Happiness

Imagine life would be a Party and you don't know when you have to leave. What would you do?

Wouldn't you go out there and have the most fun you could ever have. Wouldn't you try to be happy?

But what does Happiness really mean? When am I happy? Who decides if I am a happy person or not? What do I need to do to be happy?

For a long time I actually thought that happiness is the goal I have to reach and that my current life is just the way to this almost unattainable goal. I put my life on hold because I didn't reach that goal - yet.

To me, it feels that you have to fulfill a certain role to be considered happy. As a female you have to be tall, slim and beautiful; as a male you have to be muscular, tall and beautiful. Your social media presence has to show your great, amazing (happy?) life with loads of likes and posed pictures.

If you are nothing like that, you are the odd one out.

For a long time I somehow denied myself to be pronounced happy. It was more like a miserable life.

All around me, my friends get married and start a family. I receive those pitiful questions: "What about you?" and those seemingly encouraging: "You just wait, you will find your significant other one day!" - but after a while this turned into a hesitant "Well, maybe you don't want this life?". It made me feel damaged and useless, I was certain that I'm not supposed to be part of society.

I have all those thoughts in my mind. Sometimes they tear you down. All the time I tried - at least- to pretend I was happy or maybe even contend. These thoughts wanted to be out in the world. I never proclaimed myself eloquent or a virtues writer. Therefore, and because of fear I never wrote them down. I feared that if I cannot describe my feelings perfectly; I shouldn't even try. I shouldn't write, sing, draw or anything, if it is not perfect. Even right now, I have this big buzz in my mind and I'm trying not to miss anything.

I don't remember when this changed. I don't remember why it changed (even though I got a pretty good hunch about the reason). I certainly remember when, though. There was this one moment just a couple of days ago - I was at work. And from one moment to the other I just realised one thing: I AM HAPPY. I was touched, I almost cried.

At that moment I realised that I don't have to be perfect to go out there. It doesn't matter that I'm unlike my friends, that my life is different from theirs. I realised that imperfection is the real perfect.

It's okay that I love to read when everyone else has a night out. It's okay that I enjoy a nice day of doing nothing (or with loads of TV) and the next day I'm hyper-energerised and jump aroung the flat singing loudly (hope no one hears me, though, because I sing highly off-key).

I don't have to go for a run if I don't want to.

I don't have to listen to others to know when I am supposed to be happy.

There is only one person in the world that can control my happiness: Me.

I realised that I am damm proud of what I achieved so far - even with my past. Maybe because of my past. I am damm proud of who I am today and of who I will be tomorrow. It's not wrong to be confident. I am the best version of myself right now.

My life is not on a hold and will only start once I reach a certain point. No, right now, right here this is my life - and I love my life. It makes me happy.

So, if my life was a party and I don't know when I have to leave. I would be right in the middle of the dancefloor singing (off-key) on top of my lungs dancing like there is no tomorrow. Or I would sit in a quite corner reading a book. I would do whatever would make me happy.
