rise and shine for day 17 campers!

apologies that this one's a bit late, i'll get back into the habit of pre-writing and using the queue tonight (ive got it all planned out) and i thought i'd get this written in the spare few minutes i have before i've got to trek to get some of my yorkshire trip photos developed (what can i say? phone cameras are great and all but there's nothing quite like film <3)

welcome to the first challenge: decades week!

the theme

the theme for this is placing canon in a different time frame whether it be writing something pre-canon, post-canon, or moving canon altogether to another time period. any time period is up for grabs here.

some examples for ideas would be:

pre-canon writing about the lives of the canonical characters

canonical characters in the 1800s

post-canon writing about the lives of the canonical characters

canonical characters in the 1990s

etc etc.

you can even move it to a more futuristic setting if you like, so long as we're not in canon's time frame. for less defined canons, you can always come to the askbox to inquiry about an idea you have or to get a better feel.

rules for works

as stated, these challenges are meant for all of s. e. hinton's books, tim hunter's adaptation of tex and the two coppola films. characters and plots from the television show and the musical aren't applicable. you can do crossovers with hinton canons for this as well! (ie: you can cross over tex and hawkes harbor but you cannot submit a work involving any musical or television version of canon or any characters found solely in those canons.)

you can submit works involving OCs, but OCs cannot be the main focus. ie, you can submit a work involving a Ponyboy/OFC but the focus has to mainly be on ponyboy or mainly involve him. you can write about side characters or parents as well.

this challenge is also only for participants who are 18+. i will vet everyone who wants to participate; that's why it's semi-public. if you're underage, you will not be allowed to participate and i reserve the right to deny participation if harassment or bad behavior occurs.

entries must hit the minimum for 3,000 total words. when i say that, i mean if you want to write three separate one shots, all three would have to add up to 3k or more in word count. or if you wanted to do drabbles or longer pieces, they still need to hit the 3k minimum when they're submitted. you aren't obligated to write one whole piece that is 3k — all you need to do is get there whether it's over one work submitted or multiple.

yes, you may submit multiple works! just please submit them and then post them during the week of posting.

as stated elsewhere, your works will not be policed. that means that if someone writes a ship or tackles are more controversial subject or has a rating higher than T/PG-13, your works are fine and allowed. the only thing that is required is that you tag appropriately and rate appropriately on AO3 and you treat fellow people who are involved respectfully.

do not post your works until posting week! i understand you might get antsy, but please wait until submission week.

timeframe

signup open may 1st, 2025 and close may 10th, 2025. ten days feels like plenty of time to get prepared. all i require for sign up is your tumblr url, your ao3 user, the idea you have and the decade. that's it. once you sign up, you can more or less begin to write unless i have a follow up question/clarification.

mid-way check in. since this is the first challenge, we'll have a check in around may 20th to see how things are going. this is going to be a tumblr post with responses, and maybe shooting a message.

On June 17th 1567 Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned in Loch Leven Castle.

Mary, Bothwell and their supporters faced off against the Confederate Lords at Carberry Hill two days earlier, after some beatings of chest and little else the Queen negotiated that Bothwell could leave the "battlefield" and she surrendered herself to the Confederate Lords, who immediately reneged on their promise to treat Mary honourably.

From the battlefield, Mary was first brought to Edinburgh where she was treated atrociously by the people of the city, cries of ‘burn the whore’; ‘burn the murderess’! were hurled at her by crowds. These words ‘much amazed her and bred her tears’. It must have been truly shocking for the 25-year-old queen to hear such insults when she had known only deference and respect throughout her entire life.

The Scottish queen was taken secretly by ferry across the Firth of Forth. In a letter from the Earl of Huntley to the Bishop of Glasgow on 17th June, the Earl describes that the manoeuvre ‘has been so secretly “convoyed” that the same could not have been “prevenit” ‘. Dressed only in a mantle thrown over her nightdress, the clandestine party pressed forward northwards to Loch Leven and according to John Guy, Mary’s biographer, ‘shortly after daybreak on 17th June, she climbed into a boat, and was rowed to the island in the middle of the loch’.

According to Historic Environment Scotland, the Scots’ queen may well have been lodged initially in the round tower projecting from the curtain wall, also known as the Glassin Tower. Her lodgings were on the middle two floors of this four-storey structure. The first of these was a comfortable living space with fireplace and oriel window overlooking the loch; the second a bedchamber above it and accessed via a straight flight of steps.

According to the Calendar of State Papers, Sir Nicolas Throckmorton’s letter to Elizabeth I explains that while incarcerated in Loch Leven Castle, Mary was waited on ‘by five or six ladies, four or five gentlemen, and two chamberers’. Her gaolers, Lords Lindsay and Loch Leven (Sir William Douglas) kept her ‘very straightly’. This was because the queen was unbending in her reluctance to have her husband prosecuted for the murder of Lord Darnley. Throckmorton goes on to say that Mary ‘will not consent to abandon Bothwell, but avows constantly she will live and die with him’.

It seems that it was probably in this third-storey bedchamber that Mary miscarried of twins at about three months into her pregnancy. The father was James Hepburn. Mary must have felt heart-broken and angry in equal measure as, by that time, she was beginning to realise how much Bothwell had used her. In one of her letters she writes, ‘We cannot dissemble that he has used us as otherwise we would have wished or yet have deserved at his hand’. It is said that her twins were buried somewhere on the island. If this was the case, at around three months gestation, each foetus would have fitted into the palm of a hand and therefore the graves would have been tiny.

Honestly envisioned this as a much larger/complex mixed-media piece, so might revisit down the road to incorporate more of the impersonations and symbols.

This album, (to me) was such a profoundly vulnerable reflection of the human condition, personal identity, motherhood, and mortality - among other things (sickness, fame, love to name a few).

Hard to fully understand and appreciate for those who don’t know much of Halsey’s backstory, but this project is a brutally honest and devastatingly personal confessional, a search for empathy and meaning that makes music most enjoyable to me because it scratches at the inner walls of my brain. More especially when I’m so invested in the PERSON behind the music, and I don’t think I’ve ever cared about a complete stranger to such depths ever of just wishing them genuine support and happiness.

The bad:

Triple Duty Bodyguards by Lily Gold - I have to admire her “work smarter not harder” mentality because I have read two of her books now and every character is exactly the same from book to book with like 2 details changed about their physical appearance. I had essentially a 2 day long panic attack and my brain was on hyperdrive and this literally made me stop thinking any thoughts for the 5 hours it took to read this so like, do with that what you will.

Something Spectacular by Alexis Hall - the sequel to a pretty mediocre Alexis Hall book but in this one oh my GOD the romance didn’t work for me at all. We were constantly told how interesting and captivating the love interest was but I cannot tell you a single thing about them other than they’re an opera singer. V boring, only finished it because the friend group dynamic was fun

The fine: Killadelphia, Vol. 1-3 by Rodney Barnes - cool concept but it kind of felt like the author was like a 12 year old kid who didn’t know when to stop. “What if there’s vampires in Philadelphia right now and former president John Adams is one and so is his wife! And so is Thomas Jefferson! And Sally Hemings is too but she and Abigail Adams are in love! And then Tituba shows up and she’s a WEREWOLF.” These are all things that happened, I will not be continuing.

Radium Girls by Cy - another graphic novel bc I was on a kick this month? Anyway the art is cool but the translation from French to English is not great and kind of distracting!

She Drives Me Crazy by Kelly Quindlen - what if we pretend to date for Reasons and you’re the cheerleading captain and I’m a basketball player and we kiss and we’re both girls? V cute v fun

We Could Be So Good by Cat Sebastian - what if we’re best friends working at the same paper in the 1950s and I move into your apartment after my fiance leaves me for another man and then we kiss and fall in love and we’re both boys? V cute v sweet

The good/great:

Your Driver is Waiting by Priya Guns - viscerally sweaty and dirty and ANGRY but in a good way. Also made ME angry which I thought was a sign of good writing. Read for a little bit of catharsis if you’re upset that you’re fuckin broke and will always be fuckin broke bc nothing seems to get better and you kind of want to set something on fire, just a little bit, as a treat.

Pardon My Heart by Marcus Jackson - really honest poetry about Black masculinity that’s sweet and heartbreaking. Favorite poems were the title poem, and the three poems at the end that are about Jackson’s wife and how much he loves her.

The Woods, Vol. 1-9 by James Tynion IV - scratched the Stranger Things itch in my brain. Twisty and never went the way I thought it would. Loved these characters and their journeys!

Sweeney Astray, translated by Seamus Heaney - this weird-ass book from the 17th century was a WILD ride and I loved every second of it. Read it more for the historical info rather than its literary merit, if that makes sense? Sweeney gets cursed by a Christian king for being a dick and spends the entire book wandering the Irish countryside, eating watercress, and insisting that no one wants him around even when several of his family members say “WE WANT YOU AROUND”

Bitter Root, Vol. 1-3 by David F. Walker - read if you liked Ring Shout because the premise is so similar! The art style was great and I liked how expansive the world was. Great characters and a great storyline.

Electric Arches by Eve L. Ewing - fuck Eve Ewing for being so GODDAMN talented, it makes me sick, please read this.

Currently reading: The Devil’s Element by Dan Egan, which gave me like 4 more solid examples of the British Empire being fucking monsters (and American companies causing so much environmental harm and then saying it’s too expensive to fix)

Cassidy was a kid with. a lot of issues. anger issues, abandonment issues, trust issues, issues with authority, the list could Keep going. add the fact it's AuDHD into the mix, and y'know. It Needs Help.

was pretty close to the Afton Family (Mike specifically), all things considered...which makes what happened all that much Worse.

didn't possess Fredbear originally; possessed the Fredbear plush (belonged to Mike).

due to no real Definitive evidence that Cassidy died at Freddy's (the only evidence that connected them to the pizzeria was the fact that they were last seen arguing with an employee, and then seen starting to walk home on the side of the road), Cassidy was only really tied in with the rest of the MCI due to Freddy's being the last place they were seen alive. the employee they argued with was the initial person William framed the crimes on.

Mike witnessed their murder. that's what fucked him up so bad.

it didn't die at Freddy's; William drove its out to the lake to dump its body, only to realize Cassidy wasn't dead. he strangled it before throwing them in the lake while it was trying to catch its breath.

Kingfisher – august 6th ⤷ not only a fantasy t kingfisher, but a 300+ page novel that is a dark reimagining of the goose girl by t kingfisher? oh, please sign me up immediately. this is a need. ☆ Mistress of Lies by K.M. Enright – august 13th ⤷ 2024 is really the year of queer filo debuts and i am living for it. also the cover of this one is so beautiful and so haunting. ☆ An Academy for Liars by Alexis Henderson – september 12th ⤷ i really enjoyed the year of the witching many years ago, and alexis’ writing is so gorgeous. i cannot wait to read their adult gothic dark academia as soon as i can get my little gremlin hands on it! 🏖️ BACKLIST BOOKS ☆ Not in Love by Ali Hazelwood ⤷ i’ve really enjoyed everything i’ve read by ali in the past, so i know there is a really good chance that i will also have a good time with her newest release! ☆ Private Rites by Julia Armfield ⤷ last year, i fell in love with our wives under the sea by this author and i actually think that this has a really good shot at being one of my favorite books of 2024! i truly can’t wait to get to this one! ☆ An Education in Malice by S.T. June 16th - 18th

June 16th

I woke up at 2 am to leave for the airport at 3 am…ouch. We all met up, dead from exhaustion, and hopped in our taxi. The nice part about leaving this early was that no one was on the streets, and we flew into Scotland overlooking the sunrise (picture 3). It was so pretty.

Part of our group booked a tour for today, so they left while the other five of us went to explore. When we finally arrived in the city center, it was 8 am. Because it was so early, we decided to go get breakfast. We chose this super popular cafe we heard about. We all left happy and ready for the day. 

We walked over to St. Princes Park (picture 7) to take in the scenery. I read the book that my classmate gave me on a bench while the rest sprawled out in the grass. After relaxing for about an hour, we walked around the park more and then went to Victoria Street (picture 4). 

It was difficult terrain to say the least. It is up a hill with an 80-degree slant. It was a hike to get there, but worth the view. The buildings were so colorful. I found out later that day that it was what inspired Diagon Alley in Harry Potter. 

While there, we stopped in a pub to hide from the heat for a little while and then walked another 30 minutes to the Airbnb. It was such a pretty house, but it had quite a few problems. It had no WIFI, there weren't enough sheets and towels, the fridge would not turn on, the shower didn't really work, and there was no TV (like they advertised). We had to call the property management company to express our disappointment and have someone come out and address everything.

June 17th

We woke up the next day pretty early because we had tickets for Edinburgh Castle (picture 6 & 8). We ate in a small neighborhood in a cafe. After that, we booked it to the castle. My knee was feeling the vast incline on the way up the hill (the same hill from yesterday also has the castle on it). I made it through the 30-minute hike, however, and felt swallowed by the castle’s mere size. I cannot imagine how people climbed this day in and day out with heavy armor or carrying goods.

The castle was extraordinary. There was so much to see. The castle itself was vast with tall towers overlooking the entire City. I was engrossed in the history I was standing in. We visited rooms and learned about the dungeons, the crown jewels, and the birthplace of some of the Kings. We were also there in time to see the changing of the guards. 

After the castle, we went to some of Scotland's national museums. They were similar to the Irish museums (picture 1 & 2) but the scenery was all so different. I felt like there were more portraits and religious paintings depicting the eras. After we walked through the museums, we decided to go back to Victoria Street. We hung out and explored the area more. Some people in the group decided to go to this cafe that sold these good marshmallows. Me and my classmate decided we wanted to explore more so we walked on. 

We saw the newly designed Parliament buildings, the famous cathedral, and the Scotts statue and monument. We then went to dinner and headed back to the Airbnb. When we arrived back, the WIFI and the fridge were working!

June 18th 

The last day of the trip, We packed and cleaned up. We wanted to make sure that we left Airbnb better than when we got there because we were asking for a refund for all the inconveniences. 

We left pretty early in the morning to go on our tour to see some of the Highlands (picture 10), the castle where they filmed Harry Potter (picture 9), and more. The tour was so much fun! It was very bumpy, but we saw so much of the Highlands. It was everything I expected and more. I loved seeing the rolling hills, some filled with Highland cows and sheep. 

We stopped in a small neighborhood to get some coffee before continuing on. The long anticipated wait was over and I was so excited to see the castle. I grew up with Harry Potter, and this has been something I wanted to do since I was young. I somehow separated from the group, but I got to see so much. From the top, I saw a herd of sheep hanging out in the shade at the bottom of the castle. The view was so green in color and the gardens were breathtaking like they were right out of a picture or movie. I also saw crown jewels, the art and all things castle related.

We then continued on to Balmoral Castle (picture 5). We were unable to enter because it was sold out, but it was huge! From the outside, it was this beautiful piece of architecture that rested upon a mountain. It had walls all around it but you could tell it was breathtaking. It started to rain on us so we decided to get ice cream in the city that surrounded the castle. 

Once the rain let up, we ventured back to Edinburgh to have dinner at an Italian Restaurant. We then went to the Airport and waited for our 11 pm flight back to Dublin.

I found a man in the Chicago River while volunteering at a family Pride event on June 17th. Here is what I remember:

Hoping he was a mannequin, or a fallen tree. Clinging to that idea like the lifesaver he never got. Turning away so I didn't have to see his face.

My nervous system, annoyingly waiting for this kind of day to shine. Adrenaline’s cool, calm, clarity on the phone with 911; notifying the Salt Shed staff; warning everyone in the vicinity what they were about to see; giving a statement to emergency services.

That ADHD superpower of being infallible in a crisis quickly fading when I saw a body bag whisked away by people in scuba gear. Breaking down, held by my loved ones, standing under a banner that cruelly read: “Queer Without Fear.”

The push notification I got later that night with an article confirming his identity, as if I were just an unaffiliated, concerned Chicagoan: Noah Enos, 26. Missing after the King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard concert.

I can't seem to stop raining tears for him. They splash in my glorified kiddie pool of a backyard hot tub; hide in the spray of the shower; well in my eyes over the glass of water I've been lovingly reminded to drink.

Unraveling in the aftermath. Finding myself, over and over again, standing at the edge of Lake Michigan.

This place has always been the perfect vessel for me to pour in what doesn’t fit inside of me. The waves churn with eleven years of my secrets and overgrown feelings. The water bubbles with the dreams I left here for safe-keeping. Where did Noah’s secrets and dreams go when he died? I wonder if they’re here, swimming around with mine.

Though I never met Noah, our lives will be forever linked. Where our stories meet, mine continues and his ends. What happened to him is random and unfair and I cannot make sense of it.

My tide rises, from my legs up to the lump in my throat, filling me to the brim. If I take on more water, I might drown, too. When I can't hold it all anymore, I have to let the excess wash away at the lakeshore.

So, I let my saltiest tears fall into the very body of fresh water where Noah lost his life; somehow still beautiful and magical as ever.
