Genuinely curious why someone who seems to sexualize (fictional) serial killers and (fictional) murderers draws the line at "proship" stuff, which is also very much fictional? Aren't most horror characters actively problematic? Or is it virtue signaling with little knowledge of what "proship" actually is, you're just trying to show that you're not like "other" freaks, even if you're cut from the same cloth. Lumping people who ship weird stuff in Fandom spaces in with literal nazis is such a silly take. It just trivializes the sentiment when you say that you believe real life nazis are on par with people who engage with dark topics in fiction. You're a "proshipper" by the very nature of the fandoms you're in, as horror is the most "problematic" a medium there is.

pro shipping is the attempt to normalize things like incest and pedophilia within shipping and fandoms. while yes these characters are fictional, and i completely support the existence of dark content as a medium to explore these topics, my issue is with the fact that proshippers want to treat incestuous and pedophilic relationships as normal. there’s no trigger warnings on proship content, no indication or attempt to keep these things away from those it could harm (pro shipping is also super common in fandoms of kids shows, like steven universe and MLP, which is super worrying for obvious reasons). There’s a difference between writing something dark to explore its existence vs writing about a father raping his young daughter as though it’s a completely normal and healthy relationship. that sort of content pushes the idea that children can consent and want sex, and often pushes blame onto victims of assault. with no tws or any sort of attempts to guard this content, and the fact that the way it’s written actively seeks to normalize these actions, it’s incredibly dangerous.

i expanded more on this sort of idea in this post (and there’s a follow up here if that matters idk), which i highly recommend anyone who’s questioning this sort of thing reads and takes a look at the other things linked in said post, because i do think it’s important to have these discussions. there’s a difference between normalizing and exploration. everything i write has a content/warnings section. i don’t want gore porn to be normalized, which should be inherently clear by the fact that all of my dark fiction has a wide array of trigger warnings on it to make sure no one thinks it’s normal or will accidentally stumble upon it. i’m happy to have my niche little community, but i would never want something so shocking to be easily stumbled upon by someone who didn’t want to see it.

there’s a difference between writing something dark or disturbing while actively advertising the fact that it’s not for everyone, vs posting “ship” art of a child being abused and acting like it’s so cute and perfect. someone who didn’t know better could take that to heart.

sex abuse is real and rampant in our society, and it affects and hurts people every day. that’s different than fake serial killers.

also…i fail to see how having both nazis and proship on my dni is equating them? youre allowed to put whatever you want on your dni. i’ve seen people with “creepypasta fans” right next to “proshippers” on their dni, and i don’t say anything, i just move on. it’s not my business why they don’t want those people interacting with them; maybe it’s because they had a bad experience in that fandom, maybe it’s because they don’t want to see gore, maybe it’s because the stories just unsettle them, why do i care? it’s not a personal attack against me, it’s just their prerogative. it’s not my place to argue with them, they can put whatever they want on their dni and it’s not my place to try and change their mind. they’re not equating or lumping in anything, they just don’t want those people interacting with them. and that’s fair enough.

it’s also a bit of a stretch to call horror a “problematic” medium when the very nature of it is meant to be disgusting and scary. if its disgusts and scares you…..good?

Hello! Well, I'm not an expert or anything, but proshippers usually define being proship as just minding your business and allowing people to ship what they want, without harassing them or saying they're bad people, etc. So, proshippers allow any shipping, as long as it's fictional. While anti-shippers think that fictional problematic ships normalise the horrible things they depict and therefore shouldn't be allowed. Also, not all anti-shippers, but a lot of them are outright pro-harassment of people that ship these things, since when it's the "bad guys", it's OK to harass. There are also neutrals, but for what they stand it's better to ask them, I'm still sort of confused. So, if you want to figure out where you stand, ask yourself these questions:

- Do I think problematic shipping should be allowed, if it's solely fictional? (not YOU personally doing it, but for other people who want to)

- Are the people who like bad things in fiction necessarily bad irl?

- How much does fiction affect reality? (i.e. If romanticised fictional incest, for example, leads to normalisation of irl incest)

- Do I support harassing or at least excluding those people from the fandom?

P. S. Also, if you do come to the conclusion you are proship, be ready for antis to completely misunderstand the meaning of this word and think you literally support child r**e or something. They do that.

Ah, Zutarians criticizing any ship for having any problematic elements (and making them up when they can't find any) only to then take said elements up to eleven in their own fics will never not be amusing to me. Like, buddy, if you want the right to explore any kind of topic/dynamic on your fics without having people assume you authomatically endorse everything you make the characters do, the very least you gotta do is respect that other fans have as much right to do it as you do, and admit that they're not "abuse apologists" just because their pairings had low points.

I used to be completely neutral on Zutara. I could only see them as friends, and quite liked that dynamic, but I had no problem with the ship. Until the shippers started harassing me, the only "criticism" it'd get from me was this:

To me, the ship was bland and only existed because people like the Good Girl X Bad Guy thing - but that was not my fucking problem, and I wouldn't have liked to get unsolicited opinions on why the ships I did like were bad in other people's eyes, so I minded my business.

But after three years of getting asks saying everything from "You should stop writting Zucest and write Zutara instead because I said so" all the way to "Kill yourself since you don't like what I like", seeing my friends be treated the same way, seeing Zutara fans be treated like shit their fellow shippers because they liked Aang and Mai as characters or thought the ship war was pointless and immature, and seeing nearly every fic and meta written by zutarians be wildly out of character and clearly focusing on just praising their own ship while demonizing everything else, I realized that while the ship itself was not a problem, the toxic, spoiled fans sure as hell were.

These people really dig their own graves and then get mad when no one is feeling sorry for them (and in fact side with a "creep" like me instead).

hello, I am a darkshipper/Proshipper. I saw your post asking about proshipping and I'd be glad to share my experiences and thoughts with your questions. (Please mind I tend to ramble a lot so excuse me for that if my message it's too long) So, to answer your questions;

1... What does proshipping (other associated label) mean to you? What do you think proshipping means/is about?

For me, Proshipping means: Anti harrasment/In favor of problematic ships or media. I believe any kind of ship or media, including problematic ones, should be allowed to exist solely inside fiction and only fiction.

Us prosshippers mind our own business, we might not like certain tropes but the deal is that we won't go our way to harass the ones who make those certain tropes we don't like. Its simple as that. Proship is a stance, not dark shipping or comshipping, just a stance/belief. Not the shipping itself.

Also a common myth told by antis is that, "Proshippers DONT believe fiction affects reality!!"- this isn't true at all. Proshippers DO believe fiction affect reality but not on a 1:1 scale. (To put it simply: fiction can affect reality ONLY if you don't know how differentiate both things. Meaning, if you don't know the difference between fiction and reality, of course it's gonna affect you and the way you think..)

Us proshippers don't condone this fictional problematic stuff in Real life. we just understand how fiction works as an outlet and a space for fun and whimsy and joy for those who are excited about their favorite tropes. As long as they don't harm anyone IN REAL LIFE, why should we go after them...?

and now, for Darkship or "Darkshipping" it's obvious definition means, extremely problematic and taboo things that'd be considered illegal in real life. Including, incest, minor x adult, abuse x victim (toxic relationships), etc. However, this tropes are obviously just meant to stay in fictional settings whether its for an outlet or simply exploring dark media and I don't agree with these tropes IN REAL LIFE.

I believe in the proship label because it makes a lot of sense to me. I understand if people tend to get disgusted by problematic pairings but I don't find it reasonable to go after those people who make those certain pairings (like antis). However, if that person who makes those certain pairings DID harm a REAL child or person, then I would understand coming after them.

But aside of all that, I've never understood this logic that <just because you indulge in a certain "trope" you immediately are "supporting" that trope in real life!!> (like antis think). That's like saying playing violent games immediately makes you a killer💀🙏

I was never an anti to begin with, i tried to act like anti and their mindset but it never felt logical to me. I didn't know about this ideology of proshipping until much later, and ever since then, I sticked with it.

And for Darkshipping, I found out about this label after I realized my whole entire life (since I've been in fandoms) I've been shipping yandere x victim tropes, one sided-obsession, stalker x victim, etc. (YES and I still do), and when I realized how much it matched the darkshipping definition, I came into terms that I indeed, had "problematic interests". Obviously in fictional setting.

The main reason I decided to stick with this label it's because I simply just felt like it connected to me. I darkship because I use it as a coping mechanism.

3. did you use to be an anti? How did the controversy surrounding this belief affect you personally?

like I said before, no. I never was anti to begin with. Yes, I did try to adapt to their mindset and all, but deep down it just felt wrong and never understood the logic behind it. This belief led me to feel a lot of low self esteem and shame to myself because I geniunely believed their words that <"I was supporting these things in real life and that I am a bad person for it and should go to hell for it"> It's really much, in my own experience, a toxic mindset.

It affected me because Darkshipping it's my way of coping. Not everyone has the same coping mechanisms, but Darkshipping truly has helped be aware of my own trauma and how to deal with it... it's hard to explain cause I don't wanna go to detail about it.. but for a long time It just felt so wrong because of the amount of anti ideology I was surrounded with, I geniunly thought i was a bad person.

4. Has being a proshipper positively affected your life? Or so, how?

Yes, both proshipping and darkshipping.

Proshipping because their stance and belief of fiction just feels like less judgemental and less toxic. (Yes we have to be aware that some people who use the proship idelogy in the proship community, will use it to be creeps, but there's also creeps in the anti community. ) and there's barely any proshippers like that. We just see fiction as a space for freedom and not as a space for purity and whatever antis want it to be.

Darkshipping, has helped me a lot positively. This answer might be controversial and that's fine if ppl don't agree with it, but it's my TRAUMA and my FEELINGS and nobody has the right to tell me how to cope with it. I have a therapist and she agrees with my ways of coping.

As someone who used to be in both sides of a toxic relation, I've learned how to treat others better and have healthy attachments, and how to let others treat me better and have self-respect with myself. Darkshipping is both an outlet and way of realizing things about my trauma. And Proshipping is simply a stance I totally stand by it.

It has helped my mental health and the way I see myself better, because I know it's just a way cope and nothing else. After all, I keep it to myself, it's fiction, and I have common sense to differentiate both reality and fiction.

3. What's an inherently problematic view your character holds

"if it doesn't concern me, then i have no business getting involved." this is something that i've thought about a lot - ashton is selfish. very selfish. it's one of their worst traits, and i can see this line of thinking being inherently problematic because ashton has turned their back on so many horrible things.

a contractor wants me to kill this person? fine, it's not like i knew them anyways. they have a family? not my problem. despite the fact that they advocate for a much less government-controlled world, it's mostly done out of self interest rather than something they do for the greater good. they are only seeking revenge, and they are willing to rip apart potential allies if they start getting in the way of their own goal.

7. Do you ever think that despite your muses actions/morality they do have a point when it comes to their reasons?

honestly when it comes down to it, the only reasonable thing that i can think of is ashton wanting full eradication of the world nobles. nobody should hold enough power where they can freely enslave people without any kind of repercussions. given their own history with being enslaved and being forced to endure the cruelness of celestial dragons, their views are understandable at the very least.

10. Is a healthy relationship (platonic or otherwise) possible with your muse?

platonically? absolutely! when it comes to friends, ashton is nothing but supportive. they know when to draw a line and being their friend is probably one of the safest routes to go with them in terms of relationships.

when it comes to romantic or otherwise intimate relationships, that's where things get a bit... tricky.

i'm sure if it came to the right person, there's a chance that they could have a healthy relationship, but ashton has a very bad habit of borderline worshiping their lover like a personal god. any morals for them go out the window when it comes to romantic relations. oh, someone talked badly about x? i'll just kill them then. or alternatively: if x wants me to do y, i see no issues with it, no matter how immoral it might be.

it's deeply, deeply unhealthy and is probably a big reason why i don't find myself actively seeking out romantic ships. i'm not against them! but ashton has such a twisted view of intimacy that i can't imagine them being remotely healthy unless a healthy dynamic is specifically discussed with me.

Please take the time to read this post in its entirety and truly reflect on the message I am trying to send before commenting. My goal is to use my background in Gender and Women’s Studies to deconstruct the comments I have seen on Tumblr and Twitter and bring awareness to the ACOTAR fandom.

The reason I am tagging “Elriel” in this post is to call attention to the arguments in the Elriel fandom that: weaponize Elain’s femalehood to shame real life people for their opinions about Elain’s character and her relationship with Lucien; victimize Elain’s character in fandom discussions; and coddle Elain’s character, which limits fandom discussions about her narrative development and prevents the ACOTAR fandom from holding Elain accountable for her actions and inactions in the same way that the fandom holds other characters accountable for their actions and inactions. It is for these reasons that I WILL NOT remove the “Elriel” tag from this post because all of the above points contribute to the toxic discourse surrounding Elain’s character.

I urge those who use these arguments to understand their implications, why they are problematic, regardless of intent, and reexamine their contributions to the ACOTAR fandom. I WILL NOT tolerate anyone who tries to twist my words and say I am attacking people and their personal shipping preferences. In fact, I AM CRITIQUING THE ARGUMENTS THEMSELVES NOT THE PEOPLE USING THE ARGUMENTS.

Also, I highly encourage the Elriel fandom to read this post because it addresses how the concept of choice as an argument enables arguments to exploit social justice and feminist languge in order to vilify Elucien shippers, among other problematic things.

Antis claiming they’re feminists when in reality they hate on Elain and Feyre but love Nesta

Elain antis are such sore losers. Y’all were that bunch of people who could not get over being rejected from hanging out with the cool kids so y’all are projecting your hatred towards pretty people now to get validation

He doesn’t bother to look past what’s on the outside to see her for who she is. And Elain is obviously repulsed by the idea that she should belong to anyone or have no choice in who she can be with. Azriel is her friend and the only person who sees her quiet strength. He has so much faith in her, in her abilities; he’s the one who kept her company when no one else did, he’s the only one who bothered to see her for more than her brokenness. You’re going to tell me you still prefer Elucien over Elriel?

The more I see Gwynriels that ship Elucien out of their hate for Elain, the less I can understand Elain stans that ship Elucien. Pls Elain has made it very clear that she doesn’t want Lucien, why would you ship her with him? Do you hate her too? Smh

The real question would be, if you care and understand Elain why would you ship her with Lucien (where she canonically shrinks when he is near)?

Arguments in the Elriel fandom normalize and promote performative feminism because the topic of feminism is only referenced when discussing Elain. This indicates that these arguments are engaging in disingenuous discourse to push a personal agenda within the ACOTAR fandom, and it becomes more apparent when they use white feminist tactics to shut down opposing viewpoints:

It’s clear that SJM set up the ACOTAR world to mirror a patriarchal society, and that the imbalance of power between males and females stems from sexism. Arguments in the Elriel fandom analyze the ACOTAR world through a feminist lens to show how ACOTAR’s patriarchal society, to which the mating bond is innately tied, contributes to female oppression and limits their agency. When choice and free will are emphasized as part of Elain’s arc, they imply that Elain, through the mating bond, experiences female oppression under ACOTAR’s patriarchal society because of her identity as a female with that identity being the focal point of her oppression in the world. Elain is one of the most privileged characters in the ACOTAR world: she’s High Fae; she’s the sister of the High Lord and High Lady of the Night Court, which gives her access to wealth and political influence because of that connection; she’s able-bodied; she was magically blessed by the Cauldron; and she lives in Velaris, a place that grants females autonomy and power because of the beliefs of Rhysand and Feyre. Arguments in the Elriel fandom trivialize female oppression in the ACOTAR world because they disregard the fact that Elain’s privileges prevent her from experiencing female oppression in the same way that other marginalized females in the world do. The mating bond being one such example because those around Elain are not forcing the bond on her, instead they’re allowing Elain to reach a decision about the bond for herself; a privilege that other marginalized females in the world probably wouldn’t have. Just because Elain has endured hardships in her life and is a female in a patriarchal society, they do not erase the privileges she holds within the ACOTAR world. The failure to include Elain’s privileges in discussions about Elain being a female in a patriarchal society feeds into white feminist ideologies because white feminism operates from a very narrow perspective; it doesn’t take other intersecting identities into account when it examines gender oppression, leaving no room for discussions about privilege (or lack thereof) in relation to those intersecting identities. When discussing oppression in hierarchical societies, it’s imperative that privilege is also included in the conversation because privilege and oppression are not mutually exclusive; they equally affect the ways in which people navigate those societies through their social identities.

Rather than attributing Elain’s uncomfortability to her new life as a Fae female or the mating bond itself and her trauma to the Cauldron, the King of Hybern, or Ianthe, they’re placed on Lucien to cast his character in a negative light. Moreover, fandom discussions portray Lucien as a possessive character to further emphasize Elain’s discomfort despite the inaccuracy of this characterization in canon. Arguments in the Elriel fandom play into racial biases when it comes to Lucien (a male character of color) because they mischaracterize his character in order to victimize Elain (a white female character), placing her character in the role of the white damsel in distress. In Western society, the concept of womanhood has been conceptualized from a Eurocentric perspective with femininity and feminine attributes favoring white women. It’s the idea that a certain type of femininity is only inherent to white women as they are seen as the embodiment of an ideal womanhood. White womanhood has been a symbol of innocence and purity, and white women have been viewed as fragile beings in need of protection. The reason white womanhood functions within white supremacy is because it’s the same idea that has motivated white men to kill and beat black and brown men. The so-called protection of white women has been used as a justification for the horrific violence committed by white men because black and brown men were stereotyped as aggressive and seen as a threat to the virtue of white women. The white damsel in distress trope considered white women as worthy of protection because of their perceived innocence and purity; women of color were not granted that same treatment because they did not fit into the ideal image of womanhood. Over the years, this trope became a means for white women to exercise limited power in a patriarchal society with white women weaponizing their status as the damsel much to the detriment of black and brown men. It’s through the white damsel in distress trope that white supremacy sustains its dominance in Western society. The misrepresentation of characters of color in fandom, the dismissal of their importance to the overall story, and using them as tools in arguments centered around white characters are the foundation of fandom racism; they’re examples of how racism moves silently in fandom spaces. Instead of examining their behavior and taking constructive criticism from fans of color, white fans will often double down on their bigotry and center their uncomfortability in the conversation when confronted with their complicity in fandom racism. White fans expect fans of color to swallow fandom racism in its many forms in order to not ruin the experience of fandom, dismissing the fact that racism is prevalent in nearly every aspect of society. This mentality ensures that no one is held accountable for the harm they caused and alienates fans of color in fandom spaces.

To reiterate what I mentioned in my first think piece: terms like “oppression”, “the right to choose”, “feminist”, “feminism”, “anti-feminist”, “anti-feminism”, “internalized misogyny”, “misogyny”, “misogynist”, “sexist”, “sexism”, “racist”, “racism”, “classist”, “classism”, “discrimination”, and “patriarchy” are all used in specific ways to draw attention to the plight of marginalized people and challenge those who deny the existence of systems of oppression. Yet these words and their meanings can be twisted to attack, exclude, and invalidate people with differing opinions on any given topic. When social justice and feminist terms are thrown around antagonistically and carelessly to push a personal agenda, it becomes clear that these terms are being used to engage in disingenuous discourse and pursue personal validation rather than being used out of any deep-seated conviction to dismantle systemic oppression. Being an ally, activist, or feminist is not an identity, it’s a practice. It requires: ongoing self-reflection; holding ourselves accountable; listening to marginalized people; educating ourselves; dismantling implicit biases; challenging those around us who are exhibiting problematic behaviors; and action behind our words.

It’s important to be aware of the language that is used within the fandom when defending or critiquing characters and ships. It’s also important to question how an argument is framed and why it’s framed the way that it is to critically examine the intent behind that argument: is it used as a tool to push a personal agenda that reinforces problematic behaviors, or is it used as an opportunity to share, learn, enlighten, and educate?

Ranting because of toxic people in fandom

You know, I'm pretty chill most of the time. I like to let people do what they do, but right now I'm just annoyed.

For the love of god, if you don't like a goddamn ship, that's fine. I couldn't give two shits if someone doesn't like my preferred ships. The problem I have is the people who try to police the fandom, who bully others for shipping something they consider problematic.

You think you're doing something, but you're actually just making fandom a toxic and unpleasant place.

I know comprehension is difficult for some of you, but let us look at some facts:

1) What a person chooses to ship has absolutely zero effect on you personally. You're choosing to take offense because you've somehow decided something that is absolutely none of your business is your business.

2) Learn to separate fiction from reality. Just because someone likes a certain ship doesn't mean they support pedophilia/incest/whatever. You putting those labels on the people who do is not only insulting but also extremely hurtful. As someone who was sexually assaulted repeatedly when I was five years old, I know what's right and what's wrong. You need to think because you start throwing these buzzwords out, and you literally don't even care about what you're doing to the person behind the screen. You are not special. You are not right even if you think you are.

3) You're literally not going to change anyone's minds. All you're doing is creating a hostile environment. Mind your own fucking business and focus more on what you love instead of what you think it's okay to abuse other people over. If you love abusing and gaslighting people, then perhaps you should question why you feel the need to act as if you're somehow superior. Newsflash, you're not. You're nothing more than a jerk.

4) I'm not a fan of some of these "problematic" ships, but I don't feel the need to attack people because, once again, this is fiction. Get your narcissistic, attention-seeking behavior away from everyone else. It's literally not harming anyone. At all. You're just looking for a reason to be big-time offended because you're somehow lacking something else in your life, and I'm fairly certain most of you wouldn't have the courage to say this shit to someone's face. Just because you think these ships are problematic doesn't mean they are.

5) Let's take a minute to look at Rexsoka (because I happen to like that ship). You're getting bent out of shape and acting like Ahsoka is 14 throughout all of Star Wars. Maybe this hasn't occurred to you, but Ahsoka ages. Like we literally see her in her 30s in Rebels. I didn't even consider shipping it until I saw the last four episodes of Clone Wars. If you're going to freak out over the age difference between Ahsoka and Rex, let's try to remember that Anakin is five years younger than Padme. (My mom was nine years younger than my dad and they were married for 42 years before she passed away.)

Like just leave people alone. Let them like what they like. This isn't a difficult fucking concept. If they're two consenting adults, then stop getting bent out of shape. You honestly look like a damn fool to those of us with comprehension skills and who understand the passage of time.

Ships can be platonic or romantic or both.

There's fictional ships and non fictional ships too. You ship two people you want to be in a relationship or who already are in a relationship or who you suspect to be in a relationship- perhaps due to queer baiting, ship baiting, romance baiting etc.

In the shipping fandom, there are two sects of people. Those who are Proships those who are Antiships- antis are ironically considered part of the shipping community because for some reason they are always in shippers business💀

Antishippers are those who oppose a particular ship or shipping in general (more on that later.)

Proshippers are well- Pro ships.

Pro-Ship

A term mostly used in fandoms, but can stretch outside of this to include original characters. The core belief is that shipping two fictional characters, no matter if they are family, share ages gaps, considered to be unhealthy, or show blatant signs of being abusive or other generally unsavory behaviours, are valid in a fictional setting.

Pro-Shippers or "anti-antis" are also known as "rainbow meaties" and will use 🌈 + 🍖 emojis together often in their bio on twitter or other social media platforms- usually within fictional settings.

These shippers reinforce the idea fiction is separate from reality and shouldn't be confused with the other.

‘Anti’ is short for ‘anti-shipper’ or ‘anti-[ship]’.

Shipping non-fictional individuals is a subset of Proshipping, in my opinion, known also as alternative shipping- as far as my knowledge on it goes.

As with fictional shipping, alt ships have their antis too. People who disagree with shipping real couples in a romantic way for whatever arbitrary moral reasons they have and who feel entitled to go out of their way to correct, stop, police and punish such shippers.

Then there are those who although may be pro real people shipping think they have the right to tell others how they should ship and to what extent they can ship.

Others too prefer to ship real people platonically because they view romantic shipping of real people as problematic.

So to answer your question on Anon's post- there is no such thing as a Proshipper who is also Anti shipping. Thats oxymoronic. Perhaps they might be platonic shippers who are anti romantic ships but not necessarily romantic shippers themselves.

I don't think there's anything wrong with preferring to ship platonically. It is when they assume by virtue of their false sense of moderacy that they are better than others that shit starts to get funny.

There are a lot of anti shippers moonlighting as shippers in this fandom. It's fascinating.

Personally I think those people are either confused or their desires to appeal to other Anti shippers must have morphed their brains into ass dick hybrids.

Anti shippers in general are notorious gatekeepers, gaslighters, bigots, high key sanctimonious and often have a cis white westernized sense of morality and ethics through which they fliter others and expect everyone and everything to conform to.

Within shipping, there are those who are Proshipping yet anti certain ships. Most Tuktukkers are anti Jikook. And assume anyone who isn't a tuktukker is equally anti Tae Kook and so go ahead and exhibit anti behaviours towards them.

Think of such groups of shippers as Proshippers with a preference for particular ships if you will.

There are Pro shippers who also feel some kind of way about Shipping real life people or alt shipping.

I think for as long as I can remember, I've always been a proshipper and I ship both platonically and romantically, fictionally and alternatively💀

I don't really know why people make a big deal of it or try to demonize the concept of shipping as if it were something strange or mysterious- just keep your moral values to yourself. I am not your mother's daughter. we were not raised in the same households.

Then again I think it all depends on the different cultures and social backgrounds we all come from and how entitled, supremacist or imperialist they are.

For Yoonmin, I shipped them romantically but didn't think they were a real couple at all. I just romanticized their interactions and found humor in it. At the back of my head I was expecting them each to one day find husbands or wives and go their merry ways and even harbored the thought they each could very much be in serious romantic relationships with others.

In similar ways, I shipped Minimoni and Vmin.

You can ship a pair romantically and not think at all that they are actually REAL.

A lot of jokers ship Jikook romantically and don't assume they are real. Just as a lot of people shipped say Elena and Stefan romantically even though Paul was married.

Some shipped Elena and Damon too due to their unscreen chemistry and even felt they could be a thing- that was before later it was revealed they had started dating in real life. Even that I was holding on to my Bonnie x Damon fantasies because Bonnie was my bias and I shipped her with everyone romantically- of course I didn't expect any of those ships to manifest into something because it was the character I was shipping not Kat herself. To this day I still love her onscreen chemistry and friendship with Damon and don't see how people could wish for it to be more than that😭

It was beautiful as is. Not everything should climax into sexual intercourse.

But if I felt at some point any of her ships had crossed into alternative ships I would have jumped on those and supported it whole heartedly.

If you assume a pair are a real couple and dating in real life that's alt shipping- a lot of alt shippers suspect a ship is real and that's why they ship them.

You have absolutely great takes so I wanted to know your opinion about the entire way Sunrise dealt with the execution of the sequel, because something doesnt exactly make sense to me - it's either Sunrise were hilariously disconnected from reality or they just didnt care; WHY would they even make an entire sequel dedicated to one problematic ship that isnt even liked by the majority of the fandom (SessRin) , while basically shitting all over the most popular one (Inukag) ? What did they think would happen? xD Why would their sequel EVER be accepted with no issues with decisions like that?

I'm glad you think so well of my takes, querent! I don't personally think they're particularly insightful, but that's probably because they're native to my head, and might be obvious to me, but not anyone else.

On why Sunrise could have thought HNY as it came out was any kind of a good idea, the way I see it, there are a couple of possibilities. The first is just plain incompetence. We know that the lead writer of the show has a... bias toward these relationships, to put it nicely, and that he and his allies in the company have been trying to cultivate the audience's sensibilities in that direction for many years as well. They could genuinely have thought they had succeeded in convincing all of us to support the ship, leading to a bungle.

The second possibility, however, is that the show was calculated to be unpalatable or cause an uproar. That might SEEM counterintuitive from this side of the problem, because we as fans tend to think our tastes need to be catered to, or at least soothed, in order for our viewership to be secured. I myself thought at the beginning of this debacle that Sunrise would have to tiptoe around the issue to maintain as much of the audience as possible. Why would anyone accept an addition that twisted and ruined their favorite media?

But with more and more outright insulting remakes/sequels coming out that seem to miss the point entirely or even make a mockery of elements of stories beloved by fans, I'm starting to think it's all done on purpose. Sunrise is one thing, but DISNEY does this a lot, and never seems to flinch at the backlash. You'd think by now these companies would figure out what they've been doing wrong and fix it, but that's only if they've been doing things WRONG by their measurements.

Research has been coming out recently that suggests we engage more with content on social media that pisses us off than the stuff we actually like. Incendiary posts spread like wildfire and produce arguments miles long because denouncing things that are distasteful and offensive to us has become the core of internet existence. This is especially exacerbated regarding content to do with identity and affirmations of such: race, creed, sex, orientation, political affiliation, and yes, fandom.

We engage with fiction that really appeals to us on the level of identity, because the whole reason we get into it in the first place is we see something in it that we identify with. Something deeply personal stands out to us in it, intended by the creator or not, and we adopt it as a part of us and a reflection of who we are. We buy merchandise and consume new content as a way to reaffirm our affinity for the aspects of the media we have internalized. We OWN it; it is OURS.

So it feels personal whenever someone says something disparaging toward our favorite media. It feels even MORE personal when an official source of content contradicts the source material and the way things were understood by ourselves and our community, or presents an immoral twisted picture of it. We rage against anything that hurts the image of the source material because it's also OUR image, and we have to defend it as part of ourselves. Out comes the disavowal, the vocal rejections, the attempts to shame and withdraw support from the company. And this of course bumps up engagement and the numbers for the content and studio.

Online, attention is currency, and getting the most attention often means raising a LOT of ire and tempers over hot-button issues. It's just good business sense to troll away and make people angry these days.

As conspiratorial as it might seem, I think there's a good chance HNY was written for the algorithm rather than to actually appeal to an audience. Considering how Sunrise has yet to actually give development and definition to the controversial pairing in question, and their affiliate manga artist characterized the show as one of many possible futures, they're not really endearing themselves to the shippers anymore either. That might change in the second season, if they're willing to risk their distribution deals and such, but if not, I'd say universal frustration might have been the goal.

Whatever gets the outrage points, I guess.
