Tell the truth comic fans challenge. When's the last time you read a comic and how many have you actually read?
P.S. This isn't me being gatekeepy btw I'm being genuine because I'm gonna be honest I've probably only actually read about five series and every thing else I've gotten from movies/series, online, or fanon. I know all the important events. Have I actually read them? No because my ADHD just wouldn't. And I can't be assed having to read important events if it's in a shit run by a bad writer.
#Also ngl I was determined to read from the very start but. I would not have the time for that in any life so lmao#I have read quite a few of the early Batman comics and do actually hope to read as many of his as possible#But I have not actually sat and read all of the Batfam origins yet tho I intend to#I know them all and I've seen the panels just never actually sat down and gone through it all#I also have read a lot of the Golden Era Batman and Superman team up comics where they basically act like parents#Taking Dick out on family day trips. It's a fun read tbh#And back when I was a early teen and couldn't afford comics I watched YouTuber who would read them for you and tell you about them/show you#So I've read half of Batman Eternal from that but he stopped uploading vids about it which made me really sad lmao#So I need to get around to reading the rest myself/rereading it because it's been a while#I think I liked the story but wouldn't canonise it in my mind#I also read a bit of Suicide Sqaud that way I think? So that too#I totally don't pirate read Injustice#I like it but I think some of it is iffy. But that's the case with comics in general#Batman: Wayne Family Adventures is the only I actually keep up with#Probably because it's more accessible but also because it's the kind of comic I've wanted about the Batfam for ages#There's room for improvement and I would like to see how one similar to that style would be made like. In the fully canon mainstream comics#Because I'm aware it's very fanon/fan servicey but honesty after all the DC chaos we deserve it. But I would like to see more family#Urban Legends is really good. But Idk. I'm very particular about my vision lmao#Let me be a writer is what I'm saving. Or make a competant TV show *Glares at Titans*#Titans is good but God do they fucking butcher Jason and Bruce. I am sick of DC TV and film adaptions doing the Batfam dirty#Like. The animated movies#Tim just is never a thing ever. Why#Titans does have him and I like that. But I haven't watched that season ngl because I don't like how they write Bruce#Like. He doesn't. Look for cjild soldiers bruh. I'm disappointed with Titans because they coulda done so well#But Bruce is far too old and they made Dick almost murderous with him and they fucked up Jason. I haven't seen Tim's-#-Characterisation yet but I'm scared to at this point#Alfred must be fucking dead because he would be SO OLD if Bruce is already like 60 bruh. No offence to the actor but yeah.#Chella Man is the best thing about the show. Tbf I adore the cast other than Bruce. But everyone is just so OOC and it doesn't-#Stick to the comics at all#Idk it just. Isn't it lmao

I kinda feel like either I missed a good chunk of WEDNESDAY or people online and I must have watched different shows. In the past days since the show came out I've seen many a person complain about it - especially on Tiktok. Now obviously nobody is obligated to like this latest take on the Addams Family comic strips but like... a lot of people seem to forget that the movies, iconic as they were, are not the original? Also I've seen a lot of people be mad especially about how Gomez and Morticia were portrayed. A lot of them especially complained about how unsupportive they were and - I dunno, maybe it's me, but I didn't see that at all. Gomez literally states "Anything for our little girl" and he and Morticia are still encouraging and loving. I'd say its more that the show is told from Wednesday's perspective (Wednesday, who actively rejects her parents for now because, shocker, she's a teenager trying to figure herself out)?
I really don't know, maybe I missed something with the show. But I have been an Addams family fan since about age 9. My father especially had me watch the movies as a child because he said I reminded him of Wednesday. I watch the '64 TV series every year for October. I read some of the original comics. I adore the Addams family, and I was mlre than sceptical going into this new show - and I love it. I think it is a great modern take that stays true to the characterizations I have grown to love from the original source material and previous adaptions.
Also - I've seen many voiced complain that Wednesday was "too soft" or "too tame" and that Pugsley was too "whimpey" - first of all, personally I'd say letting piranhas loose on a swim team is not "tame", and secondly, Pugsley always was a bit softer and whinier than his sister, even back in the 64 show when he was still the older sibling.

the animation style isn't for everyone, but my family typically watches the 2009 Christmas Carol with Jim Carrey - if you're up to try another adaptation I wonder what you'd think of it! It does include both the scene of the ghosts and of Ignorance and Want, and iirc a pretty big percentage of the dialogue is straight out of the original book.
I'm actually watching it right now, and I've been checking patches of the dialogue against Gutenberg. Aside from cutting out some lines from conversations, the dialogue is pretty much word-for-word from the book. In the scene with Marley, Scrooge even says, "Thank'ee," where it would have been easy to substitute, "Thank you." Unfortunately, some of the lines they've cut are the religious ones, but I guess we can't have everything.
I was going to wait to give thoughts until I could give a full review, but I'm actually watching this version because I was so impressed by the patches of it I caught on TV, and this gives me a chance to talk about some of the things I've liked.
Jim Carrey as Scrooge works shockingly well. He really throws himself into the part. All the weird little gremliny body language makes him this loathsome creature, but in a comic way that feels very Dickens.
Starting with Scrooge signing Marley's death certificate was such a smart choice. They managed to work in the "dead as a doornail" line without narration!
I had been hoping for Scrooge to steal something from Marley's body during his death scene in the Sim version, and was disappointed they didn't go that route. But this version does! It's such a good choice.
This might be the first Bob Crachit I haven't loved--he looks too ratlike and henchman-y. But he's growing on me a bit, and I love that they include the scene of him sliding on the ice with the boys.
This version seems to overexaggerate the horror and nightmare elements of the story. Not a huge fan of that, but it could be worse.
I adore how they capture Scrooge's joy in the Christmas Past scenes. I was disappointed we didn't get him going into raptures over his childhood reading, but I've liked everything else I've seen so far of that portion.
Seeing young Jim Carrey in Victorian garb as young Scrooge was...an odd experience.
This version's Belle absolutely blew me away. Every other version of her I've seen makes her just Scrooge's girlfriend. She's there to be a sweet and sentimental lost love. But this Belle is a mature, responsible woman, who knows her own mind and heart and can make good choices for her life. This is a woman who could have captured Scrooge's heart and would have made an excellent wife. Astounding performance on every level.
Want and Ignorance were the only parts of the Christmas Present scene I've caught so far. Loved that they were included, didn't like the expansion into much weirder nightmare imagery.
I'm obsessed with how Carrey keeps Scrooge's gremliny body language even after he reforms. So it plays as "Mwahaha, I've trapped you in my evil plan to...give your family a comfortable life!" Not how I would have envisioned his post-reform behavior, but a believable and very fun choice.

Can I ask, why do you love MLM romance better than Het romance? What makes them better? I did not mean anything negative, and I know everyone have their own like and dislike but I want to know your thoughts....
Also what do you think that made Asian MLM (Danmei, BL manga/manhwa/manhua/tv series) romances different than western MLM romances?
Other than because there was a period of time when I consumed too much bad shoujo/otome that makes me kinda fed up with straight romance, I also don't actually hate it at all.
I think I've also replied in a previous ask that if I can see two handsome guys together, why do I have to see one guy with some random girl 😂 There's really no deeper reason or meaning to that, I just happen to prefer BL than others because I enjoy reading them more, that's all.
For the next question, I'm going to answer from my personal experience and point of view, so you may get different answer when asking other people.
There are A LOT of differences between Asian BL and Western BL. Most of it fundamentally lies in the culture that comes out in the story writing, the dialogues, the way the characters express their feelings, how they react to situations, etc.
It's like the color white is seen as "pure, honest, clean" in the West, but in some Asian countries, it's a color worn for mourning.
(and obviously, the way the characters are designed physically also differ between Asia and the West)
This isn't something I can easily put into words because at least in my experiences, the majority of the differences aren't something tangible. It's something you feel as you progress through the story.
Perhaps the only way I can describe it is this:
I'm Asian, I live in a Southeast Asian country, I was raised by an entire Chinese diaspora family, and I grew up watching Asian media — particularly East Asian media (Japanese, Chinese, a bit of Korean). Due to our country's history, our local media is influenced by various cultures from around the world, but mainly still a lot of Asian cultures in there.
We are people who live in high context cultures. You will find more subtleties in expressions in Asian medias, compared to Western media that is more bold and upfront about it. These subtleties and the way characters in Asian media express themselves is how I myself grew up, so I can relate so much more to that than with Western media, which totally feels foreign to me.
Plus, most people in Asia doesn't flaunt their sexuality in public, especially if they're part of the minority groups. You may come across Asian BL where the characters probably don't even confess "I love you" to each other (e.g. the recently popular danmei adaptation like "The Untamed" and "Word of Honor"). However, throughout the story, you can see their feelings for each other throughout their words, actions, gestures, and the symbolism presented in the media.
I think these subtle vs bold expressions is the biggest difference for me in both media.

3 + 17 + 21 for the book asks! :D
Yeee!
3. What were your top five books of the year?
-Swordheart by T Kingfisher
Amazing fantasy/romance about a woman attempting to be married off by her family, who finds a magical sword left to her by a deceased relative. When she draws the sword, it releases an immortal warrior bound to serve whoever wields the sword. The two of them then escape together and travel across the land in search of legal help for her. Halla and Sarkis are amazing characters, with great chemistry and the journey they take together, both physically and emotionally, is soooo good.
-City of Girls by Elizabeth Gilbert
Historical fiction/coming of age set in New York City in 1940 about a young woman named Vivian, who's been kicked out of college and is sent to live with her theatre director aunt. I'll talk about this book more in just a sec haha.
-And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie
A crime/thriller about a bunch of people invited to an isolated island by a mysterious person known as U.N Owen, however soon after they all arrive, they start dying one by one to the theme of a haunting nursery rhyme. Agatha Christie is the queen of crime for a reason and while I'm most familiar with her Poirot mysteries, this standalone book was so creepy, so atmospheric, and full of so much dread that I think it might be my favourite of hers that I've read so far.
-The Locked Tomb series by Tamsyn Muir
You may have seen me reblog quite a bit of stuff from this series and that's only because it took over my life for a good few months there. This series is so hard to concisely describe because it's unlike anything I've ever read before. It's a Scifi series set in the distant future where humanity is spread out across the solar system, and there's a House on each planet that practices some form of necromancy. Book 1 follows our protag Gideon, an indentured servant to the ninth house, being roped into joining the reverend daughter of the house, Harrow (who she fucking hates) in this competition where duos from each of the nine houses are sent to a dilapidated castle on a distant planet to try and unlock the mystery of ascending to a higher power known as lychtorhood. All you need to know is that the series is funny, action-packed, mysterious, confusing, often mind-fucky, and gay as hell. Just read it.
-She Loves to Cook and She Loves to Eat by Sakaomi Yuzaki.
A manga series this time! I read quite a few manga series that I really loved this year (Cherry Magic and My Love Mix-up were also contenders for this spot) but this series holds such a special place in my heart. It's a slice of life romance about two women, Nomoto and Kasuga, who live in the same apartment building and bond over their mutual love of food. They cook together, go out to eat together, and just spend loads of time together. It's very sweet and wholesome. Watching them grow closer and seeing how much they love spending time with the other and are just looking for any excuse to invite the other over is sooo cute. There are 3 volumes out in English rn as well as season 1 of a live action tv show adaptation, which is also really good. It truly makes my heart sing and is the best Yuri manga I've read so far.
17. Did any books surprise you with how good they were?
Here's where I circle back to City of Girls! I knew very little about the book going in and was surprised at how immediately taken I was with it! The narrative voice is so strong, and the way the book tackles so many things- friendship, romance, sex, family, passion, changing political climates, class- it's all so good. The book is a wild ride. You go through a lot with Vivian, including her highest highs and lowest lows, but through it all you see the simple journey of life that everyone goes through. It's truly an amazing book and one I'd recommend to everyone, even if you don't typically reach for historical fiction.
21. Did you participate in or watch any booklr, booktube, or book twitter drama?
I haven't participated in any but I've seen quite a few unfold. The ones sticking out to me rn are that girl on tiktok who would loudly and publicly thirst over hockey players because they reminded her of fictional hockey players she'd read about in sports romances, to the point where she was literally at games irl filming these men and catcalling them. It got so bad that the wife of one of the players came out on instagram to talk about how uncomfortable this shit made her and her husband feel and the tiktoker's reaction was to be like LOL get over it. wild.
There was the one where this indie horror author saw a negative review of one of his books, so he publicly started dragging the girl who'd made the review and even dedicated a book he wrote to her, and was just generally a massive dick.
And most recently that upcoming debut author who had made a bunch of fake accounts on goodreads to boost the rating of her book and bomb the ratings of fellow debut authors. Then when people started to follow the trail of breadcrumbs she'd inadvertently left behind, she made a fake conversation between her and a supposed 'friend' on discord admitting to being the one behind the review bombs. Eventually, proof of her being the culprit got released and she lost her book deal, her agent, and all her author friends. Sucks to suck.

PhantomStrider's Modern Cartoons Ranking And My Thoughts On Each Individual Cartoon
To Start, I First Watched This Video Back In 2016 Or 2017 (Can't Tell Which One To Be Honest). I Got Into A Handful Of Those After Seeing That Video. Here's The Video In Question:
youtube
I'm Only Speaking About Each Cartoon In Order Of His Ranking And That His Ranking May Not Reflect My Thoughts On Each Show. In A Separate Post, I'll List Off Some Of The Cartoons That Were Snubbed From The List. Now For Number 10.
Tumblr media
Right Off The Bat, We Have A Show That I Have An Interesting History With. This Was One Of Many Cartoons That I Was Introduced To Via This Video. I Like This Show, But I Wouldn't Call This My Favorite Nick Show. This Show Kinda Planted An Idea That Might Or Might Not Be Present In Most Future Projects Of Mine (Large Families). I Rarely Watch An Episode Of This Show Nowadays. I Haven't Seen Any Episodes Past Season 4 (I Saw The Movie And The First Season Of The Casagrandes As Well, But That's It). Watching New Episodes Wasn't As Much Of A Priority As It Used To Be. Also, Have You Ever Had That One Person Who Fell Into Controversy That You Were Sure Was Innocent When The Initial Controversy Was Happening, But With Hindsight, Now Knows That The One Person Really Was That Bad? For Me, That Was Chris Savino. Also, I'm Only Reading Fanfics For This Nowadays Instead Of Watching The Show Itself. Moving Onto Number 9:
Tumblr media
I Never Watched This, So I Can't Really Give My Opinion On It. I Have The Whole Thing Recorded Onto The DVR, So I Could Watch It At Some Point. It Has Elijah Wood (Frodo From "Lord Of The Rings") In It, So That Might Help Make Me Want To Watch It. For Number 8:
Tumblr media
Yet Another One I Haven't Watched. If It's On Paramount Plus Or Netflix, Then I'll Watch It. Let's Hope The Next One Is One That I Have Watched. Let's See If Number 7 Is It:
Tumblr media
Okay, This One Is It. I've Watched This Before, And Liked It, But Haven't Seen It In Years. I Was Introduced To It Through The Video. I Should Revisit It Sometime. Number 6:
Tumblr media
I Never Watched This Outside Of Clips And That One Simpsons Couch Gag:
youtube
That Show Was Just Always There, Y'Know? Considering That I Got Satellite TV In The Summer Of 2017, I've Definitely Seen And Heard About It When The Third Season Was Going. Let's See What Number 5 Is:
Tumblr media
I Watched The Whole Thing On Paramount Plus Back In 2022 And I Remember Liking It. Along With Its Predecessor, I Should Get Around To Revisiting This At Some Point. With How People Were Calling Korra A "Mary Sue" (Some Probably Still Do, IDK), I Hope Netflix Doesn't Adapt This Like They Did With ATLA, That Would Be A Whole Headache If That Were Ever To Happen. For Number 4:
Tumblr media
Aw Yeah, Now That's What I'm Talking About. I Finally Watched This In The Summer Of Last Year, And I Really Like This. What I Could Say About This May As Well Have Been Said By Many Others (Vailskibum94 Included). I Know It Led To A Bunch Of Successors, One Of Which Is On The List, While A Bunch Of Others Have Been Snubbed. For Number 3:
Tumblr media
In Hindsight, I'd Probably Have This And GF Switch Positions On The List. I'm Actually In The Process Of Revisiting This. I Posted On Here And Reddit About The Show Quite A Bit Recently. The Last Episode I Watched Was "Sophomore Slump" And, Marco Will End Up With A Rude Awakening And A Love For Linkin Park When He Finds Out About Star And Tom. Also, I Watched Saberspark's Video On This Earlier Today And Yeah, I Think Amphibia Or The Owl House Should Be In That Position On The List Instead. Also, I Heard About Star Executing Order 66 On A Lot Of Characters. After Initially Watching This, I Must Have Blocked Out A Lot Of This Show Since Initially Watching This. Whatever Excitement I Had With Seasons 1-2 And The Battle For Mewni Special Seems To Slowly Be Withering Away As The Episodes Go By. Next Up On This, For Number 2 Is:
Tumblr media
One Of The Few Shows On The List That I Heard Of Prior To Watching This Video. I Watched The Majority Of Season 1 On Cartoon Network And That's It. I Have A Lot Of Shows I Need To Get Around To Watching. Onto The Honorable Mentions. The First Honorable Mention Is:
Tumblr media
I Never Watched This. Was Weird Al Involved With This Or Something? Honorable Mention Number 2:
Tumblr media
Oh. That. Should I Remind You That The Video Was Made In 2016? This Was Another Show That I Had Heard Of Prior To Watching This Video. You Know How When Someone Uploads A Full Episode Or Movie, Said Episode Or Movie Is In The Bottom Corner Of The Video And The Audio Is Pitched Up To Evade Copyright? That's How Me And My Sister First Watched The Show. When She Eventually Got The DVDs Of The Show, I At Least Got To See It The Way I Should Have Seen It. I Think The Show Fell Off Harder Than SVTFOE Could Even Imagine. I Never Watched A Single Episode From Season 5. I Watched Videos From Cyrus The Great And Smarty Pants And Read Posts From Tumblr's Own The Immaturity Of Thomas Astruc And I Still Haven't Watched An Episode Of Season 5. I Watched The Movie Though. Before I Go Too Crazy About This Show, Let's Get To The Next Honorable Mention:
Tumblr media
Another One I've Heard Of Prior To Watching That Video. Same With We Bare Bears, I Remember Liking It, But I Haven't Seen It In Years. At Least It's On Disney Plus, So I Could Rewatch It. For The Last Honorable Mention:
Tumblr media
The Last One That I Heard About Prior To Watching That Video. I Never Watched The Show, But I'd Love To At Some Point. I Even Have The Happy Meal Toys From Way Back When. For Number One:
Tumblr media
This One I Heard A Lot About. I Watched The Show In 2020 On Hulu (Seasons 1-4) And HBO Max (Season 5, The Movie And Future) And I Remember Enjoying It. I Need To Revisit It. Thankfully, WB Is Reissuing The Complete Series Set Next Month.

I decided to open up Netflix the other day and watch the Sandman adaptation. It's as good as everyone has been saying it is! And episode 5 has some gross bits that you'll see coming if you're paying attention (also, the nice black lady and her dog don't die, if you're worried about that). The Corinthian is EVEN CREEPIER in live action.
I spent a lot of time thinking "God, that actor looks and sounds familiar" whenever the Corinthian was on screen, but I looked him up and he wasn't in anything else I've seen, so I guess he's just got That Kind Of Face (or at least lower half of it, since he's got dark glasses on 95% of the time.)
While I was on Netflix, they showed me recommendations, as algorithms do, and I browsed the anime selection to see if there was anything to add to my (extremely long) watchlist.
I decided to watch Tekken: Bloodline, because deep in my heart of hearts, I love 2D fighting games. Not at all because I've been a JinHwo shipper since the early 2000s, nope. Anyway, it's a Netflix original, originally voiced in English. The voice acting ranges from fine (Jin, Hwoarang, Nina, Paul) to cringe (Jun, Xiaoyu) to comical (Heihachi), and for some completely unknown reason, Heihachi's assistant uses weeb-Japanese and says "hai" when she could say "yes, sir." (Like, this is the ONLY Japanese in the show. I'm not counting uses of sensei, because that's been borrowed into English as a martial arts term, or the time Paul says "Mishima Zaibatsu," because that's been in the US versions of the game since forever.)
Is it any good? It's not bad... It's basically the plot of Tekken 3, with references to 1&2, with Jin finding out about his family and Heihachi being a total asshole (I mean, duh). The character designs are weird, like their faces are too small for their necks and chins are too pointy, and somehow Jin looks like Heero Yuy in profile. I laughed a couple times (Paul (or maybe Nina): You two are friends? Jin & Hwoarang (unison): NO!) and may be on the way to shipping Jin/Hwo/Xiaoyu because they're ADORABLE.
When I got my new computer for Xmas, it came with a free 3-month trial of Apple TV. I didn't do anything about it until they sent me an email that it would go away if I didn't use it, then I signed up. There's actually a good bit of good stuff on there, so I'm keeping it for 4.99 a month.
Severance: suuuuper creepy SF mystery/thriller? where people can sign up to get implants that sever their work lives from their home lives so they can work on something so secret, even their work-selves don't know what it is. Season 1 ends with a massive cliffhanger that was extremely brave, because S2 hadn't been confirmed yet. (It is now.) It stars the guy from Parks & Rec and guest stars Christopher Walken.
The Essex Serpent: based on a book, apparently. Tom Hiddleston plays a vicar who lives out in the wilds in the 1880s or so; Claire Danes is a recently widowed paleontologist. Hiddles is utterly charming, as always; Danes is a bit flat, as always (I've always liked her, but she has about 2 expressions: confused and sad). There's a doctor who wants to date her, and her BFF/maid ALSO wants to date her, but she's only got eyes for the vicar (who's married, of course). Anyway, she hears rumors of a sea monster in the river and goes to investigate it, which is where she meets the vicar and so on. You can tell it's going to be a romance, but that part is somehow not compelling.
For All Mankind: space race AU where the Soviet Union gets to the moon first and NASA has to catch up. A lot of the real-world timeline is changed in ways that are good (space shuttles! moon base!) and bad (USSR doesn't collapse). In season 3, there is an extremely honest depiction of Gay Life in the 90s and of the within-group politics of assimilation or not. I lived through it (before I knew I was queer, or admitted it anyway), and it still punched me in the gut. We've made so much progress in the last 30 years that it's easy to forget just how terrible it was back then and that Don't Ask Don't Tell was the progressive compromise. It made me think about all the puriteens here on tunglr dot com and the stupid discourse about ~flawed media~ and ~problematique~ stuff. They should watch it and maybe fucking learn some history.
The end of season 3 is dfjhadkjghk;djkhgojwhjdfxhvjh basically and season 4 can't come soon enough.

I have a very specific request, and I'm sure someone here can point me in the direction of acquiring this. (These, I guess; there are two specific fannish things I've wanted for a while.)
The litany against fear, in its entirety, in calligraphy or similar. Not twee. (I'm not actually into Dune, but having basically cognitive behavioral therapy on my wall might help me with my stupid anxiety.)
The Discworld DEATH bit "to be the place where the falling angel meets the rising ape", with or without the rest of the speech. (It's a long speech and would make the piece too busy.) Not twee. Potentially illustrated with silhouettes in the background behind the text.
I have no artistic ability nor any skill at graphic design, and I lack the patience for calligraphy. Thinking about embroidery or cross-stitch makes my fingers hurt. (My mom was an avid cross-stitcher and taught me when I was a kid. I could never hold the needle properly.)
Type of item: poster up to A2 size
Price: up to around 20 € each

I can't be the only person who wants directors or whoever makes these decisions let Oscar Isaac have his gorgeous salt and pepper hair. A grown-ass man, silver at the temples, charming smile. Please?
Also I saw a comment about Dune that said they "aged him up" to play Duke Leto, and it took everything I had in me not to comment "oh, you mean they didn't make him dye his hair?"

YOU - I like regular, normal things.
VOLITION - Mhm, I know you do. These interisolary pants are like wearing a perfect *compromise* in your nether regions. No one will call the Moralintern on you like this, that's for sure.
You're a little more moralist now, buddy. A little more *normal*. Even if you didn't want to be.
COMPOSURE [Medium: Success] - Makes sense. This is what wearing boring office trousers does to you.

Getting Back Into Writing...
I know I've been gone a while, but I don't plan on making any grand speech or introductions. I've considered closing this account multiple times since I don't know if anyone still reads my content or uses this platform. Nonetheless it's 2024 and I'm still here.
I started blogging on Tumblr as a hobby and because I really enjoyed writing. I still love writing! Writing on here acted as a journal for me, something that I could use to look back on years from now. Since I started writing with the intention of doing it for myself, I will continue to do so. I am glad to be back and will try my best to stay consistent. At the same time, I also don't want to force myself to write just for writings' sake. Instead, I'll write when I feel most inspired.
I had this idea of doing a "movie watchlist" based on my opinion of course. I wanted this list to be here for me in the future so I could see if my taste in movies has changed, matured or anything at all. Over the years I've watched a bunch of movies that I've enjoyed for different reasons. Movies were one good source of entertainment for me and my family growing up and brought me lots of fond memories. I remember being so excited to go to the video shop and pick out some of my favorites to rent and then going back home & watching it with my family. Dad and I would go to the video store and browse, sometimes taking longer than expected. I'd spend time looking at the covers reading the synopsis on the back before choosing anything. I was so proud when I picked something decent that everyone liked, I'd brag and say I had good taste! Those were the simple times when life was easy.
I digress, getting back to this list of mine. Let's just call it "Rivers' ultimate watchlist" for now. Like I said before this will be a random list of movies in no particular order from horror, comedy, romance, adventure, sci-fi and everything else in between. You might not know all of these movies or even like them but if you do find yourself bored and wondering what to watch, give it a try. I am sure you will find at least one good gem worth your time! I think I might do the same list for anime, kdrama, tv series and animated films later on and possibly update this movie list and add more titles.
Tumblr media
Here's the list: ⦁ Harry Potter 2001 1-7 (The first four movies were among my faves) ⦁ Thirteen Ghosts 2001 (I don't know why but I've always liked this one) ⦁ Darkness Falls 2003 (A horror movie about the tooth fairy. This one will scare your kids.) ⦁ The Exorcist 1973 (The first one is still the scariest of all time. I also liked Exorcist: The Beginning but these are flicks I don't want to watch repeatedly or at night.) ⦁ Resident Evil 2002 (Yes, I know it's a video game adaptation and not everyone likes it. The very first one is a classic. I've also seen all the other movies in the franchise multiple times mostly because I like zombie action and Milla Jovovich) ⦁ Without a Paddle 2004 (A great comedy full of laughs. Definitely a fun watch in my opinion) ⦁ Euro Trip 2004 ("Scotty doesn't know!" "This isn't where I parked my car". I still remember the lyrics to the song. This one is a bit raunchy but in a good way if that makes sense.) ⦁ Me, Myself and Irene 2000 (Jim Carrey is great and so is Renée Zellweger. I really liked this one. Watch with an open mind) ⦁ Alien 1979 by Ridley Scott (I can't believe some people still haven't seen this. I love aliens and this one is a certified classic. You just have to see it for yourself. I've seen all the movies in the franchise and I'm still a fan after all these years. I'd happily rewatch any time.) ⦁ Blade 1988 1-3 (Ah vampires what can I say, I do love my supernatural movies! I think Wesley Snipes totally embodied Blade and was perfect for the role. I only recently found out that there's an animated version which features more of the lore from the comic books. The action in this movie is too good to pass on. In fact, my mom loved it so much she named our dog Blade) ⦁ Terminator 1984 (The second one is my favorite out of all the Terminator films, but I still enjoyed watching the others. There's just something about man versus machine that keeps you glued to your screen, that and Arnold Swarzenegger. ⦁ Zathura : A Space Adventure 2005 (I loved it! It's a kids movie but it's still a good) ⦁ Predator 1987 (Tying into the whole Alien vs Predator universe I naturally had to watch this. Prey is the most recently released movie in the franchise, do not skip this one!) ⦁ RV 2006 (Robin Williams is so funny, great family movie to watch together on movie night! ⦁ Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events 2004 (Some might say it's depressing, but the cast are brilliant actors and I thought it was a very clever film.) ⦁ Serenity 2005 (I didn't even know there was a show called Firefly linked to this movie. I only found out years later) ⦁ Pan's Labyrinth 2005 (Dark, twisted and brilliant but definitely not meant for everyone! This is a Spanish movie by Guillermo del Toro and still one of my faves. Please watch it with subtitles and not in dub. Also see Pacific Rim from the same director if you haven't watched it yet) ⦁ Jurassic Park 1993 1-3 (What can I say, I love dinos! The original will always be my favorite.) ⦁ Because of Winn Dixie 2005 (Great family film. Wholesome and heartwarming) ⦁ Dreamcatcher 2003 (This movie freaked me out as a kid, especially the toilet scene. I also heard there's a book so I might have to read it eventually) ⦁ Apocalypto 2006 (A really great film by Mel Gibson. If you can handle brutality, give it a try. It's definitely not for the faint of heart) ⦁ The Descent 2005 (If you're claustrophobic this movie will be your worst nightmare) ⦁ A Sound of Thunder 2005 (When I was young, I thought this movie had a really interesting concept.) ⦁ The Cave 2005 (It's similar to The Descent. It has that element of fear, the unknown and of course a mysterious creature) ⦁ Wonder 2017 (A really beautiful film with a great message) ⦁ Billie Elliot 2000 (The ending was so great! And I love the soundtrack because of Elton John. My favorite song from the movie was "electricity".)
(P.S I will be posting this in two parts because this was way longer than I expected!!)

Matilda is Still the Ultimate Comfort Movie
I think we all know the story of Matilda by now, we've all either seen the movie or read the book and I think there's even a musical out now. The Matilda book by Roahl Dahl was one of my favorite books growing up and I remember reading it whenever I could, I took it out at 3 different libraries 3 different times. I haven't read it since then so it would be pointless for me to try to compare the two using solely memories and I've got no time to read a Roahl Dahl book right now, I'm supposed to be reading Aristotle's essays on rhetoric. So I'm only going to be talking about the movie which also happens to be one of my favorite movies of all time. From when I first saw it up until now when given an option of what movie to watch I'd pick Matilda if it was an option. For family movie night when deciding what movie to watch, my sister always picks Breakfast Club and I always pick Matilda.
This movie earns its classic status for being unconventional. A lot of movies place their emphasis on family, biological family to be specific and most movies or TV shows push the message that you're stuck with your family whether you like it or not. This is very narrow-minded, there are many reasons why someone would not want to be apart of their biological family. Even my favorite movie of all time, Back to the Future, pushes this message but there will be no criticism of Back to the Future on this blog. Even though I come from a very loving household and feel no need to leave my family, I like to imagine that this movie provides some comfort to someone out there with unfavorable familial circumstances, I like to think that someone out there watched it and thought that everyone would turn out ok in the end. Matilda places an emphasis on found family and we all know the found family trope but where would that trope be without Matilda. I don't think Matilda invented this trope but it did put it out there and I think this movie deserves some credit for that.
I have mentioned that the found family trope is probably the main reason why this lives on as a classic comfort film but there's many more reasons why I love this movie. As a kid, when I first watched Matilda, it changed the chemistry in my brain and I'm still witnessing the repercussions of this chemical change. The specific clip that altered the hardwiring of my brain was this :
Tumblr media
Imagine being like 10 or 11 and seeing Miss Honey for the first time. When I rewatched this movie, I saw Miss Honey again and realized that she was my type and she's only my type because as an 11 year old I watched Matilda. I think most of us had a crush on Miss Honey as kids or hell, even now.
Anyway, the review must go on as Douglas Walker (nostalgia critic) once said. I still have to talk about the weirdness of it all. Why were adaptations of children's books so dreamlike almost or even children's movies in general. There was a specific time period in the 90s and 2000s where all children movies felt Lynchian and we just watched them like there was nothing wrong with it. I guess it's supposed to be creative and from the perspective of any child watching at home. It's a bit of a shame though, now most kid's movies are just copy paste and I know most of the strange, fever dream 90s nostalgia movies were bad and terrible but they weren't bad to me, this movie certainly isn't bad and any of the other movies that I grew up with that have rotten tomatoes scores below 30 aren't bad either. Maybe the critics are looking at it the wrong way but then again, I've never trusted Rotten tomatoes critics. I encourage all creativity in art, even if nobody likes it, atleast it's creative and making you form opinions about it. Not that movies today lack creativity but rather there's an emphasis on the safer option and the more creative alternatives are pushed out of the spotlight. I just watch this movie and all I can think about is how much I miss movies like it.
I guess I should close this review now. Watch Matilda, even if you've seen it, watch it again.
Thank you for reading my incoherent ramblings, I should change my username to RamblinEvilShroom but that's beside the point. The point is that I'm still getting into the groove of reviewing stuff and it's kinda difficult having all these thoughts and ideas and formatting that into a review. I have written movie reviews in the past but they weren't good and I'm unhappy with my writing, especially after that Pikmin review because I'm so proud of my Pikmin review. I know that's the standard now and I'm going to shoot there for all my reviews moving forward.
Next time, I want to do like an overview of my night as a waiter because it was an experience. I also have a few plans in future but it's not concrete enough to mention yet.

My Top Ten Overlooked Movies With Female Leads In No Particular Order
Note: When you see this emoji (⚠️) I will be talking about things people may find triggering, which are spoilery more often then not. I mention things that I think may count as triggers so that people with them will be aware before going in to watch any of these.
Edited: 3/16/21
Hanna (2011)
Tumblr media
So, before I get into why you should watch this movie, I just want to take a moment to say why it's near and dear to my heart. Growing up as a queer kid in the early 2000s, seeing portrayals of people like or similar to myself on anything was rare at best. It was mostly in more "adult" movies or shows that my parents would occasionally let me watch with them that I'd see any lgbtq+ rep at all. Often times they were either walking stereotypes, designed to be buried, evil, or all three.
Then here comes this PG-13 action thriller with a wonderfully written main female lead who, at the time, was close to my age, and who got to kiss another girl (her very first friend, Sophie) on screen in an extremely tender and heartwarming scene. To say the least, it was a life changing moment for me personally.
Now that I've gotten that out of the way, Hanna is a suspenseful movie about a child super-soldier named, you guessed it, Hanna (played by Saoirse Ronan) and her adoptive (?) father Erik Heller (played by Eric Bana) exiting the snowy and isolated wilderness of their home and taking on the shadowy CIA operative, Marissa Wiegler (played by Cate Blanchette) who wants Erik dead and Hanna for herself for mysterious reasons.
It also has an amazing soundtrack by the Chemical Brothers, great action scenes, and it has an over arching fairytale motif, which I'm always a sucker for.
⚠️ Mild blood effects, some painful looking strikes, various character deaths, and child endangerment all feature in this film. However, given its PG-13 rating, a majority of viewers are presumably able to handle this one. Still, be aware of these going in.
Sidenote: It's recently gotten a TV adaptation on Amazon TV, although I have not watched it, and do not know if Hanna and Sophie's romantic/semi-romantic relationship has transferred over.
A Simple Favor
Tumblr media
A Simple Favor is a "black-comedy mystery thriller" centered entirely around the relationship between two mothers, the reclusive, rich, mysterious, and regal Emily (played by Blake Lively), and the local recently widowed but plucky mommy blogger, Stephanie (played by Anna Kendrick). When Emily suddenly goes missing, Stephanie takes it upon herself to find out what happened to her new best friend.
It's a fantastic and entertaining movie throughout, with fun, flawed and interesting characters. The relationship between the two female leads is also implied to be at least somewhat romantic in nature, and they even share a kiss.
⚠️ The only major warnings I can think of is that the movie contains an instance of incest and one of the main plotlines revolves around child abuse, although both of these potentially triggering topics are not connected to each other, so there is thankfully no csa going on.
Edit: I legitimately forgot there was drug use in this movie until now. So, yeah, if that's a trigger, be careful of that.
I Am Mother
Tumblr media
I became mildly obsessed with this movie when it came out. I Am Mother is a sci-fi film that centers entirely around a cast of two woman, and a female-adjacent robot who is brought to life on screen with absolutely amazing practical effects.
The plot is such, after an extinction-level event, a lone robot known only as Mother tasks herself with replenishing the human race via artifical means. She begins with the film's main protagonist, Daughter. Years go by as Mother raises her human child and the two prepare for Daughter's first sibling (a brother) to be born. However, on Daughter's 16th birthday, the arrival of an outsider known only as Woman shakes Daughter's entire world view. She begins to question Mother's very nature, as well as what's really going on outside the bunker she and her caretaker call home.
⚠️ This movie features child endangerment and reference to child death.
Lilo and Stitch
Tumblr media
When I decided to add a single Disney film to this list I initially thought it was going to be hard but almost immediately my brain went to Lilo and Stitch, and specifically about the relationship between Lilo and Nani.
On the surface, this film is about a lonely little girl accidentally adopting a fugitive alien creature as a "dog," but underneath that the story is also about two orphaned sisters and the older sister's attempts to not let social services tear them apart by stepping up as the younger sister's primary guardian. Despite its seemingly goofy premise, Lilo and Stitch has a very emotional and thoughtful center. It's little wonder how this movie managed to spawn an entire franchise.
Despite the franchise it spawned (or possibly because of it), I often find that Lilo and Stitch is overlooked and many people only remember it for the "little girl adopts an alien as a pet" portion of its plot, and I very rarely see it on people's top 10 Disney lists.
⚠️ This movie could be potentially triggering to people who were separated from their siblings or other family members due to social service intervention. There's also a bit of child endangerment, including a scene where Lilo and Stitch both almost drown.
Nausicaä and the Valley of the Wind
Tumblr media
Unlike the above entry, I did struggle a little bit with picking a single Studio Ghibli film. Most media of the Ghibli catalogue have strong, well-written, unique, and interesting female leads so selecting just one seemed like quite the task.
However, I eventually settled on this particular film. In recent months, Princess Nausicaä has become my absolute favorite Ghibli protagonist and I'm absolutely enchanted by the world she lives in.
Set in a post-apocalyptic world overun by giant insects and under threat of a toxic forest and its poisoness spores, Nausicaä must try to protect the Valley of the Wind from invaders as she also tries to understand the science behind the toxic forest and attempts to bridge the gap between the insects and the humans.
For those who have never seen the film, I think Nausicaä's personality can best be described as being similar to OT Luke Skywalker. Both are caring, compassionate, and gentle souls who are able to see the best in nearly anyone or anything. She's an absolutely enthralling protagonist and after rewatching the film again for the first time in well over a decade she has easily become one of my all time favorite protagonists.
Whenever I see people talk about Ghibli films, they rarely mention this one, and when they do mention it, it's often in passing. In my opinion it's a must watch.
⚠️ This movie contains some blood, and the folks who either don't like insects or who have entomophobia may not appreciate the giant bugs running about throughout the movie. (Although most insects do not directly relate to real life bugs, and are fantasy creatures).
A Silent Voice
Tumblr media
A Silent Voice is an animated movie adaptation of a manga of the same name. While I've never had the pleasure to read the manga, the movie is phenomenal. It covers topics such a bullying, living in the world with a disability, the desire for atonement, social anxiety, and depression in a well thought out manner that ties itself together through the progression of the relationship between its two leads, Shoya and Shouko. It's also beautifully animated. Although very popular among anime viewers, I've noticed that it's often overlooked by people who watch little to no anime. So I suppose this is me urging non-anime viewers to give this film a chance.
⚠️ As mentioned above, the movie deals with bullying, anxiety, and depression (with this last one including suicidal thoughts and behaviour). If discussion of those topics are triggering to you, than you may want to proceed with caution or skip this movie all together.
In This Corner of The World
Tumblr media
Another manga adaptation, this one taking place during WWII-era Japan. In This Corner of The World follows the life of a civilian Japanese woman, Suzu Urano, as she navigates simply living and her new marriage as the wartime invades nearly all aspects of everyday life. I think this movie is a good representation of what it must be like to be living as civilian in a country at war where the fight is sometimes fought on one's own soil. It was also an interesting look into pre-50s Japanese culture in my opinion. It's also beautifully animated featuring an art style I don't see often.
Despite it being well known among anime fans, I never really see it be brought up, even among said anime fans themselves.
Side note: I've seen many WWII dramas centering around civilians but they've almost always been about American or UK civilians. This was the first movie I'd seen that features the perspective of a Japanese civilain.
⚠️ Features the death of a child and limb loss. There's also a disturbing scene featuring a victim of one of the atomic bombs near the end.
Wolf Children: Ame and Yuki
Tumblr media
This film follows Hana, a Japan-native woman who fell in love with a magical shape-shifting wolf-man, and her trials with raising their children, who can also magically shape-shift into wolves, on her own. It's a very heartfelt movie about a mother's love and the struggles of doing right by your children when you have limited resources to actively guide and care for them. All the characters feel unique and alive in my opinion. Also, the animation is so good that my sister and I initially mistook it for a Ghibli film.
Again, like the previous two anime entries, I don't see it ever brought up outside of anime circles.
⚠️ There's some child endangerment present in the film, although none of it is the fault of Hana as far as I can remember.
Roman Holiday
Tumblr media
Roman Holiday is about the fictional Princess Ann (played by Audrey Hepburn), who while on a whirlwind tour of Europe, finally reaches her breaking point over having her entire life be one big schedule and all her words and actions being rehearsed. In the spur of the moment, she runs away in hopes of experiencing what life is like for other women. Unfortunately, she was previously given a sedative, meaning she doesn't get too far before it takes effect. Fortunately, she is found by the kind reporter Joe Bradley (played by Gregory Peck). Believing her to be drunk and unable to get an address from her (because she has none) he ends up taking her home for safety's sake and allows her to sleep off her suppose drunken stupor. The next day, he realizes who she is, and decides to take her on a fun sight seeing trip across Rome in hopes of getting the big scoop. Along the way, they begin to fall for each other.
This is my favorite black and white, old romance film. I think the relationship between the main characters is absolutely beautiful and I have a lot of fun watching it.
⚠️ I'm not entirely sure what kind of warning this film would need. However, it was released in 1953, so values dissonance will probably be at play for many viewers to at least some extent. For example, early in the film Ann is given sedation drugs by her doctor for her behavior, something that is very unlikely to happen today. Also, Mr Bradley deciding to take Ann home to keep her safe rather than call the police or an ambulance is a very pre-90s decision in my opinion.

Things I Watched/Listened/Read These Past Few Days
So, I had a rather stressful month due to an assignment deadend - things are ok now - and I have decided I would watch or read or listen to any media I could, at least once a day, to cool down.
The movies on this post are the ones I watched to cope with the stress. I will be talking more about them as each of them go, if I liked them or not and etc. This is not a critical post, though, it's more... idk personal.
1. The Secret of Kells
Tumblr media
It is Cartoon Saloon's first movie ever. It's story is simple and you may not understand the importance of the Book of Kells without some historical background, but you will be able to enjoy it either way. My favorite scene is when Aisling starts singing and aaaaaaa it's too much. Gorgeous.
My only problem though... was that one black character's design. It seemed too close to the Black FaceTM. I got kinda turned off by it.
2. Wolfwalkers
Tumblr media
Yeah, I know, I know I should have watched it in a manner to support the artists the way they deserve to be supported and I really wish I could have done that. Either way, it is a beautifully animated film and to anyone able to afford Apple TV+, I highly beg you to support this movie and watch it. There is a HEART to it, a soul I've been missing in animated movies and only occasionally see.
You may think you figured out the entire plot from the trailers, but there is one aditional plot tied to it involving Mébh and I enjoyed the surprise of it. The movie is beautifully animated, I love the accents the characters have even if I need to force myself more to understand them - you see, I am not a native speaker and always listened more to a 'standard' american accent so hearing irish for the first time was hard. I figured it out though!! Am really proud.
Pleasepleaseplease support this movie is what I'm saying.
3. Ponyo
Tumblr media
IT'S SUCH A CUTE STUDIO GHIBLI MOVIE I SHOULD HAVE WATCHED IT SOONER AJSJDJEJEWJD
I wish we could have known more about Ponyo's family, but other than that I really enjoyed seeing what happened on-screen and how it was delivered. It's a cute tale. Manages to be creative and simple at the same time??? Don't expect much more than cute and simple and GORGEOUSLY ANIMATED though
4. The Old Guard
Tumblr media
Listen, I know they did it very differently than the comics - but sometimes you just want to see some immortal gays being badass you know :,)
It's hard to point what I love more about the movie. Cinematography, the creative idea (although we should thank the comic writers for that), the characters, their struggles, representation and they even ground the immortality superpower. I don't know how they do that but every action scene is tense even if you know they can not die. You just wonder if they will be ok. I don't know how they did that!
5. Oliver Twist (2005)
Tumblr media
I do not know the public reception of this, but I have been curious as to Oliver Twist since I heard of Disney's Oliver and Company inspiration. Therefore, once Prime added it then the oportunity came and I really liked it. I know it is narrated with a humorous tone but I do feel like it's descriptions of the horrors the main character faces were all right, I might as well have learned something.
It follows what many already know as the book - I haven't read it personally, therefore I do not know if it is a trustworthy adaptation - and we have Edward Hardwicke. Just. Edward Hardwicke.
6. The Mystery of the Sleepy Hollow
Tumblr media
I did enjoy this movie, doesn't mean I liked everything about it. I did think the main character jumped into conclusions often, as if the script could not decide if he should be competent or incompetent and it really bothered me. I do am a sucker for a mix between horror and mystery, though, and thus did not mind watching this one at Halloween night.
Also, main character passes out at least 4 times in this thing - can you see this is based on gothic literature yet?
THE DECAPITATIONS THO JAIDBEIEMGKEKENFWJW THE BODIES LOOKED LIKE LITTLE AMONG US DEAD CREWMATES SJEKEKWKEKRKEKRKKRKE
7. BBC Radio 4's "A Study in Scarlet"
Tumblr media
It's a nice adaptation with many aditional moments that really warm your heart. Reading Holmes being excited is one thing - listening is a whole other and I love how his voice sounds in this one. He speaks fast but it's easy to understand and hIS TONE OF VOICE IS HIGHER THAN YOUR USUAL ADAPTATION, LIKE WATSON CONSTANTLY POINTS OUT IN THE BOOKS
Stamford gets aditional moments aswell, and they are great.
8. Upside Down
Tumblr media
I have been curious about this movie since my father watched it back in 2013. I remembered the name and the basic premise for all these years - because I thought it was unique. I never watched it before because I thought it would be a cheesy romance movie bUT-
It has an unique worldbuilding and I love it. I even liked how the camera angles made me kinda umconfy because can you imagine talking to someone who's upside down LMAO. It's world have limits too, and I really appreciate that.
I simply did not understand how can someone get pregnant in Eden's situation but 😳 who am I to question 😳. I also wish Eden could have had more of a presence too, like I wish I could have seen more of her even with her amnesia :( I felt she had one of the weakest characterizations. I wish we could have seen Adam and Eden talking to each other more, seeing they slowly grow into lovers. I also didn't like how much exposition it had as well, like I did not understand the first 5 minutes of the movie at ALL.
Still enjoyed it tho. It's just... kinda average but thats ok i guess
9. Bojack Horseman S04EP09 “Ruthie”
Tumblr media
Massive comfort episode! I must have watched Ruthie more than any other Bojack Horseman episode, to be honest.
This episode is just a huge bad day for Princess Carolyn and the way she copes with it and how it is incorporated into the story is... beautiful and tragic. I love Princess Carolyn-centered episodes, and even though this one isn't compared to the trend this series has of making a fantastic Episode 11 for each season, it is still enjoyable and sad. That and I did have a small giggle at the miscarriage jokes, I'm so fucking sorry.
10. Brooklyn 99 Pilot Episode
Tumblr media
(Of course this image is not from that episode I just find this scene funny)
I had watched Brooklyn 99 before - but it's been a long time since I've seen the first episode that ever aired. I really enjoyed it and it did make my mother and I chuckle a little bit.
God, I need to keep up with this series again; it's been such a long time since I stopped watching due to stress getting in the way lmao
Part 2 will come as soon as I finish another 10 days 😊

Currently reading: The Given Day by Dennis Lehane. A novel, based on real historical events. I chose it because I wanted to read something set in the early 1900s, and I had no idea it would be this good! It’s 700 pages, and I’m about ⅔ of the way through it.
Last song: “Beneath a Moonless Sky” from Love Never Dies, the sequel to Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera. That was yesterday. I also fell asleep listening to a YouTube video of Kingdom Hearts Traverse Town ambience.
Last series: That I finished? The new Saved by the Bell on Peacock. Before that it was Angel on Hulu, although that was already over a year ago I think. I’m not a big TV watcher.
Last movie: Not too long ago I watched the 1930s film adaptation of the novel Ramona, one of my favorite books. (That’s the one by Helen Hunt Jackson, not Beverly Cleary.)
More recently I watched the 25th anniversary performance of Phantom of the Opera at Royal Albert Hall because Lindsay Ellis talks about it so much. Does that really count as a movie? It’s not the movie, it’s a performance of the stage musical that was filmed.
Sweet, savory, or spicy: Why not all three? Actually, I love sweet stuff.
Currently working on: I have my own universe of interconnected stories that I like to work on from time to time, just as a little bit of self-indulgence, but I’m sort of at a loss as to where to go with it next.
Tagging: @bagginshieldhappiness @bespectacledbookworm @complicatedundertones @drszm @i-have-beards + anyone else who feels like doing it. I don’t have that many mutuals. I need to be more social.

I'm watching the movie of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera, and exactly 22 minutes in, there's a scene of some of the audience members mingling with the cast and crew backstage, and in the foreground right, Meg passes an effeminate young man who appears to be flirting with an older, bald gentleman with a white mustache. I thought it was cute.

So, I just watched Love Never Dies (Andrew Lloyd Webber's sequel to Phantom of the Opera) for the first time, and...I kinda liked it? I'm not saying it's "good", I think I'm just a sucker for any kind of Victorian/Edwardian era melodrama. Plus Lindsay Ellis has talked about it extensively, providing many laughs, and my local library had the DVD to borrow, one dollar for a week, and now I'm richer for having seen it.

Addams Family Values, one of my all-time favorite comfort movies, is free with ads on YouTube right now. Even though I've seen it enough times to be able to quote the entire thing, I thought, what the heck, I'll give it fresh watch.
I really should own the damn thing. I used to have it on VHS, taped off of TV, which was how I watched it all the time back in the day.

Hi!
I'm part of a lot of fandoms... Harry Potter, Divergent, Darkest Minds, Good Omens, Percy Jackson and His Dark Materials to name a few of the book-based fandoms (obviously there are TV adaptions for I think all of those). There is also (obviously) the MCU. I know there's more, but I can't remember them at the moment.
(I saw that you'd reblogged two ask lists, so I've chosen some from them)
From this one:
‌1. favourite place in your country?
13. does your country (or family) have any specific superstitions or traditions that might seem strange to outsiders?
19. do you like your country’s flag and/or emblem? what about the national anthem?
‌21. if you could send two things from your country into space, what would they be?
27. favourite national celebrity?
From this one:
22. Would you ever want to swim with sharks?
41. When was the last time you ate a cupcake?
57. Do you believe in ghosts?
71. Can you curl your tongue?
84. Can you hold your breath without holding your nose?

(can I just say, I absolutely love this, and I completely believe that this is how Thor would react to transphobes (and probably any queerphobes))
((okay, so this one is a really long one...))
Hi anon 🐍
(yeah it is very long indeed maybe I'll answer this in parts but I'll answer everything I promise 😅)
I'm more into LOTR than Harry Potter tbh, those and The Hobbit are part of my absolute favorite trilogies, with Back To The Future ofc.
I've never watched Darkest Minds or Good Omens (I've seen a lot of gifs tho). Another shows I remember now are Dark and Black Mirror. I watched The Rain too but last season was a bit disappointing so 🙄
I'll answer some questions in a reblog later 😉
(and ofc Thor would smash queerphobes, he wanted to be a Valkyrie for god's sake 😂)

I've actually just seen Gosford Park recently and I really enjoyed it! Do you have any similar period/murder-mystery film or series recommendations? Other than Agatha Christie's Poirot, which I ADORE
Weeeell I mean Gosford Park is a very specifically good murder-mystery film which one doesn’t often see the equal to, unfortunately; but it was like a perfect storm of great casting and also I cannot understate the importance of letting Robert Altman do his thing and allowing those characters to really come alive and also keeping the focus largely on the servants’ perspectives while everyone upstairs remains assholes or enigmas, because quite frankly we can see the pendulum swing the other way when Fellowes is let off the leash and the focus turns back to principally or solely the rich upstairs folks. Apparently he did better with Belgravia but equally I’ve heard it was shit and didn’t feel like spending my money on it, so I feel like maybe Julian is only as competent as his director/producer/editor, and when forced to work to other purposes apart from #richpeopleproblems he can do tight and well-crafted writing, but at this point he’s lost my trust so I’ll just enjoy Gosford Park and leave him to do whatever the hell he wants.I love Agatha Christie and am all over the TV adaptations for Miss Marple and Poirot; especially David Suchet’s Poirot, which I feel is definitive. That being said I’ll probably go to see the new Orient Express film because apart from Ken Branagh and his moustache being a goddamn nightmare and Johnny Depp being there at all, the rest of it looks hugely intriguing. And whatever I think of Ken as a blowhard up-his-own-ass person, his directing projects are generally films I enjoy. But I will say, if you like period dramas and you like murder mysteries--check out the Spanish series Gran Hotel, which spans 3 seasons, though the third season has a tonne more episodes than the first two, it’s weirdly broken up. And I won’t lie and say it’s perfect, there’s things about it that drive me nuts. The third season feels like significant plot-changes were made after the actor of one character passed away in the break between seasons 2 and 3, so another character was given some of their responsibilities, but that muddies the waters of what that character was originally meant to do (I AM TRYING NOT TO SPOIL THINGS BUT I HAVE A POINT I SWEAR) so things get a bit confusing and murky but at the same time the stakes just get higher and higher and this show is beautifully NOT AFRAID TO GO BATSHIT. You want a murder mystery? You got it. Family secrets? Plenty of those. Multiple shipping opportunities? Go nuts. (Because the main love story gets pretty old pretty fast IMO and the heroine can do better ‘cause the hero needs to grow the fuck up honestly and you can pry my conviction that her peppy bisexual best friend is deeply in love with her from my cold, dead, queer hands.) ALSO if you love Agatha Christie you are IN FOR A TREAT because it’s clear the writers love her, too, and there are shout-outs to Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot all over the place with two characters in particular that are loving homages to these two. And I will not spoil A Thing That Happens but when you see it, you’ll know what I was referring to. I screamed with delight. Like, God bless this messy, loving romp of a show. And my personal blog is full of spoilers in the Gran Hotel tag but it’s just amazing madness, honestly, and now I feel like I’m due for a re-watch. I bought Spanish DVDs and went through with the captions on and Google Translate and my distant memories of high school Spanish class to aid me in figuring out what the heck was going on and I love it all deeply.
