Fic Playlist Liner Notes: The Madness of Emperor Tarkin
Whee! This is the last in the fic playlist series (at least until I, uh, write another longfic worthy of a playlist). I’m actually quite fond of this one - I think it’s pretty musically and thematically cohesive, and not much longer than it needs to be.
The fic: The Madness of Emperor Tarkin
Listen along: [Spotify | YouTube]
Zolita - Drag Me to Hell
I'm under your spell If you drag me to hell I'll still want ya
Hello! Welcome to the playlist that's like 80% just a pile of self-destructive horniness. Because that is the vibe of this fic, okay. Here's Tarkin committing himself to the desire he still feels for Anakin, even though Anakin is - as he sees it - no longer on the Empire's side, and is likely about to destroy them both. (For bonus points, the song starts out with a line about a mask...)
Miley Cyrus (feat. Dua Lipa) - Prisoner
Strung out on a feeling, my hands are tied Your face on my ceiling, I fantasize Oh, I can't control it, I can't control it
Similar to the above! Tarkin can't seem to get his fever-pitch, bad-for-him feelings back down to a reasonable level, and he's not very happy about it.
Katie Garfield - Crash & Burn
Take me down to the river Tie me up with strings Head under the water I'll tell you everything
I mean, there's an interrogation scene in this fic, but this is also just a continuation/escalation of Tarkin's fantasies about Anakin destroying him. Deep down both of them know, as the title implies, that this is their relationship breaking apart.
Delain - Creatures
Our final melody is slowly Dying with the light But you are the night You are the night
Tarkin's view of Anakin, more generally.
Kerli - Savages
But we'll be making love like savages I'll lick the poison from right off your kiss
Annnnd we're back to the self-destructive horny songs. (I think this particular song is really hot, by the way. I like that it's the precise center of the playlist.)
Digital Daggers - Close Your Eyes
Say you'll keep still, as still as can be Don't get caught in the chaos surrounding us Trust that we're coming out clean
Anakin, trying very hard to convince Tarkin to calm the fuck down and just trust him. Unfortunately, Anakin's own actions are not, in fact, very trustworthy right now. It's a clusterfuck.
Phantogram - Black Out Days
Speak in tongues I don't even recognize your face
This song was recommended by @carrionspiked and it totally fits, Tarkin is looking at Anakin and seeing something wholly different both from Anakin's actual reality and from what Anakin wishes he would see. It gets even more appropriate as Tarkin's condition worsens in the later chapters.
So Below - Toll
If I should wake this time I know There is nothing left to hold Lying here beneath this dark There is nothing left to love
Tarkin's catatonia. He's just done. His brain is done. Even if he wakes up, the relationship is pretty much done.
Miley Cyrus - Never Be Me
I know I do this every time I walk the line, I play with fire
A song about knowing you're wrong for your partner and loving them anyway. I picked this song to go last on the playlist before I had figured out how this story was going to end. Which is why there's a bit of divergence between the song and the story - Miley ends by singing defiantly that she's not going to leave, but Tarkin does end up leaving Vader. I kept the song because on some level it still felt right. Even before I figured out the ending, something struck me not only about the emotions in the song but about the way the phrase "I play with fire" is used as a refrain - there's something very full circle about it, when this relationship began in a series called "Playing With Fire." It felt like a conclusion. If you'll forgive a bit of magical thinking, it felt like my playlist knew this was the end of the story, even before I did. They did play with fire, and this is how it went, and this is where it ended. Anything beyond it would be superfluous.

match ateez members with your favourite songs :'D
LMAO VIVI, icb it took me this long to answer this
Seonghwa - Niki’s I Like U. Though the song’s on the POV of the one who “lost”, Niki’s talking about the person who slipped away. Not gonna lie, this gives me Seonghwa vibes.
“I know that I signed up for this casually But I fell for your tricks, I'm the casualty“ “But I just can't seem to figure you out You got that mystery“
Look me in the eye and tell me you didn’t think Seonghwa would carry that much charm.
“Something about you makes me difficult But that makes us even 'cause you're top of the charts Egotistical, it's so typical For me to fall for your kind But, oh God, I wish you were mine“
HELLO?!?!
“I like you, I like you, I like you Sorry, I never meant to (Sorry)“ “I'll be patient, I swear I'll even count to ten One, two, three, four, five F- it“
Just gives me the entire vibe of how Seonghwa has this charm that you never really thought of going for but here we are. Fools for Seonghwa. Also, Aries energy the whole ‘One, two, three, four, five, fuck it.”
Second: Ooh La la - Tinashe
Hongjoong - Right off the bat, it’s Masego’s Tadow, the entire way they did the song just gave me the impression, that once they have the means to have all of that in a studio, Hongjoong will probably do it too. Also, the lyrics.
“Baby like oh How'd you do the thing? The way that you do it and she ain't even show Nothing She be walking 'round so confident, so heaven-sent I think she was meant to knock 'em dead like (tadow) (tadow)“
Give Hongjoong some time and he’ll probably come out with subtle chill bangers like this.
Second: Hey Baby - Crush, Zion T
Yunho - Tone Stith’s Let Me. Him being so willing to lend his credit card to Mingi in that one V-live. The way this fandom just agrees that he’s the type of person who’s love language is to pamper them. BUT ALSO. Yunho’s very relaxed, the relaxed that has him just leaning against the couch type. (is it the Scorpio mars? I have no clue.) BUT this song. THIS SONG. YUNHO.
Second: Coco Bottle - Penomeco
Yeosang - Eric Bellinger’s Type A Way. When Jongho said that Yeosang’s song recommendation was The Weeknd’s Heartless, it made me look at him at a slightly different light. He’s underestimated I think. So have a song that warns you that if you underestimate someone you’re bound to get whiplash.... which is what Yeosang gives me. His confidence in himself also is growing so it’s only a matter of time until he probably shows something deadlier than what he’s been showing us.  (cough cough @yeochikin thoughts?)
“So careful what you wish for (you might get it) You might get it (just wanna show you)“
“When I give it to you night and day (woo, yeah) And day, day and night, I know what to do (and day) Bet I make you feel some type of way-ay, of way-ay, of way-ay“
Second: Nights Like This - Kehlani
San - Ty Dolla Sign’s Purple Emoji. The song’s pretty much on how they express their love and appreciation for the other person. Their Day 1′s. The people who helped them become better. Different types of love. All just wanting the better for the other. San’s been the Day 1 for ATEEZ, wanting the best, wanting to improve for them. Besides the fact it’s called Purple emoji (San: Purple uwu), it’s just something I can associate San with.
“I had to boss you up, I had to level up myself I did some growin' up, I'm doin' better for myself But I still need you“
“When we turn like 50, I'm still gonna have all of your messages saved Purple emojis with horns on it Like the devil, but ain't nothin' devilish, babe In fact, it's a Heaven-sent thing“
Also, this song has a special place in my heart. I kind of wanted to make sure if I associate someone with this song, it was going to be someone who has a good heart.
Second: Pineapple Skies - Miguel
Mingi - Sik-K feat DPR Live’s Have A Little Fun. Did I spend time looking up the brands Mingi wears in Mingkiway and out of that vlog? Yes. They’re not cheap. It’s not brands either that are as known as Gucci but mention them to someone who knows fashion and there’s a chance that they know it. Rich boy vibes. Also, Live’s verse on world tours = Mingi’s wish for ATEEZ World Domination.
“YSL a bunch of money Diamond bling Switching lanes Porsche yeah believe that World tour that you wait on Rap till I die so my coffin gold Rep the country Yeah you might know Gon be legend that’s how it go”
Second: Lost in Your Light - Dua Lipa
Wooyoung - Penomeco’s Coco Bottle. There’s something about this song that really gives me Wooyoung vibes. The whole: I want to get away from this place, somewhere different. with someone. I don’t have the lyrics here cause it’s really just a lot of comparisons to coco bottles, and being brought to his own world (whatever that means). I do see Wooyoung just freestyling to this song though :c
Second: Ring Ring Ring - Somdef
Jongho - It’s a tie between Ella Mai’s Boo’d up and Trip. LMAO, I really did not have any plans of looking at him. Not in the “I want to ignore this guy” but more of “I don’t want to fall for his charms” My friends have seen my turmoil of trying to stay strong and not fall for him up to how I now just Yell over Jongho’s existence and mannerisms. Also, I’m really not used to having someone younger than me as my bias wrecker????? Bro What.
“My bad, my bad for, trippin' on you“
“Hear my heart go ba-do, boo'd up Biddy-da-do, it just won't stop, it go“

A get-to-know-me. Thanks @trinareadsbooks, for the tag!
Tumblr media
Nickname? Leebear. The soccer team needed to come up with a nickname to differentiate me from another player with the last name “Lee.” Somehow they came up with “Leebear,” which didn’t really help the issue, but still stuck, the way nicknames tend to do.
Starsign? Aries, Aquarius moon, Scorpio rising
Height? 5′3″
Last film I saw: Last film I saw in theaters was The Hate U Give. I saw it with a full theater and cried a lot.
Favourite musician? Right now, I’d have Janelle Monáe, Dua Lipa, Carly Rae Jepsen, Noname, H.E.R., and Lianne La Havas on my main list.
Song stuck in my head: I’ve had this super weird song, “Ghost Story” by Charming Disaster, about a couple that reconnects after the husband’s death, stuck in my head. It’s the Weather of Welcome to Night Vale episode 50 (I’m super behind but listening to podcasts again to and from work in the cold weather).
Do I get asks? Not nearly enough! I love when people ask me questions and would love people to do it more!
What am I wearing? Leggings with hidden pockets (woot), black t-shirt, librarian-esque grey cardigan, silver big earrings, a turquoise and silver ring, black flats. Very on brand.
Dream job? Novelist and book reviewer—I’m on my way. I guess since that’s a “realistic” dream I’m actively striving for, I’ll say my dream job would be spending six months of the year traveling the world and having someone pay me for it, and the other six months writing novels.
Dream trip? My dream trip is in the works—Barcelona, Madrid, and the south of Spain—so I’ll look ahead instead to my perhaps-impossible dream trip, which is visiting Russia, then taking the TransSiberian through Mongolia and under the Great Wall to Beijing.
Describe yourself as aesthetic things (taken from another tag—I loved the question): Thunder drumming outside with rain pounding on the window; magnolia trees; the sound of waves hitting the beach; the feeling of cool grass beneath your toes; red lipstick; gold jewelry; warm scarves and flowing dresses; the crinkly sound that paper makes when it’s been filled with writing with ballpoint pen.
Play any instruments? I don’t, and not for lack of trying. If in chorus someone played a starting note, I could use the distance between notes to understand what leaps my voice had to make. Instruments were harder though—I had to make the connection from the notes to their relationships and then to my hands, which was less intuitive. In 8th, my teacher tried to get me to play baritone, which was disastrous, as I could only just manageably play the flute, and as it separated me from my friends. When I told him I wanted to switch back, he disagreed, and I was already going to be doing too much in high school, so I quit to focus on the things I actually loved and was good at, chorus and soccer.
Languages? Only English right now. I don’t have much of a talent for language, although I wish I did, or that I had more time to dedicate to it. But I am quite proficient reading in Spanish, and know enough speaking to get by in a Spanish-speaking country. I’ve also dabbled in German and Hindi, but only retained a little of either.
Favorite food: Fresh sweet peas, anything peppermint chocolate, spinach goat cheese pizza, good szechuan string beans, chicken with mole, garlic shrimp.
Favorite songs? A lot of my favorites are ones that bring me joy, cheer me up on bad days. “Gimmie Love” and “Cut to the Feeling” by Carly Rae Jepsen are up there. I have a new favorite Janelle Monáe song every week, but it’s usually “Make Me Feel.” Lianne La Havas’s “What You Don’t Do” and “Green and Gold,” “LSD” by Jamila Woods feat. Chance the Rapper, “Whipped Cream” by Ari Lennox, and “Balam Pichkari” from Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani are also current contenders.
Random Fact: I’m a season ticket holder for the Chicago Red Stars, my local women’s soccer team, and was at the 2015 Women’s World Cup final in Vancouver, where Carli Lloyd scored a hat trick and the US won against Japan 5–2.

Ten Songs Tag
Tagged by my fellow muso, @lady-redshield-writes! Thank you so much for the tag, my friend! I am always up for discussing music. Plus, your answers were super insightful, and I found some new music to jam out to!
Any of my fellow musicians, instrumentalists, vocalists, or appreciator of the arts are hereby tagged, if they find themselves so inclined to participate!
RULES: Post ten songs you are currently obsessed with and explain what caused or created this obsession!
1. “New Rules” - Dua Lipa I’ve been obsessed with this song since I first heard it on my family vacation to Walt Disney World this past December and I still listen to it consistently. Dua Lipa’s voice could only be called angelic, with a falsetto rivaling that of Allen Stone - and from a female, such a feat is almost unheard of. It’s rare to find a song on the radio that actually rejects sleeping around with the wrong person and instead solidifying healthier habits, denying toxic lifestyles and emphasizing the importance of oneself instead. Way to go, Dua Lipa!
2. “In Shallow Seas We Sail” - Emery Emery holds a special place in my heart as a band that can encapsulate the angst plaguing young adults. Most artists resonate with middle/high schoolers, but Emery speaks to me more now as an adult than they would have when I was younger. Plus, that voice? Gorgeous. This specific song has so many layers to get lost within. To me, it truly portrays that feeling of drowning in the midst of waves.
3. “Isn’t He (This Jesus)” - Natalie Grant This song really grew on me. I’ve always loved Natalie Grant, but this didn’t click with me at first. My mom sent me a link to this, overly excited to see that she had released new music after the surgery on her throat. Thankfully, she didn’t pull a Julie Andrews and came out all the stronger because of it. At first, I thought the song was decent, but it never hit home with me. Even still, I kept putting it on repeat while I wrote and I soon found myself worshipping in the midst of writing sessions instead. There’s something so...pure about this song. It’s raw, it’s honest, it’s simple. It doesn’t feel the need to be flashy, which I admire.
4. “Skyfall” - Our Last Night (OPB. Adele) I thought I liked Skyfall when it first came out - and then I heard this rendition. HOO BOY, was I in for a surprise! One of my friends, who apparently knows OLN, has been telling me to listen to them forever now and I never did. I turned this on while out on a walk and jammed to their music the rest of the night home. If you like pop-punk covers of already-phenomenal music, you might need to give this a listen...and then to their “Shape of You” cover, too.
5. “Party Tattoos” - Dodie This song goes against everything I normally listen to and I still am unsure why I like it so much. My friend included it in their character playlist and I just kept it on loop for days. It’s this wonderfully peppy, easygoing song with a slightly morbid undertone to its meaning. Maybe the mystery intrigues me so much? If you’re into indie music, give it a listen.
6. “Let the Flames Begin (Live)” - Paramore Paramore formed one part of my musical holy trinity throughout my childhood (along with Fall Out Boy and Panic at the Disco), and even though I no longer connect to their newer music, they still hold a special place in my heart. I’m not normally a fan of live performances, beyond worship songs, but this specific song adds SO much more live than it does in the studio. Williams adds an extended outtro, starting with an epic instrumental solo, and then ending with a bang. That bang? A special song snippet named “Oh Father”. I belt it out every time without question or hesitation. This may or may not be a Kingdom Come character’s theme...for a future book.
7. “Nighttime Hunger” - Overcoats Believe it or not, @khymnal showed me this song and I cannot get it out of my head. The Overcoats have the most seamless, unified harmonies I may have ever heard. They blend together so effortlessly. Their voices are almost like sirens...the mermaid kind, not the police kind. I think a lot of people can relate to temptation lurking in the longer night comes, and this makes it both eerie and gorgeous instead of disturbing. And let’s be honest - isn’t temptation as enticing as it is unsettling? They captured the feeling perfectly.
8. “Birth of a Wish (Become as Gods)” - NieR: Automata I needed to include an instrumental game song on this list, and what better than what I play on repeat whenever I write a battle sequence for Kingdom Come? This idea that men want to become deities ties in perfectly with the themes of KC, and especially its central characters. The epicness of this music, and the way it makes me want to wield a sword and slay a dragon and save a princess in space all at once, only enhances its amazingness.
9. “Never Enough” - The Greatest Showman If you haven’t seen this movie yet, I don’t know what you’re doing with your life. I cannot tell you how emotional I got as soon as this song came on the first time. I still listen to it all of the time, and am dying to hear my mom sing it (side-note: my mom is a ridiculously talented singer and she will never admit it). The power of the lyrics matches the power in her voice and it combines to form the most dynamic musical number I’ve ever heard in a theatrical film - and the best part? They didn’t even need choreography to enhance it.
10. “Where’s My Love (Alternate Version)” - SYML Did anyone else fall in love with this song during the Figure Skating portion of the Winter Olympics? As soon as I heard this, I downloaded the song. It’s this haunting melody accompanied by a gorgeous piano player and it just works. Listen to it if you feel like you want to cry about a lost lover you probably never actually knew.
Bonus: “Hang It Up (Abacus & Vargas ‘Predator’ Remix)” - The Ting Tings So, I only heard this after I’d already written up this post...but it’s the best. I freaking love this style, the likes of which I have only heard rivaled by the Shiny Toy Guns. My best friend and I listen to it every week while we prepare for our Monster of the Week podcast recording session and it fires us up every time.

My Songs of the Summer 2018
At last we have reached the first official day of summer and you know what that means… time for my picks for 2018’s songs of the summer.  Some of these you may have already heard but, it is worth mentioning them since they have not yet been featured on the blog and as an added bonus I will be providing some honorable mentions for songs at the end for those of you who are willing to read this post in its entirety.  So let’s get it started with top 5 favorite songs that I will be listening to all summer long.  Enjoy!
youtube
Zedd - The Middle feat. Maren Morris, Grey
Already on continuous radio airplay, this single has been everywhere so far on the charts since being released back in January and so far has peaked at number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100.  When you can get a song featured in a target commercial, I think it’s safe to say that you have a hit on your hands.  It’s the perfect combination of pop and electronic music and the chorus is so infectious with the vocals from Morris.  Altogether, it is a perfect pop song that will for sure be blasted at clubs and cook outs this summer.
youtube
Drake - Nice for What
Although it seemed like the summer was about to get heated up real fast with Drake’s beef with Pusha T, it seems that for now things have since cooled.  You may have given up on Drizzy since taking the L from Pusha, but I believe he has reached the status like Kanye, in that no matter what you think of the person on a personal level, you are still going to take time to give his music a listen.  For a second there I thought “God’s Plan” was going to be the single from Drake for this summer, but this Lauryn Hill sample and more appealing dance beat is sure to get everyone and especially the women out on the floor with its female empowerment message.
youtube
Cardi B - I like it feat. Bad Bunny, and J Balvin
Just as Dj Khaled did last summer using a Carlos Santana sample to create a hit, Cardi digs into the crate to pull a sample from singer Pete Rodriguez’s  hit single “I like it like that” to produce a seductive trap salsa sound to get you out on the dance floor.  The subject matter is nothing new from Cardi as she describes material items that she likes while stunning on haters who wish they could live her lifestyle. In either case though, the song is perfect for this time of year to get people out and dancing to the boogaloo rhythm.
youtube
Kacey Musgraves - High Horse
I don’t know who thought combing country with pop and disco was a good idea, but kudos to the production team behind this single from Kacey Musgraves.  “High Horse” is a song about a woman telling someone off and putting them in their place.  The song just has this contagious appeal to it and is sung very well by Musgraves. The album that this single is featured on (Golden Hour) is also generating a lot of attention and praise from critics as one of the best so far this year. So do not be shocked come Grammy nomination time seeing Musgraves name for numerous categories later this year.
youtube
John Legend - A Good Night feat. BloodPop
As is with this time of year, it also means wedding season is in full swing.  John was smart releasing this dance single at this time to tap into that vibe.  This song is about potentially meeting your soulmate and falling for that special someone. By far I think this was a very well done music video and uses the modern day swipe app culture in a fun way when it comes to modern dating.  Nothing has been stated if there is an accompanying album from Legend for this year, so for now this single about falling in love will have to do.  Which I’m sure will not be an issue, as I’m positive this song will be on heavy rotation for many weddings planned for this year.
HONORABLE MENTIONS
Calvin Harris – One Kiss feat. Dua Lipa
Clean Bandit – Solo feat. Demi Lovato
Sean Paul – Mad Love feat. David Guetta, and Becky G
Rudimental – These Days feat. Jess Glynne, Macklemore, and Dan Caplen

REVIEWING THE CHARTS: 17/10/2020 (Headie One, D-Block Europe)
You know, I kind of expected a bigger impact from D-Block Europe given that this is their debut studio album. I guess maybe people are as sick of these guys as I am; the mixtapes they released got tracks higher on the chart than this, and that was without some of the big name features they had. Regardless, we still have nine songs to cover here, so... this week’s #1 is still “Mood” by 24kGoldn and iann dior, and welcome back to REVIEWING THE CHARTS.
Tumblr media
Dropouts & Returning Entries
Last week had two album bombs – or at least whatever you can call “album bombs” on a chart that tries its hardest to stop those from happening – so naturally there are quite a few drop-outs and returning entries from the UK Top 75. Two of each from 21 Savage with Metro Boomin and Bryson Tiller are gone from last week, with the only songs from both albums still on the chart being the ones with a “(feat. Drake)” in the title. Typical. None of the BLACKPINK songs from last week have stayed either. Other than those six, we also have a handful of notable drop-outs like “What’s Love Got to Do with It” by Kygo and Tina Turner, “Hallucinate” by Dua Lipa and “POPSTAR” by DJ Khaled and Drake, which probably just felt the impact of dumb UK chart rules about streaming. All of these are pretty decent songs – the first two could have peaked a lot higher – so what in the returning entries is coming to replace them? Well, we have “Wishing Well” by the late Juice WRLD back at #74 and a theme of long-running hip-hop tracks like “Dinner Guest” by AJ Tracey and MoStack back at #72 and “I Dunno” by Dutchavelli featuring Tion Wayne and Stormzy at #68, all of which peaked in the top 20. The biggest gain this week was for Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams” which is in the top 40 this week and predicted to be even higher in the weeks to come, especially in the US. We usually send 40-year-old songs to #1 but the States seem to have caught up with that too. The biggest fall this week was for the debut last week, “Outta Time” by Bryson Tiller featuring Drake, plummeting from #24 to #58, which is understandable; I mean the only reason it got that high in the first place was because of Drake. Now, onto the new arrivals.
NEW ARRIVALS
#63 – “BLM” – OFB (Bandokay and Double Lz) featuring Abra Cadabra
Produced by N2theA
Like many people, fans and artists alike, due to the recent events in America and across the world, I’ve gained a renewed interest in protest music, particularly songs about systematic racism and police brutality. Many artists, including some of the biggest out right now like Lil Baby, have made songs about this recently but really this is not an isolated incident or chain of events. Rappers, musicians and activists have discussed these issues for years and the fact that the general public is finally latching onto some of it makes me hopeful. Seriously though, if you’re looking for a great song from a couple years back protesting against the same topic, “Don’t Don’t Do It!” by N.E.R.D. featuring Kendrick Lamar is right there. OFB is a drill collective from Tottenham, and the group actually contains some genuinely massive names, like Headie One and RV, but here, we just have Bandokay and Double Lz, as well as affiliate Abra Cadabra on the chorus. There’s also a sample of Coldplay here, which actually works as a melancholy piano component of this drill beat, even if it feels like a bizarre choice at first glance. I don’t really need to talk to you about the beat, right? In a song like this, content is what matters and, yeah, it makes a pretty solid case for itself sticking up to inhumane police officers, even if some of the lyrics do feel oddly surface level at times, particularly Abra Cadabra and Double Lz, even though he does have personal anecdotes to tell, but not as much as Bandokay on the first verse where he does get pretty damn in-depth.
There’s no evidence on S but 21 years got slapped to his chest / Yo, I just want P like Diddy, police on my back ‘cah I look like Pops
Bandokay is the son of the late Mark Duggan, a 29-year-old Black man who was unlawfully shot and killed by police in Tottenham in 2011, sparking protests and riots across Britain. This feels particularly profound but also unnerving from Bandokay because he sees himself as next in line for this treatment, talking about how it still haunts him and when he finds out about a friend of his getting life in prison, he’s stressed because he feels like it could very well be him locked up in there for reasons equally unjustified or clearly at the fault of minority disenfranchisement, particularly for young Black men who are driven to the streets because of it. Both Bandokay and Abra Cadabra discuss how gang culture is seen as an excuse for police officers to shoot, with the chorus digging into how because of the violence depicted in Black art due to segregation and societal issues still present in the modern world, that gives them the justification for assault and murder of innocent Black lives. Double Lz goes a bit off-topic here but I can’t say that recall of a phone conversation he had with his friend in jail doesn’t hit hard given the context, especially in a time where we feel more distant than ever with fellow humans. I don’t think it’s as good as “The Bigger Picture” but these guys definitely get my respect for this. Check it out.
#55 – “Proud” – D-Block Europe
Produced by Mind the Gap
And now for almost the exact opposite of social commentary, serious topics and melancholy production: D-Block Europe, although this isn’t actually D-Block Europe, it’s half of the band. Young Adz has three solo songs on this stupidly long album and Dirtbike LB has two, one of which has a feature so I’m pretty sure we all know who’s the Swae Lee in this British Rae Sremmurd... especially since Young Adz’s solo song debuted this high. The song is actually quite different from their standard fare at least in terms of lyrical content, with Adz going into the gang culture and its effect on his mental health, particularly his relationship and drug addiction. His off-beat nasal crooning here is actually kind of charming under these levels of Auto-Tune and a fast-paced trap beat that actually works a lot once it kicks in a minute and a half in. The second verse, particularly, is pretty excellent, where he dedicates the verse to his daughter, who he hopes will not follow in his footsteps of “lifestyles” but also promises her wealth and a continued faith in Islam. The way he talks about how he wants his daughter to succeed even if he dies and later on his companionship with Dirtbike LB is... kind of beautiful, honestly, and does make me look past the mixing issues and... interesting delivery from Young Adz. The uncredited whispery vocals from RAYE on the outro definitely add to the feel of the track and, yeah, I like this quite a lot more than I expected but it still doesn’t make me want to check out that album.
#53 – “I Miss U” – Jax Jones and Au/Ra
Produced by Jax Jones, Mark Ralph, Cass Lowe, Alex Tepper and Tom Demac
Hey, remember Au/Ra? Well, I didn’t either until I checked her Spotify page and saw she was behind that “Panic Room” song that I loved from last year, specifically the remix from CamelPhat – seriously, I’d like to see more on the charts from those guys too. I’m not sure Jax Jones will be able to live up to the brilliantly-constructed ominous future house of that song, but this is supposed to be a silly love or break-up song so I expect a cute, vaguely tropical radio-friendly dance-pop tune with some 90s deep house influence thrown in there, like most of Jax’s stuff ends up being. Anyone else kind of sick of this stuff? I know it gets plays in the clubs which are still in the UK and much of Europe, using this type of dance music, but this robotic draining of the emotion from generic break-up tunes sang by indie-adjacent women over a four-on-the-floor beat is something I’ve heard hundreds of times before. I know this has been a British staple for decades but the new-ish style of vocal drops and generally tired production is growing pretty stale for me at least. It can work when it does, and Au/Ra isn’t a bad fit for this slick, beeping production – this is a pretty okay song all things considered – but there’s not any warmth or quality in this type of stuff anymore, let alone variation. This song is fine but I do hope it kind of underperforms for Jax just to set a precedent that this is exhausting and honestly kind of a cheap ploy for plays at this point. Is that too harsh? Probably, but after two and a half years of seeing these types of songs every other week, it gets on your nerves.
#49 – “Not a Pop Song” – Little Mix
Produced by Robin Oliver Fred, Tayla Parx and MNEK, peaked at #37 in Ireland
Does that mean I don’t have to review it? I want to like this girl group, especially after they ditched the manufactured pop image from Syco and signed to another label that I assume does not treat him as horrifically, but I feel like the music hasn’t changed or gotten any more interesting at all. In fact, this song serves as kind of a diss track to Simon Cowell, and not in any way a subtle one at that. “I don’t do what Simon says”? I mean, don’t you guys also have a talent show you executive-produced, and is airing currently on the BBC? Sigh, well, is the song any good? Well, it tries a little bit more with that guitar loop but not with the clunky trap beat, the harmonised triplet flows in the pre-chorus that sound awkward, and most importantly, the lyrics, which are otherwise fine in how they represent the music industry, a corrupt and unfriendly business, but not in a way that feels like it’s revealing any secrets or anything that really hits. Especially the chorus, where that “I don’t give a what” chant just undermines the whole message. Shouldn’t the point be that now you CAN swear on your songs? I don’t know, this is just worthless but admittedly a lot more listenable than their last record so I’ll give it to them there, even if it is out of a clear effort to be as inoffensive as possible.
#46 – “Flowers” – Chip
Produced by Dready
So, in Chip’s pretty garbage verse on “Waze” earlier this year, he took some shots at an underground artist that many assumed were shots at Stormzy, who commented on this with some subliminals on “I Dunno”. Naturally, in response to this light-hearted beef from two former good friends all based on misinterpretation, Stormzy pulled up to the guy’s house, with only Chip’s brother and sister being home. His sister even felt the need to pull out a kitchen knife to defend herself, so, yeah, I have no sympathy for Stormzy here. Unless this is based on personal drama that we don’t know of, he really unnecessarily escalated this petty dispute. Hence, Chip has two diss tracks here, this is the first of them; the other didn’t chart. To quote Chip’s manager, Ashley Rae, who is also name-dropped in the song: Stormzy pulled up unannounced to Chip’s building with three other people. The building was secure with gates and an intercom system. He didn’t knock. He came in and was posted in the car park screaming for Chip to come outside. After being told to leave twice as Chip wasn’t home, he refused and made his way to Chip’s apartment on the top floor where family were inside and it got heated. He caused a commotion so the neighbours called the police. This diss track seems to share my view of the situation; Chip even briefly brings up the political climate as he talks about how Stormzy should have expected the police to be called – after all, when people in Essex see black men shouting outside a building, regardless of their innocence, the authorities seem to get involved. In this diss track, Chip calls back to other disses he’s made, notes his disappointment in Stormzy collaborating with Ed Sheeran when he’s the one who escalated to potential violence – you’d think he’d be smarter not to risk his image – and sending some personal shots at his break-up with Maya Jama, which actually made me chuckle, particularly when he says that a throwaway track on a collaborative album seems to have incited a bigger reaction than that long-term relationship coming to an end. He goes even deeper into how he thinks Stormzy’s activism is hypocritical if he wants to incite black-on-black violence by pulling up to Chip’s house, and references the late 2Pac and Pop Smoke and... okay, he just ravages Stormzy here, and it helps that this beat is menacing, even if I don’t like Chip’s delivery or voice, as I never have. “Killer MC”, the other diss track, is a lot vaguer and with a pretty chaotic beat which Chip can barely flow on, so yeah, I’m glad this one charted. Man, a lot of aggressive, lyrically-focused songs today, huh?
#34 – “Destiny” – D-Block Europe
Produced by Jony Beats
And just like that, they appear. This is our second and last song from that D-Block Europe album debuting this week, and it’s only high because of a video anyway – that and the fact it’s the first on the album. Otherwise, this is typical D-Block Europe fare, albeit this time with a hilarious but absolutely pointless 30-second acoustic guitar intro that just consists of the guys whispering “Destined” with as much reverb as possible. Dirtbike LB is actually on the hook this time, making it even more lethargic. Young Adz is filling in empty space with ad-libs again, including his signature “SKI!”, and in his first verse here, I genuinely laughed out loud after that booming “bow-bow-bow-bow” vocal interlude coming out of nowhere. It honestly caught me off-guard. I kinda like Young Adz’s pretty energetic flow here though, and he definitely plays with the boring trap beat in a way that is pretty funny. He feels the need to say “Happy G-day” to a person in the booth with him, which shows that he’s freestyling at least some of this stuff, which is kind of impressive. He “endorses” new straps, which is just funny wording to me, as is when he says 9 Goddy “had” Norwich, like he just owned the city – although, as a fellow East Midlander, I kind of appreciate the shout out. My favourite part in the verse is probably his attempt at 2012 hashtag-rap, where he says “half a mil’, mortgage”, but the beat cuts out when he mutters a wimpy “rurr” ad-lib, and that almost forgives his weedy delivery and gross Auto-Tune. I think “Rurr, mortgage” makes up for the chorus, “Break a brick like Tetris”. Honestly, I get why people prefer Adz’s energy and funny content because the only thing to laugh at with Dirtbike LB’s bleak, almost depressing lyrics about materialism, meaningless sex and drug addiction, is how he phrases everything in a manner that is uniquely middle-class and polite, especially in this verse, and how he just seems to be accepting the dark topics he talks about in his verse with a shrug of his shoulders. It’s kind of concerning, I mean, I don’t like the music but I hope he’s okay. In conclusion, the song’s fine and honestly I kind of love the first verse but that chorus is dull and really it’s a pretty poorly-mixed trap cut. To be honest, if there’s more of this energy from Adz on the album, I might just check it out. The guy’s growing on me recently.
#29 – “Cool with Me” – Dutchavelli and M1llionz
Produced by The Fanatix
Apparently this guy is Stefflon Don’s brother, and now that she has been pretty quiet recently, I guess it’s time for Dutchavelli to step into the limelight, and he’s bringing fellow Birmingham rapper M1llions with him for a song with not much of a chorus to speak of. Instead, Dutchavelli and M1llionz trade verses and bars for three minutes over a pretty banging drill beat, with an eerie choral sample throughout and honestly pretty great verses from the two of them here. Dutchavelli sounds really aggressive here and I love the yelling in the ad-libs, even if it adds to some questionable vocal mixing throughout. M1llionz’s casual, meandering flow and cadence works really well in contrast, even if really nothing is said here other than gunplay and flexing. The beat feels like it never properly drops at all, and it just slides out abruptly by the end, but if this is an intro track to an upcoming album with a following track that drops us straight into it, I could see this working. As is, well, I’ve not got much to say about it but this is decent.
Also, I’d like to point out Dutch’s Wikipedia page, particularly the “in popular culture” section.
Dutchavelli has gained a reputation for being a hard man. This paired with his large stature has lead to a proliferation of memes relating to this within popular culture such as 'When Dutchavelli goes to a club, he asks the bouncer for ID'.
God, I love Wikipedia.
#24 – “Parlez-Vouz Anglais” – Headie One featuring Aitch
Produced by Al Hug and Ambezza
Okay, so our last two songs are both from Headie One and his overly long, 20+ track album he released last week, Edna. Do you see a trend with these British rap artists and debut albums? To be fair, I am more interested in this album, and I’ll probably listen to it after writing this. The feature list looks pretty good – I mean, it’s got Drake, Kenny Beats, Skepta and ironically, Young Adz on a song that did NOT chart this week – and I really loved “Both” from last year, so it’s probably worth checking out at least some of the songs. This song, however, was not one of those I was interested in. Man, I’m so angry I come back to this show and get back-to-back weeks with high debuts from rappers featuring this pioneer of gentrified drill music. He’s already made a song romanticising French women and high fashion as well, so it’s not like this is new territory for the guy. Admittedly, I do enjoy this cute, lounge-y elevator music sample but it feels pretty drowned-out by both the bog-standard UK drill beat and awkward flows from both, who are doing a similar thing to Dutchavelli and M1llionz did in the last song we talked about, but with more repetition to fill up time and more trading bars between the two, as well as an actual chorus, which is about as dull as bricks. Both Aitch and Headie have uninteresting flows and use awkward ad-libs to disguise a clear lack of any attempts at good wordplay or content that goes any further than worryingly blatant misogyny from Aitch and constant flexing. It’s not interesting, and it’s not good either.
#11 – “Princess Cuts” – Headie One featuring Young T & Bugsey
Produced by iO and TobyShyBoy
I’m not surprised this was the track that debuted this high. Thanks to TikTok picking up “Don’t Rush”, which is a brilliant song by the way, this group isn’t just big in the UK like most of these rappers, they are genuinely global superstars for the British hip hop scene and I love that. They made Aitch’s debut onto the charts both listenable and promising on “Strike a Pose” (It’s really a feat) and are constantly bringing smooth flows and Bugsey’s really nice voice over good production. They are more than deserving of being how British hip hop is viewed worldwide, even as they got onto the Hot 100 with Headie One earlier this year. I was surprised too. So, yeah, I’m excited to hear this new collaboration between the two artists, and, surprise, surprise, it’s really good. I love the nostalgic early-mid-2000s R&B beat especially with that slick Latin guitar and pounding bass groove. I love Young T singing on the hook over really beautiful vocodered samples and funky keys in the instrumental. I love Headie’s pretty impressive and at times smooth flow in his two verses. I love how Young T & Bugsey share a sing-songy cadence in their verse. Man, I love everything about this song sonically, and content-wise, the lyrics don’t really leave that much to be desired either. Sure, it’s pretty much just towing the line between a hook-up jam and flexing, but there’s enough funny lines and convincing delivery to make this worth checking out. I also love how Headie starts the smooth, sexy hook-up jam with “My young boy got the stick like Moses with the Israelites” in his deep, gruff tone, which is just comedy gold. Headie also takes time to praise the Lord and show his limited knowledge of geography, which is either insensitive to Asians or satirical depending on how you look at it. Either way, it works and it’s funny. This is just an incredible song and I hope it sticks around. Check it out.
Conclusion
There’s actually not much here to complain about, even with D-Block Europe’s two songs here. Little Mix take the Dishonourable Mention for “Not a Pop Song” and Worst of the Week is going to Headie One for “Parlez-Vouz Anglais” featuring Aitch but I might as well balance that out by giving the guy Best of the Week for “Princess Cuts” with Young T & Bugsey. I don’t want Stormzy to pull up to my house next, so I’ll delay on giving Chip the Honourable Mention, but that is instead going to “BLM” by Bandokay, Double Lz and Abra Cadabra for simply being necessary, although I’m scared to admit Young Adz was pretty close here. I don’t know what’ll happen next week – hopefully not that new Kanye song – but here’s the top 10 for Friday’s chart:

Maybe I Don’t Want Heaven - An Of Bright Stars and Burning Hearts Playlist
A fic by @kazliin, you can find it HERE
Listen on Spotify
So, for the past few months I have fallen in the Rivals AU pit of misery and I don’t think i can or want to get out of there, so here’s a little something I wanted to do now that I’m reading Viktor’s side of the story (which let me tell yoou I think it’s equally or even more hearwrenching than Yuri’s). So I tried to convey what I think Viktor’s feeling through this playlist (emphasis on “I tried”).
Oh…and by the way, if you want to increase the pain to 1000% I suggest to read both parts of the fic simultaneously, I promise the hurt it’s totally worth it hahaha.
Now, I’m just going to rant a little about the songs lol
Strangers - Halsey feat. Lauren Jauregui
When I wake up all alone And I’m thinking of your skin I remember, I remember what you told me
Said that we’re not lovers, we’re just strangers With the same damn hunger To be touched, to be loved, to feel anything at all
Still Falling For You - Ellie Goulding
Beautiful mind Your heart got a story with mine Your heart got me hurting at times Your heart gave me new kind of highs Your heart got me feeling so fine So what to do Still falling for you
Need You Now - Lady Antebellum
It’s a quarter after one, I’m all alone and I need you now Said I wouldn’t call but I lost all control and I need you now And I don’t know how I can do without, I just need you now
Another shot of whiskey, can’t stop looking at the door Wishing you’d come sweepin’ in the way you did before And I wonder if I ever cross your mind For me it happens all the time
Something Great - One Direction
I want you here with me Like how I pictured it So I don’t have to keep imagining
Come on, jump out at me Come on, bring everything Is it too much to ask for something great?
Snake Eyes - Mumford & Sons
It’s in the eyes I can tell, you will always be danger We had it tonight, why do you leave it open?
Nicotine - Panic! at the Disco
Just one more hit and then we’re through ‘Cause you could never love me back Cut every tie I have to you ‘Cause your love’s a fucking drag But I need it so bad Your love’s a fucking drag But I need it so bad
Talk Me Down - Troye Sivan
I wanna hold hands with you But that’s all I wanna do right now And I wanna get close to you Cause your hands and lips still know their way around
Fire Meet Gasoline - Sia
It’s dangerous To fall in love, but I Wanna burn with you tonight Hurt me There’s two of us We’re bristling with desire The pleasure’s pain and fire Burn me
Distance - Christina Perri
I’ll give you everything I am, All my broken heartbeats. Until I know you’ll understand.
And I will make sure to keep my distance, Say I love you when you’re not listening, How long, can we keep this up, up, up?
All Of Me - John Legend
'Cause all of me Loves all of you Love your curves and all your edges All your perfect imperfections Give your all to me I’ll give my all to you You’re my end and my beginning Even when I lose I’m winning
Light - Sleeping at Last
’Сause you are loved. You are loved more than you know. I hereby pledge all of my days To prove it so. Though your heart is far too young to realize The unimaginable light you hold inside,
I’ll give you everything I have. I’ll teach you everything I know. I promise I’ll do better.
Heaven - Troye Sivan
The truth runs wild Like a tear down a cheek Trying to save face, and daddy heart break I’m lying through my teeth
This voice inside Has been eating at me Trying to replace the love that I fake With what we both need
Alone - Heart
But the secret is still my own and my love for you is still unknown Alone Till now I always got by on my own I never really cared until I met you And now it chills me to the bone How do I get you alone
With Me - Sum 41
Through it all, I made my mistakes I stumble and fall, but I mean these words
I want you to know: with everything, I won’t let this go These words are my heart and soul I’ll hold on to this moment, you know 'Cause I’d bleed my heart out to show that I won’t let go
Fix You - Glee Cast
And high up above or down below When you’re too in love to let it go But if you never try you’ll never know Just what you’re worth Lights will guide you home And ignite your bones And I will try to fix you
Fools - Troye SIvan
Only fools fall for you, only fools Only fools do what I do, only fools fall Oh, our lives don’t collide, I’m aware of this We’ve got differences and impulses and your obsession with
Best of Me - Sum 41
I’m sorry It’s all that I can say You mean so much, and I’d fix all that I’ve done If I could start again I’d throw it all away To the shadows of regrets, and you would have the best of me
All I Want - Kodaline
'Cause you brought out the best of me A part of me I’d never seen You took my soul wiped it clean Our love was made for movie screens
But If you loved me Why did you leave me Take my body Take my body All I want is All I need is To find somebody I’ll find somebody
Human - Christina Perri
I can fake a smile I can force a laugh I can dance and play the part If that’s what you ask Give you all I am I can do it I can do it I can do it But I’m only human And I bleed when I fall down I’m only human And I crash and I break down
Chasing Cars - Sleeping at Last
Those three words Are said too much They’re not enough
If I lay here If I just lay here Would you lie with me And just forget the world?
Stay the Night - Zedd feat. Hayley Williams
I know that we are upside down So hold your tongue and hear me out I know that we were made to break so what? I don’t mind
You kill the lights, I’ll draw the blinds Don’t dull the sparkle in your eyes I know that we were made to break so what? I don’t mind
Scared to be Lonely (Acoustic Version) - Martin Garrix feat. Dua Lipa
And I wonder why Wonder what for Why we keep coming back for more Is it just our bodies? Are we both losing our minds? Is the only reason you’re holding me tonight 'Cause we’re scared to be lonely? Do we need somebody Just to feel like we’re alright? Is the only reason you’re holding me tonight 'Cause we’re scared to be lonely?

Top 50 Singles of 2017
Hello and welcome to the third annual edition of my top singles list (2016, 2015)
I really like writing these lists and 2017 is all about doing more of the things you like and less of the things you don’t.
Hair Down by Mollie King would have been my top song of the year, except that ultimately it just wasn’t any good.
This year, because I’m feeling extra festive, I have made the list into an apple music playlist.
50
Allie X – Casanova
And we’re off. This chorus has one of the best hooks of the year.
49
Jax Jones - Breathe ft. Ina Wroldsen
Ina Wroldsen has one of my favourite voices in music. You can hear her singing backing on a lot of early songs by The Saturdays, given that she wrote most of them. First of two Jax Jones entries on the list.
48
Yaeji - Raingurl
Yaeji is cooler than me, you, anyone you have ever met, and anyone you will ever meet.
47
Lost Kings - Quit You ft. Tinashe
In which Tinashe controversially claims she is addicted to a Coldplay song.
46
Katy Perry - Bon Appétit ft. Migos
In 2013, Katy Perry was the biggest popstar on the planet, and I couldn’t understand why. In 2017, she releases a string of actual bops and her career is in nosedive. I’m ready to stan.
45
Josefine Myrberg - Head over Heels
Josefine Myrberg came third in Swedish Idol back in 2014. Nobody seems to be listening to her music much these days, but Head Over Heels (7.5k views at time of writing) is a genuinely beautiful song worthy of a lot more recognition.
44
Kehlani - Already Won
The first time I heard this I was like ‘yaaas’ all the way through. Kehlani’s autobiographical ode to her own successes is a reminder to all of us to recognise that sometimes, we have already won.
43
Sigrid Bernson - This Summer
A pop song by a Swedish woman about enjoying summer. There is nothing better.
42
Sage the Gemini - Now & Later
Released in 2016, but reached its chart peak in 2017 so it’s allowed. Now & Later was almost my most played song of Q1 so there’s that.
41
Gabrielle Aplin - Waking Up Slow
I’ve just discovered that a PIANO version of this song has 3x as many views on YouTube. That is criminal. This song is full of synths and it bops because of it.
40
Stockholm Noir - Hopeless Dreams
The “Take me to the south of France, I’ll feel poor again” bit is excellent.
39
Anitta - Paradinha
A very good friend of mine who happens to be multi-lingual informed me that this song doesn’t make any sense in about 3 different languages. Which is as ridiculous as it is iconic.
38
Dagny - Wearing Nothing
I love the choreography in this video. Dagny is a brilliant popstar.
37
Shania Twain - Poor Me
I wasn’t mad about the other singles Shania released as part of her comeback this year, but this hit me for real. Shania voice has changed in tone so much, and now it suits the melancholic Poor Me perfectly.
36
Danny L Harle - 1UL
What a song. I wish the singer was credited so I could look into her other work because I think she has a very listenable voice.
35
SOFI TUKKER - Best Friend feat. NERVO, The Knocks & Alisa Ueno
That bassline. Features galore. Nonsense lyrics. A kitchen sink bop.
34
Dinah Nah - One More Night
Dinah Nah is an international treasure, making banger after banger for anyone who will listen. As part of the excellent Spotify for Artists year-end thing, she proudly shared that she has 894k fans in 60 countries, which is quite remarkable and warms my heart.
33
Shakira - Coconut Tree
I liked Malibu by Miley Cyrus but I preferred Coconut Tree by Shakira. This song is truly meditative, and takes me straight to the beach.
32
Tove Styrke - Say My Name
Ironic because I still can’t pronounce Tove’s surname.
31
The Chainsmokers - Paris
I know it’s the Chainsmokers, but I think this song is actually very good. That final instrumental goes off.
30
PVRIS - Winter
From Paris to PVRIS, this song has one of the biggest choruses of the year. I also love that they have called the video a “visualette” - so extra.
29
Wiktoria - As I Lay Me Down
Wiktoria puts in a solid effort here, pretty much yelling her way through the entire song without taking a breath and it is incredible. Bonus points for a liberal use of “HEY” noises throughout.
28
Niall Horan - Too Much To Ask
Don’t @ me. I am the last person who would have expected to see Niall Horan anywhere near my top thousand songs of the year, but here we are. The only thing constant in life is change.
27
Lorde - Green Light
The final chorus of Green Light was one of my defining moments of Glastonbury 2017 - genuinely euphoric. I read somewhere that Lorde uses significantly more nouns than other songwriters and that’s what makes her songs so memorable. That could be true. I haven’t counted the nouns in Green Light though but it feels like there’s a fair few.
26
Charli XCX - Out Of My Head ft. Tove Lo and ALMA
Charli XCX’s POP 2 is an absolute triumph and my album of the year. Every song has about 12 different hooks and sounds so fresh. Tove Lo and ALMA are a dream collaboration on Out Of My Head.
25
KStewart - Sex 4 Breakfast
KStewart is my favourite new artist this year, and this is the first of two singles on this list. Somebody played a ‘prank’ on me at Brighton Pride this summer, and told me KStewart was playing on the mainstage at 4pm. I was so excited and squeezed my way to the front. However, at 4pm KStewart was nowhere to be seen and, to my surprise, out walks Louisa Johnson. Good stuff.
24
Tinashe - Flame
The nicest thing I have ever done for myself is to buy myself VIP tickets to meet Tinashe and see her perform at Koko in Camden. Here I am like a competition winner:
Tumblr media
It feels now like she’s never going to break through into the top tier of popstars which is a shame, because I really think she has it all.
23
IMRI – I Feel Alive
The best pop song Eurovision has had in years. Unfortunately slightly strangled by the 3 minute rule, I would take another 1 or 2 choruses at the end for good measure. Imri seems like he’s having the time of his life and that’s great to see.
22
Loreen - Body
It took a couple of listens, but now I am completely addicted to Body, and it is pretty much on repeat whenever I am commuting. Perfect for drowning out the real world.
21
Loop - As if
I follow Loop on Instagram and she seems great. This year she has released a bunch of breezy, refreshing electro-pop including As If. I’m hoping that 2018 is her year.
20
Poppy - My Style (feat. Charlotte)
My Style would be right at home on Robyn’s Body Talk, which is one of the greatest albums ever. As Robyn appears to be taking some time out, I am thrilled that Poppy has stepped in with her own brand of robo-pop.
19
Liv Lovelle - Won’t Say Too Much
For the first minute of this song I’m always like “where is this going”, and then that drop happens and it all makes sense.
18
CNCO, Little Mix - Reggaetón Lento (Remix)
Tumblr media
17
Kim Petras - I Don't Want It At All
More like Kim Petr-SASS 💁  I Don’t Want it At All is the ultimate ode to materialism and an absolute stomper.
16
Nicki Minaj - Regret In Your Tears
I feel like Nicki Minaj is too often overlooked as a popstar who sings. Regret In Your Tears is an understated jam, and she sounds great.
15
Astrid S - Breathe
Exactly what a pop song should sound like. I had a flatmate this year and we had nothing at all in common, apart from the we both listened to Astrid S. The power of pop music to build bridges.
14
Kelela - LMK
Kelela was one artist who made me genuinely excited about music this year. Her album Take Me Apart is exquisite, sounding both fresh and nostalgic at the same time. LMK is one of the best.
13
KStewart - Hands feat. Yungen
If there were any justice, this would have been huge for KStewart. But there isn’t and here it sits with less than 50k(!) views on YouTube. Hands is completely radio-ready, and could be lifted off any Ariana album.
12
Rita Ora - Anywhere
Rita Ora has had an incredible year. I love that she hosted America’s Next Top Model, then sacked it in and had 3 huge top 10s, which is probably more than your fave. Anywhere was instant for me, and her best by a long way. The nonsense post-chorus is reminiscent of those early 00s garage classics. Rita herself has said that it has no meaning, and I hope that in 2018 we are able to enjoy more songs with no meaning whatsoever.
11
Dua Lipa - New Rules
Well this one took off didn’t it. Dua’s meteoric rise has been so exciting to watch, and it was New Rules that really took it there. She just seems like a great person too, and I’m sure 2018 will belong to Dua. Another lesson in the power of a good music video to rocket launch a song’s success.
10
Aly & AJ - I Know
This song is just so perfect. The return of Aly & AJ has been the most welcome surprise. I Know is cool, lazy, atmospheric, synth-pop and a major shift from their 2007 Disney days.
9
Tove Lo - Disco Tits
I said this when I wrote about Cool Girl last year, but it’s worth repeating that Tove Lo makes it seem so effortless. Disco Tits is amazing and I wouldn’t be surprised if she wrote it in her sleep.
8
Little Mix - Power ft. Stormzy
Little Mix are just unstoppable. Every year I think they have reached their zenith and then they take it to another level. Power is single number four from their fourth album and it’s this good. By now, Jesy Nelson (the best one) knows her way around an iconic second verse, so I think it’s neat that this time her verse starts with “my turn”. Also - what a video. Well done everyone.
7
Jax Jones - Instruction ft. Demi Lovato, Stefflon Don
"All my ladies” was THE call to action this summer. What a song.
6
Carly Rae Jepsen - Cut To The Feeling
Carly Rae Jepsen has mastered the ability to make happy sounding music which suddenly hits you as heartbreaking once you get stuck into the lyrics. Cut To The Feeling was released about a week after the Manchester attacks, and for me, the line “I want to play where you play with the angels, I want to wake up with you in tangles” stuck out as truly devastating among the euphoric, soaring synths.
5
Blessed - See Through All The Colours
youtube
I’m obsessed with Blessed. See Through All The Colours is so huge and I really thought would have been their breakthrough. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be, but I think watch this space. Very excited to see what they bring in 2018.
4
Nadine Coyle - Go To Work
youtube
One of the best things about 2017 has been seeing the true joy that Nadine Coyle, gets from being a popstar, and equally, the true joy she took from the really quite lukewarm reception of Go To Work. Earlier in the year, Nadine made a surprise appearance at a popular London club night to sing a couple of choruses of Go To Work (she didn’t even stay long enough to take her coat off). I was living in those few minutes.
3
Mirela - Contigo
youtube
This song was the runner up in the Spanish pre-selection show for Eurovision, and won the televote by a landslide, but was struck down by some bizarre jury voting rules. It’s basically incredible. It’s ridiculous, it’s trashy, it’s fun. Bai-la-la-la-UH.
2
Katy Perry - Swish Swish ft. Nicki Minaj
youtube
I know. A basic bop if ever there was one, but no song this year has bopped as hard as Swish Swish. I spent my entire time at Glastobury telling anyone who would listen that I only came to watch Katy Perry do Swish Swish. Everyone thought I was joking. I’m still undecided on that music video, and that dance, but the song is brilliant.
1
Steps - Scared Of The Dark
youtube
Let’s be honest, Steps in 2017 could have been shit but instead they were amazing. The moment when this sat at number 1 on iTunes ahead of chart villain Ed Sheeran was a sweet piece of pop justice. Scared of the Dark is a banger, incredibly good pop music, and my top single of the year.

Jon ALi Presents: The Top 50 Albums of 2017!
My beautiful music lovers: We have (almost) reached the end of 2017!
This year has been a true test to the human psychique with the mess that is our current Presidential reality – but, luckily, in the midst of life’s many expected ups and downs this year, there was (thankfully) a ton of music to help distract, heal and lift us up.
First up, I’m counting down my Top 50 Albums of the Year! As per usual, this list is usually my favorite because its much easier to rank my love for an album based on if I can get through the whole thing from start to finish without banging my head against a wall (repeatedly). WITH THAT SAID: That doesn’t necessarily mean I find album #29 any more or less tolerable than the ones before or after it so please save your trolling for someone who actually cares. I love music. You love music. We love music!
K, without further ado, here’s the list:
50. Terror Jr – Bop City 2: TerroRising 49. Oliver – Full Circle 48. Erik Hassle – Innocence Lost 47. Nelly Furtado – The Ride 46. Hey Violet – From the Outside 45. Betty Who – The Valley 44. Loreen – Ride 43. Paloma Faith – The Architect 42. Shakira – El Dorado 41. Snoh Aalegra – Feels 40. Perfrume Genius – No Shape 39. Michelle Branch – Hopeless Romantic 38. N.E.R.D – NO ONE EVER REALLY DIES 37. Lights – Skin&Earth 36. Paramore – After Laughter 35. Miley Cyrus – Younger Now 34. Niia – I 33. Bleachers – Gone Now 32. Haim – Something to Tell You 31. Katy Perry – Witness 30. Tyler, the Creator – Flower Boy 29. Superfruit – Future Friends 28. Zara Larsson – So Good 27. Cashmere Cat – 9 26. Kelly Clarkson – Meaning of Life 25. P!nk – Beautiful Trauma 24. St. Vincent – Masseduction 23. The xx – I See You 22. Jhené Aiko – Trip 21. Halsey – hopeless fountain kingdom 20. Taylor Swift – Reputation 19. Demi Lovato – Tell Me You Love Me 18. MUNA – About U 17. Calvin Harris – Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1 16. Majid Jordan – The Space Between 15. Kesha – Rainbow 14. Drake – More Life 13. Tove Lo – BLUE LIPS (Lady Wood Phase II) 12. Khalid – American Teen 11. Allie X – CollXtion II
10. Kehlani – SweetSexySavage: After years years of dropping mixtapes and collaborations, Kehlani finally properly broke out in 2017 with her full-length major label debut LP, SweetSexySavage – an appropriately direct nod to TLC‘s CrazySexyCool. It’s a sleek, self-assured, and polished body of work from an artist that took her time to perfect her sound and get it just right. Though she proudly wears her influences — Aaliyah, Brandy, and any number of Y2K era of R&B belters — on her sleeve she never once sounds like an imitator or cliché. Kehlani‘s many strengths as a songwriter and singer outweigh any possible charges of imitation, and her willingness to apply subtlety, make unapologetic choices, and simply have fun is what makes her a true star. For an album released at the very top of the year, it’s had undeniable longevity, both in the R&B and Pop world. The crossover queen we deserve in 2017. Highlights: “Keep On,” “Distraction,” “CRZY,” “Advice,” “Get Like,” “In My Feelings,” and “I Wanna Be.”
9. Lana Del Rey – Lust for Life: Five albums deep, Lana Del Rey is very aware of the fact that her signature sleepy sound isn’t necessarily everyone’s cup of tea, but that doesn’t mean she’s going to stop making the music her loyal fanbase has grown to love. Compared to her other albums, especially its drowsy 2015 predecessor Honeymoon, Lust for Life is positively sunny in tone, and certainly more upbeat in tempo. Lana may sing about a “Summer Bummer” and being “In My Feelings” but the songs aren’t inline with hazy unforgotten daydreams; they shimmer, offering a confident bit of seduction for chill nights in with your bae. Lana keeps this delicate balance throughout the lengthy Lust for Life (at 71 minutes, this is an album as much as it’s a playlist, designed to be played on loop as “vibe” music), never quite committing to either distress or euphoria but rather finding an effortless place somewhere in-between the two. That said, Lana does lean slightly more towards ecstasy on Lust for Life, bathing comfortably in her slow rhythms and luxurious surfaces. She manages to sustain this mood over the course of Lust for Life‘s 16 songs, every one of which is a genuine variation of her adored signature sound. Highlights: “Love,” “Lust for Life” (feat. The Weeknd), “Cherry,” “Groupie Love” (feat. A$AP Rocky), and “Get Free.”
8. Kendirck Lamar – DAMN.: On DAMN. Kendrick Lamar proved you can actually take a more “mainstream” approach while maintaining your musical excellence. Although its definitely sonically less cohesive than to his predecessors (To Pimp a Butterfly and good kid, m.A.A.d city); the lyrics are just as strong and impactful and the music is just as vibrant and exciting. In fact, Kendrick‘s reached a whole new level of self-awareness on DAMN., he’s better than ever. In my honest opinion, Kendrick‘s been on a non-stop winning streak, and his closest competitors are still miles away and this album it’s just another proof of his genius. Highlights: “HUMBLE.,” “DNA.,” “LOYALTY.” (feat. Rihanna) and “LOVE.” (feat. Zacari).
7. Miguel – War & Leisure: Every year, thre’s one artist drops an absolutely incredible album at the tail end of the year that makes music writers everywhere wish they would’ve waited on publishing their year-end lists. This year, that artist is Miguel. 2012’s Kaleidoscope Dream and 2015’s Wildheart, saw this R&B crooner master the early versatility he displayed on his debut All I Want Is You, showcasing a playful-yet-wise mix of pop, funk and soul that certified him a true star. War & Leisure is a more ambitious, bold and confident move: a non-stop joy ride that doubles as a master class in futurist hypersexual R&B. He never fails to impress and expand within himself. Highlights: “Sky Walker” (feat. Travis Scott), “Banana Clip,” “Told You So,” “Caramelo Duro” (feat. Kali Uchis), “Come Through and Chill” and “Now.”
6. Jessie Ware – Glasshouse: Like most of Jessie‘s stellar back catalog, her third studio LP Glasshouse revolves around her signature lyrical themes: Sadness, isolation, lust and most importantly, love. But Glasshouse strives as a much bigger and mature deal than anything she’s done before, catering mostly to her husband, Sam Burrows, and the arrival of their first child. Jessie‘s has always had the effortless ability to wrap powerful emotions in irresistible melodies but here she channels that skill into soaring new heights. And with additional production credits from the likes of Kid Harpoon, Starsmith, Happy Perez, Benny Blanco, Cashmere Cat, Julia Michaels and Ed Sheeran, there was already little doubt that Jessie would come through strong. But, make no mistake: It was Jessie‘s very own signature sensual stylings that made this record a win from start to finish. Forever my queen. Highlights: “Midnight,” “Stay Awake, Wait For Me,” “Alone,” “Selfish Love,” “Hearts” and “Sam.”
5. Mura Masa – Mura Masa: In a year when mainstream radio became increasingly defined by island-like musical trends, the first full-length by Guernsey-born DJ-producer Mura Masa (aka Alex Crossan) was refreshing for the way it leaned proudly outward, bringing slinky disco, shimmering electro-pop, garage house, Hip-hop and throwback R&B together in the name of finding musical transcendence. Mura Masa‘s unlimited playfulness and genre-bending production skills — not to mention the help from Bonzai, A$AP Rocky, Charli XCX, Desiigner, Nao, Tom Tripp and Christine and the Queens — show that there’s still uncharted territory left in the land of UK dance-pop, and that thankfully someone like the young and talented Mura Masa is more than willing to put in all his time in order to find it. Highlights: “Love$ick” (feat. A$AP Rocky), “1 Night” (feat. Charli XCX), “What If I Go?,” “Firefly” (feat. Nao) and “Second 2 None” (feat. Christine and the Queens).
4. Dua Lipa – Dua Lipa: Pop music needed some serious saving in 2017. Weighted down by tired-less, island-lite radio trends, EDM beat drops (thanks a lot, The Chainsmokers) and One Direction members going solo, the pop music landscape was missing a dose of originality. Enter Dua Lipa, aka Jesus Christ. Kicking off her rise with a slew of anthem-ready singles “Be The One,” “Hotter Than Hell” and “Blow Your Mind (Mwah),” the young and versatile beauty reminded us all that, pop at its finest, all comes down to melody. While it took a lot more time than it should’ve, Dua finally blessed us with her highly anticipated self-titled debut in 2017. And the record was worth the wait: Each song bursts with huge choruses, from the truly stunning opener “Genesis” to the unstoppable force that is “New Rules,” which is finally giving her the visibility she deserves. As with Adele, Ellie Goulding, Charli XCX, Marina And The Diamonds, and so many English queens before her, Dua‘s got the undeniable gift. Dua for President! Highlights: “Genesis,” “Lost In Your Light” (feat. Miguel), “Hotter Than Hell,” “Be The One,” “IDGAF,” “Blow Your Mind (Mwah),” “New Rules” and “Homesick.”
3. Kelela – Take Me Apart: Where 2017 mostly failed in delivering huge pop records, it made up in supplying us with stellar R&B. When Kelela arrived on the scene in 2015 with her unique brand of futuristic-yet-nostoglic-R&B-electronica, we already knew her debut record would be something special. And that it most certainly is: Take Me Apart‘s title track is R&B at its most cosmic and forward-thinking, “Better” is post-breakup relatable gold, and the nostalgic Aaliyah-sounding greatness that is “LMK” is the stuff of legend status. While she might not have made the biggest noise this year, she did deliver artistry at its finest. Kelela‘s got plenty of talent up her slick sleeve and this here is just the beginning of a long career. Take notice! Highlights: “Frontline,” “Take Me Apart,” “Better,” “LMK,” “Blue Light” and “Turn To Dust.”
2. Lorde – Melodrama: Lorde delivered one the best records of the year in 2013 with her debut Pure Heroine. In the time since, she’s become a true superstar all while going through her very first real breakup. Her long-awaited sophomore album Melodrama documents the time spent between her stardom and breakup: It is a honest, sometimes dark and extremely liberating body of work, in which Lorde delivers some of her strongest, tightest and certainly most teary-eyed music to date. In the few years since her debut, Lorde‘s improved substantially upon her melody-making, resulting in massive heartbreak and youth anthems like “Sober,” “Homemade Dynamite” “Perfect Places” and “Green Light,” which is absolutely the year’s most overlooked single. Haunting, lonely and utterly empowering the whole way through. Highlights: “Green Light,” “Sober,” “Homemade Dynamite,” “Liability,” “Supercut” and “Perfect Places.”
1. SZA – CTRL: No other album quite did it for me other than the long-delayed debut from Solána Imani Rowe. SZA‘s CTRL is a straight-up, cohesive masterpiece from beginning to end about a girl navigating life in her “20 Something”‘s (see what I did there?) — dating, falling in love, dealing with fuck boys, self-doubt, anxiety, self-acceptance, growing up and much more. Her full-bodied voice floats over each intricate production effortlessly as she spits her unapologetically honest and relatable lyrics. “The Weekend” is pure genius; “Love Galore” is just as addictive; and “Drew Barrymore,” “Prom” and “20 Something” prove that SZA is not one of those alternative R&B artists with just one or two tricks up her sleeve. To put it simply, SZA is the voice of a generation. GIVE HER ALL THE AWARDS! Highlights: ALL OF IT.
Honorable Mentions: Niall Horan – Flicker, Shania Twain – NOW, Fergie – Double Dutchess, Fifth Harmony – Fifth Harmony, Galantis – The Aviary, Kelsea Ballerini – Unapologetically, The Killers – Wonderful Wonderful, Marc E. Bassy – Gossip Columns, Maroon 5 – Red Pill Blues, Harry Styles – Harry Styles, Beth Ditto – Fake Sugar and Sam Smith – The Thrill Of It All.

REVIEWING THE CHARTS: 21/02/2020
Tumblr media
Top 10
We have a slightly different type of “big week” this week, because whilst there aren’t that many new arrivals, we have a couple of massive new arrivals. The big story this week is the #1, as “No Time to Die”, the theme song for the constantly delayed James Bond film of the same title, by Billie Eilish, debuts at the top spot. It’s Eilish’s sixth UK Top 40 hit, only her fourth top 10 and her first ever #1 on the UK Singles Chart. Congratulations; we’ll talk more about it later.
Of course, because of this, a lot of our top 10 are down a couple spots this week. First of all, “Blinding Lights” by the Weeknd is down a spot to number-two but it could easily regain the #1 next week.
“The Box” is Roddy Ricch is also down one space to number-three.
As is “Before You Go” by Lewis Capaldi at number-four.
Oh, as well as “Don’t Start Now” by Dua Lipa at number-five.
“Someone You Loved” by Lewis Capaldi, on the other hand, is up a spot to number-six, possibly due to the BRITs and their muted impact this week, which I didn’t expect to be so minimal, but it’s probably because it’s shared with next week.
At number-seven, also up one space, is “Roses” by SAINt JHN and remixed by Imanbek. I checked out some of this dude’s other songs and I much prefer them to the original “Roses”, especially one which I can’t mention in polite company, so I’ll just call it “Swoosh”. It’s a good song, check it out.
Interestingly, despite a remix with DaBaby being released, “Life is Good” by Drake, then Future – which I can’t really call it anymore since the remix just makes it Future featuring Drake and DaBaby – is down two spaces to number-eight. Also, I found an unauthorised lo-fi hip hop remix of this song on Spotify and it’s kind of cool, albeit uninspired.
At number-nine, steady from last week, is “everything i wanted” by Billie Eilish.
Finally, “Intentions” by Justin Bieber featuring Quavo reaches the top 10 off of the debut last week thanks to the album release of Changes, which has had an impact not even worthy of an album bomb section, which again is pretty pathetic of Bieber. God knows how many top 10s Bieber has (19 including “Despacito”), but it’s Quavo’s fourth.
Climbers
There literally are none. Well, there are SOME, but none notable enough to make it to this section.
Fallers
On the contrast, there were a handful of pretty notable fallers this week, but nothing that big or unexpected. “Godzilla” by Eminem featuring the late Juice WRLD is down six to #11 and slowly making its way out, “Physical” by Dua Lipa disappointingly falters down five spots to #16, “Lose You to Love Me” by Selena Gomez is back down six spaces to #27, “Play Play” by J Hus featuring Burna Boy phases out down eight to #28, “Ei8ht Mile” by DigDat featuring Aitch is down seven (So close) to #33, and finally, “Wake Up Call” by KSI featuring Trippie Redd flops down 10 spaces to #38.
Dropouts & Returning Entries
Well, there are actually two returning entries due to two different national events: The BRITs live performance and wins for whatever category propelled “Don’t Call Me Up” by Mabel back up to #34. It had previously peaked at #3. My BRITs 2020 coverage is somewhere on this blog, so check that out if you want. “Perfect” by Ed Sheeran is also back at #36 after peaking at #1, because of Valentine’s Day, probably. This song’s been on the charts for like 96 weeks though so, like, stop being in love, please. I’ve already reviewed both of these songs in 2018 AND 2019, “Perfect” made my best list for last year, so no need to re-review them here.
We also have six drop-outs, the first of which is “React” by the Pussycat Dolls, out from #29. Not only can they not grasp the top 20 even, but they can’t even hold onto their lowest lead single’s charting entry for more than seven days. Geez. Otherwise, we have debuts from last week like “London” by M24 and Tion Wayne out from #32 (Which is a good song) and “Suicidal” by YNW Melly out from #37 (Which isn’t). Out from #35 is the last dregs of the album bomb for J Hus, as “Repeat” featuring Koffee exits the chart. Finally, at #39 we have “Memories” fading for Maroon 5, and unfortunately, the poetic “Pee Pee” by M Huncho out from #40.
Outside the top 40 and inside the top 75 are songs that I can see entering the top 40 (or re-entering the top 40) in the foreseeable future, the coming weeks, or perhaps just next week. Not all of them are good. Not all of them are bad. We have “Dior” by the late Pop Smoke at #73, “Death Bed” by Powfu and beabadoobee at #68, “Blueberry Faygo” by Lil Mosey at #65, “City of Angels” by 24kgoldn at #64, “Flex” by JAY1 and Jo Scofield at #60, “Breathe Deeper” by Tame Impala at #59, “Numbers” by A Boogie wit da Hoodie featuring Roddy Ricch, Gunna and London on tha Track at #53, “Stop this Flame” by BRIT Award winner Celeste at #47, and finally, “Falling” by Harry Styles returning to #41 after an emotional (and boring) performance at the BRIT Awards. Now, let’s talk about the new arrivals.
NEW ARRIVALS
#35 – “WINE” – B Young
Produced by Baby Got Beatz
Hey, remember this guy? God, B Young is a flashback to our first year on this show, where I actually did a full review mocking his song “Jumanji”, which to this day is still ridiculous, but after hearing so much Afroswing that sounds exactly the same, it almost doesn’t process to me when listening to it how bad it sounded in 2018. This is his third UK Top 40 hit and first since that year, and I don’t think anyone can beat the charming inflections and nonsensical lyrics from that classic, to be honest. I’m looking through the lyrics and I don’t see any fling-flinging of the pantieeeeeeeeees oh, so I’m immensely disappointed. He seemingly took a year off of music last year, only releasing one song, “Gucci Demon”, which missed the UK Top 40 (And is pretty decent actually, albeit awfully mixed), so maybe he’s taken a break to hone his craft. Yeah, I’m kidding, but his singing has gotten better... yeah, no, this is just boring, with a generic, non-descript guitar beat and lyrics just as inoffensive... wait, hold on, maybe not as inoffensive as I thought. In one of the verses he says he will film he and his girlfriend having sex on a GoPro, and then in another he says he’ll dry her in sheepskin after a shower and then “Just Eat” her. God, this is just trashy and pathetically so. It’s not even funny this time, so what value does this have at all?
#29 – “Forever” – Justin Bieber featuring Post Malone and Clever
Produced by Poo Bear and HARV
Last year, I believe it was March, the late Juice WRLD released his sophomore album, Death Race for Love, and somehow, in an album that consisted of songs containing lyrics such as “baby, lookie-lookie, I’mma eat you like some studio cookies”, “I don’t give a shit, I don’t give a Hoover Dam”, “now I’m running from your love, I’m not fast so I’m making it worse” (Amazing song, by the way), and my personal favourite, “I took a piss in your dead homie grave, let’s get it”, the most embarrassing performance was probably from Clever, an unknown and untalented emo-rap singer who appeared on “Ring Ring” with one of many unlistenable moments on that album. I figured this was just one of Juice’s friends and I’d never see or hear from him again. Now this gnarly dude has his first UK Top 40 hit and a feature on massive global popstar Justin Bieber’s album, alongside also one of the most famous men of the past ten years, Post Malone, who is arguably just as big as Bieber right now, and also increasingly more talented than both of these guys. Post and Bieber have had a couple songs together, one of which leaked and had Kanye in it, and was actually good, and the other was “Deja Vu”, and that one is actually pretty good as well. Somehow, this one misses the mark, probably because Clever makes me want to stab innocent civilians and Bieber has been increasingly uninteresting during this album cycle. Post Malone exists. I wish the one with Lil Dicky charted, then I could talk about an interesting news story without actually reviewing the song, as I’ve tried to do for all of the other Bieber songs this year. Let’s just to put it this way: If I were to make Changes for my wife, and publicise that fact, I would end up having to explain “Yummy (Country Remix feat. Florida Georgia Line)” to a marriage counsellor... and I’ve already had to explain that to my therapist.
Oh, yeah, and if you want another lyric from that Juice WRLD record: “I can change anything, got them Obama eyes”. What?
#20 – “To Die For” – Sam Smith
Produced by Stargate and Jimmy Napes
It’s a Sam Smith piano ballad. Next.
#1 – “No Time to Die” – Billie Eilish
Produced by FINNEAS (her brother) and Stephen Lipson
With every James Bond film comes a James Bond song, this one being performed by the youngest ever Bond singer, with Eilish obviously being eighteen. The Bond song always performs pretty well as the film is a blockbuster spy action thriller whatever the hell, and the song accompanies the movie to drive up some hype. I don’t care about James Bond as a franchise at all, and I haven’t even tried to watch one in full, so I apologise if I don’t get a part of this song, even though most Bond themes are actually completely unrelated to their respective film, even if this one is named after No Time to Die which is out this Spring. Eilish’s collaboration with Hans Zimmer is the 22nd Bond theme to get to the UK Top 40, the 14th to reach the top 10, and the second to peak at #1, after 2015’s “Writing on the Wall” by Sam Smith from Spectre reached the top spot. Bond themes have been recorded by people like Adele, Jack White, Madonna, Duran Duran, Paul McCartney, Tom Jones, Tina Turner, the list goes on, but will Eilish’s single compete with the best?
Well, yeah, since it’s the first one I’ve liked since 2002 (that was Madonna’s “Die Another Day”, by the way). It’s also possibly the first Bond theme I’ve loved, as this is actually a pretty incredible song, with an eerie piano melody that looms above the mix, which is near perfect by the way, and Eilish’s brilliant performance, with vocals that are somewhat understated and subtle at first, at some times even drowned out slightly by the bursts of horns and strings. The chorus, especially when that first guitar riff hits, is just so cathartic, and Eilish, although she does reflect consistent themes of Bond songs (“Fool me once, fool me twice”), isn’t as melodramatic as “Skyfall” or even trying to soundtrack a spy film, instead this is a bitter, bitter heartbreak that reflects how sick she is of the manipulation she has had to endure during the relationship, and the crashing cymbals, Hans Zimmer’s fantastically conducted orchestra, the borderline belting in the final chorus reflecting a climax of angst before the outro, where she practically whispers over some cute chords, to demonstrate how she has just given up at this point. There are so many subtleties in this production it would be increasingly difficult to list everything I adore about FINNEAS’ contributions here, including the spy guitar, airy flutes, and my personal favourite addition, the guitar licks from Johnny Marr of the Smiths, which just sound great. Just listen to the song if you somehow haven’t; it’s the best song I’ve seen chart in weeks if not months, just overwhelmingly great.
Conclusion
Yeah, Best of the Week is obviously going to Billie Eilish’s “No Time to Die”, with Worst of the Week going to the Biebs, Post Malone and Clever for whatever “Forever” is. Follow me on Twitter, I suppose, and bye.
