Ice Towers

Mt. Erebus is an active volcano on an island in the Ross Sea off of Antarctica. The volcano has been continuously erupting since the early 1970s and hosts one of the few long-lived lava lakes on Earth.

This feature being climbed is one of the ice towers that grow on the slopes of this huge mountain. Fumaroles are common features at volcanoes around the world; hot gases like gases like water, carbon dioxide, and sulfur contained in magmas at depth leak out of the lava and escape from the ground at holes called fumaroles. In most places, a fumarole is just a hole, but on the slopes of Erebus, the water being released freezes in the cold Antarctic air, building huge ice towers like this one.
