Rattled by @gukslut i first read this series over the summer of 2021, and i think about it on a weekly, sometimes daily basis. i reread it every six months. it’s an absolute gem, impeccably written. one of my favorite jungkook’s i’ve ever read

My feet to follow, and my heart to hold by @daechwitatamic i read this series as it was being posted last year, and i used to wake up so excited on the morning of a new chapter. this namjoon unleashed something in me, and i’ve been left craving love more than i used to. i love the presence of poetry too.

Guarded by @xjoonchildx this series was the first mafia au story i read and fucking loved. i’ve gone back to it so many times. i love the way hoseok’s perception of oc changes as the story progresses. oh so good and satisfying.

Love cafe by @chocosvt this jeonghan piece!!!!! AHHHHHHHH! the whole piece is amazing, but there were some scenes that were especially sweet and endearing. i remember sending a friend screenshots of dialogue freaking out.

book recs:

i’ve read almost everything by taylor jenkins reid, and i’ll recommend her books forever.

last year i read the book of azrael by amber v nicole and loved it. it’s a dark fantasy romance. i haven’t read the sequel yet.

this year, so far, i’ve read days at the morisaki bookshop. it’s a quick read but very sweet and comforting, with life lessons just beneath the surface. i’ve also read heavenly bodies by imani erriu. it had me screaming and kicking my feet. i posted about it here a few days ago. i’m reading the sequel right now.

dub finding ceremony by alexis pauline gumbs is a book i read my senior year of college, and it inspired a lot of writing for my independent studies prose class. braiding sweetgrass by robin wall kimmerer is another beautiful read.

The world building? Impeccable. The characterization? Devastating. The writing style? Divine. 

More than any other fic I’ve seen, this story theorizes about how racism and anti-muggleborn prejudice can intersect, and it’s brilliant and real and painful, and, if I get one single other person to read this under-appreciated fic, I will consider that my contribution to this fandom.

Title: Second Alliance Author: Imani Joain Fic Rating: MA Link: dokuga or ao3 What do You Like About This Fic? I fell in love with this piece from the beginning. In fact, i was so invested that i (very very stupidly, please do not do this) stayed up for 3 days straight to read it in its entirety - TWICE. The plot was not only compelling and well developed throughout, the canon characters just as beautifully done, but the (many) original ones were spectacularly formed as well. They came across as real and investing as our usual characters; and along that vein, i felt inuyasha was one of, if not the best characterization for how he could/should have matured that i’ve ever read. All in all, to me, this fic has become a staple :)

Title: Unspoiled Author: forthright Fic Rating: T Link: here What do You Like About This Fic? This was one of my earlier fics in the fandom and i just adored it, still do. It might have been one that, as forthright said, takes the 'scenic route’ through the plot, but i thought that suited it perfectly. The characterizations in this one stuck out so well to me, and the world created, both past and present, was wonderfully done. This fic was definitely formative for me and has remained a special one to this day :3

Title: Chain of Love Author: Chie Fic Rating: MA Link: here What do You Like About This Fic? This was also one of my earlier fics - i even drew fanart for it way back when (gosh it’s been over a decade now..).  I loved their characterizations (unsurprisingly, ha), especially the slow burn of their interactions, which were sometimes very humorous. Honestly their slow burn was amazing, i truly loved the progression of how they went from enemies/reluctant allies to friends to lovers so nicely. This fic is yet another that i can’t help but look on with great fondness ^-^

Like I can’t re-read Tales from the House of the Moon because it feels like a huge commitment and will impact your emotions and leave you exhausted by the end (a great fic of course but still). Unspoiled more gently eases you into reading and kind of feels like reading someone elses nostalgic memories. Therefore I feel more attached to it.

Apart from some dark and explicit part which I’m not fan of, this is a really good and profound work and all parts of it are necessary for the plot. To cut it short (which is hard for me), I must say its fantastic! The inner turmoil of Sesshoumaru as a person is depicted in great detail and talent. This is what it takes to be a demonic nature transformed into mature loving full value person capable of trust, care and sacrifice. Through a lot of impediments, trials and gross mistakes the two of them finally become transformed as individuals and make right decisions. Bravo!

SessKag are so good and natural together which made me belive they are true canon and fantastic.

Fic Self-Rec Meme

@breadedsinner tagged me to pick five things I’ve written and explain why I like them. This is...hard for me tbh because I’m a horrible perfectionist who can’t live up to the impossible standards I have for my work and so tend to hate 95% of it. But I’ll give this a shot anyway. Most of these are going to have smut in them, because, well. It’s me.

1) Heart of the Phoenix (Warcraft III/WoW, Kael x Illidan x Vashj): I hate to start with a WIP but I would be remiss if I didn’t mention this behemoth of a fic that’s basically my life’s work at this point (sad as that sounds, lol). This is my infamous re-write of the first WoW expansion, Burning Crusade, told from the POV of Kael’thas Sunstrider, Illidan Stormrage, and Lady Vashj. The earliest chapters are admittedly cringey to me because it’s clear how much my writing has improved since I started. So I’d probably change a lot about those opening chapters in Northrend. But, on the whole, I’m proud of how it blew up into something much bigger than I intended, and I’m proud of what I’m doing with it: wrangling the kudzu plot of BC into something that actually makes sense and stays true to the characters, fleshing out one-note NPCs and loot piñatas into characters the reader actually cares for, all in a story that at its core is about love and redemption. If you at all enjoy the worldbuilding and canon-busting I’ve done with Dragon Age, HotP has it on an even bigger scale--I was doing that to Azeroth years before Thedas came along.

2) Pygmalion’s Hand (Mass Effect, Imani x Miranda): I’m really skittish about my femslash, for a lot of reasons, but this one I’m still really proud of. It all started from a gag too, like most things that seize my brain: how the hell did Imani wake up in the Lazarus facility with makeup on? It turned into the story of how Commander Shepard, humanity’s shining star and icon of heroism, became “Imani” to Miranda, a very human woman that she fell hopelessly in love with despite everything. Imani and Miranda’s romance was a slow burn sort of scenario that was built over the course of two games, and I like to think I captured the UST between them well here. 

3) First and Last and Always (Mass Effect, Imani x Garrus x Thane): Probably the ME fic I’m most “known” for, I guess, and one I still love. This was how Garrus and Thane ended up consummating all the UST they had, and was the thing that lead their V with Imani into becoming a triad. There’s a lot of uncertainty when this takes place: in-between Arrival and ME3, as Imani’s off to face the music on Earth for those DLC events, before Thane goes to Sur’Kesh for a treatment he’s not sure will work, etc. There’s a lot of heady emotional stuff going on and I think I balanced that well with the smut. I also know for a fact that this fic nearly singlehandedly built up the canoe for this polyship, and I’m still kinda smug about it tbh.

4) The Demands of Prescience (Frank Herbert’s Dune, Paul x Feyd-Rautha): As close to PWP as I ever get, this AU is based on one single change: what if, during their duel in the palace at Arrakeen, Paul spared Feyd-Rautha and held him prisoner rather than killing him? And what if he did so because it turned out to be the one thing that might prevent the cosmic jihad he unleashed? It’s not at all fluffy like my usual fic. There’s something raw and desperate about Feyd to me, and I tried to capture it here, as much as Paul’s sense of compassion.  I intentionally aped Frank’s style of prose, and I think I pulled it off relatively well.

5) Penumbra (Final Fantasy IV, Cecil x Kain): My most recent Final Fantasy fic, since diving back into that old fandom, and my favorite one. This takes place literally at the start of the game, right after the King of Baron dismisses Cecil from the Red Wings and sends him and Kain on what is, unbeknownst to them, a horrific mission to kill the summoners of the village Mist. A lot of people, at least in the American FF fandom, like to paint Cecil as a boring hero, but I love him precisely because his story is the kind of redemption story that makes me weak--he’s a shellshocked soldier that’s been forced to do things no one should do, torn between his loyalty to his country and the man who raised him and his own conscience. People who came later to the franchise like to point to Cloud and Squall as the stereotypical angsty Final Fantasy protagonist, but Cecil was the prototype for all the ones that followed, and is still one of the best examples IMO. I think I did him justice in this fic. At this point in his story, he’s wrestling with guilt, at having the rug pulled out from under him, and being afraid--but then, Kain is there for him. Their often volatile relationship is at its heart based in a profound sort of love imo, and I tried to get that across. And there’s a lot of foreshadowing for what happens during the course of the game. But I like to think I did it in a non-anvilicious way.

SKFA Themed Lists Overview

Sesskag Intro: Fan fiction that are quintessential in understanding why so many ship sesskag. They are the staple of the sesskag fandom and are often recommended upon entering the fandom. 

Time Travel: Sesskag fan fictions involving time-travelling beyond what Kagome is accustomed to. Usually, this involves Kagome accidentally time-travelling further into the past or in the future. 

After Jewel Completion: Works containing Kagome and her friends after the grand battle with Naraku, and/or after completing the Shikon jewel. This may involve Kagome making a wish that alters reality, Sesshomaru taking Kagome on a new adventure, or major characters dying that prompts a new plot. This may take place in modern-day Tokyo or the Feudal era. 

Inuyasha/Kikyo betrayal: These are sesskag fics that characterize either Inuyasha or Kikyo or both as a villain in the story, often betraying Kagome in some manner. They may contain character bashing towards Inuyasha or Kikyo. This trope is seen less now, but it used to be much used back in the day. 

Rin needs help: These are fics where Sesshoumaru uses Rin as a pretext for seeking out Kagome, whether this is because of Rin’s illness or because Sesshoumaru feels she would need a teacher or a mother-figure.

Alternate Universe Serial & Alternate Universe One Shots: These fan fictions are works that are not traditionally set in the Feudal Era Canon and are not compliant with or do not feature elements of the Inuyasha Canon. They may be set in the modern era or in a historical time other than the Sengoku Jidai. They may retain youkai and miko or make all the characters human. They may feature multiple different tropes like college, celebrities, etc

Modern AU rec list: A list of recs of alternate universe fics that take place in the modern day, as requested by a follower.

Feudal Era / Canon: These are fics that are compliant with the Inuyasha canon (at least to a point) and are set (at least in the most part) in the Feudal Era.

Searching for a mate: These fics feature Sesshomaru looking for a mate, possibly because of someone else’s insistence that he should mate (most typically his mother’s). May include matchmaking tropes but not necessarily.

Kagome saves the day: These fics involve Kagome saving Sesshomaru’s life, or saving other major characters or OCs. They may also feature Kagome being the grand savior of the Grand Battle or defeating Naraku on her own.

Sesshoumaru helps Kagome: Fan fiction that involve Sesshomaru assisting Kagome (and her friends) on completing the jewel or in other quests or situations.

Prophecy: The fics belonging in this category contain great prophecies or legends of Kagome’s and Sesshomaru’s relationship/partnership, or of a dark prophecy of a villain rising.

Dark/Tragedy: Fics that have a darker tone and/or plot, where really bad things happen and the endings might not always be happy.

Reunion: Fics that are canon compliant up to the final battle with Naraku, but in which Kagome never returned back to the Feudal Era and she meets Sesshoumaru again in the modern-day Tokyo.

Reunion 2: Fics where Sesshoumaru finds Kagome in the 21st century, as requested by a follower .

Courting: Fics in which Sesshoumaru courts Kagome - or vice versa! The courting may follow some sort of a ritual or just be more casual or general attempts to woo the other.

NSFW: Fics that are PWP or otherwise heavily focus on lemons/smut/NSFW scenes and include plenty of them.

Kagome as a Demon: These fics can either be fully AU, so that Kagome has always been a youkai, or they may be canon divergence and follow the canon storyline and setting until Kagome by some manner is turned into a youkai.

Sesshoumaru’s Into Kagome: These are any stories in which it is Sesshoumaru who is interested in or in love with Kagome before she is with him. These stories may also feature Sesshoumaru’s attempts to court Kagome or, if Sesshoumaru is not expressing his interest outright, pining.

Fluff Serial & Fluff One Shots: All those cute, feel-good fics that make you squee, fill you with happiness and/or are sweet enough to rot your teeth.

Hurt/Comfort: Stories in which one of the characters (or both of them) is experiencing either physical or mental pain and receives comfort from the other (or from each other). These stories can be bittersweet. 

Holiday One Shots & Holiday Fics Serial:  These are stories that centre on Christmas and/or the holiday season. They’re typically written for holiday exchanges, as secret santa gift, for holiday events or just to celebrate holidays with fic!

Outsider POV: Fics that give you a glimpse to Sesshoumaru and Kagome’s relationship through the eyes of a third party, whoever they may be.

Family/Pregnancy: A rec list of fics focused on Kagome’s pregnancy or the family Sesshoumaru and Kagome have built together, as requested by a follower.
