So there is a certain character type that I cannot for the life of me pin down a word for... It's yakuza adjacent, but often not explicitly part of the actual gangs. a kind of shady businessman, but not the overly clean and corporate type. sort of a scammer or a conartist or grifter, but not as small time as that sort of makes it sound? I want to say it's a look associated with loan sharks, but I can't quite substantiate that.... I swear it's a thing you see in the context of Japanese crime fiction all the time, especially set in the 80s or 90s, yet I can't really point to any characters that really fit the bill off the top of my head, as they're almost always background characters. Somehow the only one I can think to pinpoint is that one random villain-of-the-week in Kill la Kill?

The persona itself actually has a shocking amount in common with, like, the classic American used car dealer, especially on the east coast either around the New York/New Jersey tristate or down in like Miami, usually with a hefty bit of Italian or Jewish racism mixed in... The style though, the gold chains, the tacky superficial try-hard glitz and the pushy rough around the edges attitude, very self-made and informally educated businessman, surprisingly successful but still not really a "big" success, and just like this Japanese counterpart I'm thinking of, almost always technically in business with local organized crime without ever being "part of the family."

Like it's such a cliche that it's literally cartoonish, and it's funny how almost perfectly beat for beat the US and Japanese counterparts mirror eachother, except that the Japanese character type, as far as I can recall, isn't associated with used car dealerships,

anyway point is... That's what Marechiyo and his dad are supposed to look like. That and a bit of yakuza/delinquent in the case of his dad when he was younger. Notably his dad straight up has a punch perm in the present day, which was The quintessential yakuza look in the 80s. And his younger version seems to also have a perm but also a regent style pompadour that's a little more youthful delinquent aligned than outright criminal, and again a look that has become so cliche as to become cartoonish to the point of being a costume you can buy in a store.
Although whatever the hell Marechiyo has going on in the new hell arc, i cannot identify.

But it's interesting that it's a different kind of yakuza look than what Iba has going on. His dark shades, the tight perm, the laborer's bellywarmer, his zanpakutou being a tanto sticking out of it, the overall posture with the one shoulder out of his kimono, even that his sword is alternatively either a Yakuza style tanto tucked into a chest wrap, or a seemingly normal katana but without a crossguard is to evoke the classic yakuza image of using a shirasaya --a plain white wood sheathe with matching handle and no crossguard or wrap-- rather than a more traditional katana. And of course his dog-like loyalty to Komamura are all iconic stoic Yakuza romanticism. The hardboiled, honor-bound, manly-man ideal of the folklore-like reputation of the yakuza. The thing you'd see in countless old movies or pulp thriller style seinen manga, sometimes even published by yakuza family magazines themselves.

His mother also plays into this, even in her barely existent appearance in the MASKED databook, as she's a pretty distinct play into a very particular matronly character type, generally typifying either a proprietress of a traditional inn, a powerful samurai family matron, or a yakuza boss's wife --all kind of loosely overlapping and all drawing from traditional roles of a head of manor or estate.

I dunno where i was going with any of this. But between these character types and Kensei's biker gang thing, I think it's funny how much of Soul Society's classically japanese vibe is just organized crime. Even the general population of unnamed background shinigami lean into a very modern thuggish aesthetic
Also i don't know what to make of the idea that the Shihouin have endorsed the Omaeda family like this over the years, especially when they're role among the royale houses seems to be to safeguard various treasures and relics. Between that and apparently being at least two generations of heads of a division of the secret police, it's hard to imagine the Omaeda were just independently wealthy unrelated to all that.

Omaeda— rice crackers, being a big brother, protecting family with one's life, deceiving appearances, stacks of cash, a spiked iron ball attached to a chain, buying gifts for loved ones, ivy leaves, gold rings, stacks of gold ingots, giving piggyback rides, a grand mansion, lavish banquets, expensive cars, being smarter than how one looks, the smell of strong cologne, undying loyalty to one's superior and family, candies, men's magazines, lazy afternoons.
Kira— yellow carnations, rainy and cloudy days, writing haiku poetry, soft candlelight, a heart burdened with grief and regret, thick blankets, hesitant smiles, love for one’s friends, the smell of earth after rain, hot showers, a bowl of hot soup, leather-bound journals, cold hands, quiet laughter, working late at night, trusting reluctantly, loyalty to a fault, a cold and calculating fighter, a mug of warm green tea, grieving alone, drunk karaoke with friends, an organized workspace, appreciating the arts, painting with watercolours, listening to white noise, bearing burdens alone, the weight of guilt, sleeping peacefully after a long time.
Isane— shy smiles, neatly folding sheets and laundry, the smell of antiseptic, the hands of a healer, crying happy tears, gardenia flowers, collecting medicinal herbs, a strong knowledge of medicine, always carrying bandages, chamomile tea, gardening for fun, blue butterflies, open windows on a summer afternoon, a slow-moving ceiling fan, a soft-spoken voice, a graceful height, playing with one's own hair, always finishing work on time, short afternoon naps, a glass of fruit juice, secretly reading romance novels.
Momo— peach blossoms, a calm spring breeze, crackling fires, chamomile tea, the smell of freshly-baked cookies, baking desserts, always being organized, smiling to hide the pain, humming quietly to oneself, bread and peach jam, a shelf full of well-loved books, pure adoration, hands that tremble ever so slightly, reminiscing over the past, a quiet strength, thick wool mittens, fiery rage, april showers bring may flowers, always working hard, healing from the past, carefree laughter.

Birmingham 1998 Wrap Up

It's here! Modern Eurovision. Televoting! Voting drama! Fans in the audience! Dry ice and pyro! Vamping for two minutes on live TV while the winner gets changed! What a show, what a production. Even though the UK had already hit full snark when it came to Eurovision (as demonstrated by Ulrika), the BBC can still pull out all the stops when it comes to staging the event. Lots of lights, flags, intriguing postcards and an almost perfectly run show despite the anticipated technical meltdown. Bravo.
Italy had chosen a really interesting year to pull out of Eurovision - perhaps wisely waiting another 13 years to let all the changes settle down. The national finals are all over the place, but generally not of bad quality. It's a chance to try out new things and try to find a new formula. By the end of Eurovision 1998 what the formula might be is even more unclear, other than whatever Ireland had been doing in the mid 1990s - that wasn't it. In the end a brave internal selection won and gave Eurovision perhaps its most iconic winner up to that point.

It's the last time with an orchestra - much to the sadness of many. Showing the way things were going seven countries didn't use the orchestra at all in 1998, with two of those sending conductors anyway! There were some heated disputes behind the scenes with some delegations threatening last minute withdrawals, but these were ironed out. On the night you couldn't see the chaos that had been going on with the exception of Dana International's div-a-ttitude prior to receiving the trophy.
It's the first time with the on-screen watermark through each performance for the benefit of televoters across Europe. Who's performing? It's there on screen, even if you missed the postcard and title card at the start. Plus a full recap in performance order before the interval.

Was it a classic in terms of the songs? Well no. That's to be expected during a time of great upheaval. There's still the temptation to stick to what is know rather than take risks. And for those that did take risks, well they didn't always come off. The 2022 ESC Radio/songfestival.be had only six 1998 songs in the top 500 and none of those are in the top 100. One of those (Eu Cred) appears to be have made it into the top 500 as part of a campaign. It previously had only been 1305th. The glory years of the 1990s were past now and the brave new world of popularity and commercialisation were ahead.
The big question was could Israel, the IBA and Jerusalem build on the promising start provided in Birmingham. Where is this whole thing going..?

ADIVINACIÓN EN DELFOS

La tradición oral y la literatura griega transmiten numerosas respuestas oraculares dadas por la Pitia de Delfos. Por ejemplo, es muy conocida la que cuenta Platón en Apología de Sócrates (21a), cuando Queréfano pregunta a la Pitia si existe algún hombre más sabio que Sócrates y esta contesta que no hay nadie más sabio que Sócrates. El oráculo de Delfos, cuyos orígenes se remontan a finales del s. IX a.C., se acabó convirtiendo en el oráculo más importante del mundo griego. Situado en la región de Fócida, en el centro del mundo griego, el santuario est�� dedicado al culto de Apolo y, precisamente, está cerca del monte Parnaso, donde la mitología griega ubica el hogar de las Musas, compañeras habituales de este dios. El elemento más importante del oráculo era la Pitia o Pitonisa, una mujer que se mantenía virgen y que era la encargada de manifestar el oráculo que recibía de la divinidad. Pero, ¿cómo se llevaba a cabo la adivinación oracular?

Las consultas al oráculo las hacían tanto las poleis como los individuos particulares, y las respuestas que se ofrecían jugaban un papel esencial en cuestiones tan relevantes como la fundación de colonias o la prestación de ayuda militar. La consulta se hacía en el adyton, la sala que sucede a la nave central de un templo griego. En el adyton del templo de Apolo se encontraban el ónfalo, que señalaba el centro del mundo, y un árbol de laurel, símbolo de este dios. Para obtener respuesta, el que preguntaba debía pagar una especie de peaje conocido como pelanos, que en un primer momento consistía en el ofrecimiento de una torta de sacrificio, de donde toma su nombre este peaje, para luego ser ya una contribución monetaria.

El proceso de consulta tenía varias partes. Primero, en un altar situado fuera del templo se ofrecía un sacrificio preliminar y luego se pasaba al interior del templo, donde se hacía otro sacrificio, depositando partes del animal en la trapeza o mesa de ofrendas situada en la entrada del adyton. Una vez realizados estos sacrificios, la persona que iba a consultar al oráculo era conducida por los intérpretes del oráculo a un espacio donde no podía ver a la Pitia, la cual, dentro del adyton, quemaba hojas de laurel y harina de cebada en el altar (hestia). Después, coronada con laurel, se sentaba en un trípode, entraba en trance y, poseída por el dios, emitía la profecía del oráculo por inspiración divina. Una vez que se expresaba el oráculo, los intérpretes (prophetai) eran los encargados de dar sentido y coherencia a las visiones fragmentarias que había anunciado la Pitia.
Así pues, el santuario de Delfos tuvo una importancia muy destacada no solo dentro del mundo griego, sino que también gozó de gran fama en reinos adyacentes como el de Lidia, en Anatolia. Heródoto (I, 53) nos cuenta que Creso, el rey de Lidia, preguntó al oráculo si podía hacer una expedición contra los persas y que la Pitia respondió que, si lo hacía, destruiría un gran imperio. Esta historia ejemplifica la ambigüedad de las respuestas oraculares dadas en Delfos y la necesidad de interpretarlas correctamente, pues las acciones de Creso sí que pusieron fin a un gran imperio, pero no al persa, sino al lidio.

  "Es imposible equivocarse dándole al violonchelo una melodía bella y cantarina", dice HAUSER sobre su nuevo álbum. "¡Siempre hay muchas posibilidades de que suene incluso mejor que el original!"   En Classic II, que él mismo produjo, HAUSER se reúne con sus colaboradores creativos de Classic: el arreglista Robin Smith, Ziegler y la Orquesta Sinfónica de Londres. Con Smith, reinventó sus melodías favoritas con nuevos y elegantes arreglos para el violonchelo solista, quizá el más "vocal" de todos los instrumentos orquestales. Las melodías que eligió se escribieron originalmente para voz, piano, oboe o -en varios casos- orquestas sinfónicas enteras, desde la época barroca hasta nuestros días. El objetivo era hacer que estas melodías "cantaran" de nuevo en el violonchelo.   "Es un gran placer para mí", dice HAUSER, que define Classic II y Classic como sus "álbumes soñados". "Es lo que más disfruto en realidad: cuando vuelvo a mis raíces, al repertorio clásico. Cuando era pequeño, mi sueño era este: tocar con una orquesta increíble, en un buen estudio, con un buen violonchelo. Estas melodías son algunos de mis primeros recuerdos, cuando me enamoré de la música. Para mí es algo natural".   Classic II incluye dos melodías que cambiaron la vida de HAUSER.   El violonchelista escuchó por primera vez la luminosa "Canción de la Luna" de la ópera de Antonín Dvořák Rusalka cuando, siendo un jovencísimo estudiante de violonchelo en Londres, HAUSER fue elegido para tocar en una orquesta que acompañaba a la soprano Renée Fleming en el aria de una representación en el Palacio de Buckingham para el Príncipe Carlos. La música en sí impulsó tanto a HAUSER que la transcribió para sí mismo - "un momento crucial en mi vida", dice, que le enseñó cómo podía "cantar" el violonchelo.   Años más tarde, antes de que HAUSER lanzara su carrera como mitad de 2CELLOS, la conmovedora elegancia barroca del "Adagio" de Albinoni le sirvió de inspiración para adaptar la pieza como solo de violonchelo e interpretarla en un vídeo que él mismo montó. Lo publicó en YouTube, sin imaginar que iba a ser un gran fenómeno, consiguiendo unos 91 millones de visitas. En Classic II, se han recreado ambas obras para aprovechar la madurez artística de HAUSER y el suntuoso sonido de la Orquesta Sinfónica de Londres.   Cuando HAUSER publicó Classic a principios de 2020 -antes de la pandemia de COVID y del inicio de las turbulencias políticas mundiales-, el violonchelista dijo de la música: "Esto es lo que el mundo necesita". Sobre Classic II, afirma lo mismo y añade: "El mundo necesita esta música ahora, más que nunca".

Kalaunan, unti-unting nagkaroon siya ng kaalaman ukol sa negosyo; nakipagtulungan sa mga bihasang bordadoras ng Lumban; at, nagsimulang gumawa ng kanyang sariling mga materyales.  Sa paglipas ng panahon, napatunayan na napakahalaga ang konsepto ng partnerships upang yumabong ang kanyang negosyo. Importanteng alalahanin na, sa realidad, pinoprotektahan ng mga istandard na iniimpluwensyahan ng media ang mga tao sa madalas na nakakatakot at masakit na mundo ng pag-ibig. Sa lipunan natin ngayon, hindi naman bawal na magkaroon ng istandards at maghingi ng pagsikap sa sinisinta, yun nga lang, dapat tanggapin din natin na mahirap makahanap ng taong perpektong makakapasok sa mga istriktong istandard. Maaring maging dahilan ang lahat ng mga ekspektasyong ito, kung masasabing nagiging obsesyon na, na hindi natin makita ang ating iniibig bilang isang tao o maging dahilan na masira ang relasyon dahil sa sobrang pagiging di-realistiko sa ating hinihingi sa ating minamahal. 
Para sa mga ‘hopeless romantics,’ pati naman din sa mga media consumers, o tayong lahat: maraming makukuha sa pagmuni-muni ng persona, lalo na ang kanyang pag-amin sa kanyang obsesiyon. Masasabing maganda din na alam niya ang kaniyang gusto mula sa iba at kinikilala niya ang pinaggalingan ng kaniyang di-realistiko na larawan ng pag-ibig. Sa ibang salita, kilala niya ang sarili niya, na isang kalidad na mahalaga sa isang masaya na relasyon. Alam niya rin kung ano ang mahalaga para sa sarili niya- ang kaniyang persepsyon sa pag-ibig, at tama naman din na alahanin niya ang tunay na gusto kaysa idaan sa kompromiso at mainis siya na hindi nasusunod ang kaniyang pantasiya. Masasabi rin na hindi ikinabubuti ang pagkulong niya sa sarili na hindi subukang maranas ang hindi pumapasok sa istandard ng minimithing mala-pelikula na pagmamahalan, ngungit desisyon niya iyon na hindi naman humahamak sa ibang tao. Maiisip din na kung makahanap man siya ng taong gusto niyang subukang mahalin, dapat din magkaroon ng maayos na komunikasyon tungkol sa mga ekspektasyong ito dahil tao lang din ang bawat isa sa atin na hindi alam ang lahat at nag-iiba ang ating mga gusto.
Maaring pag-isipan ang ‘Like the Movies’ bilang isang kanta na nagpapalibot sa di-realistiko na ekspektasyon tungkol sa pag-ibig dulot ng pinapakita na depiksyon sa popular na media. Sa kanta, tinatanggap ng persona ang katotohanan na lubos na importante ang konseptong ito para sa kanya at nagiging hadlang na ang ito sa pagkaranas niya ng ‘ordinaryong’ pagmamahal. Sa huli, masasabing relatable ang inilarawan na persona, kung saan sinasalamin niya ang penomena ng pag-epekto ng media sa ating persepsyon sa pag-ibig, at, ang ating mga buhay.
