Duchess Swan Redesign/"Monster form".

Hello again, I've something a bit different today...

Ever after high is a criminally underappreciated and terrifyingly interesting story,so I've decided to let loose my concept of how I'd reboot the show to fit within the universe of my Monster High reboot ive been fleshing out through g1-style character bios on here and on my AO3 page (AndromedaRaptorFae for those interested), starting with this art of my version of Duchess Swan, the daughter of odette the Swan princess and an absolute bad-but-sad disaster of a girl.

To make a long story short,because of plot reasons, the ever after high kids end up in the "real world" of monster high and attend it for senior year after transforming into myriad monsters themselves. Duchess becomes a cockatrice, a dragonlike mediaeval monster that's part bird and part reptile (traditionally half and half Cockerel and snake but Duchess befitting her role is a Swan cockatrice) and a counterpart to the Basilisk (of which Duchess's own counterpart, the child of Odile the black Swan has as their "monster form").

Needless to say,a lot of the kids don't take these new changes to everything too well, and Duchess is one of them. She's already struggling with her own self-loathing and low self-worth,believing her grandmother who raised her as well as her transformed mother resent her for being a reminder of everything that happened in their story for starters. And that's not getting into any of the nonsense that's occurred during her time at ever after high.

All in all,as spiteful,envious and generally villainous as she is,Duchess is more or less just miserable and lonely, and gaining a tail and wings is honestly the last thing she thinks she needs,although she eventually learns how to manage, and how to ballet dance on bird feet.

Also,as a quick aside on Duchess being Trans, whilst she's not the only trans character within the cast of this rebooted eah, the idea of Duchess being a trans girl was primarily inspired by this amazing post by @royalrebelpropaganda . (Being a trans girl myself whose struggled with her self worth I can actually empathise a lot with the poor girl tbh,maybe its why shes one of my favourite eah characters?...)

Once they were outside the tunnel, Wolfpaw tentatively mumbled, "Dawnfrost, can I ask you something?"

"What's troubling you?"

"I... I was thinking, my mother doesn't really seem interested in, well, being my mother. She's so... moody and disinterested. Why?"

Dawnfrost sighed heavily, wishing she knew how to answer the young cat's question, how to take the sting from her experience of being virtually rejected. Wolfpaw was bound to have asked this question sooner or later.

"Sparrowthorn... was never a very affectionate cat; it just isn't in her nature. She also didn't take too kindly to responsibility."

Dawnfrost paused, a guilty look crossing her face as she spoke of her daughter in such a way, to her kit no less. But the kit in question deserved an explanation.

"But beyond that, some things happened when she was younger that... changed her," she continued, more gently.

"She became more distant and reckless after that, until eventually she had all but cut ties with me. I worried, if I'm being completely honest, when I found out she was expecting kits. I wish things could have been different for you, but what Sparrowthorn went through, the choices she made, they were beyond my control- some of it remains even beyond my knowledge. I'm sure it's hard to understand, but I want you to know that it has nothing to do with you. It's not your fault, and the rest of the clan and I love you very much."

Wolfpaw's ears were low, her golden eyes downcast. She knew Dawnfrost was trying her best to make her feel better, and she was grateful, but she still felt as though she had more questions than answers. Questions that were heavy in her chest and left a sour taste in her mouth, like some part of her knew the answers might be just as painful as the not knowing.

"Thanks, Grandma," she murmured, nonetheless, slowly sweeping her tail back and forth. She nuzzled her head against the older she-cat, who whispered, "Anytime you need to talk, or have questions to ask, I'm here, okay?"

Wolfpaw nodded, her nose touching Dawnfrost's so the elder could sense the motion. Against her will, she yawned. She couldn't help it; the sun had sunk below the horizon, and she had had an exhausting day. Dawnfrost huffed in faint amusement. "You must be tired, young one. Why don't you go to the apprentice den and rest, maybe talk to your friends before dinner?"

"Okay," came the sleepy response. "Goodbye, Dawnfrost."

"Goodbye, my little warrior."

Wolfpaw trudged over to the stack of hollow logs used by the apprentices as a den, her drowsiness fading as she realized she was about to spend her first night sleeping here instead of in the nursery.

This den wasn't the same as it had been when the elders were young; she had known it had been replaced, but now she was fairly sure she knew why.

The old one must have been torn up by that fox.

She was wondering where the clan had found all the hollow logs when she was startled to see a head poking out of one of them. She quickly recovered though as she recognized her friend; Fawnpaw had been waiting inside to greet her.

"Hi, Fawnpaw."

"Hey Wolfpaw!" the perky young she-cat called. "Welcome to the apprentice den! I already set up your new nest; it's beside mine in this log up here. I hope that's okay."

"That's great, thanks!"

"So, how's apprenticeship treating you?"

"Today was pretty easy; I practiced stalking and cleaned out the elders' bedding. But Duskstar says my training will get harder and harder, so they can make sure I'm 'fully prepared for the challenges I will face in the difficult life of a warrior.'" She did her best to imitate the solemn tone her mentor had used.

"Yeah, that sounds pretty similar to my first day. I think they tell all the apprentices that," Fawnpaw giggled.

"What's so funny?"

"Well, it's a rather dramatic way to put it, isn't it? And as far as I've seen, it doesn't really get that much harder, as long as you pay attention and do as you're told. I bet you'll ace your training, Wolfpaw. You're good at everything."

That got a smile.

"Thanks, Fawn."

The light brown she-cat slowly swished her tail for a moment, thinking.

"So, hey, you want me to give you the tour?" she asked.

Wolfpaw tilted her head and responded, "Sure."

"All right, come on then!"

Fawnpaw leapt down from inside her log and beckoned Wolfpaw to follow her. She circled around to the end of one of the bottom logs of the stack, peering into its dark interior.

"This is where Splinterpaw sleeps; he wanted a log to himself, something about personal space. Kinda stinks for Claypaw though, he would have liked having a... logmate? This one here is his," she pointed at the log next to Splinterpaw's with her nose.

"It gets a little more sunlight. I think Splinterpaw likes the darkness in his, but Claypaw prefers the warmth. It's really nice how there aren't too many apprentices; we each got to choose whichever log we wanted. Anyway, I've been saving a spot for you in my log since we moved in. I think Claypaw was hoping Lilacpaw could share his den, but, well, she's the medicine cat apprentice, so, that's not gonna happen. Kinda sad, I guess. We were both looking forward to you two moving in with us."

Wolfpaw froze.

"Wait, Lilacpaw won't be in the apprentice den?"

Fawnpaw tilted her head, meeting her younger friend's concerned gaze.

"No, silly. Don't you know? She'll sleep in the medicine den with Canyonbreeze," she explained.

"Oh," Wolfpaw muttered, her bushy black tail drooping sadly.

"Yeah, it really sucks," added a voice from behind them.

Wolfpaw whipped her head around to see Claypaw padding over to join the two she-cats. His chipper attitude from before was gone; he seemed pretty upset that he wouldn't be seeing his friend as often as he had hoped.

Wolfpaw knew how he felt. She and Lilacpaw had grown up together. Her mother, Silverbreeze, had been a major part of Wolfpaw's upbringing, and the two kits had come to be more like sisters than just denmates. She sighed, realizing that, for the first time in her short life, she wouldn't be sharing a den with the small gray-and-white cat.

"Hey, cheer up," Fawnpaw said comfortingly, noticing her friend's saddened state. "You've still got us, remember? And it's not like you can't see her everyday. She just won't be sleeping in the same place as us."

"Yeah... I guess you're right."

"Of course I am. Now come on," she said, brightening. "It's time for the clan to eat dinner, and you get to join us and pick your own prey for once!"

"All right, I'm coming. Hey! Wait up!"

Fawnpaw had already turned around and raced toward the center of camp, glancing back as if daring the others to try to beat her to the clearing.

Oh, that's how you wanna play it, huh? Okay, I'm game!

Wolfpaw gathered her legs beneath her and threw herself forward, ignoring the prickle of apprehension in the back of her mind and taking off after Fawnpaw. She shortened the gap between them, her paws flying across the rocky ground. At last she caught up, skidding to a halt just as they reached their destination. It felt unpleasantly familiar.

"Whoa," Fawnpaw panted. "You're still faster than me? Like I said, good at everything."

Wolfpaw, trying not to let her thoughts wander to past races, glanced around at the gathered cats. She saw her mentor sitting across the clearing; with a nod to her fellow apprentices, she dashed over to Duskstar's side.

"Greetings, Wolfpaw. Did you tend to the elders' bedding as you were told?"

The little she-cat dipped her head respectfully. "Yes, Duskstar," she answered.

"Good," the blue-gray tabby purred. "I thought as much. Well, now that your duties for the day are done, you may select something from the fresh-kill pile for dinner."

Wolfpaw padded slowly to the boulder in the center of the clearing where warriors deposited the fruits of their hunts throughout the day, letting her gaze drift over the warriors around her.

Almost everyone was there, except Canyonbreeze and Lilacpaw, who were still in the medicine den, and Goldenbrook, whose minor wounds they were tending. The she-cat had tripped over some rocks while hunting and had scratched herself up. Nothing serious, but she had gone to get checked over just in case.

There was one other cat missing, however. One warrior was unaccounted for, and this particular cat's absence stood out to the young apprentice.

Where are you, Sparrowthorn?

Ok,so in my hayfever-iduced fever nap I was having recently I had two odd and enticing visions:

• the first was the idea that every year TV stations around the world would perform their maintenance checks on the broadcasting equipment on the same day, but keep the programs on as usual while doing so,and it's a yearly tradition that people around the world would just watch TV all this day and cheer and whoop like a sports game, basically think the veneration given to something like Christmas crossed with the atmosphere of the Superbowl but people are reacting with joy and anticipation at technical issues.

• the second was a sort of song wishing a small inanimate object carried by someone leaving safe travels regardless of where it's going,and the various conditions it has to travel through,rain,sun,snow,war,peace. The object seemed like a metaphor for the person carrying it and it kinda like something The Oh Hellos would sing,or a band who plays similar to them.

I loved @/corvophobia idea that Anastasia also had a braid but I still couldn't capture her exact appearance in my mind before first time drawing her

What do you think about the fact that John made a therapy group and had one of his freinds (seemingly repeatedly) insult the Bruce doll. I find it wild that Jlhn aka Certified Bruce Wayne Simp let Willy into his group or was even his freind.

Personally i think he was using Willy as a pawn but... idk wdyt?

The Purpose of John’s Therapy Group

We don’t know a lot of details about John’s immediate time in the outside world once he was released. All we know is that he was closely associated with Harley who in a way scouted him from Arkham to help with the Pact, and during John’s time on the outside he ‘frequented’ the Stacked Deck. The reason I’m bringing this up is because we need to know ‘Why’ John would make a therapy group. He claims to Bruce that the reason he started the group was so he could share some of the ‘expertise he learned at Arkham’ with them. Now whether he’s being genuine is up for debate.

I believe there are a few ways we could interpret the purpose behind John’s therapy group. Since this scene takes place in the very first episode ‘The Engima’, it plays on our preconceived notions of the Joker. The game tries to get us/Bruce to question John’s intentions, hence the question about whether John would be the type to Kill a man in cold blood, but if we associate John with the typical characteristics of ‘Joker’ the therapy group aspects feels a little more insidious. John was used to having some sense of control when he was in Arkham. He got along with the orderlies and knew the ins and outs of the place as well as being infamous to other inmates. To an extent, John could be trying to emulate that sense of control through this therapy group.

Now I have a billion readings of John’s character from him being a well intentioned but misunderstood dude to a sadistic psychopath but what’s fairly consistent to his character is that sense of control and power he wants over others. These two attributes are what arguably attract him to personalities like Harley and Bruce.

So its not unreasonable to think he would go after vulnerable people like Willy, a man who is a struggling alcoholic, and take advantage of them for his own gain. A detail that is easily overlooked is that John exploits Willy’s alcoholism as a means to get him to participate in the therapy group.

Exploiting Willy’s alcoholism is of course very messed up of John to do since he’s essentially scraping the bottom of the barrel to feel a sense of power and control over someone. So you’re right, he does use Willy as a pawn. (But I’ll get back to that)

Now for the wholesome reason. There is a part of me that believes that there was a well intentioned side to John with this therapy group. John tells Bruce how lost he felt once he no longer had the structure that Arkham provided and it’s possible that he would have wanted to seek out like minded people or at least people in similar predicaments.

If Bruce is kind, compassionate, and gives John the benefit of the doubt, then we see the positive result of that approach with John in the Vigilante route.

During the Boss fight with Bane in this route, Bruce is forced to pick between saving Willy or Agent Harrison from Bane. Here’s Jokers reaction when Willy dies:

Compare this emotional response to Villain Joker’s apathy when he shoots one of his own goons through the head. It’s evident that Vigilante Joker had empathy for him, at least enough for him to be upset by Willy’s death, even if for a moment.

Edit Note: To add, If Batman hesitates and doesn’t save either of the men. Joker uses his grapple to save Willy.

It’s worth noting that the existence of Joker’s team, consisting of Willy, Frank, and Lauren, all three of whom he encountered at the Stacked Deck, suggest that his time at that Bar was spent making a relatively genuine connection with these people which is reinforced when we see how loyal all three of them were to John/Joker.

That loyalty could stem from the fact that Joker gave them a purpose by utilising their skills that otherwise went neglected due to their afflictions— Just look at what Commissioner Gordon shares with Batman about Willy’s past;

“Machinist by trade. With a…storied employment history. He’s been fired from every factory and chemical plant in Gotham. Has a drinking problem, apparently.”

Despite this picture we get of Willy, Batman describes the work he put into crafting Joker’s custom batarang as “remarkable craftsmanship”. A clear sign that he’s a competent person when given the chance to prove himself (via Joker here), and if someone like Willy had been extended a helping hand with his problems earlier instead of thrown out by society and neglected then he’d be in a better position.

These people, like John, were outcasted by society, but have now banded together under a common cause, which is, to get back at Institutions/Authority groups like the Agency, one that preys on vulnerable people like them, for the harm they do. In this sense, I completely understand why John would associate with the guy.

Funnily enough, even in the Villain route, it’s assumed that Joker still kept Willy around as he’s the clown guy that introduces Villain Joker at the start of the episode and he survives the virus bomb since he was supplied a gas mask. Unlike the other henchman who gets his mask torn off by Harley so in both routes Willy does have a valuable part to play in Joker’s plan.

Messing with Bruce

Now I watched this part back a few times and the reason for this really depends on whether or not Bruce places a tracker on John. For this post I’m going with the option where he does track Johns location because there’s more to work with there since we can then assume that John could’ve planned ahead for Bruce’s arrival and set up the therapy circle so that the two things would inevitably coincide.

Why would John do that? Because it was a way to mess with Bruce. Something John does throughout the game.

It’s revealed by John that he’d speculated for some time that Bruce and Batman were the same person and when we consider John from S1 where he heavily implies that he practically knows the man’s identity as the vigilante then what we have here is another example of Johns latent sadism, except it’s enacted through an emotional/psychological sense.

This is Bruce’s reaction as soon as he enters the Stacked Deck and hears Willy yell “Batman!”, it clearly throws him off for a second. If we go back to ideas about power and control, this is arguably the one small sense of ‘power’ John has over Bruce. He would never of course out Bruce but he knows it makes the man nervous and we know this because one of Bruce’s responses to John’s accusation/reveal at the Funhouse in Ep4 is to immediately get defensive and assume he’s about to be blackmailed.

This emotional and psychological game that John plays with Bruce appears again when they’re at Cafe Triste. Maybe it’s just me but there’s a slight emphasis on the word ‘bat’ in Anthony’s delivery. Clearly implying the connection between Bruce and Batman there.

So to answer that last question, yes he was definitely using Willy in that scene as a way to mess with Bruce. On the whole however I personally think Willy’s role far outweighs a pawn and that there’s definitely a more significant aspect to the character.
