This was ... not what I was expecting the IFCC's goal to be, and I'm a tad disappointed, but its not unreasonable. I'm hoping this isn't the whole of it, that they intend to make use of the Snarl's escape to make more plays. Because, of course, why bother telling Nale everything.

I've been skimming back through the comic in preparation for a post I'm making soon, and I noticed something about a Western Goddess who has been mentioned a few times in relation to the IFCC and the Dark One...

I don't want to jump to conclusions, I've been disappointed by my own speculations not happening before with other stories...but there's a growing part of me that thinks Tiamat is going to be important, or at least relevant, to upcoming events.

New page!! How do you feel about seeing nale again?

omg bless you anon for still wanting to hear my opinion even though i've not been as present lately (had a bunch of apocalyptic stuff happen in my life and also seasonal depression in general kicking my ass) but no yeah, i loved this page so much. i think maybe this is the first time we've seen nale and sabine in the new art style? sabine looks so good omg. i've always loved their relationship, how despite the cartoonish evil of their roles, they truly love and support each other in a way that's completely sincere

but yeah, nale, i'm so glad to see him back, the way he left the story was just. so sad. everything he struggled for, unceremoniously crushed by his father. nothing sadder than seeing a character try so hard, banging their head against the same wall and being stymied by why they aren't making progress, and dying in that unfulfilled state (miko... 😢). and i think nale expresses that well himself in the strip, like, the futility of his actions in life, how he got in his own way, and ended up with the short end of the stick (pun intended). he, like every character in this comic, started off a shallow caricature that became so much more complex with time, and this page was the perfect way to zoom out, take a look at his whole situation, and really sum that up for him

i'm terribly excited to see where this is going to lead, now that we're caught up with how he's been doing since the last time we saw him, we can go forward and see what his role in the story from now is going to be--this new nale who is no longer controlled by the desire to one-up his father, here where we are approaching the climax of this 20+ year comic. i could not be more hyped to see how nale and sabine are going to play into it!!

Newest Order of the Stick: Oh, that is interesting. Of course the IFCC would be angered when they found out about the Gods' little memory trick. And given that the erasure of souls is the only way they have to hit back, they would do it out of spite. It's not clear what their next step would be: I've been assuming that outsiders get supplied whatever belief-sustenance they need from an aligned God, so doing this would probably lead to them getting starved. Maybe "fuck you, eat shit" is the whole point, maybe they've got a few centuries of supplies in a pocket dimension they think they can hide out in, maybe it's only Gods that really need mortal-belief-fuel and outsiders can scrounge by with scraps.

It does raise the question of why they don't try throwing their lot in with The Dark One. Thor says he kills any representative the other gods try to send, so presumably they don't want to risk getting splatted before making an offer. But "go down there, help the High Priest to get control of the gate, and make sure to mention you were sent by the IFCC" would be a pretty good plan.

Maybe they don't know the dark one's real plan, maybe they think he wouldn't be grateful even as a lawful God, maybe it's just that being evil makes you spiteful on a certain level and even the IFCC's general "can't we all just get along?" Schtick isn't enough to cover that

Anyways it's clear the endgame for this plot is Nale sacrificing himself to stop the gate from exploding, at the cost of being erased from existence.

just read the new comic and goddamn I feel bad for nale right now, like he finally sort of had a good thing going (coming, really but still) for him and now... damn

IFCC still has swag though. I need to know what their plans are.

Finished my reread of The Order of the Stick! God I love this comic. I noticed the most recent pages seem to be taking a shift back towards the comedic which is nice; it's been in heavy plot mode for a while, but it feels like there's been more good page-end punchlines since the end of Utterly Dwarfed, unsure how much of that effect is real though. I'm not complaining either way, but it's just interesting to see how much the comic has changed over time.

Some big mysteries still left. The [—] in the rift is obviously where the plot is heading, though its role in said plot is less obvious. I'm very unsure where the MitD thing is heading given that that's been with us since the very start; I can't think of a satisfying conclusion for it at the moment. I suspect the IFCC will be back soon as well.

I wonder how many more times I'll get to read it – I haven't got a rule but I seem to have managed to approximate three years between whenever I decide I want to read it again so far – I suspect it'll be ongoing for at least four more years so maybe twice more at this rate.

I really hope that Sabine ends up betraying the IFCC at some point in the story.

Not just because it would be a really cool way for her character arc to end, but also because this comic is unfortunately lacking in prominent heroic women with dark skin and this would take steps to change that. It's the only complaint I have left about the comic at this point.
