they gave my favorite character a closed arc and wrote her out of the story 👍
#(about zero)#i dont mind the transformational character arc i think it fits but i do wish she retained some of her terseness and awkwardness#it was charming i dont think she needed to lose that in order to show how much shes grown…#pouting and kicking the dirt#it just feels like a way of saying ''yeah we are done with zero she has fulfilled her purpose. Back to being irrelevant with ye''#it worked better for meteion. felt more like she had fulfilled her purpose. her exit from the msq was graceful and satisfying#this feels significantly more clumsy. especially because the thirteenth still is nowhere close to being saved!?!?!?!?!#what was the point of all those parallels between zero n her world if you are just gonna drop em at the last second in favor of closing-#-her arc and wiping her clean of her unique character traits. What do they think you cant be a hero and also autistic?#Idk these are only my immediate thoughts and im aware they are influenced by my own biased feelings n opinions#im just smad#and im especially sad cuz i was enjoying it so much until literally the very end. i was 100% onboard with everything but then the ending-#-just had me like ''oh. thats it…?''#but i can forgive them for their transgressions against me if they make an awesome thirteenth expansion (threateningly)#edit: oh also for the record im not inherently against her being written out#id be sad about it either way but my Issue is that i think they dropped the ball on the execution#if they wanna close her book and put it on a shelf im fine with that. however if they wanna toss her book into the trash can and set it-#-ablaze Well i am less fine with that#edit edit: ok i Fully finished 6.5 and its so weird cuz everything else about 6.5 and its ending worked and was perfectly fine imo#but the way they handled zeros character arc ending…i cannot get behind that#my post#personal#ffxiv#endwalker spoilers

hi! i'm caelum. you might know me from @goldentruths-pod or from posting online. im in a financial quicksand pit and i really, really, really need help.
i'm disabled and receive approx ~$950 a month from social security. this has gone from "rough but survivable" when i first started receiving SSI to "i am literally not making ends meet" in 2024. right now my current status is that i am covering my basic needs but any kind of extra purchases are impossible. and the extra purchases i need to make keep piling up because i just can't afford them. some things i need include, in vague level of priority:
dolphin, my cat, is years overdue for a vet visit. this is going to be $300 minimum, possibly more because she has an adversarial relationship with the vet. she needs dental work done which they had quoted me as being $1500 but ive been putting it off for so long that i would not be surprised if that's more expensive too
i have learned today that my gold crown needs to be replaced. really unhappy about this one. it was a miserable experience the first time (everything that went wrong did go wrong, i'll spare you the details) but what is relevant here is that my insurance does not cover this and it was $900 last time. insurance also does not cover extracting the tooth either so that's cool. i have some time before this one is due (my next consult is in july)
my phone is approaching "unusably broken". i've had it for close to 4 years now. the call speaker no longer works (i can only use the phone on speaker mode) and it struggles to run apps or a web browser which makes things like GPS pretty dire. this would be like ~$100-$150 probably, i havent done serious phone shopping yet
my driver's license is expired and i need to get a new one. this was $110 last time. note i havent driven a car in years due to the disability but it's really valuable to have a universally recognized form of photo ID and ive already been hassled over it being expired
god this one is so embarrassing to get into but i had to flee my previous apartment last year due to it escalating into a DV situation. the other tenants did not pay the heating bill, which was in my name (and my dumb ass didnt close the account because it was the middle of february and i didnt want to freeze them to death) so i have a $250 utility bill in collections. i might be able to dispute or debt forgiveness this one but tbh ive been so fucking drained given everything else going on and also my phone barely works so i havent pursued it. especially since i can't afford to pay it if i cant challenge it
i would really like to have a passport again. my previous one was destroyed by my landlord in 2018 but even if it wasnt it'd also be expired now. not sure how much this one costs. likely $200?
my food stamps were slashed in half (covid emergency ending lol) and do not cover my food costs for the month so im paying like $150 a month on food that i didnt have to previously. i can maybe fix this one but im slowly losing my mind from malnutrition from trying to not go into debt and also eat. so i havent had it in me to go 1v1 welfare bureaucracy and possibly make everything even worse
my shoes are probably two months out from fully decomposing. they were $100 three years ago and id like to get something comparable given they lasted me this long
the rest of my clothes are also very literally becoming threadbare, falling apart, or are too big and keep slipping off. i legitimately feel embarrassed to go in public these days because i dress so shitty all the time
insurance doesnt cover my HRT anymore so that's $30 a month i didnt used to have to pay
im sorry this turned into such a ramble. i'm in such a bad way right now, i have been for quite a while and the dental work news is really just the final straw. i can't really have a fundraising goal because due to the SSI asset limit i can never own more than $2000. & i'm aware both that this is the poor people sending each other the same 20 dollars website and that there are people urgently trying to raise money to escape an active genocide. but i held off from making this post as long as possible & idk what else i can do
anyway if theres anything you can contribute to help me i would appreciate it more than anything. at the very least i need to do something about my tooth.

i am not in a Positive Mood atm and so i will be picking a bone with disney because there is one song that has frustrated me since the day i heard it and i vow here and now that one day i will rewrite it and that song is My Once Upon A Time from descendants 3
for context, the song comes right after all of mal's closest friends and her fiance have just been turned to stone. unless she can find a way to turn them back, they are - for all intents and purposes - dead, essentially. and, as she says in the song, its her fault. i dont 100% agree with that, but its not the bit i want to pick at
no, what id like to rant about is the fact that the whole song - the whole song - is her talking about how she needs to fix it because its not how she wants to be remembered. what?! im sorry, her friends have been turned to stone and shes concerned about whether she'll be portrayed as a hero in history books? what the fuck.
allow me to point to a song that achieved exactly what mouat shouldve: the next right thing, from frozen 2. in this song, anna learns her sister is dead, because olaf (who's life relies on elsa) dies in her arms. anna's song shows how she picks herself back up, not for herself but because she has people relying on her who need her. because its the right thing to do. not because she wants to be seen as a saviour, but because she wants to save the lives of everyone still in danger. shes already lost her sister, she doesnt want to lose her kingdom, her people, too.
tnrt in frozen 2 was an impactful and emotional moment. mouat in d3 showed mal brushing off the fact her friends were gone and instead focused on her reputation. and i get it - i get that the whole point of the descendants trilogy was that you get to write your own story, and that nobody is wholly good or bad, and that youre in control of your own decisions and whether they help or hurt - but this should be a moment of pure emotion for mal as she recognises how her own actions have led to the loss of her friends, but that she has to carry on if she ever wants a chance to save them; to save everyone. it should not be focused on her being good for the sake of reputation
and, to add to this, im fully aware that throughout the three movies, we see how mal values other people's perception of her, especially so at the start of d2, and then again at the start of d3 both as her role as future queen, and when she doesnt tell her isle friends that it was her call to keep the barrier closed. shes afraid of how theyll see her, yes, but we had the character growth during d2 where mal became more confident about not fitting with the perfect princess look (represented by her transformation into the dragon, and continued use of such magic despite it coming from her evil mother, as well as her dress changing from auradonion colours to her signature purple), so any insecurities there shouldve been wrapped up. and her lies in d3 were, ultimately, for the good of everyone, and only temporary. the barrier had to stay closed until they could figure out a way for it to be safe for everyone. if she had let them bring down the barrier too soon and a villain had caused chaos, then that would ruin the chances of the barrier ever coming down forever. and if she had told her friends - specifically evie - that it was her call, then she knew that evie would convince her to change her mind. but changing her mind at that point was not for the greater good, therefore she lied. as much as a small amount of it was for her reputation among her friends, it was also for the good of auradon and the isle
therefore i refuse to believe that muoat shouldve been focused wholly on her reputation. we know mal cares so much about her friends and about ben, so why didnt the song dive into that? why were we not looking at her guilt, or her determination to carry on so that she could save her loved ones and her home? why, instead, did we focus so hard on the way she wants to be remembered for her heroics and good deeds?
i also understand that mal may be compartmentalising to an extent, by ignoring her own grief for her friends and instead focusing her attention elsewhere to keep herself going. she very clearly does have insecurities about her decisions and her role in auradon, so it would make sense to distract herself with that rather than letting herself break down over her friends. if this was what they intended, though, i think it was poorly done. at least, i certainly wouldnt have brushed past it quite so nonchalantly. mal hardly seemed to care that her friends had been turned to stone after the first - what - two lines of the song? and even then all she says is that she deserves it. she deserves it?? like it had just been a shove in the playground or something, and not an attack on her loved ones - one that, remember, could very well result in her losing them forever
quite literally, her only lines in the song about losing her friends are: "here you are alone and you deserve it // your friends have turned to stone and thats on you" and that is it. everything else is about her story being written, or about serving a cause, or her reputation not being linked to her parents'
i really do not like this song. i havent watched d3 for over a year, so i do apologise if ive missed/forgotten important context, but from everything i remember and listening to the song itself, i do not believe it does the moment justice. i want to rewrite it one day, ive no idea if i ever will or how, but i dont like it the way it is.

It was a foggy, dark morning last week that we arrived at Southend airport, the early hour adding to the silence that fog seems to encourage. My Mum and I were off for a short break to Luz, in the Algarve and we couldn’t have been more excited. It was the first time we had flown from Southend Airport, and a first time visit to Portugal for both of us, so it was all brand new. Parking the car, we headed for what we thought was the exit in the reduced visibility that the fog provided, relieved to have found it after wandering around the car park twice. The “exit” was actually the security mans gate and office. Opening the gate, expecting to see the walkway to the airport, we instead saw the surprised guard, enjoying hs 5am cup of tea. Asking him for directions, we stumbled back out into the fog, giggling like school girls, finally finding our way out of the car park. A fabulous start. Only we could get lost in a carpark, and find it hilarious. It seems we had set the tone for what became 5 days of fun…… In this post, with my stories, adventures and meanderings reserved for another day, (or we would be here until breakfast) I am giving you the low down, where to stay, eateries and cost guides for a short break in Luz The Algarve. Enjoy!
Where is Luz
Situated on the western part of The Algarve coastline, Luz and its neighbouring villages are small, low key and fairly unspoilt. Traditionally a fishing village, Praia Da Luz’s beaches are sheltered by the huge Rocha Negra basalt headland, creating a peaceful and calm stretch of soft sandy beach. With the cultural town of Lagos just 5km away (15 mins on the bus costing just €1.80) Luz is a fabulous, relaxed base to explore this beautiful side of the Algarve. Its compact, so ideal for a short break. The basalt headland was created 150 million years ago, when extremely hot lava pushed through the red sandstone of The Algarve, creating beautiful headlands striped with colour. At different times of the day these colours appear more vivid or muted, depending  on the suns direction. Simply beautiful and I loved watching them change.
Sadly, many people think of Luz as simply the place that the gorgeous little girl Madeline went missing. That terrible tragedy happened 11 years ago, and of course we remember it. All I can say is that tragedy happens everywhere, and having been in Luz, it seems almost more shocking that it could happen there as it is such a tiny, sleepy little place. Luz is very, very safe and is incredibly popular with young families, couples and older, retired people looking for peace and quiet. It is beautiful.
October finds the beaches pretty quiet
Short Break in Luz The Algarve
Getting there
The fight from the UK to Faro airport, is a fairly short one, with the estimated flight time given as around 3 hours. As I said, we flew from Southend Airport, with Easy-jet, and it was super efficient and stress free. Our flight landed ahead of schedule at about 2.5 hours, so that was great.
Tumblr media
I had carried out some research before hand on how to get from the airport to Praia Da Luz, and it seemed the simplest way was to organise a private transfer. You can get public transport, but it meant a couple of busses, so I decided to make our life easy and book a door to door car for the roughly 1.5 hour each way car journey. There are many companies offering a transfer service, and I went with one called Sunline Transfers, that had great Trip Advisor reviews. It cost around £100 for the return journey, which I know seems a lot, but I wanted peace of mind, and a seamless service. This was what I got and I was very happy with the transfer and care given to us.
Where we stayed
I was in Luz as a guest of travel rentals company of 14 years, Clickstay, who have holiday rental properties (over 60,000 of them) all over the world.  I had met the brand at a blogging event last year, and had stayed in touch with them, so was thrilled and over the moon when I was offered the opportunity to go to Luz and stay in their Clickstay apartment in Luz. Mum came along as my plus one, and as she hadn’t been abroad for almost eight years, it made her year! The apartment that had been made available for us was in walking distance from the beach, on the second floor of a small block of 8 apartments. It was the first time in a long time that I had stayed in an apartment as opposed to a hotel, so I was really looking forward to the flexibility of it.
The view from the front balcony on the apartment
When we let ourselves in through the front door of our temporary home, we were shocked at how huge it was! (If you saw my Instagram stories, you would have seen my apartment tour and the size first hand) Once through the front door you are in a large hallway, with doors to two bedrooms and a bathroom leading off. We also found two foldaway beds, supplied if you need 6 beds, that can be put up in the spacious hall with more than enough room. There is also a set of double doors leading through to the massive lounge, dining area and open plan gallery kitchen. Off of the lounge there is a balcony to the front looking out onto the street and the sea in the near distance, and another balcony looking out over the communal pool. Two further balconies led off from each of the bedrooms. You can imagine all the light and brightness that all these balconies let flood in. Gorgeous. There is also a roof terrace if you want even more choices to enjoy the beautiful Luz weather.
The street that the apartment is located on
The main bedroom is like a suite in itself! I kept losing my Mum (or she kept hiding, you never know with that crazy woman)! You have the large double bed area, with an area leading off where the fitted wardrobes and a changing area are, then leading into a large en-suite bathroom. Talking of bathrooms, both of the bathrooms in the apartment had baths as well as showers, which is unusual in holiday lets. Its usually only a shower, and never two full bathrooms. Heaven for me and my Mum as we both love a bath! It was perfect. The second bedroom was very big, also with fitted wardrobes providing more than ample storage, (we were also pleasantly surprised to find there were plenty of clothes hangers, again, that never happens)!
front room, dining area and kitchen. So much room!
The apartment was spotlessly clean. I have to be honest and say that I am one of those people that check the bed and bathroom as soon as I get in a place, and they were immaculate. We were also amazed at how well equipped the place was. Everything had been thought of from a fully equipped kitchen, large tv with sky, a music system with a selection of cd’s, even a well stocked book shelf with books from all genres. It was fantastic and its those little touches that make you instantly feel relaxed and at home. A folder had also been created with restaurant recommendations, bus time tables, super market information, everything! It was so useful. You even had a car parking space in the private garage below the apartment block for a hire car if you had one. It was perfect!
Tumblr media
A couple of points worth noting is that the apartment would not be suitable for wheelchair users, or perhaps families with babies in prams as you do have two flights of stairs to go up. The stairs are not steep or challenging for anyone without mobility issues, but there is no lift so I need to make you aware of that. Also, the block of apartments is situated on a road that has very small amounts of traffic. We are talking a few cars in what I suppose would be the time locals living in the immediate area are going to work. It is not noisy in any way in the apartment, but if you are outside on the balcony at the front at this time, you will hear the odd car. It is not something that we found troublesome in any way, but you know me, I am always 100% honest with everything I tell you lovely lot, so felt I should say.
The location of the apartment is ideal for exploring Luz, just perfectly placed. The gorgeous beach is just a 5 minute walk down the cobbled streets, and you can walk all the way along the promenade. Little cafe’s and low key restaurants line the sea front, so you can sit and have a coffee (or sangria, I wont judge) as we did every morning, (sangria was afternoon, we are not that bad…) people watching and just enjoying the relaxed and laid back vibe of Luz.
Tumblr media
Where we ate
Now. Let me tell you about the food that the area has to offer. If you like good food, you are in for a treat! There are several really good restaurants very close by. I was in heaven! Portugal is known for its fresh fish, especially sardines (and Portuguese tarts, yum) so there is a huge amount of options for fish lovers. All of the restaurants that I mention here are within a 5 minute walk of the apartment. Iv also given you what we ate, and the price we paid so you have some idea of costs.
Yolo – What a treat this restaurant is, and it is just across the road from where we stayed. It has a real cosy, homely feel to it, with flickering candlelight on every surface and  It was one of the two meals that we went “posh” with, so knew it would be a little more costly. Mum and I both had three courses, and both had two glasses of wine. We both had the most gorgeous fish cakes to start, which were amazing! Then seared, sesame seed crusted tuna steak on green beans for my main, and risotto with mushrooms and truffle for Mum’s main. To finish, I had banoffee pie with the best caramel sauce I have ever tasted in my life, and Mum had creme brulee. This meal came to €70
starter – fish cakes
best caramel ever
Fortaleza Da Luz – I loved this place, and we had three visits to here! Two were just for drinks though so don’t judge….. We decided to go here for our last night as we loved it so much. The building gets its name as it actually is a real, 1600’s fortress!
Tumblr media
Situated right on the headland, overlooking the rugged landscape of the cliffs and gorgeous, uninterrupted views of the sea, its a beautiful spot. The restaurant boasts an open air terrace that makes you feel like you are floating above the sea, and the gardens are filled with colour and native plants. The view is spectacular and Mum and I enjoyed a jug or two of sangria here. They also do events like jazz afternoons that we would have gone to if we had more time.  The inside of the building is just beautiful and you can straight away tell its heritage. The five feet thick walls and the archways within, give the restaurant an ambience that is fitting. We had a two course dinner here, as well as a jug of sangria. Starter was fish soup for Mum, and grilled goats cheese for me, then fish pie for Mum, salmon fillets with vegetables for me. We were full so skipped desert! This meal came to €54
beautiful gardens of the restaurant
PapiPizza – One night, we may or may not have had a few too many cocktails, so ended up with take away pizza from a tiny pizza place just across the road, that we took back to our residence……….. It was the best pizza ever! It cost us just €8  Food that night was a bargain, drink bill not so much……….
Cafe Jasmin – I have to mention this place as it is the cheapest for miles around, but delicious! Its ideal for things like toasted sandwiches, filled croissants, rolls, any cafe type food. It is not posh, but the food was amazing, the staff the friendliest ever, and again, its on the road we were staying on. We had two cheese and onion toasties, two Portuguese tarts and a soft drink each and it came to under €10 for all. Bargain!
Tumblr media
Endless Summer – This little cafe on the promenade overlooks the beach and is the perfect place for a cafe latte and a Portuguese tart. Im not saying it was our usual regular morning spot, but by the end of the 5 days our choice was ready before we even ordered it…. A gorgeous place to while away and hour or two, chatting to the locals and ex-pats that call Luz their home, it was gorgeous. Two coffees, two tarts came to around €9
Ollie’s – Ollie’s is not a restaurant, but a cosy cocktail bar situated just two doors down from where we stayed. It is fantastic, so I had to mention it. Owned by a lovely young man called Ollie (funnily enough) he opened the bar this summer, and we felt he had got the decor, drinks menu and atmosphere just right. It has a rustic, welcoming decor and Ollie and his team are so friendly. As is tradition on holiday, you can even enjoy a happy hour(s) where cocktails are at a reduced price of €5. I can fully recommend the porn star martini’s. I tried a few so I could give you my honest opinion (ahem)….
Tumblr media
So thats it! My guide to the resort of Praia da Luz. I hope you found this little guide useful.  I will cover all of the things that you can do in Luz, the surrounding areas and things in another post. There is so much to tell!
*I was in Luz as part of a press trip for Clickstay, but my opinion, words, photos and experience was all my own.
So, tell me, am I the only person to have not previously discovered the beauty of The Algarve? Has anyone been before? Are you usually in a hotel on trips, or do you like the flexibility of an apartment? Do you think these restaurant prices are pretty reasonable? Do you treat yourself to a few “posh” meals when your on a trip? I have been so impressed with The Algarve, so if you have any recommendations of where else I should go there I would love to hear!
The Lowdown on a Short Break in Luz, The Algarve It was a foggy, dark morning last week that we arrived at Southend airport, the early hour adding to the silence that fog seems to encourage.

By Jeff Clemetson
Dianne Hutchings wants to make sure that La Mesa residents are aware of the El Cajon Animal Shelter where she has worked as an animal care attendant for more than 19 years.
“A lot of people who live in the city of La Mesa who lose their animals, they actually don’t know where to go look for them,” she said. “They don’t know that there is a shelter in El Cajon.”
Not just any shelter, but the one that is contracted by the city of La Mesa to take its strays and relinquished pets.
And thanks to funding from Proposition O, passed way back in 2004, that shelter is soon to be replaced with a larger, more modern facility.
Artist rendering of the northwest view of the new El Cajon Animal Shelter (Courtesy of City of El Cajon)
“We expect the contractors and the architect and the city staff to continue working together to finish up the design by late spring [2017],” said Majed Al-Ghafry, El Cajon assistant city manager and project manager for the new animal shelter. “Construction will start in the summer and the completion is anticipated to be in the late summer [of 2018].”
Right now, the project has finished its feasibility studies and the El Cajon City Council has approved the guaranteed maximum price for the facility — slightly more than $9.3 million — and has authorized the city manager’s office to negotiate the contract with CW Driver to build the shelter. Amanda Shultz of Ferguson Pape Baldwin Architects designed the building.
Although construction for the new facility now has a timeline, Hutchings and the other staff at the animal shelter have been waiting for a long time and point out that other Prop O projects like the new El Cajon police station and fire house are already built and operating.
“We’ve been waiting a long time,” said Cindy Cullinan, Animal Control officer. “We can’t wait to get to the new place.”
An artist’s rendering of the southwest view of the new El Cajon Animal Shelter (Courtesy of City of El Cajon)
Al-Ghafry said the delays are due to an original project idea that had a more regional facility in mind that would be large enough to serve El Cajon, La Mesa, Santee, Lemon Grove and other East County areas. The new site also allows the existing shelter to remain open while the new one is built, saving money that would have had to go toward renting an interim facility.
“The feasibility studies probably took us a little bit longer, but we wanted to do it right. We figured if we wait a little bit longer and do it right, it is better than just go off an idea or a plan that may or may not be the best for us,” Al-Ghafry said. “We wanted to make sure that 10 years down the road, 15 years down the road, people will look back and say, ‘Yeah, you know they did a really good job here. They waited a little bit longer but they didn’t miss much.’”
The existing animal shelter, located at 1275 N. Marshall Ave. in El Cajon, was built in 1957. The aging, 5,900-square-foot, cinderblock building houses up to 103 animals at a time. The new shelter, which will be located just up the street at 1305 N. Marshall Ave., will be 13,500 total square feet when including the play yards and will house up to 190 animals.
In addition to the play yards, the new facility will include a community room that will be used for education; separate dog and cat areas; rooms for the animals with glass walls so they can be showcased for adoption; a full veterinarian center; combo indoor/outdoor cages for dogs; and a separate evaluation area.
“That gives you the ability to come into the sally ports, look at dogs or cats that have health issues or have behavioral issues and treat them in a separate area than where you have your community cats or dogs that are ready for adoption,” Al-Ghafrey said.
Al-Ghafrey visited similar animal centers such as the Humane Society campuses in San Diego and Escondido, the Palm Springs Animal Shelter as well as the county shelter for “lessons learned” in building those facilities and to see what would be helpful to put into the new El Cajon facility.
One idea that came from those trips was to have two entrances — one for adoption and one for intake.
“The intake folks who are giving up their dog or cat, their state of mind is a little bit different than if you are excited about coming to adopt a pet so we wanted to give a dynamic of privacy and respect people’s state of mind,” he said.
La Mesa has contracted to use the shelter for animal care services since 2001, and that contract will continue with the new facility. The city plays a flat fee for each animal that is kept in the shelter. The cost varies per animal but so far the shelter averages around 300 animals per year from the La Mesa, Al-Ghafrey said.
Of those 300 — and of all the animals brought to the shelter — Hutchings worries that some owners might lose their pet just because they are unaware of where to go to look for a lost pet.
“People could come in here two weeks later and their animal could be gone and they wouldn’t even know it was here,” Hutchings said, adding that people whose lost pets end up in the shelter have only four to five working days to come and claim them — after that they are up for adoption.
Cullinan would also like to get the word out about the shelter to all East County and San Diego residents that the shelter also has animals waiting adoption.
“We have people come in all the time saying ‘I never know you guys were here’ from all different parts of town — San Diego, La Mesa, El Cajon,” she said.
Al-Ghafrey is excited that the new shelter will soon be built for the animals that will be housed there and especially for the staff and volunteers who will work there.
“The staff does a fantastic job,” he said. “This is my personal observation. They are all very passionate. They deserve a state-of-the-art building that is going to allow them to do what they really do fully for animal care services.”
