Joey Purp - QUARTERTHING ALBUM REVIEW
It doesn’t really feel like Joey Purp’s breakout mixtape, iiiDrops dropped 2 years ago. Joey Purp is known for coming out of the Savemoney crew with fellow Chicago rappers Chance The Rapper, Vic Mensa and Towkio. I praised Joey Purp and iiiDrops for showing versatility and making enjoyable songs. My biggest gripe with it was that Joey Purp did not really have a unique sound of his own and that he sounded too much like Vic and Chance. I would like to praise QUARTERTHING because I don’t only think its a great album, but I think its better than iiiDrops. Joey Purp seems to have found his voice and something that works for him. Plus, Chance, Vic, and Towkio all kind of abandoned that sound that most of the Savemoney members had when they were a tighter collective when releasing projects like Coloring Book, The Autobiography, and WWW. Just like iiiDrops, there aren’t any bad songs on them. I’ll start with the positive and then get to the criticism. The opener, 24k Gold/Sanctified is triumphant and definitely a feel good track as Joey Purp exclaims, “I’m still alive!!!” Ravyn Lenae comes in and kills it too (check her out, she’s got one of the best R&B projects of the year). I don’t know who Jarbari Rayford is but he also sounded great. The next track, Godbody might be my favorite. I really did not expect RZA to feature on it but that’s the best he’s sounded in a while. His part was short but I RZA didn’t have to do too much. The beat on the song is stellar and Joey Purp raps like he has something to prove. In addition to RZA being on this album, GZA spits a 30-second verse, which is the last track. I kinda wish GZA was on Godbody. He would’ve sounded pretty amazing on that song. Elastic kind of reminded me of Girls @ from iiiDrops but I thought it was fun. The track after is even more fun. Aw Shit! has a pretty simple beat but I thought it was such an enjoyable song. I’d play this song at a party. Throughout this album, Joey Purp raps about selling “quarter things” especially on the title track. The track on this album that I cannot stop listening to is Look At My Wrist. The song has this beat thats super in your face and it slaps so hard. It’s definitely one of the hardest hitting tracks I’ve heard this year. It’s an excellent brag-rap type track. When it comes to bragging, my rule is that a rapper needs to be able to brag well and Joey Purp does. Even though I really do like this album, my biggest problem with it is Joey Purp’s delivery on some of the tracks. I think Joey Purp usually has great delivery but on some of these songs, I found myself somewhat disappointed in the way he was saying things. On the track Diamonds Dancing, he sounded a little lazy in his delivery. I’m sure it was on purpose but I didn’t like the way it sounded. On the song Karl Malone, he does this annoying autotune rap thing. He sounded a little bit like Future on his song Sh!t. Other than that, I think this album is great.
Fav Tracks: 24k Gold/Sanctified, Godbody, Aw Shit!, Look At My Wrist, Lebron James
