Reading the POTO novel for the first time and for as much as people claim “ALW romanticized the Phantom” I would argue he “romanticized” Raoul. Raoul in the book is annoying af and has a really weird superiority-inferiority complex. Just your average 21 yr old scrawny young man. Not at all like the Prince Charming he’s made out to be in the musical.

Honestly, The Phantom AND Raoul got a glow up in the musical, they should be thankful.

Tbh I never read that far in DOTC but I heard so much about star flower from fandom that now hearing about it directly from you I feel so cheated. I was promised a femme fatale.. tho in hindsight considering how much these writers hate women I probably shouldn't have gotten my hopes up

I WISH we got a femme fatale. It would have been incredibly cathartic for her to make herself alluring to Clear Sky, turning his worst traits against him and getting both power and revenge. For Thunder to bond to her over it, reaching the conclusion in the end that they both had terrible parents that they need to reject.

but, knowing the Erins, they would have just had Clear Sky kill her violently and gratuitously for ever tricking him. Like how he gouged Willow Tail's eyes out. So... I guess we were doomed either way.

It's always exciting finding a 5 star read🥰 The majority of books I read are usually 4 stars (imo), as I tend to DNF anything that feels like a 2 or 1 star, and a 3 star rating tends to go to books that have enough mystery/unanswered questions for me to want to continue, but could be better in many areas (again, imo). But to read a book and come out of it like yeah, that was something special, is a wonderful feeling

one of my central problems with the baru series is that in my opinion the books do not do a good job balancing what i call their "baru girlboss moments" with like, their explicit depictions of colonial brutality, cultural genocide, torture etc and the tonal whiplash is too much for me. the (for lack of a better word) "fun" way the text frames baru tanking an island economy or being called out by her mother for having pussy juice on her fingers feels like deeply incongruous with the experience of reading the rest of the text. to me.
