“Otonari ni Ginga” The Opening Theme, Second Promo

The official website of the television anime that will be based on Gido Amagakure's Otonari ni Ginga (A Galaxy Next Door) manga released the opening tune, a second commercial, and a key image. On April 9 at 1:30 a.m., Tokyo MX and BS11 will air the animation.

The Problem(s) with A Galaxy Next Door

A Galaxy Next Door was a show that had in hindsight little potential to be anything special. I gave it a shot only because my friend told me he was watching it. Sometimes you’ll miss out on cool shows if you don’t take recommendations from others…unfortunately, A Galaxy Next Door was a dud. A failure to launch. It never had anything going for it, and was perfectly okay with it.

A Galaxy Next Door is about Ichirou Kuga–a mangaka who’s overworking himself to a near breaking point. With his last two assistants quitting in order to pursue their own dreams, he’s shouldered the burden of not only supporting himself but also his two younger siblings. The only other source of income for them is the social apartment that he inherited from his late father. It’s implied that they’re not that well off, but considering they own a (small) apartment complex, they can’t be that destitute. If anything, he could always sell the place and relocate him and his siblings to a smaller, more appropriate, house. Well, at least there are no bad landlords in fiction.

Back to his ‘breaking point’–when he’s near missing a deadline, Shiori Goshiki appears. She applies to be his new assistant, saving the day for him and his manga. Her skills at drawing are impressive, especially considering she’s only been practicing (and reading manga) for a year! You see, Goshiki is a ‘princess’ from a ‘kingdom’. That kingdom is some remote island that’s basically just like us, but not because they have alien nobility. Yes, Goshiki is an alien…the only feature she has different from any of us is that she has an invisible stinger on her back.

Kuga accidentally touches that stinger, which ‘binds’ them to marriage. Wow, how lucky for him. This is in episode one by the way. There’s almost no build-up to this. Just him touching that invisible stinger, which seals his fate for him. The rest of the anime is them acting awkwardly around each other while trying to delay the inevitable.

I’m sure you can see the first problem with A Galaxy Next Door…it’s boring as all hell. Every episode is pretty much the same, with the main two acting flustered around each other for twenty minutes and then the episode ends. Maybe his two siblings get some words in. They don’t add that much truth be told. A Galaxy Next Door seems to be deathly afraid of Kuga and Goshiki having distance from each other, to the point where they become sick if they’re more than like ten miles apart. It holds a paranoid view that they always HAVE to be together. There’s nothing that leads you to want to see what happens next. No excitement, no thrill, no mystery. Just constant reassurance that Kuga loves Goshiki and Goshiki loves Kuga. It feels like the whole show is them trying to justify their relationship, something that shouldn’t exist in the first place. Like really, Goshiki’s invisible stinger never plays any further role in the show…maybe after episode 7, but that was when I had enough of it.

What makes A Galaxy Next Door even worse is that the pacing is awkward. It feels like I’m watching a screenplay done by middle schoolers. It has the pacing of The Room. Scenes that should only be a few minutes long drag on for half the episode, making you feel like you’re wasting your time. The incredibly slow and stilted pacing makes an already boring show even harder to watch.

When the ending is finalized at the beginning, the least the story could do is be interesting. A Galaxy Next Door forgoes that in a bid to establish a ‘safe space’. One where Kuga and Goshiki’s relationship can’t ever be seriously challenged. One where they act like pre-teens in their first relationship, except that they’re both adults that can barely handle holding hands. Look, I get that it’s a common trope, but at least act like you’ve been there before. Is this really ‘healing’? Are there people that watch this and feel better afterward? I sure as hell didn’t. There’s nothing that A Galaxy Next Door offers that hasn’t already been done better by other anime. The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten shares similar themes, however, does it in a way more compelling way. It also actually has some comedic scenes–something A Galaxy Next Door, despite being labeled a ‘comedy’, fails to have. If you want to watch an anime where the leadup to the main couple being in a relationship is solved within one episode, and the rest of the show is them giving each other constant reassurance, even if they’re bound to marriage, then A Galaxy Next Door is your show. If you want to watch something that manages to be 10 times more interesting while being 60 times as short, then you can watch Porsche mechanics change the front brakes on a 911 RSR in under 30 seconds.

Rant of the week: Otonari ni Ginga (A Galaxy Next Door)

Welcome to my weekly rant about a certain thing. I'm not sure what else will follow in the future although I have a small list of things I wanna go through. I try to put out one rant a week (for a not very sociable person like I am that's a lot).

Without further ado let's dive into today's anime of choice: Otonari ni Ginga / A Galaxy Next Door.

A short anime with 12 episodes and in my opinion almost a must watch for lovers of the romance genre.

The story starts with our main character Ichirou Kuga and his two younger siblings Machi and Fumio who have just lost their father to an illness. Now Ichirou is trying to make a living from being a landlord and his passion: a manga artist. He wants to save up enough money to eventually send his siblings off to college if they choose to do so.

However, he is barely making deadlines and now has to care for his siblings on top of his other duties, so he eventually finds an assistant in Shiori Goshiki, a young woman who seems quite artistically talented despite having never drawn manga.

Soon he will find out things about her he could have never imagined.

Without spoiling anything I will say that there is a slight supernatural twist in the story that is the driving force behind the plot.

What makes this show so great? Good question!

It is an adorable story about family and love that blooms in all these characters. Ichirous siblings are the cutest little siblings I have ever seen in an anime. Shiori is a girl from a distant island so she has never had much contact with the outside world. She is also no primitive being but gets excited about the most simple things, making her adorable.

Ichirou is a normal guy who is always willing to help despite the workload on his table but ultimately kinda sucks at socializing making him very relatable.

BUT the biggest plus point is: this anime actually almost exclusively focuses on romance so it's consistently cute and enjoyable for romance lovers. The characters are amazingly written and realistic and not a single one of them is annoying but they're still unique in their own sense.

What was important for me is that these characters are not like shy little teenagers or act on impulse and do something stupid over and over again. The main couple is a shy mess sometimes but that's only because neither of them have any idea how a relationship is supposed to work which makes it even cuter.

In short: A must-watch for romance enjoyers and finally an anime that actually focuses on romance and presents it well.

Manami runs away from the Cornucopia. Daiki finds a backpack full of camping equipment. Chieko, Shigeo, Hiraku, and Nana share everything they gathered before running. [This is somewhat cute????] Lola sets an explosive off, killing Michiko, Masashi, Tsubaki and Koji. [LOLA YOU SAVAGE] Yoko takes a spear from inside the cornucopia. Takashi runs away with a lighter and some rope. Keiko finds a bag full of explosives. [Keiko... KEIKO...] Mika takes a spear from inside the cornucopia. Tamaki and Kimiko fight for a bag. Tamaki gives up and retreats. Hiroshi stays at the cornucopia for resources. Himari takes a spear from inside the cornucopia. Sachi runs away from the Cornucopia. Hikaru runs away from the Cornucopia. Itsuki snatches a pair of sais. Riku runs away with a lighter and some rope. Suzume scares Kiyoko away from the cornucopia. [oH NO :(((] Moe steals from Kazuo M. while he isn't looking. [Moe,,,] Soren chases Noboru. [S-soren...] Mika picks flowers. [This is cute] Riku tends to Ran's wounds. [Good boy!!] Himari receives a hatchet from an unknown sponsor. Daiki makes a slingshot. Takayuki falls into a frozen lake and drowns. [TAKAYUKI YOU DUMB GJKDFG] Killian scares Sayaka off. [KILLIAN???] Yoko camouflauges herself in the bushes. Mona and Hikaru work together for the day.

A volcano erupts at the center of the arena. Himari pushes Moe in the lava. [HIMARI WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT TO HER] Ichiro survives. Suzume survives. Kazuo K. survives. Kazuo M. survives. [Kazuo’s are the superior] Sachi dips her weapon in the lava and kills Toshio with it. [SACHI WHEN DID YOU HATE TOSHIO] Soren survives. Ran dips her weapon in the lava and kills Tamaki with it. [RAN WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT] Riku is buried in ash. [Riku,,, baby] Takara A. survives. Hibiki survives. Killian survives. Hikaru survives. Itsuki is buried in ash. [Itsuki,,, bab] Kimiko survives. Daisuke survives. Hiro survives. Yoko suffocates. [Yoko,,,,] As Mona trips over Nana into the lava, she grabs her and pulls her down with her. [MONA GJKFBDJG NANA JGBDFG] Kiyoko is buried in ash. [Kiyoko,,,] Manami survives. Chieko survives. Mika dips her weapon in the lava and kills Noboru with it. [mIKA] Daiki dips his weapon in the lava and kills Sayaka with it. [dAIKI]

Daisuke, Ran, Suzume, and Manami tell each other ghost stories to lighten the mood. Kazuo K. sees a fire, but stays hidden. Kimiko and Sachi huddle for warmth. [This ?? is?? cute??] Himari quietly hums. Mika and Soren track down and kill Hiro. [,,, MIKA AND SOREN] Takara A. looks at the night sky. Ichiro kills Daiki with a hatchet. [ICHIRO] Killian sets up camp for the night. Chieko dies trying to escape the arena. [CHIEKO NO] Hikaru and Kazuo M. huddle for warmth. [Awwww] Hibiki quietly hums.

Kazuo K. practices his archery. [This is canon] Suzume and Manami track down and kill Killian. [What dID KILLIAN DO] Sachi searches for a water source. Kimiko dies from thirst. [Kimiko,,,,] Ichiro practices his archery. Daisuke searches for firewood. Soren searches for firewood. Hikaru kills Ran while she is resting. [HIKARU WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT] Himari collects fruit from a tree. Takara A. makes a wooden spear. Mika, Hibiki, and Kazuo M. hunt for other tributes.

Daisuke tends to his wounds. Takara A., Hibiki, and Hikaru sleep in shifts. Kazuo K. sets an explosive off, killing Himari. [KAZUO KUGA HOW DARE YOU] Soren, Mika, Ichiro, and Manami sleep in shifts. The cornucopia is replenished with food, supplies, weapons, and memoirs from the tributes' families. Mika decides not to go to The Feast. Manami decides not to go to The Feast. Suzume ambushes Soren and kills him. [SUZUME KILLED S O R E N WHY] Hibiki decides not to go to The Feast. Ichiro decides not to go to The Feast. Daisuke catches Hikaru off guard and kills him. [Daisuke,,, I love you but,,] Takara A. decides not to go to The Feast. Kazuo K. decides not to go to The Feast. Sachi dies from an infection.  [Sachi,,, sweetie,,]

Hibiki searches for firewood. Kazuo K. is pricked by thorns while picking berries. [You dumb] Ichiro receives a hatchet from an unknown sponsor. Manami diverts Takara A.'s attention and runs away. Daisuke sprains his ankle while running away from Mika. [Mika??] Suzume travels to higher ground.

Hibiki receives clean water from an unknown sponsor. Mika thinks about winning. Suzume kills Manami with her own weapon. [sUZUME] Daisuke receives a hatchet from an unknown sponsor. Ichiro attempts to start a fire, but is unsuccessful. Kazuo K. receives medical supplies from an unknown sponsor. Takara A. is awoken by nightmares. [:((]

Daisuke, Kazuo K., Ichiro, Suzume, and Hibiki hunt for other tributes. Takara A. receives a hatchet from an unknown sponsor. Mika thinks about home.

Ichiro, Suzume, Takara A., Kazuo K., and Daisuke sleep in shifts. Hibiki begs for Mika to kill him. She reluctantly obliges, killing Hibiki.  [This sounds sad...]

Daisuke receives medical supplies from an unknown sponsor. Kazuo K. constructs a shack. Ichiro throws a knife into Mika's head. [ICHIRO WHAT THE FUCK] Suzume explores the arena. Takara A. falls into a pit and dies. [Takara,,, hun,,,]

Kazuo K. attempts to climb a tree, but falls to his death. [THIS IS WHY YOU DON’T TRY TO BE TALLER] Ichiro starts a fire. Daisuke attempts to start a fire, but is unsuccessful. Suzume cries herself to sleep. [bab :((((]

Ichiro tries to sleep through the entire day. Daisuke begs for Suzume to kill him. She refuses, keeping Daisuke alive.

The supporting cast, main cast, first promotional video, and key image for the television anime Otonari ni Ginga (A Galaxy Next Door) were all announced on Wednesday on the show's official website. A broadcast of the anime is planned for April 2023.
