I was excited to find your Sanji fic, but I saw that your blog is not a safe place for Jews. More than 80% of Jews identify as Zionists. That’s 12 million people. i appreciate the tone of your message and it seems like you genuinely meant it with patience and kindness. my response is not meant with either. my blog is a safe space for jewish people. however, as far as zionism is concerned, i unequivocally cannot tolerate this ideology. furthermore, i see your equation of judaism with zionism as one that is dangerous, lazy, and singularizing; you should take great caution in aiding the “devolution of Judaism from a set of religious beliefs into a national political ideology” (from judith butler’s “Is Judaism Zionism?”). i see nothing appealing about a national political ideology of settler colonialism, alt-right nationalism, and apartheid.

let's just establish some terra firma from which to work with here—israel is a state, judaism is a religion, and zionism is an ideology. the ideology of zionism is the ideology of israel as a state (since its inception and certainly now, with the likud at the helm). by conflating zionism with judaism, you're singularizing millions and millions of people into one set of beliefs. you're doing a disservice to your religion, and this homogenizing is dangerous and toxic. there are many jewish people who agree with me and who recognize the Zionist ideology for what it is; for two key examples see the organization jewish voice for peace as well as many hasidic people who have spoken against the netanyahu administration (yes, even in Israel).

also, rhetoric 101 - your statistic, '80% of jews', is an argument from authority, a specific type of logical fallacy. whatever you’re referencing (you haven’t named a source) is, apparently, just out there in the ether. what you mean is that 80% of jews that were surveyed in whatever study you're referencing are zionists. but this statistic is flawed—there is no a way to survey 100% of jews worldwide and such a study has not happened. so no, it is not 12 out of 15 million people who are pro zionism. i have no doubt the poll you’re referencing was conducted on less than one million people based in, gee, probably north america and israel. and that's not to speak on who provided the funding.

again, i assert that any nation that aspires to be an ethno-state, and any nation that instantiates and perpetuates apartheid, is a genocidal state. read the writings of theodor herzl and ben gurion and you will be surprised at how openly and proudly they propound that zionism is a settler colonial project.

This was a fun one to write, and although I'm not completely in love with my prose, I appreciate the chance to explore a character I may not have otherwise chosen to write about! Always happy to exercise a creative muscle! Also note, this is pre-canon, as I did not want to have to fit this in the timeline or with the other characters.

Larson sped down the dirt road with an iron clutch on the steering wheel. He should have known better than to show leniency to a dirty dissenter. Now, he had to take matters into his own hands. He would shoot that bastard before he could spill the secrets of the Order he so ungraciously abandoned to anyone else.

A rumbling could be felt beneath his feet. Larson shifted gears to keep up the pace, but something in the stick shift caught. A loud pop! sounded off in front of him, and the car knocked and rattled.

Larson furrowed his brow and stepped on the gas, brute forcing his way through the issue. A puff of white smoke burst out from beneath and to the side of the hood, then began trickling steadily out. Larson smacked the dashboard and clenched his teeth, muttering, “No, no, no!”

The car lurched and stuttered in its tracks. Larson, determined as he was to finish the hunt, relented to the glaring problem before him, and jerked the wheel to pull off to the side of the road. He threw the shifter into park and swung open the door just to slam it closed.

Larson stepped around the car to before the hood, which was now hissing and steaming white. The shiny forest green and cream vehicle settled with a whine. A 1930 Buick Series 60 coupe soft top convertible, one of the best and latest models, he’d been promised by a car salesman. He went far out of his way from Addison to buy this machine, and paid good money for it, too. What on earth could be wrong with it?

Larson huffed and checked either side of that long dirt road. All there was to see was forest. There likely weren’t people for miles.

No matter. If Larson could run a cult for more than a century to the elder gods, then he could handle a mere mortal automobile.

His soft fingers found purchase under the lip of the hood, hot from the drive, and wrenched it open. Steam billowed into his face, shocking him into a choking cough. He staggered back, waving a hand before himself to clear it. From a short distance, he gripped the front of his own perfect tan blazer and waited for the smoke to clear.

Larson peered into the engine compartment. He found it a confounding tangle of rubber tubes and metal bits. No matter! He was sure something would make itself clear.

There was a component that looked like a box with vent slits, and a cap on top. Larson snapped his fingers absentmindedly, distantly recalling the part. The radiator, which must obviously be trapping the heat! What better solution to get back on the road than to release it now and be done with it?

Larson produced a handkerchief from his pocket, then gingerly reached forth to unscrew the radiator cap. It came off in a couple twists, only to release a woosh! of liquid like a geyser.

The coolant splattered back down on the car in a steaming mess, raining on the pitiful, clueless man as well. The front of his suit was now drenched, perfectly manicured hair ruined, and glasses running with droplets. As undignified and irksome as it was, Larson thanked the elder gods through clenched teeth, not for the first time, for supernaturally durable skin. Any other poor sod without such blessings would have been scalded immediately.

Larson growled and threw the cap to the ground without a second glance. To hell with that, then!

Folding his cloth back into his dampened pocket, he checked the sky. It was still light out, but the sun wouldn’t stay for much longer. Larson worried the inside of his cheek but stayed determined.

He approached the engine bay once again. A man of his caliber simply would not be held down by pithy mechanical problems. Not when his Order depended on him!

He tentatively reached his fingers in, pushing tubes and lifting wires out of his way. He moved to get any angle he could to see inside the tight space. If only he could find something with a hole in it, or that was obviously loose…

Shoulders aching from the awkward position, he stretched his back straight up to full height with a groan. He tapped his fingers against his hips while he thought. Maybe he just needed to get back in the car and start it up again?

He hummed to himself and turned to pick up the radiator cap from the roadside. As he bent down to reach it, he gasped. His hand, now outstretched, was covered in charcoal gray! Checking his hips, he found smudges of the same color on his expensive pants and blazer.

Larson groaned and moved carefully, barely pinching the edge of his jacket to open it and find his handkerchief again. When he pulled away, little gray fingerprints were left behind.

“Gods, why,” Larson hissed to himself as he attempted to wipe the grease away, really only smearing it on his hands more. Heat rose through his neck and face, and his vision blurred as tears pricked at the corners of his eyes. Could he not solve one simple problem for the sake of his followers? And why, pray tell, was fixing a car so frustrating and gross?

He fit the cap back on with more force than strictly necessary, then turned his back to the car and sighed. Here, he could see the shadows of the forest lengthening. It was going to be too difficult and too late for Larson to walk out of this predicament now. The heretic was likely long gone, anyway.

He shut the hood of the car with a satisfying clang!, then leaned against it while glaring at the sky. Larson willed the gods for divine intervention, but no one seemed inclined to answer.

The old fashioned way it was, then. This was a quiet road, but it was between towns. Someone must come around eventually. Out of patience, skills, or godly favor, Larson would simply have to wait.

Time.

Running this blog is time-consuming. When I refer to "the queue," that includes the actual queue, but also a few hundred topics sitting in the inbox that I haven't formatted yet. Due to the way the poll block works, I essentially have to retype everything every time. (Even when someone submits a formatted poll instead of an ask, I have to remake it anyway for the sake of anonymity– submissions retain the submitter's url when posted.)

Keeping the queue long allows me to only put time in when I have the energy for it.

Dashboard saturation.

In order to get the most responses to each poll, polls go up only during the highest-traffic part of the day. At some point, packing more and more polls into a short amount of time will just clog up everyone's dashboards and get annoying.

Sustainability.

Since this blog relies on submissions, there's no guarantee that questions will keep coming in. Rationing them ensures that there are enough to keep going for a while even if, you know, the ablogcalypse hits and nobody can send asks anymore.

tl;dr this is a hobby, not a job. It's actually worse if the queue is short.

That said, I do try to move any seasonally-relevant questions so they get posted at appropriate times. Don't let the long queue discourage you from sending seasonal or holiday-related questions.

I absolutely hate the new layout. How am I supposed to see a preview of my blog from the dashboard if there's no search bar to type in my username and no icon to quickly click on. Also I think I figured out WHY but I still think it's dumb that half the time when someone I follow reblogs from someone it doesn't show who it is. I'm assuming it's meant to be OP or the person most recent in the reblog chain but it looks like they reblogged the post from no one. Also the layout of the reblog symbol coming first then the url then "reblogged" and then the other URL (if it's even there) looks dumb and confusing. Additionally I think the DM box popup is boring and generic and way too big. I view tumblr at 110% and before the message box update it wouldn't overlap onto anything on my dashboard but now it does (even at the normal size it does). I liked it when the background was the color of the blog I was talking to. I know it's not hard for you to do it that way. The only way I'm able to figure out which of the people I'm following that I'm even interacting with is the tumblr Lab that colors posts for the blog that reblogged/posted it. I would have to scroll all the way to the top of a post not to know which of the people I follow reblogged something now. I liked the icon on the side that would move as I scrolled because it made it easy to remember who I was interacting with, and it also made it easy for one of those big "ask me these questions" posts for me to scroll through the list, pick something, and then quickly access their blog through the icon. Time is of the essence because I have memory issues because of my ADHD and I could quickly forget what I'm intending to say/send to someone. WAIT THE SEARCH BAR IS ON THE OTHER SIDE??? Man this is a horrible design update, it's almost as bad as when deviantart updated everything and I couldn't find my watch notifications for three months and couldn't find my gallery folders from the submit page for two years. There was literally nothing wrong with how it looked before, unlike DA which did look outdated. Your website was fine, and making it look more like twitter will NOT attract the twitter people like you think it will. I've seen polls with tens of thousands of responses asking people where they came from to join tumblr and less than 5% of people responding came from twitter AND reddit. If you really want to welcome them, make a (DISMISS-ABLE) tutorial for people whose accounts are less than a year old and anyone new who signs up. You don't have to destroy everything that made this website unique. Because once you lose your userbase you aren't getting them back, because 2018 should have taught you one thing and it's that your website isn't addictive like twitter or tiktok. People WILL leave.

I do (ironically) love it when people make posts about how little fucks they give about tumblr changes, and making a point to ridicule the people who were, in fact, upset by those changes. Very cool. :)

And now seriously?

UI change is not the worst thing on earth, and often can actually improve the quality of life and make the place better.

While yes, the tumblr user base does not typically receives change happily (unless it's good, polls, am i right?) to say that this is all about the users being 'bitchy' or 'silly' is a gross understatement of what upsets people in reality and is pretty damn rude.

I will not go down to every single point of why it's bad, but I'll bring forth a few points nevertheless.

Releasing a massive UI change while there's still active and major bugs and issues in the main functionality of your platform is not only bad towards a loyal user base that is used to a certain way of things, it's also unprofessional, incompetent, and quote frankly—stupid.

Here is an example of main tumblr functionality, the post editor on web. As a website that is heavily reliant on text posts, and the ability of users to be able to write quality posts, the fact that as of today, the text editor is heavily bugged, is truly a thing to be astonished by.

Especially considering the fact that some users (namely me) made a point of sending them a proper documentation of the bug, along with full descriptions and even a screen recording for an easy recreation of the issue on their side.

In case you were wondering what response did I get—well— TL:TR they say that there's an issue, and IF they find the issue, they will fix it :)

So now with this in mind, and many other bugs like this still present, since April they could not have fixed the post editor— but they could add numerous and absolutely pointless UI changes, right?

Now taking it a step further, let's address the UI changes, why not?

The changes they're rolling out are clearly unpolished, unfinished and untested. The audacity to force hardly-working versions onto people without any sort of consent as is customary in such an unpolished version of a product is something that I have no other words for other than absolutely shameless.

Even look at the Chat UI change, the text is smaller, the windows cover other parts of the dashboard, the Chat visually changes from section to section of the website (for instance it's new on main, it's old on support page) and again, endless amount of other bugs.

What's worse? And I will not go into depth about this particular topic as not so many people are from 10+ years ago still here, but just in short: The loss of identity that tumblr had prided itself for so long with. We are not like other social media, right? Or well, so we thought. As it seems like tumblr is adamant to change and curate for new users that will, frankly, leave the moment their social media gets fixed. Some will stay, and they are warmly welcome to, however most will leave just as they did last time twitter had a crisis.

P.S You have to appreciate the irony of tumblr making money out of making fun of twitter, and the user base supporting it because that's the sort of UI changes we do enjoy— only for tumblr to copy paste twitter some months after :)

But yes, why not, call everyone a crybaby, since siding with a staff that simply does not listen to its user base or cares about fixing current and relevant bugs—is the way to go!

P.S2 it's absolutely fine if you're unbothered by the change or simply don't care. Ain't nothing wrong with having some good proportion on things. However please don't embarrass yourself by making fun of the people who actively care and worry about how this place operates and what sort of platform we'll be engaging in the future.
