Do any of your characters have voice claims? Or just in general how do you imagine each of the fish fam sounding? :o

Actually very very few of my characters have voice claims bc they always sound a specific way in my head x) I used to have I think like, two but then I forgor one, and the other character who had a voice claim (critikal) got his gender trans'd so

The only one I could say has any kind of claim is Talas. I imagine his voice is very deep, but very soft. The kind thats pleasant to listen to but will rattle your ribcage if you are really close Most of the time i imagine it sounding like the singer from this song, particularly during the last chorus/bridge where the music cuts out and leaves only the guitar (also im so biased this is one of my fave songs lksfkh)

Hades also has a deep voice, though not quite as much. Run a little ragged from screaming often but not to the point of being raspy. It just sounds vaguely threatening in general. In a "why's he so mad" way (though it's not always the case, he just sounds like that). Not a great combo with the nuclear grade RBF he has on top of that

Graves... probably has my voice. I can't describe it to you, I don't know how I would, but I write them (or at least imagine them) with my own vocal mannerisms a lot x) Slightly monotone save for when they are talking about something they like in which case the dial that says 'expression' is set to wumbo

Connon sounds completely unhinged. Like an anime voice actor even. Though it does not sound natural, it has a very slight off sounding reverb/tinge to it since its not really coming from like, her (lack of) face. Its a voice that forms around the general area of her head. (Would probably sound ghostly, I think)

The BrightWin ‘fans’ on Twitter and Instagram are terrifying. So far, it seems like Tumblr has been pretty positive (unless I just follow, you know, nice people) but some of the fans on other sites are scary.

I don’t even know why I’m so worked up over this - I’m not even a Bright fan, the only role of his I have ever enjoyed is in Midnight Museum, but I get so damn angry at actors and singers in Asia having to put out statements to APOLOGISE for simply dating and having a personal life. I constantly see Kpop stars and K actors have to put out apologies for being in relationships and I DO NOT GET IT.

We all wish our fave onscreen couples were real, but they are ACTORS. Should we also boycott any actor that plays a vegan but eats meat in their real life? (Sorry that was the first comparison I could think of 🤣)

But seriously. I saw one girl get emotional on Twitter because Bright said Nene was his closest friend or something like that, and this chick is losing her mind because he once said Win was his closest confidante.

The fact my brother, who doesn’t watch BLs or Asian dramas, saw it on Twitter and literally text me to ask who was Bright and why was he apologising for being straight. I mean. That text literally summed up my thoughts. Why the hell should he have to apologise for anything? The poor guy didn’t owe anyone anything - if he’d wanted to keep it a secret, he would have been within his right.

Is it my age group? Is it just that us older millennials grew up in an era where all magazines did was gossip about dating rumours that we just evolved to not care about other people’s personal private lives?

Also, something I don’t get is Bright and Win haven’t been an on screen couple since 2020, and let’s be honest, they aren’t called the ‘straightest couple’ for no reason; they have absolutely no romantic chemistry at all (imo), I’m sorry. Both are great actors, and I think they do well playing friends, but, again, there is a reason everyone kinda goes 😑 when it comes to watching 2gether - it’s more a right of passage for new bl fans than it is something seeked out.

However, these fans have went absolutely rabid and it’s breached containment if its showing up on my weird wee brother’s Twitter. Also, even Mek got attacked for his tweet (he was kinda poking fun at the reaction, but he’s said people jumped to conclusions, and knowing how weird and vague he can be, who knows). I just do not understand this reaction. Like, from a psychological stance. Even if BrightWin were real, how would that actually impact your life other than your fetishing imagination? Can’t you still do that even if one of them (or both) are dating someone else? Isn’t that what fanfiction is for?

Okay, I need to stop obsessing over this. Maybe it’s my age, maybe it’s my brain psychology, or maybe I am just a normal person, but this reaction has really just wound me up.

Because I never engage with any Jared hater and just block them without wasting one breath, here's somethings I had in my mind that I would say to them:

1. It is hilarious how AAs want Jensen to have a solo panel BUT in the SPN con although according to them SPN did him dirty and are both hating J2 panels and also the talks of Walker cons. Because Jensen doesn't have a project that powerful to have their own con.

2. AAs think Jensen is SOOOOO forgiving to Jared but not because Jensen loves Jared but to protect J2 brand but Jared does whatever he wants. So they are actually admitting Jensen needs the J2 brand to survive more than Jared does. Jared is enough on his own 😂

3. AAs were so mad about Keegan being in the con when they were so happy about Jensen moving out of Austin. Why? Aren't you happy to see Jared having a new friend so he won't bother your fave? The real reason is they desperately wanted and were saying Jensen had so much fun and better friends in the boys set but in reality, he didn't make a single friend there. He posed for some golf pics and probably admired Karl's wisdom as am actor. He literally took a minute to remember who Jesse Usher was and what he did with them cause oops he was drunk? 👀 And he literally admitted his favorite set after SPN is the incompetent low budget set with an a-hole as the lead where the crew were being treated like shit and safety was a concern that people had to walk out...So you can imagine where the boys set falls for him.

4. Jensen knows it, AAs know it, Jensen is not someone who makes friends with his colleagues. Go back to his past jobs and current jobs, how many actors he is actually friends with? Like Jared is with Chad and Milo. That's why y'all are mad, cause even if Jared moves on you know Jensen will not let go of Jared. I mean Jared is not the one who moved across the country being obsessed with Jensen.

Those are all true, the AAs’ self-contradictory tantrums are always fun to watch, as much as their re-written histories (x)(x)(x).   The AAs have always despised Jared’s friends (and his wife) because they’re afraid it will lessen Jensen’s value in the J2/SPN brand.  Jared will do what he can to protect the J2 brand and the SPN/Sam Winchester legacy, but you’re also right that it’s Jensen who needs the J2 brand and SPN more than Jared does and the AAs know that.

When a person makes it big, there’s pressure to keep the friends that knew you before you made it big.  But if those same friends aren’t making it on their own and need your help, that’s only going to hold you back if your goal is to keep making more money.  People who get rich and keep getting richer because they make friends with (rich) people that they aspire to be.  Steve Carlson has some leeway because Jensen probably aspires to be a songwriter and singer on the “caliber” Steve is.  Taylor Swift is as successful as she is because she’s always collaborating with several different artists whom she admires or aspires to.  Jensen, surely there are other singers besides Steve whom you can collaborate with?

Pt2 😅 people have been shipping literal incest in shows. like spn. It's even named wincest. and the show went on to basically confirm they were soulmates btw. I've never seen anyone harassing them as much as it happens in tua fandom. These are shows about gray people with different circumstances. And not everything in a show is supposed to be right anyway,The age limit is there for a reason. It's not like all the other relationships they had aren't fcked up too. 🙄

I think it’s because Spn is fairly old and back in the day fans weren’t as entitled. Like, there was a clear line between fan and creator and also the Fandom rules that I grew up with like ‘Don’t like/Don’t read’ so even if there were people who weren’t into incest, they simply blocked tags or stuck to their own platonic fics and fanarts or whatever. 

And the people who proclaimed incest shippers ‘icky’ or tried to start fights were few and far between and not the overwhelming majority. 

But now there’s a lot of - younger - people in Fandom who expect everything to cater to them. 

I personally blame purity culture and radfem ideology seeping into everything but now you have stuff like people thinking Fandom is for teens only (which is such a shitty take obviously but tbh, if there were only teens within Fandom, most of your fave fics and fanarts wouldn’t exist because writing is a skill you have to practise and a 16 year old simply isn’t as far advanced as a 30 year old and also probably doesn’t delve into more mature topics - without trying to bash younger people, but just imagine only teens are allowed to write fanfic and then add the fact that now it’s trendy to shun people for writing about stuff that doesn’t 100% reflect their life experience and you would have hundreds upon hundreds of fics that are simply high school AUs). 

And now there’s also the fact that creators are easier to reach which some people seem to translate to ‘I can have a say in what happens on the show’ and that’s why the backlash is so big now because instead of thinking ‘The incest part is icky but what can I do except ignore it?’ you know have people going ‘This is bad and if I harass the creators long enough, they will do what I want instead!’

(And like, maybe this is just me but this obsession with not only the show but also the cast of a show you like is so...exhausting. Like, most of the time people who like the show seem to glorify the cast and then inevitably turn on them when something ‘problematic’ happens instead of....simply following the show and that’s also why most people seem to have such a problem with separating actors from their characters which is sad honestly. By all means, follow actors on insta - I do too! - but don’t stalk their every move and start fights online over them. They don’t care for you. They don’t know you. They have PR Teams who deal with drama they don’t need you defending them). 

Same with people who stan singers, they genuinely scare me. 

But since harassing the actors and producers doesn’t work most of the time, how about we send threats to fellow shippers who don’t ship the ‘good’ ship or like the ‘good’ characters because that’s even easier! 

What baffles me the most is how antis tend to create an entirely new show that has nothing to do with the original most of the time that exists solely to back up their own ideology. Which is how you end up with takes such as ‘Luther harrasses Allison all season while she desperately tries to get away, poor thing’ which is just so obviously false that I sometimes go ‘D-did we....watch the same show?’

I think at some point, maybe you should just stop watching the show if everything that happens in it is something you hate or don’t want to see, instead of trying to bend canon until it breaks and then pretending it’s always been like that. 

I mean, that’s what AUs are for. Make believe! 

(And yeah, I am always like ‘???’ when minors are in Fandoms where the source material is obviously for adults? Like, the IT Fandom for example. I mean, y’all can do whatever and I used to watch and read stuff for adults when I was a teen, that’s probably just part of growing up and exploring new things but I can’t believe how normal it seems for these minors to walk into adult spaces and then demand that the adults a. Leave or b. Only produce kid friendly things.

Looking at the trailer for the upcoming Netflix Cuphead show, I am just a little dissapointed. I mean it's a short teaser trailer, I dunno what I expected. I was so excited I was hoping the show was out already but aight. Aight. My mistake, am still very excited though.

The animation reminds me of the new Mickey mouse cartoons, which aight, will take me some time to get used to, since it combines the rubberhosey style but also makes it fast. But hey, it's good. I like that the animators are bringing the old timey charm and modern cartoons action pacing together. But, may I say:

King Dice looks amazing, though his voice sounds??? Off??? To me???

It might just be the fact it's been a long, LONG TIME since I've been in Cuphead waters and I didn't play the games (wistfully looks @ Switch prices and vows once more to get that game and the console), but the voice for him I have in my mind is that of Alana Bridgewaters, who sang the Die House song (and how I adore the performance, I am in love with this song still, relistening to it made me smile).

But like, from what lil' dive into the trivia I made (this is just me musing about this stuff, so I am not looking too deep. Don't take this small rant of mine as The Truest Truth Of All Truths aight?) here are some inspirations for the guy:

Now I knew about Calloway, because again, I loved the game since I was also in the BATIM fandom at the time, and the two games are both in the old timey style. Not to mention the jazz music covers and fan songs these two spawned.

Just, *chefs kiss* it was beautiful I tell you guys. My "old soul" heart sang with joy.

But anyways, thanks to that combined hyperfixation I did learn just a bit more about old timey animation (and the studios that competed at the time, and the practices/working conditions, and the lawsuits, and the -... well, you get the picture. It was a hyperfixation of almost three years or so.) which also made me realize that yea, I can see the influence of the singer.

And the song that was sung by Bridgewaters is how I imagined his voice to be (aight, also some of the amazing VAs that used to dub the fancomics, have to pay my respects to them, because they did a wonderful, amazing work. The voice claims for him were all over the place, but her version od Die House was and is my fave) so hearing the speaking voice in the show is... Off. Strange.

I consider myself someone who can and WILL find a way to make even a slight detail in a piece of media make sense or find an explanation, so a thing that doesn't fit with what I thought about a show/character/etc., etc. ends up working, so here it is:

The voice a person talks in can be completely different than the way they sing (and honestly in jazz? In the way these people sing where it can be like listening to silk and smoke, a voice that puts your mind in a relaxed haze, but can also be a wild whirlwind depending on the singer performing?? Like... Yea, there is def a difference, gotta keep that voice in shape and that throat well tuned)

The voice actor for the character Alameda Slim in Disney's Home on the Range (2004) could not yodel, so the studio contacted a singer who was in the scene, was well known and could yodel so well, that my lil slovene self wanted to learn how to yodel, and probably drew my parents NUTS with my attempts. So there IS a big chance in my opinion, of our Mr. getting a different VA for singing (oh let the man sing, please good goth give us the sleazy bastard singing, I will throw all of my non existent cash at his feet, go into proper debt and sign my soul to his boss if that happens. Yes, it appears I am an unshamed simp for villain men who have purple in their colorscheme. With each year I mind it less)

Not only that, but I am uncertain if the song was a spurr of the moment decision/fun easter egg made by the creative team, or if they wanted to include it, but lacked the budget/time/ideas who to contact (the game was supposed to be released earlier, but took longer to complete which... Have you SEEN the game? Like, I bet the wait was worth it, the animation is HAND FUCKING DRAWN!!!). Whatever the reason was, Madam Bridgewaters has my heart, and my wish to one day be able to get my voice to that kind of tones because damn. Damn my heart. Hearing that voice after years had me melt. Hats off madam. Miss? Madam? Ma'am.

Netflix gave them a good budget. They are using their budget. That's it. They have a vision of how the show will look, however I do hope we get an actual trailer soon. I want to see more of this amazing thing they are making (but patience is a virtue, so just *vibrates with restrained excitement*)

So to wrap up this Netflix Cuphead rant of mine:

Mr. King Dice still has my heart, even if I am a bit iffy about the voice. Also, shout out to the people in charge of getting the sneak peak out, they KNOW who the fans simp for.

The animation is more crisp than I'd imagine and faster than what the game style animation was. Again, will get used to it, but it will take some time. Kudos to the animators because well damn, even the other cartoons have great designs and I love the phone dude. I hope he rolls high. (also good fucking point from some other people, if the full show was done in the style the game was done, it would take years for one/few episodes to be finished)

I will keep an eye out for when the show drops, and might screech about it in the future. I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THOSE TWO CUPS BE THEIR MOST AMAZING RASCAL SELVES!!!

There were several kdramas that I discontinued because I was bored and just sorta disliked it (like it’s not my type). Most of these are action-genred dramas and the ones that are political and pretty heavy (like I didn’t finish vagabond and k2 although they are actually really good ones, I just don’t really like the genres that’s all), but out of all of these I’d probably hv to choose Abyss (stopped watching it after only 2 episodes) or Cheese In The Trap (THE ENDING OMGG I WANNA CRY 😭😭 CITT IS LITERALLY MY FAV WEBTOON AND THE DRAMA’S ENDING RUINED THE WHOLE THING)

Well I’ve known kdramas ever since I was little (I used to join my cousins sometimes while they were watching them) but as a summary, I liked dramas because of webtoon (like drama genre yk) and at that time my cousins and one of my aunt who were at my house at the time were binge-watching CLOY so I sorta joined and watched like half of it, and when it was done there were other kdrama reccs there (we were watching it on netflix) and one of them was WWWSK and I was sorta interested and curious so I decided to watch it with my aunt. Ever since then I’ve been obsessed with kdramas that I binge-watch them everyday lol

Well if you’re talking about drama that I watched this year, it’ll be too many as I’ve only just started watching kdramas literally March this year, so I’ll only perceive this as my favorite drama that was released in 2020, which is Backstreet Rookie although a lot of ppl actually hated it. Personally I disagree with those points too (adult webtoon, prostitution, underaged kissing, etc) but I really like how it’s such a funny comical drama, like those types of dramas are my favorite

Overall thoughts:

We finally got a little more context on Bamba and his master! Judging by our fave guy’s inner monologue at the end of the episode plus the flashback cuts... Bamba got wronged by his master who turned his back on his student and never looked back. I personally would’ve given a little more depth on the fears and nightmares of the heroes too like have them all be separated and have to confront their fears alone. I wanted like... deep fears(i should write headcannons...) But, it wasn’t too basic, so I’m not that picky.

It’s official, Wyzl is canonically dead. Damn, what a wonderful way for him to go out, I love that. There was good emotions on Kreon and Kou’s end (I wonder why Kou picked mercy and decided not to kill Kreon.), and I genuinely liked Wyzl as a villain. Wyzl was essentially the fun aspect part, and it makes you realize that Ryusoulger is intended for kids.

Overall thoughts:

It was when the team decided to walk together that I realized the show’s close to ending... It really has been a great ride to watch this series. And I’ve loved these guys a lot. ALSO THAT moment when Oto gets scared and hugs Melt... my heart... my precious lil bab... loved that for her actress, superb mwah! I really can’t wait to see the final stretches play out!

1. Describe your f/o’s voice. Is it deep and rough, or smooth and sweet? Does it happen to have an accent or a lisp?

Oh... Shoot's voice... 💓 How do I describe it properly? I could never tell you with enough words, or the right words rather, to say how much I love Shoot's voice. Shoot's voice is low and deep, not as rough and gravely as Knuckle's. Very husky and low, and rather quiet. A lot of the time it's hard to hear Shoot because he speaks so lowly and quietly. His voice is so lovely. Absolutely lovely. Just hearing his voice makes me melt into a puddle. I can't handle it. It honestly...makes me extremely weak.

Regardless of watching hxh in Japanese or English, his voices in both are perfect for him. Yuuji Ueda is one of my most favorite Japanese voice actors and singers, I adore him. I gush about him so much, I can never get over how he did Shoot's voice originally. And D.C. Douglas!! Ahh, I love him!! He does a very nice voice for Shoot in dub and even watching his interview talking about Shoot...oh my gosh, he seemed so genuinely happy about voicing him and enjoys him as a character. ❤ They both have lovely voices that are deep and kind for my sweet Shoot. Like, spot on.

3. Is your f/o a cuddler, and do they get more cuddlier in private?

Shoot shows more affection in private, especially when it is PDA. He is a lot more comfortable cuddling in private. But in public, just an arm around my waist to hold me to him, or just holding hands. He's too shy about kissing or cuddling out in the public, but the same goes for me.

13. What would you cook them when you’re trying to surprise them? What gifts would you get them?

Oh gosh, I would cook him some of our favorite foods as a surprise! I recently saw a recipe for these grilled chicken skewers that looked delicious. (Let me find it again so I remember the name... Yakitori!) I would love to try making different meals that are my absolute faves that Shoot would most likely enjoy himself, or foods I've wanted to try cooking for the first time. And bake some sweets! Could you imagine baking some cookies for this man? Lovely.

As for gifts... I would try to get him some nice things every once in a while. Maybe some nice tops he could wear? Maybe some new books if he ever wanted new ones to read? The silliest thing that came to mind is earrings. He doesn't wear any other type of jewelry other than those. That would be cute. Just things that if they caught my eye and figured Shoot would really like them, I would get them.

Oh!! I could see myself letting him wear my hair scrunchies!! 💞 I absolutely would!!!

JINYOUNG’S MEMORY LANE 🍑🧡

The fourth post of the series ‘Memory Lane: Got7’ is dedicated to The Nation’s First Love, one of the best actors in the world (you can totally see how un-biased I am, right? 😂) and mother of Got7: Jinyoung!

Park Jinyoung (박 진영) was born in South Korea the 22nd of September, 1994. Known by the ahgase fandom as Jireongie, Pepi or Park Gae (Wang Gae Park Gae forever!), Park Jinyoung has been gracing us with his singing, dancing and acting skills since 2012.

Born in a loving family, Jinyoung spent his childhood surrounded by the unconditional love of his parents and two older sisters. Even though we don’t have a lot of information about his childhood or pre-debut life, it is known that when he was young, he mostly played with dolls instead of other toys that are more “suited” for boys (this is thanks to his sisters 😊).

Also, we know that he graduated from Kyunggi High School, where he was the president of his class (we love a responsible boy). In a TV program, he said that he still stays in contact with his homeroom teacher, because she is the one who guided him to become who he is today (thank you very much Jinyoung’s homeroom teacher, ahgases own you a lot! 😭).

But he wasn’t just a responsible boy, he was also a really good person. Some time ago, a boy that went to the same high school as our Prince revealed that even though he was bullied and an outcast, Jinyoung would get his friends to sit and eat with him so he wouldn’t feel alone and left out. This boy said that he felt really thankful for what Jinyoung did, and that he was a really good hyung (it seems clear that our boy has had a heart of gold since he was young, no wonder why people love him so so so much 💛).

Jinyoung once commented that since he was a child he wanted to be a singer but never did anything to achieve his goal, until one day his dad told him that he would not be anything in life. That hurt him so much that from then on he decided to prove his father wrong and show him that he could become whatever he wanted (his dad was a bit harsh, but his words surely served as motivation for our boy, so... thanks?).

So, our Jinyoung started to practice dancing and singing, and signed up for JYP’s Open Auditions in 2009 where he tied with JB for first place, officially making him a JYP Entertainment trainee. There, he trained for 2 years and 6 months before debuting.

However, while he was preparing for his idol debut, he appeared in a few dramas along with JB. He first made his acting debut in KBS2’s “Dream High 2”, and then appeared in the drama “When a Man Loves”.

Finally, on the 20th May 2012, he made his debut as a member of the duo JJ Project (along with 🌴) with the song ‘Bounce’ (I can hear Yugy, JJ Project’s fan-club president, singing his heart out to this song, it was the bop of the century!).

What I didn’t mention before was that Jinyoung and JB have been friends since before being JYP trainees, making this one of the reasons why they decided to audition together for JYP Entertainment (my JJ Project feelings, they’re so cute! 😭). At the auditions, they attracted the attention of the public through their exceptional talent, and that’s why they debuted together.

Even though his stage name tight now is Jinyoung (thanks to his parents), I have to highlight that the reason why Jinyoung originally debuted under the stage name “Jr.” was because he shares his real name with JYP Entertainment’s founder, and therefore J.Y. Park himself wanted him to be a younger version of himself (I kinda prefer our boy to have his real name tbh 🤷🏻‍♀️).

Jinyoung not only debuted as part of JJ Project back in 2012. On the 16th of January 2014, Pepi debuted along the rest of the members of Got7 with the song ‘Girls Girls Girls’ (I have to say that style wise, he didn’t look that bad, but the colored green eyeshadow was a bit to much for me 😂).

This was the continuation of his dream alongside JB (his longtime friend) and 5 new brothers who would become his “sons” over time, because he is known as the one who takes good care of them. Therefore, he is the mom of the group (our “mommy” Jinyoung has a rough life taking care of the kids).

It’s been 7 years since his debut, and our Jinyoung is known as a super hard worker, not only for dancing and singing, but for acting. He starred in the web-series “Dream Knight” along with his fellow Got7 members in 2015 (confession time: I find the drama cringy to watch, but I love it so much I’m sure it’s become unhealthy). He acted in “My Love Eun-Dong” in 2015, where he got a huge amount of praise from the public, other drama directors and actors. He acted in “The Legend of the Blue Sea” in 2016, where -once again- he received tons of praises and offers form different directors. He acted in the JYP drama called “Magic School” in 2017 together with 2PMs Nichkhun and Park Yoon. And also, he acted in the movie “Snowflakes” (also known as “A Stray Goat”) in 2017, where he made his debut as a movie actor.

Currently he is filming his new drama called “He Is Psychometric” (2019) along with Shin Ye Eun (a really talented JYP actress, and gorgeous too 😊). This is the first time our Jinyoung has a leading role in a drama, and I seriously can’t wait for it to aired and be swept out of my socks and see my wig flying to South Korea.

But he has not only shown his talent in acting. He has become an amazing composer for the group, creating songs full of meaning and feelings like ‘Face’, ‘My Youth’ or ‘Thank You’ (you know, the ones that make you think and cry all at the same time, aka my fave songs 🤣). Jinyoung has said that he finds inspiration in ahgases’ love and his own life experiences, and I can only aspire to be half as talented as he is one day (probably that won’t happen, but at least I have him to be by my side🥰).

Going back to JJ Project for a little bit now. After 5 years since their debut, these boys made a comeback in July 2017 with the song ‘Tomorrow, Today’ from the album ‘Verse 2’. You can definitely see how our Jinyoung has changed over the years, and how much he has matured. The songs he composed for the album are full of feelings and are relatable to everyone. He said that ‘Verse 2’ was meant to be an album that could help people going through a hard time to not feel alone, as they could easily relate to the lyrics of the songs (my honest un-biased opinion: THE ALBUM DESERVED A FUCKING GRAMMY!)

In this 7 years he has achieved many things. He first debuted with his longtime friend JB (🌴) in JJ Project, then debuted again in Got7 and became the mom of the group (and somehow married JB, as he is the dad of our babies), acted in many dramas and finally starred in one, opened his Instagram after Got7’s first win, composed and wrote many songs for the group’s albums, went on a World Tour (he blew me a kiss in the Paris Concert, your girl almost dies right then and there!),etc.

It’s clear that he is a really talented person, and I’m so happy he debuted again with Got7. He truly is an essential part of the group (just like the rest of the members) and I can’t imagine a better mommy for the group.

Also, I have to apologize to all of you for being missing for such a long time, and not post as I planned to (this series would have been finished by now if I had sticked to my plan). I’m a college student, and for the past month or so I had to study for my finals (good news, I have passed all of them: YAY ME! 😊). But I’m back now, so I’ll keep posting for this series.

Another thing I wanted to add was that, if you are curious about my experience at the concert, I can make a separate post on it, and show my pictures and videos (I have a clip of Jackson dancing ‘Paradise’ in front of me that is pure gold), and also talk about how it was.

Meet Your Makers: Indie Night’s Alex Brown and Saima Ahmed

Meet the legends that make Indie Night happen EVERY WEEK, Alex Brown and Saima Ahmed. 

You know Alex as an improviser, sketch comedian and all around funny person (Lil Strawberry Bitch, Fancy at The Haunt, Camp Wanapoke, etc, etc, etc). You know Saima as the girl behind the camera, taking sick pics of your favourite performers and making you jealous on Instagram. You know both of them as Montreal Improv’s best dressed duo. You can go see them host Indie Night every Saturday night at 9:30 PM, in Theatre B.

  1.    Would you like to be famous? In what way?

AB: Yes, I would like to be a famous podcaster and/or filmmaker/performer. I pretty much have the same career ambitions now as I did when I was 6 years old. Except for the podcasting part, if you asked me what podcasting was when I was 6 I would have probably explained it as some kind of net you cast to catch...pods? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

SA: Tbh, I don’t think so! It seems so competitive! I’m more a “behind the scenes” but very much in control gal. I prefer to be recognized and appreciated for my work and connect with people that way. In other words, I still want to dress up and go to the Oscars but as a producer rather than an actor.

2.   If you were able to live to the age of 90 and retain either the mind or body of a 30-year-old for the last 60 years of your life, which would you want?

AB: Mind for sure. I plan on having a tight bod when I’m 90 and I need my mind to keep up.

SA: Hm tough call. I’m going to agree with Al, an active mind means an active body!

3.   Given the choice of anyone in the world, whom would you want as a dinner guest?

AB: My dearly departed yellow lab Winnie and we would share a spaghetti dinner with a side of corn on the cob because those were her faves.

SA: Michelle Obama! To talk about how we can help empower women to run the world over some fish tacos.

4.   If you could wake up tomorrow having gained any one quality or ability, what would it be?

AB: The ability to know which ability or quality I would like to gain. So I guess decision making and resolve?

SA: The ability to help create peaceful resolutions between 2 parties. Imagine how useful that would be in 2018!

5.   Do you have a secret hunch about how you will die?

AB: I thought this said ‘secret lunch’ at first so I’m assuming it’s going to have something to do with my not being able to read instructions properly and things going horribly awry. Conversely if it turned out to be lunch related I wouldn’t be mad.

SA: Haha, I’m a speed reader and I read secret lunch too! Agree 100% with Al on this.

6.   When did you last sing to yourself? To someone else?

AB: I wish I had a better answer for this than ‘in an improv show’, but I will have to admit that I serenaded a group of paying audience members this past Friday night with a rousing rendition of ‘I Wanna Be the First Female CEO’ at Friday Night’s Main Event - Fridays at 8:30pm at Montreal Improv ;)

SA: I have been singing “The Kids Are Alright” by Chloe x Halle to myself for a few weeks now. I’m a horrible singer so I avoid singing in public at all cost.

9. Share a personal problem and ask your partner’s advice on how she might handle it.

AB: What can I do to stay focused and/or motivated at my day job?

SA: Before you start, make a list of things you need to do. I find it surprisingly satisfying (even motivating) to cross things off my list. Also take breaks, I find it helps me focus if I know that afterwards I can chill.

AB: I am MC’ing a friend’s backyard wedding this summer, what should I wear?

SA: For the MC, I would say lean towards a bit more of a classic silhouette and add some Alex Brown touches via accessories to keep it hip. I’m a fan of a unique dress or a chic jumpsuit.

SA: I know for a fact that you are a morning person. I have trouble waking up really early, any tips?

AB: Unfortunately there’s no real easy hack for this, I think you’re either a morning person or you’re not. That said I’m sure you could cultivate habits over time to get better at it. I drink a really big glass of water as soon as I wake up and then I go to the gym or try to do a little bit of exercise at home at least. Giving yourself some time for you is super important. My motto for 2018 and beyond is ‘self care, don’t care’!

SA: I’m going to be moving soon but before that, I want to get rid of shit I don’t need. What’s the best method to declutter?

AB: Honestly since I’m a basic binch I pray to the goddess of tidiness, Marie Kondo. Her book actually taught me so much about getting rid of stuff. I can confidently say that the only clothes I own now are ones that ‘spark joy’. You can borrow my copy! Jk I don’t have it anymore, I gave it away.

10. Describe your show, Indie Night.

Indie Night is a weekly improv show that showcases performers of various experience levels from all over the city! We have a bit of everything from solo improv, class fields trips, current and past house teams and some pretty cool out of town acts. We’ve even had some musical acts! Indie Night takes place every Saturday night at 9:30pm and the last Saturday of the month is *Ladies Night*, featuring all female/female-identifying performers.

10. What excites you the most about your show?

We love that we have this amazing platform and get to provide the opportunity to new acts to perform. We are often the origin story show for some troupes that go onto create some pretty funny things. For some players Indie Night is even the very first time they’ve ever performed in front of an audience, which is very exciting!

The show isn’t just for newbies, we have all sorts of acts featuring varying levels of players. The fun thing about Indie Night is that you can see more experienced players perform with newer players and you never know what you’re gonna get on any given Saturday!

11. In 5 words, why should people come to Indie Night?

It is a good time!

25th anniversary Phantom of the Opera Soundtrack - I have listened to this Too many times for it not to be on here. If u like incredible emotional singing and are pretty gay, highly recommend. (altho watch the performance first everything will make so much more sense and its beautiful and im gay)

Geidi Primes by Grimes - this album is very surreal, and dreamy, if you like feeling strange like your in a dream, this is the album for you.

Thank your Lucky Stars by Beach House. My favourite place to listen to this album is very edgy it’s walking through the graveyard to get to uni but the album feels very existential to me and makes me just take it slow and I like that very much.

Ripley Pine by Lady Lamb and the Beekeeper - imagine Sufjan Stevens but a gay lady whomst I love. Sold.

not really a specific ship, but what are your opinions on shipping real people?

I mean, the gross aspect aside of f.e. shipping Matt and Harry in a romantic way because YIKES! This is so wrong on so many levels like… can you not? 

But tbh, I really don’t care for the personal lives of celebs. Most often I end up being surprised when I find out that person A is dating/marrying/breaking up/pregnant from person B. If I like an actor or singer or whatever, I am here for their career, their films, their songs. Their personal lives are their own damn business and it honestly creeps me out when there are some people who are so invested that they end up stalking that celeb and f.e. their whole family on social media. YIKES! Like, imagine somebody would do this to you. How cool would you be? Exactly. I also find it quite … how do you say strange af when I hear people say they ship real people. Like, I am sorry but this is creepy in my eyes. Those are real people and not some fictional characters from your fave tv show that you are invested in and hope that they end up together. Those are people with real lives that are not for your entertainment. You can find them cute, really, but there is a thin line between saying they make a great couple and just go on like actually ship them and be so invested in their lives. Because lbr there is a reason why some people “ship” certain couples and we all know why that is. So…. there is a reason why I stay away from this and not just because I honestly couldn’t care less.

MW : What’s new?

BQ : Currently, work is sparse as most of my businesses have been shut down because of the COVID-19 pandemic. No films or television shows are being shot in NYC at this moment in time and most of my side businesses are on pause as well. This season’s gardening work didn’t happen at all (because NYC had not yet deemed gardening an essential service).

Thankfully, I have a few coaching (acting) clients I work with often and I had one job before this pandemic hit that I’m still working on - a press and radio campaign for Irish singer-songwriter Ultan Conlon’s beautiful new record, ‘There’s a Waltz’. It’s been gratifying to see reviewers agreeing with me that it’s Ultan’s finest record thus far!

MW : Tell me about your role in Law & Order...

BQ : Well, I had four Law & Order roles, actually. Two are on Law & Order: SVU and two are on the mothership Law & Order.

My first big role on SVU was of a victim, Jean Weston, on the season finale of their 2nd season, many moons ago. This character was a mother and wife from Oregon whose husband and son got stabbed to death by a serial killer – played by Richard Thompson.

I’ll never forget this role for many reasons but primarily it was a job where I discovered I could cry on cue. The director and producers decided they wanted to end the episode with a huge close up of my character, breaking down in the gallery in the courtroom. One of the producers shouted out, “Bernadette…can you cry on cue!?” I meekly replied, “Sure.” Next thing I hear was…”rolling….” and “ACTION”… I looked up, terrified I wouldn’t be able to summon up tears but imagined the hell my character went through and looked deeply into Chris Meloni’s eyes and …phew!...started to cry!

The Law & Order franchise has been a godsend for many actors. Not just financially, which it has and still is but for me, the experience I gained working on those shows led to a lot more television and film work over the years, so I’m forever grateful to creator/producer, Dick Wolf.

MW : What are your own views on law & order? Anything you’d like to see relaxed or tightened up on?

BQ : Feels very naïve and idealistic to say this, but I’d love to see major, police reform. Police brutality is despicable and out of control, especially in Black communities. 

I believe we’re beginning to see the power of the Black Lives Matter movement resulting in some of these police officers losing their jobs and sometimes being arrested themselves for their unspeakable acts of violence, but I imagine we, as a nation, need to keep the pressure on. The police brutality simply has to stop. There has to be more consequences for those senseless deaths. There has to be better training, etc...

I’d also love to see major gun control in this country. I would love to see guns banned. Period. But that’s highly unrealistic as this country tragically has a major addiction to their gun culture. Perhaps someday we’ll have some common-sense gun control again such as background checks, and high-capacity magazine and semi-automatic assault weapon bans.

MW : What was it like working with Kenneth Branagh?

BQ : I suggested Kenneth’s play “Public Enemy” to the Irish Arts Center’s Artistic Director at the time, Nye Heron, and was emailing and talking with Kenneth’s assistant quite a lot before setting up a meeting with Kenneth and Nye.

I was flying high that I helped to secure the rights to his play. Kenneth then came to our first read-through, and he came back to see a preview or two. He was an absolute prince, kind, intelligent, caring, witty.

However, this success was so bittersweet because my dad died right before we opened the play, a performance I had dedicated to him before he died (because my dad loved Jimmy Cagney, and the main character of the play was obsessed with Cagney). The play got great reviews and we ran for five months. It was so difficult for me to fully appreciate the success of this show as I was mourning the most devastating loss of my life.

MW : Which "shelved" film appearance of yours should have seen the light of day?

BQ : There’s a provocative film I am in about a racial experiment that is under the radar called, “The Suspect” (2014), which stars Mekhi Phifer, Sterling K. Brown and William Sadler.

By the way, I am currently in three indie films that I’m psyched for the world to see: I play a lead role in “Darcy” which is available (worldwide) to stream on Herflix.com; “The Garden Left Behind” has just landed international distribution, so stay tuned for the release date! And finally, I have an interesting supporting role in a film called “Tahara” which had its world premiere at Slamdance in January and is slated for more film festivals.

MW : What makes a good film/TV critic? Can you name any?

BQ : One that doesn’t give the plot, or too much dialogue away. I often don’t read reviews of films, or television shows, I want to watch because I love going in – not being influenced by another’s opinion. But sometimes, I’ll read reviews afterwards to learn more about the evolution of a film or TV show. I often find myself agreeing with A.O.Scott’s (NY Times) film reviews.

MW : How do you usually prepare for an acting role, and has a character ever taken you over?

BQ : The first thing I do is read the script several times and see what the words are telling me about the character, and how other characters view that person. If it’s a period piece, I research the era or history surrounding the event in the play, or screenplay. Eventually, I forget my research, learn my words and hopefully let the character inhabit me emotionally, physically and psychologically, spiritually etc…and try my best to be fully present with the other actors I’m working with moment-to-moment. Every project is different.

Yes, there were times, I found it difficult to shut off the pain of a character after some performances. Two that come to mind are two intensely emotional theatre roles I performed at the Repertory of St. Louis, Elizabeth Proctor in “The Crucible”, and Agnes in “Bug”.

MW : Is performing on film different to TV as an acting discipline?

BQ : I think it all depends on the style of the film, or television show. With a TV show like Law & Order, it’s formulaic and heightened realism (acting style) and so one makes sure one knows every single word, and hits one’s marks, and if it calls for emoting then one must emote! Some films I’ve done are grittier-kitchen-sink realism. A very minimalistic style of acting.

MW : Has your song-writer husband ever penned a song for you?

BQ : Yes, many….Don (Rosler) primarily writes for and with other artists – on the John Margolis: Christine’s Refrigerator CD, there’s many tunes that speak to many moments within the course of our lives: the title track (altho’ the name was changed), “Scrap of Hope” (a pep talk to me when I was stuck at a temp job I hated), “Here’s Something You Don’t See Every Day” (a wedding reverie that literally started in Don’s mind when I fell asleep on his shoulder), and he wrote an exquisite lyric for Bobby McFerrin’s Grammy-nominated record VOCAbuLarieS, a song called “Brief Eternity”… where his words infuse my love for gardening: “Working in the garden has you... ...Breathing in the bloom and then you View the sunset view to move you Close to truly understanding Life and death but nothing ending Voices living on”…..

MW : Tell me about some of your favourite music...

BQ : My music tastes are pretty eclectic – besides all the indie artists I’ve done publicity for, I love so many styles of music from classical to folk to country but here’s some of my fave artists: Tom Waits, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, Pink, Beyonce, Billie Holiday, Ani DiFranco, Ibeyi, Sinead O’Connor, Prince, Bjork, Leonard Cohen, Kacey Musgraves, K.D. Lang, Laura Mvula, Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, Billy Bragg, and Randy Newman, among many others.

MW : You enjoy gardening. How is yours designed and tended to?

BQ : I don’t have my very own garden. I live in NYC and dream of having a country house with a garden of my own one day!

This is the reason I started a side business of urban gardening. My dad was an extraordinary gardener and after he died, I started tending to my mother’s flower gardens. Then I found myself volunteering at a neighborhood garden and that led to me working in other people’s gardens. Primarily small back gardens and some rooftop or balcony gardens.

I specialize in flowers, shrubs and trees and love planting lots of perennials (flowers and plants) with annuals so there’s lots of varying blossoms of different heights and textures, throughout spring, summer and fall. 

When possible, if space allows, I also love incorporating foot paths, rock walls, or other elements in gardens – art/birdbaths/benches/statues that might be a sweet focal point but primarily I love the combinations of plants, trees, shrubs and flowers to be the focal points.

MW : Recommend five flowers...that every good garden should have!

BQ : Daffodils - one of the first signs of spring! Muscari (aka grape hyacinths) – the color (blue) is gorgeous, as is the scent. Climbing roses – the beauty and romantic history of roses. Anemone Robustissima (late blooming perennial flower). Lady Ferns (okay not a flower, but I’m a fern freak and I love ferns of all kinds!, but Lady ferns in particular are stunning when they sit beside most flowers or surround trees).

MW : How opinionated are you on current events? Would you like to be more, or less opinionated?

BQ : I’m extremely opinionated on current events but find it difficult to find ways to communicate my thoughts without screaming angrily from the rooftops and then of course not being heard. There are those that say we have an obligation to try to talk sense into people whose viewpoints are much more extreme than one’s own (either extreme conservative or extreme liberal). 

I’m very liberal but am more pragmatic when it comes to progress, not perfection, so I’m very happy to enthusiastically vote for someone like Joe Biden or in 2016, Hillary Clinton, but I honestly don’t know how to reach people whose minds are already made up – people who either continue to justify their support for the current racist/narcissist/sexist/pathological liar-in-chief, or that justify their “protest” vote by falsely equivocating both candidates as “the same” or “the lesser of two evils”.

So yeah, I offend people at times because yes, I’m judgmental when it comes to politics and I most definitely believe in the power of protests, but believe just as strongly in the collective power of one’s vote and it drives me insane when others don’t show up and vote for local elections, and national ones.

I find I do hold back on Facebook, not because I’m afraid to voice my opinions but because it becomes too much of a time suck for me.

MW : What character traits frustrate you?

BQ : Impatience (in myself). Aggression (in myself and others).

MW : What’s the kindest thing another person has done for you?

BQ : I find this question so complex to answer. There are so many inexplicable moments in my life, where I’ve been blown away by many seemingly small gestures or kind words from strangers. And professionally, I’ve been truly blessed to work with some top-notch directors that gave me the gift of encouraging me to fully trust my artistic instincts.

When I was a child, my parents were not the type of people who conveyed their love in typically demonstrative ways, in ways that I honestly craved, so on the rare occasions when either one of them did utter something like “We’re proud of you”, or “I love you”, I was very moved by them going past their own comfort zones to express that kind of sentiment!

I’ve had many personal and professional challenges in my life and many of my siblings have been there for me over the years in ways I can’t really articulate without choking up. I also think having the courage to face one’s disagreements and past hurt, which comes with the territory of most friendships and relationships, is an act of kindness that I most value. Those I feel closest to have stuck it through with me by navigating through some painful, complex and messy misunderstandings. I’ll never forget those acts of kindness and generosity.

MW : What have you lost, growing older... and gained?

BQ : My mom died in January, and as I mentioned, my dad died many years ago. Sometimes I feel the depths of that loss – the fact that I don’t have my parents to share the ups and downs of the events of the rest of my life. Of course, I do have them close to my heart and their spirits live on….but damn I miss them! I’ve definitely gained a profound appreciation for them and their influence on me in countless ways.

On a professional level, as an older actress, unfortunately it’s easy to become invisible but I’m not ready to disappear and am joining the fight against ageism! I’m drawn to stories and filmmakers that include women and men of all ages, genders and ethnicities.

Perhaps if enough roles are not forthcoming in the next number of years, I’ll venture into writing and directing at some point.
