Samsung Galaxy S6 Taken on 27/04/2019. 'Valle Argentina' ('Argentina Valley') possesses a multitude of beautiful towns and villages – some situated along the river Argentina, others nestled among the mountains – from Taggia to Triora. Leaving from Taggia, you'll soon come across the fortified town of Badalucco – and boy is it beautiful! Popular not just with Italian visitors but also contemporary artists, Badalucco possesses stone houses and narrow lanes embellished with wonderful works of art rarely seen in this area of Italy. The town is best known for its imposing castle overlooking the valley as well as its fascinating medieval bridge. Night time is, in addition, a great opportunity to wonder the dimly lit cobbled streets and imagine you're stepping back in time, knowing you're always safe. Of all four provinces making up Liguria – La Spezia, Genova, Savona and Imperia – for me the latter is the most interesting and worthwhile. Public transport in this province is fairly efficient and is managed by the company 'Rivieratrasporti' — not to be confused with 'Riviera Trasporti Piemonte'. It's best to explore the province of Imperia valley by valley using the coastal towns as reference points: Diano Marina and followed by Imperia, Porto Maurizio, Arma di Taggia, Sanremo, Bordighera, Vallecrosia and Ventimiglia. ________________________________________ #ig_imperia #lamialiguria #badalucco #italia #italy #ilikeitaly #italygram #traveldiaries #travel_drops #ig_italia #yallersitalia #volgoitalia #ig_liguria #yallersliguria #volgoliguria #doyoutravel #travelblogger #finditliveit #living_destinations #travelawesome #adventuretravel #borghiditalia #italianvillages #kings_villages #orgoglioliguria #prettylittleitaly #beautifulmatters #neverstopexploring #bbctravel #natgeotravel (at Badalucco) https://www.instagram.com/p/B9XIjk9q9Bp/?igshid=5mh8cwizbbmv

⁣ Canon Powershot SX730 HS ⁣ Taken on 27/04/2019.⁣ ⁣ With only about 300 inhabitants and nestled deep in 'Valle Argentina' ('Argentina Valley') – and just a few kilometres from the French border – Triora is a medieval gem sat on a high hill overlooking the enchanting woods. It is known as the land of bread, mountains, and... witches!⁣ ⁣ That's right. The village was the location of witch trials between 1587 and 1589, during which local women were supposedly accused of the acid rain and famine hit by the plague. It is said that some women were burned at stake while others died under torture. There's even a museum called 'Museo di Triora Etnografico e della Stregoneria' that delves into this witchcraft period and a statue recalling the witch hunt.⁣ ⁣ Thankfully, the Triora of today has none of that spooky sentiment; it is an incredibly charming and picturesque village that is officially classified among the most beautiful villages in Italy.⁣ ⁣ I was immensely impressed by how the medieval appearance of Triora has been kept intact. I also really enjoyed exploring the ancient alleys, arched passages and steep pathways.⁣ ⁣ One local told me that Triora is claimed to be one of the oldest villages in Liguria. Given how long it took to get there (almost 2 hours by bus despite Triora only being about 30km from the coast), she may be right.⁣ ⁣ The cultural and artistic heritage of this small village is utterly amazing and deserves to be visited without haste.⁣ ⁣𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲: The same as the previous post: take a bus from Sanremo, Arma di Taggia or Taggia–Arma station. Canon Powershot SX730 HS Taken on 02/03/2019. The last patch of western Liguria is known as 'la Riviera dei Fiori' ('the Riviera of Flowers') because it's where the famous Mimosa flower blooms, which has become the symbolic gift to offer to Italian women on 'Festa della Donna' ("Women's Day"). Seaside towns and cities like Sanremo, Ospedaletti and Bordighera are decorated with flowers during spring, just when the milder weather arrives. It's not just by the sea where locals and visitors alike can enjoy the beauty of nature. The Verbone valley is replete with Mimosa flowers and charming medieval villages that are fine examples of artistic heritage. Just 4km from the modern seaside resort Vallecrosia, you'll come to the most secret village in 'Val Verbone' called Vallecrosia Alta. It's an ancient settlement where you can find oases of peace and relaxation studded with colourful murals, each depicting people going about their daily lives. I enjoyed observing these murals painted on front doors, stone walls and archways so much that I've included a selection of them in this post. For me, they're not only beautiful paintings; they're also a symbol of solidarity, togetherness and community spirit. They're what makes this village so unique and unforgettable. You can explore wonderful ancient villages like Vallecrosia Alta in 'Val Verbone' with 'Rivieratrasporti' on the Ventimiglia–Perinaldo bus line, Monday to Saturday. You'll see how each village tells its own story — and how the trip along the valley makes a terrific tale. ________________________________________ #vallecrosia #ig_imperia #italia #italy #ilikeitaly #italycomestoyou #natgeotravel #lonelyplanet #rsa_streetview #ig_italia #ancientcity #yallersitalia #lensculturestreets #lamialiguria #orgoglioliguria #turismoinliguria #ig_liguria #yallersliguria #travelzoo #cnntravel #treasureitaly #prettylittleitaly #kings_villages #valverbone #borghiditalia #borghiitaliani #travelblogger #iamatraveler #instadaily #forbestravelguide (at Vallecrosia Alta, Vallecrosia) https://www.instagram.com/p/B-g374FIhkw/?igshid=p4qga7ug0ms7

Canon Powershot SX730 HS Taken on 05/03/2019. You've probably realised by now that I have a soft spot for timeless medieval villages in Italy. Each time I visit one, I feel I have a greater understanding of the Italian way of life. Each one has its own unique architecture, character and history. And each one has its own story to tell — just as though I'm travelling back in time and yet learning something new each time. That's why I never get tired of visiting them! I've got to know hundreds of villages up and down the 'lo Stivale' ('the Boot') — some that have become tourist magnets, others that have stood silent. The ones that remain firmly in my mind belong to the latter group and can be found in enchanting valleys like 'Val Nervia' ('Nervia Valley') in the province of Liguria, bordering France. This valley is not only paradise for nature lovers, but it's also home to a cluster of enchanting old villages. Just over a week ago I posted the most-visited village in the valley, Dolceacqua, and quite rightly so. But thanks to the Doria Family – an old and extremely wealthy Genoese family who played a major role in the history of the Republic of Genoa from the 12th century to the 16th century – there are other historically fascinating walled villages waiting to be witnessed like Isolabona. Like Dolceacqua, its neighbouring village, Isolabona was built in a strategic position perched on a mountain and enclosed by a fortified wall. It was defended by a castle with a square-shaped keep, which is now restored to its original splendour. Isolabona translates as "Good Island". The "Island" refers to Isolabona being built on an islet of the Nervia River. "Good" could refer to the food, the people — or the village! 🍝👵🏚 ________________________________________ #isolabona #italia #italy #ig_imperia #lamialiguria #orgoglioliguria #ilikeitaly #italycomestoyou #iorestoacasa #travelmore #bestdestinations #enchanting #alluring_villages #borghiditalia #borghiitaliani #ig_italia #yallersitalia #lensculturestreets #ig_liguria #yallersliguria #socality #raw_italy #thehub_italia #natgeo #lonelyplanet #bbctravel #cnntravel #forbestravelguide #rsa_streetview #picoftheday (at Isolabona) https://www.instagram.com/p/B-U3KTQoaxx/?igshid=17hodo8nm4jgk

Canon Powershot SX730 HS Taken on 27/04/2019. Today it's back to Liguria with another jaw-droppingly beautiful medieval gem in 'Valle Argentina' in the province of Imperia: Montalto Ligure. 'Montalto' means 'high hill', a name that it certainly lives up to because it's over 300 metres above sea level. From the very top of the village you are rewarded with amazing views of the valley, including the French Maritime Alps if you are lucky with the weather. Turning to the village now that I found to be deceptively small as I got lost quite a few times in its incredible stone passageways, as you can see in this photo. But then that's arguably the best way to visit a medieval town or village. I was enchanted by the medieval beauty and quietness of this sleepy ancient village. I could imagine people going for romantic strolls along the maze of alleys, many of which are adorned with plants and flowers — a common theme in Liguria. If you want to have an experience that's out of this world, you only need to take a bus with the company 'Riviera Trasporti' from Sanremo bus station or Arma di Taggia departing for Triora, an ancient village famous for its bread, wine and witches. ________________________________________ #valleargentina #ig_imperia #lamialiguria #orgoglioliguria #italia #italy #ilikeitaly #beautifulplaces #italycomestoyou #italianvillages #kings_villages #doyoutravel #finditliveit #openmyworld #montaltoligure #montalto #streetphotography #oldtown #whatitalyis #exploremore #lonelyplanet #natgeotravel #yallersliguria #yallersitalia #igersitalia #ig_liguria #travel_drops #solotravel #andràtuttobene #iorestoaacasa (at Montalto Ligure) https://www.instagram.com/p/B-B5a8NogHY/?igshid=1mkzma5myvha1

Samsung Galaxy S6 Taken on 17/03/2019. It never ceases to amaze me the long, thin region of Liguria – with a coastline stretching over 300km from Ameglia (bordering Tuscany) to Ventimiglia (bordering France) – has richly decorated pastel-coloured houses wherever you go. Even inland, where the mountains get taller and the valleys more narrow, you can't help but notice this distinctive characteristic. Feast your eyes, for example, on this photo I took this time last year in the medieval village of Dolcedo, situated in 'Valle Prino' ('Prino Valley'). Here, as you go further inland, you see a slightly different range of coloured houses with some painted in grey and brown. However, the colours of the windows and balconies remain practically the same, painted in dark green. It's unique townscapes like this that capture your heart as you explore the narrow alleys and passageways decorated with ivy and the odd flower pot. I really liked wandering along the cobbled streets, crossing the old Roman bridges and following the small stream that runs through the town. It was thanks to this stream that the olive oil mills could run in the past. The real treasure of this town, though, was the church you see on the left with a stunning interior. Dolcedo isn't far from Imperia (just 10km), so you can take a bus with 'Riviera Trasporti' and visit it one morning or afternoon to take a break from the sea and see another side of Liguria. Lesser-known, but maybe a better bet for some! ________________________________________ #ig_imperia #dolcedo #theprettycities #italycomestoyou #bellaitalia #ilbelpaese #italia #italy #ilikeitaly #bestdestinations #italy_hidden_gems #finditliveit #travelblogger #travelphotography #orgoglioliguria #lamialiguria #liguriagram #travelgram #gramslayers #huntgramitaly #smartphonephotography #samsung #ig_italia #yallersitalia #volgoitalia #ig_liguria #yallersliguria #volgoliguria #natgeotravel #lensculture (at Dolcedo) https://www.instagram.com/p/B94ZLDEIA2_/?igshid=1dztagzck3ysi

Samsung Galaxy S6 Taken on 26/04/2019. It was around this time last year when I was putting the finishing touches to my Easter break itinerary that covered the province of Imperia. It's the westernmost province in Liguria, bordering on Piedmont to the north and France to the west, and is one of the most beautiful areas of Italy I've ever visited. Read on while #iorestoacasa : The province of Imperia has a splendid stretch of coast that is known as the 'Riviera dei Fiori' ('the Flower Riviera'), owing to its mild Mediterranean climate that provides excellent conditions for its famous flower nurseries. While this province offers scenic beaches, bays and coves to tourists, it is in fact very hilly and mountainous, so much so that it is divided into four main valleys. I was really eager to explore these because they are where the best inland villages can be found. One such village is Seborga. Unlike any other village in Italy, Seborga has its own flag, anthem, currency ('luigino') and postage stamps. The latter can't be used to send post anymore but the currency can, though just in the village. The reason behind all of this is that Seborga voted to become independent and be known as the 'Principality of Seborga'. Whilst this claim for independence never really realised, it worked magic for the village's tourism as many visitors (mainly Italian) come up from the seaside town of Bordighera to visit. I took my time to visit Seborga and took this great shot of a mural marking Seborga's self-proclaimed independence. I'm not sure what to make of the soldier, but it adds to the village's unique character and charm. You can get to Seborga by bus from Bordighera Monday–Saturday with the company 'Rivieratrasporti'. ________________________________________ #ig_imperia #seborga #borghiditalia #borghiitaliani #borgodeiborghi #alluring_villages #kings_villages #divine_villages #lonelyplanet #streetphotography #smartphonephotography #samsung #italia #tv_living #browsingitaly #prettylittleitaly #charmingitaly #italy #ilikeitaly #orgoglioliguria #lamialiguria #loves_liguria #ig_italia #yallersitalia #volgoitalia #ig_liguria #yallersliguria #volgoliguria #raw_italy (at Seborga) https://www.instagram.com/p/B9vy5d9oAol/?igshid=1hj081y78decp
