This is a hard question to answer.  I write a lot of heartfelt speeches, emotional confessions, and verbal smackdowns into my work, which feel like they’d be the normal shoo-ins for something like this.  I think I got this question the last time I did this meme, and used Megatron’s first speech from IFYF, but I’ll try something different this time.

Here’s a snippet from Shall We Dance?:

“So, wanna dance?”

First Aid sputtered.  “W-what?”

Vortex chuckled, releasing his grip on First Aid’s face.  “I just mean, since you were so keen to point out this whole mutual attraction thing we got going on, and since this is a party, and since you seem a little bored, just sitting here by the refreshments table, I thought maybe we could, y’know . . .”  He gave a little spin to the rhythm of the music.  “Rock our bodies right, or whatever it is the squishies call it.”

It was entirely inappropriate, but First Aid couldn’t stave off the giggle.  “Where did you pick up a phrase like that?”

If First Aid thought Vortex would be upset by the laughter, he was very wrong.  Instead, red optics lit up behind their visor, happy as could be.  “I’ve been studying squishy culture.  Now, let’s shake our groove thang, yeah?”

This time, First Aid cackled, loud enough to turn a few heads.  “Primus, you sound ridiculous!”

“Mmm?”  If not for the mask, First Aid was certain he’d see a mischievous smirk on those mysterious lips.  “Come on, stop making fun of me.  I wanna boogie.”  Vortex’s hand closed around First Aid’s, and for one delightful second, the pair very nearly made it to the dance floor.  Then First Aid remembered himself.

“I’m working – guarding the refreshment table.  I’d like to think I have enough professional integrity to not go cavorting off with the first mech who asks, at least not while on duty.  Besides,” he added, slipping his hand from Vortex’s grip, and hiding it in the safety of his now-folded arms, “I somehow sense an ulterior motive at play here.”

Vortex replied with a dramatic gasp.  “Why – I would never!  How could you say such a thing?”

Because you’re a murderer, a monster, a complete and utter -  “Stop playing coy,” First Aid frowned behind his own mask.  “There’s no way it’s only a dance you want.”

“What do you mean?” Vortex asked innocently, cocking his head.  “Are you questioning my integrity?”

“A bit.”  It was a risky thing to say, but Vortex didn’t seem the type to take offense.  And indeed, after a moment’s pause, he was laughing again.

“Aww, Aidy –“

“That’s a terrible nickn –“

“What do I gotta do to get you to dance with me?”  Seamlessly, he slid to his knees, in a way that had First Aid’s medic coding cringing.  “Do I gotta get on my knees and beg?  ‘Cause I ain’t too proud to beg, y’know.”

And it goes on in a similar vein for most of the fic.  It’s not particularly deep, or inspirational, or meaningful really, but whenever I see this fic as I scroll through my Ao3 works list, I get a fond smile on my face, and this conversation is why.  This story was for a Secret Santa, and was a bit outside of the content I normally write, but I had so much fun with it.  Every time a new song lyric popped in my head, it would be like, ‘Yup, that’s goin’ in there too.’  It was incredibly self-indulgent, but I think it fits in the context of the story, and it never fails to make me chuckle when I reread it.  I think in a catalogue full of world-altering speeches and political debates, this conversation is the one that stands out as my favorite.

If you could choose one of your fics to be filmed, which would you choose?

I gave a cursory look through everything on my Ao3, but I I’ll Follow You Forever was my first choice, and still remains the most obvious one.  Even a few years after its completion, it is still probably the best fic I’ve ever written, and so much of it has a cinematic feel to it, I think, from the first chapter where Megatron and Soundwave fight in the gladiator pit, to the massive Battle of Iacon towards the end, and even the quieter moment are so easy to picture in my mind.  I’d love the chance to see it visualized.

 It’s probably a bit long for a movie, but like, a TV series would be cool.

Which fic has been the hardest to write?

Hardest to write was The Last Five Hundred Years, hands down.  It was an interesting exercise, but a nightmare to write.  Shockwave’s backwards storytelling was particularly challenging, as I felt that he kept coming to the same conclusions or rehashing the same themes with every chapter, whereas Blurr’s arc was a bit more straightforward.  If I ever experiment with anachronistic storytelling again, I probably won’t do it with something I’m actively publishing, as that certainly made it much harder to go back and correct.

That being said, I do like the way it ultimately turned out, and I do regularly reread it.

Which fic has been the easiest to write?

I think I’d have to go with Living in a Box.  I was able to write all 9,500 words of that in one sitting, iirc, so it’s the easy answer. 

This was another experimental fic, but I think that the more surreal nature of the story-telling in this one made it really easy to keep the words flowing (not to mention how much of it was copy-pasting early parts of the story with minor edits).  It also distills one of the themes I really like to work with down to its essence, which helped a lot.  I still kind of want to do similar fics for the other Combaticons, but I’m not sure I have enough to say about their stays in Detention to make it work.

Shockwave is easily my least favorite character in "I'll Follow You Forever;" he's utterly remorseless and cruel, which makes him a great foil for cares-too-much Soundwave. But there are some moments where it seems he might have emotions (when he tries to give SW advice on Megatron, the discussion of Brainstorm), even in a distant way. Does he /like/ SW as more than a creation? What was your thought process characterizing him?

First of all, EE!!  Seeing this made my morning!

As for TFP Shockwave, I’ve always seen him as the sort of person who idealizes the concept of logic, practicality, and pragmatism, but at the end of the day, is still just a normal person (more or less), and therefor prone to the ‘weaknesses’ of anyone else.  

He still feels emotional closeness with others (albeit not very many others), but because such feelings, as far as he’s concerned, are not necessarily logical, he likewise feels that he must justify any attachments he develops.  So he feels fondness for Soundwave due to his role in Soundwave’s creation, and he feels fondness for Brainstorm due to the fact that they work well together.  He will deny that there is anything more to it than that, even if he has to lie to himself. 

However, sometimes he does slip and do something emotionally-driven and ‘irrational.’  Helping Soundwave escape from Ratbat’s imprisonment, for instance, was motivated just as much by his protective feelings for Soundwave was it was any deals Megatron made with him, though he would deny it.

If I ever do get around to writing any of the IFYF oneshots I’ve been planning, Shockwave is definitely going to be getting a few.
