“ My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined. ”
mixed bag sentence starters || accepting
"Your day is ruined?!" And things were going so well until... well... he wasn't even sure what happened exactly. There was a lot of blinding light and suddenly he wasn't in Gotham anymore.
Erica Coe, Black Spider-- was a hitman the Bat had been tailing for a while now. And finally he'd just had her on the ropes before they somehow ended up here. Wherever here was.
Terry had apparently been mistaken for the bad guy in this situation, since out of nowhere he'd been attacked by this stranger in a different spider costume.
Unfortunately for him, Coe decided to attack her rescuer when he came to release her from Batman's restraints. Now she had created some distance between them-- and her wrist mounted weapons were automatically trained on the two of them. Considering she had like six arms, and a weapon on each one, this wasn't going to be easy.
"I nearly caught her before you showed up!"
He wasn't about to give up, but Batman was worn down from the first part of his fight with the hired assassin. And his com-link was no longer working as far as he could tell. So it was just him, Black Spider, and the other Spider. There was no telling who's side the latter was on either.

Augmented Opera
Penned By Joseph M. And Yvarg (Discord)
Special thanks to Yvarg (Discord) for letting me use his goat character Rathos.
Prelude
Birthed from four worlds: the worlds of Terra Centum, Terra Nonum, Terra Unum and Terra Duo was a new world. The new and the great from everything, merged into one.
There were aspects from the terras Unum, Duo and Nonum, such as the world’s hundreds of countries. But on a very large new continent were new Res Publicas, new places to explore.
There was greatness, but also mystery. Characters from old and new, a strange anomaly to be found out. Many characters from many worlds, inspired by each others’ sense of justice, put aside their differences to seek out the truth, whatever the cost.
Canto I: Havoc In Rivalo
Destiny shot through the air, an emerald confusion shattering the sound barrier, his sword a lethal bullet. Bat-Jesus leapt from the rooftops of Rivalo, hurtling down and tackling someone. Makael zipped after Destiny, whistling through the streets and gliding upwards in golden chaos.
Elias raced through the crowded streets, a monster chasing him, one of muscular and terrifying proportions. It was Satanzilla, the devil himself rising straight from Hell to wreak havoc and snatch souls, the demon risen from the depths to cause chaos. Elias pocketed his sword and spun, claws spiking out from his fingers, an aqua pelt covering his body.
Bat-Jesus swung through the air, whipping out his Holy Batarangs and flinging them at Satanzilla, tiny things they were, the size of the pointed needle-ends on a thumbtacks compared to Satanzilla, but they caught the devil monster off guard.
Michael, Joseph’s friend, leapt into the fight with a spear, stabbing Satanzilla in the eye and giving a heroic, heart-pounding victory screech.
Tiger Jesus pounced in, ripping apart Satanzilla’s toenail until it was nothing but withered bone with gnaws and claw marks all over. His fangs dug into Satanzilla’s toe like a set of jagged vices, his eyes filled with the Holy Spirit of the Forest.
Army Man Jesus marched in, wielding an assault rifle, bullets spitting everywhere.
Guy Red–this incarnation whose name was Rasheb Nevim, and whose story was a combination of the Terra Unum’s Rasheb Nevim and Terra Duo’s Petra Red–roared into the battlefield atop Jesus Duponi, a unicorn Jesus with long rainbow-colored hair drifting down his face, almost covering his horse snout.
Then Djorrhan Djorrhar–known as Dee-Dee or Joran in Terra Unum, whose choices in life and experiences were a combination of Jairan from Terra Duo and Joran from Terra Unum–marched into battle alongside an army of Jesuses against Satanzilla, all of the Jesuses carrying rocket launchers, wearing black shades and camo military uniforms. There was even Spy Jesus in a suit and a Jesus made of unadulterated steel.
Satanzilla fell to a shirtless goat. Things were just getting started.
Canto II: Beach Episode
Elias walked shirtless on the beaches of Miami, Florida. Swooning, people from all walks of life. Zacchias walked alongside him, fully clothed, but still people swooned.
Getting used to this new world, Elias walked up to an ice cream vendor and asked, “May I have one ice cream?”
The ice cream vendor nodded, and pulled out an ice cream scooper, the scooping mechanism resembling that of an asumium spoon. Elias hadn’t seen it in action, and he assumed it to be a weapon.
Elias drew his sword and sliced the ice cream scooper in half, the handle still in the vendor’s hand and the scooping bit gathering sand below Elias’ regal shoes, a pristine leather smooth enough to gently drift away the coarse sand and prevent any debris from gathering in its creases.
Furious, he was about to plunge the blade into the vendor, but a draped hand stopped him: Zacchias. And, the ice cream vendor drew his own sword, and the two sparred there and then.
Their blades met, embers of orange and yellow, sparks of bright light, Rasheb and Joran racing across the ocean-washed dunes to stop the fighting. The ice cream vendor revealed himself as the Philippines’ mafia boss Mang Gremblin, a man whom Joran and Rasheb had been fighting against for years.
Rasheb cried, “Don’t do this! Stop!”
Joran held him back, saying, “Just let them fight. It’s too late.”
“We need to stop them both! We need to arrest Don Grembin!”
“Maybe Joseph can do it for us!” Rasheb looked at Joran with a confused face, but he knew Joran was right. Joseph was a skilled fighter in many regards, a master of Tae-Kwon-Do, a black belt in karate, the tamer of eskrima fighters, the wielder of kali sticks, a skilled tactician and a guerilla combatant.
Don Gremblin spat at Joseph’s face. “You’re done, Joseph!” he cried. “I caused this mess! I did!” Suddenly, the police showed up and shut everything down, sirens wailing, beachgoers fleeing.
Canto III: Realization
Makael slammed the files on the table, startling Mang Gremblin out of a hazy nap, his body nestled neatly and cozily into the plastic armchair. His gold wings spread out, the detectives backed against the wall, his eyes piercing the don’s soul. “What did you do?!”
Don Gremblin, wearing a black trench coat, tattered black tank top and pants, had nothing to say but a stammer of incoherence. “There’s multiple Jesuses now, detective! Don’t you like that?”
Makael actually did think about it for a moment, but returned to badgering the manong. He slapped the don in the face, drawing his silver rapier slowly from its scabbard, the resting place that almost taunted Mang Gremblin, almost saying that if the manong misspoke the archangel would have no hesitation about punishing any mistruths.
Makael had him against his seat, almost knocking him over until Destiny and Hekezel walked in.
Destiny grabbed Mang Gremblin by his collar and raised him up to her level, shouting, “Speak, motherfucker!” Destiny moved her claw to Mang Gremblin’s forehead, threatening to plunge it in and crush his skull like it was a PB&J.
This caused the mang to fess up. “I–I wanted to take the best parts of all realities and put ‘em together! That’s all–I swear!”
Hekezel shook her purple-fuzzed head, her furry ears swinging back and forth.
Destiny and Hekezel whipped out two pistols, fuzzy metal cylinders in the mang’s nauseated eyes, cold barrels pointed at his chest by fleece-covered women standing at a distance, the bright, glaring ceiling lamp slowly burning the hairs on his back as they stood–and finally, an archangel behind them: simply waiting.
BANG.
BANG.
The three of them left the interrogation room, covered in blood, the consumer of worlds drenched in his own blood, the fluids pumping through his veins that fueled the creation of this madness.
Just how they would live in this new terra–Terra Infinitum–nobody with the memories of worlds past knew.
Epilude
Worlds combined, the kingdoms of Terra Centum now crammed onto a continent titled Barima, named after the major Res Publicas of Balavalar, Rivalo and Mastima.
The mysterious goat and Michael (last name Spear) of Terra Nonum develop a relationship.
Everything, together, acts as if everything else never existed, and life returns to normal… somewhat.
There are changes–Perceptive Distortion merges with another company and becomes Joint Sciences Incorporated, amongst other things.

He was like a second father to me.
June 3, 2022
We lost Deb's Dad, my father-in-law, on Memorial Day. He was in his mid 50s when I first met him, but he seemed much younger. Oh, he looked younger, for sure, even until the day he died. But he thought younger, too. That was the thing about him, for me. "Razz," was the rare type of individual who, as F. Scott Fitzgerald once said, could "...hold two opposed ideas in his mind at the same time, and still function." It led to the countless heartfelt conversations we had over the countless cheap beers we drank together. I wrote his obituary:
Edward C. Rensi
Ninety-six-year-old World War II veteran and longtime Monroe County resident Edward C. Rensi died on Memorial Day at The Arbors in Woodsfield from cardiac arrest.
Commonly known by his nickname, “Razz,” given to him during early childhood by his father, Ed was born on December 7, 1925, in Parlett, Ohio to Andrew E. and Edith (Visintainer) Rensi. Raised in Wintersville, he loved to hunt, fish and play baseball as a young boy. Ed graduated from Wintersville High School and played saxophone in the school’s marching band. After returning from his tour of duty with the Navy in World War ll, he married Alberta Bossick of Hopedale in 1950. During their young adult years, Ed and “Bert” moved to Bloomingdale and began raising their three children. During that time he worked in supply for North American Coal Corp. In 1965, he was transferred to Powhatan Point as a purchasing agent and moved his young family to Woodsfield. He concluded his career at the supply office there and retired from the company in 1985.
A member of the Greatest Generation, Ed enlisted in the U.S. Navy at age 18. He was assigned duty on the USS California and was a crew member when the ship was hit by a Japanese kamikaze during the invasion of Lingayen Gulf in January 1945. Forty-four of his fellow shipmen were killed and another 155 were injured.
Ed was interviewed about his war experiences for the Grand Valley State University Veterans Project. His recollections of the war in the Pacific Theater can be viewed on YouTube. (Enter GVSU Veterans History Project—Edward Rensi.)
When he returned home from the war he worked a variety of jobs—from butcher to coal truck driver to railroad worker. He then moved to Lincoln Park, Michigan where he lived with relatives and found employment at the Dodge Main, a massive auto assembly plant in Hamtramck.
But ever the “country boy,” young Ed returned to the hills of Southeast Ohio a year later. One day at an ice cream shop he met a pretty girl, Alberta Bossick of Hopedale, and politely asked for a lick of her cone. That lick would lead to 72 years of marriage and three children.
During his six decades in Woodsfield, Ed fished many of the small ponds in Monroe County in pursuit of the bluegills he loved—pan fried in a beer batter. He was also a small game hunter—mostly squirrels and rabbits. For many years he cut and split wood to heat the home that he and Bert renovated.
During the spring and summer he loved nothing more than to watch his beloved Cleveland Indians (Guardians), rarely missing a game on television. He also had passions for boxing and football, whether it was played by the Noles, Buckeyes or Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. Also, he reveled in the fact that he and Bert were able to spend the last 28 winters of his life in Fort Myers, Florida.
His greatest love, however, were his grandchildren and great grandchildren who he taught many things: his lexicon of secret words (“goomis,” “twiddler,” “skeef,” etc.); how to bait a line; how to bat a ball; how to fillet a fish: and much, much more. He called the boys “renegades.” He called the girls “my little darlings.” They simply called him “Papa,” with a love and admiration that was obvious to all.
Some people measure greatness in terms of wealth. Some measure it in terms of education or achievement. The measure of Edward Rensi was the values that he carried around with him every day of his life—character, honesty and integrity. He was, by those measures, a truly great man.
Ed was predeceased by his brother Eugene and wife Doris. He is survived by his loving wife Alberta; son Terry (Jane); daughter Debbie Bokuniewicz (Len); daughter Becky Ricer (Mike); grandchildren Leslie Fife (B.J.), Andrew Rensi (Maryn), Nick Bokuniewicz, Gordon Bokuniewicz, Erika Board, Erin DeAngelis (Jimmy), Lindsay Barnhart (Brian); great grandchildren Lennon, Lydia and Robert Fife; Beau Barnhart; two soon-to-be born baby girls; as well as many nieces, nephews and dear friends.
A memorial service, including Mass at St. Sylvester church, is scheduled for June 11 at 11:00 a.m. There will not be a viewing. Details can be found at wattersfuneralhome.com In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Cancer Gas Card Program or St. Sylvester School.

picking up v (suitor...s enter!)
Hey, hey hey!! So, here’s the latest installment of the picking up! verse! You can read the other “chapters” here.
In which Kakashi meets the other suitors.
part i - part ii - part iii - part iv
“I’m sorry about that.” Sakura apologized, settling the wine glass down. They’ve barely made it to their reservation, with the stare off that happened between Kakashi and Tobirama back at the lobby.
The two silver-haired (foxes) men kept their composure with small (non-existent) small talk, gauging each other. Sakura believed that the only thing that stopped them from going all caveman was the fact that they knew she hated it.
She was not a prize, damn it.
Good thing they knocked it off and Kakashi and Sakura went on their way. The restaurant they chose limited their capacity to provide a sense of privacy and exclusivity to their diners. Their table sat by the window, inside a small function room.
They just finished their main courses when Kakashi waved her off, “Don’t apologize. I didn’t know you were so popular, but I can’t say I’m surprised.”
Sakura’s smile strained, thinking of all the male guests in the wedding entourage. From what she heard, Pein will be there. That’s an entire headache right there and oh if only he knew.
“Ah, well. Tobirama’s an old patient. He got shot by one of his client’s enemies after court.”
“Hmm,” Kakashi hummed, “I think I read about that in the newspaper. The Shimura case?”
“Yes —“
“Excuse me, here are your desserts.”
The waiter laid out a souffle for Sakura and a plain vanilla ice cream for Kakashi - which Sakura just found completely adorable.
Kakashi watched as Sakura’s eyes lit up at the first taste of the chocolate souffle, her cheeks flushing with delight. He could watch her eat forever. He’ll give her all the souffle she wants, if she asks for it.
Their conversation picked up, rounding with the details of the infamous Shimura case, and how it shook their nation. With the not-so white elephant in the room, Kakashi decided it’s time to bat it away.
Half-jokingly he asked; “So… are there any other suitors I should know about?”
The Uchiha family for all its riches is a subtle one when it comes to throwing parties. Which is the opposite of the Hyuuga clan. Glancing at the grand displays of 7 foot flower arrangements and number of tables for the pre-wedding party, Sakura guessed it was Hanabi’s family that won out when it came to decorations.
The wedding was tomorrow, this party, according to the invitation, was to allow the two families to get to know each other. Or, looking at the amount of passive-aggressive bragging, to one-up each other one way or another.
With the Hyuugas in politics and the Uchiha in the police force, Hanabi and Sasuke’s marriage seems like a political alliance to the untrained eye. But as Sakura sat waiting for Kakashi to return from the restroom, she could see the couple’s eyes soften at the sight of each other at their own table of honor.
It’s about love - and politics. Not the other way around.
“Please don’t tell me you’re not pining for your ex-husband at his own wedding party.”
Sighing, Sakura rolled her eyes at the droll voice from behind her. From her periphery, a red-head moved and sat across her - Akasuna no Sasori.
“Why are you here?” Sakura’s eyes narrowed at Sasori, “You hate Sasuke.”
Sasori shrugged, his indolence marking his movements. “It doesn’t change the fact that his father invested in our hospital.”
Ah, of course it doesn’t.
It’s love, politics and money - what a trifecta.
For a moment, it was silent between the rivals. They’d met at medical school, both studying under the heavy hands of Senju Tsunade and Akasuna no Chiyo. Sasori had been her senior for a year, before their tense rivarly started when Sakura dismantled his thesis paragraph by paragraph, making them graduate at the same time.
Their rivalry’s legendary. Rumor has it Tsunade and Chiyo still had a bet going on about when Sasori will confess his begrudging respect and hate-love for their favorite student - not that Sakura knew that.
“So should I keep my eyes peeled for a dramatic entrance of a scorned ex-wife tomorrow? Let me know, I’ve got to get my camera ready.”
Sakura’s eyebrow twitched, “I’ll peel your eyes for you if you don’t leave me alone.”
Sasori’s lips twitched upwards, satisfied with poking fun. “And here I was keeping you com—“
“Ah, Sasori-san, I didn’t know you were here!”
The Uchiha Matriarch, mother, or was it back to Mikoto-san now? was a lifesaver. Looking every bit of a matriarch with her pearls and beautiful dark blue dress, Mikoto still held an effortless elegance about her.
Sakura’s lips twitched at Sasori’s deflated expression, quickly masked with impassive politeness. He rose and kissed the matriarch’s hand. “I wouldn’t miss your son’s second wedding for the wedding, Mikoto-san.”
Mikoto took the insult in stride. Sasuke’s first marriage didn’t have a wedding - not of this magnitude of course. Given all the… circumstances surrounding it. The matriarch glanced at her former daughter-in-law, now shooting her a relieved smile.
What a pity she had to leave the family. Mikoto mused. Sakura-chan’s a great woman, smart as a whip with a backbone of steel - perfect for the Uchiha. With a glance around the ballroom, Mikoto could already tell the line of men wanting to steal her away, starting with this doctor. She also saw Congressman Uzumaki (yakuza, if she remembered correctly) lurking about and that lawyer Tobirama.
Mikoto smiled a practiced smile at Sasori, before placing her hand on the crook of his elbow, talking about the new technology Suna hospital has because of their investment -
They want her daughter-in-law?
They could try.
Hand-washing was one of the habits (or coping mechanisms) his former occupation left on Kakashi. Counting backwards from 100, he meticulously scrubbed his hands on the sink. From the cubicle behind him, a familiar figure emerged.
“I see that you lost the face piercings - good look. Must be a hit with the voters.”
Pein knew Kakashi, perhaps even knew what he was before he was a high school teacher (and even during that), and it really shouldn’t surprise Kakashi that he was here. A political gathering disguising as a pre-wedding banquet.
“And you lost the mask - you’re almost unrecognizable.” Pein said, standing next to Kakashi and turning on the sink - drowning out their conversation.
Kakashi picked off a few tissues and dried his hands, his customized face mask sitting snugly on his face. “Heh, it was going out of fashion. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a date to attend to.”
“Does she know?”
Kakashi paused, his back facing the legislator. Slowly, he turned and faced the impassive face of the shadow leader of one of the oldest Yakuza families in Ame. “That’s none of your business.”
“I knew you prefer older men.”
Sighing, Sakura turned to Shisui and shrugged off his arm from her bare shoulders. “Hello to you too, Shisui. I’m assuming you’re the one who sent her?” Emerald eyes pointedly looked at the lady Kakashi’s politely twirling.
He’d gotten back right as the meals were served and was promptly whisked away by an overenthusiastic lady with a penchant for pointing out their age differences.
Shisui shot her a grin before bowing in front of her with flourish, offering his hand for a dance, knowing that propriety dictates that she can not refuse.
Soon, her soft hand slid into his and he whisked her away for a dance. As they sway back and forth to the orchestra, Shisui lowered his lips to her ear. “You’d be surprised who’s more devious between Itachi and I, Sakura-chan.”
Sakura’s eyes narrowed, roaming the room over Shisui’s shoulder. She found Itachi near the grand staircase, already looking at her with molten eyes.
“You two are persistent.”
Shisui laughed, leaning back an inch. “We prefer, determined. If you don’t mind.”
Sakura sighed, swaying in his arms, “You do know it’s odd if I get married to someone in your family again, right? Let alone my ex-husband’s brother or cousin.”
Shisui’s chuckle reverberated against Sakura’s chest, his lips grazing her ear. “Darling, once part of the family - always part of the family.”
“What are you doing?” Sasuke asked, eyebrow raised and arms crossed.
Finally, Sakura had thrown in the towel and bowed out of the reception with a goodbye and a hug with the newly-weds. She had whispered in Sasuke’s ears a request to keep his relatives away from her.
“You still love her?” Shisui asked, daringly, eyes sharp. They were in Sasuke’s room, lounging, some sort of last bachelor’s party with wine and business plans.
“Of course.” Sasuke answered with not a beat missed.
Theirs was a history too long and too sweet to be brushed away. They may have ended but the bitterness of that ending was nothing compared to what they’ve been through. They grew together, loved together, had a beautiful girl together. How could he not love her?
Shisui watched as his cousin’s eyes glazed over, looking inwards, his body language softening before hardening as his coal eyes narrowed.
Itachi stared at his brother as if seeing him for the first time. It seemed they’d underestimated Sasuke’s loyalty. “We’ll take care of her, otouto, you know that.”
“I’ll always love her.” Sasuke reiterated, pointedly ignoring his older brother. He poured himself a glass of wine, remembering how Sakura looked up to Kakashi when they left the banquet. “Which means if any of you fucks up Sakura’s happiness, there will be hell to pay.”
When they arrived in Kakashi’s room, Sakura spilled out all the “suitors” who suddenly emerged after her divorce. Kakashi was pretty sure they’ve always been around, but he kept that to himself.
A doctor, nay, an owner of one of the biggest hospitals in the country - Akasuna no Sasori. Championed by many in their field, saying that he and Sakura are the next power couple of the field.
A lawyer, nay, one of the best criminal lawyers and co-owner of the Senju Co law firm - Tobirama Senju. The contender of the whole Senju family, including Tsunade (who had no apologies to give to Kakashi, she wanted Sakura as her official relative - sorry)
A legislator and a yakuza head - Uzumaki Nagato. Or Pein. Who was frankly just a pain in the ass to deal with. Kakashi still had some scars to prove that.
And of course, the Uchiha cousins. Championed by their whole clan, judging by the way the matriarch and patriarch approvingly gazed at them while they whisk Sakura for a dance.
And then there’s Kakashi.
“I’m just a humble soon-to-be college teacher,” Kakashi started and Sakura almost rolled her eyes thinking that there’s nothing humble about a retired military man who may or may not still be covertly working for the government and instead let Kakashi continue.
“Are you sure you’re fine with me?” he asked. And though he said it with humor laced in his voice, there’s a hint of truth.
Sakura’s heart clenched painfully, and she took Kakashi’s hands. “Are you okay with me? I’m dragging you from your peaceful life and well, into this.”
“Can’t say it’s not gonna be interesting.”
Sakura laughed, leaning against Kakashi. In turn, he wrapped his arm around his shoulder and smothered his laughter against her hair.
(He’ll have to make some calls. Get the Hatake estates and businesses up and running. He’s not just. And maybe he didn’t have a yakuza family or a corporation, but he had Sakura- and the only approval he’ll ever need - Sarada’s.)

Mister Mind came to Earth during World War II, drawn by its radio broadcasts; he especially loved Edgar Bergen's dummy Charlie McCarthy. Upon learning that his beloved Charlie was not real, he decided to conquer the world instead. To this end, he formed the first Monster Society of Evil, which was merely a shadow of what was to come. He gathered known villains like Dummy, Mister Who, Nyola, Oom the Mighty, and Ramulus to make up the Monster Society of Evil. They succeeded in capturing Hawkgirl. Not long after its founding, the other villains tried to kill him and Mister Mind retreated to Earth-S. Without his leadership, the team was quickly defeated in battle by the All-Star Squadron.[7]
Captain Marvel Adventures: "The Monster Society of Evil" (Earth-S)Edit
As a side-effect of the reality-altering Crisis on Infinite Earths, Mister Mind arrived in the universe of Earth-S (where Fawcett's former characters dwelled) sometime around 1846 (it was mentioned in this story that he had been working on a weapon for 97 years). His brilliant intellect, telepathic powers, and ruthlessness allowed him to conquer much of space, establishing bases on many different worlds as well as varied locations on Earth. He recruited supervillains, armies, and entire alien species to aid him in his attempt to conquer the Earth, and first relayed his information from the planetoid Punkus via radio. He began his reign of terror on Earth in 1943, boasting that he and the Monster Society of Evil would give Captain Marvel "nightmares from now on". This formed the basis of the plot for "The Monster Society of Evil" serial in Captain Marvel Adventures #22–46 (March 1943 to May 1945). Mind was not revealed as a worm until Captain Marvel Adventures #26.
Mind had many and varied plans to conquer Earth, and to destroy Captain Marvel and/or his teenaged alter-ego, Billy Batson. But Captain Marvel stopped all of Mind's plans, dismantled all of his resources, and arrested, frightened away, or accidentally killed all of his henchmen. Reverse cliffhangers were used in the Monster Society stories, such as Mister Mind about to be crushed under a careless heel or about to be crushed in a paper roller. Finally, a desperate Mister Mind attacked Captain Marvel's alter ego Billy Batson with ether and left him unconscious. But he then realized that without his henchmen, he was practically helpless and unable to kill him. Captain Marvel soon captured the world's wickedest worm and had him tried and executed for killing 186,744 people.
Shazam!: Return of the SocietyEdit
Shazam! #2 was Mister Mind's first appearance in a DC comic, and depicted his return to villainy. Although he had been sentenced to death in the electric chair, Mister Mind's alien physiology proved resistant to the high voltage, and he entered a state of suspended animation that was mistaken for death. On the verge of being stuffed for display in a museum, he awakened, hypnotized the taxidermist into creating a duplicate, and escaped.
Shortly after Captain Marvel's own return from suspended animation, he countered Mister Mind trying to destroy the country with an expanding balloon-like weapon in St. Louis. With intelligence from a reformed Herkimer, Marvel succeeds in thwarting Mind's plan and capturing the worm.[8]
Several future issues of Shazam! depict Mister Mind attempting to recruit new henchmen and reform the Monster Society of Evil, at one point even recruiting a displaced Lex Luthor from Earth-One.[9] The Monster Society of Evil was briefly reformed in Shazam! #14 (September–October 1974).
An escaped Mister Mind, hungry for revenge, assembled a new, smaller group which included Doctor Sivana, his evil children Georgia and Sivana Jr, and Ibac. They attempted to attack the Marvel Family - Captain Marvel, Mary Marvel, and Captain Marvel Jr. - with a death ray that created "dream" monsters using first evil thoughts and later the nightmares of Uncle Marvel. The Marvels end up defeating the Monster Society by convincing Uncle Marvel to dream up "dream" versions of the Marvels to fight the monsters.
World's Finest Comics: The Monster Society Strikes BackEdit
Mister Mind reformed his Monster Society of Evil one last time in the classic continuity, in World's Finest Comics #264–267 (August–September 1980 to February–March 1981). Almost the entire Marvel Family had to unite in order to stop them—Captain Marvel, Mary Marvel, Captain Marvel Jr., and the three Lieutenant Marvels: Tall Marvel, Fat Marvel, and Hill Marvel. Their wicked plans were wide-ranging, beginning with an assault on Egypt, expanding to a scheme to reverse the entire Earth's topography, Oggar raising an evil army from the sands and dusts of Egypt for Black Adam to lead, and conquering hundreds of planets and using them to build an army of spaceships. Their plans culminated in a massive assault on the Rock of Eternity, home of the Marvels' benefactor, the wizard Shazam.
World's FunnestEdit
In the Elseworlds story Superman & Batman: World's Funnest (November 2000), the two near-omnipotent imps Mister Mxyzptlk and Bat-Mite engage in a tremendous duel that destroys many planes of reality. One of these appears to be a version of Earth-S. During their time there, they run into a version of the Monster Society of Evil that is slightly different from any other, featuring many of Captain Marvel's enemies. Mxyzptlk easily destroys them (with a tentacled beast labeled Mr. Mxyzptlk's Anti-Social Monster) when they begin to annoy him, along with the rest of the universe; however, by the end of the book, all is returned to what it was.
Post-CrisisEdit
Shazam! A New BeginningEdit
Mister Mind's return to the DC Universe in wake of Crisis was first hinted at in Roy Thomas' Shazam! A New Beginning. It closed with a defeated Dr. Sivana hiding out and drinking tequila in a Mexican dive bar. He ponders how he will defeat Captain Marvel when he sees a worm in the bottle and has the idea of using it as a weapon against the hero.
Thomas' idea of Mister Mind being a mutated tequila worm was not followed up on and he was given a different origin in his next appearance.
The Power of Shazam!Edit
Mister Mind was fully re-introduced into the DC Universe in Jerry Ordway's The Power of Shazam! series in 1996. Mind was one of a race of millions of mind-controlling worms from the planet Venus, who had plans to invade and take over the Earth, which they claim to have once ruled around the Ice Age. Appointed as the go-ahead agent, Mind arrived on Earth during World War II, by means of an indestructible green Venusian space suit, but was captured by Bulletman, Starman, and Green Lantern Abin Sur before enacting his plan. Mind eventually escaped, stowing away on the Magellan space probe, and decades later forced Doctor Sivana to join forces with him, needing Sivana's scientific prowess to facilitate the Venusian worms' plans. He took control of the wealthy Sinclair Batson in order to finance those plans.
The worms' plans to invade the Earth were thwarted by Captain Marvel and Mary Marvel, who succeeded in killing all of the worms by sending them into deep space where they froze, save for Mister Mind, whom they placed in the custody of Sergeant Steel and the Department of Metahuman Affairs. Mind eventually escapes, takes over Steel's mind, and programs the robot Mister Atom, another Marvel Family villain in Steel's custody, to destroy the town of Fairfield, where Billy Batson (Captain Marvel) and Mary Bromfield (Mary Marvel) lived with their adopted parents. After Mister Atom's nuclear blast destroys the city and kills nearly all of its residents, the Marvels arrive in Washington, DC seeking revenge. Mister Mind's plot to set off a nuclear holocaust included using clones of himself to take over the minds of several regular American citizens, who were to make their ways to nuclear bomb facilities and initiate a nuclear holocaust. However, Mind's plan was foiled by the Marvel Family and Green Lanterns Kyle Rayner and Hal Jordan.
52Edit
Mister Mind played an integral role in DC's year-long 2006-2007 weekly comic, 52, although the importance of his role in the series was revealed gradually over time and involved the concepts of time travel and temporal paradoxes.
The day following the end of the Infinite Crisis event, Dr. Sivana discovers Mister Mind lying in a crater in the desert and pockets him, sealing him in a specimen jar and taking it back to his laboratory to prevent him from interfering with his plans to take over the world.[10] Sivana bombards Mind with particles of Suspendium, a time-altering element introduced in the 1970s Shazam! title. Although Sivana is then kidnapped by Intergang and forced to join their Science Squad, the Suspendium induces Mister Mind's delayed metamorphosis. As Sivana is dragged off, Mind observes a televised memorial for the heroes lost in the Infinite Crisis, and takes particular note of Skeets, the robotic companion of the time-traveling superhero Booster Gold.[11] With his metamorphosis beginning, Mind proceeds to weave a cocoon around himself, which doubles as a matter transporter that he uses to beam himself inside Skeets in Dr. Magnus' lab,[12][13] intending to use the robot as a "cradle" where he can spend the following year gestating and completing his transformation.
Destroying Skeets from within, Mind adopts his identity and makes plans to consume the Multiverse, which had returned to existence as a result of Infinite Crisis. Discovering that Rip Hunter is aware of his plans, Mind, as Skeets, attempts to hunt him down and draw him out, to no avail. Eventually, he discovers Hunter hiding in the bottle city of Kandor, but when Hunter turns the Phantom Zone projector on him, Mind overpowers it and "eats" the Phantom Zone itself. At the end of the year, Mind tracks Hunter and Booster down to the lab of T. O. Morrow, intent on acquiring the head of the Red Tornado, whose computerized brain has mapped the Multiverse.[14] There, Mind's gestation completes and he emerges from within Skeets in a monstrous imago form known as a "Hyperfly". Now, instead of feeding on the brainwaves of individuals, he feeds on space-time itself and decides to devour the entire Multiverse.[15] Booster and Hunter flee back in time to the moment of the Multiverse's birth, with the now-gigantic Mind in pursuit, following them from universe to universe, all 52 of them, where he consumes portions of each world's history, altering their timelines and creating 52 new, distinct Earths.[16] Mind is lured back to Hunter's lab, where he shrinks in size and becomes trapped within Skeets' Suspendium-lined shell.[17] Booster hurls Mind backwards through time, where the Suspendium reverts Mind back to his larval form, and lands on the day after the end of Infinite Crisis, where he is found by Dr. Sivana and sealed in the jar. The remaining 52 seconds of time are used to bind him in a time loop.[18]
Also during the series, unrelated to Mind's activities, a new incarnation of the Monster Society was formed, consisting of the Four Horsemen of Apokolips, creatures engineered by Intergang's Science Squad (including Sivana). Of particular note is Sobek, a humanoid crocodile not unlike the beings who were members of the Pre-Crisis Monster Society. This Monster Society attacked the Black Marvel Family for not joining the Freedom of Power treaty, and killed Isis and Osiris, only to be destroyed by Black Adam, save for Death, who flees. In his hunt for Death, Black Adam destroys the nation of Bialya, before defeating the final Horseman, torturing it for information, and killing it.[19]
Shazam! The Monster Society of Evil (2007)Edit
A new Captain Marvel prestige format four-issue limited series from DC Comics, Shazam! The Monster Society of Evil, written and illustrated by Jeff Smith (creator of Bone) began publication on February 7, 2007. Smith's Shazam! miniseries, in the works since 2003, is a more traditional take on the character, returning Captain Marvel to his roots with a story set outside of the DC Universe. In this version, Mister Mind resembles a small snake, with a more threatening face sans glasses, while wearing a modern style communicator headset. Many different monsters are shown in the Society, with the Crocodile-Men being replaced with the Alligator-Men.
The New 52Edit
In September 2011, The New 52 rebooted DC's continuity. In this new timeline, Mister Mind makes his first appearance after Doctor Sivana's alliance with Black Adam fails. Sivana heads to the Rock of Eternity, where he cannot get in because of a magical shield. He cries out for someone to help him save his family, saying that while science has failed them, magic could save them. Sivana then discovers a caterpillar-like creature trapped in a bottle within the Rock. The creature claims that people call him "Mister Mind" and makes note that he and Doctor Sivana shall be the "best of friends".[20]
DC RebirthEdit
Mister Mind returns in the new Shazam! series during the "DC Rebirth," still in an alliance with Sivana. Residing inside of Sivana's ear, Mister Mind has Sivana go to a doctor's office in order to cut out the tongue of a "medicine man" as it is needed for a spell. It is revealed that Mister Mind's real name is Maxivermis Mind and is believed to have originated from the Wildlands, one of the seven realms in the Magiclands. Believed to originally be a simple bookworm, Mister Mind suffered abuse as a child and tried for years to break into the Library of Eternity. He eventually succeeded and after absorbing all the knowledge and power of countless spells, he returned to the Wildlands and took his revenge on those who he believed had wronged him. Achieving his revenge, he set his sights on the Council of Eternity. He managed to work his way inside the Council and it took the combined might of Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, Mercury, and ! to contain Mister Mind, but he was able to cause the death of Solomon. Mind's goal is to consume and control all the power of the Magiclands.[21]
Mister Mind and Doctor Sivana plan to head to the Monsterlands in order to build the Monster Society of Evil from its inhabitants. As King Kid fights the Shazam Family in Philadelphia, Doctor Sivana and Mister Mind are directed to a boat by Dummy who cannot accompany them since he cannot deal with water. When they arrive at the Dungeon of Eternity, Mister Mind states that the inmates of the Dungeon of Eternity were gathered from all over the Magiclands and imprisoned for challenging the Council of Wizards. In addition, Mister Mind stated that the Monsterlands used to be called the Gods' Realm until the day of Black Adam's betrayal which led them to strip the gods of their powers and close the doors to the Magiclands. They find a small prison containing Superboy-Prime in the Monsterlands as Superboy-Prime states that he can hear what Mister Mind is saying. Mister Mind and Doctor Sivana begin their plans to free the Monster Society of Evil from the Dungeon of Eternity.[22]
Mister Mind senses the fight between the Shazam Family and Mamaragan as he instructs Doctor Sivana to stab his magical eye with a dagger which starts to melt the doors to the cells holding the Monster Society of Evil. Then Mister Mind started to control C.C. revealing to Billy that he is using him as a host and not Doctor Sivana. Mister Mind states to the Shazam Family that he plans to use C.C. to unite the Magiclands under his rule. He then proceeds to summon the Monster Society of Evil leaving Dummy behind who is tricked by Superboy-Prime into freeing him.[23] Shazam faces off against a Mister Mind-controlled C.C. Batson while the others fight the Monster Society of Evil. During the fight, Scapegoat and Red Queen ask when they are going to get a turn. Mister Mind states that they will get their chance when the Magiclands are united.
Mister Mind states to Shazam that it took him and Doctor Sivana awhile to find C.C. Batson. When Doctor Sivana uses a spell on Victor and Rosa Vasquez to get what Mister Mind wants, Shazam asks what that is. Speaking through C.C., Mister Mind states that he wants what Mamaragan and his Council of Wizards denied him years ago....access to the magic of the Seven Magiclands. When Tawky Tawny tries to help Shazam, Mister Mind has C.C. turn him into a cub. Then he has Doctor Sivana summon the Book of Champions from the Rock of Eternity. Mister Mind then has Shazam read the spells on the pages in exchange for sparing Victor and Rosa. Complying with Mister Mind, Shazam reads "Seven lands. Seven wars. Seven locks. Seven doors. Magic realms hidden now, show yourself to the Champion and with one final word, the spell is complete! SHAZAM!"
This causes all the doorways to the Seven Magiclands to be unlocked and obliterated. Using a spell from the Book of Champions, Shazam shrinks himself with the Subtraxerim spell and enters C.C.'s head to confront Mister Mind.[24] Shazam confronts Mister Mind inside C.C.'s head and engages him in a magic battle. To prevent Mister Mind from casting spells, Shazam punches his talkbox enough to emit energy that knocks out the Monster Society of Evil. After using the Corpus Magnum spell to grow, Shazam works to undo Mister Mind's spell only for Superboy-Prime to interfere. He was able to undo the spell after he and Black Adam defeated Superboy-Prime.[25]

Take You Away ➳Yandere Deadlock!McCree x reader➳ pt. II
warnings? Maybe a hint of violence at the end.
part i
Motorcycles thundered down the dirt road and dust trails rose and fell in their wake. Overpowered engines shattered the natural peace of the grassy, country valley as the sun bled the sky in violets and reds. Jesse’s hair flew behind him in chocolate curls as you begrudgingly held on for dear life. Your stomach felt every bump and dip as you and the gang flew through the valley like bats out of hell. You were on your way to the next farm that caught their eye as Deadlock gang was on a nomadic passage to the next safe location.
Dirt clouded the visor of your helmet and didn’t help to ease your nausea. Your eyes trailed to Jesse’s hair that whipped here and there, recalling how he placed the helmet on your head without permission, dubbing you “precious cargo.” You rolled your eyes. If it was how it used to be you would worry for his safety or be flattered at his care for you, but you couldn’t afford to soften for him again. Betrayal was still too fresh in your heart to ever give him another inch. Your hands loosened from around his waist as you considered letting go and allowing yourself to tumble from the bike into a landing that would hopefully break your neck.
The plains were too flat and the grass too soft in cushioning your fall so you would wait until a better opportunity presented itself.
The sun was beginning to set on the horizon when you allowed your eyes to trail to the deadlock member riding beside you. His skin was sun-kissed bordering on leathery and harsh stubble gathered along his strong jaw. Though his eyes had crows’ feet and he was beginning to develop laugh lines he was handsome and wore a slight grin as if there was some joke only he was in on. He caught your eye and winked, and you swiveled your head in the other direction. ‘God, do they all do that?’
That night at Nana’s when you came face to face with the gang that you had only heard of in hushed whispers was slightly underwhelming. Some of these men were handsome. Some you recognized from around town. None you could see being in such a notorious gang and you guess that was the true cause of the dread that iced your spine—the fact that these men were and could be anyone. They walked among the common masses and you had no idea.
Everyone killed their engines as they decelerated into a cruise through a darkened forest. “We’ll leave the bikes in the brush and head towards that barn.” Jesse stated as he pulled over behind a strong oak and helped you from his bike. Every single bit of contact his skin made against yours made you want to wash. “I know you must be sore, sugar. Don’t worry, we’ll sleep soon.”
A few guys dropped their bikes loudly so they could stretch and pop achy joints. “Watch it!” Ashe reprimanded.
“Why can’t we just keep riding?” A particularly achy member asked, “Or why not just bust in an’ take the house for ourselves? I’m sick of layin’ in the hay.” He grumbled but Ashe was quick to stamp down any sliver of insubordination.
“Because,” Ashe’s pupils were bullets and venom dripped from her every word. ‘Why did he do a stupid thing like that?’ “We don’t need no more trouble on our way to the location and a trail of corpses is the closest way to find us!”
Ashe was in his face before your eyes adjusted to the dark, her alabaster complexion shown vividly in the choked darkness. “Now, I support any question that ain’t a stupid one, but just so happens that any question questioning my way of doing things is a stupid one.” There was no sound but her voice and the shallow breaths of the others. You held yours. “Now, put that fucking bike away properly before I put you away.” And everyone scattered to hide their bikes as perfectly as they could even without a light to see.
Putting some space between you and Jesse, you found yourself arm to arm with Bob. You glanced up at him to see his eyes glowing through the gloom and already looking at you. You waved weakly; you hadn’t met any omnics outside of hospitals and superstores where you were from. “Hey…” he was still before waving cheerily at you.
“Oh, looks like Bob here’s made a friend.”
The smile froze on your face stiffly when that drawl reached your ears. You turned slowly to see Ashe radiant in the moonlight. She walked gracefully over the scattered leaves without having to watch her step. “Glad to see you’re fittin’ in just fine.”
You couldn’t bring yourself to answer sarcastically and you couldn’t lie by agreeing. Caught in a limbo your lips formed an awkward, tight line. She gazed at you a bit longer with that indiscernible smile on her face before whipping her hair over her shoulders. “Everyone to the barn.” She had been giving you that smile every time you seemed to draw her attention—which was more often than not. What was she thinking?
Gangsters ambled through the brush while you kept yourself rooted to the spot. No one took notice as you let yourself fall to the back of the pack and then a lone straggler as you began to lose sight of the group. You didn’t know where you were, but maybe you could take off running until you stumbled onto a road and then followed it a few miles to the next house. Could it be so easy?
No.
Arms seized your waist and held you close, and stubble scraped against your cheek. “Waitin’ up for me, sugar?” Jesse cooed as he held you in an embrace slightly below crushing and swayed side to side to silent ballroom music.
“Hardly.” You spit out before you could stop yourself, but thankfully he acted like he hadn’t heard you.
“We haven’t been able to be alone like this for forever.” He hummed, “Ain’t it nice? Jus’ you an’ me.” His voice dropped low and softened and it was almost soothing as the tension faded from your shoulders.
“I didn’t know you started Deadlock.”
He flinched, “It wasn’t just me—”
“Same difference.”
He was quiet but still swaying as he rested his head on your shoulder. “What’s done is done.” He didn’t try to deny, and the tone was proof that even if he had regrets, he had already done too much to turn back now. You knew it was a low blow but felt like berating him. You needed a way to get this anger out. He never spoke of his parents, but from all your time together you knew that this gang had been the only chance he had of survival all those years ago.
“If only I met you first.” He would say to you with a look of complete devotion when you two were alone. If only…
Jesse perked up, refilled with vigor to cheer you up. Couldn’t he understand that you couldn’t go back to the way you were?
“Y’know…Ashe won’t come looking for us for a while now.” He pulled you into him, stomach against stomach and you pressed into his spread legs as he leaned carelessly against a tree. “If we make a sound, an’ no one’s around to hear it, y’know?”
You stared at him sternly before that old twinkle came back. The same mirth that came whenever he used to say something corny to get a reaction, “That’s not even how that works!”
“Well, of course it’ll still happen, but…”
“Get to the barn, Jesse McCree.”
“I love when ya take charge, sweet pea.”
You climbed the wooden ladder to the loft. Moonlight was your only aid as you grabbed handfuls of hay to pull yourself aboard. Ashe had already made a nest for herself and had taken off her boots and extra accessories. You had been sleeping beside Ashe at night—her orders much to Jesse’s despair—and you came to notice her little rituals. She carried a small bowl and water decanter with her to wipe off her foundation, sunblock and lipstick, letting her much paler—bordering on translucent—skin get a breather overnight. She slept with smaller pistols in the waistband of her trousers and was an incredibly light sleeper. When she folded up a discarded shirt or her own coat to rest her head on, the hand tucked in for support would be clutching a razor-sharp hunting knife.
You obviously wanted to keep your distance at night, but she insisted you slept on a hair’s breadth apart.
“Us girls gotta stick together.” She chided feigning as if she wasn’t the deadliest person in a 30-mile radius.
You plopped down beside her and turned your back. The hay helped preserve body heat at least and it was still fresh.
“Did you remember to take your medicine?” You laid quietly before rolling back over and sitting up. “No.” You extended a hand as she was already jingling her little pouch of pink pills. “You can’t skip a single day. We don’t need any liabilities on the road.”
The little pouch contained birth control; small tablets resembling sweet tarts but not as good if you accidentally bite down. “Here’s something to drink.” She handed you her thermal of cold coffee and you nodded in thanks.
The small tablets went down hard every time when you thought of the implications.
“Ashe…” You murmured in the quiet of the loft as the men below had settled in for the night.
“Hmm?” she hummed as she was putting the thermos away.
Ask about the birth control. Why do you need them? What’s going to happen to you? What are they planning? Can’t you talk or beg your way out of this?
“Thank you.”
The smile that bloomed on her face was genuine as she placed a truly lily-white hand against your cheek. “Don’t fret none. I’m just lookin’ out for what’s best for you.”
If only that were true.
You lay awake all night looking for answers.
The next day you all continued your passage to a more stable base of operations.
“It’s this old shanty town type place.” A guy pipes up as he recalls, “There’s a building like a compound and it’s in the middle of the desert.” You listen in feeling sicker by the second as you picture the scene. Wide open desert meant no place to hide if you made a run for it. You couldn’t run at night as Ashe was an extremely light sleeper and you always met her eyes every time you merely budged while sleeping. Jesse kept a tight leash on you during the day, so options were scarce.
“We’ll fin’ly stay somewhere with a shower.” He nudged you jovially, “Bet the misses will like that.” He chirped with a mouth missing only a few teeth.
“Shoot yeah.” You tried to grin amicably. Despite the company you found yourself in, it seemed like most treated you warmly. With growing horror, it was almost like you were part of the gang.
“Ya always smell like roses to me, babe.” Jesse said as he lifted you up from behind and over the shoulder. “Don’t!” The world spun as he twirled you both around. “I’m dizzy!”
“Ol’ McCree’s always gotta show off his pretty. young thing.” Someone said to which others catcalled and whistled. Jesse settled you down gently but you wobbled and held tight to him so you wouldn’t fall. “’Course! Y/n’s my treasure.” His voice became more earnest as he dropped the joking tone, “She’s a good woman.”
“We know, we know!” The rest crowed and like that you turned your back to continue the trek on the narrow foot path.
When dirt gave to sand and wind was visible, you knew that you were close. Everyone mounted their bikes and you were seated in front of Jesse with his arms caging you as he steered.
You don’t know how long you rode like this as there were no land markers but cacti that could’ve gotten up and walked for all you knew. You knew you were there when the concrete building came into view. It did look like a compound with lesser enforced shacks built off of it. It was one story with square, dirty windows and you could see people going about their business hanging laundry and tending to the animals.
When Jesse accelerated instead of decelerating, your heart caught in your throat.
“Jesse…What’s…”
“Shh, sugar.” He cooed into your ear, “Just business as usual.”
Someone fired a gun and a clay pot exploded into a million little pieces. “Jesse, stop!”
“No one has to get hurt.” He murmured, “As long as no one tries to be a hero this will all be quick an’ painless…” And suddenly he was far beyond his years as you were going to see Deadlock McCree.
Motorcycles barreled into the courtyard, tearing down laundry lines and flipping tables. People screamed as they grabbed each other and their children out of the way as the deadlock members drove indiscriminately. More gunshots, more screams, no one hit, but they were being terrorized and herded like cattle here and there. Some men dismounted and took to raiding the rooms and ripping people from their hiding places. Crying faces were brought to light and you elbowed and turned to beat Jesse as hard as you could. You couldn’t just be a bystander.
These people cried out in a language you couldn’t recognize, and you finally realized this was something of a reservation. Unprotected by the government but allowed to exist all the same. Deadlock was harming people who no one would fight for.
“Now, stop that. It’s almost done.” Jesse pinned your arms to your sides with ease and you wrenched around viciously, kicking and hissing, not caring if you tipped the bike over and you along with it. You screamed and tried to bite Jesse’s nose clean off. The louder and desperate the cries you heard, the more hurried you were. You successfully head butt Jesse and he released you in his surprise. Completely on autopilot, you reached for one of his guns that he had never thought to conceal from you. You had never reached for it before and you were beginning to understand that being underestimated was the greatest strength you had at this point. You jumped off the bike and turned to the frenzied pillaging. The gangsters laughed with malice and sadistic glee as they chased women carrying their dazed children off the res. Men who didn’t get the hint had a punch to the jaw and another for clear measure. The elderly were shoved and goaded, and everything was complete hell.
You fumbled with the safety as you put a quick distance between you and Jesse.
“Y/n! Get back here!” You aimed, you wouldn’t kill but you needed this to stop. You needed all of this depravity to stop. You aimed at the leg of a running gangster and fired just when Jesse tackled you to the ground.
“What do ya think you’re doing?” He crushed the air from your lungs and your ears were ringing from the impact your head made against the tightly packed ground. Was the back of your head bleeding? You think you hit a rock. Sand went into your nose and you couldn’t lift the hand holding the pistol as Jesse grabbed your wrist and wrenched it from you.
“Are you outta your mind? You could’ve gotten hurt!” You stared up at him quietly until you raised yourself on your elbows just enough to spit in his face.
“Good. What makes me any more important than any of these people? They could get hurt, Jesse.” Your eyes met and the sheer astonishment in his usually warm brown eyes—always warm when they were looking at you—gave you a sad satisfaction. “You’re a monster.”
An explosion of pain erupted against your left cheek and you felt like something burst. Your head crashed against the dirt again and this time you did not get up.

"It doesn't get easier, Terry." Bruce has never been the best at comfort, that didn't change with age. But he tries. "All you can do is keep moving, live on for their sake."
The fourteen year old didn't know whether to feel comforted by those words or not. They were pretty harsh, in his opinion. But maybe they were what he really needed.
It hadn't been too long since he'd taken the mantle of 'Batman' -- not too long since the murder of his father, Warren McGinnis.
Terry tried hard not to show that he was still in the process of grieving. Given the horrible things he'd said to his old man beforehand, it was sometimes all he could think about.
"You think I don't know that?" His tone was just a little angry. But those feelings weren't directed at Bruce himself...
Of course, how could he expect to hide anything from Mr. Wayne? Of all people.
He crossed his arms over his chest, subconsciously shielding himself. The anger in his voice dying down quickly. "I'm trying to keep moving. All I ever do is keep moving."
It was really all he knew to do. Anytime anything went wrong, no matter how bad it was, he would just take it and keep going. What else was there to do, after all? It wasn't in his nature to lie down and give up. He was too stubborn.
"Look-- I know you mean well..." And Terry was sure the old man did, despite the content of the message. "But you don't have to worry about me.
Besides, don't we have a case to solve right now?" Those 'accidents' at Foxteca for example. Surely they were more of the priority right now.

I said I wasn’t writing a figure skating au: Interlude - Jack
Part I. Part II. Part III. Ao3.
Jack Zimmermann has always wanted to play hockey. As far back as he can remember, he’s been at home on the ice, as comfortable on skates as he is in tennis shoes.
It’s everything outside that’s gotten in the way of that. The expectations. The pressure—not enough to be good, have to be better, always better, because you don’t get to be fallible and human when you’re the son of a superstar, you have to be exceptional—
Even almost ten years later, he doesn’t always know how to talk about what happened before the draft. He doesn’t know how to explain that he wasn’t trying to do anything but loosen the vise around his ribcage making it impossible to breathe, quiet the not-so-little voice shouting that he was going to fail, that he shouldn’t try to pretend otherwise—
(He woke up after to the beeping of a heart monitor and his mother gripping his hand more tightly than she ever had before, and when he’d croaked out a soft Maman she’d started crying)
Jack’s grateful for Samwell to an extent he never expected. He needed the chance to get his head on straight, to be just Jack and not Jack Zimmermann, to figure out out how to love hockey again without drowning in anxiety. Without Samwell, he wouldn’t have found the Falconers, wouldn’t have two Stanley Cups under his belt, and definitely wouldn’t have even considered coming out.
But he had.
He does.
He did.
He made it.
And now, he’s at the Olympics, because screw the NHL for saying they weren’t going to participate, his country asked him to captain its team and he wasn’t going to say no.
(If George had needed to reassure him the Falconers would support whatever decision he made to keep him from agonizing over it, well, that’s between the two of them)
As the Games grew closer, Jack planned for anxiety, for stress over whether he’s qualified for the job he’s been asked to do and the nonsense questions he knows the media will have for him.
He didn’t plan for Eric Bittle.
(He almost wants to be annoyed with himself because he does not need distractions, especially not in the form of small, southern, blond figure skaters, but…
But Bittle had crashed to the ice in front of him and then talked about making a fool of himself on the world stage, a fear Jack is intimately familiar with, and somehow he hasn’t been able to stop thinking about him)
It’s incredibly inconvenient.
“He’s kind of a badass, you know,” Ransom says, after prying the source of Jack’s preoccupation out of him the day after he meets Bittle.
“Oh?”
“Ch’yeah, dude,” Ransom replies, leaning back against the wall of their shared room. “I heard earlier in the season he dislocated his shoulder right off the bat in a routine—didn’t even stop, just popped it back in himself and finished the program to win silver. No one even knew until he was asked about it afterwards. Badass.”
Which...that is not at all information Jack needed, because he already knows Bittle is talented—if he’s watched a few videos, he can hardly be blamed for wanting to know more about the stranger he’d met. But talented and dedicated?
Ransom laughs and reaches for his phone. “Oh my god, your face. I’m telling Holster about this, it’s too good not to—”
Jack throws a pillow at him.
“When’s he getting here anyway?” He asks, trying desperately to change the subject. He can’t deny that it’s nice to have a chance to play with one of his former teammates again, but it does make Ransom the one person on the team who knows him well enough to chirp him until the end of time.
“The day before our first game, but that’s not the point. The point is that you, Jack Zimmermann, oh Captain, my Captain...have a crush.”
Jack pinches the bridge of his nose and sighs.
“If I admit it, can we stop talking about it so I can sleep?”
The other side of the room goes abruptly silent. When Jack looks over, Ransom is staring at him.
“Rans? Justin?”
“Okay, for the record, that was like seventy-five percent chirping for the sake of chirping,” the other man says. “And because he seems like he would be your type—not that I would know that much about that since you never date—but seriously? You actually like him?”
And there’s an out in that, because if Jack lied and said no, Ransom would probably let it go. But...it would be a lie.
(It doesn’t make sense because they’ve only exchanged a handful of words, but Bittle—Eric—is breathtaking on the ice—fluid and graceful and powerful—and Jack knows next to nothing about figure skating, but he knows Eric is damn good at it, and yes, it’s attractive. He’s attractive. And Jack wants to talk to him again and oh, hell, he does have a crush)
“Yeah,” Jack admits. “I think I really do.”
So very inconvenient.

CANTLON: SANTOS TOP MAN IN THE EHL
BY: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings
NEWINGTON, CT - Spending time with a league commissioner provides a glimpse into just how harried and crazed of a life that it can be. It also reveals a greater appreciation as to how difficult the business side of hockey can be.
Mike Santos, is in his fourth season as the Executive Director of the Eastern Hockey League (EHL), a USA Hockey Tier III league that held one of their six Showcase events of its season last week at the Newington Ice Arena.
A showcase events allows the public to see another level of junior hockey, but more importantly, it provides an opportunity for collegiate coaches and scouts, the chance to look for prospects to fill roster openings.
The host team, the Connecticut Chiefs, includes ex-Hartford Whaler, Yvon “Ike” Corriveau, as an operator. There's another Connecticut team in the league, the RoughRiders. They are coached by Eric Lind (New Canaan/Avon Old Farms) who played for three Danbury minor pro teams, the Trashers (UHL), the Mad Hatters (EPHL), and the Whalers (FHL).
Several other coaches have Connecticut ties.
Chris Cerrella is the Head Coach of the New Hampshire Avalanche (Quinnipiac University/New Haven Knights (UHL). He was also the coach of the Hartford Jr. Wolf Pack for six years. Adam Houli (Gunnery Prep/Trinity College) (NESCAC) and Danbury Whalers) (FHL) coaches the New Jersey 87’s.
Three hours with Santos was like hanging with Al Pacino in Donnie Brasco, “Lets walk and talk."
Santos, who started out his hockey executive life as the marketing director for the departed New Haven Nighthawks. Now, as EHL commissioner, on this day he was an uncle, commissioner, business trade analyst, well-informed fan and he is all of those things to the EHL.
Hockey, for the Massachusetts native and Florida resident, is in his DNA. His sneakers get a frequent work out at these Showcases and as Commissioner, he makes the final call.
Santos demonstrated his avuncular side while chatting with one of the youngest players in the league, Cole Scott, of the East Coast Wizards (Bedford, MA).
Santos inquired and encouraged Scott's play. He asked how he was doing at school and wondered if he had a driving companion?
“Hockey is a lot of retail at this level. There's a lot more hands-on work and one-on-one communication that's required.”
Santos then walked to his left and handled a delicate and thorny issue tactfully about a potential ownership change with one of his teams and then arranged a meeting with an interested party.
“We had our Board of Governors meeting yesterday and, like any league, there are a variety of issues we're dealing with. There are different owners, all with their own issues. You would be amazed how it permeates to the youngest levels of hockey. You would be amazed how many youth teams that are actually owned by someone. We’re talking 10, 11, 12-year-olds. It's more complicated at this level dealing with people and egos. There’s never a dull moment,” Santos, who also serves on USA hockey junior and legal councils, said.
One of many stories Santos shared that best exemplifies the trials and tribulations he encounters was regarding the handling of player safety, which has progressed at all levels in the past five years and become priority number one.
“One young man barks at the referee one too many times and gets hit with a misconduct for not having his mouthpiece in. The coach calls later all upset. He’s concerned the player is being scouted by such-and-such schools today and they hit him with a misconduct for not having on a mouthpiece. We don’t enforce that here.”
Santos shoots back, “Are you serious ? Really? Its on page one of the league handbook. It's a policy directive from USA Hockey. You want to argue that before a judge if some kid’s parents are suing because the kid suffered a head injury in a league game? Tell the judge, we have the rule, but we don’t enforce it…ooh that would go over just great,” Santos said with a very heavy dose of sarcasm in his still audible Massachusetts accent.
Point noted and he takes out his cell phone to show pictures of another player who was injured in the league recently and the dental damage from wearing just a half visor not understanding why any player would not opt for full face protection.
Santos career has prepared him well. He worked for the NHL as a Manager of Special Events in Montreal and New York and in 1993 he ran the NHL Draft in Hartford.
He was also on the management side of the game serving as an assistant GM/Director of Hockey Ops with the New York Islanders, Nashville Predators, and Florida Panthers.
He has also helped to run the AHL operations of their affiliates in Lowell, Rochester, Milwaukee, and San Antonio. Santos was the Commissioner and President of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) where he steered the league out of chaos and into prosperity. He was also the President of the Norfolk Admirals (ECHL) for two seasons.
Santos has seen the game grow in quality, financially, and in complexity. He also has a JD degree from St. John’s University.
Two areas where he sees big changes being needed are in the cost of equipment, and in better development programs for officiating, and growing college hockey properly.
Walking through the pro shop, Santos stops to look at the racks of the shiny graphite sticks. “What’s the real difference in the weight and technology of these sticks,” he said while sampling a few.
“(Not much), and look at the price tag. $250 per stick. Get a dozen of those, that’s more than $3,000, and if they break, which they invariably do, that’s a lot of money for a kid. Outfitting a growing kid at like $2,000 or more is something that has to get addressed or we're gonna price out certain kids from the game.
"I remember as a kid we used any stick we could get. In high school, we got Christian sticks for free. The coach would drop a box in the center of locker room, so I used them. In college, there was a choice of Titan or KOHO. I still only managed a couple of goals a season. It wasn’t the stick. There are no wood sticks anymore. Major League Baseball still mandates wood bats. The NHL has a chance to do the same thing, but chose another path. I’m not sure what the formula is to deal with this, but the costs associated with the game from ice time to the equipment is considerable,” said Santos, a Boston College grad with a Masters degree from the US Sports Academy.
His lawyer skills came in handy with the NAHL. He helped to draft a constitution, and put a solid structure in place. The league is still in business and thriving.
The players in the USHL, or NAHL, that are future college prospects, can go to, or come to the league if need be, in order to maintain their NCAA eligibility and elevate their game. It's now coast-to-coast and a major component for Division I college hockey. The EHL is on the same path.
"More kids are playing out West, and the non-traditional markets are no longer non-traditional any longer. Now we have more kids from Texas, Arizona and Southern California playing hockey. Clearly, we have players for all levels, including Division I, and we have a great many Division II and III schools here today. The player pool is spread throughout the country and with the high quality college club programs too. I was in Los Angeles last summer walking by a construction site near UCLA. I ask the guy, 'What are you building?' A new football building. The other one is like 10-15 years old. The money is there, and all the work the Kings have done out there, I think both USC, and UCLA could both have D1 teams. They both had very strong club programs for years. Arizona State’s new building will be ready in two years. Washington, Oregon, Utah, Oklahoma, and Texas have the resources, the land, and the program infrastructure to do this. The players are available. It's having the access. If you want to really grow the game nationally, that's very important and necessary with the amount of hockey being played out West.”
Next Santos went rink-side to watch some game action with Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) head coach, Sean Walsh. They witness a kid nailing another kid in the corner with a head shot with about five seconds left in the game.
A game misconduct was handed out. Santos' keen eye for detail watches the post-game interaction with the head coach of the kid hit with the game misconduct.
“Look at him, trying to work over the ref and the assistant with the linesman. It was the right call. The game’s over and you drill a kid like that, no need for it.”
He walks away as the linesman leaves the arena to chat with him about the play.
A few head coaches stop by to chat on a few things going on at the Showcase. He inquires how their hotel accommodations were.
Then his phone rings and a former NHL’er involved with one of the teams is calling to discuss future scheduling.
Santos starts running down a composite game structure off the top of his head for total games played, home and away, and the regional opponents that are possible without blinking or looking anything up.
“Things are always evolving and you’re often planning ahead on one subject or another. Junior hockey is changing and you have to keep adapting and these showcases are an example of the growth of the game. The kids are coming from many different places and we give them an avenue to do so.”
Santos and the EHL's work will always be a part of the growing showcase of the mosaic of hockey in the US.

In 1916, Tsar Eddard II hosts a ball at Winterfell to celebrate the Stark tricentennial. His wife, the Tsarina Catelyn Tully has just returned from Riverrun and gives a music box and a necklace inscribed with the words “Together in Riverrun” as a gift to her eldest daughter, 8-year-old Grand Duchess Sansa. The ball is suddenly interrupted by Petyr Baelish, the royal treasury advisor of the Starks. Before all of the gathered nobility and visiting dignitaries he declares that he and the Tsarina are in love and have been since they were children together. Amid the scandalized gasps Catelyn venomously denies his claims and questions if he has consumed far too much alcohol over the course of the night to take such a drastic leave of his senses.
The Tsar questions if Baelish knows that his declaration is surmountable to treason. He replies that he does and mocks the ruler claiming that the Tsarina gave herself to him before she ever made it to her marriage bed. Eddard grimly replies that his wife was a maiden upon their wedding night to which Catelyn surmises that it was her sister Lysa, now married to an elderly Italian Duke, with whom he had shared a bed. Ceased by the Palace Guards Petyr is forces to his knees on the ballroom floor. Fixing him with a steely gaze the Tsar decrees that Baelish stands accused of treason and slander, the punishment of which is death. However, he decides to be merciful and banish the man due to his years of faithful service as well as what childhood friendship he did share with the Tsarina. Should Baelish return though, he would be killed on sight.
Seeking revenge for his unrequited love and embarrassment, Petyr sold his soul in exchange for an unholy reliquary, which he uses to place a curse on the Stark family, sparking the War of the Five Kings; a conflict where four other Noble families questioned whether the grand dukes and duchesses were truly of royal blood; each family setting up their own candidate for the line of succession. During the siege of the palace, the Tsar and the three grand dukes are assassinated. Only Catelyn, Sansa and the youngest grand duchess Arya are able to escape with the aid of a young noble named Jaime, who shows them a secret passageway in Sansa's room. Petyr confronts the royals outside on a frozen river, only to fall through the ice and drown. The trio manage to reach a moving train, but only Catelyn climbs aboard while Sansa and Arya fall, hitting they’re heads on the platform and suffering amnesia.
Ten years later, the country is under communist rule and Catelyn has publicly offered 10 million gold dragons for the safe return of her daughters. Jaime and his friend/ unwitting partner-in-crime Brienne search for a look-alike to bring to Riverrun and pass off as Sansa and Arya so they can collect the reward. Elsewhere, Sansa, now 18 years of age and using the name "Alayne", leaves the rural orphanage where she grew up, still suffering from amnesia. Accompanied by a fellow orphan who showed up at the same time as she named “Nymeria” the pair decides to head to Winterfell, inspired by the passage on the necklace Alayne still has. They are unable to leave due to not having exit visas, but an old woman advises them to see Jaime at the abandoned palace where he has made residence. There they encounter Jaime and Brienne, who are impressed by the pair’s resemblance to the "real" grand duchesses and decide to take them with them to Riverrun. Before they leave Brienne questions Jaime if he truly believes the pair to be the missing girls, vowing to abandon him if he is trying to con the former Tsarina. Jaime assures her he has the utmost faith that they are the true heiresses but Brienne seems unconvinced.
As the group leaves the palace they cross over the frozen lake and beneath the ice Petyr’s dormant reliquary is suddenly revived by the girls presence; it sinks through the earth to limbo, where Baelish survives. He is enraged to discover that Sansa and Arya escaped the curse, and because they survived, he was not able to die completely, and has been stuck in limbo as a rotting corpse. Using the reliquary Baelish sends his demonic minions from the reliquary to kill them.
Alayne, Jaime, Nymeria and Brienne board a train headed to Riverrun, but end up having to hide in the baggage car when their passports' coloration is overheard to not match the proper color. Baelish's minions also intend to derail the train, but the group manages to escape before it plunges into a canyon. They continue on foot, with Brienne telling of the Dowager Empress' brother Edmure, who questions anyone claiming to be Sansa and Ayra. The pair become indignant that no one told them they had to prove they were the grand duchesses. Brienne convinces them that there's nothing for either of them back in Winterfell, and that Riverrun could hold something special. She tells that her father had been captain of the palace guard and the guilt of the royal family's deaths had tortured him until his death. Before his passing though he made Brienne promise to try and find the young girls if they were still alive, and return them to their mother. Her words convince them, and they begin going over proper etiquette and Stark history. Eventually, they take a ship from White Harbor to Riverrun, where both Jaime and Alyane perform a waltz, which seems to bring the two a bit closer together. That evening, Baelish invades Alayne’s dream, but her exit from the cabin wakes Nymeria who alerts Jaime. The enchanted dream causes her to almost sleepwalk over the edge of the boat, until Jaime saves her.
After two failed assassination attempts Petyr decides to travel back to the surface, contemplating that perhaps Alayne would be a replacement for Catelyn.
The group eventually reach Riverrun and go to meet Catelyn, who has given up the search: having been nearly fooled numerous times by impostors. Despite this, Catelyn’s brother Edmure, quizzes the girls to confirm her identities. Though they offer every answer taught to them, Jaime finally realizes they are the real grand duchesses when they (without being taught to) vaguely recollect how he had saved them ten years prior. Edmure, also convinced of the girls identities, arranges a meeting with Catleyn at the Palais Garnier Opera house. There, Jaime tries to establish an introduction but Catelyn refuses, having already heard of Jaime’s initial scheme to con her. She also recognizes him as Count Tywin Lannister’s son who had offered Jaime up as a “replacement” for Catelyn’s eldest son Robb in the line of succession. Jaime tries to explain that he never wanted the crown but Catelyn cuts him off describing the horror of seeing her eldest child being cut down by Jaime’s father during the sacking of the palace. She then accuses him of plotting to place a woman who is likely his mistress within the royal family in an attempt to gain back some of his family’s once great wealth and tittles. As he is physically removed from the theater box Jaime reminds Catelyn that it was he who aided the escape of herself and her daughters, to which she replies is the only reason she had not ordered his death upon the beginning of their meeting.
Sansa overhears the conversation and angrily confronts Jaime before leaving, feeling used. She informs Arya of the scam and the pair decide to pack their belongings and strike out on their own. Jaime meanwhile kidnaps Catelyn and takes her to see Sansa and Arya, showing her the music box he recovered during their escape. The girls finally meet Catelyn and regain their memories as they converse, convincing the empress of their identities. The three are joyfully reunited.
Catelyn offers Jaime the reward money, but to her surprise, he refuses it and leaves for Highgarden. She thanks him saving them that night and assures he shall always have a place at her hearth and table. Brienne is knighted and offered a place within the Stark household, which she humbly excepts. That night at Sansa and Arya’s return celebration, their mother informs them of Jaime's gesture, leaving Sansa torn between staying or being with him. Arya, bemoaning having to wear such a restricting dress suddenly runs off; Sansa chases her to the Pont Rickard III, where she is trapped and attacked by Baelish who attempts to abduct her to make her his bride. Jaime returns to save her but is injured and knocked unconscious. In the struggle, Arya manages to get hold of Petyr's reliquary and Sansa crushes it under her foot; killing him.
In the aftermath, Jaime and Sansa reconcile; they then elope, and Sansa sends a farewell letter to Catelyn and Edmure, promising to return one day. Arya travels with them but quickly becomes disgusted by their constant displays of affection and soon sets off with a young adventurer named Gendry.
