Shingyoku fashion :)

Hi it is me the Shingyoku guy™️ posting of the very specific touhou pc98. Today I finished baking an unsollicited height scale with all my Shingyoku design interpretations :)

Took me a while to arrest them all!! This is quite a wide picture so I made some standalones grouped per pairs, below if youre interested 👇

Felt the need to mention it as some disclaimer: Unless the opposite is mentionned (for one take), all brunettes are men and all redheads are women. (I know this place's userbase seemed less judgy than on other places ive posted before, its just. To not assume some of them are women just because they have long hair 🙄)

1a. Shapeshifter Shingyoku (a kami, my main take). The ones with two tones hair are headcanon additionnal forms (small one being a "weak/rest form" & the dramatic one a "true/complete" form). So these 4 are the same person.

1b. Shingyoku's creators. HC: Shingyoku being a kami born from the fused spirits of 2 shrine officiants. They are humans who reach godhood and lived a long time before HRtP took place.

2. Weird """genderbend""" take. Shingyoku has no canon, but brunette is mostly depicted as a man & redhead as a woman, this take goes the opposite way. I imagine too theyre the gatekeepers in case 1b didnt fuse into the kami Shingyoku. They are youkais (fudakaeshi & oni).

3. A more derivative take. Redhead is a dragon deity from an other planet/realm who arrived on earth (I have a whole worldbuilding WIP). Brunette is human. Both are diviners (redhead refers to Yi Jing, brunette an onmyoji impersonating a priest). They live in some sort of fantasy Heian era. The gates are their final destination tho nothing refering to touhou like names being mentionned (hope I clearly explained it Id like to keep it short)

4. A very derivative take. Both are same species as redhead from 3. My main direction was in general to create a whole species/civilization using Shingyoku's vague concept rather than make something which would fit into touhou lore. So these dont look "touhoulike" at all but are my personal favorite as I went with my own designing style. So they dont live on earth/gensokyo, no touhou terms mentionned, just me wanting more Shingyoku inspired content. It would take me a while to explain what they are, refer to & the worldbuilding of their planet/realm, so Ill dedicate a whole post for them one day. Im just happy a concept as vague/obscure as Shingyoku now inspire me into making my own lore :)

Maybe for some people ALL of these designs will look very derivative and "they dont look like the sprites!!" but

Im an old fashion student with a degree, I love making designs since years

The sprites have very simple designs, maybe for some its not a bad thing, but ive always been more interested in the more ornated designs, I wished to enhance the designs a bit. I love Shingyoku I want them to be extra!

Not just about simplicity but the balance of flow as well. I dont straight up interpret a design from its base material especially for such old sprites. I treat the sprites elements more as a list of "to add" reccurences (to not say "pr*mpts, I hate that word now). I initially dont love Shingyoku for their design, rather the history I have with them, its hard for me to appreciate most fanarts of them. But this is a whole topic regarding touhou pc98 chara design which deserves its own post for an other day.

I've read like a third now of the second pern book.

Again, one of the things that absolutely sailed over my head as a kid is the abortion stances in the narrative.

Women are easily able to attain pain free, instant abortion via the dragon teleport, the mere act of going in between removes pregnancy.

And there's issues between the conservative Holders who don't believe in it, who are very anti sexual freedom in general, and the relaxed ideas of the dragon riders.

Also, women in the dragon weyr don't raise their own kids, they foster them out, and while people do form long term relationships, there isn't marriage.

These things are so obviously revolutionary in retrospect, they are such clear signs of the politics of the era.

And man, pern world building is just neat. Having it be backwards to fantasy is neat, it really is.

I read a really interesting fic that did some exploring of the darker implications of the dragon hierarchy, and the mating flights and stuff

And in it Jora lives, and I just felt really vindicated.

I hate the way the books talk about her, about fat bodies in general. I wish she could have been someone that Lessa could have interacted with, maybe with more sympathy, maybe with less power behind the men?

One of the weakest moments of description in the first book is Lessa looking at herself in the mirror after being clean for the first time in years and she's all 'im so skinny and pale, but still got those titties!'

God, it's such an exercise in conflicting values and concepts as a series, in authorial intent, in actual execution.

I think it's important to engage with its canon, rather than just handwave it away, and the fic I've been reading has done this, while exploring it, questioning it and evolving it. It's good stuff.

I was hoping there would be fic like that!

There's an astounding fic series, Friends Across Borders for Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar series that has straight up supplanted a lot of the canon for me.

As I'm reading fantasy that I loved as a kid again, I hope I find more fic for those series that people write original scenarios and characters for while still embracing the canon with a critical eye.

i did watch the yin yang master movies a couple of months ago. i remember the discourse when people called it 'xianxia'.

im actually familiar with the five phases! It came up in a korean novel that uses elements from various mythology, this particular thing in relation to a mythological exorcist. i considered that i might have mistaken it for that but i didn't think so.

another thing that feels similar to pentagrams is the '8 gates' (2 of which were life and death but I don't remember the rest?) i read in a xianxia novel, tho the writers could have made that up for the plot heh.

I know I whined about people not understanding my little fandom, but I didn't realize "It's not xianxia! AAAAAAH!" was more widespread than that.

I even had a Chinese-speaking friend go snoop around in Chinese fan discussions to make sure they all thought DoE was set in Japan and I wasn't insane.

The big issue is that onmyoudou/onmyouji canons are still historical fantasy, they're heavily daoist, and they're from an era of Japanese history when the aesthetics often look pretty Chinese to a modern eye. All that samurai and zen rock garden minimalism stuff shows up centuries later. This is full on penis hat-wearing, blinged out Heian period.

(One of my favorite things about historical costume dramas is how dumb historical hats look. I love them so much.)

The Heian period was basically trying to rip off Tang Dynasty China super hard, and a lot of Chinese fantasy uses Tang Dynasty shit too. Not to mention all of the "real" esoteric shit and traditional medicine and such is going to look the same even in a modern Chinese media that isn't overtly magical.

So if you're coming to Dream of Eternity or the other YYM based on the video game from being an Untamed fan or whatever, it's extremely non-obvious what's going on here.

Dream of Eternity in particular is in conversation with the two Japanese movie adaptations of Yumemakura's novels. Things like the sexy exorcism are drawn directly from there. I read some translated interviews where they straight up said they were referencing them a lot.

There are obviously both dragons and big snakes in Chinese mythology. However, my impression is that DoE was trying to reference Yamata no Orochi, though not very directly. The princess is pretty clearly Yao Bikuni. Qingming (Seimei) has shikigami, including a tengu. The thing with the demon playing a lute is a classic Japanese story that takes place at the Rashomon gate.

It's not like you couldn't have infinite stories about demons stealing important Asian-style lutes set in China. It's just that if you're familiar with the rest of this franchise and with historical Japanese writings, you recognize that story as coming straight from the Konjaku Monogatarishuu.

If u do tend to like my writing, kind of a overview of topics likely to get hit if reading the drafts:

Danny 1 draft - high school romance (future Danny stories feature adult vampire hunter), bullying, sexual predator (not much in scenes described but alluded to, and physical violence and verbal threats), era typical homophobia biphobia (set in 2011), realism (probably the most realistic of the bunch), underage drinking, happy ending (yay for that). Danny books 2 3 4 will be more urban fantasy/action setting, vampires and fae and demons introduced to the story world, warnings get heavier for actual deaths in plot. I'm still writing Danny 1 so thats what I got open for reader impressions at the moment. Khan - action, fantasy, legend, slavery, violence, non human society with different values (no humans at all in this story just faeries and dragons), political, corecion, hopeful bittersweet ending (the leads die - most leads in this die, but most leads become gods Or reincarnate so? Also the heroes do accomplish their main goal). Freyna - fantasy, political, action, set in faerie realm (so few humans). Sad ending (its a cautionary tale for other characters alive later in the series universe) but although both leads die i will say the heroine accomplishes her goal. Just with the cost of her life. Angst, doomed romance (a Highest - think fae king - falls for Freyna, causing a cascade of increasing danger), political thriller (various parties vying for power, or survival, or both). Action story typical violence, sadistic villain/love interest, non human society with its own norms, murder (what with people seizing power or trying to protect themselves). Khan and Freyna are in progress. Danny 1 is half finished, fully plotted I'm just finishing the remaining chapters so curious on impressions.

omg i wrote that so long ago and my brain is kinda fried so i'll be a little brief. may expand on it later but eh its all good. these are just rambling thoughts

a lot of asian rep in media mostly revolves around the east asian experience, which is valid bc god knows they need it, except often times it leaves out literally everyone else in its wake, or it keeps grouping up certain asians together. currently south east asian cultures are particular victims of this. But sometimes what ends up happening is that there is a "fantasy asia" world where the world is not technically Asia, but it might as well be given the inspiration behind it. in my personal opinion its kinda orientalist and a bit fetishistic of the 'exoticness' of asian cultures. Like it wants asia but without all of the real people in it

like for example the world in raya and the last dragon. it was great seeing someone who looked at me on screen but goddamn they couldn't at least set it in south east asia, let alone have distinct cultures instead of just taking little aspects of culture and making fantasy. it was a great movie for diaspora sure, but anyone actually from south east asia was disappointed. Xiran Jay Zhao compiled a two part video on it that elaborates more on it better than i could right now–i say compiled bc she doesnt do much talking in them aside from the beginning of the video; everyone else talking in it is south-east asian.

another fantasy world heavily inspired by Asia is ofc atla's world. my problem is that While its a good representation of east asian cultures, south east, south asian, northern asians, and western asians are left behind.

and what bothers me is that there are many places where they can fit in. Like the swampy tribe areas and the ancient firebenders from the dragons era feel like they should be south east asian inspired somewhat, and if you wanted to make a commentary on how these lands have been taken over and colonized (or at least there was an attempt on colonization) would be interesting. or how it feels like it makes more sense for katara and sokka to be more north asian inspired than american inspired. and of course there was the one (1) south asian inspired character who was. more of a caricature than anything else. im not saying the indigenous american rep is bad. obviously any representation is great, especially for indigenous americans. But if you are going to create a clearly "asian inspired" world (like nearly every aspect of this world is asian in culture and the main character is clearly a buddhist monk, it would be hard to argue otherwise), then at least take inspiration from asian cultures?

(side note people making fun of the swampy fog people is not great. does not feel great. regardless of whether they believe they're south east asian rainforests or the american bayou)

other small things are more of fan issues than creator issues. specifically the way people treat some anime characters like they're white instead of japanese/asian and then hold them to white cultural standards. all might is a great example, where despite being named Toshinori Yagi and being from a world where the mc has green eyes and green hair, people still think hes white bc hes blonde haired blue eyes and loves america? which–side note, you dont have to be an american to love america, lots of older people who got really into the american dream still like america. another thing was when i read a bnha fanfic that described someone as looking "asian" which. yeah i sure hope so. the story takes place in japan. and then theres some people not recognizing that asians all look very different from one another even if they're from the same area of the world.

more recently ive noticed the fandom racism in dungeon meshi specifically towards shuro, who despite being from a fantasy world is clearly japanese, and from a japanese-inspired culture. and its his culture which leads him to respond to laios in the way that he does. im not saying its racist to be upset that shuro responded to laios that way, but like. different cultures come with different cultural views and different ways of responding. shuro and laios come from two very different cultures. it happens.

I think if we do turn a bunch of people into dragons but leave a bunch of people as human, and we don't want to break history too unbelievably in this era, we are probably going to have to treat dragon-marriage as equivalent to human marriage. But then some of the humans can also be simultaneously dragon married and human married probably.

Also, thinking of the Clary clan as some kind of urban dragon family is kind of funny.

The younger and smaller dragons can learn enough dexterity with their claws to flip the pages of a book, to manipulate a quill, to peruse their own correspondence privately. The larger ones boast more strength and fire, flying higher but not further, but their claws that can take down horses and monsters with a single slash lose the precision for such delicate affairs.

Perhaps that is why the dragon Soult, once called "Jean-de-Dieu" by his family, admires the paintings he is so well known for collecting. No dragon as he can craft such deft and delicate brush strokes.

It is in the presence of these paintings that he asks his ADCs to place the letters before him, so he may read with eyes as sharp as an eagle's sight. But he must ask them to turn the pages, and he must ask them to draft his replies, and ever since the dragon grew beyond the size of a horse he has been so very frustrated with this lack of privacy.

But he must do with what he can.

Today it is Saint-Chamans at his side, and Saint-Chamans can hardly hide his confusion as he reads the letter. "Your excellency, this is a children's tale- why are you asking after such things?"

The great maroon dragon lets out a huff of hot air. He is not interested either in fairy stories and children's games, but… There is a line of inquiry I am pursuing personally.

He does have his valet perform this job for him, often. He does not strictly need the ADCs to do this.

But the valet is friendly with Louise, and he cannot have her worry.

And if there is a chance that one day he may come up to her and embrace her as an equal, then he must pursue it.

Thought process here:

Dragons in Pern are telepathic as in they communicate by speaking in your head -> to really differentiate this AU from Temeraire, we can focus more on Weird Magic but not to the extent that it's Extremely High Fantasy -> telepathy can be extrapolated to other things -> how do we get large dragons participating in city life????

So

Dragons here can telepathically communicate with people that they can see and that are in a small radius around them, equivalent to shouting at them

Dragons with their favourite people can extend that reach further and can communicate with them even without seeing them in that extended reach

Berthier Dragon is a weirdo who has managed to have a very large range with people he isn't connected to and can also multitask a little bit so he's. like a phone operator. yes this does change a bunch of things to have that instant feedback but I think both he and Napoleon are aware of the dangers of relying on a single tiny dragon

(obviously berthier dragon is. in love with madam visconti. and has a shrine to her.)

But what if dragons with their favourite people can not just pass on their communications but other senses

It may depend on the dragon? Some can send impressions of the emotions they feel, some can send sensory information, but also it might be fun if the human can send stuff back

this is a little funky but I am imagining that some dragon-human pairs can have this weird kind of consensual possession thing going on where the dragon "rides" along with the human's senses

So human cities are not really built for really large dragons - the edges of the city do have dragon and human accommodations, but only dragons horse sized and smaller can really go into the middle of the city

The "riding along" or weird possession thing is basically, large dragons who are too big to go into cities and ballrooms can "ride along" with their favourite people and experience things like extremely expensive balls

To prevent this from being used for spycraft too much, maybe the possessed person's eyes turn the colour of the dragon's

this is kinda creepy and weird but i think it can be romantic, and of course the possessed person can stop the possession at any time, the dragon doesn't actually have control over the human's actions and can only just experience sensory input and telepathically speak to them, so the human has to convey what the dragon's saying

And finally, to complete my yearly game posts, here's what I plan on playing in the year 2024:

1. Assemble With Care - a short little game I should be able to knock out in a few hours but I picked it up in a bundle and I have wanted to play it so I will try to knock it out this year.

2. I'm more than half way done with Baldur's Gate 3 but I likely will be playing it through January. I hope to finish it at least once before P3R.

3. Bloodborne - help.

4. Borderlands 2 - since I had such a blast playing Borderlands with my boyfriend this year, I'm looking forward to giving this game a second chance and hopefully enjoying it much more.

5. Borderlands 3 - a little less hopeful for this one, since I haven't heard much good about it, but might as well knock out the main franchise.

6. Boyfriend Dungeon - I just got this for Christmas and I'm excited for the concept of romancing my weapons :)

7. I'm also more than halfway through Catherine, so I also intend to finish that in the coming month.

8. Cat Museum - something cute and short I picked up on mega sale and want to make an effort to play this year.

9. The Coffin of Andy and Leyley - I actually have no idea what this game is about or if I'll like it but it was a gift so dammit I'll play it.

10. Dragon's Dogma 2 - Dragon's Dogma is easily in my top 10 games of all time, and I am SO hype for this game. The only downside is it's coming in March, and the first quarter of 2024 is pretty PACKED with games for me.

11. Etrian Odyssey - because I never finished it when I owned it on DS but I'm in my Atlus Games era rn so

12. Far: Lone Sails - I was drawn to this game for the art and it seems like a quick little experience of a game.

13. Final Fantasy 16 DLC - blanketing over the currently available DLC and the up and coming DLC.

14. Hades - a carry over from 2023's list but THIS WILL BE THE YEAR (maybe)

15. Haven - I don't think (?) this game is very long but it looks very heartwarming so I'm here for it this year.

16. Little Nightmares 2 - another fairly short game that I have no reason not to play, especially when I'm obsessed with the first one.

17. Little Nightmares 3 - I don't know what the release date is yet but like Borderlands let's try to close out a franchise!

18. Metaphor: ReFantazio - it doesn't even have a release date and I'm already excited about it.

21. Nier Automata - another carry over from 2023, but I have a good feeling about it this year.

19. NEO: The World Ends With You - I hear only good things about this game but I will be walking into it 98% blind.

20. Nightingale - Idk how much I'll actually play this game but my friend and I have been watching its development for years and we are READY

tales of symphonia: literally close to my entire psyche is stored in this game. if you've not played it, the remaster is about to come out on ps4 and the (not great but workable) pc port is out. look, i can't make you play tales of symphonia, but if you like jrpgs, the entire modern era of jrpgs pulls directly from symphonia, including an ENORMOUS amount of ff14. there is a straight line between tales of symphonia and emet-selch. tales of symphonia is as fundamental to my spirit as being jewish is. that's not an exaggeration.

trinity blood: yeah like half of my sexuality is from trinity blood (light novels, not manga or anime. the anime is garbage.) and im so mad it's not been relicensed for english release since tokyopop folded. uh. yeah. anyway.

dragonlance: i feel normal ways about dragonlance (lie). please read dragonlance. if you need a place to start, either "the time of the twins", "dragons of autumn twilight" or "the soulforge" (i recommend "time" first)

the dark tower: i will never reread these books, and not bc they're not good, but because they sure did uh. god. wow. they sure did fuck me up. "wizard and glass" did irreparable things to me. after i finished the series i didn't read anything for a full year because i was still so profoundly shocked by these books.

another piece of the puzzle here is an evolution of literature and media surrounding video game narrative between the east and the west.

japanese literature:

in the 1900s, lots of japanese literature was told in 1st person pov, especially the big influential deeply philosophical ones. im talking I Am A Cat by Natsume Soseki, and No Longer Human by Osamu Dazai.

this deep philosophical "what is the self in relation to the environment" thing gets reflected a lot in those works, where they often break down the conditions of what defines a human and their life and how absurd it is. the idea of 1 person being multi faceted was often discussed in these works as well, but it seems to be coming from a butt fuck ton of social anxiety and depression. (especially mr Osamu Dazai.)

this resulted in more works and discussions surrounding the same topic because people very astutely noted that capitalism was making their life rough. and the whole post war reality thing. and then that led to a lot of other writers joining in and making major contributions to the whole.

lots of people were not mentally ok and that resonated deeply. so there was a lot of dialogue going on. at least between the writers.

bc in one of the example above, I Am A Cat had no real spoken dialogue from the main character, who is a cat. it's extremely introspective and cynical.

(and also im pretty sure 99% of modern light novels out there are written in 1st person too, though this comes later and is tangentially related. consider the avg appetite of the anime fan and how it might be related. The Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya (debuted 2003). My Teenage Romantic Comedy SNAFU (debuted 2011). That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime (2013). etc etc are all written in 1st person.)

for the RPG side of writing:

in one hand, silent protags in both sides started out in early video game writing due to the lack of support for text. english and a lot of other related texts only needed to care for the alphabet and some characters, but japanese had to deal with kanji.

there is more than 50,000 (!!!) kanjis in existence on top of hiraganas and katakanas. theres just no way to fit all of that in a NES game cart. even if we go down to words commonly used, that's still a few thousand too many. so for a long time the trend was to write a silent protag and keep things simple, since complex story didnt start rocketing until more memory could be fit in. robust storytelling started happening around the SNES era, but by then people realized the way to write interesting worlds in games was to build interesting characters with the limitations they had. relational character writing, yes, but a lot of tricks were used to tell a story.

(and the reason why tricks were used, and why people pushed stories as hard as they did was bc in part, lots of people who had a hard time finding jobs with their art related passion ended up in the vg industry. japan's 1990s' economic collapse caused them to really dip into the aforementioned elements of the idea of humans trying to live in self made systems that seem hostile. it's why works like Fire Emblem and Xenogears and Final Fantasy went brrr)

anyway. the story in these games then can be summarized as character driven.

meanwhile a lot of western games ran into the same, but less limitations with far less characters needed to be shoved in the memory. yet, western RPGs seem interested in building a world around the protag, for the protag. as a result robust story telling was way more self-inserty than the japanese variety in the extreme case, like Wizardry, or really any sort of Dungeons & Dragons sandbox variety. Ultima and Runescape too. those were a thing. are STILL a thing.

so western games of the 1980s leaned towards more 'make your own story' kinda deal. so these are more player driven.

combined result:

whoever wants to try their hand at writing any works that hints at any philosophical stuff or ideas or even religion will then use those literature as a reference, and the result is.... Persona. Fire Emblem. Zelda. Final Fantasy. Guilty Gear.

but what im getting at here is that religion is not the sole reasoning for why 'self-inserts' in japanese video games are only hinged on differences in religion. there was a whole movement of literature going on.

all this to say why it's mostly Japan and not the rest of Asia following suit. (As an example, hong Kong films) there just wasn't the same literature dialogue happening on the same scale with the same accessibility, and the same post WW2 economic stuff

I don't know if this could be helpful information, but I'm a mix (half Chinese half irish) and my mbti is INFJ. my hobby is reading and the fantasy genre has a special place in my heart, when it comes to nonfictional books– it bores me out a little. I love spending my time alone by figuring out my preferences, and decorating my stuff based on my personality and likes (my room, my phone, my outfits etc) so if you were to be my friend, most of the things that are called 'mine' will have at least a little bit touch of me. it may sound weird but i like to make myself my own best friend, always want to know myself more and want to keep improving myself as a better person. i also love to keep my surroundings neat and tidy.

im quite shy, but with people im comfy with im neither quiet nor reserved, i can be a little playful and childish sometimes. sometimes i could easily make new friends but depends on their persona, if they make me uncomfy then i'll step away from them— e.g. I'm not comfy with people who use vulgar words so often. my friends and family, i treasure them a lot as they're one of my sources of happiness. my younger sister, she's artistic and any of her artwork given to me like crochets and bracelets, i do wear them from time to time. I'm also a cat person and i have two cats that i have been raising since they were only two weeks old. i love raising kittens and i wish to do it again sometime in the future.

𝐀𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐬

You got to Hogwarts in 1940, two years after Tom Riddle got sorted.

Your friends say your eyes were literally sparkling with excitement as you got sorted into Hufflepuff.

You were extremely excited to live out your fantasy dream - meeting elves and dwarves, learning about dragons and magic.

Turns out that studying dragons and reading about adventures with dragons are quite different.

You became known for being a voracious reader, conquering nearly all fiction books in the school library. But with the non-fiction from the other half of the library untouched.

Even if you find nonfiction to be boring, your reading skill translated into you having great comprehension and a quick grasp on magical concepts from reading.

Your best subject is History, since that is the closest one can get to fantasy stories in Hogwarts' subjects.

Professor Binns adores having you in class, so it hurts him whenever he catches you falling asleep during his most boring lectures.

You are spectacular at being imaginative and creative, so you are incredible at Transfiguration as well. Your ability to visualise objects in your brain means that your transfiguration always comes out perfect.

Professor Dumbledore enjoys watching you excel in his class, though every once in a while he makes a subtle suggestion to read nonfiction books.

𝐏𝐞𝐭𝐬

The school allows one pet to be brought to school. But there was NO way you were going to choose one cat to bring.

As soon as you learned a transfiguration spell, you transfigured your other cat into a book over the break so that you can sneak them in.

There has been a rumoured sighting of a book with four cat legs scuttling around the Hogwarts grounds.

You insisted that it was abuse to separate children from their mother.

You loyal Hufflepuff dormmates agrees, and kept it a secret from the professors.

Your cats adore being so close to you all year round and making new cat friends.

(Although your parents are a bit lonely from not only you, but the cats leaving the nest as well. Word is, they're considering getting a new kitten sometime

which you are super excited about and won't stop talking about it to your friends.

You may or may not have joked about stealing your parents' kitten the minute they get one so that you can raise one again.)

𝐍𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬

You are already adept at navigating between two cultures, so you have no problem bridging the magical world and muggle culture as well.

It's important for anyone from whatever background to feel welcomed and celebrated at Hogwarts, so you invite your friends to join in your cultural/familial traditions.

Mooncake festival happens typically a few weeks after you begin your year. Though you do need to watch out for werewolves.

Everyone loves celebrating St. Patrick's Day and Lunar New Year, including some professors who endorse and participates.

The Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival was extremely popular amongst students, but not so much by the professors. According to Headmaster Dippet, the students don't need any more reason to encourage their raging hormones.

𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐌𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐜

Thanks to the time you spend getting to know yourself, you have incredible control over your own magic.

Your wand knows this and trusts you completely.

Since you know what you're capable of, you never have accidents with your magic, gaining you a reputation to be quite a powerful and reliable spellcaster.

You can perform a range of spells, varying from extremely powerful spells to spells that require precision.

𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐓𝐨𝐦

You know Tom as some courteous prodigy, 2 years above you.

As someone in a different house and a year, there isn't that much chance to interact with him.

But, one time in your third year, you found yourself in a bothersome situation of being surrounded by a few older Slytherins.

The walk back from the library was quite deserted so close to curfew at night.

These Slytherins, bored and maybe drunk with too much butterbeer, started speaking vulgarly towards you.

You were visibly uncomfortable, trying to evade them as you headed back towards the dorm.

But it doesn't help that both Slytherin and Hufflepuff dorms are in the dungeon.

That was when Tom happened to pass by. Even against his housemates, he was strict and just, scolding them that it was inappropriate to speak to anyone that way.

He deducted a substantial amount of points of Slytherin and sent them back to their dorm.

It was then you noticed his prefect badge, presumably on a patrol.

He apologised on behalf of his housemates, and offered to walk you back to your dorm.

Era 1

Exikas Bloodreed (he/him)- a blood elf scholar and servant to two Tempulsars. He was the first to figure out that Thrae was doomed to destroy itself and died trying (and failing) to stop it. I like to call him Mister Hubris!!

Era 2

Evie (she/her)- Human paladin, I wrote her character because i thought the concept of a guy finding a legendary sword that no man could wield, being able to wield it, and just going "oh fuck i guess im trans now". She ends up sacrificing herself to save her valley from a blight.

Callister (he/him)- Fellow paladin and Evie's closest friend. He's like the fantasy version of that one dude who brings his guitar everywhere, if that guy had a huge sword.

Joseph Anderglow (he/him)- Noble heir turned gunslinging mercenary, left his wife to go on this adventure and also because he did not love her and still feels really guilty about it. Callister's future husband.

Era 3 (i have SO many characters for this era but youre only hearing about a few of them)

Gwynlais, The Frozen Prince (he/him)- first son of Kantomere ( and the only son of Gelfia, removed from the Draconic Homeland at an early age and grew up apart from his brothers. Arguably the rightful heir to the draconic throne. Really sweet, spent his life learning about the world.

Throxen, The Fern Prince (he/him)- the middle brother, son of Kantomere and Langalia, currently in line to inherit the throne. A fierce fighter and honorable dragon.

Elsewynd, Prince of Clouds (he/him)- the youngest of the three brothers and Grand Archivist of Drakenspiel. Awkward, flamboyant, and excitable.

Gelfia, The Starlit Despot (she/her)- Kantomere's former mate, a vicious and power-hungry dragon. She was banished for killing Hulamino's (Kantomere's brother) mate and son, and is currently at war with Drakenspiel because she wants Gwynlais to ascend to the throne.

Kantomere, King of Storms (he/him)- Draconic King. A strong, stoic, and fair leader, he still harbors guilt for what Gelfia did.

Era 4

Topher (they/them)- mostly-human, runs a small store in Star Creek during the summers and is one of the only humans allowed to stay there. Bitten by an angel last year, currently fighting off that infection. Anxious but friendly.

The Wizard (he/him)- half-woodfolk, protector of Star Creek and a powerful potionsmith. Created the magical protections surrounding Star Creek, removed its old, corrupt leader from power, and procMute. Aloof and eccentric. Topher's boyfriend.

Alice (she/it)- ex-journalist, fully converted angel. Got bitten by an angel while writing a piece on a nearby town overrun by an angelic infestation and REALLY leaned into the whole "Angel of Death" thing after the fact. Aggressive, violent, and fiercely protective.

Era 5 (this is my favorite era!! im telling you about all the characters i made up for it!! some of the descriptions are real short though)

Lucinder Aldebaran (she/her)- Shapeshifting Commander of DAWNBREAKER, a diplomat, former Creation Guardian, and master strategist. I wrote a whole thing about her a little while back and you can find that here.

Olivia Morcan (she/her)- Darksteel elf and leader of the Creation Guard. Tormented by all the people she let die and desperate to sacrifice herself. World's first childless female absentee father. Lucinder's former rival, they fuck sometimes. I love her so much.

Figus Summerpelt (he/they)- Woodfolk, Lucinder's childhood friend. Pretty much stays out of DAWNBREAKER and lives with his partner in a small cottage at the edge of The Hollow. Calm, wise historian.

Calyphonicus Blister (he/him)- Transgender. Half-Jackal. Doomed by the narrative. Flying too close to the sun. What CAN'T he do. Leader of project CATALYST, feels woefully unqualified for his job and is permanently and horribly overworked.

Thorn (they/them)- skeleton, DAWNBREAKER's airspace commander. Nonbinary because they've been dead for so long they forgot they had a gender. Watched their entire friend group become "boring" and is terrified of the same thing happening to them.

DAWNBREAKER's coolest undead (thorn's former friend group, I'm lumping them all together because I can) Xelia (she/her) vampire slut and professional Hot Woman, Hawk (he/him) chill stoner zombie dude, and Ambrosius West (he/she) angel from the moon and Hawk's boyfriend.
