, Mike is a bit of an anti-hero this season. And I think that it's because of this that he starts to get most controversial for the audience.
I’m clearly a Mike apologist, but I genuinely don’t think that he’s out to hurt anyone when he argues with others this season. He’s just stubborn and loud about it, which can definitely be to his fault at times. But in the end, when it comes down to who he loves, I think that season 3 is the era of change, and that ending scene with Hopper’s letter paints the perfect setup for the next seasons to reveal that Mike has a lot more going on under the surface that’s causing all of this. Maybe some regrets, things he wishes he could “turn back the clock” on, regarding, say, Will and El and how he treats them platonically and romantically? Just a thought.
Tumblr media
The question of the day for Mike in season 3 stands: is he being selfish or selfless? And I think that it’s a mix of both, blended in with some heavy confusion due to role changing (not needing to protect El) and uncertain affections (not knowing how to figure out what he has with Will).
So, yeah. All in all, I think that Mike is really closeted in season 3 and doesn’t realize it until the final episode, and I honestly love him for it. As someone who’s gone through similar hurdles of internalized homophobia as a teen, it’s really heartwarming to see him grow and figure things out, even if the journey is far from perfect. It’s a humble origin story. And if he somehow ends up being straight and Byler isn’t endgame, well. I’ll be upset at the writers, but the impact still stands.
i can’t get over “we’re friends. we’re friends.” and “are ‘friends’ electric?” on mikes official Spotify playlist, and Dustin saying “you can feel it… the electricity” after Lucas says he was just holding Max’s hand in s2 because she was scared (just like when Mike held Will’s in s2 because he was scared) and Mike’s too Spotify song being “Small Town Boy”, a song referring to the oppression and mistreatment of closeted gay youths, set during the 80’s. And Troy literally tripping Mike after specifically targeting Will for being Queer and Mike later pushing Troy due to Troy, again, targeting Will’s queerness, but specifically talking to Mike when he says this.
And Karen’s “with everything going on with will (…) I never want you to have to hide anything from me” speech in s1 paralleling jonathon’s speech to will in s4 which we know was alluding to his sexuality, for sure, and eleven literally being in the CLOSET (where mike stored her) during this conversation with Karen. And Mike, having a one-way sign pointing to his closet. And Mike saying, “it’s not my fault you don’t like girls” in s3 despite being called clueless by multiple sources.
And Mike saying “the last year had been weird” in regards to their friendship/Will being in California and El saying “will has been acting weird, I think he may like someone” about Will. And Mike saying you can have more than one best friend in s1, like literally fighting dustin on it, and then in s4, specifically mentioning “max, lucas and dustin… they’re great… they’re great… but it’s hawkins. it’s not the same without you.” even though he was pulling away from will? and dustin saying mike always complains about joyce telemarketer job because he can’t make it through the line, and will saying mike only called a couple of times, and the government listening to phone calls being a reoccurring theme in st, and el hiding from the government, and in s3, mike telling el he will call her on dustin’s cerebro. And Will confirming he was also pulling away in “so if you felt like she was ever pulling away or being mean” and “not just listening but hearing” and i didn’t say it, you didn’t have to, and yes! yes that makes total sense! and will understanding mike to a deeper level than even the audience at times. and will thinking that they were going to play games for the rest of their lives (still believing this in s4 despite everything! and includes el! it doesn’t matter!) and will feeling like a mistake. and mike feeling like he is just some nerd. and el telling mike they are different. and in s3, the motif of “different species” and mike making will feel like he is not a mistake at all. and mike and will repeatedly being on the same page. ‘welcome to my world’. mike being unable to balance his relationships with el and will. mike no longer calling el in s2 when his main focus is on el. despite what he said, mike sticking by will’s side post reunion with el. “in the closet at the rink o maria” and mike showing no interest in girls. and mike growing out his hair and changing his look because of eddie. and once again, nancy saying she thought mike was acting weird because of will
and I’m spending romantic time with my girlfriend as Will and Mike do the exact same things Lucas and Max do, Mike even had wrapped his arm around Will’s shoulders the same way in s2. And Mike continuing to look to support from Will despite his non-interest in girls. And Mike (and Will’s) non-reaction to the Sauna Scene. And Dustin and Lucas’ obvious attraction to other females - Dustin with his crush on Nancy, asking others to dance. Lucas saying girls don’t like them in 4x1. Mike needing guidance from his friends when making any step with El.
“Our son? With a girl?” *scoffing” and Mike/Nancy’s best friends both going missing in s1, but Mike showing an obvious difference in how he acts about it, and Mike saying he fell in love with El the moment he saw her, but contradicting himself later by saying he wants to send her back, and focus on what’s more important (Will) and literally swatting her away when she tries to comfort him but always seeking out Will for comfort, and heroes playing when they find Will’s body, and then again when the Byers leave - Mike staring at their house - and hugging his mom just like he did after the scene with Will’s body found.
Mike’s OPEN EYES when Eleven kisses him after telling him she loves him (something he tried to do) (and like, I get the shock - I do! - but really? Keeping his eyes literally open?) and Mike pushing El’s hands off him when they are making out, and El the one to usually cling onto him, and Mike constantly lying to El despite “friends don’t lie” (?) and Mike nodding to “sometimes it’s hard to tell people the truth, especially if they won’t like it” and Mike saying “it’s not destiny, it’s not fate, it’s just dumb luck” despite later saying that it was love at first sight later.
Mike saying he loves her with and without her powers but then focusing on her powers later in the speech - this whole speech (pushed by Will) ending with him telling her she needs to fight/she can move mountains/she is his superhero - and saying she saved the world twice when really, wasn’t it three times? but she specifically saved will twice.
mike unobservant to el’s bullies but observant to will and his behavior. the awkwardness at the airport. will sabotaging the whole day by his behaviors even tho his gf was quite literally just humiliated. ??? mike lacking to comfort el after her mistreatment. not only this but antagonizing her further. mike getting mad at will for not telling him. mike looking at will on the ride home from the roller rink. mikes stupid custom made heart shirt always pointing at will.
the music overlaying of “being different” “you’re the heart”, the fact that it’s called “you’re the heart” even tho that’s what WILL TELLS MIKE and the scene is supposed to be between m*leven.
mike freaking out when he looks over at will and he catches him looking. mike looking at will multiple times where will is not looking at him. Murray’s “I’m sensing tension” and “experiencing sexually” and mike looking saddened when will says El commissioned the painting.
Mike not seeming to be excited to reunite with El. Mike saying he did not know what to say. Or how to explain himself. (Until Will is standing next to him and provided him some material to work with.) Mike being afraid Eleven won’t need him anymore and his parallels to Brenner. Eleven realizing she does not need Brenner.
Mike joining D&D despite acting like he was too cool for it last season, contrast to Lucas who actually seemed to grow out of it a bit. Mike seemingly out of character, his actions and behaviors not making sense or matching old behavior, argyle literally saying he is wearing a knock off, Mike saying El will realize he is just some nerd - !
Mike being can only referred to as hopeless and oblivious. Mike’s biggest smiles this season coming from scenes with Will. Mike’s behavior/words so contradictory because the only time we see him act like he doesn’t know how to live is when he is without Will.
Mike have it a binder full of Will’s drawings; with them all over his basement and in his room, but no sights of El anywhere.
Mike acting like he doesn’t give a shit about D&D all summer but asking what Will is doing when he puts D&D in the donation box. Showing that he was faking his disinterest (and this being confirmed in s4 with Hellfire)
El asking him if they’d be like brother and sister before Mike kisses her. (After quite literally describing brother/sister relationship between them before)
“Best thing I ever did” - a totally STRAIGHT thing to say to a friend - contrasting both JOYCE AND JONATHAN’s words to Will which were much more familial love sounding, showing that yes. That was totally possible for it to be done differently but nope. Gotta make it sound GAY! And ROMANTIC!
Like literally just need answers to these questions! And more. Thanks. Like these are genuine plot holes to me if they don’t address all of Mike’s queer coding lol.
Whenever you doubt Byler, remember that Will was planned to be in love with Mike from the start. Remember that Finn and Noah had to take a chemistry test. Remember that Mike has never had moments like that with anyone but Will. Remember the Venkman Lucas/Max Mike/Will foreshadowing. Remember every heart to heart Will and Mike have had. Remember the Variety interview. Remember Brett Gelman. Remember Eleven wasn't supposed to come back after season 1. Remember how most of the cast ships Byler. Remember how Byler has way more chemistry than Marijuana. Remember that the Duffers have taken inspiration from many shows with best friends to lovers tropes. Remember that Shawn Levi is for Byler. Remember Finn and Noah are for Byler. Remember the scripts. Remember the Eyewitness parallel. Remember the Byler docs. Remember nobody believing us about Will being gay and calling us delusional when we were right. Remember that Mike and El have nothing in common, and never have normal conversations. Remember the Duffers saying they don't believe in love at first sight. Remember Mosquito breakups being shown as comedic. Remember Byler fights being shown as a serious breakup. Remember Season 2. Remember the final placements in Season 4. Remember the show cares about detail. Remember Megamind is paralled to doomed relationships. Remember that, Byler, Jancy, Jopper, and Lumax are endgame couples, and have been all paralleled to each other at least once. Remember how the four endgames are always standing together. Remember the Duffers calling Mildew puppy love. Remember the cast's reaction to the monologue. Remember the stupid ass monologue in general. Remember Causeineedu. Remember NaturallyBrielle. Remember Millie improvising in almost all Mormon scenes. Remember the duffers mentioning one of their favorite shows growing up was a show where a man fell in love with his best friend who had a gf, and it turned out he shared those feelings. Remember that Mozzarella is paralled to Byler, but Byler is always the better version (You make me feel better for being different/You think I am a monster [] I say it/You didn't have to) and many more. Remember that Byler is absolutely going to be endgame, and they wouldn't build it up for 4 seasons for it to be unreciprocated. The duffers make mistakes, everyone does, but they know what they're doing (they made a hit show) and if you're still doubtful, it isn't just them writing it. Also, we have the music, the sets, the outfits, and camera angles on our side as well. Let MinnieMouse deny it all they want, but Byler is endgame along with Jopper, Jancy and Lumax. We have already won. It's been confirmed many times before, we just have to wait to prove it. And in those to years more proof will come, and we've gotten a lot of it already and it's only been 2 weeks. I know that sounded really stupid, but I see a few people giving up hope that the Duffers can pull this off (including myself at times) and I think despite all the proof we have we all need to hear this, especially with the Malaria shippers flooding everyone's inboxes lmfao. Anyways have and anazing day/night Byler nation. I am done with my rant.
The Bet
Summary: Dustin cannot believe Eddie “The Freak” Munson has a girlfriend (as pretty as Galadriel, no less), and the boys seem to think the same. Max and Robin disagree, arguing that Eddie is, in fact, a catch. They decide to settle things once and for all through a bet.
Pairing: Eddie Munson x Reader
Word count: 4,9k
Warnings: cursing
Notes: I'm absolutely in love with this one, it's honestly my pride and joy (at least so far). The idea for this one came to me during an Invertebrates class (should I have be paying more attention to the class? probably, but I did end up doing well overall in that subject, so). If you spot any mistakes, please feel free to warn me and I'll correct it right away, and feedback is always welcome and appreciated. I hope you truly enjoy this story.
This is part of a series, but most parts can be read as standalones (so far they are published in cronological order, but this will change).
Reader is female, but no physical descriptions provided (other than being gorgeous, that is!)
Next part | Masterlist | Read on AO3
“I call bullshit.”
“Dustin!” El exclaimed.
“There’s no fucking way you have a girlfriend!”
“Dustin.” El gritted her teeth “Don’t be mean.”
“What? I’m just saying” Dustin explained, completely unphased “that out of all the people sitting on this table, he is the least likely to have a girlfriend.”
“The same has been said about you and yet…” Max smirked in that sardonic way of hers, making the others laugh.
“Do not bring Suzie-poo into this!” the boy rolled his eyes, but his shoulders tensed in embarrassment.
Lunch time at Hawkins High was never a quiet affair. More often than not someone, most likely someone from their usual table (even more often than not that someone was Eddie), would be doing something rambunctious that would attract the attention of every other student in the cafeteria. They had all learned to ignore it and fully embraced their nerd/outcast situation, almost always wearing their Hellfire Club t-shirts. Today, Dustin was the one drawing attention to them, fervorously denying what he had just been told.
“Come on, people.” he opened his arms, gesturing around the table “Let’s face it. Other than Mike, Lucas and I, who already have girlfriends, the most probable person here to get a girl would definitely be Robin.”
“Ouch, Henderson,” Steve punched the boy next to him on the shoulder, with a little more force than necessary “uncalled for. And besides, all she does all day is mope about Vickie, without ever making a move.”
“Uh, actually” Robin piped up “I just asked Vickie out, we’re gonna watch Letter to Brezhnev this weekend.”
Steve groaned, while Dustin’s face conveyed something akin to ‘I told ya’.
“Actually, Eddie, I’ve been meaning to ask, if this whole thing between me and Vickie does work out, can I bring her to one of our sessions?”
“Be my guest.” the man, who was currently being talked about as if he wasn’t even there, answered, his smile never weavering.
“Guys, we’re losing focus here.” Dustin clapped his hands “Let’s get back to the matter at hand: Eddie, your so called girlfriend.”
“What about her?”
“Tell us more about her.”
Eddie’s smile grew impossibly bigger.
“She’s everything my humble heart could ever ask for.”
“Humble, yeah, right.” Steve scoffed, earning him a slap on the back of the head from Robin.
“She is immeasurably intelligent, infinitely kind and would never hesitate to help those in need. Not to mention, she is the most beautiful creature to have ever walked this Earth.”
“How beautiful are we talking?” Lucas asked.
“Galadriel level of beauty.”
A bunch of ‘wow’s and even an impressed whistle, courtesy of Robin herself, sounded from the group.
“What does that even mean?” asked Steve. Dustin narrowed his eyes at the older boy and didn’t even bother with an answer, before addressing his DM again.
"Bullshit! What’s her name?”
Eddie’s once dreamy smile turned mischievous.
“You wouldn’t believe me if I told you.”
Dustin scoffed.
“There is our answer. You are making her up.”
“No, I’m not.” Eddie said, a strange calmness in his voice.
“Yes, you are.”
“Why would I make her up?”
“I dunno, you are our DM, you literally come up with the most creative stories as a hobby, which, might I add, might as well be your side job at this point!”
“Why have you never introduced her to us?” Eleven asked, only slightly offended that her new friend hadn’t deemed them worthy of knowing the inner mechanisms of his private life.
Some people shook their heads in agreement.
“She works at the time of our campaigns.”
“How convenient.” Lucas exclaimed.
“If you really want to meet her so badly I’ll bring her around some day.” Eddie shrugged.
"How about this?” Dustin lowered his voice conspiratorially “10 bucks she’s made up and you’re bullshitting all of us.”
“Dustin!” Max hissed.
“I’m in.” Lucas said.
“Lucas!”
“Guys, don’t you think this is a little… cruel? Making a bet at someone’s expense?” El hesitantly pointed out.
Everyone looked in Eddie’s direction at the head of the table, whose face didn’t give anything away.
“Nah.” all the boys, excluding Will and surprisingly including Eddie, said.
“I’m with Dustin.” Mike said, to which El glared at him “What? Easiest money I’ll ever make in my life.”
“Make it 20 that not only she’s real, but she’s also gorgeous.” Robin chimed in.
“Thank you Buckley.” Eddie bowed his head at her.
“Seriously?” Steve almost shouted.
“What, Eddie is a pretty nice guy. If I wasn’t into…” she trailed off, glaring at Steve next to her as he mouthed the word ‘boobies’ “other things,” she emphasized “I’d definitely date him.”
“You are so on, Rob.” Steve indeed shouted this time “You’re going down.”
“El?” Mike asked his girlfriend.
“I don’t know. I’m not really comfortable doing this.”
“Me neither.” Will agreed.
“I’m with Robin on this one.” it was Max's turn to say.
“Alright!” Eddie grabbed a pencil and a rumpled sheet of paper (math’s homework, they noted) “It’s two against four: Buckley and Mayfield vs Harrington, Henderson, Sinclair and Wheeler. Should I mark 20 bucks for everyone?”
The boys, who originally opened the bet at $10 each, all agreed.
“So that makes the final prize a total of… $120.” he eyed all the people on the table with a mysterious grin, his voice morphing into the one he used while performing as Dungeon Master during their campaigns “Do you, my mighty Fellowship, accept this challenge?”
Everyone looked at Dustin, the one who had come up with all that mess, to seal their next step. He stood up and extended his hand for Eddie to shake.
“Hell yeah.”
Tumblr media
“I’m telling you, there is absolutely no way in this world, and in the Upside Down, that Eddie is telling the truth.”
Dustin was leading the group around downtown Hawkins on their way to the movie theater for a showing of Top Gun.
“Dustin, man, don’t you think this is going a little too far?” Will asked, a worried look crossing his features.
“I mean, why does he feel the need to lie to us like that?” Lucas interrupted “Not having a girlfriend is not something to be ashamed of.”
“Tell that to Steve.” Dustin smirked, high fiving his buddies, to which El, Will and Max rolled their eyes.
“Maybe because he isn’t lying?” Max said, crossing her arms, annoyed “Has that ever crossed your minds? And that maybe he hasn’t introduced her because you are simply too immature to handle it?”
Mike, Lucas and especially Dustin had the decency to look sheepish for a fraction of a second before diving right back on their shenanigans.
“I mean who in their right minds would date Eddie of all people?” Dustin changed the subject, making Max wave her arms incredulously, giving up.
“Why is it so hard to believe someone might be interested in Eddie?” El asked, half trying to defend her friend and half genuinely curious.
“Well, for one he’s an outcast.” Lucas said.
“So are we all.” Max retorted.
“He’s a freak with a very peculiar set of interests.” Mike gave his input.
“That doesn’t really mean anything, we all enjoy D&D and rock music as well.”
“And he’s on his way to have to do the senior year for the fourth time.” Dustin finished.
“Oh, come on, give the guy a break!” Max snapped “You know what he went through this year, it kinda makes sense that school wasn't his top priority.”
El nodded, agreeing.
“Besides” she said, a tilt to her head indicating she actually meant it “Eddie is a really nice guy and anyone would be lucky to date him.”
“Would you?”
“Would I what?”
“Date Eddie.” Mike told her “Would either of you date Eddie given the chance.”
Eleven and Max shared a look, not even hesitating before they answered.
“Yes.”
“Absolutely.”
“What?!” the boys asked in disbelief.
“He’s a really nice guy!” Max said, linking arms with El.
“He’s really funny.” El complemented, adding a skip to their step.
“And he’s pretty good looking.”
“His hair is cool.”
“And have you seen his tattoos?”
“He’s bitchin’.” El finished, smiling.
Mike and Lucas looked at each other, only slightly worried, while Dustin scoffed, shaking his head in disappointment.
Arriving at the theater, they went to buy the tickets.
“Okay, let’s entertain this crazy idea for a second and say she is real.” Dustin simply couldn’t let the subject go “What do you guys think she’s like?”
“Like him to some degree, otherwise they wouldn’t be together.” Lucas rushed in “They have to have a lot in common.”
After a moment of silence Mike spoke up.
“I could see Eden dating him.”
“Eden?” Dustin asked, perplexed “Suzie’s older sister? When did you- you know what? I don’t even wanna know.”
“But she’s dating Argyle now.” Will pointed out.
“True.”
They finally arrived at the snack booth, a familiar face behind the counter that they knew pretty well.
“Hey, look who it is! My favorite person in the whole world!” Dustin called your name very enthusiastically, a gigantic, very dramatic smile plastered on his face while he leaned his forearm over the counter “Whats up?”
“Flattery will get you nowhere, Henderson.” you rolled your eyes, already used to the boy’s behavior.
“But why?” he whined, head thrown back dramatically “You always give El an extra piece of candy every single time, how come she’s your favorite?”
“Whaaat? I do no such thing.” you retorted, sending a conspiratory wink in El's way “Even suggesting that is an offense to my honor.”
“Ugh, I’m so sorry, miss ‘do-no-wrong.”
You giggled. No matter how much it seemed to annoy you, you absolutely loved those kids and would do everything for them.
“Same as always?”
“You know us too well.” Mike answered.
While you went about preparing the kids’ snacks, they (read Dustin, Mike and Lucas) quickly created a game out of people watching, much to the annoyance of the rest of the group.
“What about her?” Lucas pointed out a girl, plain clothes and nothing truly remarkable about her appearance.
“Nah, they don’t seem like they really match.” Mike countered back before pointing to a stuck up looking girl who seemed annoyed to just exist “How about that one?”
The other boys looked the girl up and down before shaking their heads.
Dustin perked up when his eyes landed on someone coming out of a showing of Poltergeist II.
“What about her?!” he pointed out a woman in darker clothes, excitement lacing his voice “She seems like she would be perfect for him. Look, she even likes horror films!”
Max rolled her eyes so hard they almost popped out of the sockets.
“If he was interested in older women he would be drooling over Mike’s mom.” the corner of her lips lifted in a tiny smirk “How did you describe her? ‘Smoking hot like chicken wings’?”
Mike’s face turned red as he turned to face Dustin.
“What did you say about my mom?!” his next move would have surely resulted in an immeasurable amount of pain for Dustin (and probably a trip to the hospital) had you not intervened at that very moment.
“Alright! Here you go.” you started putting the snacks over the counter “Three large popcorns, one with extra butter, two large sodas, two medium sodas,” you then proceeded to hand the items one by one “Blue Raspberry Airheads for Will, Cry Baby Tears for Max, Gummi Bears for Lucas, Licorice Rockies for Dustin, Watermelon and Cherry Nerds for Mike and last, but not least, a packet of Spree for El.”
As you were sliding the packet towards El, the girl noted that you had given her a Caramello bar, hidden under the other candy. That had been something you had been doing ever since she had first stopped by the theater you work at; she had been mesmerized at the assortment of sweets on display and simply could not choose one. You had overheard her telling her boyfriend that she had never tried any of those, and you had made it your life’s mission to give her as much candy as you could without getting busted by your boss just so she could figure out her favorite kind. So far, nothing had beaten Spree. She smiled at you, grateful for what you’ve been doing for her.
“Hey!” Dustin also seemed to have noticed the interaction “I saw that!”
You and El looked at each other, suppressing a smile.
“Saw what?” Eleven asked, a deadpan look on her face that only made Dustin more exasperated.
After paying and balancing all their food, the kids started heading towards the movie rooms. As they were walking away you called after them.
“Good luck trying to defeat Lareth the Beautiful!” you waved and then added under your breath so they could not hear from the distance “You’re gonna need it.”
“Thanks!” they all responded in unison, not giving it a second though.
After a moment of playful banter, Eleven decided to address something that had been on her mind since they got to the movie theater.
“What about her?”
The others shot her a confused look.
“What about who?” Will asked.
She nodded her head back at the counter where you were wiping out fallen kernels and elaborated, though it ended up sounding more like a question.
“As Eddie’s girlfriend?”
The boys who were in on the bet looked at each other before bursting out in hysterical laughter.
“Her?!” Lucas sputtered out “Dating Eddie ‘The Freak’ Munson?! Seriously El?”
“Little Miss Perfect, Goodie-Two-Shoes over there?” Dustin added “Who works at the nursing home during the week and volunteers at the animal shelter every other weekend?!”
“There is no way!” Mike doubled over.
“Never in a million years!”
“Absolutely not!”
El looked towards Will and Max for support, who only shrugged, as if having given up discussing the subject. But she didn’t miss the quiet look of agreement she saw crossing their faces.
On the other side of town, a similar conversation would take place only a few hours later.
“I’m telling you, Rob” Steve said, placing a recently returned copy of The Empire Strikes Back in its respective place on the shelf “if I can’t keep a girl interested in me for more than a week, there’s no way Munson has a girlfriend!”
Robin hummed, rearranging the collection of Planet of the Apes in the correct order.
“That’s not saying much, you know that, right?” she snickered.
He rolled his eyes at what she was implying.
“Let the guy be, Steve.” she moved on to the next row “If he says he has a girlfriend, then he has a girlfriend. I don’t know why it’s so hard to believe that.”
“We go to the same school as him, right? I don’t know if you noticed but girls aren’t exactly throwing themselves at him.”
“I don’t know if you noticed, dingus, but he’s almost three years older than us. He’s supposed to have graduated by now. I’m pretty sure his girlfriend was in his original class or something.”
“But we were freshmen when he was a junior!” he threw his arms up “I’m pretty sure we would have noticed if he started getting cozy with someone!”
“Steve,” the girl gave him a sad, almost resentful smile “you didn’t even notice me before we started working together last year. You only had eyes for Nancy.”
Steve was quiet, for he knew she was right.
“That and you let those two dickheads Tommy and Carol infiltrate your mind and hypnotize you into becoming a jock!” she tried lighting up the mood, knowing she had hit a sensitive spot for him, which seemed to work as he chuckled.
Their bonding was interrupted by the sound of the little bell over the door, signaling a new client had just come in. Robin started the whole customer service speech while walking slowly towards the counter.
“Hi, welcome to Family Video, how may we help you?” she stopped short once she realized it was you “Hi! Oh my god, I haven’t seen you in a while, how are you?”
“Hey, Robin! I’ve been good, a little busy but what’s new?” both of you giggled, Robin with a bit more flare than necessary.
Steve watched the interaction with a strange kind of fascination.
“What can I get for you today?”
“Let’s see…” you tapped your chin, deep in thought before asking with a hopeful tone “Is Lady and The Tramp available?”
“I got it!” Steve typed it down on the computer “Lucky for you, m’lady, it is.”
Robin stared at him as if he had grown a second head while he retrieved the tape.
“Can I get a second one? I really wanted to watch The Three Caballeros, but I think it’s kind of mandatory to watch Saludos Amigos first.”
The girl checked in and sure enough, it was available. While she checked you out, Steve was busy putting your tapes in a bag.
“Make sure to drop by more often.” Robin said “It’s been so long, we have to catch up eventually!”
“Yeah, come hang out with us sometime!” Steve added, immediately wincing at his own lack of subtleness.
“Will do.” you waved at them and walked out of the store.
Robin slowly turned towards her friend.
“What was that?”
“I don’t know! I kind of panicked!” he rubbed a hand over his face “Who was that anyway?”
“Duh,” Robin stated your name “only the smartest, sweetest and most beautiful girl in school in forever? Straight A’s, always super nice to everyone, incredibly well dressed, kind of a nerd, but no one gave her too much of a hard time?”
Steve continued to stare blankly at her. She sighed, giving up.
“I had the biggest crush on her in sophomore year while she tutored me in math, but she left the following year and I almost flunked without her help.”
Steve shrugged, not really remembering you at all.
“Now that I come to think of it, she used to hang out with Eddie quite a lot back then.”
“No!” he stared at the door you had recently left through “Do you think…?”
“I don’t know!” she shrugged, a seemingly victorious smile spreading across her face “Maybe?”
They stood in silence for a second.
“There is no way a girl as sweet and as hot as her would be interested in Munson of all people!”
“Come on, Steve, that’s so mean!”
Tumblr media
Almost a month had passed since that fateful lunch break. Lucas and Mike eventually settled down and forgot about the whole ordeal, but Steve and, especially, Dustin were relentless. Everyday they would bring up the subject of Eddie’s girl, to the point where the other members of Hellfire Club were starting to get annoyed.
“So, Eddie,” Dustin started accusingly, “where is that imaginary girlfriend of yours today?”
Everyone groaned.
“How many times do I have to tell you this?” Eddie rolled his eyes and rubbed both hands down his cheeks “She’s working!”
“At night? In the middle of the week?” Steve added, suspicion is his voice.
“She’s fresh off training so she gets the worst shifts.” Eddie explained, getting kind of tired of the matter.
“Hey, Steve?”
“Yeah, Henderson?”
“You know what that sounds to me?”
“What?”
“A bullshit excuse!” Dustin shouted, pointing his finger in Eddie’s face.
“Uhm excuse me.” a voice sounded from the end of the table “If you two old ladies have finished your daily 3 pm gossip over the window, can we go back to the game? How are we supposed to defeat Lareth if all you do is bicker all day long?!” Erica, who occasionally joined the party if she didn’t have too much homework, piped up, annoyed.
Dustin mumbled, clearly not done talking about it, when an idea struck him all of a sudden, making him punch the table, rattling all of the metal figurines.
“What the fuck was that for, Dustin?!” Max asked, startled, a look of angered surprise on her face that matched that of almost everyone there.
“S-sorry.” he answered, only slightly embarrassed “I-I’m just- excited to maybe finally defeat Lareth?”
He winced, not sounding the least bit convincing even to himself, but the others seemed to have bought it for now.
After the game, in which they hadn’t, in fact, managed to defeat Lareth the Beautiful and frankly almost got all killed trying to do so, Dustin pulled Erica aside, out of earshot from the others, especially Eddie.
“What do you want?” she hissed.
“I need a favor.”
“What makes you think I’d help you?” she crossed her arms petulantly.
“Please?”
She sighed and nodded for him to go on.
“I need you to spy on Eddie for me.”
“Uh, why?”
“We have a bet. He says he has a girlfriend, I think it’s bullshit. Steve, Mike and Lucas agree with me, while Robin and Max, the fools, think this girl is actually real.”
“And what do you need me for?”
“Follow him around, I don’t know. He would never suspect, you’re not part of the bet. Just try and prove that he’s actually lying to all of us”
She thought for a long moment.
“What’s in it for me?”
“What?” he squeaked.
“What’s in it for me?” she repeated with a smug expression “What do I get out of helping you?”
Dustin sighed.
“You can keep my share.”
Erica’s eyes widened and her jaw dropped open.
“Honestly? At this point I just want to prove I’m right. Join in, make the total amount larger and you can keep both yours and my share of it.”
She extended a hand for him to shake.
“It’s a pleasure doing business with you.” and she skipped away to catch up with Lucas.
Tumblr media
Dustin hadn’t heard from Erica since their conversation and his faith in her was beginning to waver. A couple more weeks went by before the girl finally joined the Club once more.
“Eddie.” was the first thing she said the minute she sat down in front of the board game “I heard there is a bet of sorts going around.”
“Yes there is, Sinclair the Second.” the man answered and, having a feeling where the conversation was going, grabbed the paper he previously wrote all the names (and it looked somehow even more crumpled than before).
“I’d like to join in.” she said, a large grin on her face.
“It’s $20 per person-” Eddie started explaining before she cut him off.
“Actually I’d like to add 30 bucks.” she said decisively.
Most people around the table looked at each other, impressed and apprehensive at the same time. Dustin on the other hand, nodded victoriously towards his buddies.
“Alright, I have to admit you’re bold, Sinclair the Second.” Eddie did the math “So that increases the final prize to $150. Which side are you joining?”
Erica looked towards Dustin, who discreetly nodded at her.
“I think she’s real.”
Dustin’s jaw dropped.
“Wh-aat?!” his voice cracked from surprise.
“I just don’t see why Eddie would lie, that’s all.” she shrugged nonchalantly.
Dustin shot her a murderous look while Eddie scribbled down her name alongside Max and Robin’s.
“That sure is a good thing. Because she was just talking about requesting to change shifts with a coworker who’s said something about wanting to take more care of his cat during the day.” Eddie finished writing with a flurish “So you might get to meet her pretty soon.”
“Yeah, right.” Lucas snickered, which prompted an elbow to his ribs from Max.
The game proceeded without much hitch after that. After the fiasco that was trying to defeat Lareth the Beautiful the last time everyone was a little apprehensive in trying to take him out again, that was, if they could even find where he lived. But, in a move of sheer luck, Eleven managed to figure out his hideout after scoring 17 while searching an abandoned moathouse. Now all they had to do was attack.
“But I must warn you, my fellow adventurers,” Eddie spoke, his low voice smooth and mysterious while his eyes roamed the face of everyone in the room “every action has consequences. Think through before you strike, for you might not come out of this alive.”
El, who had been feeling brave after a succession of favorably high rolls (which may or may not have had something to do with her powers when she felt she was going to score too low, but you’d never get that out of her as long as she lived), decided to speak up.
“I say we go for it.” everyone stared at her wide eyed “What? We had a lot of time to prepare, everyone has their health full and all their best weapons… we already lost once, what’s the worst that could happen?”
“She’s right.” Lucas agreed, grabbing the dice “Who wants to start?”
“I will.” Steve decided “I’m the weakest of us all, that way if something happens to me you still have a chance to escape and get stronger.”
“No, Steve.” Robin argued.
“No one gets left behind.” Max concluded “I’ll go first.”
“No, I will.” Mike tried ripping the dice out of Max’s hands.
“Come on, let me go first.” El tried to speak, but suddenly the metal doors squaked open, silencing everyone in the room.
Shyly, someone poked their head inside.
“Hey!” you spoke from your place by the door “I hope Im not too late?”
Eddie practically jumped out of his throne.
“Sweetheart!” he boomed, opening his arms “You are just in time! They are just about to face Lareth the Beautiful.”
“Again?” you asked, fully stepping inside the room.
“For good this time.” he answered with a mirthful smirk. “What are you doing here?”
“Mrs. Johnson let me off earlier from the nursing home. I managed to swap shifts with Mateo, so now I can come to your campaigns!”
Walking closer to the table, everyone gawked at your sudden appearance. You stopped beside the DM’s throne, but Eddie was quick to pull you sideways into his lap, where you landed giggling like a maniac. Turning your head over your shoulder, you pressed a light peck on his lips.
“No way…” Lucas gaped, shaking his head.
“Yes way.” Max retorted, nodding mesmerized.
“Hah!” Robin slapped both her hands on the table, pointing a finger at Steve in front of her.
Confused, you stared at Eddie, whose smile has never looked more smug.
“What is going on?”
“It is you?!” Dustin stood up so quickly his chair scraped on the floor before tumbling backwards onto the floor.
“Is what me?”
“You’re his girlfriend?” Steve started in awe, feeling a tiny pang of hurt on his chest.
“Uh, yeah.” you nodded, as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.
“How?” Mike all but shouted, Eleven smiling triumphantly at his side.
You and Eddie shared a look.
“You know, Wheeler,” Eddie started, smirking “when two people love each other-”
His speech was interrupted by a chorus of repeated ‘woah’s, Steve rushing to cover Erica’s years, Robin doing the same for El, all the while you chuckled at your boyfriend’s antics .
“There are children here, man.” Steve hissed.
“No, I mean it.” Dustin shook his head in disbelief “Why are you dating him ?”
“I told you would never believe me.” Eddie explained.
Your laughter turned into a dreamy smile.
“Eddie is such a sweetheart. He’s charming, he makes me laugh. And I know I can always count on him no matter what. I know he’ll always be there for me.” you beamed softly at him, before turning back to the party, a playful grin on your face “And it doesn’t hurt that he’s incredibly attractive.”
Dustin made a gagging noise while Eddie playfully flicked his hair over his shoulder.
“I mean, who could resist my witful charms, Henderson?”
Erica turned towards her brother, Dustin, Mike and Steve, a proud look on her face.
“Pay up, losers.” she made a come hither motion with her hand “I believe the four of you owe us $50 for each of us.”
She high-fived Robin and Max.
Dustin stared at her, a look of betrayal taking over his features.
“You agreed you’d help me.” he accused.
“No” she said matter-of-factly “I agreed to spy on Eddie for you. And I did.”
Eddie let out a fake gasp, holding an offended hand over his heart.
“You asked Sinclair the Second to spy on me?!”
Dustin held a hand up.
“That’s besides the point.” he turned back to Erica “What happened?”
“I spied on him, just like you asked. And what I found was the both of them” she nodded her head in your direction, where you were still draped over your boyfriend’s legs “being all lovey-dovey with one another. Y’all are just too dumb to see it.”
Dustin shook his head as if he still couldn’t believe it.
“Now that we’ve gotten this out of the way” Eddie’s voice suddenly shifted to the one he used as Dungeon Master “are you ready to take on Lareth the Beautiful once and for all?”
Everyone around the table shouted words of agreement and encouragement, including you. Dustin quickly grabbed the dice, ready to go first. He raised his arms, hands cupped around the dice, and started shaking them. Every member of the club, and now you, stared at him in anticipation, before he hesitated.
“Seriously, though, what do you see in him?”
“Dustin!”
Honestly, I don't think I would dislike mleven as much as I do if it weren't for the fact that the writers made it abundantly clear that there is no satisfying/happy ending for Mike, El or Will of mleven is endgame, which is especially apparent in s4. There genuinely was potential and that's why I think that there are still hard-core mlevens and why elmike is as popular as it is.
Maybe if Mike and El hadn't gotten back together at the end of s3 and had instead spent s4 trying to get back together, this time with a more mature approach where they don't ignore their friends and family to be with each other.
But like, what are the consequences for everyone's arc if mleven is endgame??? For Mike it means that his arc was about learning that even though he feels insecure in his relationship, he shouldn't be because he will always be needed (by the guy he's going to reject) as well as the fact it means he doesn't get an anti conformity arc. For El it means that for a girl who desires to learn more about herself and accept herself for who she truly is, including how she's different, she's going to end up with the guy who she perceives as normality personified (I'm going to make a post expanding on this idea at some point lol). For Will, who will always need Mike and believes that he will never get to have a relationship as he is romantically unlovable mainly due to his sexuality, he will be proved right after being rejected by the love of his life.
Like what kind of ending is that??? I'm not saying that El and Mike could have ever been as good of a couple as byler or lumax, just that they had potential to be a good endgame couple if it weren't for the way their arcs and relationships were deliberately written.
i think the one of the many reasons why mike’s monologue to will in s2 is more believable/genuine than the one to el in s4 is because he doesn’t paint out meeting will as something meant to be, or love at first sight, or destiny.
Tumblr media
we would never really know who wrote the tweet where the st writers say they do not believe in love at first sight, it could’ve been anyone since apparently sometimes it’s not even the writers tweeting, if im correct? but, it’s still important to include anyway because the writing shows it still.
Tumblr media
mike explicitly admits to will that meeting el was not destiny or fate, but pure dumb luck. in other words, there was no higher power driving them to be together no matter where they were in the world. it was just by chance. he then goes on to say that he only brought her in the house because she just needed someone, not that he magically fell in love - which is what he later contradicts by saying that he had immediately loved her in that moment. he lied. in s1, his first words when he sees el for the first time are quite literally, “it’s not will.” he initially planned to send her to an asylum after finding will.
that, plus the writer account saying they do not believe in love at first sight, shows that mike’s monologue to el in s4 is a load of bs.
mike’s monologue to will in s2 does the exact opposite, which is why it’s more believable.
not only does he not have to say ‘i love you’ to say ‘i love you,’ but in this scene, he does not give the universe credit for meeting will. there was no ‘destiny’ involved; he just happened to see will just as alone as he was and they bonded over it. mike emphasizes that it was his concious choice to approach and ask will to be his friend. he quite literally ends the monologue by saying, “it was the best thing i’ve ever done.” he gives himself the credit.
it was the best thing he ever done because of the life he’s lived with will. he did not know in that moment he met will that it was going to be best thing he’d ever done, he didn’t know how much he’d love him, he didn’t know the chaos that’d eventually come. all he knew was that he finally had a friend, and that’s what makes it so genuine and pure. the love grew naturally.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
there was no love at first sight, because the writers do not believe in that, nor does the writing itself. jopper was not love at first sight, their love took time. lumax was something that both didn’t expect. jancy was something both didn’t expect either, one already being in a relationship and simply sharing her condolences and the other a rejected loner with set opinions on others.
the only one that didn’t follow this formula was mike and eleven. mike didn’t consider el in a romantic way at all until lucas told him that he should “just marry her already.” (ep2 or 3, i forgot). it was reallyyy early on. there was nothing natural compared to the others. mike felt he had to just because she is a girl and his friends said so.
i mean look at the face he makes right before he even kisses her the first time (after comparing her to family):
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
el sees mike as her caretaker in s1. mike is the first to provide any real care and shelter. but, she’s traumatized. she clings and follows on to the first person to show her real care. i don’t even think she saw him in a romantic way either until he kissed her. because she sees him as a caretaker, she follows through with it like she has to. now i do think there was some sort of eventual romantic feelings for mike on el’s side later in the series, but it’s not a healthy type. it’s a very skewed perspective due to trauma.
Tumblr media
the only other relationship that does follow the same formula is mike and will.
they are endgame.
I’m gonna say this might be controversial only because I’m blatantly comparing Mileven and Byler but I’m gonna say it now, this isn’t me comparing them in a Mileven vs. Byler way. It’s just what I’ve always inferred about the differences between them based on what’s shown. I’m also someone who only watched ST for the first time last year so I never had any kind of attachment to Mileven which I think makes it easier to notice things imo
I feel like the biggest difference between Mileven and Byler is that Mileven gives teenagers that like each other and Byler gives teenagers in love. I do personally think Mike is probably gay (I say probably because realistically I think he’d just be unlabeled) but he clearly wants to like El because apart from him believing it’s what she also wants, it’s also just what he thinks is ‘normal’
I don’t think Mike and El being actually in love was ever something that we were meant to believe in the first place because the writers have never done anything to show that they are. They’re a typical teenage couple, they’re typically shallow and they’re forcing themselves to bring up ‘love’ because it’s apart of dating. The two have never actually had any heart to heart moments ever since they got together. Every moment they’ve had alone together since S2 haven’t really been meaningful or romantic at all when you break them down; The scenes of them making out, El saying she makes her own rules after Mike said he doesn’t like her spying, Mileven reading the M&M ingredients for reconciliation, El deciding they’re together again, Mileven fighting about love and then the SBP conversation that actually didn’t have a clear topic and was eventually interrupted by Argyle
In comparison, Byler has the love already without even being together. They’ve already passed all the stages at this point, developing their feelings slowly over time but they just never went through this together. They both have had the time to work out their feelings and what they want on their own
I still remember when Caleb said Lucas and Max’s love is real unlike Mike and El’s, that was honestly iconic but also very true. Mike and El clearly love each other but I just don’t think their whole romantic relationship deal was ever supposed to be perceived as ‘deep’ I would say. They’re not each other’s person and they know that. I don’t think El is gonna be finding her person anytime soon for the sole reason that romantic love isn’t even what she wants, nor is it something she was ever ready for. She wants to be loved and she is. She wants to be her own person and she is
And Mike wants to be needed by someone and loved for who he is, despite his insecurities. He wants to feel equal to this person and this person is Will
