I like to think of Simon as Edwin's fourth love interest not bc i think they should be together or that it would be a good idea but bc I like the tragedy of the eternal What Ifs they're both left with. like what could have been in another world? what if Simon had been kinder? what if they'd both been less afraid? what if they had the safety to be less afraid? what if Simon hadn't lashed out in humiliation and ended both their lives that night? what if they had the chance to grow up properly? what if they got to settle into themselves more? would Simon have apologized for all that he did to Edwin? would Edwin have forgiven him? could they have been friends? had a life together? or even a chance to try? could they have been happy? but they'll never know bc in the end Simon was cruel and they were both afraid and it killed them and they both spent decades in hell drowning in self hatred and fear as a result and yes now they've both managed to move on at least partially but there will forever be the question of what if things had been different?
