I saw an advice list from another writer on tumblr, fml I'll find and tag them if I can, and one of the things they said was to avoid colored text because of this exact reason!

I had two people ask for some advice on starting up/running a blog, so I thought I’d make a little post for anyone else looking for advice! There’s no one right way to run a blog and I am by no means an expert. This is just a compilation of some of the things I’ve learned :) 

Feel free to add advice to this!

- The first thing is something I cannot stress enough. Write for yourself first. You will be absolutely miserable if you’re only writing for attention. I’m not saying it’s easy, but it’s so incredibly important. If you don’t like a prompt, fandom, or scenario? You don’t have to write for it! A personal example: I’m a theatre kid and total musical nerd. I could probably write some compelling Dear Evan Hansen or Hamilton headcanons if I wanted to, but I don’t. That’s fine! I’m allowed to say I won’t write for it and deny prompts/requests for those fandoms. 

- Set boundaries. This is a very mixed community with all sorts of creators and participants with hands in different baskets. Don’t want minors to interact? Put minors DNI in your bio. SFW only? Put it in the bio. No RP? Bio. This goes for private conversations/askbox/other interactions as well. If someone comes into your askbox/dms and says something that makes you uncomfy, shut it down. 

- My advice is more geared towards writing than art or video, but I suppose you could apply this advice as well. Make what makes you happy! If you’re only in one fandom, feel free to stay there and make content for it. Multi-fandom? Excellent! Completely non-fandom? Epic! Make the content that you want to see and the content that makes you happy to create, especially if you’re in a more niche fandom/area. 

- Organization. ...I��ll admit this one is more of a personal pet peeve than something urgent, but it is something that people positively respond to. If you have some sort of consistency/organization to your blog, it’ll make it easier and more enjoyable for people to navigate. Make a fandom list/indicate your fandoms somehow (mostly for prompt purposes. people can’t read your mind, so it’s important to tell them what you will write for and what you won’t, however you want to do that)! 

Make a masterpost/link your fic tag! Use a fic tag of some kind. Give your fics summaries and leave a little bit of the fic above the ‘read more’ to intrigue folks (look at #my fics and my masterpost for basic examples of how I do this, if you need!). Use read mores. Please use read mores (if you can, idk if they’re on mobile. regardless no one wants to encounter a three thousand word block of text on their dash). (No seriously though, organize your blog, even if it’s super simple. literally just a ‘mine’ or ‘my fics’ or ‘[pseud] writes’ and a fandom tag. It’ll make it easier for people to find your stuff and support you)

- Practice general internetiquette. Please remember that the people in this community are real people with feelings, boundaries, and lives outside of the blog that they run. Be genuine and people will respond to you! Don’t manipulate people into likes/reblogs/attention. No one wants to be on the other end of that. Being in this community isn’t a transaction or a mosh pit, it’s an experience.  

- Be ever-so-liberal with the block button. Someone’s user makes you uncomfortable? They give you bad vibes? They’re a minor/older than you and you don’t want them interacting with your content? You don’t wanna see their blog for some reason? Block em. This goes for anons too. That’s what the button is for. Don’t feel guilty for using it. Use it. 

- How you write is 100% a personal choice and not really something that I can give advice on, but embrace your style! take prompts if you want, or don’t. Write oneshots, series, drabbles, or novels. Write romantic, or don’t. Etc. Change things up if you feel like it. Do what you want. Your blog, your style, your rules. 

- Numbers matter. Don’t let them define you. This is a bit of a harder one to explain, but I will try. I often say that I don’t care about numbers, and I really don’t, but that’s not to say that I don’t see them and they have zero effect on me. I absolutely notice and am bummed if a fic doesn’t get notes, or at least the notes that I was expecting. That is entirely normal and okay to experience. What isn’t okay, though, is creating for the sake of getting notes/numbers/attention (re: write for yourself first, internetiquette). If you find yourself relying on tumblr for gratification and a reward, I implore you to take a break. I’m not your therapist or your parent, I’m not gonna tell you what to do, but when you make things only for the sake of notes, people notice. Celebrate your milestones. Know that it’s okay to be bummed about low notes/celebrate getting plenty. Just make sure that you don’t depend on the numbers for your happiness, or you will be miserable.

- You’re (probably) doing this for free. You are providing people content: a service. Produce as much or as little as you’re comfy with, but always remember that. No one is entitled to what you make. If someone asks you for headcanons, sends a prompt when prompts are closed, etc, and you don’t feel like fulfilling it? You have no obligation to do that. Getting commissioned is another story entirely, but as long as you’re making free content, you have zero obligation to do anything for anyone and certainly no time constraints. It can take me months to finish prompts, and that’s okay. I do them when I do them and I fill them how I want to. If my prompts are closed, I deny new ones until I’m ready to accept them. Make yourself happy first.

- How you interact with others is up to you! It’s generally considered good practice to like/reblog your mutuals fics/art, but this is not necessarily a hard and fast rule. I veeeeeery rarely reblog fics for fandoms that I’m not in, even from my mutuals. What you can do to show your support (and you should try and show support somehow. No one is in competition. Everyone’s in your boat, whether they have no followers or 1k) is send an ask/reply to the post/leave tags to let the author know you liked it. Like the fic and don’t reblog it, if you don’t want to. Just make sure you show your mutuals (and others in general!) roughly the same support they show you, however you decide to do that. Treat others how you want to be treated, as cheesy as it sounds :)

- Don’t repost content that isn’t yours without express permission from the original creator, and credit them appropriately. If you see a cute piece of tickle art and the artist doesn’t want it reposted? Don’t repost it. Don’t post fics/videos/gifs that aren’t yours (obviously if it’s like a scene from a movie/a clip on youtube that’s different, but don’t take credit for things you didn’t make, including ideas). Can’t tell you how frustrating it is to have work stolen from you. Don’t be that person. ‘Credit to original artist’ and ‘credit unknown’ is total bullshit btw. Link/tag the creator in the original post and make it clear you don’t own the content. Best practice is to ask the original creator if they’re okay with reposting, work inspired by or connected to theirs, etc. This goes doubly for saving/downloading someone’s fics. 

- It is not illegal for a minor to have normal, nonsexual, healthy friendships with people older than them. There’s a weird attitude that minors have nothing of value to offer adults besides a relationship/sex, which is...not true? Minors are thinking, living human beings with feelings, thoughts, and opinions. You can talk to them like normal people, because they are. Just obviously don’t talk about/introduce sex or endanger them. Minors don’t bring up sex/activities you’re underage for with an adult. IDK this isn’t a seminar just...don’t be weird. Adults can offer great life experience, support systems, and the basic joys and needs of human connection. Minors can too. Mind your business unless someone’s actually in danger. The next point is a caveat, though: 

- If you’re a minor, don’t interact with NSFW blogs/blogs with ‘Minors DNI’, NSFW blogs don’t interact with minors, etc etc. Not your parent or whatever but this is pretty common sense and it’s for everyone’s safety, but especially the NSFW person. internettiquette!

- If you use your TK blog as a side blog (meaning you have another blog as your main blog, not two separate accounts) and don’t want your main exposed, that is up to you. I recommend not liking posts. Also, follow people that you trust. These actions route through your main blog and your main will show up in the notes. You can reblog from a sideblog. If you want to send an ask “as your tk blog”, send an anon and sign it somehow, like ‘hey :) // @/tickle-bugs’. It should tag you in the post so you get a notification when it’s answered!

- Find your people! As an anxious person this one has been hard for me, so I know it’s hard for a lot of people. Fandom is literally a community of shared interest. Peachy and I have an iron bond almost two years later and we met talking over shared interests. You can absolutely find your people here. If someone makes you happy, strike up a conversation! Send an ask! You never know what doors it might open or whose day you might improve :)

- If you were an anon/lurker on someone’s blog and they inspired you to write/submit/start your own, sign your messages!! the common form that I see is either an emoji or [noun/context of the ask]!anon (prodigal!anon (i miss u every day), butterfly!anon, etc.) Let us know how to find and support you!! Those messages produce good brain juice. 

- The big finale: Have fun. If you’re not having fun here, maybe you could tweak something to make things enjoyable. Running a blog is like driving a car. Keep your hands on the wheel, respectfully indicate your intentions (flashing lights optional), and be safe. Poebody’s nerfect, y’know. If you make a mistake, course correct. I’m by no means perfect. Your favs aren’t either. Just do your best and have a good time :)

Hello lovely! I've only been here like a year and I'm not that big as others yet, but I've learned a few things since starting that can maybe help you.

- Use the hell out of the hashtags when tagging your fics, tag as many as you can with what you think people will search for most that pertain to your fic like if you were writing a kook fic: #jeon jungkook #jungkook #jungkook fanfic, use as many hashtags as tumblr allows

- make a spiffy banner for your fics! Make something eye catching, or really sexy or dark. I use the apps Over and Adobe lightroom on mobile but photoshop for desktop. Details and a nice color palette seem to really matter to people.

-make stories that people will remember and come back to. Throw something wild into your fic, if you write smut throw a not so common kink in there or an exciting place or concept. The more wild, the more intrested people will be.

-the fic itself is the biggest way to gain followers. Grammar is important to some people, when I first started I got roasted and bullied a lot because of my grammar and stuff. English isn't my first ever language even though now I'm completely fluent in it, I still know a few languages and get confused and misspell things sometimes. Just make sure you read over your writing or have a friend help. Detail, dialogue and emotion, these really help. You can really make readers feel like they're watching a movie instead of reading if you add enough of these things. Use your five senses to explain stuff, make people laugh or cry with something someone says or does.

-make teasers and tag it with your fic tags as if it were a fic itself. You can release the teaser like even a week before and pin it so anyone who visits your blog will see it. You have to make people want to read it before they ever actually do. People might follow just to read your story you're coming out with soon, so that's a good way to gain more. Having a masterlist in your description thingy is super important and also something I admittedly struggled with when I first started.

-ask games and drabble games. When you get an okay amount of followers these are important to keep them satisfied. They like when you do things for them, like reaction/headcanon things or writing something just for them that they requested. I kind of see myself as an entertainer and not just a writer, for me it's important to keep people entertained when you have a few. That can draw people in because they'll think you're fun. I'm not saying pretend to be someone else, I'm saying that you're a really fun, sweet and lovely person, so show people that. Don't be discouraged if people don't engage sometimes or at first, sometimes people still don't with me, people can be shy, even on anon.

Most importantly you gotta remember that this takes time and hard work and a bit of dedication. I remember almost giving up some many times because my fics that I spent hours on wouldn't make it past 100 or 200 notes, but I just kept going. It sucked having no feedback on things I worked hard on for a long time, and sometimes I still don't get any, sometimes fics won't go above 100 notes for a long time, but sometimes they'll hit 1k in two days. It's always a random gamble, so just keep putting fics out and sharpening that writing skill. Also I'd like to add that I use to look up to a lot of other writers and want to be like them. You shouldn't do that though, you shouldn't ever want to write like anyone else. You should want to write like you so people will one day want to write like you. I know that sounds stupid and cheesy, but the reality of saying that is that it's hard to grow and become your own thing if you try to write like someone else? You should just write whatever you enjoy writing and over time you'll gain a following of the kinds of people who like reading what you've got to offer. I wish someone would've told me that from the start. Followers really don't mean anything at the end of the day though , and sometimes they go to people's heads, sometimes they make people feel pressured and stressed like "I need a break from writing for a while but will my followers be mad?" Or "will they all be disappointed or will I lose them if I don't put out this fic I promised them?" Just be careful not to think that, and be sure to put yourself first. It's hard to make content if you're just burnt out and need a break sometimes, so take good care of yourself and your brain will repay you in the form of good writing.

Michael wasn’t really sure what time it was. Only that he was awake, and it was early. Too early to be awake, and definitely too early to be propped up on his side watching Calum sleep. But, really, what was the harm. He was handsome, even more so when he slept and some of the tension he had during the day had faded away. He’d become even more relaxed lately, settling in to who he was and what he wanted. Michael was proud of him.

Calum stirred a little in his sleep. He’d always been a better sleeper than Michael. He’d always adapted better to sleeping on the buses and in strange hotel rooms and dealing with the jet lag. Michael had always kind of...suffered. It was how the jokes about Michael being angry when he was woken up had started. He was still pissy when he was woken up, but it was because his sleep was hard earned and not easy for him. Calum teased him over it, even now, but he respected it. After all, he was the one who had suggested melatonin, and offered to try it with him, and then suggested meditating, and yoga, and baths before bed.

Michael gently dragged the pad of his finger over one of Calum’s cheekbones and along his jawline. He’d always had great bone structure, always been the most attractive person Michael had ever seen. He still didn’t know what the fuck he was doing with him. But god, was he grateful for it. He didn’t know what he’d do without Calum now, didn’t know what he’d do without his comfort and his grounding presence. He was Michael’s rock, not that he’d ever say it out loud. Calum knew, though. Calum always knew.

Calum stirred again, barely opening his eyes to give Michael a very sleepy smile. “Hey,” he said, voice low and laced with sleep. “Can’t sleep?”

Michael shook his head. This wasn’t an uncommon occurrence, though it had happened less since he’d started sleeping with Calum. He helped. “No. Go back to sleep, though. I’ll manage.”

It was Calum’s turn to shake his head, albeit slightly. He was clearly still mostly asleep. “That’s okay. What time is it?”

Michael glanced over at the clock. “2:03 am.” Yikes. Early.

So if you’re creating a masterlist, you’ll want to make a post with that as the title.

Then, type the titles of all your works in the body of the post.

As always, save the post as a draft before navigating away from it.

Make sure you’ve copied the link to the post you’ll be inserting—you have to do this before you go to insert the link if you’re on mobile. If you’re inserting many links, it’s just easier on desktop because then you can switch between tabs/windows without saving and navigating away from your post between each new link you want to insert.

For each title (or whatever it is), select the text you want people to have to click to get to the post linked.

By selecting text, you’ll be given the option to bold, italicise, or strikethrough it. The option to insert a link will also appear.

Choose the little link symbol, then paste your link in the box that pops up. Select “Add” (or “Done” if you’re on desktop). Then, you’re done! Aaaand repeat over and over~

I recommend messing around with all the formatting options available for posts both on mobile and desktop, just so you can have the most aesthetically pleasing (to you!) and functional post!

You can also create all the text with fun formatting on mobile and then go back and insert the links through desktop. However, this will mean that any further edits should be made through desktop (otherwise, funky things might happen).

Oh, and you can change the colour of the text if you’re on mobile! There are also more options to change the font and text size on mobile. On desktop, you can make text larger by selecting the ‘H’ that appears—this is for “heading,” but doesn’t necessarily mean “heading” like it does in, say, a word document.

You can also add emojis or symbols (‘Emojis & Symbols’ under the ‘Edit’ tab of your browser, if on desktop) to delineate genre, warnings, etc. Symbols can also be used as bullet points (on desktop), or just choose bullet points under the font selection on mobile (left-hand side, above your keyboard).

Some people also like to add gifs or photos to their masterlists. On mobile, it’s pretty self-explanatory (again, the little bar above your keyboard). If you search for a gif through the little bar of icons on mobile, tumblr automatically gives credit to the original poster!

If you find artwork or an edit you’d like to use, always make sure to ask the artist if they’re okay with you using their work in a masterlist. And then, give them credit directly below the artwork/edit/gif by saying “artwork/edit/gif credit to” and linking their blog. There’s always the chance they might want you to do something else to credit them, though.

On desktop, to insert a photo, gif, or “Keep Reading” link (I guess that’s the right word;;; ), press enter so you have a blank line and little icons for those options will appear on the right side of the post. The same process as above applies.

The “Keep Reading” is useful in fics that are long or that have sensitive content. I highly recommend using this option in your work. It keeps your blog, your work when it shows up in the tags, and your work on others’ dashboards much more streamline. However, it’s only possible to insert it on desktop.

You can always look at others’ masterlists and such for ideas of how to format your (although, don’t copy it exactly....).

A: I use bullet points and jot down general notes for the fic. I'll write a quick one-line summary and then a multi-paragraph summary with more detail. After that, I'll jot down important details about every character specifically and then important details about the characters and how they relate to each other (like so and so met at age 5). For every chapter, I start to bullet point how I want it to play out. So, if I start with someone waking up in the morning and then they have work which would be where they'd be the love interest, it'd be something like:

A: Oh yeah, for sure. I think back to bad things that have happened and listen to really sad songs to get to that part of my writing but I don't separate from my real life feelings

A: I have a form from Google Docs and people just select what they want to be tagged in and then I have 3 separate Google Documents (series, headcanons, one-shots) and they’re divided by fic and person. I just copy the URL from the form and put it under whichever things they wanted to be tagged and then I delete their form. Then I can copy and paste the tag list at the end of the fic without a problem

Q: Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?

A: Write as often as you want, don't force yourself. If you wanna write the thing, just do it. Literally, who cares if it's been done a thousand times or if it's never been done. Just write for you. Post for yourself and for others, but WRITE for YOU. Write what you want and write what you know (this could just mean you gotta do some research). Please, take notes because you WILL regret it if you do not (I am talking from personal experience). If you need a break, take it. Plots change and that's okay. Characters develop. Develop them how you want, not how you think other people would want them to. No one knows YOUR characters better than YOU. Do what you love and write what you want. Have fun and when you feel like you've lost it, start something new or take a break. Write with ease and don't stress yourself out. Please have fun. Some people will love what you write and some people will hate it and that's okay. Don't take it personally. Everyone likes different things and that's okay. Pay attention to those who love it, they matter. Proof reading is important and Grammarly is your friend. Just write, you'll get better with everything you write. There's no such thing as a one-hit wonder.

Q: How do you choose what part of a fic to post with a teaser?

A: Legit, I'll either pick the beginning (up to 1k words) or I'll find a spot that I can end on a cliffhanger and backtrack between 700-1k words and post that. You want people to want to know what's happening, so whatever part would make people go "what the fuck" that part.

⋆ ◦ ° ☾ matthew daddario + cis male + he/him — have you met wolfgang ‘wolfie’ zaharov? they are a twenty-eight year old known around town as the dirtbag. they currently work for the savages as a pimp, though they are also a preacher. they are a bisexual scorpio, which means they are amicable + hard-working, as well as selfish + untrustworthy. all black clothing. shaky tattoos. rosaries laying over chest hickeys.

wolfie is ajax anderson’s oldest kid ( that people know of lmao ), and he was raised by the man. his mother abandoned him with his dad when wolf was just two months old, being a drug-addict stripper that certainly wasn’t looking for the responsibility of raising a child; wolf has no memory of his mother, and the only information he has of her is the name on his birth certificate. 

ever since he was a teenager, ajax always raised wolfie to be his heir, to follow his father’s footsteps and to, one day, run the town’s local brothel. wolfgang was never interested in it, actually. for as long as he could remember, wolfie was always disgusted by his dad’s actions. he hated the life of crime, hated that his father was running a brothel, hated the gang running the town. 

wolfie’s version of teenage rebellion was to join the local church. he swore celibacy and to uphold God’s words when he was just seventeen, being one of the youngest preachers in town. wolf spent a couple of years traveling the world to spread the word of god after that, and the time away from his family and his town only made him realize the mistake he had made. 

deep down, wolfgang has always been amoral with a penchant for trouble. as he stood in front of a packed church reciting the bible, all wolfie wanted to do was hang out with the cute guy from the bakery next door and smoke some weed. he drowned his personal demons for years, denying his own pleasures because that was what he was taught to do. about five years ago, however, he simply couldn’t do it anymore. 

wolfie came back to valdez about eight years ago, and at one point he simply broke. he came back to his father with his tail between his legs, begging for a job and some comfort. it was balthazar’s idea that he kept his day job as the town’s preacher: despite his wrongdoings wolf is still a very religious man, and balthazar caito saw advantage in having some good blackmail material on the local church in case he ever needed it.

wolf is... an ass. he does only what he wants to, either it be having sex with strangers, beating someone in a bar fight or nearly overdosing on a friday night. he has no impulse control, and doesn’t care how his actions may affect the people around him. 

despite his infidelity when it comes to romantic relationships, wolfgang is loyal to the core when it comes to everything else, which is why he didn’t leave the savages when his father did. wolfie started our with the savages, he intends on dying with ( and for ) them.

he can be pretty arrogant too--- wolfie knows he’s a hot mess, but he’d rather focus on the ‘hot’ than the ‘mess’. 

will probably hit on you. and your sister. and your dad. and your mom. 

he’s still a good shoulder to cry on, if you need. during his years as a preacher wolfgang became a pretty good therapist, and he still gives off advice to anyone who may come to him. ( he’s the definition of ‘do as i tell you not as i do’. )

he’s 6′5, with a mess of dark curly hair he hardly ever brushes. 

always with a scruff bc he’s too lazy to shave everyday, though he never lets it turn into an actual beard. 

he has a bunch of tattoos, none of them very well done. most of his tattoos are black and white and can easily be considered doodles. usually only gets a tattoo when he’s plastered. 

wolf has a silver nose ring on the left nostril, but he doesn’t wear it too often anymore. 

dresses in mostly black or dark clothing; he’ll put on a leather pant whenever he’s trying to get fucked but usually he’s in slacks and a black button down.

a best friend — more like a confidant, the one person that gets to see wolf with his guard down; probably one of the few people in town that doesn’t underestimate him.

a childhood friend — wolfie left town at eighteen, and he also left this person behind. maybe they had a lot of plans of moving away together, of escaping life in a small town and becoming somebody together in the big city; instead, frank walked away in the first chance he got and abandoned this muse without second thought.

an ex — they dated for around two years, maybe even lived together for a while ? either way it ended horribly because wolf just couldn’t keep it in his pants.

a friend with benefits — wlf doesn’t do exclusive relationships very well, but he’s great in the sex department; this character would know that well, since he is constantly hitting them up for some fun with no strings attaches. 

an enemy — maybe they had beef before wolfie moved away, maybe they just met. either way, thy are constantly butting heads, maybe even brawling a couple of times.

a hate-sex type of fling --- they hate each other for some reason, can never be in the same room without screaming at each other. that is, until they’ve had a couple of drinks and end up sleeping together as often as they fight.

a protective friend --- wolf definitely doesn’t have his shit together. maybe this person doesn’t either, but that doesn’t stop them from caring for wolfie like the mother he has never had. 

workers --- wolfie currently runs his father’s old brothel. maybe some of the escorts work for him ? we could always add more to this plot, maybe wolfie is also a regular client, maybe the escort hates his guts, maybe they feel protected by him.

a neighbor — maybe they get along, maybe they hate each other with the passion of a thousand suns. who knows ?

a roommate --- wolfie is probably the worst roommate ever; he’s constantly bringing strangers home at late hours, he drinks and do too many drugs in the living room, probably doesn’t know how to clean up after himself. he makes really good food and pays his part of the rent on time, though. 

a party friend — wolfie loves to go wild, and this person isn’t stopping him. in fact, quite the opposite, with the two constantly egging each other on.

a cuddle buddy — wolfgang is definitely a touchy person, and so is this muse. they are always pda’ing in public, though it’s very platonic for the both of them.

a partner in crime — wolfie is constantly up to no good. some nights it’s just sitting in a parking lot drinking his weight on vodka, some nights it’s nearly getting killed in a knife fight at the local bar. whatever it is, this person is always there to back him up.

a childhood best friend — this two were attached by the hip all throughout their childhood and teenage years. in the past couple of years they grew apart, and are now trying to light up that flame again; which creates several awkward hang out sessions and late nights of doing the weird stuff they used to do as kids.
