AUGUST 2023 WRAP UP
[ loved liked okay no thanks DNF (reread) bookclub*]
Witch Week | A Perilous Undertaking | 2 AM At the Cat's Pajamas | The Last Sun | The Lives of Christopher Chant | The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo* | (The Angel of the Crows) | The Enchanted April | The Art of Prophecy | A Curious Beginning | Q's Legacy | The Grimoire of Grave Fates | Charmed Life | Ocean's Echo | (Band Sinister) | (Unfit to Print) | Camp Damascus | Wanted, A Gentleman | Translation State | The Mistress of Bhatia House
I’m late I’m late I’m late! Oops
It’s only a month late, right? ‘Only’ lol, work has been exhausting! Anyways:
At this point I wonder if Ann Leckie can ever do wrong, Translation State was good! I was completely enthralled, which is all I ask, even if I don’t get as passionate about it as the main trilogy.
I continued the KJ Charles reading, with these supposed stand alones that are also kind of related? Honestly it’s no less of a stretch than Society of Gentlemen to Lilywhite Boys, so I don’t know why she can’t officially list them together. Anyways, mostly fine, and Band Sinister is still a delight!
Camp Damascus…I’m thrilled for Chuck, really, and I think he’s a delight to follow, but this one wasn’t for me. Religious trauma is turning out to be a hard no.
Ocean’s Echo was good! In some ways I definitely thought it was better than Winter’s Orbit - miscommunication is the worst I’m sorry, this story was more consistently engaging! I just like the characters from WO a bit more.
Chrestomanci! I’ve been going by the suggested reading order on Goodreads, and while I wasn’t particularly enthused by Charmed Life, once I had a grasp on the world the other books have been fun! Im very sad this might be my last DWJ, as I seem to have exhausted my library’s collection of her audiobooks :(
Grimoire of Grave Fates had a really interesting premise that lured me in, despite my reservations - an anthology where all the stories work together to solve the mystery of a murder at a magic boarding school? I thought it worked fairly well (and could definitely spin itself out into a series of novels), but just ok for me. Maybe one day I’ll finally concede I can’t read YA or boarding school books anymore.
Q’s Legacy was the last (I think) of the 84 Charing Cross Road books, and honestly the worst. It had its interesting moments, but it lacked the cohesion of the other two, speed,-running the before and during of those stories, to then spend the second half on the adaptations. It was not at all what the descriptions led me to expect. Maybe worth a single read but not a revisit.
I will also be honest, I didn’t really like the first Veronica Speedwell! The plot felt a bit contrived, and Veronica was so blunt as to almost read as rude or mean. Also very unexpectedly…clinically horny? Does that make sense? I’m not quite sure what prompted me to continue, but I’m now several books in and enjoying it! To be blunt myself, the historic setting is just set dressing, the plots can feel contrived, the mysteries are mediocre, but the real draw is the Veronica and Stoker show once they get themselves settled in and comfortable with each other. It’s a hoot.
I’d heard good things about The Art of Prophecy, but I still didn’t know quite what to expect going in. It was wonderful. Maybe a little long, but if you’re looking for a fantastic fantasy with lots of fight sequences, no romance, and some fascinating characters, this is a great read. The sequel comes out soon and I can only hope it doesn’t take as long for my library to get the audiobook as it did for this one.
I don’t know where I first found An Enchanted April, but it’s been on my TBR for a little bit, and I thought it would be the perfect fit for my classics challenge I gave myself this year! It wasn’t what I expected at all - it’s entirely character driven and very focused on their flaws, and the entire first half I thought I was going to hate it. But the second half, there’s a twist, almost, born of some very naïve optimism that nonetheless works out. Very improbably, but I was happy for them, you funky little weirdos.
What can I say about The Angel of the Crows except that it is still very good! It’s maybe lost a little of the shine it held when I got obsessed with it for a few months last year, but it is definitely now one of my comfort books. I really ought to read more canon Holmes though lol.
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo was, to be fair, one of my suggestions for book club. It was OK, but there were definitely parts that really did not work for me, the frame narrative in particular. The other members of the club really liked it but I don’t have any plans to read more of the authors work.
I’m almost tempted to put The Last Sun last just so I can yell more. I’d heard such good things about this series, but turns out my expectations were a bit skewed - it is not historical or secondary fantasy world, oops. So we got off to a bit of a rough start, not to mention all of the Capital Words. Not usually a good sign. And while I still wouldn’t say I love the worldbuilding necessarily, or that these are the next great work of fantasy, the action is really great, and the characters are flipping fantastic. You’ve got a pair of 30 year olds who are bad ass fighters, have a traumatic past, are immature assholes, can be so so kind, and accidentally adopt a posse of troubled teenagers? Sign me up, I love them, this reminds me so much of my days reading tons of Teen Wolf fanfic AUs.
My history with 2 AM At the Cat's Pajamas is that they cannot stop recommending this thing on the Book Riot podcasts. When I found a copy at Goodwill, I thought surely it’s meant to be! Well. It was not bad, but it was not great. I don’t know. It just wasn’t for me and I will not be keeping my copy. I probably should have DNF’d it, but I continued in hope.
Only one actual DNF this month though, The Mistress of Bhatia House - the newest Perveen Mistri book. I was actually fairly excited for it despite my reservations about the earlier books, but I hit a mental roadblock with this one. There was some contrived feeling tension with her sister-in-law, but really, I realized that one of my main problems with this series is that, despite being in a very precarious social position, Perveen is just incredibly reckless - usually in the name of doing good! - but it just hit all the wrong nerves at the moment. I’m hoping there will be a better time to read this, but not right now.

5 and 6!
5- What genre did you read the most of? according to storygraph, "LGBTQIA+" closely followed by "YA". I reread hunger games this year and also see: habit of getting random graphic novels or comics runs from the library bc they looked vaguely interesting. dont have anything to say abt the gay ppl see rest of blog
6 -Was there anything you meant to read, but never got to? oh loads. my tbr list is ever-growing but i checked out a number of books i never even opened and made it abt a quarter thru war and peace before falling too far behind. other highlights include gone girl, between the world and me, jurassic park, how far the light reaches, and story of your life and others (i did read the titular story but had to return before getting to the others). maybe next year tho! and i do have some im planning to read in december even!

This is why I don't set yearly goals for myself, because I can't just do it normally, I have to complete them as-fast-as-I-can. (As with everything really) (teachers would say it's not a contest to gets things done first, and no it's not, but I'm always trying to complete everything as fast and efficient as I can and IT IS a character flaw of mine... so sorry)
Anyway, my reading goal was 50 which is way too low, so that was problem one. And basically this has literally turned into a speed-run of how fast I can complete my year goal. I have no other personality right now because of this
So where am I now? 2 or 3 chapters from finishing book number 37. I only have 13 more books to go. At this rate, I'll be done with the year goal in April.

traveling is exhausting, so you and alex decided to keep the next day chill, by taking him to run some errands at one of america's most important institutions: costco.
you woke up WAY before alex did,, it makes no sense
the time difference between mexico and california is not even that bad, alex is just a sleepy bum
when he finally does wake up, you grab a quick snack/mini lunch from a mcdonald’s drive thru
“remember when you tried mcdonald’s for the first time? you were like a teenager and you swore you would never eat mcdonald’s again in your life?”
“yeah?”
“how’s that going for you?”
after scarfing down the crispy fries and the not-really-chicken chicken nuggets, you drive down to costco and while out your costco card like a badass
“you know they have costco in mexico right?”
“… no i did not.”
you have your grocery list in one hand and are pushing the cart in through the packed warehouse with alex fearfully following behind
“why is it so packed in here?”
“it’s america. everywhere is packed.”
alex actually doesn’t appreciate the random strangers poking him and pushing him around, frequently complaining about it
so, to solve it, you give him the cart
which for some reason instills this weird power in him that makes the crowds part like the Red Sea
now alex is starting to have some fun
you guys buy a shit ton of snacks (that you absolutely DO NOT need)
load up on drinks aka caprisuns
and practically fill your empty bellies with the free samples being given out
alex likes to lift his feet off the ground and let the cart roll forward whenever you guys happen to stumble upon an empty aisle
he almost crashes like every single time and every single time, you laugh your ass off
“please don’t ride the carts, it’s not safe.”
y’all literally get SCOLDED by an employee once alex bumps into a crate of snapple juices
“ALEX. THEYRE GOING TO TAKE AWAY MY COSTCO CARD BECAUSE OF YOU.”
“i mean… is that really the worst thing in the world?”
“alex you don’t understand… costco is the holy land. it is the one institution keeping this country afloat. and you haven’t even had the pizza yet.”
you wander into the books section, where you find piles and piles ranging from sappy-gross-walmart-romances-with-half-naked-people-on-the-covers to booktok sensations
as you read through the synopsis of two books, debating which one to add to your never ending TBR pile back home, alex finds the giant display of flower bouquets
he takes his time sniffing them, analyzing each color, and feeling the petals to make sure they’re real and not plastic
a lot of the bouquets had already been taken and the leftovers consisted of broken stems, some wilted petals and empty spaces where it appeared that certain flowers had been taken
there was one bouquet that stood out to alex
small but pretty; a bunch of red-tipped yellow roses that, unbeknownst to alex, symbolized friendship and falling in love something he would learn a lot about during his trip here
he picked out the bouquet as you picked out a winner from your book debate
he presented them to you
“as a thank you for introducing me to the heart of corporate america.”
“you’re so sweet, i might cry and bottle the tears to sell for profit.”
you laughed as you walked to a register to pay
“ok now, if you think this pizza is bad, then our friendship is effectively ruined and you’ll be sleeping on the street the rest of the time you’re here.”
“WHY IS THIS SLICE SO FUCKING HUGE?”
“… america…”
the two of you sat in one of the small picnic table in the designated food court area at the entrance of the costco
alex was trying the pizza
“actually it’s not bad.”
“i’ll take that as a win.”
you guys laugh and talk so much while you eat, it takes you an hour to finish a single slice
once you finish your pizza, you continue talking on your way to your car and won’t shut up to even take a breath
childhood memories, favorite songs, movies, shows, books, trauma, food
the different topics are a rollercoaster of emotions, some more difficult to discuss than others, but for some reason, with alex, even the hardest of stories is easy to tell when he’s the one listening
by the end of the night, you’re on the couch, he’s on the floor sitting on a bunch of blankets and the tv is on, but no one is paying attention
the groceries sit on the dining table, waiting for a lull in conversation to finally be unpacked
the hours tick down, but only certain fairy and cold items actually make it into the fridge by the end of the night
“so whyd your last relationship end?”
the clock read 12:17 pm and neither of you were ready to go to sleep just yet, especially with the conversation now taking a much more serious, much more interesting turn at this late hour
“honestly… i think she was cheating on me.”
“NO”
“yeah… i never found out if she was, but she started dating some other guy really soon after we had broken up”
“im so sorry alex…”
“yeah…”
a worry that had slowly settled in your head was that alex maybe wasnt as comfortable telling you certain things and you felt like you were pressuring him, and he had to give in, considering he was staying in your home
but he felt no pressure. none at all.
in fact, he was more surprised at how easy it was to tell you all this stuff. and how much he wanted to tell you, but only you. he wanted to talk to you all the time and only stop if it meant he got to listen to you speak for hours on end.
after noticing your frown, he was quick to try and turn it upside down
“b-but don’t feel sorry for me! honestly, i think i was gonna break up with her anyways.”
“how come?”
he stayed silent at first, almost embarrassed that he was having such a cheesy thought but he knew you wouldn’t laugh, so he felt comfortable telling you
“she wasn’t… ‘the one’ you know? you know if you’re meant to be with someone for a long time and for a while, i didn’t feel like that with her… maybe that’s why i thought she was cheating on me. i needed more of a reason than just ‘she’s not the one’ to break up with her.”
you listened intensely
you’d never thought you’d hear alex, of all people, get so philosophical over the concept of “the one”
it was remarkable
“so… how do you know if someone is the one? is there a way to know, like, for sure that this person is the person you’re meant to spend the rest of your life with?”
once again, he sat in silence.
he pondered.
it was funny to see alex ponder.
he glanced around the room when he did. at the ceiling. at the tv. at you.
he stopped at you.
he stared at you.
and you at him.
as you awaited his answer, you examined the little features on his face. the ones that no video camera or phone facetime could ever do justice.
he had much better skin than you thought he would.
each little freckle reminded you of a star.
the little scar on his lip from when tiger scratched him on stream was a funny reminder of what it was like having a cat.
every little detail of him made you smile.
he finally answered
“i think you just… know.”

Hi! Wondering if you have some wlw books to come in 2019 to add to my TBR list? Thanks again for the great recs :)
I do! Keep an eye out for Tell Me How You Really Feel by Aminah Mae Safi, Hot Dog Girl by Jen Dugan, The Afterward by EK Johnston, The Weight of the Stars by K. Ancrum, We Set the Dark on Fire by Tehlor Kay Mejia, and Starworld by Audrey Coulthurst and Paula Garner (note that this one is not a romance) for sure.
A few I haven’t read yet that I’m really excited about are Sugar Run by Mesha Maren, Once Ghosted, Twice Shy by Alyssa Cole, Mostly Dead Things by Kristen Arnett, Going Off Script by Jen Wilde, and The Princess and the Fangirl by Ashley Poston. And, as a fan of Of Fire and Stars by Audrey Coulthurst, I’m psyched for the sequel coming out in August.
Also, SORRY BUT I’M GOING TO BE DOING THIS ALL YEAR - there are several wlw stories in His Hideous Heart, the Edgar Allan Poe-retelling anthology I’m editing that releases on September 24. As they are Poe stories, they definitely do not all have happy endings, but obviously I think they’re all worth a read :D

hello ethan! i missed you!
i kind of thought you don't smoke, i don't know why. i do smoke, but i am trying to do it less. because it is so expensive, and, of course, unhealthy.
god, maurice. i have always wanted to watch the movie and also read the book, but they are both very expensive in my country, but i will! the book is on my tbr-list for two years now... dead poets society is my favourite movie of all time. and, also, i fell into my dark academia phase again??? partly because of you and your blog... you won't belive me, but i have never seen the lion king... i'm the youngest one of my siblings and i only watched what they watched. i always wanted to watch it but i never got to choose the movie...
one of my faves also is the miseducation of cameron post. both the movie and the book. i am a huge fan of back to the future as well! also, a stupid one, superbad. it's so funny and i love bill hader..
oh, how'd you like the fs movies? which one was your favourite? i'm sure we are soulmates, it's not just coincidence, dear. about dorian grey, i will get to it and i'll tell you when i will.
oh god, who is your favourite doctor? i can't believe you're into doctor who also. and you mentioned halloween, i don't know what my costume will be yet :( based on your profile pics, you would look amazing as four!!!!!!! can't wait for it.
Ii'm fine. for the first time in weeks i feel truly okay! also, i didnt have too much of a hangover! i love talking to you and just letting all my thoughts out. hope you are doing alright! and i hope you're happy to receive my ask <3
-🐝
hi! its good to hear from you, as always. im glad to hear youre trying to give up smoking. i know it can be hard but in the long run it's probably worth it. i grew up around smokers so i never personally had the desire to i guess. I'll put a keep reading here, so that I'm not flooding people's dashes with my incoherent rambles.
getting a physical copy of maurice is really strangely difficult? firstly, it's expensive and always sold out? but anyway, i read a digital version but i do hope to get my own physical copy mainly for annotation reasons and because certain books, certain stories, i just really like to have them close by. i keep the goldfinch next to my bed eventho i've read it 3 times already because sometimes i just itch? to get my hands on it and to feel the story in my hands again. i hope you get to it soon as well, i hope one day we can discuss these books together as well. im so happy you like dps! (do you maybe run a dps oriented blog here... my detective skills are perking up) that film really does mean a lot to me and honestly, just as with the goldfinch, and interestingly you as well, i can't seem to get enough. no bother that you've yet to see the lion king, it'll always be there and i hope that when you do eventually watch it, that it reminds you of me.
(also i can't believe i dragged u back into the dark academia thing, wow my power. i never really considered myself a dark academia blog because i'm so all over the place but i suppose we do align well with that general sub-culture? aesthetic?)
the miseducation of cameron post! i am going to watch it right after i send this your way, i've been meaning to for ages since so many friends have said good things about it (and queer media is so crucial to me) and now that you've expressed your admiration for it i must. as for superbad and the back to the future films- these are classics and in my opinion great comfort films. i never got overly into the lore of the bttf films but theyre entertaining and fun, every rewatch remains enjoyable.
my favourite fear street was probably the second one, i loved the energy and the soundtrack and how fast paced it was. im a sucker for nonlinear progressions so this series really nestled into my heart really quickly. which one did you like the best?
and doctor who? it literally blew my mind when you brought it up last time. my favourite doctor (og series) is 4, evidently, and from the modern series probably 10. david tennant is just a favourite for me and he never disappoints. i also loved the seasons he did, he truly had some of the best companions. i didn't ask last time but which doctor who book were you reading?
if I do end up going as 4, trust me, tumblr will see the picture evidence.
I'm so glad you're feeling pretty good :D (and that the hangover wasn't so bad) i feel the same btw, its nice to just go off in rambles with you and waiting for your next ask always leaves me wondering what more territory we'll end up having in common (as it seems we're nearly identical.) have you been watching any shows recently? do you prefer tv shows to films or vice versa? I've been rewatching merlin personally. also, answer as vaguely as you'd like, but are we close in age? (I was born in 2003) also if you know them, what is your Hogwarts house and mbti? i know these seem odd questions but I love knowing these tiny personality indicators. however, getting to know your actual personality is much more fun.
i look forward to your next ask!
much love, ethan.
