(spoiler free!) im currently reading the player of games by iain m banks and i love the way the main character is written so much. gergei hails from a post scarcity society, which means everyone gets whatever they want whenever they want it, and everyone has the absolute right to bodily autonomy and self determination. all needs are met, and there are no imposed prohibitions against anything. gergei happens to be an incredibly talented gamer, hes famous even for his ability to learn new games incredibly fast. the story is about him playing a game. his character is so compelling, and charismatic, and i am so cheesed to find a book this good. i need to get more 40 year old independent artist friends so i can get more book recommendations like this.

after a year and a restart i've finally finished 'consider phlebas' and i had a pretty good time but what was up with fal n'geestra. i liked her and her companion (who has a secret crush on her, sad we didn't see any more of that), but i do wish she'd interacted more (or at all?) with the main story, outside of just being a look at the culture's culture. at least she got, like, 400 years of good mountain climbing in

Every time I see your username, all I can think of is "even peace activist has to admit that Barrett .50 Cal is pretty damn cool".
I initially stole the name from a ship/Mind in an Iain M. Banks novel but it's got a vibe that (to me at least) evokes Zechs from Gundam Wing and also Hideo Kojima's ouvre in general "War is horrible, but look at this cool walking nuclear powered tank" so yeah, the Onion article passes the vibe check.

EXCESSION - Iain M. Banks (1996)
People change. It must have been 2008 when I started reading fiction again, and Iain Banks’ Culture series became among the first things I devoured. Excession was my favorite of the series back then, and I decided it was time to reread it – hopefully to be entertained and awed again, and, at the very least, to take a long, hard look in the mirror of time. For those unfamiliar with Banks & the…

"The sky was aquamarine, stroked with clouds. She could smell the grass, and taste the scent of small, crushed flowers. She looked back up over her forehead at the gray-black wall towering behind her, and wondered if the castle had ever been attacked on days like this. Did the sky seem so limitless, the water on the straits so fresh and clean, the flowers so bright and fragrant, when men fought and screamed, hacked and staggered and fell and watched their blood mat the grass?
Mists and dusk, rain and lowering cloud seemed the better background; clothes to cover the shame of battle."

Use of weapons, par Iain M. Banks (Orbit, septembre 1990)
Tumblr media
